SAWAT DII About one hundred years ago the train was the most modern and popular form of public transport in Thailand. Nowadays, when thinking about the train, one has visions of a retro transporting machine. Apart from the big change to diesel from steam locomotive, trains in Thailand remain unchanged. The railways do not support the high speed lifestyles of modern people, yet it is still very important for those who live in the countryside as well as for travelers with a chilled spirit. What you get from a train ride is not only arriving at your destination but also a glimpse into simple folks’ lives, a colorful journey and memories;; especially on the northern line which crosses valleys and runs through tunnels, where the scenes are exceptional. Listen to the sound of metal wheels running on the rail, feel a relaxed breeze blowing through the windows and admire the lives and nature through the windows. It is enjoyable to spend some of your leisure time exploring the country by train. It will be great if the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) added regional connections such as a railway that connected Chiang Mai to Nong Khai or to Buriram. It would be far better for passengers as they wouldn’t have to waste time changing trains at annoying Bangkok. Jirat Prasertsup

RADITIONAL NORTHERN THAI HOUSE FROM MAE TAENG @ Lanna Traditional Houses Museum Of the 6 ancient houses (and 2 rice granaries) at the Lanna Traditional House Museum, the Center for Promotion of Arts and Culture, Chiang Mai University, the Northern Thai House from Mae Taeng district seems to be the most simple and one that can still be found in certain parts of upcountry Chiang Mai. However, the rapid decrease of the old houses in rural areas has impacted the traditional houses as many have been demolished and with them the influential architecture of our ancestors. So, we have to say a big thank you to the Center for Promotion of Arts and Culture, Chiang Mai University for being a great source of Lanna ancient architecture.
The Nor thern Thai house from Mae Taeng district exhibited in the Lanna Traditional House Museum was constructed in 1917 in Baan Pa Phai, Tambon Chor Lae. The house was originally owned by Father Noi Ping, and later inherited by Mrs. Kan Takham. In 2008, the house was re-constructed and re-moved to the Center for Promotion of Arts and Culture, CMU. Th e fo r m o f t h i s h o u s e w a s developed from a local single house and would have accommodated a small family of 3-5 members. Hardwood is used throughout, with its roof, made of ‘din kor’ or clay tiles, covering a large front porch and the front terrace. From the hom lin, or porch, a hallway runs to the

bedroom at the back of the house. There is a gutter on the joint of the gables’ eaves, and gables jut out to cover the ‘toen‘ (shady porch) and ‘jarn’ (sunny porch). The posts of the house are teak, which uses a beam system.

Nuts & bolts are essential elements when it comes to assembling something properly; whilst bolts are also useless without nuts, and vice versa. A bolt or screw is a type of fastener characterized by a helical ridge, known as an external thread, wrapped around a cylinder. Most screw threads are designed to mate with a complementary thread, known as an internal thread or a nut. The bolt was first created by the Romans by fastening wood plates, and was made of brass or silver by carving or melting into the screw form. This kind of screw, however, disappeared with the collapse of the Roman Empire. Modern nuts & bolts were found in 14th century, and were generally rough and handmade, with users having to find the appropriate shape of nut for fastening their bolts with. Today there are many kinds of screws and nuts such as the deck screw, drywall screw, eye screw, cap nut, and barrel nut.
Notes The world’s most popular bolt type is the sheet metal screw which has a short strand body. Bolts today are most commonly made from carbon iron, stainless steel and alloys. Eli Whitney was the first person to produce a bolt that could be used with all nuts in 1801. In the late 1400, world famous German artist John Guttenberg used the strain screw for his piece mould, which was his first printing work. Though the screw-cutting machine was first invented by Jaques Besson in 1568, Leonardo Da Vinci designed this machine in the 14th century. Rugg & Barnes Factory was the first factory to produce nuts & bolts in 1840. At that time, the company could produce 500 pieces of fine iron bolts and nuts per day. In slang terminology, ‘nuts & bolts’ refers to detailed practical information about how something works or how something can be accomplished.

