EDITOR’S FOREWORD APPROACH PUBLISHING CO.,LTD.

Editor in Chief Gerard Mosselman Office Manager Pimwee P. (Kob) Graphic Office Thaiso Media ™

Need to apologize for a small detail pointed out to me by a dear fellow competitor. See how nice they are, might just ask them to proof read APPROACH in future. Anyway and yes, Isaan is not a province. It is a composition of provinces, so it is a region. Thanks Dave! An s after Province would have solved the problem. We are all looking forward to an increasing higher season which is good for Thailand and Hua Hin our not so sleepy town anymore on the gulf of Siam. With enormous projects going on we are climbing a steep hill of projects, developments and sophisticated targets putting Hua Hin on a desirable world top tourist destination. These days we have a totally new nationality of visitors. There was a small invasion of Chinese tourists in several coastal towns and of course Bangkok. Welcome to our friends from China! Not very much more to comment on, except the fact that I believe the Thai Baht is totally over evaluated and needs to adjust rapidly. Best way is probably to float it. In this way we will get visitors from Europe back again. However, this has been the case in the past and not much was done, causing more harm than doing good. As we stroll along , there is still much going on in The Stonehead City (Hua Hin´s original name) Check our upcoming events and concerts at the Hyatt and Dusit Thani , Carabao being in town among others and more events in Bangkok. Finally I thought it would be a good idea to write something about the history of Hua Hin, its origin and how it developed in course of time.

Urban Living F U R N I T U R E GRAND OPENING

SEPTEMBER 5th IN HUA HIN Good things come to those who wait! Joachim and Matt have announced the grand opening for their brand new furniture shop, “Urban Living Furniture” on Petchkasem Road, Soi 38 , right next to the shopping village named Plearn Wan, and are welcoming retail and wholesale customers to visit their showroom and have a closer look at their furniture range that they have carefully selected over the past view months. After the acquisition of an existing furniture shop did not materialize, Joachim and Matt are very pleased to have found this new and modern 1-A location on Petchkasem Road that provides the ideal environment to signify their chosen brand “URBAN LIVING”. An urban lifestyle feeling shall be illustrated by a selection of trendy, modern to contemporary home and outdoor furniture as well as accessories for which suppliers were chosen that focus on quality rather than quantity, pay attention to details and have tight quality control protocols in place. After a thorough research of local furniture offers, the new business owners identified a niche for furniture styles that are best labelled as ‘Scandinavian’. It stands for innovative, minimalistic, stylish and solid elegance that will give a home a distinct and tasteful ambience of modern urbanity and inspired them to develop their company motto “Anything but Ordinary”. Joachim and Matt have also high ambitions to establish their business as an integrated furniture solution provider to wholesale customers for which Joachim and Matt are taking advantage of their individual but complementary skill sets. Joachim, who used to be an international Senior

Banker in complex corporate finance subjects, has developed a distinct marketing strategy for residential property developers as well as for restaurant, bar and boutique hotel owners that is based on “value building blocks” from conception to installation of an interior design for a particular project. Matt on the contrary has an interior design background obtained from the renowned Raffles Design Institute of Singapore. By combining a business with a creative mind these two have put together a business concept that they believe is unrivalled. The feedback from pre-marketing meetings with property developers and private chats at business network meetings were quite positive and encourage them to rollout their concept to a wider audience as soon as their retail business is established. Retail customers who find their way to the showroom shall be assisted in making the best choices for their home, whether it is a condo or a house. Matt stands by to help selecting a furniture style, fabric or colour that not only blends into a home but also meets the individual preference of a customer. At request, Matt will also visit a home to provide ideas for creating a new home ambience within a given budget. Overall, furniture shoppers in Hua Hin will appreciate the new start up of URBAN LIVING Furniture not only because its concept is geared towards new lifestyle trends and the desire of developers to see more creativity in furniture package solutions but also because it offers modern and stylish more upmarket furniture that shopper would otherwise only find in Bangkok.

Hua Hin A Royal Retreat I

n or about 1834, farmers settled on the gulf coast in search of a better place that was not affected by the draught they encountered further north in Petchaburi. They gave it the name of Samore Riang (Samo Riang), which means “Rows of Rocks”. Popularised as a resort in the early 1920s by King Prajadhipok, Hua Hin is closely associated with the Thai royal family. The tranquil fishing village was turned into a royal resort and consequently became popular among Siam’s nobility and upper classes. In 1921 Prince Purachatra, director of the state railway built the Railway Hotel close to the beach. Princess Chumbhot was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Rambhai Barni and remembers being part of a royal party, which spent several weeks at Prince Nares’ palace in 1926. His Majesty King Prajadhipok was there to plan a summer palace on the beach, to be designed by one of Prince Nares’ sons. 10

APPROACH September 2015

King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) liked the place so much that he built a summer palace in 1928 which was later named Klai Kang Won (“far from worries”). It was built in Spanishstyle-architecture with a facade overlooking the sea. The present monarch King Bhumipol, often is in residence here, hence the presence of Royal warships normally anchored offshore. His Royal Highness Prince Krom Phra Naresworarit was the first member of the royal family to build a group of palaces at Ban Laem Hin, called Sukaves, and gave the beach next to his palace the name “Hua Hin”. Hua Hin means stonehead in the Thai language. In 1932 Hua Hin was part of Pran Buri district. In 1949 Hua Hin was promoted to be a district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province. After the building of the southern railway, Hua Hin became the first and most popular beach resort of Thailand and unlike other popular resorts is visited plenty by the Thai people as well as tourists.

