Thai New Year - Songkran We have Western and Chinese New Year behind us so now it will be Thai New Year as of the 13th of April. Not the counting, that starts on January the first. The Songkran celebration is rich with symbolic traditions. The morning begins with merit-making. Visiting local temples and offering food to the Buddhist monks. On this specific occasion, performing water pouring on Buddha statues is considered an iconic ritual for this holiday – it represents purification and the washing away all of their sins and bad luck. As a festival of unity, people who have moved away usually return home to their loved ones and elder family members. As a way to show respect, younger people often practice water pouring over the palms of elders’ hands. On the same occasion, paying reverence to ancestors is also an important part of Songkran tradition. Some streets may be closed for traffic, but I never experienced this in Hua Hin. Young and old, participate in this tradition by splashing water on each other. More importantly, traditional parades are held, where cars are decorated with traditional ornaments. Powder is also thrown at participants. Be careful as bad eye infections may result of powder in your eyes. It is a lot of fun and one certain resident of Khao Takiab (Sam S.) used to pull me out of the car and shampoo my head. We cooled off with a cold beer afterwards. It is a lot of fun and traditional except for the high powered water rifles. Stay safe, have fun and beware of these guns.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND
South West Coast of Thailand THE ANDAMAN COAST Driving down from Bangkok or Hua Hin, on Highway 41, it switches from the east flank of the Thailand peninsula to the Andaman coast and enters a different country side: nourished by rain nearly all the year round, the vegetation down here is lushly tropical, with forests reaching up to 80m in height, and massive rubber, palm-oil and coconut plantations replacing the rice and sugar-cane fields of central Thailand.
Winding roads start along the coast as soon as you reach Chumpon, direction Ranong. Once we reached Ranong our coastal journey started. The Andaman Sea laps the most stunning beautiful islands in the country, not to mention its finest coral reefs. We continued on highway 4 to the small town of Khura BuriI, 110km south of Ranong. It is the main departure point for the magnificent national park island chain of Ko Surin, which offers empty beaches and decent snorkelling and bird-watching. You have a chance to participate in typical village life at homestays in mainland coastal communities. Most travellers use the town just as a staging post or lunch break en route to the Surin islands. The main pier for boats to the islands is just 7.5km away, and Khuraburi’s tour agents sell 12

boat tickets and offer transport to the pier. The local area is very scenic, both offshore and inland. Our trip takes us from Khura Buri to Takuapa which we reach in the early evening and took a nightful rest at the Motive Cottage Resort where we paid 1,400 Baht for a Deluxe Double Room.
The old quarter of Takua Pa in Phangnga is a poignant reminder of a glorious chapter in its history Overlooked by most travellers who pass it off as rather quiet, the old town area of Takua Pa district in Phangnga in fact has much to shout about for it still resonates with a glorious chapter from history dating back a century, now almost forgotten.
TRAVEL IN THAILAND Takua Pa New Town is a typical bustling Thai town with a large daily indoor market selling mainly fresh food, meat, fruit, vegetables, fish and seafood. It also has a bus station which is the main interchange for public buses, both local and those coming from Surathani on the East Coast, Ranong and Bangkok to the North and through to Phuket passing through Khao Lak . There are good restaurants overlooking the river. We took a trip upriver on a small “ two person plus boatman/guide longtail boat” through the unspoiled countryside, observing the wildlife that abounds there and stopping off for a picnic which we did on the river bank. The next day, we decided to continue to Phuket from where we would explore the other Andaman Islands. We found that the water quality is much nicer than the Gulf all along the East coasts. Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and the region’s major resort destination for families, package tourists and divers; its dining, shopping and entertainment facilities are second to none, but the high-rises and hectic consumerism dilute the Thai-ness of the experience. The island of Ko Yao Noi, scenically located within the spectacular bay of Ao Phang Nga, whose scattered karst islets are one of the country’s top natural wonders, best appreciated from a sea-canoe. The Andaman coast’s second hub is Krabi province, rightly famous for its turquoise seas and dramatic islands. Flashiest of these is the flawed but
still handsome Ko Phi Phi, with its great diving, gorgeous beaches and high-octane nightlife. Unlike the Gulf coast, the Andaman coast is hit by the southwest monsoon, which usually generally lasts from the end of May until at least the middle of October. During this period, heavy rain and high seas render some of the outer islands
inaccessible, but conditions aren’t usually severe enough to ruin a holiday on the other islands, or on the mainland, and you’ll get tempting discounts on accommodation. We chose to stay in Phuket overnight and from our hotel we took day trips to the Similan Island for a snorkel / diving adventure. Our accommodation in Phuket was at the Patong Merlin, a place I had stayed many times on my business trips. We got a deal for 4,500 Baht which is very reasonable for this 5 star hotel on Patong Beach . A day trip to Krabi and the famous James Bond Islands ended our trip to the South West of Thailand with a next day drive back to Hua Hin via Surat Thani, Chumpon and Prachuab Khiri Khan.

