EDITOR’S FOREWORD

Editor in Chief Gerard Mosselman Office Manager Pimwee P. (Kob) Graphic Office Thaiso Media

No use complaining. A good friend sends me daily reminders of how wonderful life can be if we would only appreciate more what we have and complain less about what we don’t have. Why worry about things that might happen if we can’t change it anyway. Worries are killers. Psychologists love people that worry. Without them they would be jobless. The drugs industry would miss a large proportion of their symptoms medications if there were no worriers. Oprah Winfrey said “Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough” and Oscar Wilde added “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars” Two total different views. I like this one most of all: Marilyn Monroe – “I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.” Nevertheless we made it into 2016 and we have an important year ahead of us. If the philosophy of Mahatma Ghandi is true than the future is bright, we may need to wear shades. Ghandi - “I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always”.

The APPROACH magazine team wishes their loyal advertisers and readers a wonderful 2016. May all your dreams come true and may closed doors open for you.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

The

Mekong River and the

UNESCO

World Heritage Site at

Wat Phou

B

ANGKOK, Thailand: River boat cruises are such a convenient and comfortable way to travel. My journey this trip would take me to the Mekong basin, an area that has held a special fascination for me, one that I never tire from exploring, there are new discoveries aplenty. I was to travel aboard Mekong Cruise's river vessel 'Vat Phou', a 3D2N journey on the mighty Mekong River. A journey that commenced in Bangkok. After a short 65 minute flight to Ubon Rachathani, my voyage continued overland for two hours to the Thai-Laos border at Chong Mek near Pakse, where my friends and I joined the boat for the first time. Our home for the next 3 days. Originally a working boat, a ferry that carried teak wood between Vientiane and the south of Laos, in 1993 the Vat Phou was converted into a luxury floating hotel, cruising the Mekong river. The Vat Phou is 34 metres long, and powered by diesel engine, with 12 cabins (each with air conditioning and private bathrooms) and 15 staff aboard. Oriental in style, I particularly enjoyed relaxing on a comfy chair on one of the two open decks — one forward and one astern. The forward upper deck with rattan armchairs, sofas and lounges, was perfect for me — lying back to read a book 12

or check my emails (WiFi onboard), taking photographs of life along the river or just having 40 winks. I so enjoyed the ever changing river scenery and a peak at life as we passed leisurely by, cold Lao beer in hand. After years of isolation, Laos is now one of the most laid back SE Asian destinations. With a well-preserved culture, stunning natural environment and friendly people. Life in Laos still revolves around tradition and we experienced riverfront life unchanged over generations. The Mekong opens up at Si Phan Don (meaning literally ‘four thousand islands’). It’s an archipelago of tranquil islands popular with travellers for cycling, swimming, boat cruises, kayaking, and dolphin spotting. The Mekong is truly one of the great rivers of the world, stretching 4,352 kms (2,703 miles) from Tibet to the South China Sea. The meandering Mekong links Indochina's rich cultures as it flows through six nations China; Myanmar (Burma); Laos; Thailand; Cambodia and Vietnam. One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Wat Phou temple at Champasak. Wat Phou (temple-mountain) is a ruined Khmer Hindu temple complex in southern Laos. It is located at the base of mount Phu Kao, some 6 km from the Mekong river in

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Champasak province. Wat Phou is considered one of the oldest archaeological sites in Laos. One temple in the site was constructed around the 5th century but most buildings found in the complex are from the 11th to 13th centuries. Like other notable Khmer architecture in SE Asia, it was constructed using sandstone, laterite and bricks. The temple has an ancient and direct link to another famous landmark and UNESCO site - Angkor Wat to the south west.

and stone carvings on the rocky outcrops and boulders. An elephant and crocodile carving are very distinct. The crocodile stone has acquired some notoriety as being possibly the site of an annual human sacrifice described in a 6th-century Chinese text in pre-Angkorian times. The story is lent some plausibility by the similarity of the crocodiles dimensions to those of a human.

