EDITOR’S FOREWORD APPROACH PUBLISHING CO.LTD

Editor in Chief Gerard Mosselman Office Manager Pimwee P. (Kob) Graphic Office Thaiso Media

I need to clarify comments that have arisen from an advert in our May edition on page 13. “The WHITE List” is, as far as I am informed group of real estate companies that have created an association. Any real estate company can become a member as long as certain criteria is answered for positively. They are advertising customers of APPROACH and we are not involved in their organisation. APPROACH does not favour nor condemn any one’s advertising. APPROACH was mentioned on the bottom of the advertisement but that was a misunderstanding. Meanwhile this has been removed in our July edition. Anyway, real estate is back on track and international interest has grown. Several companies have united to cooperate and give each other a helping hand. With interesting developments growing around us. With the Thai economy strengthening and Europe recovering the future looks bright. Half a year is gone, Thailand’s tourist scenery has changed a bit. Gone are important percentages of Russian Tourist as the rubel lost strength, travel has become quite expensive for our Russian friends. At the same time the Chinese tourists have increased considerably. Bit of a shame as I met some real nice Russian people in town, which reminds of a Ruddisn I did admire for his courage and for changing world history. Mikael Gorbachov. Some of his remarkable quotes : “What we need is Star Peace and not Star Wars” and “If not me, who? and if not now, when?“ and “Political leaders still think things can be done through force, but that cannot solve terrorism. Backwardness is the breeding ground of terror, and that is what we have to fight.“ APPROACH has been pretty busy uploading a lot of local and national information on Approach Facebook. Find your favourite Events, Dinners, Brunches and Activities on our Facebook with loads coming more. We need to grow faster than Hua Hin and be our time ahead. If you are looking for adventure purely Thai, look further inside as we have some great nature challenges in mind.

Pranburi Saturday Market 200 year old walking street

Photograpy By Jack Piyapong Tel: 086 038 3293 Saranya-Studio

Being an Expat living in Hua Hin, I often feel like I am missing that mysterious “Thainess” the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is promoting in its “Discover Thainess” campaign. I am often surprised by westernized Thailand. I mean KFC Delivery? Really? It’s fair to say that I came to Thailand with stereotypes of how it would be and although I love Hua Hin I often feel like the Thailand I know is nothing like the stereotypes in my head. I recognized that it is unfair to judge a place based on my preconceived ideas. However, there are markets that attempt to satisfy tourists’ desires to see “real” Thailand, but they often fall short of expectations and feel contrived. Thankfully, this is not the case at Pranburi’s Old Market and Walking Street. One Saturday evening I enjoyed exploring Pranburi’s 200 year old market and walking street. When I arrived at the market I immediately had the impression of arriving in a Thailand that conformed to my expectations. I went with two of my Thai friends, one who frequents the market every Saturday and the other who was a first timer like me. This walking street has lots of Thai charm - from its old wooden

10

HUA HIN & BEYOND

buildings lining the street to its crooning local singers. It is open and leisurely, and an easy and pleasant walk with benches along the way. I enjoyed looking at all the vendors’ goods which included odd antiques, second-hand clothes, hand-made wears, traditional Thai dress, and even novelty old American advertisements and much more. Along the way I enjoyed a nam manao pahng and a herbal drink that looked like urine in a bag (!) but was delicious and I swear gave me a big energy boost. My Thai friends had fun showing me all the traditional Thai food. One of my favorite places on the street was an old wooden house on stilts (where the toilets are) that the owner encourages you to visit. On the street is a mock house front showing how the old teak homes would have looked not too long ago. As you walk off the street toward the wooden house you see tables set into the lush garden and a vendor selling drinks. As you move back you see an old bike set near a small fountain – a great place to take a picture which my girlfriends did. And they looked beautiful, posing in just the right way. So I tried. The result was significantly less impressive! We explored the wooden house and my Thai friends showed me traditional

