a letter from our chairman Dear Members, It has been an honor and my pleasure these past two years being Chair of the Board of the Memphis Jewish Community Center. I have had the opportunity of leading a vibrant organization born over 68 years ago with its main goal, “Connecting, Engaging and Strengthening Jewish Memphis” as stated in our Mission Statement. Thank you to Larry Skolnick and his excellent team of innovative staff, as well to the many volunteers who have served on various committees during my tenure. Our MJCC continues to be a gathering place of our diverse Jewish community, and I look forward to being a part of its continued success. At the MJCC’s Annual Meeting on Sunday, April 2 at 4:30pm, I will pass the gavel to the incoming Chair, Elise Jordan. A native Memphian and the current Executive Vice President and CFO for FedEx Express, Elise spent her early years growing up at the MJCC and has since watched her children do the same. As an officer on the Board of Directors, Elise has served in almost every vice-chair capacity before rising to the position of Chair-elect. We are very excited that Elise has accepted the nomination to become our next Chair of the Board. Please join us at this meeting to vote for the new slate of MJCC Board Members, hear a recap of our accomplishments and what the future holds for the MJCC. The meeting will begin promptly at 4:30pm in the Belz Social Hall followed by a reception. MJCC Summer Camp registration is now open for ages 3 through 10th grade. This summer we are introducing FUN FRIDAY’S for traditional campers where one week our campers will “travel around the world” and each Friday thereafter will be experiencing something new. Other new camp programs this year are: Fun and Fabrics, J Ninja Warrior, Aikido, Advanced LEGO®, and Puppetry. Returning this summer are STEAM, LEGO®, Circus Camp, Chess, Theatre, Rock, and Sports camps. To learn more about camp and to register, get a copy of the brochure at the Member Service Desk or view it online at jccmemphis.org/camp August registration in the Early Childhood Center is filling up quickly. Please encourage your friends and family to call the ECC at (901) 761-0810 to explore enrollment in our state-of-the art classrooms or any of our programs. Thank you to members, staff, and volunteers who make the MJCC a place for everyone. I look forward to seeing you soon! B’Shalom,
Gary Makowsky

to our Volunteers! April is National Volunteer Month! Our JFS Volunteers help our community by delivering Kosher meals & pantry staples, driving people to/from surgery, taking our elders to doctor’s appointments, listening to our seniors, assisting with Jewish programing at senior facilities, taking people to the grocery store, assisting with minor house repairs, rocking babies in the ECC and teaching seniors how to connect to the digital world.
