a message from our board chair partnership with Indie Memphis, Facing History and Ourselves and Memphis Friends of Israel. Our Center for Jewish Living and Learning recently hosted a visit by Israeli Artist In Residence, Erez Kaganovitz. His “Humans of Tel Aviv” photography portraits and stories of Tel Aviv Humans. Inspired by his work Erez will culminate his stay in Memphis by training others on the art of photography and storytelling who will help to produce Jewish Community Partner’s 70 Faces Project (Humans of Jewish Memphis). It will be shown in both Memphis at the MJCC and in Shoham our sister community in Israel. MJCC Summer Camp registration is now open for ages 3 through 10th grade. This summer campers will join us on our “summer road trip” with new and returning camp stops.

Elise Jordan, Board Chair Dear Members, One of the most amazing things about being a member of the MJCC is that in addition to the myriad of programs and services that we offer, you truly do become a part of a larger community…the MJCC family. Being a part of a community like the MJCC, means that you have the opportunity to impact the lives of others and to have others touch your life as well. On Monday, February 12, we lost a key member of the MJCC family. Mary Shainberg, a friend of the MJCC and a friend to so many in our community passed away. As we mourn the loss of a good friend, we also celebrate her life as we witness the vibrancy in programming here at the MJCC that her ongoing philanthropy and support helped to foster. As the cold winter draws to a close and warmer weather is arriving, we celebrate our programmatic successes like the Morris and Mollye Fogelman International Jewish Film Festival which brought new and returning guests to see inspirational, educational, and entertaining films representing genres from all of over the world, offered in

Our summer road trip continues with the new Mah Ani Camp for incoming 7th and 8th graders a community improvement, caring for others, and learning leadership skills program. The final stop on our summer road trip is the Counselor-In-Training program to rising 9th and 10 graders. To learn more about summer camp and to register, pick up a copy of the brochure(s) at the Member Service Desk or view it online at jccmemphis. org/camp. I look forward to seeing you soon!

Summer Camp 201t83 June 4 - Augus

My children attended the MJCC Summer camp 30 years ago and although they live out of town, they wanted their children to have the same camp experience. My grandchildren now attend MJCC summer camp every year and couldn't be happier! – An Excited Grandparent MJCC offers so much at summer camps. I am very impressed with the organization and the counselors. Truly a wonderful experience for any child. Every year I am amazed at all the different camps the MJCC offers. We are looking forward to another terrific summer. 3 year MJCC Camp Parent –

Carl E. Moore Exhibit

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 3, from 5:30–7:30pm In the gallery May 1-31 Carl uses media based events as the primary theme for artwork, taking those situations and reducing them down to their most basic form, allowing a narrative creation. He uses color and content to redefine the conversation by developing a social connection between the characters and their environment. The color becomes an important part of that dialogue, and the content becomes part of the social statement.

Bob Zellner | Keynote speaker | May 2 | 7PM

Besa: The Promise | Film screening | May 15 | 7PM

Bob is one of the most influential leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. The son and grandson of Klansman, he risked his life many times in the fight to achieve The Second Emancipation. As an organizer of The Freedom Rides of 1961 and the first white southerner to serve as field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Rosa Parks, and many other.

The film weaves Albania’s heroism in WWII through the journeys of two men. Norman Gershman, a renowned Jewish photographer determined to document accounts of the Albanian Muslims who rescued Jews during the Holocaust. The other is Rexhep Hoxha, a Muslim-Albanian. He must fulfill the promise he made to a Jewish family his father rescued and return to them a set of Hebrew prayer books they left behind.

I Am Your Protector | Exhibit | Throughout May

This socially-engaged art installation is created by Memphis-based artist Yancy VillaCalvo. It includes three main elements: a physical barrier with portraits of families and individuals, free standing life-size mirror and cut-out silhouettes of families surrounding the wall, and an actual fence in which people can express a wish, a frustration, a solution, a thought or a prayer.

This powerful storytelling and photography exhibit will be displayed to share diverse stories of people who have been a “protector” of someone who is different than them. Carl E. Moore | Exhibit | Throughout May See Scene page 22 for more information.

Barrier Free | Exhibit | Throughout May

All events are free and open to all. For more information, go jccmemphis.org/justice or 23 contact Marcy Stagner at mstagner@jccmemphis.org or (901) 259-9230.