the CABINET
Celebrates its 20th Anniversary 2016 is a special year for the CABINET Interior Design as it marks the company’s 20th anniversary, which will be celebrated throughout the year with lots of fun events and special promotions. What started in 1996 with 4 staff working out of a small office in Bangkok, providing furniture solutions to mainly Scandinavian businesses, has over the years grown into a full-service interior design company with its own furniture factory and construction company, employing more than 100 staff. The company’s clients range from private home owners wanting a new sofa to property developers, restaurant owners and hotel chains. Services include custommade kitchens and built-in furniture, furniture packages, conceptual design, renovation work, construction and landscaping. APPROACH met up with owners Janeric and

Apinya Hogane at their large showroom/ office in Hua Hin, where interior designers, architects, sales executives and service staff all gather under the same roof. To mark the company’s 20th anniversary much of the Asian-influenced furniture in the showroom has been replaced with a completely new range. We are shown some examples of beautiful dining room and bedroom settings. “The new furniture range is more modern, available in both walnut and oak colour with sleek stainless steel handles and soft- closing drawers, appealling to most buyers, whether they have a big house or a studio condo.” The showroom also displays a number of new sofa models and the own brand of synthetic rattan outdoor HOGANE furniture and is constantly adding more designs and colour options to its range. “HOGANE has been a great success,” Janeric says. “I‘m glad that we can offer
high quality synthetic rattan furniture at affordable prices, which is something that was hard to come by before we launched the HOGANE brand.” The CABINET is already providing kitchens and furniture for most of the upscale developments in the Hua Hin area. They are also designing and furnishing offices, hotels, restaurants and retails shops in Hua Hin, Bangkok and the Rayong area. “This year we are celebrating our 20th anniversary but we don’t reflect that much on the past, there are so many fun projects ahead of us,” “We simply continue to do what we do best, which is providing high quality interior design and furniture solutions to both private home owners and businesses.” Janeric and Apinya welcome everyone to visit the Hua Hin showroom, which is located on Petchkasem road next to the Shell gasoline station.

FOODS OF THAILAND
Desserts
One of the joys of Thailand is the wide variety of snacks, or in Thai, Khanom, available in all the markets. Khanom wan, wan being the word for “sweet. Thai people traditionally didn’t eat sweets for desserts; if they had a dessert at all, it was fruit of some variety. Something sweet might be eaten an hour or so after eating or it might be eaten at any time during the day. This is not so different from how the Thai people treat food in general; for instance, they don’t really have any specific breakfast foods. Breakfast is considered just another meal and anything that is eaten at any other time of the day will also be eaten for breakfast.
Khao Niew Mamuang Mango sticky rice or Khao Niao Mamuang is a Thai dessert made with glutinous rice, fresh mango and coconut milk. It is a traditional Thai food eaten with the hands. It is prepared with glutinous rice, commonly called sticky rice. It is eaten by rolling the rice with the fingers and scooping up mango slices. Contrary with other desserts, mango sticky rice is served warm or at room temperature. The common ingredients used are sticky rice (glutinous rice), coconut milk, salt, palm sugar and mangoes. Slices of sweet mango make this famous sweet and sticky rice dessert from the north of Thailand an absolute delight .
Black Beans in Coconut Milk Black beans in coconut milk is a dessert that Thais enjoy year round, unlike seasonal desserts like mango sticky rice and durian sticky rice. Black beans in coconut milk is versatile enough to have other ingredients added to make variations. If you have sticky rice left-over from mango sticky rice, add a spoon of the sweetened sticky rice to the dessert to get a new texture and flavour. The black beans should be tender without the skin broken. The coconut milk sauce should be slightly purplish, not white and smooth without curds. You should be able to taste the palm sugar sweetness, which is distinct from cane sugar. The palm sugar is creamy and nutty. 22

