Pero no por ello hemos bajado los brazos, o abandonado. Creo que en muchos casos nos hemos afianzado y trabajado en comunidad.

Utilizando las palabras de quienes nos acompañan en esta última edición del año, quiero pensar que nuestra afición es sólida y verdadera y cuando esto termine pronto haya sido un capítulo gris oscuro y todo seguirá más o menos bien.

Mi Gran Pasión Este 2020 se cumplen 12 años desde la maravillosa llegada de estos “gigantes gentiles” a mi vida. Era mucho tiempo que no tenía un perro y en el año 2008 sentí unas fuertes ganas de volver a tener uno. Investigué mucho para ver cuál raza sería apta para vida en departamento y tomando en cuenta que trabajaba desde casa y tendría tiempo para ellos, no lo dudé. Mi primera ejemplar fue Kayla, una perra de crianza nacional y con la cual comencé a encantarme además con el adiestramiento canino, puesto que la tenencia responsable no solo implica cuidados y bienestar para nuestros perros, sino también requiere que éstos reciban adiestramiento para que se conviertan en los perros que uno desea que sean y eso mejora la calidad de vida de ellos y la relación con sus humanos. Con Kayla también descubrí el mundo de las exposiciones caninas… Ella era una linda mascota, pero dio pie para que aprendiera más de la raza y quisiera mejorar lo que había visto en Chile, que hasta ese momento no era muy típico. Fue así que llegó Rocky a mi vida, hijo de padres canadienses y que fue adquirido como mascota también, pero que nos dio una tremenda sorpresa. Recibió los mejores cuidados y floreció hasta transformarse en un tremendo perro de show, ganando su primera raza a los 9 meses de edad y marcando la historia de la raza en Chile. Rocky también fue Mejor de Exposición Joven en la Rural (Argentina), Joven Campeón, Campeón y Gran Campeón Argentino, Chileno, Campeón Uruguayo, Top Ten todas las razas en el ranking del Kennel Club de Chile años 2012-2013, Campeón Internacional de Belleza y Campeón Latinoamericano.

Con Rocky también debuté como handler de mis perros, de una manera un poco forzada e inesperada, pero con un Mejor de Exposición Joven, lo que me motivó a seguir perfeccionándome como handler y a disfrutar 100% de presentar el propio perro en pista. Comencé a estudiar mucho acerca de la raza y me propuse aportar a la misma en Chile: fue así como a lo largo de los años importé perros desde Europa y Norte América, uniendo lo mejor (en mi opinión) de ambos continentes; llegaron Sasha desde Rusia, Kali desde Canadá y Crush desde Letonia. Y así, poco a poco, di comienzo a mi plan de crianza, basándome desde un inicio en tres pilares fundamentales: salud,
temperamento y tipicidad.
Cada uno de mis perros pasa por ecocardiograma y radiografías de codos y caderas (exámenes realizados por especialistas) y sólo los completamente
aptos para cruza tienen lugar en el plan de crianza. Sabemos que la genética puede dar sorpresas y esta práctica no otorga garantía de erradicar ciertas dolencias, pero por lo menos, cumplo estrictamente con mi deber ético de criadora al utilizar únicamente perros sanos y eso me deja muy conforme. Mis perros, tanto los adquiridos como los criados por mí, han obtenido excelentes resultados en las exposiciones del Kennel Club de Chile y en exposiciones internacionales (Brasil, Uruguay, Argentina), así como en exposiciones especializadas de la raza. Un resultado reciente que me enorgullece inmensamente es que Di Montoggio Euro “Euro” fue el mejor bullmastiff joven de Brasil el año pasado, después de una extensiva campaña que lo llevó a competir en todo el país.