had only 25,000 Baht when I hatched the plan to visit my godmother in Belgium, so I had to WDNH Ă’QG WKH FKHDSHVW ZD\ WR JHW there,â€? Por said about the origin of his arduous trip in April 2009: he had chosen the Trans-Siberian railway to save money. Initially he accessed Laos from Chiang Khong district, and then entered China at Dali, before catching a bus to Beijing. After traveling around the east of China the long trip had begun. A memorable event of the trip was when Por lived in a guesthouse in Ulaan-Baatar, Mongolia. He found a Matouqin (traditional Mongolian bowed string instrument) here and when the owner of the guesthouse saw that Por was interested in it, he asked Por to have a jam with his saxophone. “The music he played was very exotic. Just by the melody I could tell about the greatness of Mongolia and it left a big impression on me. At that time I dared not to play my saxophone as he was just too good.â€? From China via Mongolia to Moscow, the views are breathtaking. In Mongolia, the sun sets around 11 pm and the scenery is constantly changing from snowy forests through glorious lakes to YDVW Ă’HOGV Ăˆ:KHQHYHU , JRW XS WKH WLPH ]RQH would have changed, so I never knew if it was day or night. It was like sitting in a time-machine...a classic time machine.â€? “My daily activity on the train was sketching. Once a passenger saw my work and asked me to paint his picture. After that other passengers started to form an orderly queue. I painted over ten people a day covering Chinese, Mongolian, Russian and European backpackers. It was a great way to pass the time on a long and exhausting trip. Many Mongolian merchants take the train frequently between China to Moscow for trading, spending over 20 days per month on the train. It is very boring, yet, it is their work. So, making relationships on the train is better than sitting quietly. For me, just staying on the train for a few days was boring, as even though the views outside was beautiful, I had to do something to burn time.
“The most exciting event during the trip was when I arrived in Moscow. The Russian immigration police did not believe that I was a tourist. At that time I had only 200 Euros and the police wondered how I would return to Thailand. So, I spent 12 hours in prison. After the long trip on the train, I was so H[KDXVWHG DQG WKH Ă’UVW SODFH , UHVWHG LQ ZDV D cage,â€? he grinned. I asked Por about how he felt before and after this trip. He took a few seconds to think and answered “I was afraid every time before I traveled especially when I had to travel alone. I wouldn’t know what I would face during the trip, and was afraid that someone might steal my saxophone. When I slept on the street, I had to tie the saxophone to my shoelaces. However, despite my fear, WKHUH ZDV VWLOO FRXUDJH WR Ă’QG VRPHWKLQJ QHZ VR , never gave up. Just having something to eat and a place to rest, I can go anywhere. I wasn’t too nervous before this trip because if you think too much you start to worry. A few people have prepared monks’ alms and the elderly walk slowly on the pavements to exercise. At the railway station, however, the scene is very different. As the next train that’s leaving is not air-conditioned, some passengers are taking their dogs too and the barking is adding to the annoying noises. Any day at this time, the same scene plays out.

One morning, we were a part of this scene. Showing our ID cards to the ticket sellers to get free tickets, we were going to Lampang at 6.45 a.m. Free tickets are available for 3rd class trains for Thai citizens. The free run has no air-conditioning and the seats are narrow and stiff. If you come alone, you have to sit next to a stranger in a small seat and face two others. It’s not convenient but some people are convinced it’s charming, as conversations can be struck up throughout the slow, laid-back journey. Compared to the bus, a train ride is like a turtle racing a rabbit. An average bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok takes about 9 hours, whilst a 1st class rapid train takes over 14 hours and a general train often takes over 20 hours! Nevertheless many people opt for the railway as their primary means of transportation. Safety may be a reason for senior passengers; foreign backpackers claim to enjoy the beautiful views; whilst workers enjoy the free fares. Regrettably even after various demands, the railway system in Thailand is hugely under developed. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) was founded in 1890 before Japan FRQVWUXFWHG LWV RZQ RÔFLDO UDLOZD\V -DSDQHVH HQJLQHHUV YLVLWHG 7KDLODQG to study how to manage the railway system, and now it is at the forefront of railway systems in the world, and has the world’s fastest train reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h in Shinkansen. However, the Thai railway remains a classic.

