a message from our board chair In March, our Israeli Artist in Residence, Erez Kaganovitz, arrives. A journalist, photographer, and storyteller, Erez will share the social fabric of Tel Aviv art and life stories of different “humans” while offering a Tel Aviv 101 insight into the most liberal and diverse city in the Middle-East. Our Israeli Artist in Residence program is made possible by a generous grant from the Lemsky Endowment Fund of Memphis. We are honored and excited to announce that Memphis has been selected as the host city of the 2018 JCCA Biennial Conference, May 5-9. Memphis will have over 600 executives and lay leaders from across North America working together through intensive professional development opportunities

Elise Jordan, Chair woman Dear Members, Can you believe the year is almost over? Looking ahead to 2018, we eagerly await the Morris and Mollye Fogelman International Film Festival, the arrival of our Israeli Artist in Residence, the 2018 JCCA Biennial Conference and much, much more. The Morris and Mollye International Film Festival continues to grow and grow each year. Celebrating its fourth year, the festival will present at least eight films February 1-22. You will receive a mailer with all the details shortly after the New Year. With the spring semester upon us, it means we are that much closer to summer! We can’t wait for you and your family to help us celebrate the 68th year of MJCC Summer Camp in 2018. We kick off the summer camp season with Camp Carnival on Sunday, March 4, 2018. We hope all new and returning campers will join us for popcorn, face painting and games. Be on the lookout for the 2018 camp brochure the beginning of February.

center for jewish living & learning CJLL Israeli in Residence Series The Israeli in Residence Series seeks to bridge our diaspora community with Israel through making real human connections with diverse and talented Israeli personalities. It is made possible by a grant from the Lemsky Endowment Fund of Memphis Jewish Federation.

Erez Kaganovitz Israeli Artist in Residence Coming in March 2018! Erez is the Human behind Humans of Tel Aviv. A lover of photography and storytelling, he studied Journalism and International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, but discovered his passion for photography in India on the banks of the Ganga river. After finishing his studies, he moved to Tel Aviv and discovered a place where every character in the city has their own story, attitude, and unique perspective just waiting to be uncovered. This unbelievable sense of diversity coupled with his curiosity brought him to wander the streets of Tel Aviv with his camera. In the beginning, he just posted the pictures and stories to his Facebook account, but in 2012, he stumbled upon Humans of New York. After 24 hours, he decided to open his own ‘Humans of’ page, but to give it a personal twist. To date he’s taken nearly 1000 portraits and stories, and has met the most fascinating Humans Tel Aviv has to offer along the way. While in Memphis, Erez will lecture on the social fabric of Tel Aviv, sharing what he’s learned through his art, and using the life stories of different ‘Humans’ to offer a ‘Tel Aviv 101’ insight into the most liberal and diverse city in the Middle-East. He will also speak about how Tel Aviv serves as a laboratory to explore democracy, human rights, and the public sphere, and offer a public workshop where participants will learn the art of telling stories with street photography. Erez’s residency project will be to create a ‘Humans of Jewish Memphis’ that we can cherish and share for years to come.

Pen and Palette Painters

Steve Heard

Opening Reception: Sunday, January 7, from 2:00-4:00pm In the gallery January 3–31

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 1, from 5:30-7:30pm In the gallery February 1–27

Pen and Palette Painters are a small group of artists who have painted together for many years at a variety of locations. Styles vary from landscapes and florals to abstract and materials vary from pastels to oils. Several members of this group also belong to the Bartlett Art Association and show work at numerous venues around the area.

Steve’s focus is Memphis and its surroundings. Cityscapes showing the beauty and contrast of hardscapes like concrete glass and metal, balanced against the movement and flow of shadows, traffic, and the river. His subjects also include figurative paintings with texture and bold strokes, landscapes with thick layers of paint and lively colors.

Temperal Landscape

by Norman Soskel and Judith Barrie Opening Reception: Thursday, March 1, from 5:30-7:30pm In the gallery March 1–30 Despite the ever changing and therefore transient and ephemeral cultural landscape of the Southwest Indians, in particular, the Ancestral Puebloans, it represents universality in themes, ideals, and traditions, which are eternal. This melding of the land and its inhabitants, human and otherwise, that changes over time is a temporal phenomenon mirroring the aging process and the vicissitudes that are experienced along with life changing events, all of which are presented in this exhibit.