Wat Phou has been an active temple for more than 1000 years. Buddhism replaced Hinduism in Laos, in the mid 13th century. The temple has a unique structure, in which the elements lead to a shrine where a linga (representation/sign) dedicated to Lord Shiva was bathed in water from a mountain spring, believed by many to be holy water. (During our visit I saw local women collecting the water in plastic bottles). The site later became a centre of Theravada Buddhist worship, which it remains today. Off the main walkway a path leads up to smaller temples Andrew J Wood has been a long time resident of Thailand for two decades. A lecturer, writer and former hotel General Manager, Andrew is a Director of Worldwide Destinations Asia Co Ltd, and past President of Skal International Thailand. January 2016 APPROACH

With her pre-bop piano style, cool but sensual singing, and fortuitously photogenic looks, Diana Krall took the jazz world by storm in the late ‘90s. By the turn of the century she was firmly established as one of the biggest sellers in jazz. Her 1996 album, All for You, was a Nat King Cole tribute that showed the singer/pianist’s roots, and since then she has stayed fairly close to that tradition-minded mode, with wildly successful results.

Krall got her musical education when she was growing up in Nanaimo, British Columbia, from the classical piano lessons she began at age four and in her high school jazz band, but mostly from her father, a stride piano player 16

Krall attended the Berkley College of Music on a music scholarship in the early ‘80s. After releasing her first album, Krall was signed to GRP for her second album, Only Trust Your Heart. When I Look in Your Eyes followed in 1999, which became an international best-seller and earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. In 2003, Krall married iconic British rock musician Elvis Costello. A year later, she issued The Girl in the Other Room, of which some songs were co-written by Costello. She gave birth to twin sons in December of that year. FOODS OF THAILAND

FOODS of

THAILAND

Thai cooking places emphasis on lightly prepared dishes with strong aromatic components and a spicy edge. It is known for its complex interplay of at least three and up to four or five fundamental taste senses in each dish or the overall meal: sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and spicy.

Thai cuisine is one of the most popular cuisine in the world. In 2014, seven of Thailand’s popular dishes made it to the list of the “World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods (Readers’ Pick)”— a worldwide online poll of 35,000 people by CNN International.

20

APPROACH January 2016

Thailand had more dishes on the list than any other country. They were Tom Yum Goong (4th), Pad Thai (5th), Som Tam (6th), Massaman Curry (10th), Green Curry (19th), and Thai Fried Rice (24th) and Moo Nam Tok (36th).

FOODS OF THAILAND

Our first “APPROACH” is to types of rice and noodles.

Rice Rice forms the backbone of the Thai kitchen. It is such an integral part of the diet that a common Thai greeting is “kin khao reu yang?” which literally translates as “Have you eaten rice yet? Thai farmers historically have cultivated tens of thousands of rice varieties. The traditional recipe for a rice dish could include as many as 30 varieties of rice. That number has been drastically reduced due to genetic modifications. Non-glutinous rice is called khao chao “princely rice”. The type, indigenous to Thailand, is the highly prized, sweet-smelling jasmine rice - khao hom mali. This naturally aromatic long-grained rice grows in abundance in the patchwork of paddy fields that blanket Thailand’s central plains.

Noodles There are 9 different noodles used for soups or stir-fried dishes. The main ingredient in noodles is rice flour but other wheat flours are used as well. There are thin – wide – tiny and hand rolled rice flour noodles whereas Chinese wontong is made of egg and wheat noodles and woon seng is a mung bean noodle.

Some of the dishes that we will present in our next issues will be : Different variations of Fried Rice such as fried rice with chicken - shrimp seafood and pork

Kanom Jeen - a fermented rice noodles dish alongside different types of curries

Famous Thai soups such as Tom Yum Goong - a spicy national dish, Tom Ka Gai - Chicken coconut soup.

Noodle dishes such as Pad Thai rice noodles stir-fried with chicken or shrimp.

Thai snacks - Hoy Tod - Oysters fried in an omelette, Guay Thiew Lod - flat noodles stuffed with pork or sea food.

