a letter from our board chair Dear Members, I’m so excited to be writing to you as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Memphis Jewish Community Center. My sincere hope and goal as Chair is that we continue to strengthen all aspects of programming and operations while continuing also to imbue the spirit of community and belonging among all Jewish Memphians at the MJCC. Being a leader at the MJCC is an honor and a privilege for me, and in accepting this responsibility, I am committed to doing all that I can to ensure that the MJCC’s role as the center of Jewish life in Memphis and the living room of our Jewish Community is strengthened and enhanced. I pledge to continue the successful efforts of my recent predecessors in leading the MJCC with phenomenal programming, transparency, broadening community engagement and participation, and ensuring the financial strength and health of the MJCC. For those of you who know me well know that I am most comfortable when the future is perfectly planned…in fact, I spend much of my working time planning the future of FedEx. Therefore one of my primary goals coming into this position is to help plan for our future at the MJCC. Working in partnership with the staff and other lay volunteers, I have begun focusing on a comprehensive strategic planning process for the MJCC. I have appointed a task force to work on a 3-5 year plan and am thrilled to announce that Susan Chase, a past Chair of the MJCC Board of Directors, is chairing this task force. You will all certainly hear much more about this effort. Thank you again for entrusting me with the leadership of the MJCC as your 35th Chair. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to seeing you all soon. B’Shalom,
Elise Jordan register online at jccmemphis .org/register

jewish living & learning CJLL Community Voices Initiative Jewish text study has always been rooted in the Chavruta model – an interactive study between a pair of students who analyze, discuss and debate. To serve our mission faithfully, the CJLL also requires a Chavruta – a role we turn over to our members. The CJLL Community Voices Initiative is but one conscious forum for us to hear and grow from each of you.
Running Dialogue Running Dialogue is a monthly talk back initiative where we solicit answers from our community to seemingly simple questions knowing that the answers are likely to inspire, educate and entertain us beyond anything we can imagine as we draft them.
Upcoming Questions: Jul: Who is an unsung Memphis Jewish all-star and why? Aug: At which Mitzvah do you personally excel? Sep: What is your favorite Jewish charity?
CJLL Shabbat & Holiday Programs Early To Bed (ETB) Shabbat Dinners Jun 16, Jul 7, and Aug 4 These kid-friendly and cost effective dinners (catered by Holy Cow) are designed to bring our diverse MJCC community together for a preShabbat ‘Shabbat dinner’ during those late summer nights. All the trappings of a traditional Shabbat dinner completed in one hour, so you can get your kids to bed before the sun goes down.

Ahavat Achim Challenge | אתגר אהבת אחים Jul 11–Aug 1, and Aug 7 During the Three Weeks (a period of mourning recalling the destruction of the Jewish Temples which our Rabbis teach was a consequence of needless Jewish infighting) the MJCC Ahavat Achim (Brotherly Love) Challenge seeks to build bridges, strengthen existing bonds, and make a bold statement of our mutual caring and interdependence. We encourage all our members to make a special effort during this time to perform unprompted deeds of kindness toward one another, and in particular, on behalf of others who inhabit different social circles and demographics. Apply your creativity to enhance feelings of appreciation, warmth, and interconnectedness among our diverse community. Together, we will ensure that this period of mournful introspection serves as the catalyst for a happier tomorrow. A comment box will be available at the fitness desk outside Rabbi Mordechai’s office for you to share stories with the rest of our community. On an agency level, we challenge area Jewish organizations to participate in a Secret Agency Gift Exchange (SAGE). Community SAGE's will draw names (distributed at the beginning of the Three Weeks), and perform kindness toward their designated organization throughout the Three Weeks (with a firm spending limit of $100). We will publicly reveal the Secret Agencies and share their contributions on Tu B’Av – the Jewish holiday of love and rebirth – which falls on August 7th.
Elul Enrichment Wed, Aug 23–Sep 20 The Jewish month of Elul (which precedes Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur) functions as a traditional time of personal reflection and selfimprovement. We seek to increase our Jewish learning, strengthen our ritual practice, and improve our human character and relationships. Throughout the month of Elul, Rabbi Harris will offer a daily guide with suggestions for enrichment. (Available in print at the MJCC as well as on our website.)

Wellness Staff Spotlight Kyle Jackson, Personal Trainer Since November of 2016, I have had the honor of being a part of the fitness staff at the MJCC. In conjunction to working part-time at the center, I am pursuing a MS in health promotion at the University of Memphis. Since 2013, I have been a Certified Personal Trainer, with my first certification coming from AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) and my recent re-certification coming from ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine). Over the last handful of years, I have had the privileged opportunity to gain experience in the field of health and wellness, this coming from 4+ years of part-time employment at the YMCA and an internship at a local corporate/work-site wellness facility. During my short time at the MJCC, I have embraced and appreciated the warm, welcoming, and family-oriented environment.
Simone Lima, Pilates instructor Originally from Brazil, Simone Lima began her exploration for rehab in college, she graduated in Occupational Therapy in 1999 and found in Pilates an opportunity to enhance her knowledge in working with physical and neurological disabilities. She is certified through Physicalmind Institute-NY and has been working with Pilates for 17 years. Her certification focus in rehab, postural alignment and body awareness. She has also a Master’s Degree in Special Education and an additional post degree in Sports Science. She is fluent in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
Derek Bolton, Personal Trainer I have been a part of the MJCC staff since November of 2016, during which time I obtained my personal training certification the following December. I graduated from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas with a degree in Exercise Science in May 2016. My original plans were to go to physical therapy school, but with the competition in that field being so high, I decided to take a different route. I decided to go for my personal training certification. Since then, personal training has been an extremely rewarding experience where I can get to know people, demonstrate and share the best ways to work out, and to stay healthy. I love helping people of all ages and being a knowledgeable resource to those who want to exercise and set goals. I am here to get to know and help everybody to the best of my abilities. register online at jccmemphis .org/register

Universal Language Room with Jason Caplan
The Universal Language Room is an interactive and community experience through improvisational music. The goal is an instant sense of unity and inclusion among participants. The experience is led by a trained facilitator who demonstrates the basics of music improvisation with drums and simple melodic instruments. Participants play in time, and improvise with each other, culminating in a song played by the entire group. The joy of music and community is actualized within an hour's time, and participants have a strong sense of belonging and overall well-being. Participants are invited to bring their own instruments or use one of the percussion instruments provided. Sun 11:00-12:00pm | 7/9–30 | $50 fee/$40m | 4330 Sun 11:00-12:00pm | 8/6–27 | $50 fee/$40m | 4331

shainberg art gallery Pat Zeitlin
Opening Reception: Thursday, August 3 from 5:30–7:30pm In the gallery August 1–29 Pat Zeitlin is inspired by the interplay of color, deep emotions, and feelings they invoke. She began studying 26 years ago with Farhana Hussein of the College of Art. With Farhana, she learned drawing and the use of color pencils, water color, and gouache. She then learned oils with Marilyn Wanamaker. Shortly thereafter, she perfected oils, glazing and color theory with Nancy Cheairs. Most recently, Pat did a workshop with David Kessler. This workshop covered the use of acrylics and abstract technique which brought out the freedom and spontaneity Pat now enjoys in her work. Pat currently lives in Memphis with her husband, Irving, and their dog, Deuce! She paints in her studio – which was built in their back yard 10 years ago.
