a letter from our chairman Dear Members, It has been a rewarding and inspiring winter at the MJCC. The jewel in the crown of our impressive winter offerings was a special literary event – the Sami Rohr Prize Speakers Series, for which our very own MJCC was chosen as a pilot project. The event featured Dr. Jonathan Sarna, Professor of Jewish History at Brandeis University, and Chief Historian of the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia. He is best known for the acclaimed American Judaism: A History, which has been praised as being “the single best description of American Judaism during its 350 years on American soil.” Our Jewish Living and Learning programming is in full swing, having recently completed a visit by Israeli scholar in residence, Abraham Silver. Funded by the Lemsky Endowment Fund at the Memphis Jewish Federation, Mr. Silver’s workshops and seminars brought together people from across the entire community to learn about the past, present, and future of Israel. In February, we hosted a very successful Morris and Mollye Fogelman International Jewish Film Festival featuring partnerships with Indie Memphis, Facing History, and Jewish Family Service. You are all invited to the MJCC’s Annual Meeting on April 3 at 5:30pm, to vote for the new slate of MJCC Board Members and to hear about our accomplishments of the past year and where we are headed next. The meeting will begin promptly at 5:30, immediately followed by a reception in the Belz Social Hall. We are excited about the approaching summer and the ever-expanding offerings of the MJCC Summer Camp. New this year we have STEAM Camp (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and Lacrosse Camp. Back by popular demand are Rock Band, Girl Power Sports, Art, Theater, Crafts, LEGO, and the very popular Circus Camp. We continue to offer our popular Counselor-InTraining program to rising 9th and 10th graders, where teens will gain valuable leadership and employment skills that will surely help them in their future employment endeavors. Participants become role models for campers, learn to develop skills as staff members, create bonds with other teens, build community with other staff, and have a great summer experience. register online at jccmemphis .org/register

shainberg art gallery Blooming By Kathleen Stern and Carol Lybanon Opening Reception: Sun, April 3 • 2–4pm In the Gallery April 3–29
Born in 1951 and raised in Southern California, Kathleen attended the University of Chicago and Harvard Medical School. She and husband David earned their medical degrees in 1978 and spent the next thirty years in New York, where they raised their family. Kathleen practiced ophthalmology in Manhattan, on staff at New York Hospital and Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital. She retired from medicine in 2008 to pursue a life-long dream: learning to paint. Since moving to Memphis in 2011, she has been fortunate to find generous, talented teachers and colleagues who have inspired her and nourished her passion. In particular, she is grateful for the guidance of Marilyn Wanamaker, Pam Hassler, Zoe Nadel and Anne Enochs; their influences are visible in these works. Kathleen’s work is dedicated to her family, who have been unfailingly supportive throughout this journey. Her husband David is her patron and biggest fan, constantly pushing her beyond her comfort zone. Their son Eric, his wife Kathleen and adorable daughter Addie (the inspiration for the theme “Blooming”) are sources of immense joy and pride. Eric’s brother Alan passed in 2008 but continues to be a strong influence on everyone who knew him. Kathleen is grateful to her friends and family members who have encouraged her to bring her work to a wider audience. She extends thanks to Amy Israel and the members of JCC for their generosity in welcoming her in this beautiful space. Carol Lybanon has been working in stained glass for 20 years. She began by designing religious pieces and advanced to executing the work herself. Carol has exhibited her work in juried art shows and at synagogues, Jewish Community Centers, museums, and shows in several cities. Her work has been featured in fund-raisers, and she has been commissioned to design and create presentation pieces. All of her designs are original and are handmade by the artist. Carol makes Judaic pieces and abstract pieces. The latter incorporate rocks, minerals, and fossils along with the stained glass. This is her way to combine two of her passions: stained glass and rockhounding. Each time a design is made it varies in color and texture. Stained glass affords the artist the opportunity to make each piece unique. Carol and her husband retired and moved to Memphis 13 years ago. She continues refining her technique, and creating and executing new designs. Carol’s stained glass designs are in private collections across the country. Original stained glass work like hers is designed to decorate homes.

wellness Wellness Staff Spotlight: Andrew Dreve My name is Andrew Dreve. I am 35 years old and have been a certified personal trainer for almost 12 years. I have been involved with sports/ physical activities since I was a kid. I attended Christian Brothers High School, where I played varsity soccer and graduated in 1998. After a brief stint playing college soccer at Centre College in Danville, KY, I returned to Memphis to finish up school at the University of Memphis. It was during my final year of school when I got a parttime job overseeing the floor at a small gym. While I was working there, I discovered that I wanted to become a personal trainer. This part-time job, and my desire to learn more about my own fitness, led to a career. Over the next 11 years, I attained an array of skills and knowledge that allow me to help people reach their fitness goals.
Personal Trainers are available! First–time buyers get 3 one-hour sessions for just $99! Contact Fitness Director Stephanie Johnson at sjohnson@jccmemphis.org to be set up with a Personal Trainer.
Through specific research–based curriculum, challengers will engage in new exercises each session that help them learn to enjoy fitness, test their limits, and “level up!” Each participant is allowed to test to level up after 12 workouts, and is invited to continue in classes for free after testing to the black band level. Also, parents can join their young challengers for our Sunday workouts!
