AWAT DII

With the recent trouble at the Thailand-Cambodian border, I started wondering how we (Thais) can ever be sure that we are ever completely at peace with any of our neighboring countries. Though we can smile with the Burmese and call Laotians our brothers, how do we know what really lies behind their friendly faces. That’s not to say the neighbors are in any way insincere but because we, Thai people, have a terrible attitude in regards to how we view them. I remember growing up at school where anyone who was weird, old fashioned or poor would be labeled as‘Lao’. Shamefully, until today Thais look down upon Laos; though truly we are more backwards than they are, especially in regards to our stupid and divisive attitudes.

Throughout history, Thailand has invaded Laos, taken advantage of its people and never given anything in return. It’s unbelievable that Laos are willing to call us ‘brothers’ or ‘sisters’; Myanmar people too. Especially in Chiang Mai, we see Myanmar workers as lower than us when, as humans, they are our equal. There are many shameful negative views that Thai people have of other countries that we think are undeveloped, yet we benefit from them in many ways. Look at the borders, especially in the border markets of Myanmar’s Tachilek or Lao’s Huay Xai from where the Thai government buys electricity. If we would like to call our neighbors ‘friends’, I think firstly we should be sincere in regards to our friendship with them. Jirat Prasertsup

THE KING’S FEATURE . Text: Passport to Suvannaphoum Photo: www.worldcyclingrecord.com

HE BRITISH CYCLIST WHO LOVES OUR KING Our staff recently visited Chiang Khong district in Chiang Rai and apart from being a tranquil and relaxing city for backpackers, Alan Bate, the British cyclist who rode his bike around the world and attributed his success to His Majesty the King, is settled here. Last year, Alan Bate broke the world record for cycling around the world, by taking 165 days to travel 29,500 kilometers through 20 countries. Starting on 31st March 2010, he finished his adventure on 4th August at King Chulalongkorn Monument, Bangkok. During the trip, he also visited Mt. Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, - the birthplace of the king. Without any president, Alan Bate confirmed this world trip was made for his deep passion to the King. Bate grew up in England, and had no idea about the Thai Royal Family until he arrived in the region in 2004 on a cycling trip through South East Asia. He got no further than Chiang Khong in Chiang Rai and fell in love with Thailand and decided to settle in the small town by the Khong River. He’s now sold his

house in England, and shipped his 60 collectible bikes for display in the Hub – the bike museum in Chiang Khong. He told the Nation Newspaper that since arriving, he’s heard a great deal about Thailand’s King. “His Majesty is one of the world’s last real role models,” said Bate. Bate also learned about the different projects initiated by the King, including the simple but clever idea of using soil-stabilizing vetiver grass to help nature take care of itself. A keen awareness of environmental problems has been a feature of His Majesty’s ideas since 1965, long before other leaders paid attention to climate change and the potential for eco-disasters. But what impresses Bate the most is the King’s sufficiency economy philosophy and his ideas for this lifestyle to be adopted by Thais nationwide. “He lives a very humble life,” said the cyclist. After paying tribute to the King with his human capability, Bate is determined to use his skills to help develop young Thai cyclists into international-level competitors; recently, he opened the Hub Bicycle Museum and Cafe in Chiang Khong district, Chiang Rai.

O U S E T H AT SPEAK TO US

Community-Based Architectural Heritage Preservation in Phrae U.S. Consul General in Chiang Mai Susan Stevenson presided over the book launch ‘Houses that Speak to Us: Community-Based Architectural Heritage Preservation in Phrae, Thailand’ at the Vongburi House in Phrae. The book was funded by the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation. The book is the first historical documentation of Phrae traditional houses and portrays the social and economic history of the province. The study was a compilation of architectural drawings of eleven old houses, as well as research and interviews with homeowners and craftsmen about over 100 houses built 50 to 100 years ago in Phrae. The book originated from local community groups’ desire to preserve traditional houses in Phrae, which were threatened with demolition as homeowners preferred modern architecture and sold older houses for wood. The Phrae Architectural Heritage Preservation Club and Luk Lan Muang Phrae Network, as well as members of local community and students all participated in interviews and data collection. This project is a preservation model for other communities. Susan Stevenson noted that the Thai and English versions of the book will communicate local tradition to Phrae’s next generation, as well as the importance of historical preservation to Thailand as a whole and to the world.

Fund Fact Established in 2001 by the U.S. Congress, the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation has provided financial support to more than 640 cultural preservation projects in over 100 countries, with grants totaling nearly $US 26 million. The Fund supports a wide range of projects to preserve cultural heritage, such as the restoration of historic buildings, assessment and conservation of museum collections, archaeological site preservation and more.