My Great Passion This 2020 marks 12 years since the wonderful arrival of these “gentle giants” in my life. It was a long time since I had a dog and in 2008 I felt a strong desire to have one once again. I did a lot of research to see which breed would be suitable for apartment life and taking into account that I worked from home and would have time for them, I did not hesitate. My first specimen was Kayla, a nationally bred bitch and with whom I also began to love dog-training, as responsible ownership not only implies care and well-being for our dogs, but also requires that they receive training so that they become the dogs that you want them to be and that improves their quality of life and their relationship with their humans. With Kayla I also discovered the dog-shows ... She was a cute pet, but it gave me the opportunity to learn more about the breed and want to improve what I had seen in Chile, which until then was not very typical. That is how Rocky came into my life, the son of Canadian parents and was also acquired as a pet, but he gave us a tremendous surprise. He received the best care and flourished until he became a tremendous show dog, winning his first Breed at 9 months of age and marking the history of the breed in Chile. Rocky was also Best in Show Young category at Rural (Argentina), Young Champion, Champion and Grand Argentine Champion, Chilean, Uruguayan Champion, Top Ten all Breeds in the ranking of the Kennel Club of Chile years 2012-2013, International Beauty Champion and Latin American Champion.
With Rocky I also made my first appearance as a handler for my dogs, in a somewhat forced and unexpected way, but with a Best in Show - Young, which motivated me to continue improving myself as a handler and to enjoy 100% presenting my own dog in the ring. I began to study a lot about the breed and I decided to contribute to it in Chile: this is how over the years I imported dogs from Europe and North America, bringing together the best (in my opinion) from both continents; Sasha came from Russia, Kali from Canada and Crush from Latvia. And so, little by little, I started my breeding plan, basing myself from the beginning on three fundamental pillars: health,
temperament and typicality.
Each of my dogs undergoes an echocardiogram and x-rays of the elbows and hips (examinations carried out by specialists) and only those completely suitable for crossbreeding take place in the breeding plan. We know that genetics can give surprises and this practice does not guarantee to eradicate certain ailments, but at least, I strictly comply with my ethical duty as a breeder by using only healthy dogs and that leaves me very satisfied. My dogs, both, those acquired and those bred by me, have obtained excellent results at the Kennel Club Chile dog shows and international shows (Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina), as well as in specialized breed shows. A recent result that makes me immensely proud is that Di Montoggio Euro “Euro” was the Best Young Bullmastiff in Brazil last year, after an extensive campaign that saw him compete across the country. The Di Montoggio are leading the breed in Chile since 2012, in different categories and have also managed to stand out in the Top Ten of all breeds in this country, as in the case of Crush (Mambo’s father who appears on this cover), who closed 2018 as the Best Young of All Breeds and second in the same ranking Adult category: definitely making a difference and taking the breed to the top of the podium.

Los Di Montoggio figuran liderando la raza en Chile desde el año 2012,
en distintas categorías y además han logrado destacarse en el Top Ten de todas la razas de este país, como en el caso de Crush (el padre de Mambo que aparece en esta portada), que cerró el año 2018 como mejor ejemplar Joven de Todas las Razas y segundo en el mismo ranking categoría Adulto: definitivamente marcando la diferencia y llevando la raza a lo más alto del podio. Cabe mencionar también que Crush ha sido el ganador de 3 exposiciones especializadas de la raza realizadas en Chile. Es un perro muy especial y me ha dado muchas satisfacciones: lo elegí vía remota a los 45 días de vida en una camada de 7 ejemplares. Algo me decía que ese perro iba a tener un futuro brillante y tenía que llegar a mí. Definitivamente, no me arrepiento. Llegó a los 3,5 meses de edad y de inmediato trabajé en él socialización temprana y adecuada, basada en refuerzos positivos, inhibición de mordida, obediencia, etc… Lo expuse a todo tipo de estímulos, desde el ruido ensordecedor de una planta procesadora minera, hasta llevarlo a la oficina. Básicamente fue mi sombra. Estas acciones son de vital importancia durante los primeros meses de vida del animal. Debutó a los 5 meses en su primera exposición internacional en Argentina, con excelentes resultados. A los 9 meses presentó un desarrollo explosivo que lo llevó a ganar Razas, Grupos y Mejor de Exposición sin parar. Crush ha marcado momentos tan especiales con su excelente estructura, movimiento y energía inagotable, que en el año 2018 nos regaló en la misma exposición los tres Mejor de Exposición categoría joven y adulta, con jueces que provenían de países tan diversos como Brasil , Sudáfrica y Tailandia. Estos y muchos otros logros los obtuvo guiado por el handler chileno Fernando

Burgos, con quien he compartido la presentación de mis perros hace años ya y que es parte fundamental del equipo Di Montoggio y quien maneja a Mambo también.
Habrán notado que escribo acerca de mis perros llamándolos con su “nombre de casa”… para mí son principalmente mis compañeros, mis guardianes y miembros de mi familia. No concibo la vida sin ellos y me preocupo de adiestrarlos desde una muy temprana edad. Vamos juntos a todas partes: centros comerciales, paseos, son muy requeridos también para realizar comerciales televisivos, se llevan bien con otros animales, en pocas palabras, son unos verdaderos “buenos ciudadanos”. El manejo que llevo a cabo con los cachorros de mis camadas también es muy importante: se crían dentro de casa, interactúan con todos los ejemplares
adultos, reciben estimulación neurológica temprana, escuchan música y pistas especiales con ruidos de la calle, se desarrollan en un ambiente enriquecido. He comprobado que esto funciona realmente y terminan siendo perros mucho más aptos para salir al mundo con cierta preparación temprana. Los más agradecidos son los nuevos tutores (dueños) que desean replicar lo que pueden apreciar aquí en casa cuando los invito a conocer mis perros antes de que adquieran un cachorro.
Mi pasión por la raza se plasma en querer criar para mejorar la raza y para compartir con otras personas la felicidad que mis perros me han brindado.