Hua Hin continued to develop in its own leisurely way, both as an aristocratic resort with the added attraction of one of Asia’s first 18-hole golf courses and as a fishing port. Many of Bangkok’s rich and famous built their own beachfront summer homes to the north and south along the curving sandy bay, enjoying leisurely family weekends in a resort that has maintained its unique identity.

Hua Hin beach extends three kilometres southwards from a rocky headland until a southern headland where a Buddhist temple clings to the cliffs. Fine white sand, resort hotels and many water sports opportunities lend the resort its distinctive ambiance. At the south end of town, the hill of Khao Takiab interrupts the beach. On the other side is a lovely swimming beach with a view of Khao Takiab’s south face. Just a little further on is Suan Son beach which is owned by the Thai army but open to the public. Notable for the tropical sea pines lining the shore.

The elite of Bangkok society began flocking to Hua Hin, at first to stay in the hotel and later in bungalows they built along the beach. One of them, Princess Chumbhot of Nakorn Sawan, recalls that the first of the holiday residences, Saen Samran House, belonged to Prince Nares, a son of King Chulalongkorn.

The rise of Hua Hin in Thai history came with the opening of the Railway Hotel, now known as the Centara Grand, built by Prince Purachatra, the Director-General of the State Railways, after the Southern line was completed. It was an elegant Victorian structure on the shore. Not far away, an excellent golf course with meticulously tended

With 2 Shopping Malls and a third one called Blu Port Mall, a water jungle park and many more leisure events and on and off the beaches, Hua Hin is no longer that sleepy fisherman´s village but developed into an attractive little paradise and a top tourist destination for visitors world wide.

Prince Chakrabongse built a complex of bungalows, together with a Victorian-style gazebo on a scenic location near Hua Hin village.

Today, Hua Hin is growing rapidly with a population of about 58.000 registered residents and ever moving migrants running away from the cold territories to spend the winter months in Hua Hin.

Swedish Chamber Orchestra at The Hyatt Hua Hin

The O/MODERNT Kammarorkester from Stockholm performing on October 22nd at The Hyatt Regency in Hua Hin The O/Modernt Kammarorkester is the resident orchestra at Musikaliska in Stockholm, performing with soloists such as Anne-Sofie von Otter, Evelyn Glennie, Anna Larsson, Nils Landgren, Steven Isserlis etc. In 2015 the orchestra will make its debut in London at King’s Place and in the Netherlands at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. It will also perform concerts in Bombay in combination with outreach work. The O/Modernt Kammarorkester has developed during recent years under the direction of the violinist Hugo Ticciati as an integral part of the Swedish festival O/Modernt (www.festivalomodernt.com).

O/Modernt can be translated as “unmodern” and refers to the underlying concept of the festival, a reinvention of the past through the exploration of the relationships between the work of old composers and the artistic and intellectual creations of modern culture. The O/Modernt Chamber Orchestra, which includes some of the top young players in Sweden, similarly devises eclectic and adventurous programmes of great diversity: its appearances might include anything from the arrangement of medieval motets to Bach and all the way to free improvisation and Metallica.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Rayong, Chanthaburi & Trat Provinces

Thailand has a lot to offer to those who, like to travel and discover new regions.

The South East of Thailand is a greenhouse of rich vegetated mountain slopes, beautiful plains and a pristine coastline. From the coast anywhere between Chonburi and the very Southern tip of Trat towards the Cambodian border and you can travel to the islands located in a clear light blue sea, Koh Chang being the largest and Koh Kut, famous for its 6 star resort Soneva.

N

eedless to mention that scuba diving, snorkelling and jungle tours enriches your stay. At Soneva Koh Kut, children have a paradise of activities organized by the resort and don’t miss the tree top breakfast where “Tarzan” serves your breakfast whilst you are tied up in a comfortable basket. One can get to the Islands per boat or light plane. It takes only a few hours from Bangkok, the highway to this southern region, and soon the completing expressway. After spending the night at the Centara Mirage in Pattaya which is a superb hotel with its own water park integrated, I took the coastal road to Rayong, the next destination.

Rayong is approximately 220 kms (140 miles) from Bangkok

and the province is famous for its fine beach, tasty food, etc. Several seaside resorts are beautiful and there are a lot of hotels and bungalows at reasonable prices. I chose to stay at the Novotel Rayong Rim Pae Resort, a beachfront 4 star resort with excellent facilities. In Rayong itself, there are several places you must see before travelling onwards. 14

APPROACH September 2015

The Statue of Sunthorn Phu - Sunthorn Phu, the great poet of the Ratanakosin Era, is well known by Thais and students learn his great poetry which were written in verses.

The statue of Sunthorn Phu is located in the village of

Ban Kram, the birthplace of his father. Sunthorn Phu was declared world poet by UNESCO in 1986 when Thailand celebrated his bicentennial.

Laem Mae Pim Beach is one of the most popular place for tourists, especially local people to enjoy swimming, having fun with watersports, sit back and relax on the long and clean white sand beach.

