SAWAT DII assport  to  Suvannaphoum  is  the  result  of  a  group  of  Chiang  Mai  people’s  passion  for  Lanna  art  and  Southeast  Asian  culture,  and  was  established  in  2FWREHU :H ZHUH WKH ¿UVW ELOLQJXDO PDJD]LQH LQ Chiang  Mai  to  feature  English  and  Japanese  languages,  created  by  a  Thai  team  keen  to  showcase  something  new  about  Southeast  Asian  travel  every  month.

'XULQJ WKH WHQ \HDUV RI WKH PDJD]LQHÂśV SXEOLFDWLRQ many  people  would  ask  what  ‘Suvannaphoum’  meant.  It  is  a  controversial  matter  to  identify  the  real  Suvannaphoum  area,  as  there  are  many  different  stories  of  this  word  found  across  the  region.  We  have  no  conclusive  evidence  about  the  exact  location,  and  simply  created  content  based  on  our  extensive  research.  ‘Suvannaphoum’  means  the  golden  land  and  when  the  Suvarnabhummi  International  Airport  was  established,  this  word  became  well  known  (although  we  had  nothing  to  do  with  the  airport’s  corrupt  construction).

Throughout  our  existence,  we  have  discovered  new  passions,  received  good  and  bad  feedback,  enjoyed  marketing  success  and  lived  through  severe  economic  FULVHV +RZHYHU ZHœYH GRQH WKLV PDJD]LQH ZLWK passion  and  happiness,  and  that’s  why  we’ve  survived  for  a  decade.

It  is  thus  with  a  heavy  heart  that,  I,  as  the  founder  of  Passport  to  Suvannaphoum  and  representative  of  this  PDJD]LQH PXVW LQIRUP \RX WKDW ZH KDYH GHFLGHG WR SDXVH SXEOLFDWLRQ RI WKH PDJD]LQH WR UHDVVHVV RXU LGHDV DQG UHYLVH HYHU\ SDUW RI WKH PDJD]LQH LQ RUGHU WR ODXQFK something  new  and  improved  in  the  near  future.  During  this  time,  we  will  remain  active,  serving  the  local  FRPPXQLW\ LQ RXU 7KDL ODQJXDJH PDJD]LQH  ‘FINE  DAE’  (see  more  on  pages  70-­71).

water  wheel  is  a  machine  for  converting  the  energy  of  falling  water  into  useful  forms  of  SRZHU (YROYLQJ WKH ÀRDWDWLRQ W\SH RI ZDWHU ZKHHO pump,  Thailand’s  beloved  King  created  a  unique  water  wheel  for  his  nation  called  Chaipattana  Water  Wheel  on  24thDecember  1988.

From  1983-­1987,  His  Majesty  the  King  suggested  the  necessity  of  using  treated  water.  At  the  time  another  method  involved  the  use  of  water  hyacinth  and  DVVRUWHG DTXDWLF SODQWV WR ÂżOWHU ZDVWH ZDWHU ZKLFK +LV Majesty  called  ‘evil  overcoming  evil’.  Such  methods  were  capable  of  alleviating  and  effectively  solving  the  problems  to  a  certain  extent.

This  device  was  commissioned  for  production  jointly  by  the  Chaipattana  Foundation  under  His  Majesty’s  patronage  and  the  Department  of  Irrigation.  It  has  become  widely  known  as  ‘the  Chaipattana  Water  Wheel’,  a  locally  produced  low-­cost  machine  ZKLFK OHVVHQV WKH ÂżQDQFLDO EXUGHQ RI WKH JRYHUQPHQW in  treating  water.  The  Chaipattana  Water  Wheel  plays  an  important  role  in  purifying  water  ways  thus  provid-­ ing  a  safe  habitat  for  animals  and  potable  water  for  the  area’s  human  population.

His  Majesty  graciously  consented  for  the  Chaipattana  Aerator  to  be  patented  under  his  name,  and  the  patent  was  issued  on  2nd  February,  1993.  It  is  the  world’s  QLQWK DHUDWRU WR EH SDWHQWHG DQG WKH ¿UVW SDWHQW WR EH issued  to  a  monarch.

hen  I  visited  Siem  Reap  late  last  year  it  was  the  period  of  the  ELJ ÀRRGV LQ %DQJNRN ZKHQ 'RQ 0XHDQJ $LUSRUW DQG PDQ\ downtown  places  were  under  water.  Siem  Reap  was  also  affected.  Tourists  had  to  roll  up  their  long  trouser  legs  to  walk  along  the  submerged  streets  of  the  colonial  buildings  downtown.  Furthermore,  ancient  Khmer  places  such  as  Bantray  Srei  and  the  passage  way  to  Angkor  Thom  were  flooded.  However  one  of  the  attractions  locals  were  not  worried  about  was  Kompong  Phluk  Floating  Village.

