KING’S FEATURE Ë タイ国王特集 Text: Rama IX Art Museum Foundation

n childhood, His Majesty the King Bhumibol had enjoyed creating toys by himself. He has developed great skills in the handicrafts, especially in carpentry. Sailing is one of the king’s most favorite hobbies. His Majesty the King started to build his first Enterprise Class boat in December 1964. The ‘Rajptain’ was built to international specifications. His Majesty used this boat to race against the Duke of Edinburgh during his visit to Thailand in 1965. ‘Navaruek’ in 1965. Many more were subsequently built, such as the ‘Vega 1’, ‘Vega 2’ and ‘Vega 3’. After that many international Moth Class boats were created. This class of sailing dinghies has an overall length limit of 11 feet, and a sail area limit of 75 square feet. The width, shape, and height of the mast are not restricted allowing for innovative design. His Majesty designed and built three types of boats in the Moth Class in 1966-1967 and called them the ‘Mod’, ‘Super Mod’ and ‘Micro Mod’. The last boat which His Majesty designed was the ‘Moke’ in November 1967. Apart from being a designer and boat builder, the King is also a yachtsman. On the 19th April, 1966, he sailed the ‘Vega I’ across the Gulf of Thailand from Hua Hin to Sattahip, a distance of 60 nautical miles. He also participated in the 4th South East Asian Peninsular Games in December of 1967, representing Thailand in the International OK Class sailing tournament. Using his own sailing boat, he won the event. The Gold Medal was presented by Her Majesty the Queen. The Thai Government has since decreed this date as the National Sports Day in his honor.

His Majesty’s great achievements in sailing are the result of several accumulative factors. He is an accomplished sailor and sportsman. His interest in sailing encompasses all aspects including the design of sailing boats. The fact that he is capable of carrying through his design ideas to a highly successful conclusion clearly demonstrates that he is a master craftsman.

@ Veranda Chiang Mai : The High Resort Cedar wood is a lightweight and dimensionally stable wood that lies flat and stays straight. It resists the natural tendency to crack and check as you might find in many other wood species. Its distinct cell structure discourages moisture rot by allowing it to dry out faster than outdoor furniture made from tropical hardwoods. Cedar woods feature in elegant shaped roofs at the lobby of Veranda Chiang Mai; the roof was designed like the shape of a houdah (elephant saddle). The design represents the cultural heritage of the North, whilst in using the texture of South African imported cedar woods it communicates the elegant contemporary style of the resort.

RAY CHARM @ Panyaden School

Bamboo is a traditional material used in shelter construction. As bamboo grows easily and quickly, and is in abundance in this country, Panyaden School, a new bilingual school in Chiang Mai, has used it to demonstrate to its students how to live mindful of the environment. The bamboo here has been creatively re-interpreted and re-formed into a curved shape like a ray figure for the making of the school’s entire treated roofs. Their shapes are exceptional, inspired by a ray fish, whilst the school’s walls were built from rammed earth or adobe bricks, with the layout based on the antler-fern leaf structure.

THE MOTHER EARTH @ Pun Pun, Mae Tang

Clay houses have been built since ancient times, when man left his cave and developed these easy-to-construct shelters. The technology used in later times kept clay houses in their original style, and with modern ecological concerns, clay houses have come back in trend. A single clay house may well need a smaller budget to build than a concrete or wooden house, but what is saved in monetary value is made up in the value of its charm. Making a clay house requires determination, detachment and more importantly friendship; to make a clay house, builders have to use their minds more than money. At present, many technologies and materials are adapted to be used with clay houses to make them more suitable with a modern lifestyle. A clay house has many good qualities especially in regards to ventilation of hot and cold air so one feels cold in summer and warm in winter. Clay is also a good material for construction as it makes residents feel like they are living close to nature. Found by Jone Jandai, Pun Pun is an organic farm, seed-saving operation, and sustainable living and learning center. Jone Jandai is one of the first persons introducing people to construct their houses by clay.