The Suan Son Park - Located at only 1 kilometer from Ban Phe District, these splendid trees line both verges of the road for a distance of 1 kilometer. It is a popular picnic place with shady areas and beautiful view of the adjacent beach. After two days in this region, I travelled further down towards Chanthaburi and the Namtok Phlio National Park

which is very well maintained and has a nice scenery. (Don’t forget to buy beans on your way from parking to entrance to feed the fish and bring you swim suits!)

Chanthaburi is about 245 kilometers from Bangkok and

TRAVEL IN THAILAND Last but not least I drove to Trat two days later. It is the easternmost province of Thailand. It borders with Cambodia to the east. Trat is most famous for gemstone mining and trading.

110 kilometers from Rayong.

Trat, with 52 large and small islands featuring long, white,

Commonly called Muang Chan, this eastern seaside province has played an important role in the history of the nation both before and during the Rattanakosin (Bangkok) period. It is wealthy and rich in natural resources. Particularly gems, in addition to the plentiful field of tropical fruits including Rambutan, Durian, Mangosteen and Langsat. Products from the seas are also extensive. It is also blessed with natural beauties and attractions equal to any sister provinces.

I did contemplate with the fact that I could just simply have flown to Trat with Bangkok Airways and make my way back with public transport, but taking into consideration that there is so much to see, a car comes in very handy. However, one could rent a car in Trat and give it back in Bangkok.

Delicious little restaurants with balconies on the water litter this street. Fabulous old buildings and lots of ordinary Thai people living ordinary lives. It is a photographers dream come true. Several old temples all in Chinese style tell a lot of the story of the human history in this area. I sat by the river, watching the sunset, sipping a cold beer, snacking in the various food choices.

Amazing Thailand!

sandy beaches and unspoiled coral reefs, offers delightful scenery and a number of tranquil hideouts for beach and nature-lovers. The province also serves as a major fruitgrowing, fishing, and gem mining region. Trat is also a transit point for people traveling to Cambodia. Here is the best place to arrange your travel to the islands of Koh Chang and Koh Kut and of course a dozen of small islands to spend the day snorkelling over unspoiled coral reefs. At Trat itself, I visited the Wat Buppharam, the oldest temple in Trat build in the mid 1600s during the later Ayutthaya period. The oldest wooden Wihaan (small wooden hall) in Thailand is its claim to fame, but it offers several other surprises that make it worth the trip. Several fantastic beaches, fishing villages and a decent little waterfall are wedged between the rugged mountains that form the border with Cambodia and the sea in the far southeast of Thailand. Before returning to the North again, I stayed at the Golden Cliff Beach resort but there is also a Centara 4 star Resort & Villas at a very reasonable price.

The more I travel, the more I discover the beauty of Thailand and the great diversity of cultures and nature.

This time I stayed at the Maldives Beach Resort, a three star resort right on the Chao Lao beach From there, I drove to the Chamson Crocodile Farm and Zoo which has a number of crocodiles of different species as well as other animals and the facility is surrounded by fruit orchards. An excellent way to spend the day and experience the indigenous wildlife in Thailand. September 2015 APPROACH

Social & Hotel News CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME On the occasion of Her Majesty´s 83th birthday, the Queen of Hearts was celebrated and honoured with a nationwide cycling event. The Dusit Thani staff marked the occasion in their own way. Whilst cycling was taking centre stage for so many, it was Dusit Thani Hua Hin’s own leading Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to support youth football in the local community through the highly successful Dusit Thani Hua Hin Football Academy (DTHHFA) that really came to the fore on this Mother’s Day. The academy, who boast children of the staff amongst well over 90 registered players and is preparing hard for the start of a new league season in September, teamed up with the hotel to organize a Cha-am Beach and Temple Cleaning Teambuilding Activity for players, coaches, family members, who were joined by Dusit Thani Hua Hin Staff. A working party of almost 100 people took part, leaving from the hotel for Cha-am Beach with a police escort which later took the convoy to Mrigadayawan Temple, where the group also had the opportunity to make merit, as well as donate towards the temple’s upkeep and construction of a central image of the Lord Buddha. Finally, some three hours later, everyone returned for a final sweep of the beach in front of Dusit Thani Hua Hin, followed by a well-deserved and much-needed buffet lunch, highlighted by a lucky draw and the presentation of certificates to all of the players who had taken part in the 2014/2015 Western Thailand Football Academy League. Though tiring, this most gratifying contribution to the local Cha-am community by Dusit Thani Hua Hin and Dusit Thani Hua Hin Football Academy was extremely well received, gaining extensive coverage from the local media, including Cha-am Charlie Cable TV on behalf of Thai TV Channel 7.

THAI NATURE

The Woodpecker Picidae

by Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The Woodpeckers (Picidae) are in the systematics of birds, a species-rich family of the order Piciformes. This bird family contains 28 genera and more than 200 species. In addition to the genuine woodpeckers (subfamily Picidae), it also includes the subfamily dwarf woodpecker (Picumninae) and the species-poor sub-family of turncoats (Jynginae).

Features The woodpeckers are stretched built birds with strong, straight, angular chisel beak, which is particularly in the true woodpeckers (Picinae), almost as long as the head. The skull has special adaptations that serve to dampen vibrations, for example, a resilient connection between beak and skull. The thin plate and horny tongue is far extendable and has short barbs at the end.

climb up tree trunks. The short feet usually have paired designed toes with powerful claws, of which two forward and two are directed backwards. Some species, such. as the three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), however, have only three toes, two facing forward and one backward.

