Presentamos a Jimena Paz de Octubre Rojo Borzois de Argentina, realizando pasos firmes en el desarrollo de la raza en el país con gran repercusión a nivel internacional; también contamos con las palabras de Cherie Hunchak, Marina Cornaglia, Vendula Svobodova, Luis Alberto Martín Leudo y Daniel Foran.

In our edition #12 the Borzoi is the star! We present Jimena Paz from Octubre Rojo Borzois Kennel from Argentina, taking firm steps in the development of the breed in the country with great repercussion in the world; We also have the words of Cherie Hunchak, Marina Cornaglia, Vendula Svobodova, Luis Alberto Martín Leudo and Daniel Foran.

Todos ellos comparten el mismo Norte, donde enfatizan en criar para mejorar la raza, darle tiempo y disfrutar el crecimiento de los ejemplares, compartir el conocimiento en todas las direcciones, generando un círculo virtuoso, involucrarse para que los perros tengan futuro, y asumir la “carga” de ser mentores de las nuevas generaciones.

Octubre Rojo Borzois ...Cuando La´Ma el dragón fue a ver a la Madre del universo después de la creación le dijo: “Madre, deseo ser un perro pero con cualidades divinas diferente a todos.” La Madre compadecida de verlo tan solo, pues únicamente quedaban dos dragones de época antigua, le dijo: “Está bien viejo y amigo dragón, que deseas?” La´Ma el dragón le dijo: “Deseo la velocidad de las gacelas de ojos claros, La mirada de las águilas blancas que surcan los cielos, El olor de las palomas, El silencio de la niebla de las estepas rusas, Sonreír como los niños, La lealtad de los Ángeles y el amor de los perros.” Madre le dijo “sea” y dos maravillosos Borzoi surgieron de su manto, cayeron en las estepas de Rusia y desde entonces vagan por allí… Extracto de un viejo cuento ruso Comencé esta aventura adquiriendo mi primer Borzoi en un criadero local, sin jamás haber leído el estándar ni conocer mucho sobre la raza, solo los vi en una película “Leyenda de pasión”, así es que todo fue una hermosa sorpresa. Como creo que a varios de nosotros nos pasó, aquella hermosa hembra blanca y naranja llamada Isabella distaba bastante del tipo de borzoi del que hoy gusto y crío; pero fue ella la primera, la más hermosa y la que me enseñó todo, con sus virtudes y sus defectos, esto fue por el 2005. A medida que comencé a bucear por este maravilloso mundo de los lebreles, tan

misteriosos, tan únicos, comprendí que son seres superiores, iluminados y más … Aquella hermosa flaca me hizo cambiar todas las marcas de alimento balanceado y cocinar hasta los platos más insólitos, visitar varios veterinarios hasta que al pasar los 2 años decidió comenzar a comer. Hace muchísimos años que trabajo con perros y a pesar de todas las expectativas, puedo asegurar que con mucha educación y paciencia es posible pasear con ellos sueltos, por supuesto jamás lo haría en la ciudad, pero gracias a un temperamento equilibrado y correcta educación son grandes compañeros de salidas. Fue muy difícil a lo largo de estos años desmitificar al lebrel como un perro que solo corre, que requiere un altísimo

gasto de energía y que no es apto para incorporar órdenes. Muy lejos de eso, en otros países, los Borzoi son perros de servicio para asistencia emocional ya que son altamente sensibles y logran captar nuestras emociones incluso a veces antes que nosotros. Afortunadamente hace unos años logré moverme a un lugar en las afueras con mucho espacio al aire libre; considero que el medio ambiente donde crecen y viven mis borzois es una gran parte de lo que son, no solo físicamente sino psíquicamente. Por supuesto, siempre hay un aporte genético el cual intento preservar en la selección de mis perros; mis pilares son un temperamento equilibrado y buena salud. Tuve el privilegio en mis comienzos de ser invitada por mi gran amigo y mentor Luis Alberto Martin Leudo, criador de

As I think it happened to several of us, that stunning white and an orange female called Isabella was quite different from the type of Borzoi that I like today and breed; but she was the first, the most gorgeous, and the one who taught me everything, with her virtues and her defects, this was around 2005. As I began to dive through this wonderful world of sighthounds, so mysterious, so unique, I understood that they are superior beings, enlightened and more … That beautiful skinny dog made me change all the brands of balanced food and cook even the most unusual dishes, visit several veterinarians until after 2 years she decided to start eating. I have worked with dogs for many years and despite all expectations, I can assure you that with a lot of education and patience it is possible to walk with them loose, of

