a letter from our board chair Dear Members, It seems like Summer just began and with the weather cooling we are definitely moving into Fall. We had a great time this Summer at the Outdoor Water Park, especially during Summer Nights at the J! And, when you were around the MJCC during the weekdays, it was easy to see the smile on every camper’s face that good times were had and fond memories were made as new and old friend’s experienced Summer Camp together. As we approach the High Holidays, I want to wish each of you L’Shanah Tova and hope you have an easy and meaningful High Holiday season. Please check out our holiday closure schedule on the next page. It was a captivating evening at the 2017 Annual Gala featuring Joshua Nelson, The Prince of Kosher Gospel. We enjoyed a reception with delicious desserts and great conversations; and an evening of engaging entertainment by Joshua Nelson. Funds raised support scholarships, programs and services. Thank you to everyone for your continual support of our MJCC. This Fall, we kick off our fifth annual Jewish Literary and Cultural Arts Festival. Beginning Thursday, November 2, and running through Sunday, November 19, we will have interesting and dynamic wellknown authors and one children’s book/family event including Laura Gehl, Memphis’ Tova Mirvis, and many more. New this Festival is a Mandal Art Workshop taught by Paige Scheinberg. Festival details are on pages 18–19. Be sure to join us in the fitness center to try our two new 30 minute cage classes (HIIT Boxing and 10 Rounds). These classes are fun and geared to improve your ability to perform everyday activities. You can find more information about these and other fitness programs on pages 12–13. This Summer, the MJCC upgraded 14 pieces of fitness equipment. Your comments from testing these demos helped select the best equipment for our members. 3rd Place Lounge at the J presents a Murder Mystery Dinner Saturday, December 9. It is a member’s only event. We love to have guests, but tonight is just for members. Reserve your ticket or purchase a table by visiting jccmemphis.org/3rdplacelounge or calling (901) 761-0810. We have teamed up with the Junior Grizzlies Basketball program for our youth to have the best of the best youth sports program. There will be a Winter/Spring league for Jr. Kindergarten through grade 4, and a Fall/ Winter league for grades 5-12. Learn more on pages 14–15. I look forward to seeing you at the MJCC! B’Shalom,

CJLL Israeli in Residence Series The Israeli in Residence Series seeks to bridge our diaspora community with Israel through making real human connections with diverse and talented Israeli personalities. It is made possible by a grant from the Lemsky Endowment Fund through Jewish Community Partners.

Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger Israeli Scholar in Residence November 26–December 3 Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger embodies the uncommon combination of a devout Orthodox rabbi and teacher, a passionate Zionist and settler, a religious pluralist and interfaith advocate, and a leading grassroots Israeli peace activist.

Presently, Rabbi Schlesinger divides his time between Israel and the USA, primarily in Dallas, Texas. Previously, he served as the head of the community

The vast majority of his time is spent in Israel, where Rav Hanan serves as the director of international relations for Roots/Shorashim/ Judur, a grassroots peace initiative between Jews and Palestinians living in the West Bank. Rabbi Schlesinger is a member of the Rabbinical Council of America and the International Rabbinic Fellowship, as well as Beit Hillel, an Israeli rabbinical association. jewish living & learning Sam Weinman is the Digital Editor of www.GolfDigest.com, where, during his tenure, the website has grown to boast the largest digital audience in golf and has been nominated for several National Magazine Awards. Prior to that, he was the lead hockey and golf writer for The Journal News and LoHud.com, during which time he launched the popular hockey blog, “Rangers Report.” He is the recipient of several national writing awards for his coverage of the PGA Tour and the National Hockey League.

Boxers condition for optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, balance, hand-eye coordination, footwork, and overall strength. At Rock Steady the opponent is Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s causes a loss in many of the same elements that boxers condition to improve. Published medical research has shown that forced, intense exercise can reduce, reverse, and delay Parkinson’s symptoms

Fitness Staff Spotlight:

Peter Guoba "Gooba" I'm delighted to introduce myself as your new Fitness Manager! Before becoming a fitness manager I was a NCAA division one football player and exercise science major. After receiving my degree I worked for over 10 years in the fitness industry for companies like Planet Fitness, L. A. Fitness, and UFC GYM. Outside of work I was able to compete as an MMA fighter before retiring as an undefeated heavy weight fighter. On a personal note, my wife and I became parents to a beautiful little girl. As your new Fitness Manager, I will dedicate myself to developing new classes and hope to deliver the best experience for our members yet. This month, look for Rock Steady Boxing, a class for those conquering Parkinson's, and MoveStrong. follow us on facebook at www.facebook.com/memphisjcc

shainberg art gallery Jigsaw

Opening Reception: Wednesday, November 1 from 5:30-7:30pm In the gallery November 1–29 Please join us for this very special curated exhibition featuring the work of many local artists. The participating artists have created exceptional pieces inspired by the poem, “Jigsaw” by Rabbi Lawrence Kushner: Each lifetime is the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. For some there are more pieces. For others the puzzle is more difficult to assemble. Some seem to be born with a nearly completed puzzle. And so it goes. Souls go this way and that. Trying to assemble the myriad parts. But know this. No one has within themselves All the pieces to their puzzle. Everyone carries with them at least one and probably many pieces to someone else's puzzle. Sometimes they know it. Sometimes they don't. And when you present your piece to another, whether you know it or not, whether they know it or not, you are a messenger from the Most High.

Artist's Link

Opening Reception: Thursday, December 7 from 5:30-7:30pm In the gallery Dec 2–29 Artists’ Link began as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization in 1989. Organized for and by visual artists in the Memphis area, we currently have over 110 members representing approximately 20 mediums. Our mission is to be a resource and support group for artists by providing fellowship and sharing of art information. We also exist to provide a way for artists to link to the community. We hold monthly program/meetings which are open to the public. Our activities include field trips, critiques by local professionals, and planned art activities in local parks and museums around the Memphis area. Artists’ Link has supported the Brooks Museum League’s National Merit Scholarship Awards and Exhibition in 2014. Since 2011 Artists’ Link has co-sponsored the annual “Incognito” fund-raiser, to support educational programs at the Memphis Botanic Garden. Our members are frequent contributors to worthy causes by donating their time and/or artwork. follow us on facebook at www.facebook.com/memphisjcc
