a message from our board chair Passionate. Vibrant. Gracious. Humble. A community with a remarkable sense of itself. A community from which more than 80 percent of its 8,000 Jews are participants in its magnificent Jewish Community Center—a proud example of a Jewish “town square.” I would like to personally thank our entire staff and all of the many volunteers that helped to make the 2018 JCCA Biennial so successful! What a proud and honorable moment for the MJCC! Thank you to FedEx, the JCC host community presenting sponsor. Thank you to our host community supporting sponsors including: Dinstuhl’s Fine Candies, Ghost River Brewing, Jewish Community Partners, Ricki’s Cookie Corner, Spark Printing, and Sprouts Farmers Market. One of my favorite season’s at the MJCC is the summertime! There is so much energy in the air with

Ahavat Chinam Challenge July 1–22 & July 27
Early To Bed (ETB) Shabbat Dinners
Ahavat Chinam, Hebrew for ‘altruistic love’, is love given freely with no strings attached. During the Three Weeks, a period of mourning recalling the destruction of the Jewish Temples – which our Rabbis teach was a consequence of needless Jewish infighting – the MJCC Ahavat Chinam Challenge seeks to build bridges, strengthen existing bonds, and make a bold statement of our mutual caring and interdependence. We encourage all of our individual members to make special efforts during this time to perform unprompted deeds of kindness toward one another. Additionally, when you witness or are the beneficiary of kindness during the Three Weeks, we ask that you share your story by posting it to our wall of kindness documenting the character of our stellar community. Also look for information during this time about our SAGE (Secret Agency Gift Exchange) program involving all our local Jewish agencies.
Elul Enrichment Begins Sunday, August 12 The Jewish month of Elul, which precedes the High Holidays of Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, functions as a traditional time of personal reflection and selfimprovement. Various inherited customs actively seek to increase our Jewish learning, strengthen our ritual practice, and improve our human character and relationships. Throughout the month of Elul, Rabbi Harris will offer a daily guide with suggestions for enrichment. Each Elul Enrichment guide will include some timely Torah tidbits, guided questions for introspection, and practical suggestions for implementing positive activities seamlessly into your daily routine.
Sukkah Sukkariya – Candy Sukkah Building Thursday, September 20 from 4:30pm-6:30pm Stop by the MJCC lobby between 4:30pm and 6:30pm to learn about making a traditional Sukkah for the Sukkot holiday. Transform your newfound knowledge from theory to practice by constructing your own model Sukkah with Candy. Yum!

CJLL has new Israel initiatives happening!
Welcome Meitav, MJCC Community Shlicha! Meitav Menachem is 23 years old and lives in Modi'in, Israel. She manages a branch of the Maccabi Tzair youth movement. Previously, she was an IDF Education Officer and Commander, as well as a Shlicha (Israeli Emissary) in Seattle's SJCC summer camp. She has a passion for baking, travel, hiking, and Salsa dancing, and is excited to be joining the Memphis Jewish community. As our full time Israeli in Residence through the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI)’s long term Shlichut (emissary) program, she will apply her significant energy and talents toward enhancing and growing the Israel related programming emanating out of the CJLL (Center for Jewish Living and Learning). Through our ongoing partnerships, Meitav will assuredly be a stellar resource throughout Jewish Memphis and the broader Memphis community.

shainberg art gallery Sarah Megan Jenkins presents "Awakened by the Storm"
Opening Reception: Thursday, August 2, from 5:30–7:30pm In the gallery: August 2–30 This collection of work takes the viewer on a journey through various weather conditions that cycle through the land. Heavy winds and rain become a destructive force, while at the same time it cleanses and refreshes the Earth. When the storm is overhead and the winds and rain surround you, the calm and safety of a clear sky seems so far away. Much like in life, troubles arise, confront and often consume us, we must remember that the storm will pass, the sun will return, and it will give new life. Native to Oxford, Mississippi, Sarah Megan Jenkins studied Painting at Memphis College of Art in Tennessee, completing her degree in 2010. Sarah relocated outside of New Orleans, Louisiana, where she now lives and paints full time.
Dana Finimore presents "Co-Evolve", a Juxtaposition of mixed media and meta. Opening Reception: Thursday, September 6, from 5:30–7:30 In the gallery: September 5–28 The core of my work is centered in the ideology that humans possess an evolutionary tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. My relationship with nature is symbiotic, and as an artist, my work is a form of advocacy for the landscape, a kind of artistic preservation tactic. Working in metal and mixed media, which includes the addition of gathered items discovered on site, I work intuitively so that the execution is reactionary. The ritualistic use of found materials speaks of my reverence for the land and gives the work a tangible link to the subject. I break down the terrain into a series of marks, textures, and shapes. Although the wearable sculptures and paintings are closely related, they ultimately co-evolve as separate pieces during my process. This reciprocal act lends itself to making work that is completely responsive to the renewal of body and mind that I experience while spending time in nature.
