Southend SOUTHEND is a quiet cray fishing port and holiday village near Canunda National Park, 20 kms south of Beachport and 27 kms north of Millicent. The small settlement hosts one of the largest fleets of Rock Lobster fishing vessels on the Limestone Coast. The jetty is busy where the catch is unloaded and is a popular spot for fishing. There is a general store and a caravan park. It was the first seaport in the region when in 1845 Captain Underwood established a store and jetty at the southern end of Rivoli Bay to cater for settlers and passing ships. A year later the settlement was surveyed and named Grey town after Governor Grey. In 1971 it was renamed Southend. One of the anchors of the Geltwood ship is set as a memorial at the lookout on Cape Buffon drive. It honours the Geltwood and those who have perished at sea. On the 5th July 1876, the Geltwood, a three-masted hull barque, on its maiden voyage from England was tragically wrecked a mile offshore, 1.6 kms from Rivoli Bay. There were no survivors.