course, I would never do it in the city, but thanks to a balanced temperament and correct education they are great companions of outings. It was very difficult over the years to demystify the sighthound as a dog that only runs, requires a very high expenditure of energy, and is not apt to incorporate commands. Far from that, in other countries, Borzoi are service dogs for emotional assistance since they are highly sensitive and manage to capture our emotions even sometimes before we do. Fortunately, a few years ago I managed to move to a place on the outskirts with a lot of outdoor space; I consider the environment where my Borzoi grow and live to be a big part of who they are, not just physically but psychically. Of course, there is always a genetic contribution that I try to preserve in the selection of my dogs; my pillars are a balanced temperament and good health. I had the privilege in my beginnings of being invited by my great friend and mentor Luis Alberto Martin Leudo, a Borzoi breeder in Colombia (Bostanmi), a human being with a huge heart and great love for the breed, who welcomed me into his home and how not to forget that day, a rookie, I traveled with my bag only for 3 days and two transport boxes. I was so excited to arrive! I was greeted as if we had known each other for a lifetime, and it could be said that I received an intensive course on the breed, different bloodlines, different types, and of course, all the teaching of a mentor, to see live and direct dogs of those famous kennels that I only saw on the networks, was wonderful. I also thank my beloved Borzoi for allowing me to meet wonderful people. I would not

Fui recibida como si nos conociéramos de toda la vida, y se podría decir que recibí un curso intensivo de la raza, diferentes líneas de sangre, diferentes tipos y por supuesto toda la enseñanza de un maestro, ver en vivo y en directo perros de aquellos kennel famosos que solo veía en las redes fue maravilloso. Agradezco también a mis amados borzoi permitirme conocer gente maravillosa, no quisiera dejar de mencionar a mi amiga Lucila Arndt de Brasil, quien también me recibió en su hogar; otra aventura allí viajamos con Nirvana en busca de nuevas líneas de sangre a conocer al futuro padre

de nuestra camada; y así llegaron nuestras primeras exportaciones, México, Chile, Colombia, Brasil. A lo largo de los años nuestro primer macho fue Zingara s Smirnov, hijo de dos perros importados, del cual aún conservo hijos, nietos y bisnietos. Con él recorrimos el país y países limítrofes ganando muchos títulos y nuestro primer ranking de raza en Argentina. Como en todas las razas el perro perfecto no existe, por lo cual creo que la función de un buen criador es seleccionar aquellos ejemplares que se ajustan lo más posible a lo que me enamora de la raza, jamás perder ese temperamento equilibrado, dulce sin ser avasallante, fiel sin ser cargoso, alerta sólo cuando la ocasión lo amerite y, por supuesto, una estructura y conformación que le permita ser funcional. Un punto importantísimo para mi fue

cambiar a dieta Barf, comida natural en su mayoría cruda, esto creo que no solo es un cambio radical en cuanto a lo físico, ya que indudablemente los perros crecen y viven más sanos, sino también a lo emocional, disfrutan su comida, limpian sus dientes y se alimentan correcta y balanceadamente. También considero muy importante desde el nacimiento y durante los primeros meses de vida de los cachorros, presentarles todos los estímulos posibles y vincularlos con el mundo exterior generando una seguridad y confianza en ellos mismos que los acompañara el resto de sus vidas, creo que pasados los 3 meses recién están preparados física, sanitaria y emocionalmente para iniciar su camino con sus nuevas familias. Amo a mis perros, y seguramente no sean perfectos, o quizás si, pero destaco su excelente salud, su carácter amable, admiro a mis muchachos tan galanes y

I also consider it very important from birth and during the first months of the puppies’ life, to present them with all possible stimuli and connect them with the outside world, generating security and confidence in themselves that will accompany them for the rest of their lives, I believe that after the 3 months they are just prepared physically, healthily and emotionally to start their journey with their new families. love my dogs, and surely they are not perfect, or perhaps they are, but I highlight their excellent health, their friendly

Disfruto enormemente cada parto, me emociona verlos crecer, imaginar como serán de adultos, soy un ser muy afortunado de poder compartir con ellos gran parte del día y estar en cada detalle. Ellos siempre están a mi lado, en la justa medida, son excelentes anfitriones así como perfectos comensales de una reunión. En mis comienzos he importado dos cachorros machos de Europa, pero con el paso de los años, comencé a importar adultos, tal como decía, mis perros siempre los han recibido muy cordialmente, esto me

simplifico muchísimo en la búsqueda de lo que deseo aportar a mi kennel. Si bien las exposiciones de estructura y belleza son un indicador de la calidad de nuestros perros, y considero que todo perro con el cual planeo criar debe ser examinado por varios jueces, y haber logrado campeonatos, se que es un show, y que no todos los perros lo disfrutan, o tienen esa actitud que todos deseamos de un perro de show. Lamentablemente en Argentina es muy poca la cantidad de Borzois en pista, por lo cual la competencia pierde mérito; tampoco tenemos Especializadas, fundamentalmente por el número de ejemplares, así es que no hay posibilidades de que un juez especialista

realice una evaluación completa. De todos modos siempre es muy interesante recibir la devolución de un juzgamiento para poder trabajar esos detalles que siempre suman a nuestra visión de los ejemplares. Asimismo estoy muy agradecida de haber sido elegida en estos últimos años por criadores iconos en la raza para incorporar nuestros perros y nuestro trabajo detrás de ellos en Inglaterra, Rusia, Finlandia, Italia, República Checa, Francia, Noruega, Suecia, Suiza, Hungría y China. Simplemente gracias a mis queridos Borzois

