Stephens: Muslims, Mormons and Liberals By BRET STEPHENS

Why is it OK to mock one religion but not another?

“H

What does the phrase mean? I can’t speech to a Muslim world that could stand hearing such a defense. tell you, because it’s unprintable in a family newspaper. After the debut of “The Book of Mormon” musical, the Church of On the other hand, if you can afford to shell out several hundred Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints responded with this statement: bucks for a seat, then you can watch a Mormon missionary get his “The production may attempt to entertain audiences for an evening holy book stuffed – well, I can’t tell you about that, either. Let’s just but the Book of Mormon as a volume of scripture will change say it has New York City audiences roaring with laughter. people’s lives forever by bringing them closer to Christ.” The “Book of Mormon” – a performance of which Hillary That was it. The People’s Front for the Liberation of Provo Clinton attended last year, without registering a complaint – comes to will not be gunning for a theater near you. Is it asking too much mind as the administration falls over itself denouncing “Innocence of of religious and political leaders in Muslim communities to adopt Muslims.” This is a film that may or may not exist; whose makers are a similar attitude? likely not who they say they are; whose actors claim to have known It needn’t be. A principled defense of free speech could start neither the plot nor purpose of the film; and which has never been seen by quoting the Quran: “And it has already come down to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah [recited], they are by any member of the public except as a video clip on the Internet. No matter. The film, the administration says, is “hateful and denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they offensive” (Susan Rice), “reprehensible and disgusting” (Jay Carney) enter into another conversation.” In this light, the true test of and, in a twist, “disgusting and reprehensible” (Hillary Clinton). Mr. religious conviction is indifference, not susceptibility, to mockery. Carney, the White House spokesman, also lays sole blame on the film The defense could add that a great religion surely cannot be for inciting the riots that have swept the Muslim world and claimed goaded into frenetic mob violence on the slimmest provocation. the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three of his staff in Libya. Yet to watch the images coming out of Benghazi, Cairo, Tunis and So let’s get this straight: In the consensus view of modern Sana’a is to witness some significant portion of a civilization being American liberalism, it is hilarious to mock Mormons and transformed into Travis Bickle, the character Robert De Niro made Mormonism but outrageous to mock Muslims and Islam. Why? unforgettable in Taxi Driver. “You talkin’ to me?” Maybe it’s because nobody has ever been harmed, much less A defense would also point out that an Islamic world that killed, making fun of Mormons. insists on a measure of religious respect needs also to offer that Here’s what else we learned this week about the emerging respect in turn. When Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi – the closest thing liberal consensus: That it’s okay to denounce a movie you haven’t Sunni Islam has to a pope – praises Hitler for exacting “divine seen, which is like trashing a book you haven’t read. So far, an attempt to mollify rampaging Islamists. That it’s okay to the Obama administration’s approach to free speech is that it’s fine concede the fundamentalist premise that religious belief ought to so long as it’s cheap and exacts no political price. President Obama came to office promising that he would start a new conversation with the Muslim world, one that lectured less and listened more. After nearly four years of listening, we can now hear more clearly where the U.S. stands in the estimation of that world: equally despised but considerably less feared. Just imagine what four more years of instinctive deference will do. On the bright side, dear liberals, you’ll still be able to mock Mormons. They tend not to punch back, which is part of what makes so many of them so successful in life. Reprinted from WSJ. Bret Stephens will be speaking at the MJCC on Sunday, October 14th.

What Israelis Can Learn from American Thanksgiving By GIL TROY

N

ext month, Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving – a great American invention. As Americans from coast to coast sit down and dig in, eating their turkey and stuffing, their cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, Israelis should contemplate the holiday’s broadmindedness. This is the all-American day, when blacks and whites, Jews and non-Jews, immigrants and natives, act in concert, bonding as one nation. Thanksgiving’s magic lies in each individual’s memory. For me, Thanksgiving is about schlepping into a cold, windy Manhattan with my parents to see Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade – shivering from the cold and with delight, while watching supersized-balloons of Superman and Underdog waft down Broadway. It’s about defrosting in the apartment of my Aunt Jennie and Uncle Lenny, clambering around with my brothers as the grownups crowd around a table extending the length of their Bronx apartment. It’s about braving the Wednesday before Thanksgiving as a college student, sitting on the highway from Boston to New York, as millions rush to make it for the command performance which is the Thanksgiving meal. It’s about the sweet smell of American success as we gather around successively larger dining room tables in my l ’ i l ifi t h