Whether paper, plastic, or the more recent popular cloth bags, when you go shopping, a bag is essential. Over the years, shopping bags have had many different designs and have been made from a variety of materials; and their history is one you may find interesting. In 1912, shop owner Walter Deubne noticed that his customers only bought products they could hold in their hands, so he designed a bag called the ‘Deubner Shopping Bag’. Aimed to increase turnover, the paper bag with a cord running through it for added strength could hold about 34 kg of produce. Deubner patented his product and within three years, by 1915, was selling over a million shopping bags a year. With technology helping to mass produce shopping bags, they soon became complimentary for customers in department stores at the starts of the 1930’s. Several department stores began using shopping bags to create customer loyalty by placing their logos on the bags and they quickly became more than just packaging and an integral part of a company’s branding. Up until the present day, there have been many designs attracting customers, used as a symbol of taste and social and economy status. During 1980’s, Bloomingdale Department Store in U.S. employed many painters and designers to create shopping bags to complement the seasons. In 1965, the plastic bag was invented by Swedish Engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin, giving customers more choice; and it wasn’t long before people preferred plastic shopping bags over their paper made counterparts. Department stores, supermarkets, mega stores and retail stores satiated this demand and by 1996, 80% of shopping bags in the U.S. were made of plastic.

The modern revolution of shopping bags has come about as governments across the world have concerned about plastic bags’ environmental impact. Many countries have introduced legislation to limit the use of plastic bags; for example in 2002 Ireland set an expensive tax on plastic shopping bags. Cloth bags seem to be a good alternative and people around the world are campaigning for their use. In 2007, British Designer Anya Hindmarch created the cloth bag with the inscription ‘I’m Not A Plastic Bag’ for 5 dollars, and was shortly sold out. Apart from being environmentally friendly, cloth bags are now a must-have fashion accessory for shopaholics. References : Wikipedia.com Designboom.com Smithsonianmag.com Plasticbageconomics.com

I m Not A Plastic Bag

KASHMIR IN BRIEF Passion of the Forbidden City

s the breathtaking view of the snowy great Himalayas mountain, various kinds of vivid flowering gardens, the vast peaceful lake, the friendly lives of locals and very nice weather, some people call it as the Indian Switzerland or the Venice of East.

TRAVEL FEATURE Situated in a politically volatile area between India and Pakistan, Kashmir is a continual source of tension and thus unable to attract the mainstream tourist market. However, as it borders Tibet’s Himalayas in the north east, its location is very elegant and worth well worth visiting. The northern most state in India, the term Kashmir geographically denotes the valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. With breathtaking views of the snowy great Himalaya Mountains, various kinds of vivid flowering gardens, a vast peaceful lake, the friendly lives of locals and very nice weather, some people call it the Indian Switzerland or the Venice of East. Though this city remains in political dispute, the security system for tourists can be trusted. Tourists can leave their worries behind and delight in this charming city. To get into the heart of Kashmir, start at its capital ‘Srinagar’. It is situated in the Kashmir Valley and lies on the banks of the Jhelum River. While not the largest, it is one of the biggest cities in India without a Hindu majority. Srinagar is famous for its lakes and houseboats. It is also known for traditional handicrafts and dried fruits, whilst the areas on the outskirts of Srinagar are also famous for their natural beauty. The urban Dal Lake is integral to tourism and recreation in Kashmir and is nicknamed the ‘Jewel in the crown of Kashmir’. Staying a night at the Dal Lake’s fancy decorated houseboat is a must

as is cruising by Shikara (the local boat) to admire the lake and traditional lifestyle of local people. Local products such as Kashmir scarves, serapes, silver & wooden crafts, paper Mache and carpets are recommended for those who are looking for some fine souvenirs to take home. Srinagar has several gardens laid by the Mughal emperors across the Indian subcontinent, known as Mughal gardens. Shalimar Bagh (the garden of love) and the city’s largest Nishat Bahh (the garden of spring) are highly recommended. The gardens have rows of tulips and other flowers of different colors and shades. If you have more time, we recommend visiting Gulmarg town (112 kilometers southern west of Srinagar) which is the one of the most beautiful hills in Kashmir. In the winter, it is great for skiing, and fresh vivid flowers will blossom every summer. The mountain also hosts the highest golf course in the world. It’s not an exaggeration to call Kashmir a paradise land.