FOODS OF THAILAND
Chao Kuai – Grass Jelly Grass cake is a jelly which is made by boiling the aged and slightly oxidized stalks and leaves of Mesona chinensis, a type of mint, with potassium carbonate for several hours with a little starch and then cooling the liquid to a jelly-like consistency. Originally a Chinese dish, in Thailand it is normally eaten with ice and natural brown sugar. It is available in various form, size and packages. It is most typically served chilled in a bowl, either by itself or with fruit, but also used in bubble tea. Outside of Asia, however, it is mostly sold in cans or packets in Asian supermarkets.
Bua Loy Nam King
A refreshing break from coconut-heavy Thai sweets (though it’s doubtful such a break is ever required). This sweet originated in China, which might explain why it contains no form of coconut at all. Instead it features mochi-like balls of sticky rice filled with a lightly sweetened black sesame paste, swimming in a hot ginger tea soup. The broth (nam king) is intensely gingery. The Bua Loy (sticky rice flour dumplings) are glossy and toothsome while the black sesame filling is grainy, intense, and rich. Bua Loy Nam King, despite being served piping hot, is always a light and refined snack.
And Fruit! Thai people love to eat fruit! They eat it with nearly every meal and it's available on the street everywhere. So many different varieties of fruit are available in Thailand; for example, Thailand has over 20 different varieties of banana alone! Much of the fruit we enjoy in Thailand is now available all over the world. The country's fertile plains and hot tropical climate, as well as its more temperate northern regions, means that pretty much anything grows here. As a result, few places on earth can claim to have such a plentiful supply of gorgeous tasting fruit. April 2016 APPROACH

The
BOTTLEBRUSH TREE Callistemon
By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus
The Bottlebrush tree (Callistemon) is a genus within the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). The myrtle (Myrtaceae) form a plant family in the order of Myrtle alike plants (Myrtales). The family is divided into two subfamilies and some tribes; total, it comprises of about 131 genera and about 4620 species. They are mainly in Australia (about 85 species) and native to the Neotropics.
In addition to the name-giving myrtle, the myrtle family include (Myrtaceae) species such as clove and eucalyptus species. Many species provide essential oils for perfumery and pharmacy. Some species yield edible fruits some Psidium species (eg, guava) and Campomanesia- and Eugenia. The plant originates from Australia. Few species and their varieties are cultivated as ornamentals. The trivial name Bottlebrush, also "pipe cleaner" or "bottle cleaner", refers to the cylindrical arranged inflorescences flowers.
Description and ecology Callistemon species are defined as evergreen small trees or shrubs. Many species have long, slightly overhanging branches. The alternate arranged leaves are lanceolate or linear and always entire bordered. They contain many essential oils and when rubbed they fragrant lightly aromatic. The leaves are often so positioned, that they face the sun with its narrow side. The flowers are in the axils of small, closely spaced bracts. The individual flowers have only inconspicuous bloom, the most red-coloured and long stamens are striking and 32