character, I admire my boys who are so gallant and respectful at the same time, and they teach everything about life and new challenges to their hatchlings. I greatly enjoy each birth, I am excited to see them grow, imagine how they will be as adults, I am very fortunate to be able to share a large part of the day with them and be in every detail. They are always by my side, in the right measure, they are excellent hosts as well as perfect guests of a meeting. In my beginnings, I have imported two male puppies from Europe, but over the years, I began to import adults. As I said, my dogs have always received them very cordially, this simplified me a lot in the search for what I want to contribute to my kennel. Although the exhibitions of structure and beauty are an indicator of the quality of our dogs, and I consider that every dog with which I plan to breed should be examined by several judges, and have achieved championships, I know that it is a show and that not all dogs enjoy it, or have that

attitude that we all want from a show dog. Unfortunately, in Argentina there is very little Borzoi on the track, so the competition loses its merit; We do not have Specialized either, mainly due to the number of specimens, so there is no possibility that a specialist judge will carry out a complete evaluation. Nonetheless, it is always very interesting to receive the review of a judgment, to be able to work on those details that always add to our vision of the specimen. Cherie Hunchak

Un llamado a una mentalidad fuerte y un estándar elevado Elance Borzoi es una criadero canadiense de la raza Borzoi que tuvo sus inicios en 1982, año en que Cherie Hunchak adquirió su primer Borzoi. Cherie y su familia vivían en una zona remota al norte de Canadá, cuando su padre trajo a la casa dos cachorros Borzoi de cuatro meses con planes para ayudar a controlar a los depredadores de coyotes locales; Cherie quedó cautivada y comenzó la pasión por la raza. Esta fundación temprana del Borzoi como perro de trabajo continúa guiando el programa de cría de Elance en la actualidad. A los 20 años, Cherie conoció a varios criadores de Borzoi en una exposición canina y decidió adquirir un cachorro de Patti y Ed Vandenberge de Keljhenni Borzoi. No solo estaban obteniendo una cantidad significativa de títulos en el área, sino que también estaban dispuestos a pasar tiempo con ella. Juntos se sentaron para examinar álbumes de fotos y respondieron sus preguntas. Cuando llegó el momento de preparar a los perros para el show, le dijeron que se asegurara de secar a su perro con secador. Cherie hizo lo que le dijeron. Después de años de perder en todos los shows, Esa repentinamente logró su Campeonato ese fin de semana. No fueron sólo los cambios de grooming los que lograron el campeonato de este perro, también fue un cambio de lugar:

las diferentes áreas y la competencia pueden marcar la diferencia. Pero para un novato que había estado luchando durante tres años sin una sola victoria, agregar repentinamente un consejo de grooming y ganar todos los días, fue enormemente significativo. Le enseñó la lección: “si crees que tu perro es digno de estar en el ring, la presentación es importante.” El programa de cría real comenzó algunos años más tarde, siete años después de la adquisición de ese primer cachorro. Comenzar con un macho da espacio para aprender sin la tentación de querer reproducir de inmediato. Esto le dio a Cherie tiempo para investigar los pedigríes, aprender sobre el tipo y la estructura, buscar y escuchar a las personas del mundo del Borzoi que estaban dispuestas

A Call for a Strong Mindset and Elevated Standar Elance Borzoi is a Canadian Borzoi kennel that had its beginnings in 1982, the year that Cherie Hunchak purchased her first Borzoi. Growing up in northern Canada, Cherie’s family lived on a remote farm. When her father brought home two four-month-old Borzoi puppies with plans to help control the local coyote predators, Cherie was enthralled and a passion for the breed began. This early foundation of the Borzoi as a working hound continues to guide the Elance breeding program today. In her early 20s Cherie met several Borzoi breeders at a dog show and chose to purchase a puppy from Patti and Ed Vandenberge of Keljhenni Borzoi. They were not only doing a significant amount of winning in the area but were also willing to spend time with her. They sat her down to go through photo albums and answered her questions. Their encouragement to a budding enthusiast continues to touch the Borzoi world decades later, and it steeped into Cherie the importance of mentorship. As a fresh Borzoi owner Cherie stepped into the show world like everyone else – confused but enthusiastic. She learned the unspoken dress code, how to watch experienced handlers for tips, and how cold it was sleeping in a tent in the gravel parking lot of the dog show in March in Canada. Her first show puppy grew to be what was termed an “honest” dog, but not a flashy one – they lost a lot! However, it was a period of invaluable learning: take your lumps, continue to do your best, and enjoy the atmosphere and experience regardless of

