As magazine publishers, we are always required to change our ideas depending on the current conditions. I, for one, do not like to frame my ideas and am sure that many people are the same. I trust my team but this time we didn’t talk too much. This issue, I asked the columnists to write less and forced the photography team to take more pictures. This month, we simply wanted to showcase attractive pictures of decorative sites around Chiang Mai, hoping that customers employ us to take photos as these days earning a crust just from advertising is not enough. However, as the photographers worked so hard, the FKHĂŒEWNV VJKPI YCU EJQQUKPI YJKEJ QH VJG OCP[ DGCWVKHWN pictures to use and which to cut. he contemporary style building on the hill leading to Doi Angkhang has been standing discreetly for over 30 years. In that time the First Royal Food Factory (Fang) has continuously transformed agricultural produce into commercial products; improving the standard of living among the people in Mae Ngorn River Basin and Doi Angkhang areas as it does so. The factory came about as a result of His Majesty the King’s vision to ease social economic and environmental matters in a holistic and sustainable way. When I arrive at The First Royal Factory at Fang Museum, it doesn’t take long to see how the community relates to the factory and museum. The museum functions in bringing together and presenting its chronicles through exhibitions, anthological records and artifacts for the purpose of demonstrating the thought process of the King in solving and developing the country in an integrated manner. At the museum, you can rent a bicycle and ride around Banyang Village and glimpse at the simple and tranquil lives of Chinese Yunnan people. However I spent the day at the museum and after signing in a guestbook I was given an orientation about the identity of the organization and the design of the museum. www.svpmagazine.com

The interior design of the museum is separated by content and history and is divided into 5 parts. Marginal People Room offers the introduction of the early Chinese Yunnan people who immigrated to Banyang Village. Royal Project History Room shows the history of the King’s projects and rare pictures of the King during his visits here. The King generated a way to solve problems without violence that led to an international outpouring of respect for him.

The First Royal Food Factory at Fang displays the King’s vision of the industrialization of Fang, exhibiting VJG FCOCIG QH VJG QQF YJKEJ ECWUGF KPFWUVT[ to grind to a halt. A shadow drama presents the production procedure of Chinese Yunnan at that time. Love of King Room praises the kindness of the King and Doi Kham Co. NOTE:

The museum was initiated by Her Royal Highness Maha Chakri Sirindhorn who proposed the idea to develop the area into a learning center, in the form of a Living Site Museum. As a tourist destination, the museum combines ecotourism, agricultural, industrial and environmental conservation with tradition, while demonstrating the thought process of His Majesty the King in solving and developing the country in an integrated manner. www.svpmagazine.com

Khun Top - Yutthana Mohprasit ontemporary Lanna design was prominent in Chiang Mai around 5 years ago as you can see in many hotels, resorts and restaurants, as well as in houses decorated in this style: a cool combination of traditional Lanna, hill tribe adornments, oriental sense CPF OQFGTP KPÍWGPEG Yutthana Mohprasit is an interior designer who introduced contemporary Lanna to the country. Graduating from the Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University, he worked in Bangkok for a while with Charun Angsawanon, a famous interior designer. As he was familiar with Chiang Mai, he returned to the city to be a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture at Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna. Then, he retired from the university to open CP KPVGTKQT QHÌEG CV JKU JQOG KP VJG 5CP -CORJCGPI district. Yutthana is known for his neat and attractive works suchasthe Saen Kham Terrace Restaurant, RatiLanna Riverside Spa Resort Chiang Mai and other private houses that have been published in Ban Lae Suan

Magazine (a famous Thai language decorative magazine). Recently, he designed The Unique Condo @ Nimman, a new fully-furnished luxury condominium where Yutthana brought his passion of hill-tribe patterns to the luxury decoration. As he grew up in Chiang Mai, he was inspired by local crafts and hill-tribes, giving them his unique signature. “Chiang Mai has an abundant source of handicrafts and expert craftsmen. It is great for me to be able to develop new forms of these works,” he said. Most of his decorations and furniture are newly created to suit the rooms he designs. “It’s regrettable for craftsmen that when they create new works, they will be copied by others and then widely distributed. It wrecks the morale of the originators,” said Yutthana. So he recommended the few decorative shops in Chiang Mai that feature original ideas he has been inspired by.