Distribution The woodpeckers are distributed almost worldwide. But they are missing on one hand in areas where trees are missing, such as tundra, desert and steppe regions, on the other hand, there are also land masses with forests, in which woodpeckers are lacking. These areas include Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand, Madagascar, and the Pacific Islands.

The wings are of medium length and slightly rounded. In ‘genuine’ woodpeckers the tail is wedge-shaped with stiff, pointed tail feathers. He serves as a support when they 28

APPROACH September 2015

With over 100 species, the family developed the richest in South and Central America. The subfamily of dwarf woodpeckers occurs only in the tropics of the Americas, Africa and Asia. Turncoats, are only distributed in the Old World.

THAI NATURE

Behaviour Woodpeckers usually live alone or in pairs in forests, tree plantations and gardens. They unite only in exceptional cases, outside the breeding season, to larger groups. The woodpeckers move almost only climbing, hopping awkwardly on the ground and fly reluctant long distances. A special feature of woodpeckers is, that they knock with considerable force and considerable endurance with its beak against tree trunks, while the wood is chipping, to find food, construct nest boxes, to mark their territory or to attract mates. These activities are also called chisels (machining) and druming (courtship). It was reported that the Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) up to 12,000 times a day, strikes its beak against wood, and it is surprising that his brain is not harmed by these blows. A woodpecker can carry up to 20 beats per second. Each beat is according to a scientific report in the Nature Journal of October 2014, similar to an impact of the beak at the speed of 25 km / h against a wall.

rotation of the head is avoided, so that only low shear forces can have an influence. Finally, a woodpecker closes a millisecond before impact the eyes, protecting them from flying wood chips.

Nuitrition Most species feed on insects, which they find in or under the bark or in the bark of decaying wood. For this purpose, they climb up the trees and search for hollow spots by tapping with their beak along the tribes. Nature is pointing at the same time on a number of scientific publications in which it is explained, why woodpeckers do not get headaches, despite these pressures, loads. Firstly, the brain of woodpeckers is surrounded by very little cerebrospinal fluid, so their brain is sitting relatively rigid in the skull and is locked, while tapping shock waves can not hurl the brain from the inside against the skull, whereby a concussion is avoided. Furthermore, the skull is surrounded by strikingly strong muscles, which serve as a shock absorber: Same as with a boxer who sees the approaching hit, stroke, these muscles are contracting getting tense just before impact against the wood and absorb so as much of the energy. In addition, the tapping motion is executed extremely straight, so to speak, from the shoulder onwards out. Thereby neck and head remain rigidly to each other, and each horizontal or vertical

Some species, such as the wryneck (Jynx torquilla) or even the green woodpecker (Picus viridis), mainly live on ants and their larvae, which they find at the bottom. In some species, especially in the American juice lickers (Sphyrapicus), a larger portion of their food originating from tree sap, which they bring themselves to flow, by curling the tribes with their beak. Some species also eat fruits and seeds of plants, buds and mushrooms and even organize pantries. Dendrocopos are pressing for example hazelnuts or pine cones in tree columns, which they are creating beforehand by themselves, by chiseling a corresponding notch in the trunk or a branch) so they can crack open with their beak at the so fixed objects which in turn other birds, such as magpies exploit, to come after the expulsion of the non-ferrous woodpecker, on the content of the nuts or pine cones.

Breeding The woodpeckers are cavity nesters. The nests of the real woodpeckers (Picinae) are timbered by themselves usually in tree trunks. They are lined with only a few wooden chips. The woodpeckers lay three to eight white eggs, which are incubated by both sexes. The young birds are also known as altricial, that means, they remain some time in their nest. If they are fledged, they are expelled from the nest cavity, by the adult birds. September 2015 APPROACH

Technology is not wasted on the young What’s up with the kids today? – The Millennial Generation

YOUNG PEOPLE ARE CHANGING THE BUSINESS WORLD The Woodstock generation turned into the ageing boomers of today who, now that they are in charge seem to be engaging in sclerotic politics, running rapacious companies and listening to bad music just like their fathers and their fathers before them. A bit of a derivation from stock market figures and financial gambling which are very hard to keep up with. The millennial generation is like none before it. The members of its tribe are more idealistic, more altruistic and more entrepreneurial. They’re already changing the world and the best is surely yet to come.” What forces, if any, might prevent today’s millennials from becoming stodgy and conventional, and joining the System with demographic predictability? The biggest one I can come up with is technological progress. Modern techs let young people live lifes and create careers that were simply not possible a generation ago. This is already causing important changes, and I expect them to continue.

A connected young person today can communicate endlessly around the world for free (OK, at zero marginal cost, which is close enough to the same thing). He or she can also maintain robust social and professional networks. It’s possible, of course, to make too much of these developments, the bigger mistake is to underestimate them. 34

APPROACH September 2015

They combine to enable a life where the longstanding trade-off between fluidity and productivity is greatly eased. Experts have noticed that young people are already changing the business world. They looked as carefully as possible at the ages of the founders of the so-called “unicorns” — private companies valued at more than a billion dollars. The startling conclusion was that at least half the founders were almost certainly younger than 35 when they launched their companies. This is a remarkable amount of success and value creation among people who in earlier times would still have been at the beginning of their careers. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is an extreme example of a more general phenomenon: The rise of young tech moguls. We haven’t seen the last of them. Large startup communities around the world — from San Francisco to London, Berlin to Tel Aviv, Shanghai to Singapore are buzzing with energy. Young technologists are doing much more than writing apps these days. They’re biohacking, extending the block chain that underlies bitcoin and learning to make almost anything. Pharma and biotech, financial services and manufacturing will be at least somewhat shaken up by their work. Edited and compacted from The Financial Times