I cannot conceive my life without them and I take care to train them from a very early age. We go everywhere together: shopping malls, walks, they are also being demanded to make television commercials, they get along well with other animals, in short, they are true “good citizens”. The management that I carry out with the puppies of my litters is also very important: they are raised indoors, interact with all the adult specimens, receive early neurological stimulation, listen to music and special tracks with street noises, and develop in an enriched environment. I’ve found this really works and they end up being much more apt to go out into the world with some early preparation. The most grateful are the new guardians (owners) who want to replicate what they can appreciate here at home when I invite them to meet my dogs before they acquire a puppy.
It is also worth mentioning that Crush has been the winner of 3 breed’s specialized shows held in Chile. He is a very special dog and he has given me a lot of satisfaction: I chose him remotely at 45 days of age in a litter of 7 dogs. Something told me that this dog was going to have a bright future and it had to come to me. I definitely don’t regret it. He reached me at 3.5 months of age and I immediately worked on him early and adequate socialization, based on positive reinforcement, bite inhibition, obedience, etc ... I exposed him to all kinds of stimuli, from the deafening noise of a mining processing plant, until taking him to the office. He was basically my shadow. These actions are of vital importance during the first months of the animal’s life. He made his debut at 5 months in his first international dog show in Argentina, with excellent results. At 9 months he presented an explosive development that led him
to win Breeds, Groups and Best in Show without stopping. Crush has marked such special moments with its excellent structure, movement and inexhaustible energy, that in 2018 he gave us at the same show the three Best in Show in the Youth and Adult category, with judges who came from countries as diverse as Brazil, South Africa and Thailand. He obtained these and many other achievements guided by the Chilean handler Fernando Burgos, with whom I have shared the presentation of my dogs for years now and who is a fundamental part of the Di Montoggio team and who also manages Mambo.
You may have noticed that I write about my dogs calling them by their “house name”… for me they are mainly my companions, my guardians and members of my family.
My passion for the breed is manifested in breeding to improve the breed and to share with other people the happiness that my dogs have brought me. The new guardians of my puppies, in a large percentage of cases, have become great friends and members of the Di Montoggio family. I have trained and presented many of their specimens, I maintain constant communication with them and advise them at each stage of the dog’s life. The Di Montoggio puppies leave my house, but an invisible thread connects us until the day they leave this land. And speaking of clients / friends, how not to mention doctor José Barriga, Mambo’s tutor, whom I affectionately call “doc”. He has proven to be an excellent person and a true lover of dogs and also has a great passion for breeding and dog shows. With him we have plans for the future, so that together we can materialize our dreams and ideals of improving the breed and continue participating in the shows and the