cooking pots and explained what would have been prepared in them. There is also a display of an old store with a table to use. We were told that we could use the tables if we purchased something from the vendor on the street who I assume is the wife of the man (owner) we met. Their stand had some of my favorite items - painted hand-bags, hand-made hats, bird houses, lanterns and more. I wholeheartedly intend to go back with a wonderful chilled bottle of wine, purchase a small item, find a cozy table and enjoy the company of friends surrounded by beautiful gardens. This market is similar to all other markets in the fact that there is food, drink, and music. But to me it is better because it is set on a wide street lined with wooden homes the community is preserving with items to be purchased that are more unique than at other markets. Yes, it’s kitschy and quirky and old, but the walking street is relaxed, friendly, fun surrounded by traditional Thai architecture and history. This is the Thailand I had been looking for and it was a joy to find. To find the market head to Pranburi on a Saturday evening (5 PM – 9 PM) turn left at the Tesco Lotus then turn right at the intersection after Tesco. Follow that road as it veers left and park near the train station. Walk under the train tracks to the walking street.

MUSIC

HOMAGE TO JAMES LAST James Last, pictured in 2002, kept performing until several months before his death

moving swiftly on to the next.

For 50 years, James Last’s legions of loyal fans adored his joyful big band versions of pop and classical standards.

Sixty-five of his albums charted in the UK, second only to Elvis Presley.

James Last, who has died at the age of 86, was the king of the non-stop party, who had crowds dancing in the aisles for decades with his relentlessly upbeat arrangements of tunes by everyone from The Beatles to Beethoven. He reworked favourites from every genre, using orchestral instruments alongside electric guitars and drums, boiling down the arrangement and melody of each song before Last has received more than 200 gold and platinum discs His debut album was the first in his longrunning Non-Stop Dancing series, in which a couple of dozen pop hits would be given his treatment and sequenced in quick succession. He would invite people to his studio to clap, cheer and whistle in between songs - which he would add to the recordings to provide his trademark party atmosphere. And while he spent more than eight years in the UK album chart in total, he never had a hit single under his own name. Although he was best-known for re-arranging existing compositions, he also wrote original songs. Games That Lovers Play was his most popular self-penned tune and film director Quentin Tarantino used The Lonely Shepherd on the soundtrack for Kill Bill Volume 1. July 2015 APPROACH

12

It was a winning formula. Estimates put his album sales at between 50-100 million.

James Last was born Hans Last in Bremen, Germany, in 1929, to a musical family. Despite being described as totally unmusical by his first piano teacher, he was offered a place in the Army music school in Frankfurt at the age of 14. After the war, he lapped up the previously forbidden American swing and jazz music, and was voted the best jazz bass player in Germany for three years in a row. His ensembles would listen to GI radio broadcasts by day and play the music they had heard by night. He also wrote for other artists, composing Fool for Elvis Presley and Happy Heart for Andy Williams. Off stage, he was renowned for his generosity to fans and the 40-odd members of his orchestra, even building a holiday home and leisure centre for his entourage. That was the price for the global success which made him, whether you liked him or not, a musical phenomenon. Last retired from the stage after becoming seriously ill last year.

THAI NATURE

The Common Sandpiper By Dr. George Grossniklaus

The Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) is a monotypic species of the family of sandpipers (Scolopacidae), which breeds only in the Palaearctic. (The Palaearctic region, also called Palaearctic, referred in the biogeography, the “old land masses of Europe, North Africa to the southern edge of the Sahara and Asia (south to the Himalayas, so e.g. without the Indian subcontinent and the Arabian Peninsula).

Description An adult sandpiper is up to 22 centimetres tall and reaches a wingspan of up to 40 centimetres. It weighs 40 to 80 grams. The Common Sandpiper is smaller than the Green Sandpiper, and differs from this type, by the characteristic white wedge drawing under the white breast sides. There is no sexual dimorphism. The belly is white and the top is brown patterned in breeding plumage, with a fine dark brown arrowhead drawing as well as an irregular banding. In plumage the top body is uniform olive brown. The eyes are black and the relatively short legs are coloured pale yellow. He has a medium long beak, which is dark brown with a light orange-brown root, also with a dark eye stripe. The Sandpiper flies pretty fast, even and low over the water. The wing beats are fast and short and the wings are bent down. 28

The flight is usually accompanied by high-pitched call, sounding like the Hi-di-di. In flight, the brown rump, the white banded tail sides, a conspicuous white wing binding and whitish secondaries are clearly visible. Just as he can fly, he can swim and dive up to one meter deep and up to 20 seconds long. On the ground he teeters and curtsies constantly with the elongated rear body up and down.