Positioned  in  Siem  Reap  in  the  northern  central  part  of  Cambodia,  WKH Ă€RDWLQJ YLOODJH DFWV DV D UHDO ORFDO YLOODJH EXW RQH WKDW KDV EHHQ developed  into  a  tourist  attraction;Íž  something  that  took  place  once  Angkor  Wat  and  Angkor  Thom  became  fully  opened  to  travelers.  There  are  three  main  areas  open  to  visitors:  touristy  and  easily  DFFHVVLEOH &KRQJ .QHDV WKH Ă€RDWLQJ YLOODJH RI .RPSRQJ 3KOXN and  the  stilted  community  of  Kompong  Khleang.  It’s  about  a  20  minutes  drive,  or  16  kilometers,  to  downtown  where  a  farmer  village  is  situated  along  the  lake.  Boat  tickets  are  available  at  the  village  for  20  dollars  and  takes  about  45  minutes  FUXLVLQJ IURP WKH VKRUH WR WKH Ă€RDWLQJ YLOODJH 7KH 7RQOH 6DS LV XQLTXH IRU WZR UHDVRQV WKH ODNHÂśV Ă€RZ FKDQJHV direction  twice  a  year  and  the  portion  that  forms  the  lake  expands  and  shrinks  dramatically  with  the  seasons.  From  November  to  May,  Cambodia’s  dry  season,  the  Tonle  Sap  drains  into  the  Mekong  River  at  P hnom  P enh.  S o,  d uring  t his  s eason,  t he  f loating  village  ZLOO QRW EH WKH Ă€RDWLQJ YLOODJH DQ\PRUH IURP WKH GLUW DORQJ WKH ODQG you  can  see  the  high  bamboo  cellars  of  the  houses.  It’s  a  very  strange  ambience  and  one  you  can  experience  by  visiting  Lompong  Phluk  IURP 0DUFK WR 0D\ +RZHYHU WR VHH D Ă€RDWLQJ YLOODJH LQ LWV SURSHU state,  the  rainy  season  is  the  best  time  to  visit.  From  June,  the  Tonle  Sap  will  back  up  to  form  an  enormous  lake  and  the  high  cellars  of  the  houses  in  the  Kompong  Phluk  will  also  back  to  their  original  form.  Â

When  I  arrived  at  the  dock  I  was  led  into  a  small  boat  with  a  driver  (the  ship  has  no  tour  guide,  so  if  you  want  to  learn  something,  bring  your  own  personal  tour  guide).  As  you  may  be  aware,  Cambodia  is  in  the  midst  of  recovering  IURP VRPH RI WKH ZRUVW Ă€RRGLQJ LQ GHFDGHV DQG I  was  about  to  visit  a  heavily  affected  area.  Nevertheless,  the  trip  went  well.  The  ship  brought  me  and  three  other  companions  from  the  west  to  the  main  route  of  the  village  where  many  shops,  restaurants  and  houses  are  in  a  state  of  water-­assisted  elevation.  The  village  has  all  the  basic  facilities  for  its  residents  -­  a  temple,  a  stupa  to  keep  the  ashes  of  the  departed,  a  monastery,  and  schools.  There  is  no  western  hospital,  and  the  people  opt  for  traditional  medicines  to  treat  minor  illnesses;Íž  only  in  serious  cases  do  they  go  to  a  hospital  in  Siem  Reap.  The  government  of  ¿FH EXLOW LQ FRQFUHWH LV VHW RQ WKH HQG RI WKH main  route. saw  the  simply  daily  life  of  villagers:  children  going  to  school  and  villagers  sailing  to  temple.  I  had  to  UHPLQG P\VHOI , ZDV ÀRDWLQJ RQ D PDVVLYH ERG\ RI ZDWHU when  I  saw  pet  dogs  and  pigs  hanging  out  on  balconies,  and  bicycles  and  motorbikes  parked  precariously  inside  houses.

During  the  trip,  the  driver  told  us  about  the  bizarre  FODVV GLYLGH EHWZHHQ WKRVH ZLWK ÀRDWLQJ KRXVHV ZKR WHQG to  be  poorer,  and  those  with  stilted  homes,  who  tend  to  be  PRUH ¿QDQFLDOO\ FRPIRUWDEOH +RZHYHU ZKHQ WKH ÀRRGHG lake  reaches  more  than  15  meters,  it  is  those  with  stilted  homes  that  are  forced  to  abandon  them  for  dry  land.  In  the  wet  season,  the  lakes  usually  reaches  about  10  meters,  while  in  the  dry  season  the  tour  forgoes  a  boat  and  drives  through  the  village,  with  the  stilted  homes  towering  above.