ELIGHT IN THE FAKE

@Tachileik Border Market

They look Burmese, but could well be Indian boys, as they follow me begging for money in poorly spoken Thai. A young boy once asked me for a bottle of drinking water which I gave him gladly. However, after I had walked for a while, the boy came back with a few of his friends pestering me for money. I tried to talk with them about their families, but they wouldn’t even tell me where they were from. It took about five minutes for them to realize that I wasn’t parting with my cash and they left me alone; a few minutes later however, a new Burmese man tried to sell me Viagra. This is a personal, yet common story, when visiting Tachileik Border Market, the most popular border market in the north of Thailand (and the east of Myanmar).

FEATURE

rossing the border Only a few lines about Tachileik Market can be found in most guidebooks, made up of a description of its location: south east of Myanmar – Shan State, connected with Thailand at Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai. Though the market is located in Myanmar, the majority of customers are Thai citizens who come from all over the country to buy goods in this market. About 3,000 to 4,000 people cross the bridge to the Myanmar district daily, shopping for herbal medicines, dried mushrooms and prominently cheap import products from Shenzhen, China, such as brand name clothes, handbags, technology products, DVDs, and cigarettes. However, all brand name products distributed at the market are fakes! (This sentence is not one found in guidebooks, but all Thai people know it). Note: Thai citizens can make the temporary visa at Mae Sai District Office (tel. 0 5373 3233) for 30 Baht. The visa covers 6.30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Foreigners can show passports at the immigration office. T

hey’re here to find a new Coach,” said my friend ridiculously. The photographer disagreed; he thought they’d be on the hunt for Louis Vuitton...We were talking about the women who dressed in luxury outfits in a new yellow Beetle. It seemed unbelievable they were here to shop in a place like this. As Shenzhen imported fake brand name handbags look very authentic, this is a market for those who are trendy but unable to afford brand name prices and also for rich individuals not so keen to overspend on bags; not so surprising given they cost up to 20 times more for the real deal. All products here are counterfeit,” confirmed a Thai merchant in Tachileik. He said all of them come from Shenzhen, the major manufacturing center of China. Shenzhen is also well-known in producing goods to South East Asia, especially electrical appliances, mobile phones and some IT products; Thai people are their main customers. According to the information from the Mae Sai Chamber of Commerce, about 10 million Baht circulates in the border daily during weekdays and at least 30 million Baht at weekends. So, when the Thai government has a conflict with Myanmar, the merchants in Mae Sai and Tachileik tend to worry. In 2001, the border was closed for a week, and when it reopened almost 100 million Baht was in circulation on that first day! I expect that is why those fake products are distributed without any copyright law concerns. The legal issue is one that seems to get overlooked with retailers at the border enjoying a thriving business for almost 20 years. Though brand name clothes and bags are fine, cigarettes here should be avoided. There are many walking sale agents who hassle people to buy cigarettes, designer lighters, sun glasses, cards, Viagra and porno movies. A carton of Marlboro cigarettes can be bought here for 100 Baht, and in some cases discounted to only 30 Baht; the cheap price reflected in the cheap quality.

“Though this market is famous for its ridiculous reputation of fake products, it is an improvement on the past when it was used as a drug route,”said Somsak Jiansakul, an immigration police officer at Mae Sai border. It’s a fact that this land was a famous opium stage and part of the Golden Triangle. Also, yaba or methamphetamine drugs were also wide spread here in the past, as this city was the home of Burmese drug lord Khun Sa. Anyway, with the establishment of official markets by Thai and Myanmar governments, there is now a strong immigration system and drug dealings have decreased. “Poor Burmese people selling fake cigarettes is better than them selling drugs, isn’t it?,” said the cop. Though this market thrives on the sale of counterfeit products, real money has improved the lives of both Thai and Burmese people. While I was walking back to the Mae Sai border, a Burmese guy asked me if I wanted to see the Shwedagon Pagoda, whilst showing me pictures of his tricycle and the small golden pagoda. He quoted 100 Baht for the trip to Shwedagon Pagoda in Tachileik. My friend thought it’d be interesting, so after we finished shopping for some fake brand names, we visited the intimate pagoda.

CHIANG SAEN DAY Market, Lives and the River

t

takes about 45 minutes to drive along Highway 1290 from Mae Sai to Chiang Saen, well-known for being part of the Golden Triangle, a term that defines the confluence of the Ruak River and the Mekong River, appropriated by the Thai tourist industry to describe the nearby junction of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. Playing host to casinos, which visitors can reach easily by boat, as there are many tourist attractions in the Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen remains under the radar even though this famous small old city has its own unique character. 14th century ruins lie adjacent to the market where Thai and Lao people shop together on the street and the pier is just a few steps away, home to barges and house boats. Chiang Saen is a sleepy, tranquil town that has remained unchanged over the last decade in spite of the Golden Triangle’s commercialization, which for example, has been concentrated on nearby Sob Ruak. As the district is located beside the Mekong River, opposite Ton Pheung district of Lao’s Bokeo province, we can see the trading atmosphere of Indo-Chinese and Lao on the land and above the river.