THAI NATURE

Habitat

Nuitrition

The distribution area of Sandpipers, stretches from South and West Europe across Eurasia to Japan and the islands of Southeast Asia.

The Sandpiper feeds on insects and spiders. In addition, small crustaceans and molluscs are on the menu and are picked with its beak from the shallow water.

The Sandpiper is found in a breeding area that extends from the steppe and desert zone, on to the temperate zone to the boreal and mountain forests, almost to the snowline and the arctic tundra.

He locates its prey visually. Rarer than similar species, of the genus Tringa, which wades in shallow water, he preferably, stays on the wet shore line.

Breeding Sandpiper reach their sexual maturity in the second year of live. They lead a predominantly monogamous marriage season. There are indications that the breeding territory is designated by the female. The nest is a depression in the ground which is padded with plant parts. The trough is scratched out by both parent birds. It is built on islands or close to shore, well hidden in dense vegetation. It is usually located in a completely dry surface at a maximum of fifty meters from the water.

Its altitudinal distribution ranges from the lowlands vup to altitudes of 4,000 meters. He often lives on rivers and streams, but also still waters are used. It breeds on loosely covered river gravel banks but also in steep incised mountain rivers.

The female lays usually four, 35 mm large eggs. The eggs are relatively large and pointed top-shaped. The ground colour of skin is a pale-brownish with brown spots, and small to medium sized rusty spots. Both parents are involved in the breeding, the incubation period is 2122 days.

It prefers a firm sandy ground with a well-trained ground cover and small open gravel sites. But he is also found on loose drift wood. As a migrant it adheres to all types of inland waters. In the short term, it is also be observed on the smallest ponds and puddles. Even artificial waters such as ponds, reservoirs or lakes are used. On the sea, he uses rock and pebble shores.

The young birds can fly up from their 15th day of life and from 21 days of age they are fully airworthy. The breeding success is relatively low. Studies show, that only 24-35 percent of hatched young ones, fledge.

Stock Forecasts The Common Sandpiper as many other sandpipers’ species will be particularly affected by climate change. A research team, commissioned by the British Environment Agency and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds examined the future spread development, of breeding birds, based on climate models, assumes that until the end of the 21st century, the distribution area of the Sandpiper will shrink by about 25 percent and be shifted to the north. Top 10 most Competitive Economies in Asia - Pacific The competitiveness landscape in the Asia-Pacific region remains one of stark contrasts. According to the latest edition of the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report 2014-15, the region is home to three of the 10 most competitive economies in the world, and a further three feature in the top 20. However, at the other end of the regional spectrum, five countries rank below the 100 mark in this study of 144 economies. The Asian Tigers continue to perform strongly as measured by the report’s Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), but with the steady decline of South Korea, now 26th, the group led by Singapore is becoming a less coherent one.

Asian Competitive Economic Rankings : World rankings in (xx) 1.

Singapore (2) -with a budget surplus of 6.9% of GDP in 2013. The country has a strong focus on education and is becoming more innovative.

2.

Japan (6)- Fr the past five years, its budget deficit has been hovering around 10% of GDP, one of the highest ratios in the world, and public debt is high.

3.

Hong Kong SAR (7) - To enhance its competitiveness, Hong Kong must improve on higher education and innovation, particularly the limited availability of scientists and engineers.

4.

Taiwan (14) - To enhance its competitiveness, Taiwan will need to further strengthen its institutional framework, which is undermined by inefficiency and corruption.

5.

New Zealand ( 17) - It boasts an excellent education system, while the efficiency of its goods and labour markets is among the highest in the world.