Ha demostrado ser una excelente persona y un verdadero amante de los perros y también siente una gran pasión por la crianza y las exposiciones caninas. Con él tenemos planes para el futuro, para que juntos podamos concretar nuestros sueños e ideales de mejorar la raza y seguir participando de las expo y de la camaradería y buenos momentos que en ellas disfrutamos. definitivamente es parte de ellos, obviamente trabajando la estructura, la salud y el temperamento en beneficio de la raza para seguir marcando hitos, con él y con su descendencia, así como sucede con Mambo, que plasma en un maravilloso ejemplar mi trabajo de años y seguramente seguirá el camino de su padre. Y para este futuro, qué mejor que guardar semen congelado de mis machos. Mambo: Alegría y Energía Enero de este año 2020 permanecerá en mi memoria y en la de mi esposa Carolina, como un mes maravilloso, por ser el mes en el que nació nuestra amada hija Martina y porque además vivimos una gran alegría al ver como nuestro cachorro de raza Bullmastiff nos regaló una soñada presentación siendo el Mejor de Exposición en tres pistas y un segundo lugar, recibiendo elogios de jueces de gran trayectoria. Llegar a este gran ejemplar llamado Di Montoggio Gunner, Mambo para nosotros en casa, no fue producto del azar. Dediqué un largo periodo de búsqueda, con mucha paciencia y muchas visitas a exposiciones, buscando criadores que me pudieran guiar a ese perro por que todos aquellos que gustamos de esta afición soñamos tener. Esta búsqueda terminó cuando conocí a Bárbara Trucco, criadora muy seria y responsable, que cría basándose en tres pilares fundamentales: salud, temperamento y tipicidad. Bárbara recibe en sus manos los cachorros y los cuida personalmente y ofrece asesoría y seguimiento constante a los nuevos tutores de sus cachorros. Está constantemente preocupada por guiarnos en la crianza de nuestro perro, para que pueda desarrollar su máximo potencial genético, pero también para que sea un gran compañero de vida. Mambo: Joy & Energy January of this year 2020 will remain in the memory of my wife and mine, as a wonderful month, because it is the month in which our beloved daughter Martina was born and because we also experience great joy when we witnessed our Bullmastiff puppy giving away a dreamy presentation being the Best in Show on three rings and achieving a second place, receiving praise from highly experienced judges. Di Montoggio Gunner, Mambo for us at home, was not a random choice. I spent a long period searching, with a lot of patience and many visits to exhibitions, looking for breeders who could guide me to that dog whom all of us, who like this hobby, dream of having. This search ended when I met Bárbara Trucco, a very serious and responsible breeder, who breeds based on three fundamental pillars: health, temperament and typicality. Barbara receives the puppies in her hands and takes care of them personally and offers constant advice and follow-up to the new guardians of her puppies. She is constantly concerned with guiding us in the upbringing of our dog, so that it can develop its maximum genetic potential, but also so that it is a great life companion. She is also a dog trainer and forges a temperament that is foolproof in her dogs. Mambo is the son of a great Multi BISS, Multi BIS, Multi Jr. BIS, JCh dog. Chi. JCh. Arg. Bullstock’s Summer Solstice “Kali”. Espero pueda llegar a desempeñarse en pistas de la misma forma que sus padres. Los Bullmastiff son perros maravillosos y Mambo, en particular, es un perro alegre, lleno de energía, cariñoso, sociable con otras personas y perros, y que disfruta mucho de nuestros paseos diarios y viajes a la playa. Además es un buen guardián. El complemento perfecto entre protección y compañía. Mi experiencia en la cinofilia se remonta a mi juventud, donde pude iniciar esta actividad con unas perras de raza Fila Brasilero y Rottweiler, y también con un Basenji. A todos pude dedicarles tiempo y cuidados para que pudieran participar en las exposiciones y pude, sobre la marcha, ir aprendiendo sobre el manejo de perros de raza tanto dentro como fuera de pistas. Por mis estudios tuve que hacer una pausa a esta actividad, pero siempre atento a poder asistir a las exposiciones. Después
de varios años y ahora que Mambo forma parte de nuestra familia, no dudaría en recomendar un Bullmastiff. A pesar de su gran fuerza y tamaño, son totalmente recomendables para una familia con niños.
Soy un aficionado de los perros y espero pueda continuar desarrollándome en esta actividad dentro de un margen de sana competencia, compartiendo en las exposiciones con mi familia y ampliando mi círculo de amistades que compartan esta afición. Uno de mis sueños es poder compartir esta pasión con mi hija Martina cuando crezca. Por lo que puedo observar, ama a Mambo y le gusta verlo jugar; parece que será una excelente handler. affectionate, sociable with other people and dogs, and one who enjoys our daily walks and trips to the beach very much. It is also a good guardian. The perfect complement between protection and company. My experience in the dog fancy dates back to my youth, where I was able to start this activity with some female Fila Brasilero and Rottweiler dogs, and also with a Basenji. I dedicated time and care to all of them so that they could participate at the shows and I did, as I went along, I learned about the handling of purebred dogs both on and off the rings. Due to my studies I had to take a break from this activity, but always keen being able to attend the exhibitions. After several years and now that Mambo is part of our family, I would have no hesitation in recommending a Bullmastiff. Despite their great strength and size, they are totally recommended for a family with children. I am a fan of dogs and I hope I can continue to develop this activity within a margin of healthy competition, sharing it with my family and expanding my circle of friends who partake in this hobby. One of my dreams is to be able to experience this passion with my daughter Martina when she grows up. From what I can see, she loves Mambo and she likes to watch him play; it seems that she will be an excellent handler.

Desde la Perspectiva de un Juez Soy juez internacional de FCI para los siguientes grupos: 2, 3, 5, 8 y 9. Pero me dirigiría a mí mismo como un especialista en Terriers. Hasta ahora, he juzgado en España, Polonia, Alemania, Austria, Francia, Rusia, Croacia, Serbia, Eslovenia, Eslovaquia, Ucrania, Chipre, Letonia, Irlanda, Hungría, México, Estados Unidos, Australia y Reunión. También soy juez aprobado por AKC para Conformación. Mi primera experiencia como juez en los EE. UU. fue en 2016, y desde entonces he tenido la oportunidad de juzgar allí. En 2017, tuve el gran honor juzgar Devon Dog Show, uno de los espectáculos del prestigioso fin de semana del condado de Montgomery. Juzgar en todos estos países me ha dado la oportunidad de experimentar los diferentes sistemas cinológicos, incluida la diversidad de reglas que se siguen al adquirir campeonatos nacionales. En mi papel de juez, y a veces como organizador de exposiciones, he experimentado no solo las diferencias en los sistemas, sino también cuánto varía en la forma en que se organizan los espectáculos, la actitud del organizador hacia el juez y también la actitud de los expositores hacia el juez. From a Judge’s Perspective I am an international FCI judge for the following groups: 2, 3, 5, 8, and 9. But I would address myself as a terrier specialist. So far, I have judged in Spain, Poland, Germany, Austria, France, Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Ukraine, Cyprus, Latvia, Ireland, Hungary, Mexico, USA, Australia, and Réunion. I am also an approved AKC judge for Conformation. My first judging experience in the US was in 2016, and since then I have had a few judging assignments there. In 2017, it was a big honour to judge Devon, one of the shows of the prestigious Montgomery County weekend. Judging in all these countries has given me the opportunity to experience the different cynological systems including the diversity of rules followed when acquiring national championships. In my role as judge, and sometimes as exhibition organizer, I have experienced not only the differences in systems, but also how much it varies in the way shows are organized, the attitude of the organizer towards the judge, and also the attitude of the exhibitor towards the judge.