More  interesting  than  the  floating  and  stilted   structures  however  were  the  people.  I  was  delighted  WR ÂżQG DQ DUHD WKDW VHHPHG XQWRXFKHG E\ WKH UHVW RI WKH world.  The  Tonle  Sap  River  seems  to  be  one  of  these  places  where  time  stands  still.  Life  is  so  slow  but  not  easy  (especially  for  those  who  was  not  born  in  this  village).  It’s  weird  to  think  they  live  on  a  boat  for  about  8-­9  months  of  the  year  and  then  switch  to  living  on  the  ground  in  strange  human-­scale  buildings  for  another  3  months.    I’ve  previously  visited  Amphawa  Floating  Market  and  WKH Ă€RDWLQJ YLOODJH LQ 0\DQPDUÂśV ,QOH /DNH EXW .RPSRQJ Phluk  was  the  most  eye-­opening  and  charming  experience  of  them  all. ost  Thais  are  familiar  with  the  Shan  State  from  their  shopping  trips  at  Tachileik  District’s  Mae  Sai  border,  which  also  represents  the  start  of  many  a  journey  to  the  south  of  China  by  car.  And  there  is  a  charming  and  serene  site  located  near  Shan  State’s  capital  Taunggyi,  namely  Lake  Inle,  the  nation’s  second  largest  lake.  Apart  from  being  beautiful  and  tranquil  water  source,  the  lake  also  features  many  attractions  that  you  must  try  and  see  if  you  ever  visit  the  country.

The people of Inle Lake (called Intha), some 70,000 of them, live in four cities bordering the lake, in numerous smallvillages along the lake’s shores, and on the lake itself; he entire lake area is in Nyaung Shwe township. M a l a c c a  i s  renowned  for  being  a  16 th  Century  ocean  market  junction  at  the  Straits  of  Malacca.  It  was  also  the  meeting  p oint  between  the  East  and  the  West,  reflected  today  by  its  colonial  architecture,  b l e n d i n g  Portuguese,  Chinese  and  British  styles.  The  old  town  of  Malacca  is  therefore  the  charm  of  the  city,  and  was  listed  as  a  UNESCO  World  Heritage  Site  in  2008.

Every day and all year round, both locals and foreigners come to soak in its history and diverse architecture along its banks in the form of old churches, mosques, bridges, clan houses, warehouses, temples and villages that have withstood the test of time.

The Malacca River cruise is the biggest surprise. The muddy, murky water is now quite clear, with a tinge of emerald green. Clean embankments on both sides stretch for several kilometres. The river has also been widened and a mechanical device installed to control the depth of the water.

The idea was to make the river completely pollution-free, so as to develop exquisite gardens on its banks, and pave the pedestrian pathways to perfection.

Along the way, you will have a chance to experience the multi-cultural and historical fabric of the country.

One can even see the Malacca tree, under which Parameswara was so inspired by the sight of a mouse deer kicking a dog that he named the place â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Malaccaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

There are two types of cruises. One offers recorded commentaries and the other has a tour guide on board. The approximate touring time for the cruise is about 45 minutes, travelling 9 kilometers from the Quayside Heritage Centre to Taman Rempah, Pangkalan Rama. The boats are available daily at thirty minute intervals between the following times: 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 11.30 p.m.

Piazza Sam Marco or St. Mark’s Square iazza San Marco or St Mark’s Square is the principal public square of Venice. It is one of the few great urban spaces in Europe where human voices prevail over WKH VRXQGV RI PRWRUL]HG WUDI¿F 7KH 3LD]]D LV GRPLQDWHG at its eastern end by the great church of St Mark. It is described here by a perambulation starting from the west front of the church and proceeding to the right. The St Mark’s Basilica is well known in its opulent design, gilded Byzantine mosaics, and its status as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, from the 11th century on the building has been known by the nickname Chiesa d’Oro (Church of gold). It is also the best known examples of Byzantine architecture.

Nearby the St Mark’s Basilica, there is the 98.6-­meter tall Campanile, the city’s clock tower. Its belfry is topped by a cube, alternate faces of which show the Lion of St. Mark and the female representation of Venice.

Aside from its outstanding landscape, Venice is also renowned for its traditional culture that forms part of the precious heritage of Italy. Venetian masks are known throughout the globe, and are a recent popular souvenir of the city. Every February, the Carnevale di Venezia known as the mask festival is held for two weeks where Venetians wear baroque dresses and masks.