6.

Malaysia (20) - A high budget deficit – 4.6% of GDP in 2013 – and the low level of female participation in the workforce remain challenges.

7.

Australia ( ) - As part of the Forum’s Executive Opinion Survey, Australian businesses consistently say restrictive labour regulations are the greatest hurdle to doing business there.

8.

Republic of Korea (26) - The country’s high degree of technological adoption and business sophistication are strong factors behind its remarkable capacity for innovation.

9.

China (28) - With some manufacturing jobs being lost to less-developed countries – and even to advanced economies – there is a need to create high-value jobs that will sustain rising standards of living.

10. 32

Thailand ( 31) - The level of trust in politicians is among the lowest in the world, and education is of mediocre quality. Data used was collected before the May 2014 coup. Political and policy instability, excessive red tape, pervasive corruption, security concerns and high uncertainty around property rights seriously undermine the institutional framework.

APPROACH July 2015

FINANCIAL

THAILAND became an upper-middle income economy in 2011. Notwithstanding political uncertainty and volatility since 1970, Thailand has made remarkable progress in social and economic issues, moving from a low income country to an upper-income country in less than a generation. As such, Thailand has been one of the widely cited development success stories, with sustained strong growth and impressive poverty reduction, particularly in the 1980s. As a result, economic growth in Thailand has lagged that in both low and middle income East Asian neighbouring countries in recent years. In addition, such comparatively slower growth reflects the decline in global demand for Thailand’s key exports such as hard drive disks and partly because of domestic factors

including slowdown in government spending and withdrawal of consumption stimulus measures. Growth was 0.7 percent in 2014 and is projected to rebound to 3.5 percent in 2015. A significant depreciation of the baht surely would trigger another spurt in exports and tourism and raise the inflation rate somewhat. However the central bank thinks this would be the wrong approach. Rather than try for 5% growth they are following policies that are likely to result in 2% to 3% growth while trying to convince everyone that things will be better for other reasons. No one wants to risk questioning the authority of the central bank; instead any failure to grow can always be blamed on political uncertainty.

MONEY AFFAIRS

Should you stick with that losing stock? By Jerry Mcmenamin

I

’m meeting a client whose net worth has increased rather dramatically since I met her 10 years ago. Part of that increase may have something to do with the service she receives as the only time she could see me last time we met was on New Year’s Eve at 7pm (Try and get that type of service from your investment bank). When she first came to me her only previous experience of investing had been in bank deposits and she was, she said, a very cautious investor. Five years ago she sold a property in the UK and from that sale decided to invest Stg 500,000. Being a large amount, she opted to go the cautious route with this money. Good decision at the time as a few months later everything crashed. When the crash appeared to bottomed out I got her to switch more of her portfolio to take advantage of the recovery and this is where she hugely prospered over the following years. To cut a long story short she survived the crash relatively unscathed but of course she had a couple of funds which lost badly. The question was should she stick with these hoping they will recover or sell them and invest in a better prospect?

36

APPROACH July 2015

The reluctance to do this is often brought about by the reality that buying high and selling low is a result which is the exact opposite to what an investor expects. However some investors can contemplate biting the bullet and taking the hit. Behavioral finance posits that investors behave irrationally in systematic and predictable ways because of human psychology. It says that the biggest mistake made by individual investors is to hold losers until they break even and then sell them. There are few things in life more emotionally satisfying than closing out a winning stock trade-and few things more painful than selling a loser. It goes on to say that investors are nearly twice as likely to sell winners as losers. The result is a lot of the time you end up watering your weeds and cutting your flowers. Finally the behavioral finance experts also say that investors tend to be overly optimistic about past winners and overly pessimistic about past losers. As other finance gurus say” it’s not timing the market that makes money its time in the market”. Thailandexpatfinance@yahoo.com

THAI LEGAL

Knowing The Thai Legal System Thailand laws follow the pattern of civil law countries of conventional Europe. When a dispute is brought before the judge, the court will decide a case based on an interpretation of the statutory provisions. The court’s interpretation is not as broad as that of a court in a common law country and unlike a common law court; its decision will not develop a body of law. Although, interpretations by the highest courts (Dika Court or Supreme Court) become precedent under the doctrine of stare devices.