Before you enter an AKC ring as a foreign judge, you must read the Rules, Policies and Guidelines for Conformation Dog Show Judges and of course the AKC breed standards that are on many points quite different from the FCI standards. To give a couple of examples, bites in many terriers can be level or scissor in AKC but can only be scissor in FCI. German Pinscher AKC standard calls for hackney movement while FCI standard calls for fluent movement with strong drive and free front extension. There are similarities between AKC and FCI when talking about excusals and disqualifications in the ring. But if you don’t excuse or disqualify a dog, he/she stays in the ring till the time of placements. In AKC, you don’t give marks like in FCI, so you need to give the ribbon to the dog that is placed
even if you don’t think he/she is worth the ribbon. This happens when you have just one or few specimens of the breed. I had an incident one time in the USA because I didn’t want to give the ribbon to one of the dogs I placed. At AKC shows, the judge does most of the job of what a ring steward would do at an FCI show. The judge needs to follow his own decisions well and write them down in the judge book. It’s on the judge if there is a mistake. During my first judging experience in the US I found writing in the judge book very annoying. Thank God I had the most helpful ring steward that guided me through all the paperwork. There are similarities and differences between the titles in AKC and FCI. First, one of the big differences between AKC and FCI systems are critiques. In some FCI countries the judge is required to write

my first time being observed. The Rep lady was Mrs. Mary Dukes. She was sitting at the ring side and was carefully monitoring my judging. At the end I got the following rating: “He knows what he is doing in the ring, he chose a different way of selecting the dogs, but he did find the right ones. Funny to watch.” Handlers in AKC are organized under a registered handlers program. It’s not easy to become an AKC registered handler and it takes a lot of work, commitment, and responsibility to stay part of the program. Handlers play a very big role in the AKC. They are not just the people that take a client dog in the ring. They train, condition, groom, take care of the health of the dogs, they pick shows, make decisions about the campaigns, etc. They usually decide with the owner/breeder about the whole future of the dog. Many times they are involved in the breeding programs of their clients. It is not rare that they whelp and raise litters for them and decide together who is the next star in the litter. Handlers run registered businesses and pay taxes from their earnings. I was fascinated by the professionalism of the US handlers. They were always polite, dressing appropriately, and displaying good sportsmanship. It happened just at one occasion that I was told by a couple of handlers that their dog was the number one dog in the country at the time they were showing under me. FCI has not established yet a similar program for people that address themselves as handlers showing for clients at FCI shows. It’s hard to generalize the handlers in FCI countries. Some of them are at the same level as the AKC registered ones having their own business, doing a great job, and taking good care of the dogs. Some are not that professional, but it is hard to generalize and make statements because we don’t have FCI involved with a program. AKC shows are organized to perfection!

Everything is detailed. I attended a few AKC shows as a judge and as a visitor. At every occasion I noticed that the show team worked hard so that the show ran as smoothly as possible, and I must mention the dogs were always groomed and trained to perfection.

When my dear friend Bob Busby invited me to judge at his show cluster, he really took great care of me. He arranged my trip, transfers and my stay in North Carolina. He took me around for a fantastic tourist experience. On other occasions though, I noticed that the system towards judges in the US differs from that of FCI shows. The judge is left to do his own trip organization. As a judge, you need to get your tickets, arrange the transfer or rental car, deposit for the hotel etc. It’s also your responsibility to show up at the show grounds half an hour prior to judging. At the end of the show, you are paid all your costs and for your work in the ring.I treasure a lot of wonderful memories of my trips around the world. I think it would be unfair towards all great hosts that invited me if I mention just some of them. What also makes trips to other countries priceless is the opportunity to meet other judges and share knowledge and opinions with them. Hopefully I will soon be collecting new memories. The Mighty Bullmastiff When the breed became famous, many owners chose these dogs as guardians, but preferred the lighter colored puppies, especially those with the dark stain in the eye area, a mark of their ancestral Mastiff. Breeders preferred to seek a pure lineage to continue the crosses between mastiff and bulldog. They set out to find the ideal animal that would be 60 percent mastiffs and 40 percent bulldogs. In 1924 the breed was considered pure and was recognized by the English Kennel Club. Recognition by the AKC was in 1933 and by the FCI in 1955.
The historical record of the Bullmastiff breed dates back to the 19th century, when illegal hunting on large estates became such a problem that the lives of guard dogs were at risk. It was necessary to have a strong and courageous dog that could wait, in silence, for the invader’s approach, attack from a command and surrender the invader without hurting him. The mastiff was not fast enough and the bulldog was not that big, so the two breeds were crossed to “create” the perfect dog, which was called a “gamekeeper’s night dog”. The preferred color was brindle because it could be better camouflaged at night.
The Bullmastiff breed is gentle and calm, a faithful companion and a guard dog. It is not easily provoked, but if threatened it is courageous. It is stubborn and it is not easy to motivate to do something against its will. Generally interacts well with other dogs and other animals in the house. It also has no problem dealing with children. The Bullmastiff is a large dog that needs to be exercised every day to keep fit. But their needs are moderate; it is happy with some guided walks. It does not feel good in hot weather and is not a dog to live outside the house. Inside the house it needs a comfortable bed and plenty of room to stretch out.

