espite being a distinguished profession, Thai writers who actually write themselves (as opposed to celebrity writers) are very much in the minority. None of my childhood friends have become writers or magazine editors; instead they are now doctors, engineers, architects, lecturers, businessmen, politicians, monks, taxi drivers, and HYHQ FR\RWH GDQFHUV , KDYH QR ROG IULHQGV ZKR ZRUN LQ WKH ÀHOG RI SXEOLVKLQJ As Thai people don’t enjoy reading as a pastime, writers make a lousy wage. PREPARE TO BE RICH! WITH MONOPOLY

amed after the economic concept of ‘monopoly’, this classic and ever-popular game can be used to explain serious concepts about land and tax. The history of Monopoly starts in 1904, when Elizabeth J. Magie Phillips created a game through which she hoped to be able to explain the single tax theory of Henry George, the author of Progress and Poverty. It was intended to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private monopolies. Elizabeth’s game was called the Landlord’s Game and was published in 1924. Parker brothers developed the Landlord’s Game into the Monopoly board game. The game was very popular during the Great Depression of the 1930s and is remembered for its logo of a senior millionaire in tuxedo. For those who’ve never played, Monopoly is a square board consisting of several areas of land available at different prices, tax-paying areas, bonus areas and more. The corners of the board feature the start, the prison, the free parking area and the bad luck spot on which players have to visit prison (and will not get their salary until they get out). The worst part of this game is getting a bankruptcy card. The most expensive locations of the game in British and American versions are London’s Mayfair and New Jersey’s Atlantic City. There are many different versions of the game and in the Thai edition Patpong, Saphanhan and Yaowaraj are the most popular locations. In 2006, a Here and Now version was produced for cities in U.S. and was decided by online voting. In 2008, Montreal was chosen to be the most expensive area at 4 million dollars while Tokyo a lowly 1 million dollars and New York was in the middle at 2.2 million dollars.

In 2010, Hasbro Company celebrated the 75th anniversary of Monopoly by launching the new version with circle shapes, sound effects, and electronic bank notes. This new version was called Monopoly Revolution.

t may sound an odd combination but the roast pork buffet and cabaret show at Dung Dung Roast Pork Buffet on Superhighway Rd., Chiang Mai, is well appreciated every night. Athena Band performs from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the group of 10 lady boy entertainers and one guy DJ is directed by Charum Chimpong. Charum Chimpong grew up as a boy until he attended vocational college, when his lady mind came to the fore. “My mother knew for a long time that I was homosexual, but asked me to maintain a male appearance until I graduated. Also, I was afraid of my dad, so I never acted myself when I was a teenager. However, some elder transgender men working as make-up artists saw something inside me, and encouraged me to enter Miss Lady Boy contests around Chiang Mai. It was around my last year of college that I dressed as a lady and what’s more, I began to win many beauty contests,” she smiled.

FACTORY GIRLS AND THEIR ENTERTAINMENT ike most big cities, the majority of people in Bangkok aren’t natives. The city is an amalgamation of people from across the country who have come to seek work in the metropolis, with the majority coming from Isan. Traditionally, men work in the heavy industrial factories whilst women work in the fabrics industry. Thai people often call working women ‘Sao Rong Ngan’ (factory girls). Factory workers tend to live and work in the industrial estates around Bangkok and their living conditions is poor (though recently, the government has planned to raise the minimum wage to 300 Baht per day). Some work over 12 hours a day to get overtime, but this extra money comes at a cost to their health, especially those that are in constant contact with chemicals. Taxi driving also seems to be a well paid job, although drivers must barter with their health and state of mind DV WKH\ GHDOLQJ ZLWK XQEHDUDEOH WUDIÀF MDPV RQ D GDLO\ EDVLV Living in a metropolis invariably means living in cramped conditions; from the work rooms to their bedrooms. Hence, their downtime is spent in front of the TV and listening to the radio. Pleng luk tung, or folk songs, are very important for their lives; a form of entertainment that represents their lives well. From the remote and poor regions of Isan to the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, they have to struggle to survive in the big city whilst also dealing with heartache, which is a common theme in these songs. Phai-Pongsathorn is a very famous singer LQ WKLV ÀHOG DQG LV UHQRZQHG IRU WKH VRQJ ‘Khon Baan Diew Kan’ (the same region people) that tells about the friendship of migrated workers in the big city. Siriporn Amphaipong is also the queen of folk songs after Pumpuang Duangchan, both of whom are very popular with factory girls. Television programs are also their favored means of escapism; especially on channel 7 at around 8.30 – 10.30 p.m. every day: the time of dramatic soap operas. The programs support the idealistic lives of worker, with maids falling in love with wealthy men, and laborers achieving little in their lives. Amongst a bitter and cruel life in the metropolis, TV and radio give them a trace of hope and a sense of togetherness.

MEGUMI JAPANESE RESTAURANT n Another Homemade Japanese Taste

hile there are uncountable Japanese restaurants in Chiang Mai, not many places are able to serve the authentic tastes of Tokyo, Kyoto or other areas in Japan. Located on Huay Kaew Road, Megumi Japanese Restaurant is one of the very few. Yoshi and Emi Tokuda never planned to settle in Chiang Mai and had recently opened a Japanese bistro in the U.S. before a friend invited them to visit the north of Thailand. Thanks to their friend the couple fell in love with the city and they are now running a bistro in the building belonging to their friend. Megumi was named after the wife Emi and is regarded as a hidden gem, popular with Japanese expats and those with a preference for native tastes. It’s also the favorite dining place of DJ Mee-Pravit Teeranon, the owner of At Nimman Hotel. )RU WKRVH ZKR DUH IDPLOLDU ZLWK WKH *\R]D served at the many food stalls around town, you will be impressed by its taste here and is UHFRPPHQGHG DV DQ DSSHWL]HU )ROORZ LW ZLWK the delicious Salmon Teriyaki, or the Saba Miso, which goes wonderfully well with sake or beer. The crispy fried pork with the mellow curry and hot rice; Katsu Curry; and the Chicken Bowl, a teriyaki chicken with rice in a big bowl, are other superb main dishes. If you are bored with your permanent Japanese bistro, and want to make a change, check out the very well priced and excellent Megumi.

GOLD CANYON GOLF & RESORT old Canyon Golf & Resort is like a diamond hidden in the mountains of Pa Sang district in Lamphun. Though this golf course is hidden amongst peaceful and remote mountains, it is crowded with golfers every weekend. Established by Methee Wuthichayanan it is now taken care of by Pro Kawin Thammanut, the one and only golf pro who has developed it into one of the best golf courses in Lamphun. We had a chance to play golf at this course with Siwadol Jiragan, the Managing Director of Red Star Notebook and Smartphone Shop. He is a young successful business man from Chiang Mai addicted to golf. Siwadol believes hat Gold Canyon has the perfect fairway with obstacles that challenge golfers which are tricky yet enjoyable. The greens are strong so golf balls run from expected points so golfers here

must therefore adapt their game to play this course well and it helps develop one’s tactics. The layout of this course has both easy and hard zones and is suited to weekend golfers who have similar skills. Siwadol chose the 541 yard par 5, hole 4 as his favorite due to its dogleg on the right, and tricky green where two putting is very easy.
