ANAHEIM COMMUNITY SERVICES NEWS

Spotlight Congratulations to VolunTEENs Daniel Falcon and Jacqueline Tran for each earning over 175 service hours, the most hours served in this summer’s VolunTEEN Program!

Veterans Day Celebration November 11 at the Veteran’s Monument in downtown, adjacent to Muzeo. 241 S. Anaheim Blvd.

Daniel is a student at Canyon High School and has participated in the VolunTEEN Program for the past two summers. He has done everything from helping out at our summer day camps to working with our park maintenance crew. A student at Canyon High School, Jacqueline has participated in the program for the last three years and enjoyed getting to know all of the kids at the Oak Canyon Nature Center Day Camp and Tiny Tots Academy. She has gone above and beyond her volunteer duties, helping out at special events all over Anaheim. We thank Daniel and Jacqueline along with the rest of the VolunTEENs for their hard work!

LIBRARY

year OF THE

The Award

Established in 1992, the Library of the Year is a national award celebrating the one library that most profoundly demonstrates exemplary service to their community by developing creative and innovative programs to meet the specific needs of their patrons, achieves a dramatic increase in library use, and demonstrates leadership in creating programs and services that can be emulated by other libraries. Anaheim Public Library was selected as the Library of the Year based on the Library’s commitment to connecting with underserved communities, providing services to seniors, immigrants, non-English residents, foster youth, and more.

your

The most notable was the Library’s innovative response to safely adapting library services during the pandemic, which ensured that the Anaheim community had access to books, free crafts, and WiFi. Staff were commited to connecting with the community to provide essential library services by hosting programs virtually on social media and on Zoom. You could also find staff demonstrating exemplary service reaching youth, families, and seniors at community centers, schools, and food distribution sites across the city. This past year is one example of the Library’s dedication to serving the Anaheim community! This is Anaheim Public Library’s first time receiving the national award.

Mobile Family Resource Centers Meet Community Needs During Pandemic

This summer, the City of Anaheim, along with support from the Samueli Foundation and Anaheim Community Foundation, served 12 neighborhoods by hosting 40 Pop Up Family Resource Center Events dedicated to meeting the most immediate needs of Anaheim residents affected by the pandemic. The Anaheim Mobile Family Resource Center Project is comprised of City and non-profit agency partners who host booths for professional case managers and outreach coordinators to establish relationships and provide linkages to critical resources, activities, events, services, and emergency assistance programs. Additionally, through a partnership with Chapman University, the City was able to add a vaccination pod as another critical component to the mobile project that made the COVID19 vaccine available to residents at their doorstep. The Anaheim Mobile Family Resource Center project will continue its work in reaching residents directly in neighborhoods hardest hit by COVID19. For more information about our Family Resource Centers in Anaheim please visit one of our three centers, or see page 47.

RECENT PARK

Maxwell Dog Park

IMPROVEMENTS Maxwell Dog Park - The long-awaited Maxwell dog park provides residents, families and, of course, dogs, with an awesome new place to play. The 1-acre dog park, Anaheim's fourth, includes spaces for large and small dogs, agility courses, grassy hills, drinking fountains for people and dogs, bone-shaped benches and ample shade trees. Julianna Park - The completely renovated park invites residents to enjoy a day outside. The 2020 improvements included a multi-use turf area, fitness equipment, half basketball court, gazebo, and shaded picnic areas, complementing the recently installed KaBOOM! playground. Lincoln Park Parking lot improvements - Improvements to Lincoln Park included the installation of a new park monument sign, making the park more visible to Broadway Ave. Also included were additional landscape amenities, an accessible sidewalk and ramp, and additional parking spaces. 42

Cottonwood Park - Our 13th KaBOOM! playground is open for play at Cottonwood Park! For months, representatives from the City of Anaheim, Anaheim Family YMCA, Edwards Lifesciences Foundation and KaBOOM! worked together to design and install a new playground at Cottonwood Park. Kids from the community participated in a virtual Design Day where they came up with ideas for their dream playground. The site also features a Gratitude Wall mosaic, designed and installed by local Orange County artist, Amanda Seibel, which includes individual tiles with drawings from more than 100 Edwards employees and local school children. YMCA - The new Anaheim Family YMCA Community Complex complements the adjacent Ross Park by providing a space that supports different activities, including programmed sports like soccer and futsal, and other recreational activities, allowing for active and passive recreational use. Check out the YMCA website to learn more about programming at this facility. anaheimymca.org.