FEATURE Going from Chiang Mai to the south by train, one travels along the train lines in reverse as to how they work originally constructed. Starting from Hua Lamphong, Bangkok, King Chulalongkorn ordered to construct the 1.435 meters width railway leading from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in 1887.
The northern line started from Lopburi to Nakhonsawan, Phitsanulok, Uttradit and Lampang. Since constructing a rail between Lampang and Chiang Mai was a very difficult task as the area has deep forests and high mountains, especially in Khun Tan district of Lampang, it is said that over 1,000 workers died during the construction of Khun Tan Tunnel due to jungle fever, suffocation and general accidents. It took 11 years (from 1907 – 1918) for workers to drill through the mountain of Khun Tan, which at 1,352 meters long is the longest railway tunnel in Thailand. Finally, people from Bangkok were arriving in Chiang Mai by train in 1926. The total distance of northern railway from Lopburi is 661 kilometers.

station. However, we bypassed the National Park, and went through the dark tunnel and 8 kilometer Iron Bridge over the deep abyss. Running over the forest, the view from the train’s windows are soul-stirring and exotic. After the train passed through the forest, the colonial style buildings and the white clock image on the platform indicated we had arrived. It was 10 a.m. and about 3 hours from Chiang Mai to Lampang; 2 times longer than the bus and almost 3 times longer than by car. Nonetheless, many passengers are still happy to travel by rail. We don’ know the exact reasons why they are satisfied with this slow and old long worm, but after our short trip, we had our own reasons... We think that the train is a form of on land transportation epitomizing the passion of a journey that you cannot find from other vehicles. If you have the time, we recommend you to try a free ride once, it’s a lot of fun.
For those who live in a metropolis and have never taken this trip, the landscape from Chiang Mai to Lampang is fantastic; the paddy fields, peaceful mountains, rivers and villages along the railway make for impressive images. A while before arriving at Khun Tan Station, the White Bridge welcomes the train with beautiful landscape. The outstanding white bridge over the green fields of the golf course makes a classic scene, whilst the small charming village in front of Khun Tan Tunnel is very quaint. Sometimes, the train stops here for a while waiting for other trains to pass through
the tunnel first whilst local woman hawkers with food come into the train selling boiled eggs, fried pork with sticky rice, mangoes, pineapples and beverages. Normally, they come with three other companions. All of them walk in a line from the first bogie to the last. If you miss the first hawker, the second person comes after in few seconds followed by the third and the fourth shortly after, all selling the same things. For nature lovers, we recommend stopping at Khun Tan Tunnel at Doi Khun Tan National Park. The entrance to the National Park is situated at the railway
How to drill a tunnel? First, the workers used hand drills or knocked on the solid granite bedrocks to make a small hole which was enough to put in dynamite. For huge rocks where workers could not use dynamite, they would heat the granite then splash cold water on it to break them. Workers had to drill both sides of the mountain which took about 8 years to converge the drill at the middle of the mountain. Then, workers took another 3 years to make the concrete wall inside the cave and laid the iron railway. Before laying the railway through the tunnel, many workers died during this process because the railway had to trail over 3 high abysses where it was easy to have a fatal accident.

A hawker told me that it’s open every day whilst the owner of a food shop nearby said it opens every other day. It may well add to the charm and enhance the classic architecture of the Lampang Railway Station, but I thought it simply blended in nicely with the landscape. 20 Baht everywhere,” a cab driver said. Everywhere means anywhere in downtown Lampang. I asked him where I could find a horse carriage. Yes, 20 Baht is very cheap to travel around Lampang, especially when compared to a 300 Baht trip on a horse carriage, yet tourists prefer to pay more for low cost (and living) vehicles, especially in Lampang.