La dueña de Pebbles, Phyllis Brettell de Phantom Lake Borzoi, permitió que Cherie se llevara a Pebbles a casa por un tiempo, por lo que Pebbles vino a Canadá. Pebbles reprodujo con dos perras: una de Ken para una cría conjunta y otra de Ed y Patti. De las dos perras, una reprodujo mejor que la otra: fue una buena lección sobre cómo se mezclan las diferentes líneas, para bien o para mal. La mejor camada reprodujo un perro icónico: MBISS AmCanCh. Swiftess Romantic Egotist. Romeo fue al BCOA de 1990 a los seis meses de edad y ganó en todas sus clases, y luego pasó a tener una exitosa carrera en los shows en Canadá y Estados Unidos bajo el cuidado de su eventual copropietaria, Rhanda Glenn. Su hermana se convirtió en Specialty BOB con triple título ganadora, pero trágicamente murió joven a causa de un accidente. La vida en los perros no es más que dolor y decepción. El atractivo inicial de Pebbles no fue solo que estaba reproduciendo un tipo y movimiento hermosos, sino que tenía detrás de él las elegantes líneas Crescent que atraían a Cherie. Pebbles fue engendrado por Ch. Majenkir Sandstone, y en ese momento, Cherie no sabía nada sobre Sandstone: quería a Pebbles por

Unos años más tarde, llegaría a apreciar a Sandstone mucho, mucho más: sentada en primera fila en una National, comenzó a notar que los perros de mejor calidad eran los descendientes de Sandstone. Este fue un cambio de paradigma para ella. El hecho de que Romeo era un nieto de Sandstone de repente se hizo evidente. Se dio cuenta de que la parte del pedigrí que había estado ignorando era en realidad la más valiosa. Le enseñó a buscar perros que estuvieran produciendo bien al buscar el denominador común en animales de calidad. Para la siguiente fase de su programa de cría, buscó oportunidades que se remonten a Sandstone mientras estuvieran disponibles. Otra camada exitosa co-criada con Ken usó el perro BIS/MBISS AmCanCh. Swiftess High Sierra de Andare. Cuando Dick Meen de Kishniga Borzoi se ofreció a compartir su perra Echovesna Kishniga Montana con Ken y Cherie a cambio de un cachorro engendrado por Sierra, se produjeron dos grandes perras. Dick se llevó a casa a Ch. Swiftess Kishniga Kara (todos los existentes Kishniga Borzoi de hoy se remontan a “Kara”) mientras que su hermana MBISS AmCanCh. Swiftess Kishniga Arafura, BIF FCh, CD (“Peaches”) se quedó con Ken y Cherie. Peaches era una perra

En 1994, la sociedad de cría / matrimonio de Ken y Cherie se disolvió. Romeo y Peaches se quedaron con Cherie, otros buenos perros se fueron con Ken. El programa de cría de Cherie quedó en suspenso durante algunos años, ya que se reagrupó, se volvió a casar y tuvo sus propios hijos. Cuando pudo comenzar a criar nuevamente, eligió un nuevo nombre de kennel: Elance (“AY-lawnsay”). Elance es un término de ballet, un movimiento rápido y veloz. During these early days Cherie followed the grooming advice of a friend to “wash and air dry only.” After three years of this she went back to visit Esa’s breeders and attended some shows with them. When it was time to groom the dogs for the show, they instructed her to make sure to blow dry her dog. Cherie did as she was told. After years of losing at every show, Esa suddenly finished his Championship that weekend. It wasn’t just grooming changes that finished this dog’s championship, it was also a change in locale – different areas and competition can make all the difference. But to a novice who had been slugging it out for three years without a single win, to suddenly add a grooming tip and win every day, it was hugely significant. It taught the lesson that if you think your dog is worthy of being in the ring, presentation matters. The actual breeding program began some years later – seven years after the purchase of that first puppy. Starting with a male gives room for learning without the temptation to breed immediately. This gave Cherie time to research pedigrees, learn about type and structure, seek out and listen to Borzoi people who were willing to share, and just fall more in love with the community and the breed. At a show in Washington state in the late 80s she noticed several very appealing bitches – elegant, with nice shape and good movement. They also happened to be sired by the same dog: CanCh. Crescent Phantom Lake Pebble. Without having even laid eyes on this dog, she knew she had to breed to him. During this time Cherie had married Ken Cook of Swiftess Borzoi, and she got Ken to agree to the idea of using Pebbles. Pebbles’ owner, the late Phyllis Brettell of Phantom Lake Borzoi, allowed Cherie to take Pebbles home for a time, so Pebbles came to Canada. Cherie leased two bitches: one of Ken’s for a co-breeding, and one from Ed and Patti. Pebbles was bred to both.

