a letter from our chairman Dear Members, Walk into the MJCC on Friday mornings and you will see 16 infants and 180+ preschool children enjoying Kabbalat Shabbat in our lobby. Walk almost anywhere in and around the MJCC during the Summer and you will find more than 300 children swimming and playing at our day camp. On Wednesdays, peek into our social hall to see at least 20 senior adults in exercise class. All of these are wonderful programs serving our many members, but there is a hidden gem at our Center which isn’t in the limelight as much as our Early Childhood, Day Camp or Senior Adults departments but serves a growing segment of our Jewish community. In January of 2015, Jewish Family Services became a department of our MJCC and began serving the most vulnerable members of our community – our senior population, those with special needs Jewish families in crisis, Jewish families living in poverty as well as homeless Jews in Memphis. JFS provides an array of social services such as Shalom Taxi, Friendly Visitors, Home-Delivery Meals, Counseling, Intake and Referral Case Management, Emergency Assistance, Kosher Food Pantry, Special Needs Programing, Classes and Support Groups and a connection to additional services needed through collaborative relationship with their clients to enhance their well-being and help them strive. The staff approaches their mission with the highest level of responsibility, professionalism and integrity. Just a few highlights: The MJCC Kosher meals program for elderly seniors addresses these needs by providing an onsite Kosher MIFA congregate meal site, the only kosher meal option available in the greater Memphis area, and one of the only congregate meal sites in this immediate vicinity. Through our home meals delivery program, we served 4,214 meals to 41 people in 2015. Through September of 2016, over 5,725 meals have been served to 44 people. We have delivered 149 bags of non-perishable food to 32 people from our Kosher Food pantry, which only opened in January of this year. The Shalom Taxi program provides homebound seniors and disabled community members with rides and door-todoor assistance for doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, errands, and to social events and gatherings as well. This year we have provided over 1900 one ways trips. Our Special Needs program offers an array of services/programming for children and adults, as well as their families and caregivers. In 2015, 103 persons and caregivers were served and through the end of September this year 110 people were assisted. Through our Emergency Financial assistance, we aided 24 individuals and families in 2015 and in 2016 we have helped 16 through September 2016. Good work helping others continue to be a meaningful part of JFS at the MJCC. If you or someone you know can benefit from any of our services, please reach out to JFS at (901) 767-8511. I look forward to seeing you soon! B’Shalom,

J.J. Goldberg–Tobin Israel Debate Mon, Jan 9 at 7pm • $10 fee/$7m • #3927
Left vs. Right
The Battle for Israel's Soul A conversation on Israel between two accomplished friends from opposite sides of the political spectrum. Is Israel locked in a tragic dispute between two peoples claiming the same land or a global conflict between Western democracy and Islamist terrorism? Is partition into two states the only way to ensure Israel’s survival or is it the surest path to ever-increasing bloodshed and possibly even endangering Israel’s survival? Through these questions and others, Tobin and Goldberg will demonstrate intelligent and principled disagreement drawn from shared values and a love for Israel.
knowing that the answers are likely to inspire, educate, and entertain us beyond anything we can imagine as we draft them. You can answer these questions and grow from the answers of others via MJCC’s social media and website, or by submitting your response to Rabbi Harris. Upcoming Questions: Jan: Who’s your personal Jewish hero? Why? Feb: What’s your favorite Jewish food? When did you first try it? Mar: What’s the best Jewish joke you know? What about it makes it so good?

Pointe Prep
Age 3–5 • Grades Pre-K–JK
Ages 11–18 • Grades 5–12
Students will love to engage their sense of play and imagination, and creative, improvisational experiences are always a part of class. This class provides students with strong and supportive preliminary skills and abilities that prepare them for Ballet II. If your child is a 3 year old that has not taken any dance class before they may be required to take one semester of Movers & Shakers before joining this Level I dance class.
This class is taken in conjunction with Ballet V. Specific strength and conditioning exercises and barre work are completed each class to develop the ability to go onto pointe. Please note this class is a conditioning class only; therefore, dancers will not create a performance piece for the end of year recital. Dancers will only advance to pointe after an evaluation by the instructor and a consultation between the dancer, dancer's parents, the instructor, and the dance school director. New students: please call for placement. Tue 5:30–6:45pm | 1/10–5/2 | $270 fee/$215m | 3839
Thu 3:30–4:15pm | 1/12–5/7 | $375 fee/$300m | 3833
Ballet II Ages 5–7 • Grades K–1 A more traditional ballet class, gently incorporating discipline with a class structure of warm-ups and very basic barre and center work. Wed 4:30–5:30pm | 1/11–5/7 | $375 fee/$300m | 3834
Ballet III Introduces the structure of the beginning ballet class, but more is expected from the students as their attention span and physical strength develop. Students will learn more about turn-out and correct body placement. The length and difficulty of barre work will increase throughout the semester, and center work will become more complicated.