Thailand laws derive from two major sources; the legislative and executive branches of both central and local governments. The judicial decisions are not law because they apply to an individual; not withstanding the fact that that the court will normally adhere to precedent for subsequent cases with the same situation in order to attain stability and fairness. Reversal of precedent based on decisions however does not happen very often.

Here are the most common practical legislature institutions: Constitutional Law - A constitutional based law, defines the relationship between the Government and citizens in regards to fundamental rights and responsibilities. Acts - An act is the most common known law and is made by parliament. Examples of Acts are the Copyright Act, Trademark Act and Investment promotion Act. Royal Decree - A Royal decree is promulgated by the Executive Branch normally though the Minister of the concerned Ministry authorized under a specific Act to set forth the details from time to time under the guidelines of the Act. For example a Royal Decree to revise the tax rates under the Revenue Code. Emergency Degree - An emergency Decree is enacted

by the executive branch, though the cabinet in an emergency to protect the country from imminent harm but subject to subsequent confirmation of the Parliament. Administrative Agency Orders - Administrative agencies are empowered by the legislature to promulgate rules and regulations to carry out government functions. Cabinet Resolutions - Cabinet Resolutions have no binding effect but will influence the Government Agencies in the enforcement or interpretation of rules and regulations. Municipal Ordinances - Building, health and city planning codes are examples of local government laws.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

The Truth about

Sugar

Commonly called “Healthy Food” by experts, the media and even the government, are actually silently harming the health of you and your family, as well as allow excess body fat, and accelerated aging.

The real danger is excess sugar consumption You often hear vague claims in the news that “sugar is bad for you” or that “wheat and gluten are bad for you”, but do you truly understand what these foods do to your insides? Most people DON’T understand the reasons... and the fact is that some of the foods mentioned above can not only DESTROY your hormones and metabolism, but may also CAUSE you to get heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimers, and even cancer. Let’s clarify some simple biochemistry in your body... This deals with “glycation” in your body, and substances called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These nasty little compounds called AGEs speed up the aging process in your body including damage over time to your organs, your joints, and of course, wrinkled skin. 40

APPROACH July 2015

What is one of the biggest factors that increase production of AGEs inside your body? This may surprise you, but high blood sugar levels over time dramatically increase age-accelerating AGEs in your body. This is why type 2 diabetics many times appear that they have not aged well and look older than their real age. But this age-increasing effect is NOT just limited to diabetics. You’ve heard a million times from health experts,

HEATH & WELLNESS

bloggers, and on the news that sugar is terrible for you, but most people don’t truly understand WHY it’s so bad...

The truth about sugar is that you just cannot “burn” it off In fact, most people falsely think that if they eat sugar, they can just exercise a little bit harder that day or the next day so they can “burn it off”... Unfortunately, that kind of thinking will lead you to an early grave. It’s not as simple as just “burning off sugar” -- It’s about what sugar does internally to the cells of your body, and how sugar gums up your internal workings, causing disease.

tiny amounts such as having 5 grams of sugar from a teaspoon of honey in your tea... Small amounts of natural sugar like that are not a problem. The REAL damage occurs when you eat that piece of cake and ingest 40-50 grams of sugar in one sitting, or that bag of candy with 35+ grams of sugar, or that soft drink with 45 grams of sugar or more... Or even that socalled “healthy” smoothie at the local smoothie shop that contains a whopping 80 grams of sugar because of all of the fruit syrups they use in them. Now that we know why sugar, is killing you and your family, maybe you’ll think twice about eating candy.