Of the two bitches, one produced better than the other – it was a good lesson on how different lines blend, for better or for worse. The better litter produced an iconic dog: MBISS AmCanCh. Swiftess Romantic Egotist. Romeo went to the 1990 BCOA at six months old and won all of his classes, and then went on to have a successful Canadian and US show career under the care of his eventual co-owner Rhanda Glenn. His sister became a Specialty BOB winning triple-titled bitch, but tragically died young from an accident. Life in dogs is nothing if not heartache and disappointment. The initial draw to Pebbles was not only that he was producing beautiful type and movement, but that he had behind him the elegant Crescent lines that appealed to Cherie. Pebbles was sired by Ch. Majenkir Sandstone, and at the time, Cherie knew nothing about Sandstone – she wanted Pebbles for his Crescent background. A few years later she would come to appreciate Sandstone much, much more – sitting ringside at a National she began

to notice the best quality dogs were either get or grand-get of Sandstone. This was a paradigm shift for her. The fact that Romeo was a Sandstone grandson suddenly came into focus. She realized the part of the pedigree that she’d been ignoring was actually the most valuable. It taught her to look for dogs that were producing well by watching for the common denominator in quality animals. For the next phase in her breeding program she sought out opportunities that went back to Sandstone for as long as they were available. Another successful litter co-bred with Ken used the sire BIS/MBISS AmCanCh. Swiftess High Sierra of Andare. When Dick Meen of Kishniga Borzoi offered to share his bitch Echovesna Kishniga Montana with Ken and Cherie in exchange for a puppy sired by Sierra, two great bitches were produced. Dick took home Ch. Swiftess Kishniga Kara (all of the remaining Kishniga Borzoi today go back to “Kara”) while her sister MBISS AmCanCh. Swiftess Kishniga Arafura, BIF FCh, CD (“Peaches”) stayed with Ken and Cherie. Peaches was a stellar bitch, much admired by breeders and judges. She was athletic, feminine, smooth in outline and well structured, setting the bar for the future. In 1994, the breeding partnership/marriage of Ken and Cherie dissolved. Romeo and Peaches stayed with Cherie, other fine dogs went with Ken. Cherie’s breeding program was put on hold for some years as she regrouped, remarried and had children of her own. When she was able to begin breeding again, a new kennel name – Elance (“AY-lawn-say”) was chosen. Elance is a ballet term – a quick, darting movement. Since Borzoi are so like ballet dancers - supremely athletic, graceful and elegant – it seemed fitting. Romeo was used selectively by other breeders as well and his best combinations came, not surprisingly, from bitches that went back to his grandfather Sandstone and family. Hallie and the dogs behind her were “well knit” - an intangible sense of a complete package, the animal flowing from head to tail like it’s been carved out of a single piece of marble, with the balance and flow that make for a beautiful athlete. This is something Cherie will always select for. After several generations of line breeding, Cherie began to look for outside pedigrees that would complement Hallie. She used dogs from Windnsatin kennels as well as acquiring a bitch from Jim Sillers of Seabury Borzoi. These pedigrees were added for their elegance, type, movement, and generally excellent upper arms and fronts. Cherie admits that it took her many years to grasp what a good front actually was and she gives credit to Patricia Craig Trotter’s book “Born To Win; Breed to Succeed” for making it finally click for her. She remembers going to a National and suddenly being able to discern front structure for the first time. With opened eyes she discovered there were so many Borzoi with poor fronts/ upper arms that it was as if it was part of the written breed standard. It was pervasive. She came away with a determination to build pedigrees that would be strong where the breed

privilege of working with others who share similar visions, and beautiful dogs. Anne Quinn of Summerlane Borzoi and Cherie have shared dogs and pedigrees. Patti and Chris Neale of Sylvan Borzoi took Zion home for a period, breeding him to two of their bitches, and they have been sharing dogs and breedings ever since. Most beloved from their pairings with Zion is the indomitable Pico (Ch. Sylvan Pimlico) – a dog with more titles you can shake a stick at (DC, FC, GCh, SC, CDX, RA, BCAT, CGCA, CGCU, BIF, SBIS), and one who has attained the feat of winning the BCOA Triathlon twice. Pico is also proving to be a significant sire – again, producing producers. Patti and Chris also shared their lovely Ch. Sylvan Pewter Gazelle with Cherie and Anne. Gazelle is the litter sister of the incomparable Spring (Ch. Sylvan Silver Springbok - who has the rare honor of twice winning the BCOA Best of Breed).

Some lessons learned: Moving through the decades, it becomes clear that heartbreak often seems to be more common than success. There is always more than enough tragedy to go around, so for anyone venturing into this, you must become strong enough to stand when things fall apart. Tragedy always seems to strike the best and brightest, and there have been plenty of hot, painful tears over the years as the best dog has been lost. Cherie would be the first to say that her breeding program has often been a case of “working with what’s left.” She also notes the parade of disappointments: the pairing of two stellar individuals that results in only average offspring, the resources poured down the drain time and again when frozen semen breedings result in no puppies, exciting puppies that grow up to be less than what was hoped for, etc. Breeders who last through the almost constant disappointment have learned to develop a willingness to get back up and look where the next opportunity lies. Cherie did some obedience training in the early years (pre-kids!), teaching puppy kindergarten classes through the local kennel club. She has spent many,