Desserts such as sticky rice with mango, tapioca squiggles in coconut milk, ginko nuts and Chao Guay Chinese jelly. January 2016 APPROACH

THAI NATURE

The

Cuckoo Centropus Bengalensis

By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The Bengal cuckoo (Centropus bengalensis), also known under the synonym Cuculus bengalensis is a species within the family of cuckoos (Cuculidae) of the kind of spur cuckoos (Centropus). The English name of the Bengal cuckoo is; Lesser/Greater Coucal. The Bengal cuckoo is similar in size and appearance to the Chinese spur Cuckoo (Centropus sinensis) and can easily be confused with this type. However, the Bengal cuckoo is slightly smaller and duller and almost a kind of dirtier colored than the Chinese spur Cuckoo (Centropus sinensis).

Appearance and Dimensions The Bengal cuckoo is a fairly large bird and reaches a body length of about 38 to 42 centimeters. He shows a striking resemblance to the Archaeopteryx*. (Archaeopteryx is literally translated “Old feather”. He is a very early prehistoric bird and dated about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period. During this period, in addition to Archaeopteryx many dinosaurs lived too. The first skeleton of Archaeopteryx, which was found, was originally described, due to the poorly conserved feathers, as a small dinosaur genus Compsognathus. It has been long accepted that Archaeopteryx was a transitional form between birds and reptiles, and it is the earliest known bird. The skin is thick and dark. The inside hind claw, which is located on the hind toe is almost straight and extended. The plumage is provided with hard stems and flags, and acts mostly stringy. It is extensively colored, mostly black, maroon, or until light brown and white, sometimes covered with white stem strokes. The long and wide 36

APPROACH January 2016

tail is also blackish. The neck and the throat are black colored and distributed with white isolated stem strokes. The wings are similar short as in the Coua’s (Coua). The secondaries and primaries are tinted maroon to cinnamon. Furthermore, the run is similar long as the one of silk cuckoos (Coua), while the slightly curved beak is vigorously, almost bulbous and is of black color. The iris of the eye is showing a reddish tint. The larynx is located in the area of the bronchial tubes and not in the trachea. The black strong legs and feets can be used masterfully to creep, or for climbing through tightest grass maze and as well be used through leaf and vine tangles. After the youth dress follows a first year dress, distinguished by the age dress, mostly rich brown cross bands, this is unique with the cuckoos (Cuculidae). The nestlings have a red tongue with a black ending and open as the passerines, (Passeriformes) their beaks wide, while feeding.

Way of life Unique are the ventriloquist mix calls which carry more than one and a half kilometers far away. The lure consists of a snap that sounds like a tongue clicking. The antiphons consist of three-syllable “huok” calls, which then end in a series of “logokok, logokok, logokok”. In case of excitement, the Bengal cuckoo can produce

THAI NATURE three to four seconds long rows of “hu”- calls, then immediately followed by a second series. Each of this call series, consists of up to 25 individual notes.

(Arthropoda) he eats snails (Gastropoda), amphibians (Amphibia), lizards (Lacertidae), snakes (Serpentes) and small birds (Aves).

The first tones sound as if they were the result of an explosion, the last notes sound a bit quieter then. These sounds like pouring water from a bottle.

Reproduction

Just as his cries and his songs are unique, so are the movements of the Bengal cuckoo unique. He is able to move with a powerful and skillful jumping in the branches. Sometimes he moves like a parrot on a branch in the way, that the two front toes are put inward, in the most classic way. He does this walk with great skill and balancing with never tight fitted wings. The flight image of a Bengal cuckoo is more akin of that of a pheasant.

Distribution The Bengal cuckoo is widespread, but still a rare bird. The distribution area is India, China, Taiwan, and the entire South East Asian region. The species inhabits marshy terrain and sticks there like most spur cuckoos (Centropus), usually close to the ground, in tall grass or in the undergrowth and on slopes. The Bengal cuckoo can be encountered even at altitudes of over 1,000 meters.