of the breed is the square shape of the head, that is why it is important to have small ears, which makes that happen. The eyes have to be dark, of medium size and well separated. The muzzle should be short and deep, with a wide jaw, the bite should be pincer or with a small undershot. The mask must be dark. My preference is to see the mask covering the muzzle and the eyes, the darker the better. With all these things in mind, as you approach each specimen, it should show strength and power, giving the appearance of a docile dog, but having confidence in its behavior. 4. A Bullmastiff should have a slight bow of the neck, of moderate length, highlighting its beautiful head. The neck should be muscular and almost equal to the circumference of the head. The top line must be straight. Muscular thighs, denoting strength. The body must present a good arch of the ribs, the chest wide and deep, implanted between the front legs. The tail should be strong at the root, broad, extending from the base of the spine and tapering to the hocks; it can be held down or curved, but never like a hunting dog. 5. The shoulders should be muscular, but not overloaded and slightly sloping - the front legs are straight, with good bone and well separated (accommodating that beautiful chest). Elbows should not be turned in or out, pasterns straight, feet of medium size with round, well arched toes. Nails should preferably be black. 6. Returning to a muscular dog, the hindquarters should have well developed thighs that denote strength, but not exaggerated (remember that the dog was created to cover short distances very quickly and, for this a powerful hindquarters is essential). It should have moderate angulation (again necessary for powerful movements). Obviously cow hocks and splay
feet are not desirable and does not match the need for a powerful rear. 7. Hair should be short and dense. We have three colors: red, fawn and brindle. When judging, please don’t ignore the brindle. I remember this was the original color of the breed (you cannot see a brindle in dark places). A small white spot is allowed on the chest (the smaller the better). 8. The movements of a Bullmastiff denote strength, freedom and smoothness, with good reach and propulsion (remember the muscular hindquarters and well-developed fronts). The top line must be level according to the movement of the dog around the ring. It should move in a straight line, with its feet converging under the body. 9. A Bullmastiff must have a good temperament, otherwise he is not a Bullmastiff in my opinion. They were trained by their owners to do a specific job at a certain time. The rest of the time was
dedicated to the owner’s family, which included children of all ages. That was the dog’s “family” and that he would die to protect them. That characteristic remains to this day and is what makes it a good family companion. 10. Now you have the tools available to judge the Bullmastiff. See how the specimens enter the ring. There will be one or two that will catch your eye. Observe them walking around the ring (they generally walk a little slower when jogging as a group), make a mental note of those with great reach and strength that move effortlessly around the circuit, to follow when they are lined up for the exam. Take time to look for the dogs in the line that exemplify the standard. I hope that you have found the dog, which in your opinion follows the ideal characteristics of the breed. Un Bullmastiff debe tener un buen temperamento, sino según mi opinión, no es un Bullmastiff. Ellos fueron entrenados por sus dueños para hacer un trabajo específico en un determinado momento. Experiencia, Mitos y Verdades Nací hace cincuenta y tantos años en un pequeño pueblo de Sevilla y desde muy pequeño mi gran pasión son los animales. Empecé teniendo hormigas en cajas de cerillas y les echaba migas de pan y así hasta hoy, mi vida gira en torno a los animales y muy particularmente a los perros.

Llevo unos 25 años aproximadamente juzgando perros de show, es una actividad que me gusta mucho, disfruto con ello. Soy criador, expositor, y siendo esta una actividad más relacionada con los perros de pura raza, también soy juez.
Para mí la subjetividad empieza donde la objetividad concluye su tarea.
Para mí, juzgar perros es una tarea en la cual se necesitan conocimientos, mucha afición, responsabilidad, honestidad, y un mínimo de ciertas aptitudes naturales (buen ojo, determinación, capacidad de docencia, capacidad de concentración….), partiendo de tener un mínimo de cualidades, un juez tiene que ser un gran aficionado al perro de raza, y es muy importante el haber limpiado al menos entre 5000 y 10.000 kilogramos de caca de perro (dependiendo del tamaño de las razas que hayas tenido). Es decir, haber tenido perros de raza, haber criado, haber sido expositor, saber lo que es un entrenamiento, conocer el arreglo de las diferentes razas, conocer los problemas específicos de las distintas razas, las dificultades que conlleva un Mastín Napolitano, o un Chihuahua, el trabajo de tener en perfecto estado un Shitzu, etc, etc. Una vez que se tengan estos cimientos hay que estudiar, investigar, hablar con quien te pueda enseñar, conferencias, seminarios, cursos y poco a poco irse forjando como un buen Juez de perros, que tenga siempre el objetivo prioritario de poner un grano de

