n the past, umbrellas were only used by royalty as it was considered a high class object. It was never carried by any other person, except the head abbots of some religions. In Persia the umbrella is found in the carved work of Persepolis. In some sculptures, WKH ÀJXUH RI D NLQJ DSSHDUV DWWHQGHG E\ D VHUYDQW ZKR FDUULHV DQ XPEUHOOD RYHU KLV KHDG In other sculptures on the rock at Taghe-Bostan, supposed to be not less than 20 centuries old, a deer-hunt is represented, at which a king looks on, seated on a horse with an umbrella borne over his head. ,Q (J\SW WKH XPEUHOOD LV IRXQG LQ YDULRXV VKDSHV ,W LV GHSLFWHG DV D à DJHOOXP D IDQ RI palm-leaves, resembling those now carried behind the Pope in processions. In Chinese records, the oldest reference to a collapsible umbrella dates to the year 21 AD, when Wang Mang had one designed for a ceremonial four-wheeled carriage. The 2nd century commentator Fu Qian added that this collapsible umbrella of Wang Mang’s carriage had bendable joints which enabled them to be extended or retracted. In Siam (now Thailand), the umbrella was granted to only some of the subjects by the king. An umbrella with several circles, as if two or three umbrellas were fastened on the same stick, was permitted to the king alone, while nobles carried a single umbrella with painted cloths hanging from it. The monks also had umbrellas made of a palm-leaf cut and folded, so that the stem formed a handle. The style of modern umbrellas has evolved to the pocket use (1928 by Hans Haupt’s initiation) and folding umbrellas (1969 by Bradford E Phillips). Umbrellas have also been fashioned into hats in 1880 and as recently as 1987. Most umbrellas around the world are made in China, mostly in Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang. The city of Shangyu alone has more than a thousand umbrella factories. Chiang Mai has also its signature umbrella made of Sa paper and decorated with delicate paintings by local people in San Kamphaeng district (see more in FEATURE column). ‍܇‏

here were once 226 rain trees along the Chiang Mai – San Kamphaeng Road, until the road was widened and many of the trees were removed. Car accidents also destroyed some of the trees and now there are only 100 trees left according to Banjong Somboonchai, a tree conservationist in Chiang Mai. However, the leftover trees are not in good condition and need to be treated. SAN KAMPHAENG RETOUCHED Revisiting Regional Craftworks Think about San Kamphaeng and what normally comes to mind are Bor Sang’s umbrellas, women in Lanna dresses sitting on tricycles and holding umbrellas, mulberry paper, hot springs, rain trees along the road. The district is also well-known for being the hometown of the recent Prime Minister (and also the former exiled one). However, what most people link the district of San Kamphaeng to is the various handicrafts it produces.

Highway 1006 or Chiang Mai – San Kamphaeng Road, has long been known as the cultural road and the handicraft highway. It is lined with workshops and showrooms open to visitors to admire traditionally skilled craftspeople in action. BOR SANG UMBRELLA The traditional art of umbrella making and painting has been preserved and passed on from the distant past to the present day. By tradition, local villagers use an open area under their houses as workshops for making the umbrellas that are fashioned from either cloth or mulberry paper. Popular colors are red, pink and yellow. There are also small, colored, hanging balls around the brims of Bor Sang Umbrellas. The colorful designs make umbrellas stand out, and they are often patterned with traditional Thai LOOXVWUDWLRQV VXFK DV à RUDO DQG IROLDJH GHVLJQV 7KH ÀQDO process of umbrella making is leaving them to dry in the open space around the house, attracting tourists to buy them. Furthermore, Bor Sang Village holds its annual festival like Tonpao by focusing on its umbrellas which is called Bor Sang Umbrella & Handicraft Fair; held during January. Did you know? Though there is no certain evidence about the origin of this umbrella village, the tale of a monk who traveled to Burma around 100 years ago is widely believed. One day while a monk was visiting Burma, he was given a beautiful umbrella. He asked the how to make this attractive umbrella made of mulberry paper and bamboo strips. ‘ARTIFICIAL TEAK’ CHIANG MAI SUDALUCK hiang Mai Sudaluck is a house of skillful wood carvers and the result is delicate teak and rosewood furniture, decorative items and premium artworks of a high quality. The factory is grateful to its location in Chiang 0DL DV QHDUE\ LV DQ DUHD IHDWXULQJ ÀQH WHDN DQG rosewood. Twenty years ago the founder, when there were few competitors in the premium wood carving industry, established Chiang Mai Sudaluck and it has been successful ever since. Furthermore, with its own plantation forest in Chiang Rai, the factory can circulate the numbers of wood without much environmental concern. Whenever a mature tree is harvested, 3-4 new trees are planted to regenerate the forest. 7KH SURFHVV RI WKH IDFWRU\·V SURGXFWV LV LQWHUHVWLQJ Upon the arrival of the timbers at the factory, over 300 workers will start their jobs. After inspection and sawing, the wood has to be sun dried for approximately 3 months. To ensure problem free operation, the wood must then be kiln dried at a certain temperature, day and night, until the correct level of moisture is reached. Most of the furniture is in a traditional oriental style, designed and crafted by exclusive local craftsmen whose skill in wood-working and carving is part of their heritage handed down from their ancestors.

The gallery is peacefully VLWXDWHG EHVLGH SDGG\ Ă€HOGV IXOO RI WDOO WUHHV that shade the entrance to the lotus pond in front of the building. This was about 20 years ago when Nimmanhaemin was unpopular, but Soi 1 started making the area a cool spot. The business went well but Vichit found less time to paint. In 2006, he made a big decision to sell Gong Dee Company in order to have more WLPH IRU KLV ÀUVW ORYH SDLQWLQJ 6R KH UHWXUQHG to his birthplace in San Kamphaeng and set up Vichit Studio around seven years ago.

Vichit said that as he set the studio as an art gallery, many art lovers, tourists and artists come to visit so he gets to meet many interesting people and exchange ideas. The surroundings also LQÁXHQFH KLV ODWHVW SDLQWLQJV WKDW DUH PDGH XS RI SHDFHIXO landscapes, differing from his previous elegant Lanna style. The artist also told us that his place will be expanded soon adding more gallery buildings to show more artworks from his fellows, and more activities ZLOO EH LQFOXGHG ´6RPHWLPHV , ÀQG WKDW SHRSOH VSHQG a long time getting here for just a short time in the gallery. Ok, the coffee bar is good to have a long break and talk, but I want them to see more artworks, so I want an area that can show more artworks and hold exhibitions.” The plans have been written and construction will begin soon.
