THE MELTING POT        A  Journey  to  the  Sunny  ity  of  Malacca

C

thought  long  and  hard  about  what  the  name  of  this  Malacca  feature  should  be.  I  visited  Malacca  in  March  and  it’s  taken  two  months  to  arrange  things  I  saw  in  the  city  and  a  few  weeks  to  give  it  a  title.  F inally,  it  came  to  me  and  when  it  did  it  was  obvious.  Given  this  former  famous  port  city  of  southern  Malaysia  has  many  cultures  and  religions  overlapping  SHDFHIXOO\ IURP WKH ÂżUVW 6XOWDQ WKURXJK WKH &KLQHVH to  colonization  from  the  Portuguese,  Dutch  and  British,  the  title  you  can  see  up  top  describes  Malacca  perfectly. When Kuala Lumpur was still just a tropical rain forest, Malacca was prospering from foreign merchants. This city is famed for making Malay language the Interlingua of South East Asian merchants and the world famous sea lane was also located here at the Malacca Straits. The region was the centre of the Malay world in the 15th and the 16th centuries before it fell to the hands of the Portuguese in 1511. Centuries of colonization by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British as well as development of Straits Chinese (Peranakan) FXOWXUH KDYH LQĂ XHQFHG WKH DUFKLWHFWXUH RI WKH WRZQ notably the Portuguese A Famosa, Dutch Stadthuys, and the Dutch, Chinese and British influenced traditional town houses. Recently the city has built many museums around the town, including the fascinating Museum of Long Lasting Beauty and the interesting Maritime Museum that houses a giant ship. ǟǕǭ ŕșȯßțȪȇâÉ‚É?ȧČ?ÇŠÇ&#x;ฉ