La primera vez que juzgué fue hace muchos años en un pequeño concurso junto a un río en un pueblo de León, Veguellina de Orbigo, una semana sin dormir antes y otra después repasando lo que hice.
A veces después de hacer la selección, piensas en que no podía haber sido de otra forma, estaba clarísimo, no había color. Otras veces te da rabia que esos dos o tres ejemplares se hayan tenido que enfrentar
entre ellos, ciertos matices han hecho que uno gane, otro día el resultado entre ellos puede ser diferente.
Si los juicios premian los mejores ejemplares, pues los jueces contribuyen a que las razas mejoren. Los juicios tienen una repercusión muy importante en la mejora de las razas. Generalizando, criamos y exponemos con el objetivo de obtener buenos resultados en las exposiciones de belleza, es evidente, los jueces son quienes otorgamos esos buenos resultados, o no. Experience, Myths and Truths of certain natural aptitudes (good eye, determination, teaching capacity, concentration capacity ...), starting from having a minimum of qualities, a judge has to be a great fan of purebred dogs, and it is very important to have cleaned at least between 5,000 and 10,000 kilograms of dog poop (depending on the size of the breeds you have had). That is, to have had purebred dogs, to have bred, to have been an exhibitor, to know what training is, the arrangement of different breeds, the specific problems of different breeds, the difficulties that a Neapolitan Mastiff entails or a Chihuahua, the job of having a Shitzu in perfect condition, etc, etc.
I was born fifty-odd years ago in a small town in Seville and from a very young age my great passion is animals. I started by having ants in matchboxes and I would throw bread crumbs on them and so to this day, my life revolves around animals and very particularly dogs. I have been judging show dogs for about 25 years, it is an activity that I really enjoy. I am a breeder, exhibitor, and being this another related activity to purebred dogs, I am also a judge. Once these foundations are in place, one has to study, research, talk with whoever can teach you, conferences, seminars, courses and little by little one will be forging oneself as a good Judge of dogs, always focusing on adding a grain of sand in the positive evolution of purebred dogs. The first time I judged was many years ago in a small contest next to a river in a town named Veguellina de Orbigo, in LeĂłn, a week without sleeping before and another after reviewing what I did.
For me, subjectivity begins where objectivity ends its task. Sometimes, after making the selection, you think that it could not have been otherwise, it was very clear, there was no color. Other times it makes you angry that those two or three specimens have had to face each other, certain nuances have made one win, another day the result between them may be different.
If the judgments reward the best specimens, then the judges help the breeds to improve. The trials have a very important impact on the breeds’ improvement. Generalizing, breeding and exhibiting with the aim of obtaining good results in beauty exhibitions, it is evident, the judges are the ones who grant those good results, or not. I have judged in America, Europe and Asia. Everywhere I have felt very comfortable, if I presume otherwise, I will not go. Perhaps those from outside of Spain are more pleasant because I am less known. When I was in Chile, I felt wonderful, I would return with my eyes closed. I would highlight the great differences between European, where I judge the most, and Asian dog shows, the tremendous organization and cleanliness that there

En todos lados me he sentido muy cómodo, si presumo lo contrario, no voy. Quizás los de fuera de España son más agradables porque soy menos conocido. Cuando estuve en Chile, me sentí de maravilla, volvería con los ojos cerrados. Destacaría como grandes diferencias entre Europa, (dónde más juzgo) y Asia, la tremenda organización y limpieza que hay en las expos asiáticas. Y con respecto a América, lo más destacables es el nivel de las presentaciones en el ring, los manejadores. Veo a la cinofilia latinoamericana totalmente emergente, en evolución constante y equiparable en la mayoría de los aspectos a las más desarrolladas del mundo. Un expositor, que ha invertido esfuerzo y tiempo, puede quedar relegado a los puestos del olvido, y no siendo responsabilidad del juez tal situación, puede afectar la autoestima del criador/ expositor; esto es totalmente real, y triste a la vez. Pero yo no conozco ningún seguimiento para motivar. Solamente el trato respetuoso, educado, equitativo y el posible ánimo están de la mano del juez. Todos entran con la misma ilusión al ring, pero evaluar la ilusión es muy difícil. Pero para los jueces que empezamos de 0, que hemos barrido mucha caca (otra vez), que se nos han ido a la mierda tantas ilusiones/sueños, que hemos trabajado tanto para conseguir lo poco que somos, que hemos estado más veces frente al juez que frente al expositor, es algo más fácil. Mitos y verdades, ufff vaya tela ….. A nivel muy personal,