MONEY AFFAIRS

The Personal Inventory Sometimes the person you should fear most is yourself. By Jerry Mcmenamin

Many people rightly think it’s important to do an annual inventory on their savings and investments. Are you happy with the return on your savings? This question should be put in context of where you put your money and also in the time frame of your investment. If you have your capital in a bank account then you knew in advance that your returns are going to be miniscule. If you want to improve these returns then you will need to take action. If your investment is in a balanced portfolio with a five to ten year time frame or invested for income for a nondeterminate period then historically you will do well despite some annual setbacks.

It is essentially a matter of reassurance for the client. You should also schedule an annual review meeting on the anniversary of your portfolio.

What happens when you pass on? You may not give a hoot about who gets your money on your death or you may be like many do not like to face up to the fact that if you live in Thailand and are married to a much younger woman you will probably be dead long before your spouse.

If you’ve shown a loss or a very small return over the past year, don’t panic but check with your broker that the strategy you adopted at outset is still on track to meet your financial objectives as viewed in the long term. Perhaps you could do better by switching into funds which more accurately meet your needs than your current holdings.

Has your broker met your expectations when it comes to service? The easiest thing for a broker to do is to keep in touch with clients when times are good and the investment portfolio is getting fatter. Good brokers know that the important time to keep in touch with clients is when the portfolio is getting smaller.

So like all personal inventories the content is up to you. Sometimes the person you should fear most is yourself. Try and plan to become proactive when it comes to your savings and lifestyle and plan for your demise. Think of your family or loved ones. Warren Buffett’s tips for individual investors include this “The market is there to serve you and not to instruct you. It is not telling you whether you are right or wrong. The business results will determine that” thailandexpatfinance@yahoo.com September 2015 APPROACH

THAI LEGAL

Transferring Currencies in and out of Thailand Is there any limitation as to the amount of foreign currency you may bring in?

Under normal circumstances and in general you may transfer foreign currency to Thailand or bring it in cash without any limit but you must declare any amount over the equivalent of US$ 20,000 to the customs officer as you enter the country. (Airport – Harbour) If your purpose of bringing in foreign currency is to buy a condominium or a house, include this in your declaration, even if the foreign currency is below the equivalent of US$ 20,000. The reason behind this: If you ever sell your real estate and would like to transfer the same amount out of the country, you need proof that you brought it in! Always save your receipt from the customs officer.

The only exceptions to the rule above are if you are only temporarily on holiday or assignment for not longer than 90 days or if you are a diplomat or belonging to an international organization with diplomatic privileges and immunities.

Can you legally send foreign currency from Thailand to another country? Yes you can but the limitation is that you may only purchase foreign currency in relation to a specific need. For example: sending money abroad to pay an invoice or insurance. There are specific documents at your bank to fill out and get the transaction authorized.

Can you have a foreign currency account in Thailand?

Documents requirements will depend of the purpose of the transaction, therefore please check with your bank what documents you will need prior to the transaction.

Yes you can and there are several bank institutions offering this service.

Foreigners may not have more than 300,000,000 THB in aggregate in all their bank accounts in Thailand.

If you receive foreign currency from abroad, you must either convert it into Thai baht at an official bank or deposit it in a foreign currency account within 360 days after receiving the amount. Note : Like always in Thailand read the fine print. Never sign a document with a incorrect content because it is the surest way to get yourself into a lot of trouble. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Fungus in the Tropics YOUR BODY NEEDS SOME FUNGUS AND BACTERIA but ...... Living in the tropics can bring about different health issues. The heat is a great catalyser for skin issues we seldom encounter in North Western countries and bacteria grows more eagerly. Food spoils quicker and hygienic matters show their bad face sooner. A number one issue in avoiding an invasion of fungus and bacteria are fresh and healthy food and body hygiene.

For instance Aspergillus fungi can be inhaled through the mouth or nose and can cause fever, cough, and wheezing. In very severe instances, this fungal infection can spread to other organs including the brain, skin and bones.

Many fungi are to some degree harmless and a good number are quite necessary for health. Things can get complicated when the bad fungus takes over in our bodies. The difference between fungus and bacteria is that both are minute organisms that are found in almost every ecosystem on earth and both can associate with other groups of living things. They can either be harmless and necessary in biological processes or they can be highly dangerous. Fungi are scavengers, feeding off dead stuff. Bacteria on the other hand are a little more sophisticated in the fact that they can actually manufacture their own food. There are several fungal infections that result from different types of fungi entering the body. 40

APPROACH September 2015

Cryptococcus neoformans is found in the soil or in bird droppings. This fungus also enters the body through the mouth or nostrils and can cause a lung infection resulting in a cough or chest pain. Yeast, also known as Candida albicans is a type of fungus that is present in all humans. The fungus is found on both the skin and mucous membranes and in small amounts it is harmless to the body. However, when the growth of yeast increases dramatically, the results can be absolutely devastating.

HEALTH & WELLNESS However above symptoms may not have been caused by fungus or bacteria. In the medical world there are a lot of other possibilities.

