EDITOR’S NOTE
BACK TO THE BEGINNING
Sometimes I reflect on the rapid passage of time and on the many ups and downs experienced over the years. Inevitably, thoughts turn to the happiest times, the period of life one would want to recreate if the years could by magic be rolled back. What would you choose? I think many people would elect that time of life when they were studying, when they had freedom and the possibility still to be themselves and yet to dream. A time for forging lasting friendships.
Fine Dae editor.finedae@gmail.com
We all have our dreams. Some become reality, some not. One dream that remains throughout life is the imagined recreation of those times when one was happiest.

EUROPE Bulgaria (Varna, Sofia) – This Balkan country is reputed to offer the best value for money in Europe, offering a choice between the Black Sea resort and seaport Varna and the sophisticated inland capital, Sofia.
ASIA
A typical startup business these days requires just a computer and easy, fast access to the Internet. The capital-intensive office and advertising can now be replaced by an effective website, the creation of mobile device applications and online-marketing. Such digital businesses can be operated virtually anywhere— Chiang Mai, for instance, is a popular choice for startup entrepreneurs. But there are other favoured locations scattered throughout the world..
Portugal (especially Porto) – Portugal, at the other end of Europe, is still recovering from the economic shocks of 2008 and the current Euro crisis, but it still offers reasonably priced accommodation and services. Poland (Lublin) – Poland’s economy is strengthening and the country offers good opportunities for startup businesses. Macedonia (Skopje, Ohrid) – This Balkan country and former member of the now defunct Republic of Yugoslavia shouldn’t be overlooked as a sound location for startups. Standards compare with any elsewhere in Europe. Egypt (outside Cairo) – The political situation is perhaps worrying but the uncertainty keeps living costs low, and life outside Cairo can be very pleasant and rewarding.
India (Bangalore) – Startup Genome ranks India as the cheapest country in the world for digital entrepreneurs, who can obtain six-month visas and live very comfortably on US $1,000 a month. Malaysia – visa-free for 3 months for most countries. Advanced infrastructure and the proximity of Singapore are great draws for startup businesses.
16 Fundersandfounders.com
Thailand (Chiang Mai) –no need to list the attractions of this famous haven for imaginative entrepreneurs, who value the city’s affordability, lifestyle and culture.
Jordan (Amman) – modern, hassle-free, and quite Westernized, with modern housing and a vibrant café scene.
AFRICA Nicaragua (outside the capital) has become a trendy destination recently, but costs have been kept low in areas outside the capital city, Managua. Ecuador (Cuenca) – Ecuador and its charming old city of Cuenca are now not only a favored retirement destination for Americans but also for startup entrepreneurs. Money goes a long way here, so living costs are low while lifestyle is high. Mexico (interior) – Another favoured American destination, and while its coastal resorts are no longer cheap there are several old colonial cities in the interior where US $1,000 a month goes a long way.
Morocco (Casablanca) – A popularity poll this year rated Morocco the world’s third most welcoming country for foreigners. The country on the northwest coast of Africa combines a richwww.finedaemag.com cultural heritage with modernity.

Mai’s Wararot A SMART START Chiang Market was the place to buy back-to-school TO A NEW supplies, such as uniforms an d stat ionin bygone years, SCHOOL TERM ery, but nowadays parents can find special ist shops sell ing brand goods. At Paiboon and Sutthiporn shops, for instance, parents can find the uniforms of every school in town, and they still maintain retail shops at Wararot Market. Mai Tham Muak, which was among the first to install air-conditioning, also sells uniforms and other backto-school supplies, while Likitsilp, Samut Lanna, Udompon and Rattanapon specialize in stationery and gifts. Rattanapon on Thapae Road, has closed, however. Many discount stores and “one-stop” businesses can be found where quality items can still be bought inexpensively, although children are increasingly demanding imported brand goods from franchised shops, like B2S and Daiso stores. Whatever their budget, Chiang Mai families take special care to send their children back to school well-prepared and to a scholastic world where the word “smart” doesn’t only mean well-attired.

“Be Casual Jeans on“
A GOOD START IS HALF WAY TO
Success
Anan Tarunrat, the owner of V-Twin Condominium Donjan, resisted advice to save the cost of using expensive construction materials like high-grade steel on this top-quality project on Chiang Mai’s upper Highway. He paid attention to every detail from the very start. “I selected only good materials for the construction,” says Khun Anan.
”Sometimes people told me that I don’t need this high-quality steel in order to reduce size and volume, and that I would save money. But, for me, a strong structure requires high-quality steel. “The project was started by my wife whose twin brother owned and managed Nakaburi Hotel in Udon Thani. “I think Chiang Mai and Udon Thani are like twin cities in terms of their development.
Chiang Mai is a large city, though, with a crowded community where more people live in high-rise buildings. “I created the residential and leisure accommodation of a new era, which became V- Twin Towers, in the best location on Super Highway before the Don Jan Intersection.” Each building in the development has 53 units and Khun Anan plans to add a “boutique” shopping mall
Khun Anan not only keeps a close watch on the construction of the development but is personally accessible if clients need to contact him, for whatever reason. “During the first few years if the buyer has a problem, they can consult me. I was born here. I will not run away. “If we refrain from exploiting our clients and maintain a sincere devotion to our own profession, we will receive a good feedback and success.”