But I don’t know of any follow-up to motivate. Only the respectful, polite, equitable treatment and the possible encouragement are in the hand of the judge. Perseverancia, Motivación y Pasión Soy criador de malteses, caniches y yorkshire terriers de Luxemburgo. Empecé a criar durante los 80 con los nombres de Kennel “des Supers Supers” y “My Supers”. He producido muchos campeones mundiales, europeos, internacionales y nacionales (más de 200 títulos). Muchos de mis perros fueron ganadores Multi Best in Show y Best of Group en exposiciones CACIB, así como en eventos más importantes, como exposiciones caninas europeas y mundiales. Mis perros han sido Top Winning Toy Dogs durante 5 años seguidos y 3 años consecutivos Top Winning de todas las razas. He sido una criadora de primer nivel durante 3 años. Repetí esos resultados en 2004 y 2008. Me permitió representar a Luxemburgo en el Eukanuba World Challenge en Long Beach, CA.También he dirigido mi propio negocio como groomer durante 35 años y todavía estoy activo en exhibiciones, ahora con Pomeranians. Para juzgar, a corto plazo, me preparo leyendo el estándar de la raza antes de cada evento, para “refrescar” mi mente; eso es lo mínimo que uno puede hacer como juez. A largo plazo, cada vez que tengo la oportunidad, siempre es interesante hablar con diferentes criadores de diferentes razas y con algunos colegas jueces. El diálogo y el intercambio de ideas aumentan mi conocimiento y la percepción del perro o de una raza. Como juez, debo respetar muy estrictamente el estándar de acuerdo con lo que se solicita y no tener miedo

Perseverance, Motivation and Passion I’m a Maltese, Poodle and Yorkshire Terrier breeder from Luxembourg. I started to breed during the 80’s with Kennel names “des Supers Supers” and “My Supers”. I have produced many World, European, International and National Champion (over 200 titles). Many of my dogs were Multi Best in Show and Best of Group Winners in CACIB shows as well as in bigger events, like European and World Dog Shows. My dogs have been Top Winning Toy Dogs for 5 years in a row and 3 years in row Top Winning of All breeds. I’ve been a top breeder for 3 years. I repeated those results in 2004 and 2008. It allowed me to represent Luxembourg at the Eukanuba World Challenge in Long Beach, CA.

Judging is an art and I also think that it is a combination of knowledge and experience. A good sense of proportions, eye for the balance, etc. There is not really a way to learn artistic sensibility, people do have it, or not. Judging is more about understanding standards than personal opinion. In the short term, I prepare myself to judge, reading the breed standard before each judgment to “refresh” my mind; that is the minimum one can do as a judge.

I have also been running my own business as a groomer for 35 years and I am still active in showing, now with Pomeranians. I started my career as a judge in 2003. It was an obvious and logical continuity from breeding and a nice way to share ideas with breeders around the world, as it gives me an opportunity to evaluate quality and evolution of my own breed and it gives me another perspective than to be a breeder. Most of what I have learned as a breeder was by trial and error. Of course, there were several breeders from all over the world that I admire. I would say that I had the opportunity to meet some very interesting persons with lots of knowledge from everywhere, that helped me to improve during my life with their advice, stories, trayectory, etc. I started to breed Maltese with some great English bloodlines from famous kennels like Snowgoose, Caramalta and Mansow. Por lo contrario, un juicio “equivocado” según el estándar siempre puede afectar el futuro de la raza, más o menos, seriamente, incluso empeorar cuando esos juicios se repiten con frecuencia. En el ring, siempre trato de ser lo más justo con la cantidad de cualidades solicitadas por el estándar de la raza y siempre tomo mi decisión sobre el punto principal de esa raza. Algunas son más “razas faciales”, para otras el movimiento es el punto principal o una buena y según eso, una bonita estructura. Algunas personas pueden tardar algunos años en poder ganar una vez un BOB, sin embargo, no veo ningún aspecto negativo en aquellos competidores que no ganan el podio en el ring principal. Creo que alcanzar este nivel ya es un resultado muy alto del que todo criador/ propietario debería estar orgulloso. La

Some breeds are more “face breeds”, for some others the movement is the main point and according to that, nice construction. It might take some years for some people to be able to win once a BOB, however I don’t see any negative aspect to those competitors that don’t win the podium on the main ring. I think reaching this level is already a very high result that each breeder/owner should be proud of.
Perseverance and a positive mind is the only way to grow. My first judgment was of course a very impressive day for me. It was in my own country with a record entry. Many Maltese breeders from all over Europe, and overseas had come. I knew nearly all of them, as for several years, I had been competing along with them inside the rings. It was the moment for me to show what were the main characteristics of the breed according to my own lecture of the standard. It was the moment I could make my voice be heard. I have had the opportunity to judge in most countries of Europe. And I was an exhibitor in Europe and United States. I feel comfortable in any country where I can feel passion for dogs. Anywhere I could feel motivation and enthusiasm for our passion. Any place where there is an interest for pedigree dogs and where people are dedicated to their dogs. Anywhere we can have a nice swap of ideas.