When you have a healthy body, the yeast is kept under control by the healthy bacteria within your body. However, medical antibiotics and those found in much of the meat we eat, will upset the balance of your friendly bacteria. Since antibiotics are nonselective, they work to weaken the good bacteria that keeps yeast in check. The yeast then begins to flourish, and before you know it, it’s completely out of control.

The best way to determine if you have yeast overgrowth is by taking a look at your lifestyle and diet. Do you crave sweets and carbohydrates, experience constant illness, have a mental illness that doesn’t respond to medication, or generally feel “unwell”? Chances are you’re experiencing yeast overgrowth and need to make some changes to your diet. Eventually the immune system can become so weak that the symptoms are no longer tolerable. Often physicians will prescribe antibiotics to treat the symptoms, thus killing off the last of any friendly bacteria. When yeast is in this advanced state, depression and suicidal thoughts are very common.

Antibiotics are not the only contributor to the upset of your healthy bacteria; cortisone, some birth control pills and certain drugs have an effect on it as well. Yeast thrives on sugar, carbohydrates, moldy foods, fermented foods and vinegar. If you’ve ever noticed that your cravings for any of these are very strong, chances are, you have a yeast overgrowth in your body. When the level of yeast is elevated in your body, toxins are released into your bloodstream in high amounts. These waste products have a profound effect on your well-being and are linked to many health problems. The effects of yeast overgrowth will worsen over time, and will seriously compromise physical, mental and emotional well-being. Hidden, deviant fungus may be the reason for any number of seemingly unrelated health complaints. Very often, you will find that two seemingly unrelated things, like muscle twitches and frequent bladder infections, are the result of yeast gone wild. Here are some signs that yeast may have moved in and is slowly taking over your body. If you suffer frequently from more than three of these, it may be time to learn more about yeast: Fungal infections on skin or nails - Athlete’s foot - Toenail fungus - Fatigue - Constipation - Bloating - Diarrhea - Bad breath - Dry mouth - Joint pain - Hyperactivity - Poor concentration Mood swings - Anxiety – Depression - Strong cravings for sugar or refined carbohydrates - Eczema or psoriasis – Hives - Seasonal allergies or itchy ears - Urinary tract infections - Vaginal or rectal itching and several more.

The first step in addressing the problem is to adjust your diet. Eliminate all processed foods and sugar, and begin eating only wholesome, organic foods if possible. The following foods also help the body heal from the assault of candida overgrowth and encourage the proliferation of healthy bacteria:

Coconut oil: This tropical treasure has strong antifungal properties.

Garlic: Garlic also has strong antifungal properties, and will destroy unfriendly bacteria.

Seaweed: It may not be too appealing to look at, but

seaweed is a highly nutrient-dense food that can fight against yeast overgrowth.

Pumpkin seeds: These tiny seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids which have antiviral and antifungal properties.

Ginger: Ginger is a powerful detoxifier that increases circulation and flushes toxins out of the liver.

Editor’s note : This article is extracted from a more detailed medical article and edited to the main issues. I personally find the medical Internet interesting but confusing and you may get the wrong idea as you look for symptoms you are experiencing. Always consult your physician before jumping to conclusions. GMoss. September 2015 APPROACH

MOTORING MOTORING

Back to the Future Hyundai – Vision G The Hyundai Vision G is a concept and one that features a 420bhp, 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet. But power isn’t the key, here, it’s the design. The Vision G takes the form of a pillar less, two-door coupe. One with an enormous grille, huge alloy wheels and a very upmarket-looking ’slingshot profile’. Vision G appears dynamic and in constant motion.” No further details available.

Jeep Cherokee Diesel

The new Jeep Cherokee is a 2.2-litre four-cylinder ‘Multi-Jet’ diesel powered car that replaces the 168bhp version of the old 2.0-litre. It is available with either 182bhp or 197bhp. It’s faster than before. Actually quite a bit faster. Against the engine it replaces the 197bhp version is 1.5 seconds quicker to 62mph (8.5 seconds) and just one tenth off the range-topping 268bhp V6 petrol-engined Cherokee. Which now puts the Cherokee properly in touch with rivals from Land Rover and BMW. It’s also faster – 127mph on the top end – cleaner (150g/km of CO2), and more efficient too (49.6mpg/ 21 km/l) ( combined city – highway)).

Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion Volkswagen has set its sights on fleet buyers with the new Passat BlueMotion. The four-door saloon and the estate, both variants claim 76.3mpg/ 30 KM/l. combined and emit just 95g/km of CO2. Those headline figures are made possible by a modified version of the standard entry-level 118bhp 1.6 TDI diesel engine, with 250Nm of torque and a six-speed manual gearbox. Performance is unaffected, with a 0-62mph time of 10.8 seconds - and a top speed of 130mph Those efficiency figures are almost class-leading, but the Passat’s chief rival, the Ford Mondeo Econetic just pips it with 78.5mpg and 94g/km of CO2. It isn’t as fast, however losing out over a second in the 0-62mph sprint.