6

Thanksgiving’s charms evoke the many, magical communal moments punctuating Israel’s calendar. There is a national magic and grandeur to Rosh Hashanah’s mass joy and massive heartburn, Yom Kippur’s stillness and piousness, Chanukkah’s lights and lightheartedness, Purim’s costumes and chaos, Passover’s cleaning and cuisine, Yom HaShoah’s sorrow and solemnity, Yom HaZikaron’s sadness and supportiveness, Yom Ha’atzmaut’s Ha’atzmaut’s bliss and barbecues. But none of these fabulous festivals which enrich Israeli life involve all Israelis. Twenty percent of the population, the Arab twenty percent, takes the days off but few Israeli-Arabs partake in these national celebrations. The absence of 20 percent of the population does not invalidate these national festivals. The majority culture in a democracy can mount mass celebrations enacting majority rituals and expressing majority ideals. But it would be great if the Arab sector embraced Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, or another holy day, perhaps making the Yitzhak Rabin’s memorial day a day for uniting all Israelis. American Thanksgiving should inspire Israelis to nurture more national rallying i t l b di t

Shoah-Holocaust 3Perspectives Sonia Reich Elie Wiesel Hannah Stern

Until February 15, 2001, Howard Reich’s mother, Sonia, had managed to keep from her son almost everything about her experience of the Holocaust. That night, she packed some clothes and fled her house in Skokie, Illinois, convinced that someone was trying to kill her. This was the first indication that she was suffering from late-onset Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a condition more often associated with veterans returning from combat or others not far removed from traumatic events. For Howard, it was also the opening of a window onto his mother’s past.

A documentary chronicling the adolescent years of Elie Wiesel and his “long trip”, the history of his sufferings. In a remote corner of one-time Hungary, in the shadow of the Carpathian mountains, Eliezer was fifteen when Fascism brutally altered his life forever. Fifty years later, he returns to the town where he was born to walk the painful road of remembrance – but is it possible to speak of the unspeakable? Or does Auschwitz lie beyond the capacity of any human language – the place where words and stories run out?

8

Sixteen year old Hanna Stern (Kirsten Dunst) was a typical American teenager who ignored her family’s heritage until a mystical Passover seder takes her back in time to German-occupied Poland on an emotional journey of life, death and survival. Transported to a dank, cold, concentration camp, she experiences the horrors of the holocaust and for the first time understands the grim reality of her people’s fate. Fighting for survival, she keeps everyone’s spirits up by entertaining them with stories of the future, but she soon must face a terrible sacrifice.

adults The Nathan and Dorothy Shainberg Art Gallery features Lost and Found – Artwork by Hallie Salky Charney and Lisa Jo Perdue November 4 – November 27 Opening Reception: November 4 from 2-4 PM Hallie and Lisa Jo each operate as scavengers, finding, collecting and sorting their objects that they present in different ways, yet each creating a narrative of a time past, a moment that is long gone, a well used tool now discarded. Something lost or found in attics, in the woods, in an old box…. Hallie Salky Charney studied art at University of Tennessee at Knoxville where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree followed by a Masters of Fine Art degree in Printmaking & Photography from the University of Memphis. Hallie has taught photography at Rhodes College and the University of Memphis. Her current body of work involves combining different mediums of photography, encaustic wax, and painting. Lisa Jo Perdue studied art at the University of Memphis where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Graphic Design. Lisa Jo worked as a graphic designer for many years in Memphis. Her current body of work combines old photographs and found objects to create narrative memories.

staff highlight Christen Skinner

Assistant Wellness Director

The MJCC is proud to announce a new addition to our staff; Christen Skinner recently assumed the role of Wellness Assistant Director. Christen had been teaching and training here at the MJCC for two years prior to taking her new position. As part of her work at the MJCC, she will work closely with Lauren Carr, Wellness Director, to ensure that we are utilizing our state-of-the-art facilities and offering top notch wellness programs and classes. Christen is a certified Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, Running and Cycling coach. She is also an AFAA Exercise Specialist and a FiTour Fitness Presenter. She is best known for her creativity and common sense approach to teaching and coaching. Within the fitness industry Christen is recognized for her down to earth approach to exercise. Christen is originally from Memphis where she grew up with a dance and athletic background before moving into the world of fitness. She has studied exercise science to participate in the professional field of fitness. She finds her inspiration from all around – but she explains that her husband, Wayne, is her partner, confidant and friend and holds her accountable to her personal as well as professional goals. Christen’s philosophy is that often we need to get out of our own way to really soar in life. Exercise is one tool that can help us do that. Every day is a gift and life is an unexpected road of miracles and surprises. Let’s be in the best health that we can be so whatever life decides to throw at us, we are ready. Christen explains “I believe that we can all be healthier and more fit and I am excited to be able to help all of the members here at the MJCC achieve their own desired level of fitness.” She continues, “If you have any questions or suggestions about the Wellness department, especially group fitness, my door is always open. Please stop by and introduce yourself.” She can be reached at 901-761-0810 or cskinner@jccmemphis.org
