I know that this historically has been a complicated and controversial discussion within our community and I’m asking you, our members, to keep the conversations open and respectful.

The mountains of upstate New York provided the initial inspiration for a hobby that would develop into a passion during a 10-day trip to Israel in 2000. Over the years, Jacob turned his passion into a thriving wedding photography studio that afforded him the opportunity to travel to various countries. In 2012, he packed everything he needed into a backpack and set out on a four and a half month journey through eight countries; including Italy, Turkey, Croatia, and Greece. The show will feature images from his travels around the world for sale in limited edition canvases and art prints. Jake is also a group fitness instructor here at the MJCC.
Germantown Arts League Opening Reception Thu, Feb 6, 5:30-7:30pm Show on display Feb 4–27
The Memphis/Germantown Art League (MGAL) is a nonprofit organization of visual artists and associates supporting the work of its member artists. The League’s purpose is to aid its member artists in their professional growth and in the development of their artistic skills by providing exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, and other continuing education opportunities. In addition, the League works to enrich the community by presenting original fine art in public exhibits, participating in other community art activities and supporting art education in the schools. Organized on August 16, 1976, as the Germantown Art League, the group was chartered on June 22, 1977, as a nonprofit Tennessee corporation. In May 1988, the organization’s name was changed to Memphis/Germantown Art League in recognition of the wider geographical distribution of its members. Today the organization includes substantial membership from locations throughout the mid-south area and surrounding states. The League depends on all its members as volunteers to serve on its Board of Directors and committees and to assist in the work of the organization. follow us on facebook at www.facebook.com/memphisjcc

All the Way From Israel with Shlomo Molla, First Ethiopian Jew to be Deputy Speaker of the Knesset Tue, Feb 11 from 7-9pm Hear Mr. Molla’s story of a triumphant journey from his small village in Ethiopia to his current home in Israel. Shlomo Molla, born in Ethiopia in the Gondar Province, started to emigrate from Ethiopia by foot in 1984 and was rescued in Sudan by Israeli Forces. Upon arrival in Israel, while sick with malaria, Molla was sent to an immigration absorption center in Safed and learned Hebrew in the hospital. a law degree, and works to improve the civil rights of Ethiopians in Israel. When he was elected to the Knesset in 2008, he became the second-ever Knesset member of Ethiopian ancestry, and was the first to hold the position of Deputy Speaker. Today, Molla is fighting to enhance the lives of Ethiopian Jews in Israel, and acts as Chairman for the Lobby for Equality and Pluralism and for the Lobby for the Struggle Against Racism. In Molla’s own words, “On paper, our country (The State of Israel) mandates equality for all but unfortunately, the reality is very different.” The Ethiopian Jewish story is not unlike that of African-Americans’ struggle in the US.

However, if you are interested in taking one of the other levels of dance instruction, you must make arrangements with the Director of the Markell School of Dance, Jenni Nettleton, before “dropping-in” to determine what level of dance would be appropriate.

New Year’s Resolution Tips Stay Consistent
• Lack of consistency is one of the main reasons people fail to see results from their fitness programs. Try to average at least three workouts per week. • Set monthly or quarterly goals for number of sessions, rather than weekly. • Try setting up a weekly schedule that includes exercise time built in along with your other priorities. Find a partner, a class, or a personal trainer if that is what you need to stay on track.
Work Out with a Purpose
• FOCUS. Challenge yourself occasionally so that you continue to improve. • Staying focused does not mean all hard work. Important parts of a planned program are rest days, easy days, and fun days.
Add Strength Training to your Routine • The decline in muscle mass and strength that occurs with aging can be even more pronounced than the decline in aerobic fitness. • Increased muscle strength can make everyday tasks easier and significantly improve quality of life. • More and more, research studies are suggesting that a combination of strength
and aerobic exercises may be the best way to lose fat and improve body composition.
Diet Pitfalls to Avoid
• Emphasis On The Scale You are making healthy changes to your body, even if the needle doesn’t move. • Not Exercising Just 15 minutes a day can make a big difference in achieving your goals. You will be able to eat more (and still lose weight!) and your body will gain the physical benefits of working out! • Starvation Starving your body of calories and nutrients will upset your metabolism and actually make it harder to achieve your dieting goals. You have to eat to lose! • Cutting Out Foods You don’t have to give up the foods you love! You can get rid of cravings by eating in moderation. Controlling your portions is key. • Giving Up If you want to create a healthier lifestyle, it will take time. Don’t let a little frustration get in the way of you and your ultimate goal. • Impossible Expectations You can’t lose 30 pounds in 30 minutes; don’t expect to. Set realistic goals for yourself and don’t compare your results to others’. Everyone’s body is different!