many hours on the lure coursing field as a member of the local lure coursing club, running any of her own dogs that wish to chase plastic (several have earned Field Championships over the years), but also working to run the trials. Recent years have seen her take up lure operating as well, and it’s become her favourite part of the sport. Even though most of her dog time is allocated for conformation shows, Cherie will never lose sight of the Borzoi as an athletic hunting dog, and she loves to see her dogs run. She is also a lifetime member of the Canadian Kennel Club, and a 38 year member of Borzoi Canada, where she has been the newsletter editor for many years as well as rotating through many Executive positions including President. She is also a long-time member of the Borzoi Club of America. Cherie has had the pleasure of judging numerous Borzoi specialty sweepstakes throughout the years, the most notable being the 2014 BCOA. She loves it almost as much as whelping puppies.

• Always love the breed more than any individual dog. • Make your relationships with others a higher priority than the dog issues, because in ten years that dog will be gone, but your friendships are what truly shape your life and the world. • Always seek to help out other breeders, because we are all in this together. • Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. • Strive to produce producers, not just a new show dog. Learn what dogs/pedigrees actually produce, and then work to build on them. • Just because it wins doesn’t mean you need to breed it. Winning doesn’t always equal producing. • The highlights and joys can come few

and far between, for all of us. Don’t steal someone else’s joy when it comes to them – their success doesn’t diminish yours, it just elevates our breed. Giving a competitor a warm word of congratulations lifts us all. • Pay attention to what is happening with your local dog bylaws and restrictions being placed on our ability to do things with the dogs we love and enjoy so much. Get involved if you can, so our dogs have a future. • Never lose sight of your most important role: for Cherie this is being a wife and mother, daughter, sister and friend. It’s been 39 years since that first puppy came home with her. The ever-widening circle of friendships made in these years have brought more joy and sense of family than she would have thought possible. And yes, the dogs. The wonderful dogs. Borzoi de Colombia al Mundo BOSTANMI es el resultado de varios factores que poco a poco se fueron dando y aliando para que este sueño fuese realidad. Por mucho tiempo oí historias acerca de los Borzoi y más concretamente de los que yo creo fueron los primeros en llegar a Colombia. Azor e Iván fueron la referencia un tanto mítica de lo que yo idealicé como los perros que algún día querría criar. Carlina Esguerra, su propietaria nunca dejó de hablar con suma pasión de dos perros Borzoi que tuvo en su infancia. Mis primeros Borzoi fueron una lámina de dos cabezas pintadas que en alguna calle encontré y que desde entonces se convirtieron en lo que algún día tenía que cristalizarse. Tener un Borzoi. Gracias a que la Señora Maria Helena Echeverri y el Señor Juez Gabriel Valdez tuvieron a bien cruzar dos ejemplares importados a Colombia de sangre Shefaro y Chataquas, tuve finalmente la oportunidad de tener mi primer Borzoi; La hembra Colombian Lebrels Anastasia a quien llame Ana y que afirmo todo aquello que yo tenia en mente con respecto a esta maravillosa raza. Pasados cinco años de estudiar acerca de la raza y de entender a fondo los comportamientos y actitudes a veces difíciles de asimilar, surgió la idea de criar mi primera camada. Borzoi from Colombia to the World BOSTANMI is the result of several factors that, little by little, took place and joined forces to make this dream come true. For a long time, I heard stories about the Borzoi and, more specifically, about those two dogs, whom I believe, were the first to arrive in Colombia. Azor and Iván were the somewhat mythical reference of what I idealized as the dogs that I would, one day, want to breed. Carlina Esguerra, the owner of them, never stopped talking, with great passion, about two Borzoi dogs that she had during her childhood. My first Borzoi was a sheet of two painted heads that I found in the street and that since then became what had to crystallize one day: Have a Borzoi. Thanks to Mrs. Maria Helena Echeverri and Judge Gabriel Valdez, who were pleased to cross two specimens imported into Colombia of Shefaro and Chataquas blood, I finally had the opportunity to have my first Borzoi. The female Colombian Lebrels Anastasia, whom I call Ana, reassures everything I have in mind regarding this amazing breed. After five years of studying about the breed and thoroughly understanding the behaviors and attitudes, sometimes difficult to assimilate, the idea of breeding my first litter came up. After a long search and the help of different people, I came to the HiTor kennel owned by Patty Fitzgerald-Coles associated with the legendary Kishnigas of Canada. There I obtained the first male named Kishnigas Perchance to Dream at Hi-Tor, Miguel. Of these two specimens, I had the first litter, reserving, for myself, the two females named Lahma Viktoria Mijailova

