MJCC INTERNATIONAL
Jewish Film F E S T I V A L APRIL 3 – 6, 2014 The Other Son
$10 fee/$7 Members • Thursday, April 3 at 7:00pm Conversation with Rabbi Shai Finklestein to Follow “A switched-at-birth tale, The Other Son raises the stakes on what is already an emotionally charged situation.” —The Huffington Post
Joseph, an 18-year-old preparing to join the Israeli army for his mandatory military service, lives at home in a suburb of Tel Aviv with his parents, France-born Orith and Israel-born Alon Silber. A blood test for Joseph’s military service reveals that he is not their biological son. During the Gulf War, Joseph was evacuated from a clinic along with another baby. Joseph, the Palestinian baby, went to Tel Aviv with the Silbers, and their Jewish child went to the West Bank with an Arab couple. The revelation turns the lives of the two families upside-down, forcing them to reassess their respective identities, values, and beliefs.
Simon and the Oaks
Saturday, April 5 at 9:00pm • $10 fee/$7 Members Doors open at 8:30 • Holy Cow concessions available for purchase “It is unabashedly sentimental and epic, and rather bold in the way it takes place during and after the Holocaust but is not defined by it. The real story is of two unconventional families who help each other in a time fraught with danger.” —Roger Ebert
An epic drama spanning the years 1939 to 1952, this is the gripping story of Simon, who grows up in a working-class family in Sweden. Intellectually gifted, he finally convinces his father to send him to an upper-class grammar school. There, he meets Isak, the son of a wealthy Jewish bookseller who has fled Nazi persecution in Germany. Simon is dazzled by the books, art, and music he encounters at Isak’s father’s home. Isak, on the other hand, draws comfort from learning to do something with his hands, helping Simon’s dad make boats. When Isak faces trouble at home, he is taken in by Simon’s family and the two households slowly merge, connecting in unexpected ways as war rages all over Europe.
Hava Nagila
$10 fee/ $7 Members • Sunday April 6th at 1:00pm “Through the unlikely prism of this song the documentary manages to tell a complicated story of cultural adaptation while providing a fresh look at a good chunk of modern Jewish history.“ —The New York Times
It's to music what the bagel is to food – a Jewish staple that has transcended its origins and become a worldwide hit. Bob Dylan sang it. Elvis, too. Follow this party song on its journey from the shtetls of Eastern Europe to the cul-de‐sacs of America in a film that’s both hilarious and deep. Featuring interviews with Harry Belafonte, Connie Francis, Glen Campbell, Leonard Nimoy, Regina Spektor, and more, Hava Nagila takes viewers from Ukraine and Israel to the Catskills, Greenwich Village, Hollywood, and even Bollywood, using the song as a springboard to explore Jewish history and identity and to spotlight the cross-cultural connections that can only be achieved through music.

Whole Foods Grand Opening Exhibit
The ECC was asked to design and create three art panels, on the theme of healthy living, to be displayed in the new store. The installation will be up through March 1, 2014. Amy Hutcheson, MJCC’s Art House Director, who worked with the kids on the finished products, describes the process: We titled the three pieces, collectively, Fuel. What sort of things do we need to ‘fuel’ ourselves? In working with the students on such large pieces, I found they really had to use their bodies actively to work on the pieces. My Jr. K students had to stretch and move their arms and fingers across the water canvas to replicate our idea of water running. The food piece Broccoli pushed them to use their fine motor skills to crinkle and crunch the paper. Also, because we worked with the canvas flat on the ground, they had to stretch and balance to place their broccoli florets onto the piece. And finally, the Kindergarten class talked about movement, each child creating gesture drawings of an active body. It inspired the children to have more awareness of how our body moves and serves us. Art, like healthy living, serves both the individual and the community. register online at jccmemphis.org/register