HOW TO Rubber Stamp
Text /
nyantatokeichan
CARVING OUT A NEW HOBBY Rubber stamp carving is a craft that began in the West but is now winning popularity throughout the world, including Thailand. It’s an art form that particularly appeals to young women, although the skill can be acquired by anyone with a bit of patience and application. If you’d like to try your hand at it then join a workshop in Chiang Mai. Details can be found on the website www.facebook. com/feltyfarm

The Xym Boutique
The Xym Boutique is a top-class residential development of 52 apartments, in a prime location opposite the Chiang Mai Cultural Center and near the city’s “silver street,” Wualai Road, scene of the Saturday “walking street” market, and the Central Airport Plaza shopping mall and cinema complex. The building is fully secure and equipped with the l atest technology. Apartments are decorated in modern Lanna style, with modern furniture, antiques, art works and folk fabrics combining to create a relaxing, aesthetic ambiance.

The “green” setting of the development gives residents the feeling of living in a small oasis in the heart of a busy city. A rooftop swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi provide an attractive opportunity for relaxation or a quiet place to log into the free Wi-Fi Internet service.

SECURITY ARE KEY FACTORS FOR THIS HOME BUYER
When it came to the big decision of whether to buy a condominium or a house, Suthat Prasatsuwan, the deputy director of Chiang Mai Primary Educational Service Area 4, plumped for the former, preferring it as an investment and for the security it offers him and his family. In fact, he bought three apartmemts, in the Himma development. “We surveyed many projects and found
that Himma is an impressive one,” he says.” We didn’t want a house-in-land management project because would be too big. We live in Sanpatong but our daughter works in Chiang Mai. A condominium is the answer for us because we have better security for our daughter with 24 hours security guard service. We chose a lower level unit because the development has a
beautiful garden that make us feel we’re in a house rather than a condominium. The decor is also very nice.”“I think this is a good investment for our children because the properties cost in this area will be higher and higher. The management company also takes care of us very well. These are the true reasons why we selected this project because it’s good for both quality of life and investment.”

Food Stalls for
Children
The end of the school day was a great time for us kids—and not just because lessons were over. There were food stalls outside the school, where we could buy delicious snacks as we waited for the school bus to arrive and ferry us home. Not much has changed since then. I used to love Chinese steamed vegetable cake, sold by a woman on a motorbike. We called her auntie, and she still plies her trade in front of Sacred Heart College, my old school. I called by in search of my favourite snack and she told
me her young customers today preferred Western-style food, such as fried chicken and baked desserts. Thai-style fried meat balls can be found, however—try the ones served up with tasty dipping sauce in front of Yupparaj Wittalai School, near the Three Kings Monument or in front of Prince Royal College School Other tasty snacks served up in the evening outside school gates in Chiang Mai include. grilled pork and sticky rice, fried noodles and Japanese-style soft crepe or Khanom Tokyo, At Aunty Pan’s stall in front of Anubarn Chiang Mai School you can find a wide range of “themed” food, like Angry Bird, Ultra Man and Hello Kitty.. French-style crepes are served up Thai-style with various toppings, in front of Montfort School from a menu that includes “Cowboy” egg sandwiches. Prices are low and the service is good-humoured and friendly—these stallholders truly love their young customers and do their best to keep them happy.

The Authentic Japanese Flavours of
Shirayuri The chef at the new ramen corner of Shirayuri Japanese restaurant is from Hokkaido, so authenticity is guaranteed. Recommended dishes include Tepan Yaki, grilled meat or fish on a hot pan with fried vegetable, while a Shirayuri set menu combines high grade beef with fresh fish, kimchi, fried vegetable and fruit. Seafood Ramen is a lunchtime recommendation.

Sip a New Idea at the Good View
Sip Bar
Wine bars often have a limited menu, designed for customers who just want to sip a glass or two. Guests at the newly-opened Sip Bar at Chiang Mai’s Good View, however, can order from the restaurant’s extensive menu, selecting the dish most suitable for the wine they are drinking. The bar also serves a variety of cocktails. Wine bars also seem to favour a particular style of music, such as lounge or bossa nova. At the Good View, the well-known percussionist Khun Pam and a team of professional DJs keep the music eclectic.