Nuitrition The Bengal Cuckoo feeds mainly on arthropods (Arthropoda), including Ensifera (Ensifera), Grasshopper (Caelifera), ants (Formicidae), millipedes (Myriapoda) and scorpions (Scorpiones). In addition to the arthropods

The nest is usually spherical, but it can also resemble a crow’s nest, which then usually looks cup-shaped. It is usually hidden under grass stalks and has a diameter of about 35 centimeters. It is externally constructed with branches, leaves and grasses and the inside lined out with green leaves. From the side an opening leads in to this ball shaped nest. The female lays two to five white eggs, which are coated with a thick, like a dermis acting limestone epidermis.. Incubation of the eggs takes about 14 days. The eggs are alternately warmed by the male and by the female. The nestlings are covered shortly before hatching with elongated tips with closed spring sheaths. This development is called premature Hedgehog Stadium. When the nestlings are threatened by natural predators, they deter the enemies by an unpleasant odor and hissing. They also choke off a black liquid, which causes a vomiting irritation.

Endangering and protection The Bengal cuckoo today, is not an endangered bird species. The global range of the populations extends approximately 10 million square kilometers. The Bengal cuckoo is most commonly found in many parts of this large area. Only in a few regions he appears rarely or only sparsely.

MONEY AFFAIRS

Spreading YOUR

Portfolio? Do you still want to leave your money in the bank?

A

t this time of year many investors look at their portfolio and wonder if they made the correct decisions in 2015. If you were in the markets you had a chance. Just compare a portfolio of say 250,000 sterling on deposit v in the market. Would you get 2% in the bank? I’m not sure but let’s say you did you would have received an income last year of 5,000 pounds or 250,000 Baht approx. That’s about 22,000 Baht a month. The same money in the market let’s say some in Japanese equities as last year was a good one for those judicious enough to have picked Japan, and some in UK smaller companies which also had a decent year. Legg Mason Japanese equity returned 41.3% year to date writing this in early December. Franklin smaller companies return at the same date 23%. Imagine your total portfolio was spread equally over these two funds you could have had an income after charges of 30%. 30% of 250,000 sterling is 75,000 sterling which works out at 312,500 Baht a month. Here’s the reality though. No one can 40

APPROACH January 2016

manage their portfolio retrospectively as I have just done. Had you invested in Latin America you could have lost a packet in 2015. That’s not the point though - the point I’m trying to make is that if you keep your money in the bank on deposit despite creeping interest rate rises, you are guaranteeing a frugal existence for 2016. Very few would spread all their portfolio assets over two funds like the example I’m giving but surely you can see that by clever fund selection by an experienced and regulated fund manager you are in the game. Remember that markets must work otherwise we are all doomed. When

you invest in any major blue chip company you are investing not just to make a profit for yourself but for that to happen all the thousands of workers in that company must derive an income to support themselves and their families. There is a myriad choice of ethical funds available today which do well and in truth the only reason for staying in deposit funds is fear. Do you want to look through the curtains at life passing you by this year or do you want to be a healthy participant? thailandexpatfinance@yahoo.com

THAI LEGAL

Thailand’s

Legal

System Courtesy of: Thai Laws.

Knowing Thailand’s Legal System Thailand laws follow the pattern of civil law countries of conventional Europe. When a dispute is brought before the judge, the court will decide a case based on an interpretation of the statutory provisions. The court’s interpretation is not as broad as that of a court in a common law country and unlike a common law court; its decision will not develop a body of law. Although, interpretations by the highest courts (Dika Court or Supreme Court) become precedent under the doctrine of stare devices. Thailand laws derive from two major sources; the legislative and executive branches of both central and local governments. The judicial decisions are not law because they apply to an individual; notwithstanding the fact that that the court will normally adhere to precedent for subsequent cases with the same situation in order to attain stability and fairness. Reversal of precedent based on decisions however does not happen very often.

of the Act. For example a Royal Decree to revise the tax rates under the Revenue Code.

Codes - The civil and commercial code, penal code, civil and Criminal Procedure Codes are well known features of civil law countries legal system. Initially, codified law consisted of multiple chapters of subject matter, but this is no longer necessary.

Cabinet Resolutions - Cabinet Resolutions have

no binding effect but will influence the Government Agencies in the enforcement or interpretation of rules and regulations.

Municipal Ordinances - Building, health and city planning codes are examples of local government laws.

Foreign Judgment - Thailand does not recognize foreign

judicial judgments. A party may not enforce a judgment adjudicated in a foreign country and a new proceeding must be initiated.

