a message from our board chair to develop into amazing leaders of our camp community. Our staff are also excited to enhance our Mah Ani Camp, a camp for 7th and 8th graders who spend their time at camp making a difference in the world though community service. To learn more about camp and to register, get a copy of the brochure at the Member Service Desk or view it online at jccmemphis.org/camp. We are also very excited about this year’s Morris and Mollye Folgeman International Jewish Film Festival! There is an amazing list of films this year, and we hope to see you Opening Night at the Malco Paradiso on January 31st.

Elise Jordan, Board Chair Dear Members, Every time I walk the halls of this place, I see so many smiles both young and old. I want to take a moment to thank all of the staff and volunteers at the MJCC who work so hard to make the J an exciting, safe, and inspiring place to be. In November, CEO Larry Skolnick took a group of our staff on a professional development seminar to Israel. I have heard from some of the staff about how meaningful and motivating this trip was for them. I am excited that they have returned with new ideas and inspiration to bring back to our MJCC community. Keep up the amazing work J staff, and again thank you for all you do! We are excited about the impending summer and the amazing offerings at the MJCC Summer Camp. Returning this summer include the very popular Circus, STEAM, J Ninja Warrior, LEGO®, Chess, Art, Theatre, Rock Band, and Sports camps. This year, we are excited to continue our Counselor In Training program for our entering 9th and 10th graders. This program gives teens the tools

shainberg art gallery Power of Protest: The Movement to Free the Soviet Jews In the gallery: January 2–31

The movement to free Soviet Jews provides a fascinating example of how American activists have played, and continue to play, significant roles in promoting religious liberty at home and abroad. Drawing on 1960s-era social protest movements, they responded to the restrictions forced upon refuseniks by staging public demonstrations, holding a massive rally in Washington D.C., and calling for politicians at all levels of the government to speak out against Soviet oppression. The exhibition will serve as a reminder of the unique promise of religious freedom in America and our continuing responsibility to preserve and protect that freedom. Power of Protest: The Movement to Free Soviet Jews is organized by the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia and this project was made possible in part by the institute of Museum and Library Services MA-10-16-0208-16

Amy Hutcheson

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 7, from 5:30–7:30pm In the gallery: February 3–28 My paintings are as much about what I have left in them as they are about what I have taken away. Drawings are layered on top of each other and then erased and manipulated. Each and every piece explores what is intimate, what is on display --what cherished, what abandoned. Within pieces, each image unfurls then curls up with itself, folding and unfolding at the same time.