KIA Sportage It’s just a sketch, but it’s a bold one, you’ll agree. And on 15 September 2015, this sketch will morph, Terminator-like, into the all-new Kia Sportage. Kia has confirmed that a new, fourthgeneration version of its small SUV will get a world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show, previewing a completely new “progressive design”. Kia mentions that it will exude “power and agility from every angle”. We certainly hope there is more power and agility from the chassis, too, because though the Sportage has always looked good, its driving never matched up to the exterior promise. 44

MOTORING

Mercedes Class C Coupe The one you want has yet to be revealed, but the one most of you will actually buy is here. This is the brand new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. Of course, you want the C63 AMG Coupe . The two door version of the new C-Class saloon, has a new ‘sportier’ front end, long bonnet and a dropping roofline that leads into an S-Class-style rear end. Or as Benz puts it, “the Mercedes coupe genes”.The C-Coupe is lighter than before too, thanks to light-alloy construction for the wings, bonnet and boot lid, while the body itself is stiffer than before. And that swoopy bodystyle helps it achieve a drag coefficient of 0.26. You have the option of a 1.6-litre, four-pot petrol C180 with 156bhp, and a 2.0-litre petrol with 184bhp (C200) 211bhp (C250), or indeed 245bhp in the C300. There are two –Diesels engines available: a 2.1-litre four-cylinder available with 170bhp or 204bhp. Things like collision prevention systems, adaptive cruise control, brake assist, lane keeping assist, parking assist, sat-nav traffic sign assist and many, many others are standard.

VW Golf GTI

Seven generations and 40 years ago, the Volkswagen Golf GTI carved out the hot hatch template, and in 2015 its position on the performance car map is as crucial as ever. An average family hatch with the heart of a sports car, it avoids any frills or fanfare and focuses on driving fun without the compromises. A facelifted version of the current GTI is due in late 2016, but VW’s top engineers and designers have already turned their attention to the all-new Mk8 GTI, scheduled to arrive in 2019. Instead of another incremental improvement, VW is planning a revolution for its most famous hot hatch – and our exclusive images show how it could look. Even in standard form, an updated 2.0 TSI engine will produce around 260bhp Performance version will offer just under 300bhp, and feature an electronic front differential and bigger brakes.

Until now......... This is the Terrafugia TF-X, and it is surely the answer to our airborne automotive prayers. Built by the Bostonbased outfit behind the still-not-yet-in-production Transition, it’s a bold vision of a transportation future unbounded by roads, runways or pleasing aesthetics. The TF-X – which will seat four open-minded humans – is capable of vertical take-off, thus negating the need for a runway. Wings furled, it’ll squeeze into a standard single garage, thus negating the need for a hanger in which to store your personal plane. It’s powered by a plug-in hybrid arrangement, a pair of electric motors combining with a 300bhp petrol engine to produce a frickin’ megawatt of output. Aerial thrust is provided by a ducted fan at the rear, and a propeller at the end of each retractable wing. We don’t know how fast the TF-X will go on road, but once airborne it’ll soar at speeds of 200mph for a distance of up to 500 miles. Which means you could hop from Bangkok or Hua Hin to KL in under three hours, and in a single bound. It’s the future we were always promised. We’re in.However. There are, admittedly, a few tiny issues with the TF-X. First, as you may have deduced from the rather renderised images, it doesn’t actually exist yet. Terrafugia admits bringing the flying car to production is a process ‘expected to last 8-12 years’, which means, realistically, it’ll be the middle of next decade before we see one on the driveway of TG Towers. GOLF NEWS Golf in Thailand Thailand is great for golf and is the third most popular country in the world to take a golf vacation after the USA and Spain. With over 230 courses covering this vast country it is very hard not to find a cluster of a few challenging and unusual courses to enjoy. If you are used to the rather stuffy atmosphere of your local club back home, then Thailand will be a revelation, with its warm welcome both at the clubhouse and on the course.

In Hua Hin especially, it is a very relaxing experience to play a round of golf and in many cases you will be playing golf surrounded by some spectacular scenery and incredible wildlife as well. Hua Hin will give you an unusual golfing experience. In greater Hua Hin there are 11 - 18 holes major Golf courses with fantastic lay outs and natural surroundings.

The Hua Hin Golf Shop on Rieb Tang Rod Fai Road (Soi 68 – 70) parallel to the railroad tracks off Soi 51, is great for helping you with your equipment and will get you a tee off booking at one of the excellent golf courses. Cal: +66(0) 32 512 919 or +66(0) 89 911 1559

him into contact with Swatton, who imposed a disciplined coaching regime. There’s a long way to go before Spieth, McIlroy and Day can be regarded in the same way as Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, who comprised the original big three. But maybe, somewhere in the future, that moment will come.

Tiger Woods needs victory at Wyndham Championship

Colin Swatton is much more than just a caddie to the Australian star. Swatton’s support helped his ailing boss complete the US Open at Chambers Bay. Within two months Day fulfilled his golfing potential in brilliant style with a record-breaking major championship score of 20 under par. Golf’s newest major champion only took up the game when his late father rescued an old three wood from a rubbish dump. It only became Day’s salvation because it brought 50

Tiger Woods heads into this week’s Wyndham Championship knowing that only a win will be enough for him to qualify for the FedEx Cup play-offs.

SPORTS The former world No 1 hasn’t posted a top-10 finish since 2013 but heads to Sedgefield needing a victory to move in to the top 125 in the FedEx standings and reach the season-ending play-offs. The world No 286 blamed his ‘awful putting’ for a slow start to last week’s PGA Championship, eventually missing the cut for a third consecutive major. Woods has now missed more cuts than in any year during his career, but remains upbeat about his chances in North Carolina. “I just need to get more consistent with everything and starting to string together not just holes, not just rounds but tournaments,” Woods told a pre-tournament press conference. “That is why this tournament is so important to me.”Hopefully I can win here, get in to the play-offs and starting to play a bunch of golf. If not, then I’ve got a big break. “Basically if I don’t win this event, I’ll start my off-season earlier and start getting ready for my early season tournament.”