We distinguish among others the principal However foreign arbitrate awards are recognized legislature forms and enforceable under the Arbitration Act of B.E.

Constitutional Law - A constitutional based law defines 2530 (A.D. 1987); providing that such arbitrate award the powers and the relationship of the three branches of Government to each other and the relationship between the Government and citizens in regards to fundamental rights and responsibilities.

Royal Decree - A Royal decree is promulgated by the

HUA HIN I

n recent years, Hua Hin has become known as the playground of middle class Thais. Some of these visitors spend time checking out property in the area, which spawned a budget condominium market for units costing below THB 2 million each. These units are mostly located inland and/or in the Cha-am area. Cha-am is now considered a crowded area, with many new condominium projects of over 800 units each being developed. Land plots with sea views in the more private areas of Hua Hin are becoming scarce; thus, the prices of beachfront and sea view condominiums will increase as the supply shortage becomes more acute. Nowadays, wealthy Thais have turned to the area further down in Khao Tao since the area remains private and peaceful, and only 10 kilometres from the Hua Hin market. The upscale condominium area shifted to Khao Tao, with a few projects being launched. However, beachfront condominium projects with unit sea views have sold very well; buyers were mostly wealthy Thais who bought the properties as their second holiday homes. Although the Hua Hin residential market is overwhelmingly driven by Thai purchasers who are looking for a second home or a holiday property near Bangkok, the other buyer groups are expatriates and foreign retirees from Europe. Additionally, Hua Hin’s seaside destination has recently drawn interest from Chinese buyers who are seeking a second residential property in Asia. With bold projects such as Mahasamutr and other upper level high quality projects, Hua Hin is gearing up for growth. Due to favourable factors such as the Thai government’s plan to promote Hua Hin and Cha-am as the new seaside resort 44

destinations for foreigners, and infrastructure development plans for a high-speed train link and special highway no.8 project, which will improve connectivity between Bangkok and Hua Hin. Other retail and commercial, investments are also being planned in the area to serve the increasing number of tourists. Projects including Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall; Botaneo, The Lifestyle Promenade; an underwater museum; and Venezia Hua Hin, Vana Nava Water Jungle Park and the ATP worthy international Tennis and football centre, all contribute towards a modern desirable tourist and investor destination.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Happy Healthy

By Sasha C Your brain involves in everything you do, from thinking, to feeling to acting. It’s the vital organ that involves in your memory, observation, judgment, personality and character. When our brains get healthier, we are likely to be happier, healthier, wiser, wealthier, more creative and more flexible. The human brain is the most complex organ in the human body and probably the most complex creation present in the universe. It uses 20% of the total calories consumed, despite the fact that it only represents 2% of the total body weight. The number of neurons in the brain is estimated to be 100 billion, which is about 15 times of the total human population on earth. Brain information also moves at an impressive 260 miles per hour. Brain aging rate can be either accelerated or decelerated according to one’s diet and lifestyle. However, the truth

is while we all know how important our brains are, many people tend to not think about regular “brain-care” simply because we do not see them! Unlike being overweight or having bad skin which would quickly draw attention from oneself and others, the only possibility to check the health of the brain is to have a brain scan. While the Alzheimer’s disease rate is expected to triple over the next two decades, there is still no cure. Therefore the best prevention is to minimize factors that can cause damage to the brain including: Brain Injury - Unhealthy Diet – Obesity - Drugs & Alcohol & Smoking - High Blood Pressure Diabetes - Environmental Toxins - Sleep Deprivation & Sleep Apnea - Lack of Exercise and Stress & Negative Thoughts

8 Tips for Happy Healthy Brain 2. Learning new skills

1. Positive Social Connections People are contagious so if you find and spend more time with positive and healthy people, you would naturally pick up their vibes, lifestyles and attitude. 50

APPROACH January 2016

To improve brain function and keep your brain healthy, you need to learn skills that are new to you. Learning a new language is a new skill, and would yield a different effect on the brain from learning a new pitch in baseball when you already know how to pitch. For the highest benefit, try learning new activities you’ve never done before!