and Lahma Nadezhda Mijailova. With the help of Mr. Gabriel Valdéz, I had the immense fortune of meeting a famous breeder, respected worldwide and a breeder of the famous Majenkir, such as Mrs. Karen Staudt-Cartabona. She agreed to let us come with a beautiful “white angel from Majenkir ”Majenkir Paper Chase. Also, from a kennel with the same Majenkir bloodlines, Rainbo’s owned by Ronny and Jennifer Zucker, who have done great work for the Borzoi in the United States, came the female Raynbo’s Frederika. For a couple of years, we have introduced French copies of the Kennel Grand Fresnoy owned by Mrs. Marie Helene Combis. We have four new specimens from this kennel. Foret Noir at Bostanmi du Grand Fresnoy, Groenland du Grand Fresnoy, Dame Frenegonde du Grand Fresnoy and Hongrie du Grand Fresnoy. Although the objective at BOSTANMI is not exhibitions, we are aware that they are the best way to evaluate achievements and correct mistakes. Our primary goal is to promote knowledge of the breed and its proper development since we consider having an important breeding stock at the international level. También de un criadero con las mismas líneas de sangre Majenkir, Rainbo’s de propiedad de Ronny y Jennifer Zucker, quienes han hecho una gran labor por los Borzoi en los Estados Unidos, llegó la hembra Raynbo’s Frederika. Crianza consciente, alcanzar la madurez, compartir conocimientos “Hola chicos, ¿quieren ir a ver a los Borzois?” Así es como todo empezó. Era el sueño de mi madre, desde la infancia, tener algún día un Borzoi, y como estábamos a punto de mudarnos de la bulliciosa Milán a la ciudad más tranquila de Trieste, pensamos que era hora de visitar algunos criaderos para aprender sobre la raza y tener más experiencia. Nunca olvidaré el momento en que vi un Borzoi por primera vez. Mi corazón se detuvo; su indiscutible elegancia, sus conmovedores ojos oscuros, su dulce temperamento; era la raza para mí. Dos años más tarde, después de estudiar y aprender más, obtuvimos nuestra primera cachorra del mismo kennel. Comencé a asistir a shows caninos con ella, luego trabajé también como handler del criador. Me dio la posibilidad de aprender, crecer y comprender la raza. Lo que comenzó como una cachorra desgarbada creció hasta convertirse en una perra de show muy exitosa y fue la fundación de nuestro criadero. Los buenos mentores son cruciales para un nuevo criador, y puedo decir que gané el premio gordo al encontrar a los míos, Regina Erhart Tuhrnheer (Borzoi & Shetland Sheepdog de SandSound) y Dr. Stefano Corvi (Antica Carsulae Borzoi). Su conocimiento fue fundamental para mi formación como criadora. Además, tuve la suerte de tener la posibilidad de viajar mucho durante los años participando en exposiciones caninas y visitando kennels. Ver y tocar es la clave para construir una idea concreta del Borzoi ideal y de cada perro que nos interese para nuestro propio programa de cría. Es indispensable encontrar una pareja que complemente bien a la perra, y sin duda alguna Lennox, el suizo DWZRV Ch Le Sphinx Killing Me Softly (Zimistraija Sarek x Le Sphinx Filippiia) era el elegido. Aportó elegancia, hermosas cabezas y un temperamento maravilloso a los cachorros, varios de los cuales tuvieron mucho éxito. Fueron 11 cachorros, de los cuales 4 campeones italianos e internacionales, un campeón dual (conformación y rendimiento), todos ellos también tienen varios otros títulos de campeonatos nacionales. Una mención especial es para

nuestra selección de la camada, Hiba, que también fue ganadora de BISS y VBISS, ganadora de Veteranos europeos y Veteranos de Eurosighthound. Un Borzoi debe estar en forma y saludable hasta la vejez, por lo que para Hiba haber ganado estos títulos en las clases de veteranos es un motivo de orgullo para nuestro kennel. Hiba fue el eje central en nuestro programa de cría. Era un ejemplar encantadora, sana, tranquila, elegante y una excelente perra de cría. Mindful Breeding, Reaching Maturity, Sharing Knowledge “Hey kids, do you want to go see the Borzois?” This is how it all began. It was my mother’s dream since childhood to one day own a Borzoi, and seeing as we were about to move from the busy city of Milan to the more quiet town of Trieste, we thought it was time to visit some kennels to learn about the breed and have a more hands-on experience. I will never forget the moment I saw a Borzoi for the first time. My heart stopped; their undisputed elegance, their soulful dark eyes, sweet temperament; it was the breed for me.

Two years later, after more studying and learning, we got our first puppy from the same kennel. I started going on shows with her, later working also as the handler for the breeder. It gave me the possibility of learning, growing and understanding the breed. What started as a gangly puppy grew up to become a very successful show bitch and the foundation of our kennel.

A Borzoi should be fit and healthy until old age, so for Hiba to have gained these titles in the veteran classes is a point of pride for our kennel.