Sugar also causes extreme fluctuations in your blood sugar, and excess blood sugar causes Glycation inside your body, which accelerates the rate of aging of your organs, skin, arteries, and joints. Sugar also raises your triglycerides to dangerous levels, which can lead you to heart disease. Damage by Glycation results in stiffening of the collagen in the blood vessel walls, leading to high blood pressure, especially in diabetes. Glycations also cause weakening of the collagen in the blood vessel walls which may lead to micro- or macro-aneurisms; this may cause strokes if in the brain. If that weren’t bad enough, eating sugar too frequently also causes type 2 diabetes in the long run because you wear out your pancreas and insulin sensitivity.

Source: The Nutrition Watchdog

If you knew exactly why sugar is so bad for you and exactly what it does to your cells in your body, I promise that you would think twice about eating that piece of cake, candy, sugary soft drink, fruit juice, or ice cream, or feeding them to your children. Red blood cells have a consistent lifespan of 120 days and are easily accessible for measurement of recent increased presence of glycation product. This fact is used in monitoring blood sugar control in diabetes by monitoring the glycated haemoglobin level, also known as HbA1c. To clarify, when we talk about how much damage sugar does to your body, we’re NOT talking about July 2015 APPROACH

The Ford Story In 1961, Lee Lacocca, vice president and general manager of Ford Division, had a vision. His vision was a car that would seat four people, have bucket seats, a floor mounted shifter, be no more than 180 inches long, weigh less than 2500 pounds, and sell for less than $2500.00. Out of this vision, the Ford Mustang was born. Mustang’s components were borrowed from the Ford Falcon, including most of the drivetrain. With a multitude of different interior, exterior, and drivetrain options, the Mustang would be able to be ordered as plain, or as fancy, as economical, or as fast, as the buyer wanted. In general, the Mustang was designed for everyone and was advertised as “the car to be designed by you”.

Upgrades over the years included a GT version which was to become the basis for the Carrol Shelby´s GT350 and later the “BOSS” version. 1973 brought the last year of the “big” Mustang. It was to be replaced by a smaller, lighter breed, therefore, most of the changes for ‘73 were merely cosmetic. A large, square, chrome headlamp bezel appeared, as did chrome trim around the tail lights. The 1973 Mustang convertible was to become the last Mustang convertible for many years. There were a total of 134,867 Mustangs produced in 1973. Today , the 2015 Mustang is quite different car. With optional power difference. Smaller body design and more powerful engines.

Here some Specifications: Mustang 3.7L V6 engine with an output of 300 HP – 280 lb-ft/torque and 22mpg / 9.2 km/l. Mustang GT 5.0L V8 – 435 HP – 400 lb-ft/torque and 25 mpg / 10km/l Mustang Shelby GT350 – 5.2l V8 – 500+ HP – 400 lb/ft torque and Fuel consumption – no comment.

Low Riders

Hua Hin Conversions

A lowrider (sometimes low rider) is an automobile or other vehicle modified so that its ground clearance is less than its design specification. There is not a definitive date for the origin of lowriders. Most scholars argued the modern lowriders started right after the World War II as many Chicana/os returned to their communities with new knowledge about mechanics and the surplus of materials. Many lowriders have hydraulic suspension systems (modified suspension) so that their ride can change height at the flip of a switch. In Hua Hin there is a company that can convert, preferably US big cars, to low riders. They are located on the road to Pala U just on the Hua Hin side.

The Admiral Bar & Grill

cocktails and a seafood tower or appetizer. The wine cellar offers over a 100 bottles of red, white, sparkling wine and champagne from all corners of the globe. With humidity and temperature control a high priority, these works of art offer a truly unbeatable experience.

The Top Deck Bar is a great place to enjoy sun downers while watching the sunset.

The usual friendly and helpful reception had us seated overlooking Damnernkaseam road but for a quieter dinner you could choose to sit inside, away from the traffic but unaware of the going-on´s on the street.