Alzheimer’s. It is best to aim to get an average of 8 hours a night.

6. Body Movement While any exercise helps to improve overall blood circulation, the inversions (poses in which the heart is held higher than the head) practiced in Yoga increase the blood flow to the brain, giving it more oxygen and making the brain function faster and better. Research also shows that dancing is one of the best physical activities that offer protection against dementia.

3. Healthy & Toxin-Free Diet This is obvious: your brain needs nutrients just like the other cells in your body. If your diet is unbalanced, you may want to consider a multivitamin and mineral complex and an omega-3 fatty acid supplement to help make up a few of the essentials. Some foods such as eggs, walnuts, avocadoes, cruciferous veggies and wild salmon are believed to be the “brain food”.

7. Meditation

4. Maintaining Ideal Weight Most people are aware that obesity and weight issues are becoming the worldwide epidemic, and many know that diets don’t work. But did you know that as your weight goes up, your brain shrinks and has greater trouble functioning? That’s right…as your body gets bigger, your brain gets smaller.

5. Sleep You really are harming your brain when you don’t get enough ZZZ. Sleeping less than seven or eight hours a night can lower the blood flow to the brain, hence has been linked to cognitive decline, memory loss and possibly even

Harvard neuroscientists have found that the brain can physically change after only 8 weeks of daily meditation for about half an hour a day. The four regions of the brain were found thickening, and they were involved mainly in learning, cognition memory, empathy, and compassion. Meanwhile, the Amygdala - the “fight or flight” or the “anxiety, fear, and stress” part of the brain became smaller.

8. Positive Mindset & Gratitude What is gratitude? It is the practice of being thankful, or literally “counting your blessings”, both by taking note of things to be grateful for, and expressing that gratitude to others when applicable. A brain that is experiencing gratitude, specifically gratitude focused on a specific person - i.e. thanking other people for something they’ve done for you is flooded with positive chemicals of a unique kind. The simplest practice, which can be done before going to bed every night, is to write down three things that you are grateful for. This alone can effectively reduce stress and increase the level of happiness.

KIDS & EDUCATION

Intellectual Development, Learning and Teaching Styles L

earning styles is a term that refers to different ways in which we learn, process, and retain information. All young children learn through meaningful hands-on experiences - through touching, doing, and moving. And children also learn through seeing and hearing. As you observe your child, you will begin to identify strengths and preferences that tell you something about your child’s preferred learning style.

Types of Learning Styles These are the four main types of learning styles:

Visual (learn through seeing) Auditory (learn through hearing) Tactile (learn through touch) Kinesthetic (learn through doing and moving) Visual learners learn through seeing. Children who are visual processors tend to observe a parent’s or teacher’s body language and facial expressions for content and learn through demonstrations and descriptions. They tend to have well-developed imaginations and often think in pictures. Too much movement or action in a classroom may cause distraction for them. For older children who read, written instructions may help clarify verbal directions.

You want to foster your child’s strengths, but remember that it helps to challenge him to grow as well. Your child can excel in a variety of areas. Therefore, offer a variety of experiences to help your child develop new strengths and interests that will broaden his or her understanding of the world. 54

APPROACH January 2016

Auditory learners learn through listening.Children who are auditory processors learn through participating in discussions and talking things through. Verbal directions may help clarify instructions or written information. Too much noise may be distracting and children with this strength may learn best in a quiet environment. Tactile learners learn through touch. Children who are more tactile prefer activities or projects that allow them to use their hands. Your child may prefer doodling or drawing to aid memory.

KIDS & EDUCATION Kinesthetic learners learn through moving and doing. Children who are more kinesthetic learn through physical sensations and may have trouble sitting still for long periods. A hands-on approach that allows your child to actively explore her physical world helps her learn best.

How Can You Support Your Child’s Learning Style? Parents and teachers have a tremendous influence on children. Understanding how a child learns can improve how we teach them. Early childhood programs are often organized in a way that supports the range of children’s strengths and needs. This includes having: Adequate periods for movement Group circle and music time Learning centers in the classroom that include a myriad of experiences (for example, reading corner, block area, manipulatives/fine motor area, outdoor play, and art) This supports participation of children with a wide range of learning styles, while also exposing children to experiences they may not typically seek out.