very weekend morning until late afternoon, there is a walking street shopping arena on the main street near the pier. Many Lao people who live in Ton Pheung cross the border to the district to buy utilities, electricity appliances, and dried food. A lovely scene unfolds when the market closes at night when Lao people take their purchases onto the small boats and return to their hometown. A short man with four big bicycles on a tiny longboat or an old woman carrying irons and fans onto a ship are examples of general scenes uniquely characteristic to this town. The small ships are used for crossing Mekong while the big barges are for traversing the river. Chiang Saen is the prominent pier of the Indo China trade route, and today huge river barges from China moor at Chiang Saen, carrying fruit, engine parts and all manner of other imports, keeping the old China-Siam trade route alive.

“I’ve been here for almost two weeks; maybe tomorrow it will be my turn,” said Som, a 49 year old Lao naval captain, on his ship on Chiang Saen Pier. The blue narrow boat, approximately 20 meters long, is the main vehicle that he and his 4 crew & family members work and lives on together. Som is one of a hundred Mekong gypsies that run cargo boats between Chiang Saen Pier to Jinhong, Xishuangbanna (Sibsong Panna – southern China). This is his life. Som lives in Ton Phueng district in Bokeo, neighboring Myanmar and Thailand. Som’s family has operated the trip for many years, from the time his father sailed from Chiang Saen to Jinhong and back again. A trip takes about two days but due to the number of cargo boats, he and his crew must patiently wait their turn, often for two weeks. “Sometime we have to wait for a month or more,” said the captain. His customers are Lao or Chinese merchants who employ the cargo ships to transfer fruits, vegetables, and utilities from Thailand for distribution in Jinhong. Though his ship cannot compete with the large vessels that also run the same route (most of which are government owned), Som’s old style boat serves the needs of the Mekong communities. The boat is simple but complete for living; there is a restroom and toilet at the rear of the boat, a water container for drinking and bathing, and a small kitchen and space for sleeping with mosquito nets. Apart from these small areas, 80% of the ship is used for containing products. As the crew must often live in the boat for extended periods, it has been decorated like a home – a home that can run above the river.

the huge ships containing petrol trucks crossing the Mekong River to Laos, there are also many trucks waiting to cross the river. The scene looks busy, but the atmosphere is relaxed. Although many trucks run around the suburbs of the city every day, the downtown atmosphere is calm, relaxed and worthy of staying long term.

he road from Chiang Saen to Chiang Khong is narrow, but the surrounding views are perfect. We drove along the highway 1129 which is parallel to the Mekong River and on the left lay the beautiful river whilst on the right, a breathtaking view of mountains. Chiang Khong is widely known as the small city beside the Mekong River that acts as the gateway cruising to Luang Prabang. The 3-kilometer stretch from the Buk Pier to the Chiang Khong District Office represents the city’s downtown area. The main road of this city is paral with the Mekong River and opposite Huay Xai district of Lao’s Bokeo. There are no stylish coffee shops and attractive sites visitors must see. There are only temples as tourist attractions which are not different from other temples in Chiang Rai. However, the city has a lot of guesthouses and hotels catering to tourists and backpackers, which got me wondering what travelers find so attractive about the place. I asked Mike, a foreign retired tourist. He answered that he loves this city because there is nothing here. Mike moved from Pai for due to the number of Pai tourists are heavily increased. “ the weather is good, people are friendly and there aren’t any irresponsible tourists,” said him. “Here, almost all long stay tourists are humble, and know how to blend well with the city and its residents,” smiled Mike. Four years ago, Alan Bate, the world record-holding cyclist who cycled around the world in 2010, visited South East Asia on a cycling trip. After he passed Chiang Khong on route to Laos and Vietnam he later returned to the city, and has been here ever since. He opened the Hub – the bicycle gallery and cafe in Chiang Khong district.