stand out more or less vertically from the inflorescence axis. This produces cylindrical inflorescences, resembling a red bottle brush or a red cylindrical cleaner. The anthers are yellow in many species. The inflorescence axis continues its development the above inflorescence with a number of standard leaves. After some time, the next inflorescence will appear, often while the fruits of the old inflorescence are not yet ripe. The nectar-rich flowers are pollinated by birds, which briefly hold on the inflorescence axis below the inflorescence. The ver y woody, hard capsule fruits, often remain closed for several years, and contain many tiny seeds. Only after a bush fire, the fruit capsules open and release the seeds (pyrophyt).
THAI NATURE
Site conditions Most species grow in water-rich locations, such as, along streams or in areas that are regularly flooded.
Sytematics and distribition The Bottlebrush species are originating, especially from the East and Southeast Australia, where they occur, from the tropics to temperate latitudes. Two species are native to Southwestern Australia and four from New Caledonia. The genus Callistemon contains the species of the former genus Melaleuca L: The genus contains 25 to about 37 kinds.
Constituents A study in India showed the leaves of Callistemon yielded an oil: 1,8-Cineole (61.7%), -pinene (24.2%) and menthyl acetate (5.3%) were the major components. Study leaves for essential oil yielded 14 compounds, representing 98.94% of the total oil; the major components were 1,8-cineole (64.53%) and Îą-pinene (9.69%).
Properties Considered antibacterial, anthelminthic, hemostatic, diuretic.
Parts utilized Leaves.
Uses Used as diuretic and for relieving problems of the urinary tract. Used for urinary incontinence and bed-wetting in children. In Jamaica, decoction used as "hot tea" treatment of gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and skin infections.
Antibacterial / Leaves: Study evaluated water and alcoholic extracts of leaves of C. viminalis in vitro against ten pathogenic bacteria. Results showed antibacterial activity against both Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermis, Streptococcus pneumonia) and Gram negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumonia, K. oxytaci, Proteus vulgaricus, Escherichia coli).
Essential Oil from Leaves / Antibacterial / Antioxidant: Study evaluated leaves for antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Essential oil of leaves yielded 14 compounds. Leaf essential oil exhibited the highest antioxidant activity comparable to gallic acid as standard. Essential oil also showed the highest zone of bacterial inhibition compared to standard tetracycline. Crude methanol extract and EA fraction showed significant antibacterial activity. Antimicrobial: Various extracts were tested against eight common bacteria and one fungus. All plant extracts sowed antimicrobial activities against the selected microorganisms; the methanol extract was most effective. The aqueous extract was effective as bactericidal agent against intestinal pathogens.
Studies Anthelminthic activity: In veterinary studies: The anthelmintic activity of the essential oils of Callistemon viminalis against earthworms and tapeworms has revealed it to exhibit in vitro efficacy better than piperazine phosphate. The activity of these oils against hookworms was comparable to that of hexyle resorcinol (Garg & Kasera, 1982).
Insecticidal: Study yielded two novel epimeric compounds, viminadione A and viminadione B, Viminadione A exhibited moderate insecticidal activity. April 2016 APPROACH

MONEY AFFAIRS
Are You
NUTS?
One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. This is particularly appropriate in the investment world.
Almost six years ago now after the worst stock market crash since the 1920’s or, if you prefer in living memory, investors who had been hit hard scrambled for guaranteed products that guaranteed capital and paid a rate of interest above the miserly bank deposit rates. For a while these were popular and who could blame investors for rushing to what they perceived as safety? The banks could only give limited guarantees as the strain on their resources by doing this was too much and they soon withdrew the products. The only way the markets could have gone, despite the Jeremiah’s and their double dip recession was up. Many emerging markets like the BRIC countries (Brazil Russia India & China) had shown growth of over 150 percent in the first two years of recovery. Most other equity funds over the past five years have shown outstanding performance especially when measured against deposit rates. Surely every portfolio should have some of that. But no, many if not most jump out of equities immediately after a crash and stay out until they hit record highs again when in fact their strategy should be the opposite.
Ask any broker when his busiest times and his quietist times are. They will all tell you the same. For those of us who have been in the business for a few decades this is not a new phenomenon. Over the last thirty years I have seen three or four crashes of various strength, none as earth shattering as the last one, that have impacted investors in a negative way. Afterwards most investors behave in a manner that authenticates my assertion about madness. Please talk to your broker. It looks to me that the recovery will continue to now stutter along with volatility and that emerging markets I have already talked about here will have substantial growth this year also. I think now is a great time for future equity performance. Don’t miss out-have at least a small portion of your portfolio in equity markets now. Just keep remembering that if your portfolio is properly constructed you can switch out of speculative funds and switch back into more secure investments. Be innovative and act before catastrophe happens not after.