MINIMALIST

ANTIQUES @ De Siam Showroom

Unpainted cement walls are now a popular architectural choice, as they represent modernity and art in a minimalist style. To make this chic wall, builders have to concentrate on making a smooth color on the cement. As the walls have to be waxed whilst the concrete sets, builders have to wax in a limited area, so there may be differences in some remote parts of waxing. The unpainted wall cement seems to be easy to build; however not many skillful masons can create smooth walls. The new showroom of De Siam Antiques in Baan Tawai, Hang Dong district is a good example of beautiful unpainted cement walls. THE CONTAINER OF CULTURE

STATION @ 31st Century Museum of Contemporary Spirit

Renovating containers for a residence is nothing new, and they have been used for a range of functions such as the modern museum of artist Kamin Lertchaiprasert: 31st Century Museum of Contemporary Spirit, made from eight containers set down in the shape of number 31. “Station means a meeting place; and ‘container’ means a space for objects waiting to be packed for transportation. These two definitions are the starting point of an idea to introduce a choice of cultural spaces which don’t have to be a large permanent building. These business strategic questions, of course, spring up in everybody’s mind ahead of time, but for me they are questions I would like to learn by doing while I work on my project. I believe everybody can contribute to be a part of our cultural values without depending on any organized institution or the values of the historical mainstream. This space would be an open space for anyone to visit and share their experiences at any time. Activities would be altered as seen suitable,” said Kamin.

SILVER

SHRINE

@ Wat Sri Suphan, Wua Lai Road Wua Lai Community is the Chiang Mai’s famous community of silver carving artists. A prominent place of this location which is also the symbol of the area is the silver chapel of Wat Sri Suphan. Decorated in traditional Lanna architecture, the chapel is made of silver mixed with aluminium plates making it one of the only 2 silver-made buildings in the country (the another one is in Wat Muen Sarn where is located only 200 meters away from Wat Sri Suphan). Aluminium is remarkable for the metal’s low density and for its ability to resist corrosion. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials. Aluminium is not popular for constructing any parts of residences. It is only used to keep cold air as the main material of cold storage. Though the silver chapel is not practical for using as a residence, the architecture is truly exceptional as a shrine.

Tacoma, Washington – Glass is more than a typically brittle or optically transparent solid material. Glass is art. That is, according to an organization in Tacoma, Washington DC, who made a huge investment in constructing the Museum of Glass, with the concept ‘All Glass. All the Time’. The museum invites people to view contemporary glass art and watch artists create masterpieces from molten glass in the world’s largest Hot Shop – housed inside the iconic 90feet stainless steel cone – and marvel at edgy and inspiring exhibitions of glass in the galleries. The museum, the brainchild of Dr. Philip M. Phibbs, was designed by acclaimed Canadian architect Arthur Erickson and opened in July 2002. It is located on the Thea Foss Waterway and near the University of Washington Tacoma. The museum is linked to the downtown area via Bridge of Glass, which consists of thousands of glass-art masterpieces created by Dale Chihuly to make up the Venetian Wall, Seaform Pavilion and Crystal Towers. The museum exhibits a conical building, which houses the glass blowing demonstrations. The room reaches 27 meters and has two furnaces reaching temperatures of 1,320 °C. Several other outdoor exhibits include the :DWHU )RUHVW UHĂ“HFWLQJ SRROV DQG D ZDWHUIURQW promenade. Source & Photo: www.museumofglass.org

Completed in 2008, the Paula Rêgo Museum is set on a former public garden near the beaches of Cascais. Clad with red concrete, the Paula Rêgo Museum rises dramatically from the green landscape. The museum features two conical towers that bring to mind the famous gigantic chimneys of Sintra’s National Palace, while inside it shows a total of 121 works by the artist. The 750 square meters of space also includes an area for temporary exhibitions, a cafeteria, a bookshop, and an auditorium. Source & Photo: www.lonelyplanet.com

Did you know? Paula Rego was born in Lisbon but has been living between Cascais and London since the 1970s. She’s also considered one of the best living painters in Britain, and her works can be seen in several museums around the world. Her most valuable work is 1994’s ‘Baying’ which was sold by Sotheby’s last February for over one million dollars.

Big BambĂş

Central Park, New York Big Bambu is the world’s largest monumental bamboo installation, ultimately measuring 100 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 50 feet high, taking the form of a cresting wave that bridges realms of sculpture, architecture, and performance. Set against Central Park and its urban backdrop, Big Bambú suggests the complexity and energy of an ever-changing living organism. Built in 2010, but soon after removed, it is the thirteenth-consecutive single-artist installation on the Roof Garden. Big Bambu was an excellent example of an exotic installation work that was ingeniously created from natural materials.