How Can You Determine Your Child’s Learning Style? The best way to learn about your child’s learning style is to observe what he or she is doing. Actions, interests, and preferences will provide information about how he or she is processing information. If your child has developmental delays, you may find that you often focus on what your child isn’t yet doing. Instead, try to focus on his strengths and favourite activities. All children, even the most challenged, have interests and preferences. Identifying these helps increase a child’s motivation for learning.

As adults, we can help children better understand their strengths and individual differences, while supporting challenges. You can seek out real-world experiences that extend your child’s learning. For example, if your child is interested in fish and aquatic life, visit an aquarium. Your child will retain more information and develop a broader understanding of the world if information is meaningful and presented in a way that meets his or her individual learning style.

Speak with family members and your child’s team to develop an inventory of toys, objects, and activities that are meaningful for your child. Ask yourself questions like these: What types of toys does he/she prefer? Does he/she prefer quiet activities or lots of movement? Does he/she like to read books and draw pictures? Does he/ she prefer to be shown how to do something rather than being told verbally? Is he/she active? Does she like to move and participate in more active activities?

BANGKOK MOTOR EXPO DECEMBER 2015

The Bangkok Motor Show was held in December 2015….and Hybrids rule. The Thai automotive market always looks forward to the annual Thailand Motor Expo at the Impact Challenger Convention Center. A number of models and variants were unveiled during this event. The spotlight is on the Hybrids with a few exceptions. Hybrids will be seen increasingly on our and global roads in future. However, 2015 was a critical year for the Thai market after suffering from a slump in local demand for new vehicles, as the economy has suffered from financial and economic setbacks.

Some of the Hybrid highlights of the Expo:

Nissan Navarra

Nissan

Mitsubishi unveiled its all-new Triton pickup truck

Nissan presented its next generation NP300 Navara pickup. Nissan had spent some $100 million on a new Navara pickup assembly plant which started production in July this year. Under the bonnet of the standard version, resides either a 2.5 litre DOHC four-cylinder petrol or a 2.5 litre DOHC four-cylinder turbodiesel. The diesel engine’s turbocharger is electrically actuated, and there are two states of tune: 161 hp at 3,600 rpm and 403 Nm of twist at 2,000 rpm, and 188 hp and 450 Nm . The engines are connected to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed auto (!) with manual override. The Almera. The compact car is a space giant with ample leg room in the back seat with the front seats fully drawn back, which no other cars have unless you buy a Mercedes S class. Under the hood a very economical 1,2 litre engine, 79 bhp, claiming no exciting results but low fuel mileage and a silent drive with a stepless automatic transmission at a bargainprice in comparison to its competitors.

model. Dubbed as the Strada.

Mitsubishi has been one of the best vehicle manufacturers of all-time. It is famous for producing cars economical as well luxurious ones. People have never been disappointed with their makings. The 2016 Mitsubishi Mirage is the master piece of the legendary makers. It will be seen with some very impressive changes from the outside, inside and in the performance as well with the Strada. At the heart of the all-new Strada is an improved version of Mitsubishi’s Di-D engine. For the lower variants, they produce 136 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 324 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm.

MOTORING

Honda City Hybrid

Honda Jazz Hybrid Mazda 2

Honda Thailand, meanwhile, held the regional debut of the all-new and much-anticipated HR-V model.

Mazda unveiled its Mazda 2 model.

The highly anticipated Honda City Hybrid has been unveiled in Japan, where it will be badged as the Honda Grace – a hybridonly model. This is the same hybrid sedan model announced at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, which has since been confirmed for the Thai market. Little has been revealed regarding what’s under the hood, other than that it’s a Sport Hybrid i-DCD (Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive) unit. It’s more than likely that it will be the same package offered on the Jazz Hybrid and Vezel/HR-V Hybrid models – a 110 PS/134 Nm 1.5 litre i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle engine and a 29.5 PS/160 Nm electric motor built into a seven-speed twin-clutch transmission.

