This era can be traced back to 1962 when Chao Chai Suriwongse Na Chiang Mai, the heir prince of the ancient Lanna king found Suriwongse Hotel at the corner of Loy Kroh Road, which is now the Night Bazaar. When it was Ă&#x20AC;UVW EXLOW WKLV ZDV WKH PRVW PRGHUQ hotel in the city and today the original building remains in a good condition and is currently undergoing a renovation. Located on the Rincome Intersection, Rincome Hotel (background picture) was constructed in 1969 to support the new Chiang Mai â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Lampang Superhighway (at that time Nimmanhaemin area was very

suburban). The hotel was designed by Asst. Prof. Aun Nimmanhaemin and was one of the most modern hotels in the city after the well accepted Suriwongse Hotel. This was one of WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW KRWHOV LQ &KLDQJ 0DL WKDW featured a swimming pool and in-room bathtub. Today, these types of accommodation dominate the city landscape. The prominent scene of this era was the rise of the souvenir night market on Chang Klan Road, known as the Night Bazaar. What was started by Suriwongse Hotel and Chiang Inn Hotel, was later expanded by merchants, while 3 & 4 star hotels started to emerge such as Pornping Tower Hotel Petch Ngam Hotel (1992), Royal Lanna, Royal Princess Hotel Chiang Mai, Centara Duang Tawan Hotel, and D2 Hotel Chiang Mai. Along with standard hotels, many Sois along the Chang Klan Road started to become packed with small hotels, motels and guesthouses supporting low budget tourists. When Kuala Lumpur was still just a tropical rain forest, Malacca was prospering from foreign merchants. he trip started at the center of the old town when we passed through Little India to the estuary of the Malacca River where the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s landmark Dutch Square is situated. This red building was built between 1641 and 1660 on the ruins of a Portuguese fort, by using imported bricks and is believed to be the oldest Dutch building LQ WKH (DVW 7KH 6WDGWKX\V RI 0DODFFD ZDV WKH RIĂ&#x20AC;FLDO residence of the Dutch Governor that today houses the Historic Museum and Ethnography Museum displaying many traditional bridal costumes and relics. To relax, we took a walk up the hill to St. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cathedral (founded in 1521 as a monument to Francis Xavier) and enjoyed a birdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eye view of the seaside. You could also chill out by sailing to the River of Malacca where ancient riverside houses and fancy paintings adorning the walls can be found. Nearby the Dutch Square lay the Aâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Formosa Fort, a relic of the prosperous Portuguese built in 1511; its enduring gate makes for a memorable photo.
