Whanganui Hospital The Whanganui District Health Board oversees all healthcare within our district, including maternity, mental health and addiction services, medical and surgical wards and emergency care. For patient or general enquiries, call 06 348 1234. General Practitioner (GP) For day-to-day healthcare, it is recommended you register with a GP. Most practices are currently at capacity, but some are enrolling people new to Whanganui and those with no existing local GP. After-hours Accident and Medical Care The Whanganui Accident & Medical (WAM) clinic is located in the Whanganui Hospital next to the Emergency Department and focuses on assessment and treatment of accidents and injuries, as well as providing afterhours general medical care. Open seven days, 8.00am to 9.00pm, including public holidays. No appointment is necessary. COVID-19 Testing A Community Based Assessment Centre (CBAC), is situated on the Whanganui Hospital campus in Heads Road. The CBAC is currently operating Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 3.00pm, and weekends from 8.00am to 12.00pm, with flexibility for surges.

The service is staffed by registered nurses who will assess your general health needs and give you information and advice to help you decide on the best level of care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Mental Health For support with mental health you can ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist service or if you or someone else is at risk of injury, call freephone 111. If you need someone to talk to, Lifeline is a free 24-hour support line: 0800 543 354 or www.lifeline.org.nz Dental Care There is a range of dentists in Whanganui providing treatment at your own expense. Children are entitled to free basic oral health services from birth until their 18th birthday. The Whanganui Hospital also provides a range of outpatient and inpatient oral health services on referral from a medical or dental practitioner.