GALLERY-窶心TYLE HOME Khun Pop-Somphop Thunyaraksa and Ian Gilman spend their time living between Scotland and Chiang Mai. In Chiang Mai, they transformed land in Baan Mae Nai Soi 1, Mae Rim district, into the Mae Nai Gardens, a nature-based tropical-style guesthouse. Then, among the area of Mae Nai Gardens, they built a new modern style house in which to live. Having worked for a long time as a reporter for Bangkok Post, Khun Pang quit her job and followed her husband who came here to open the well-known noodle shop. BAANNOI NORNMUAN ‘Artistic Locality’ Among the boutique hotels that focus on being chic and modern, Baannoi Nornmuan stands out. This guesthouse has gone back to basics, inspired by northern folk people from a bygone era who spent their lives amongst trees and nature, with humble beliefs and honest crafts. It’s a place that passes on the stories of these down-to-earth families found around the outlying districts of Chiang Mai through plain folklores told on wooden porches. These stories, inhabiting various corners as pieces of unique crafts made by local artisans or ‘sala’, are neither too complicated nor too brute. They take form as each sala contributes their creativity and experiences, making them surprising and unexpected. The guesthouse features 4 little cozy houses with 8 rooms where uniquely blended ambience of house and landscape decoration is

hun Kae - Anchalee Sriwipasathit the owner of De Siam Antique – a famous colonial antique furniture shop in Hang Dong district, Chiang Mai - is someone who loves to eat out. She told us that as she and no-one in her family can cook, she’s always looking for new places to eat around town. Her favorite bistros are located throughout the city, but the one she always loves to hangout at is right near her house in Hang Dong. 9 Moo 9 Cafe & Gallery differs from most places as it’s only open Thursdays to Sundays. The ambience and taste of its menu are also different from the norm. Located in a nice garden with renovated wooden rice barns, bare cement buildings and baked clay-tile roofs, 9 Moo 9 is a decor bistro that combines Thai folk ambience with modern and artistic Mediterranean food.

Khun Kae said that she was recommended the bistro by a magazine and found that the owner of this restaurant, Ajarn Siripan Kidd, was also a customer of De Siam. Khun Kae was impressed by the simple but stylish decoration, cozy ambience as well as the dishes.

Khun Kae told us that the menu here changes every day, and Tony will write down the daily dish list on the crossbeam of the rice barn in chalk. Recommended dishes include Griddled Prawn Salad, Pumpkin Soup with Mozzarella Cheese, Spaghetti Ratatouille, and Salmon & Asparagus Quiche. Homemade cakes, desserts and afternoon tea are available as standard. The ambience is very friendly and you can visit quilt works at the gallery at the rear building. A VINTAGE TALK With the Nostalgia -‐ Addicted Photographer

Phumiphat Jiarajetchai and his collection of vintage stuffs at his house

Apart from being the man responsible for many of the pictures printed in Citylife Magazine, photographer Phumiphat Jiarajetchai is an antique collector known for his vintage decoration ideas. He believes that photography is similar to collecting retro items as they both capture a moment that is impressed upon us. “I earn a living from photography, but when collecting antiques I earn my mind,” said him. Phumiphat started collecting when he came Chiang Mai in 2003. One day he was attracted by an

old teak casket for sale at Wua Lai Street, and brought it back home. He felt like the vintage casket had its own untold story that he could touch; after that his house became crowded with antiques. On Sunday afternoons the photographer is always at the Flea Market behind the Prince Royal’s College, well-known as being the biggest outlet for secondhand and retro products in the city. He said that the market is like his inspirational place making him create some new things from the old items.