shainberg art gallery “Sanctuary”
Presented by Carolyn Hope Clark In Partnership with Virginia Fisher’s Copper Baskets March 23–April 18 • Opening March 23, 2–4pm Bright undulating fields of color draws you into an etherial world created by artist Carolyn Hope Clark. This tranquil gallery space coupled with the inherent essence of her work have inspired the show’s title: ”Sanctuary”. Carolyn’s painting have been described as beautiful, soothing, healing, and meditative. As a former massage therapist and intuitive healer, Carolyn views her art as an extension of that work. She believes creating and viewing art can touch inner aspects of our being and promote deep healing. Applying layer upon layer of acrylic paint, Carolyn’s personal painting process is spontaneous and intuitive. “If there is any goal or intention it would be to allow divine inspiration to flow through me, creating images that bring a sense of peace and healing to those willing to explore”. Born and raised here, Virginia Fisher is proud to call Memphis home. Her house and studio are in Midtown, where she lives with her husband and 2 cats. Virginia’s training in painting, metal smithing, and fiber arts are seen in each piece she makes. A patience for repetition and a passion for copper define Virginia Fisher’s current work. We are pleased to announce that the StandWithUs Israeli Soldiers’ Stories (ISS) 2014 Tour will be coming to the MJCC. This is their fifth annual ISS tour, which has already made an impact on thousands of people across the country. ISS will be educating the community about the facts on the ground in Israel and the real life experience of this diverse group of Israeli soldiers who serve to protect civilians on both sides of the conflict. The soldiers’ stories on this tour are inspirational, human, personal, and demonstrate clearly how the IDF employs the strictest moral standards while fighting a terrorist foe that callously puts civilians on both sides in harm’s way. They come with a message of peace and hope for a future where their service will no longer be necessary.

Eating for Health
by Jaynie Judaken and Bridget Mirza, M.S., R.D., L.D.N. We all know we should increase the amounts of fruits and vegetables we eat. We know the latest nutrition superstars (kale, pomegranates). We know the health benefits of the good-old standbys (strawberries, lemons, red grapes, cucumbers). But knowing is sometimes not enough to make us change. We need change to be easy; to not be too much of a burden on us at one time. And with food, we need change to be enjoyable as well if it is going to last long! We’ve all heard about juicing, but many of us refuse to shell out big bucks to purchase our own machines or we dread Jaynie Judaken and Bridget Mirza spending lots of time cleaning out filters and other parts. Yet, so many of us don’t have the time to wash, peel, cut, chop, or cook the amount of fruits or vegetables we need to meet our health goals. Did you know a 60year old woman needs 4 cups of fruits and vegetables a day? A 60-year-old man needs 5! We have a solution that utilizes a common kitchen appliance—a blender—to liquefy a number of fruits and vegetables so that you can have an instant, healthy meal with hardly any prep time or mess. Plus, our recipe includes plant protein powder to help build up (and keep) those muscles you’ve been working on! Kale-Berry Blast (makes 2 servings) 1 cup chopped fresh kale leaves, Directions: stems removed (about 5 stalks) Blend all ingredients, adding a few ice cubes if desired. Alternatively, you can 1/2 cup pomegranate juice 1/2 cup red grapes use frozen fresh fruit in place of the ice. 1/2 cup strawberries Nutrition Analysis (per serving): 1/4 medium cucumber, sliced 195 calories 1 lemon, squeezed 13.5 g protein 2 teaspoons flaxseed oil 11 g fat (0 g saturated fat, 0 g trans fat) 1 scoop (30 grams) vanilla-flavored plant25 g carbohydrate based protein powder (such as PlantFusion) 4.3 g fiber82 mg calcium 1/2 cup water (or more if 212 mg sodium desired for consistency) 96 mg vitamin C 3386 IU vitamin A *A note of caution to those taking blood-thinners like Coumadin (warfarin): foods high in vitamin K (such as kale) can interfere with your medicine. Please talk with your doctor before increasing or decreasing your intake of foods high in vitamin K. register online at jccmemphis.org/register

wellness What is ZUMBA Toning?
ZUMBA Toning is a class that works on circuit training (a few minutes of cardio followed by a few minutes of strength training) which creates a higher calorie burn than strength training alone, offers some cardiovascular exercise, and because it is still Zumba – it’s FUN! ZUMBA Toning is a great for those trying ZUMBA for the first time and for those who have reached a plateau with cardio alone. It offers an amazing workout for participants of all fitness levels. What makes ZUMBA Toning so different? • ZUMBA Toning classes focus on strength training exercises within the dances, with the addition of toning sticks (weights that sound like maracas when you shake them). • ZUMBA Toning involves sculpting of the body through cardio dance. It targets the abs, thighs, arms, and other muscles throughout the body, in a fun and exciting workout! Mon 7–8pm • Thu 9:30–10:30am $10 fee/Members Free