The outdoor area, the deck with a shaded canopy is the perfect environment to relax in the afternoon and evening with a bottle of wine or one of our signature

The menu contains popular scandinavian dishes and Thai food alike .Pasta & Pizza are on the menu as well. However we did want to concentrate on the food suggested by the executive chef. As a starter, the Chef soup of the day, corn soup was served with warm garlic bread and a matching glass of white wine, a fresh Frascati, Rome´s signature white wine seved chilled and made from Trebiano and Greco grapes. The corn soup was followed up by a “Falling Start” being a poached and fried fillet of white fish garnished with

shrimp and caviar and a rolled slice of smoked salmon accompanied by the same wine, the Frascati. The Falling start became my favourite as it was placed on a slice of very dark bread almost resembling a pumpernickel, further decorated with salad and tomato slices. A delicious starter I highly recommend. The Main course was, what else could it be, the signature stone grilled Black Angus Tenderloin known as the eye filet, placed raw on a hot stone and left to the guest to turn it around and wait until it is cooked to their taste. It looked so inviting, I could eat it raw whereas my accompanying table sharer chose to cook his medium. The succulent filet was truly lean and best described as a “mouth melt”. I don’t believe in meat connoisseurs, I only believe in perfect tasting food and this was perfect. The wine matching this piece of delicacy may differ as taste buds desire either a dry Bordeaux, or spanish red wine or a rather lighter Merlot. My choice fell on a chilean, plummy tasting smooth, ripe and unctuous (arrogant) red wine, perfectly matching the meat.

As we concluded the dinner with an apple crumble terrine and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, we were ready to move on to URBAN FUZION a sister establishment for an update on soccer and rugby. At the Urban things get more challenging in terms of discussions ongoing, the daily changing themes (Monday´s Bar Bite Night – Tuesday´s Pint Night – Wednesday Whisky Day – Saturday and Sunday Free flow of beer with a one bacon and cheese burger from THB 590 Net) and the world politic resolutions that fortunately never leave the table edge. Summing up the dinner evening: it was a culinary experience with prime meat served in a classy, yet in a simple restaurant with plenty of amenities making it a very pleasant “going out” evening. The pricing may touch the sensitive side of your wallet but the quality of the food makes up for it. Our friendly host David and the boys were always at hand and happy to fulfill any wish. APPROACH warmly recommends The Admiral Bar & Restaurant and Urban Fuzion for a lovely night out.

Man makeup is increasingly popular. Celebrities such as Johnny Depp and Bradley Cooper have been photographed sporting more than a little bit of slap. Even heartthrob Harry Styles, of One Direction fame, is alleged to have worn lipstick to the band’s film premiere.

FASHION

Women 2015 Fashion Forecasts

SUMMER COLLECTION TRENDS 2015 is here to deliver bright colours and laidback style from spring and summer. Some looks you’ve loved before will have fresh spins and others will be completely new. Jump on the matte lip and loose denim looks now and get excited about what’s to come! 1. Shades Of Blue and Green The sunny colour takes over the Spring 2015 runways in many different ways. Pops of bright blue, purple and orange on floral dresses will be a fun add to your closet. There has to be enough fabric on a summer dress to grab, at least to hold. This will ensure its breathability (for want of a more elegant word) - 25 degreesplus is not the climate in which to be trussed up, wearing control pants or having to worry about a wriggling hemline or revealing more than you’d like. It will also bring a greater degree of versatility to the piece - a sleeved summer dress really will be able to take you from brunch to beach BBQ sundowners. The right one is forgiving, she doesn’t mind getting covered in cucumber-sandwich crumbs or factor 50, and she delivers on laid-back allure. Now, which to buy? It is all up to your personal taste and allure.

When women started wearing bikinis in the 1940s and 1950s, it was for female empowerment, to “rebel against tradition.” So, wait, what happened to that? How did we go from girl power to body shaming? Everyone who goes to the beach has a beach body, no matter what they’re wearing. Summer holidays are just around the corner, as is the task of finding the perfect swimwear. Whether you prefer an itsy-bitsy bikini, a classic all-in-one swimsuit or something sporty, here are the latest designs.

KIDS & EDUCATION

International Education in Thailand Is Thailand to become a hub for international education?