The 26-year-old was forced to miss the defence of his Open title at St Andrews and last week’s Bridgestone Invitational, but has confounded expectations by declaring himself ready to defend his PGA crown at Whistling Straits. How Jordan Spieth replaced Rory McIlroy as world No 1

Rory McIllroy Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke believes Rory McIlroy can contend for a fifth major title this week, despite his long injury lay-off. McIlroy’s last competitive round was a closing 66 in the US Open on June 21, the world No 1 then rupturing a ligament in his left ankle during a game of football with friends on July 4.

Jordan Spieth has become world No 1 at this week’s 97th PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. Spieth replaced the four-time major winner in the world rankings with victories in the Open Championship. The world’s top two have been drawn together for the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday, playing alongside last month’s Open champion Zach Johnson.

WINE TASTING

Spanish Rioja Wine - Hosted by the Hyatt Regency in Hua Hin World Class Wines & Freixenet Winery presented a wine dinner where Spanish Rioja wines were paired with a four course dinner.

T

he welcome drink was a Freixenet Brut Vintage Reserva Cava Wine 2010 a white sparkling aeritif wine. The four course meal consisted of a starter of slow cooked Duck Breast on a cramberry red cabbage cream dressed with zucchini ribbons and daikon cress, served with Solar Viejo Monologo Rioja Crianza 2011 - A deep red pomegranate Rioja with complex flavours of dried leaves, tobacco and leather. The second course brought us a Jasmine Oil Poached Lobster with Shimeiji mushrooms on a pea puree with rosella, served with a Solar Viejo Rioja Crianza 2011 red wine. Red fruits aromas typical of Tempranillo in Rioja Alavesa, with notes of caramel and vanilla derived from barrel ageing. The main course was a slowly roasted Veal Loin “Veal Duo” with braised cheeks, Vichy carrots, fava beans and cauliflower mousseline served with a Solar Vielo Rioja Reserva 2008 red wine. An aristocratic Rioja , precise fruit flavours, wondrous in its complexity: black tea, cocoa bean, sweet spices, black truffles, black fruits, all oak-preserved and beautifully, intensely executed. Rounding off the menu is a cheese platter with a variety of international cheese bites, grapes, sesame grissini and dry fruit nut chutney along a Valdubon Ribera der Duero Reserva 2011 Dark violet, blueberry and earthy black plummy fruit with streaks of licorice and spice. Rioja is Spain in a glass of red wine. When we think of Rioja we also immediately picture the country side of Spain.

The wine is known for its structure and tannins, similar to Cabernet Sauvignon but it also has a fruity characteristic. This is a wine perfect for a drinker who loves Cabernet but is also looking for the dominant cherry flavour that’s often present in a wine like Pinot Noir. Rioja is made from a blend of grape varieties, with Tempranillo the dominant grape. (Garnacha is typically included in the blend to add some fruitiness, with Mazuelo and Graciano also included). Unlike other countries who have adopted grapes that were originally indigenous to France and Italy, Tempranillo was born and cultivated in Spain, and there is no region for which they are more proud and taken more seriously than Rioja. A Rioja separates into four levels of classification, which depends on the amount of time the wine spends in oak. Rioja is the basic form of the wine. It has been aged only a few months in an oak barrel. It is in this wine where the juice will taste the “ripest” because the wine is very young. A Crianza spend a minimum of 1 year in oak and another few months in bottles. Reserva is made from the best grapes of the harvest. A Reserva must be aged at a minimum of 3 years, with at least one year being in oak Gran Reserva is made in years with exceptional growing seasons. A Gran Reserva must be aged in oak for at least 2 years, and then must spend at least 3 more years in the bottles. September 2015 APPROACH

Primary education is compulsory in all western countries and most of the other part of the world. The commencing age is usually 6 years of age. The National Education Act of 1999, formal education is divided into two levels: basic and higher education. Basic education refers to the twelve years of schooling preceding higher education.

Pre-school education - Depending on the local conditions, there are three types of pre-primary education available for children aged 3-5: preschool, kindergarten and childcare centres Private schools usually offer a three-year kindergarten program Preschool education is not compulsory 60

APPROACH September 2015

Secondary education is mainly divided into two cycles: lower and upper secondary, each one lasting three years. The upper secondary system is divided into two parallel tracks: general or academic and vocational (leading to the certificate of vocational education). Some upper secondary schools require students to take the

KIDS & EDUCATION entrance examination, especially for high-demand public schools or schools located in municipal areas. In some cases school boards individually set special conditions to admit students to upper secondary. Formal vocational education at the postsecondary level (vocational colleges) generally lasts two years leading to a diploma . Students may continue their vocational education at the university level.

Higher education is provided at universities, technical institutes, professional, technical colleges and teachers’ colleges. A doctoral degree requires an additional two to five years of study following a master’s degree. A one-year programme (following the master’s degree) leads to the award of the higher graduate (professional) diploma, mainly in the field of medical sciences.

to be responsive to the changing socio-economic and technological conditions in a country or region. The development of primary and secondary school curricula is mainly under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education in any country.

School Curricula are often modified and revised in order