Thailand Thailand Elite Visas Elite Visas
What is an Elite Privileged Entry Visa (PE)? A privileged Entry Visa is a 20 or 5 year visa for Thailand
Cost of The Elite Entry Visa and 5 year Easy Access Visa For the 20 year Visa, a membership costs 2,000,000 Baht for an individual and 1,000,000 Baht for family members ( Spous) plus a yearly visa renewal fee of 20,000 Baht. The 5 year Visa seems more affordable with 500,000 Baht and 100,000 Baht for family members and no annual renewal fee.
Privileged Entry Visa If you are a member of the Elite Entry Visas, upon arriving Thailand you will get 1 year visa stay. The 90 days reporting or also known as residential reporting will be done by the Elite office. You simply hand over your passport at an Elite office and collect it back once it is done. Members only need to do a stay extension at immigration centre once a year if the stay exceeds 1 year and pay an immigration fee of 1,900 Baht. There is a 20 and a 5 year Elite Visa called the Easy Access Visa. Both visas have certain privileges such as a speedy entry procedure through the fast track service at the airport, discounts at golf courses, discounts at certain malls and stores and complimentary transfer from wherever you live in Thailand to the airport in Bangkok but limited to 254 transports for the Easy Access Visa. Last but not least, you are considered a “Friend “ of Thailand and its government.
The 5 year visa comes down to 8333 Baht a month. The process for getting the Thailand Elite card is very simple, you just e-mail them and they will send you a one page form where you fill in your vitals (name, DoB, address). Scan and e-mail it back to them together with a copy of your passport. When your application is accepted, you will be asked to make a bank transfer for 500,000 Baht and to send the original form together with a 1 inch photo of yourself which they will put on your Thailand Elite card to their office in Bangkok. You then have a choice to either: 1) Have them send your Thailand Elite card and visa to your home address abroad, which you then take to the nearest Thai consulate/embassy for them to put in your passport. 2) Or let them know when you will next be arriving in Thailand, at which point you will be met (if it's at Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui or Chiang Mai airport) by a representative at the gate who will take you through fast track at immigration where you will be given your 5 year visa.
This may not be the solution for everyone, perhaps someone will find this information useful. Contact : Thai Immigration office Bangkok - Address: 7 Chaeng Wattana Lak Si, Bangkok 10210, Thailand Phone:+66 2 141 9889 - http://bangkok.immigration.go.th 36

FINANCIAL
THAILAND FINANCIAL NEWS Joint Venture Management Policies Thailand government is planning to amend the FBA (Foreign Business Act) to change the management of foreign joint ventures and foreign directors from controlling joint venture firms that are majorityowned by Thai shareholders. Currently, foreigners are prohibited to hold more than 49% of the shares in a joint venture for it to qualify as a local company. But the present FBA makes it possible for foreign business partners to control joint ventures in Thailand, as it does not prohibit foreigners from making up the majority of the board of directors. The arrangement has promoted investments in the country for decades, opening activities to foreign investors that would be otherwise restricted to foreign owned companies. A minister and deputy chief of mission of a major Embassy in Thailand said that an amendment restricting foreign control
over joint-venture companies would have a serious impact on existing and future investment. Quote: "If the law is changed, the ownership of a joint venture has to be a Thai national, and the foreign investor may decide to give up foreign ownership or withdraw their business from Thailand." The American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand: “We have been doing business with Thailand for several decades based on mutual trust and mutual friendship, but I am afraid that by changing the basic business environment in Thailand at short notice, companies will lose trust in the Thai business environment in Thailand, Foreign direct investment has been an important element of Thailand's economic development process. The immense foreign currency influx after Thailand's financial liberalization in 1990, helped to increase the country's competitiveness. In the context of the recession and relatively slow recovery after the 1997 crisis.

The tourism development in Thailand and the extension of the duration of the stays favoured the emergence of a new concept of residences, The resort residences.
The resort residences are residential complexes (condominiums or villas) with integrated management. This kind of residence allows investors to purchase in individual units (freehold or leasehold) which will be managed by professionals from the hospitality industry, offering hotel services and rent from few days to several months. Thailand attracts every year almost 29 million tourists coming from four corners of the world. Bangkok, is in the top 5 of the most visited cities in the world. The combination of hospitality, Thai senses of services, the dynamism of tourism and real estate sector, make the resort residences a great way to combine capital appreciation and income. While interest rates are at the lowest, real estate investment 40