Huay Xai Journey The Charm Western Laos

of

“Yes, it is Iphone 5,” confirmed a Lao merchant at IndoChina Market in Huay Xai district. The merchant believed it to be a genuine import from China even though the price is only 1,800 Baht and is widely used by Lao teenagers. While many Thais use the U.S. imported I-phone 4 without 3G technology, Lao middle-class people have 3G system technology through their counterfeit mobile phones! This is the bittersweet story I got from the Huay Xai trip. 10,000 kib is the ferry transfer fee from Chiang Khong Buk Pier to Immigration Pier of Huay Xai, equivalent 30 Baht. Crossing the border is very convenient: if you have a passport, bring it to the pier and pay the boarding fee. Huay Xai is the capital of Bokeo province of Laos PDR. Everyday before 11 a.m., many backpackers cross the border from Chiang Khong to the city to catch the cruise to Luang Prabang. Every weekend, Thai tourists visit here to observe this small town, which is best done by shuttle tricycle or tuk tuk. 300 Baht is the price of a tuk-tuk guided tour which starts with a 15 minutes drive from the pier to suburbs visiting the dusty Indo-China Market. Compared with Tachileik Market, it is poor; all goods are also from Shenzhen, especially electricity appliances and mobile phones. The driver confirms that this is the popular spot of Lao teenagers to buy products or their new mobile phones. As almost all shops distribute the same things, we don’t buy anything back.

Below: From the top; the dusty road behind Huay Xai Morning Market. Being the capital of Bokeo province, this market is one of the largest shopping areana of this region. Wat Chom Khao Maneerat (middle picture) is located on the hill next to Immigration Port.

The next visit was to the local market, similar to those found in Thailand, except with many wild products and small gold shops (with goldsmiths inspecting gold ornaments inside) in the same area of fresh market. Wat Chom Khao Maneerat was the last visit of this trip. As the temple is situated on the hill, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of Mekong and Chiang Khong from a bird’s eye view. It is hard to describe Huay Xai as a traveling hotspot as essentially it’s just a small town in Laos. Yet, amongst the unattractive sites of the city, the local charm of the people that live without pretence can be experienced everywhere, so for those who like honest folks, we recommend a visit here.

Mix Noodle is a local noodle shop that we would like to recommend; located on the main road of the city opposite Pongsavanh Bank. This is a popular noodle shop with local residents, and is somewhere visitors are recommended to try out. The Lao Khao Soy, the famous northern style noodles, goes well with shrimp paste. Pho, the Vietnamese noodle, is also ser ved in Lao style with shrimp paste and plentiful fresh vegetables, whilst the traditional Lao noodles with pork soup or Khao Peak Sen is a must. The gimmick of this noodle shop is the spicy bean dip that comes with fresh cow-peas as a side dish of the noodles. CHIQ Bar & Restaurant is located beside the Mae Ping River at the foot of the Super Highway Bridge. Its riverside location coupled with the sweet acoustic music played in the early evening makes for a welcoming and chilled atmosphere, whilst the spicy pop-rock live bands will entertain you well into the night. The decorations are also attractive and the menu is very interesting. Chicken leg sour soup is a nice starter; as the spicy and sour Thai style soup or tom yam that complement the well boiled chicken legs and is ideal with a cold beer or a soft whiskey. Crispy fried noodles with chicken and hot basil is another recommended a la carte menu; in fact this unique signature recipe dish is the restaurant’s most popular recipe. For rice lovers, try the deep fried chicken and lemon cream, or the namprik goong sieab (chili fried shrimp paste), which is near perfect with rice and fresh vegetables. Selective cocktails are in abundance and other alcohol and soft drinks are sold at reasonable prices. This new stylish hangout with excellent atmosphere comes highly recommend, so make sure to check it out when you’re next downtown.

ED MOUNTAIN GOLF COURSE 3KXNHW¶V *RO¿QJ *HP

A holiday paradise for tourists, Phuket boasts many beautiful beaches, charming islands and an exotic underwater world. It is also word renowned for being one of Thailand’s forefront golfing destinations, and the Red Mountain is one of the best golf courses on the island. Part of the mega project ‘The Tin Mine Golf & Country Club’, made up of the Loch Palm Golf Club, Red Mountain Golf Club and 5-star modern hotels and accommodations, surrounded by nature, and covering an over 2,000 rai area of land, it is currently at the development stage and open for people to invest in. Teera Wongsawanon, Deputy Assistant General Manager of MBK Resort Co. Ltd., said that the Red Mountain Golf Club is a unique luxury golf destination, developed in the previous tin mining area of Phuket. “Golfers are sure to be impressed by the unique layout of the mining hills, with the surrounds made up of an abundance of tropical forests,” said Teera. The challenging scene of the Red Mountain is its mountainous lay out. The signature hole is the 150 yards par-3 17th, on which golfers have to putt down the mountain, which is surrounded by a tranquil wood. The challenge is that if they take the wrong line, the ball could end up in the wood. The golf course has a unique character and preserves the site’s nature very well. The fairways and greens are neatly maintained and the services offered are top class. It’s no exaggeration to say that the Red Mountain is one of the best golf courses in Phuket and Thailand, and was awarded the Best New Golf Course in Asia (2nd Runner Up) in 2007.