Good mentors are crucial to a new breeder, and I can say that I hit the jackpot finding mine, Regina Erhart Tuhrnheer (Borzoi & Shetland Sheepdog from SandSound) and Dr. Stefano Corvi (Antica Carsulae Borzoi). Their knowledge was essential for my formation as a breeder. Moreover, I was lucky to have the possibility to travel extensively during the years taking part in dog-shows and visiting kennels. To see and to touch is the key to build a concrete idea of the ideal Borzoi and of every dog we are interested in for our own breeding program. Finally, it was time for our first litter. I knew my female, I knew her strengths, her bloodline and her weaknesses. It’s indispensable to find a mate that compliments the bitch well, and Lennox, Swiss DWZRV Ch Le Sphinx Killing Me Softly (Zimistraija Sarek x Le Sphinx Filippiia) surely did. He brought elegance, beautiful

They were 11 puppies, out of which 4 Italian and International Champions, a Dual Champion (conformation and performance), all of them also have several other national championship titles. Hiba took the “front stage” of our breeding program. She was a lovely specimen,

healthy, easy-going, elegant, and an excellent brood bitch. She produced 2 litters for us, bearing a total of 15 puppies. Out of these two litters, several dogs were very successful both in our home country and abroad. Our first export was a male who went to live in Australia: Multi BIS RBISS JBISS #1 Borzoi breed and all breeds 2018 AUS SUP Ch Full Moon Fever Tantezampe for Clovelly. We’re very happy that not only is he a healthy, lovely dog, but a proven stud too. Good studs and brood bitches should pass on their qualities to the offspring and serve as stepping stones to the betterment of the breed. Our kennel has exported several dogs through the years. Though I am very proud of my dogs’ accomplishments, I never forget to keep a critical eye on my stock; actually, those who know me best sometimes think me overly hard in detecting faults in my own dogs. Although it is true, I still feel it is necessary. I believe that in recent times conformation shows have warped our expectations of the breed. Many young people are not interested enough in performance events to realize that dog shows are becoming a problem for our breed, where often we see dogs praised mainly due to their huge size and flashiness. Many want their young dogs to look “finished” as soon as possible, but Borzois are like fine wine, they become better as they age. We should all take a step back and allow our youngsters to look the part: gangly, elk-like and green, only to watch them bloom at 3 or 4 years into a magnificent dog. Too often we see dogs in the conformation rings that look powerful and showy at a young age, to then fade once they reach the age of 7 or 8; or are just too big to be functional in the field. I would like for all of us breeders to take a step back and reevaluate our dogs, and the specimens in the breed at the moment, and wonder if we’re going in the right direction. All in all, these last 15 years have been an incredible journey, from the first dog show to our latest litter, born in 2020. I couldn’t have done this without the support of my family, friends, mentors, and all our puppy buyers who take wonderful care of our pups. I would like to thank all those that have shared with me their experience and

Me gustaría agradecer a todos aquellos que han compartido conmigo su experiencia y conocimiento del mundo de los perros de pura raza y a los criadores dispuestos a compartir su experiencia, que es fundamental para una colaboración fluida entre criadores. Además, es muy recomendable que algunos criadores asuman la “carga” de ser mentores de las nuevas generaciones (lo que de todos modos no debería excluir la propia investigación e información) porque son estas personas las que tienen el futuro de la raza y el deporte en sus manos. Su amabilidad y consejos no deben olvidarse y siempre debemos mostrar respeto por todo el trabajo que ya han hecho por la raza. Nuestro trabajo se basa en las bases establecidas por estas personas increíbles. Espero algún día ser una de las personas a las que la generación joven acudirá en busca de consejo y orientación. Furthermore, it is highly commendable that some breeders take the “burden” to mentor the new generations (which should not anyway preclude anyone’s own research and information) because it’s these people who hold the future of the breed and the sport in their hands. Their kindness and advice shouldn’t be forgotten and we should always show respect for all the work they have already done for the breed. Our work is set on the foundation laid by these amazing people. I hope one day to be one of the people the young generation will turn to for advice and guidance. Tuve la suerte de tener personas a mi alrededor que apoyaron y nutrieron mi pasión y me ayudaron en el camino. Create a Positive Loop I have been involved in Borzois for several years, but I am cautious about saying how many years, because you will all be able to guess my age. I have been fortunate enough to have bred and owned many champions. These champions are UK, Irish and international. One of my most memorable times was being invited to judge in Russia, the home of our breed. My love for this breed started at an early age and as a young man and boy I fell for this breed. I was lucky to have people around me who supported and nurtured my passion and helped me along the way. This experience from the start of being involved in the breed has continued to develop into an underpinning part of my philosophy. I strongly believe that we all learn from each other and particularly that those breeders and those who have been in the show world before us, have a lot to offer. We should treasure their knowledge and use it, because if we don’t, it could be lost, and it is our breed and enjoyment that will suffer. It is also vital that we nurture and support those who are new to the breed and those interested in showing or breeding. These people are the future and without them and our support we cannot hope that the breed will continue to develop and progress. Also, there is another spin-off in that recognition of those who have shown before us, those who are showing now and those who show in the future brings about a unique comradery, which is very special and should be cherished within the breed.