e asked the cab to pick us up at the Old City Hall – one of the parking stations of the horse carriage. There are five in total: Old City Hall (or beside the Shrine of Lampang City Pillar), Tipchang Hotel (near the Clock Tower), in front of the Municipal School 4, Wieng Lakor Hotel and Lampang Wiang Thong Hotel. Akin to the train, the horse carriage will bring you back to the good old days of Lampang. Used as a means of transportation in Lampang province during the reign of King Rama V, the first horse carriage was bought from Bangkok. When the railway station was built, the city was starting to become developed and horse carriages were widely used. The first train to go on the northern route to Nakhon Lampang Station was on 1st April, 1916 during the reign of King Rama VI. Passengers were brought from Nakhon Lampang Station to the city by horse carriage, called ‘Rot Ma Taxi’. The wheeled vehicle in Lampang was founded by Khun Uthankhadee in 1949, 39 years after the horse carriage. In 1952, Chow Boonsong Na Lampang changed the name of the wheeled vehicle to ‘horse carriage’ and today there are almost 200 carriages available for daily Lampang city tours.

tarting at the Old City Hall, we rode eastwards on Boonyawart Road and crossed Khelang Bridge to Northern Wang River at Tamah-O community. Ratpattana Road is a very interesting place, built during the period of teakwood trading with Burma, so the road has many beautiful teak houses. Baan Saonak House (the wooden house of 116 teak pillars) is located in this area. Not far from Baan Sao Nak is Wat Pong Sanuk, a temple awarded the ‘Award of Merit’ by UNESCO in 2008, revealing the path of cultural preservation and historical architecture. Furthermore, though the carriage does not pass by it, we also recommend a visit to Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao, the prominent temple of Lampang where the Emerald Buddha was once enshrined. Interesting structures include the large Chedi containing the hair of the Lord Buddha, a Burmese-style Mondop (monk’s residential quarters), an ancient Viharn and a museum exhibiting ancient relics of the Lanna era.

ack to the south side of the city via the classic white Ratsadaphisek Bridge, the next attraction was Kad Kongta or the old China market. The market is located beside the Wang River. In the past, the market was the centre of business and shipping of Lampang downtown. Many colonial style buildings in various styles such as ginger bread, Manila and Thai panya styles are evidence of Lampang’s glory days around the bank of Wang River. Also, it is very good to see that Lampang people have preserved these old buildings. Don’t forget to visit Lampang Art Museum – the only private art museum in Lampang presenting monthly exhibitions. Every weekend, Kad Kongta hosts a lively Walking Street while the peaceful weekdays make the scene very pleasant. The next passage way, Wat Sri Rong Muang is situated on the right, a famous Burmese style temple. The outstanding structure is exquisite and decorated with colorful mirrors and teak woodcarvings primed with black lacquer and covered with gold leaves. It was built by Burmese teak merchants who lived n Lampang during the 1920’s.
We returned to downtown through Chat Chai Road via the Clock Tower and Boonyawat Road. Luckily, we ZHUH QRW RQFH GLVUXSWHG E\ WUDÔF jams and throughout the route, we admired the different periods of Lampang’s history through different buildings; the ancient time during 13 – 24 BE via Wat Pong Sanuk and Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao; the classic time about 100 years ago via Kad Kongta, Ratsadaphisek Bridge, Baan Saonak House, Wat Sri Rong Muang and Lampang Railway Station; and modern Lampang via the Clock Tower, Seree Plaza and public parks. We caught the cab back to the railway station in the evening. I forgot to notice that the fountain in front of the station was closed as I wasn’t particularly interested. I was more concerned with the classic scenes around Lampang where old teakwood houses and ancient temples feature attractively beside colonial concrete buildings and modern row-houses; the mix of regional architecture blends well with Burmese and European LQÓXHQFHV /LYHV GRZQWRZQ DUH ODLG back and importantly people have a sense of preservation, ensuring Lampang city will remain a classic.

Method: Fry risotto rice with butter and add diced onions and wine into the pan. Boil the rice with chicken stock without pouring out the water. The rice will then be cooked outside whilst the inside will remain a bit crispy. Add saffron and parmesan cheese into the dish and season with salt and pepper. Ferment the salmon with salt, pepper and prime leaves. Then grill on a medium heat until the salmon looks crispy.