W

ith the integration of ten ASEAN member countries as the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, Thailand is gearing up in every possible way to take full advantage of the merger. Significant emphasis on trade and services has been imminent, but very few would have thought that international education in Thailand was among the contributors to the economy. Thailand is the only country in the world with the largest number of international schools. The trend has taken a new turn in the past decade when expat communities began to grow and Thai nationals were allowed to be enrolled in these schools.

64

APPROACH July 2015

KIDS & EDUCATION

The number of international schools has risen quickly following the economic boom in Thailand. This indicates that while the number of enrolment is increasing, the economy could not be worse than it looked. According to the International School Association of Thailand (ISAT), a few of the best international schools in this region are in Thailand. International schools have gained trust among Thai parents and foreign investors who send their children to these schools in Thailand.

Almost all of the foreign-based and international curriculum schools in Thailand have been internationally recognized and students who graduated from these schools went on to higher education at famous universities around the world. International schools in Thailand follow the curriculum from the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Australia, Singapore, France, India and the International Baccalaureate program.

investors, the integration of the ASEAN nations will make it easier for foreign investors who are raising their families to consider Thailand their second home where the cost of living is relatively reasonable and international education is second to none. However most international institutions are unaffordable for middle incomes. If your family is relocated to Thailand by your dad’s company, the educational fees are paid by the company, as a part of the relocation package.

International educational fees are anywhere from THB 350,000.- to 800,000.- per year and there is no subsidised programme or a monthly payment scheme. With registration fees between THB 25,000.- and THB 120.000.- or higher, better educational systems are laid away only for the fortunate expat and the local rich.

All of which also offer a second language class in many languages. The coming AEC has prompted Thailand to gear up to become an international hub of education in the ASEAN region. If Thailand remains attractive to July 2015 APPROACH

SPA & BEAUTY

Lanfah Spa Lanfah is not just an ordinary massage parlour or health spa.

The owner of Lanfah Spa has a long history of spa experience with a master degree in Physiotherapy and practical Spa experience at the Six Senses Spa, Chivasom and now her own company. Lanfah Spa is located on Petschkasem road, just a stone throw away from Market Village. As you enter the institution, you are welcomed by professional staff who seat you and ask you what therapy you are looking for.

68

APPROACH July 2015

It may be a simple Thai massage or an Aromatherapy massage, soothing, rebalancing your wellbeing. There are package deals which include body scrubs, Thai herbal compresses and deep relaxing stone therapies. Too much to mention in a single review. The therapist assigned to me firstly asked me about any symptoms I may have, muscle or even nerve problems. With a full tensioned back due to computer work, I became less and less flexible.

SPA & BEAUTY

The products used at Lanfah are the product that are used in 5 stars hotel and famous SPAs around the world. Guinot products of Paris will be available as from July. In addition to massage therapies, there are facial and detox packages available which reach from cleansing, brightening and nourishing the facial tissue, both for ladies and gentlemen. We decided on an exotic coconut skin compress. It is one of their signature treatments. Using warm pure coconut oil massage all over the body, not only to moisturize skin, but to sooth sensitive areas. My therapist also worked on my problem spot in my back and neck area, follow by a unique series of hot compresses. Instead of using herbal compresses like you may experience in other places, they wrap our compress ball with coconut, milk and organic rice inside. All ingredients work together to fill in your skin nutrient and moisturizer. Khun Mam, the therapist was specialized in this therapy. Carefully feeling her way through my trouble back until she found the places of concern. The massage and compress therapy lasted 90 minutes and gave me a relaxed and fresh feeling.

Cellulite treatment and stretch marks reduction for the ladies and soothing, deep cleansing facial treatments for the gents. Last but not least, there is a waxing programme that extends from half legs, full legs, removing unwanted facial hair and the famous Brazilian which needs no description.

I can highly recommend Lanfah as it also goes one step further in suggesting advanced treatment of your muscular and nervous system through medical treatment if they see no progress in your wellbeing through natural therapies. The prices are very fair for the service given in a professional relaxing atmosphere.

I was much more flexible and could look back further than before without having to turn my body. Being an old hand at massage experiences I must really remark that this is one of the most professional massage therapies I have experienced for a long time.
