a letter from our chairman Dear Members, I can’t believe summer has passed and we are moving into fall already. Looking back, we had a great time cooling off at the Outdoor Water Park, especially during Summer Nights at the J! And, if you were around the MJCC during the weekdays, it was easy to tell from the smile on every camper’s face that good times were had and fond memories were made as new and old friends experienced summer camp together. Now, as we approach the High Holidays, I want to wish each of you L’Shanah Tova and hope you have an easy and meaningful High Holiday season. Please check out our holiday closure schedule on the next page. This fall we kick off our fourth Jewish Literary and Cultural Arts Festival. Beginning Tuesday, November 1, and running through Saturday, November 19, we will have a variety of interesting and dynamic well-known authors and one traveling exhibit including Jonathan Safran Foer, Rabbi Susan Silverman, and many more. For mothers, we have an extraordinary “Mom’s Night Out” with Alicia Ybarbo and Mary Ann Zoellner. Festival details are on pages 18 and 19. Be sure to join us in the fitness center to try our new 30 minute high intensity workout class J-Fit with Kate. This class is geared to improve your ability to perform everyday activities. You can find more information about this fitness program on page 14. Rabbi Mordechai Harris is now heading up Jewish Living and Learning for the MJCC. This fall he will be scheduling programs on Jewish topics and themes. Watch for information on his innovative programs. We have our exciting Camp 365 School’s Out program this fall where your children will have a place to hang out and have fun when school is not in session. Checkout the calendar on page 5 for the Veteran’s Day, Fall Break, and Winter Break dates. Register soon to guarantee your child has a spot. We have teamed up with the Junior Grizzlies Basketball program for our youth to have the best of the best youth sports program. There will be a winter/spring league for Jr. Kindergarten through grade 4, and a fall/ winter league for grades 5-12. You can find more information on pages 22 and 23. If there is something we can do to make your membership more meaningful, please let us know. I look forward to seeing you soon! B’Shalom,

Wed, Nov 14 • 7:30pm • $15 Non-Members / $12 Members The Lost Book of Moses: The Hunt for the World’s Oldest Bible Tigay is an award-winning journalist and in his book, The Lost Book of Moses: The Hunt for the World's Oldest Bible, Tigay tells the story of Moses Wilhelm Shapira. In the summer of 1883, Shapira claimed to have discovered the world's oldest bible scroll. When news of the discovery leaked to the excited English press, Shapira became a household name. But before the British Museum could acquire them, Shapira's nemesis, Charles Clermont-Ganneau, denounced his find as a fraud. Humiliated, Shapira fled the country. Six months later he was dead. The globetrotting hunt that follows vibrates with the suspense of a classic detective tale.

shainberg art gallery “Jews of Color: A Renaissance” presented by Scattered Among the Nations
In the gallery November 1–30 Artist Talk: Sunday, November 6 • 3:00pm (more info on page 18) “Jews of Color: A Renaissance” is the latest project by Scattered Among the Nations to educate about Jewish diversity, profiling some of the world’s most isolated and dynamic communities. Scattered Among the Nations assists geographically and politically isolated Jewish or Judaismpracticing communities to overcome adversity and to continue embracing the Jewish religion and culture. Scattered Among the Nations has helped the Peru’s Inca Jews, India’s Benei Menashe, Ghana’s House of Israel, and Nigeria’s Ibgo Jewish community, and expects also to provide support to Uganda’s Abayudaya. SAN endeavors to embrace the highest level of tzedakah in the Maimonedean ladder of giving — to help communities strengthen themselves. The new Renaissance project features 10 large (each about 25-30 sq. feet) canvasses by Oakland, California painter Sam Renaissance, paired with the Scattered Among the Nations photographs that inspired them. Each takes a fresh approach to the question of diversity, in brilliant colors, with the urban modern style that has grown his reputation from the Bay Area to New York – his original home. Mr. Renaissance, who himself is African-American and not Jewish, was captivated by the photographs’ challenge to stereotypes both of Jews and of communities of color, and hopes the exhibit will create a new paradigm in art and in people’s thinking about religion and race.
Jin and John Powell In the gallery December 5–January 6 A trained figurative artist, Jin Powell's work integrates transitional techniques with boundless modern thought in a mixed-media format. Each work projects the true feminine experience with elegance, a beauty that seems illusory, a surreal emotion. Each work is imbued with a sense of movement, capturing the heart with a smile. John Powell's art is a mirror of his thoughts – a reflection and outward manifestation of his physical and psychological journey. "Whether I'm working with wood, metals, or stone, and regardless of the nature of the experience, I end with something of beauty that captures a part of my being – my unpredictable life."

MJCC Youth Basketball League Player Evaluation Please make every attempt to have your child at all evaluations. All children not at evaluations will be selected last in the draft and will be randomly drawn, not able to be selected by coaches. The purpose of evaluations is to attempt to create a division of teams with parity, to ensure that every team competes on a level playing field. Parity is not always achievable, due to absences at evaluations, poor effort at evaluations, and bias in the evaluation process by evaluators. To ensure parity, bias must be eliminated. Participants will be evaluated on their ability to shoot, dribble, pass, and their knowledge, potential, and basketball IQ, as well as how they perform in scrimmages. Player Evaluation Dates:
Ages 10–14 Sun • 1:30–2:30pm • Tue 5:30–6:30pm 10/30–11/1 | 3699