Mazda 2 Sedan will let customers put some junk in the trunk of its car with the introduction of a new four-door model. Both models will be sold with the Sky Activ-D 1.5 diesel in Thailand, which gives them lower taxes under the government’s low-emission, compact car incentive plan. According to a previous rumour, a gasoline-fuelled mill could join the line-up eventually, too.

Toyota Prius Hybrid

Toyota Prius

Lexus NX 300h Hybrid

Lexus NX 300h Hybrid Take a ride that’s nothing short of extraordinary. The NX Hybrid has been specially tuned to deliver increased ride comfort and handling stability, with the trademark hybrid exhilaration. Premium design elements within the NX Hybrid truly make it a feast for the senses. Overall the NX is generally impressive. However, the muchballyhooed turbocharged NX 300h faces an arduous task of standing out from the crowd when it comes to fuel economy and performance. The 33-mpg NX 300h hybrid overcomes those hurdles with the best fuel economy of any small crossover and delivers performance not expected from a hybrid. Total system output of the engine and motor is 194 horsepower.

With the new Prius’ unveiling, it appears Toyota has gotten it right, from the exterior at least. The familiar wedge and tapering windows front-to-rear are present and accounted for, but complemented with additional character creases in the front end, door panels and rear flanks, and LED headlights. For the most part, the new Prius looks like a conventional liftback sedan. The Toyota Vios was made to be a city car that can go into narrow streets with an agility and quickness. Some changes are made in the exterior and the interior but the engine will stay the same. Under the hood, the 2016 Toyota Vios will offer two choices of engine. The first engine is the 1.5 liter inline DOHC engine that can produce 108 horse powers at 6000 rpm and 104 lb-ft of torque. The second option of engine is the 1.3 liter inline 4 DOHC engine that can produce 85 horse powers with 90 lb-ft of torque. Both of the engines will be paired with 5 speed manual transmission gear box or 6 speed automatic transmission gear box.

The future of

FORMULA1 Formula 1 is the ultimate gladiatorial sport, of which the future we envisage will be a high tech, high performance showcase that excites fans like no other sport.”

T

he likely scenario is, F1 will continue with the same fundamental architecture as the current engine - a 1.5-litre V6 turbo, but with only a kinetic energy recovery system on the rear axle, and something called an e-booster to use exhaust energy to increase engine output and or Hybrid engines. Formula 1 has moved a step closer to the return of 1000 horsepower turbo cars. There is a belief that the 1000bhp target could be achieved without the need for a total redesign of the current turbo V6 engines nor a complete new engine formula.

Instead, an increase of the fuel flow rate, higher revs, minor design changes such as to crank firing, plus increasing the maximum fuel allowance beyond 100kg, would be enough for the current engines to hit the 1000 bhp target! With the futuristic McLaren MP4-X ( Honda powered) and Ferrari concept race car, Both wanted to peer into the future and imagine the art of the possible. They have combined a number of F1’s key ingredients - speed, excitement and performance, with the sport’s emerging narratives - such as enclosed cockpits to enhance driver safety, and hybrid power technologies.”

The McLaren- Honda F1 Concept It looks visually striking, but it is beneath the skin where the changes are most apparent. MP4-X is designed to harness alternative power sources; the chassis changes shape to adapt to different aerodynamic demands; and it can communicate in the event of a failure or a problem.

F1 Teams and drivers 2016 The F1 driver lineup 2016 is still subject to a lot of rumour and speculation but there are a few contracted spots still in place. Below is the full line-up as we know it now.

Rookie of the year – Max Verstappen Max Verstappen son of F1 driver Jos Verstappen. At a record-breaking 17-years old when he made his debut - he turned 18 in the weekend of the Japanese Grand Prix - he did far more than show he was worthy of a place in F1. Had Melbourne played out the way it was going to before his Toro Rosso’s engine stopped immediately after his pit stop, he would have caused a minor sensation. Sensitivity is in fact what marks out Verstappen as an extraordinary driver. There are many successful F1 drivers who have never completed the sort of moves Verstappen pulled off in just his third Grand Prix several times. From a long way back, he simply ambushes the car ahead, takes the other guy by surprise. Verstappen is an amazing talent.