allows to generate rental yields from 6% to more than 10% a year. These residences are designed, taking into account their future use, with gain of space, quality services and infrastructures, swimming pool, fitness gym, other common facilitie. Resort residences target different segments of clients in terms of budget and lifestyle. When decide to purchase, it’s important to understand the future economic model of the residence, targeted group of clients, and validate few fundamentals factors as pricing and location. For an investor, this kind of real estate investment can be peace of mind to generate regular income. It adds additional security to the investment as investors own a tangible asset which as well can generate capital appreciation and protect against inflation. The most common way in term of revenue redistribution are : Profit sharing at which the rent is split between the management and the owner with some residences allowing personal use. Rental guarantee: the manager or developer, guarantees a fix rental yield during a period of time. Example: For a 3M Baht investment, an investor can generate approximately depends on the residence from 16,000 Baht to 22,500 Baht a month. Which can offer an additional income to live and retire in Thailand. Besides the pure rental investment aspect, some residences allow a personal use a part of the year, that’s allow to combine lifestyle and rental investments. HEALTH & WELLNESS
Save a life, do something amazing
O-
DONATE BLOOD
B
Transfusing blood to patients with a loss of blood due to accidents or during surgery is a truly life-saving procedure. In Thailand and other Asian countries there are frequent appeals to the foreign community for Blood donations for injured or sick western patients. All countries including Thailand have well developed Blood Banks and it may be of some surprise that they are caught without available blood for these patients. Each time there is a need for blood the patient must have their blood type identified, for if they are given incompatible blood there will be a reaction between the two bloods with terrible consequences. The reason for the shortage is that the distribution of the various types of blood is different in different ethnic groups. There are two factors that differentiate one persons blood from another. The first is the A,B,O system and the other the Rhesus (Rh) system.
Blood Groups A, B, AB, O: This system was discovered by an Austrian Doctor over 100 years ago. In Europe and countries like the US, Canada, Australia and NZ – 48% have type A, 40% type O, 9% type B and 44
APPROACH April 2016
3% type AB. In Thailand the numbers are 40%, 18%, 36% and 5%. These numbers although a little different do not cause any problem as they are close enough so that donors are available in each category. Patients with A blood can accept A or O, B can accept B or O, AB any of the four types and type O can only accept type O blood RHESUS: The Rh system is quite independent of the ABO system. Patients are either Rhesus positive (Rh+) or Rhesus negative (Rh-) and here there is a huge difference in numbers. In western countries approximately 15-20% patients have Rh – blood, in Thailand only about 1%.
-
HEALTH & WELLNESS There are some restrictions on who can give blood. You must not be anemic and the presence of some other diseases will disqualify you. If you are on certain medications that will also disqualify you. When you go to the Red Cross to donate, they will screen you for these factors. If you do go to donate, do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before you do and if you take medications in the morning, delay taking them until after donating. It used to be that each hospital took donations but now it is done through the Red Cross. It is good to know your blood type, if you do not know it the next time you are having a blood test, ask them to test for your blood type and to give you this information. You can give Rh- blood to Rh +patients but you cannot give Rh + blood to Rh – patients. Lets put the two sets of stats together and you will see the problem. If we take 1000 foreigners 80 of them will have Ablood, but among the Thai population only 3 in a 1000 will have A- or O- negative blood that the patient can accept. O- negative blood is known as the Universal Donor, you can give this blood to any patient. In an emergency situation where there is not enough time to check the blood type O – is given and Blood Banks just love O- people and beg them to give blood regularly to be sure that there is a ready supply. In the west approx 75 out of a 1000 will have this type of blood but in Thailand only 1 in a 1000. So when you see these appeals for Blood donations it is almost always Rh- blood that they are seeking. Once blood it donated it must be used within about 3 weeks as the blood will deteriorate so the Blood Banks cannot take donations of rare blood types and keep them at hand for long periods. When I was working in China, we kept a record of all the foreigners with Rh- blood and asked them if they would be part of our “walking blood bank” and would come in if we called them. When a patient needs to receive blood, family and friends often volunteer, but unfortunately they may not have the correct blood type and the patient is dependent on people that they have never met to provide blood for them.

KIDS & EDUCATION
Educational Systems in Thailand Bi- Lingual education According to the policies of the Royal Thai Ministry of Education, teaching the Thai curriculum in English (English Program, EP) is possible at Thai schools within the following framework: The pre-primary level provides teaching and learning in English of not more than 50 percent. Primary level (Phratom 1-6, or grades 1-6) provides teaching and learning in English only in the subjects English, mathematics, science and physical education with awareness of knowledge and understanding the subject. Secondary level (Matthayom 1-6, or grades 7-12) provides teaching and learning in English in all subjects except Thai and social science, in parts of Thai law, culture and tradition.
International & Bi-Lingual Education There are 174 international schools in Thailand as of 2015, according to the Office of the Private Education Commission, which regulates the operation of all private schools in the country. As of January 2015, the International Schools Consultancy (ISC) listed Thailand as having 174 international schools. The ISC defines an 'international school' in the following terms. "ISC includes an international school if the school delivers a curriculum to any combination of pre-school, primary or secondary students, wholly or partly in English outside an English-speaking country, or if a school in a country where English is one of the official languages, offers an English-medium curriculum other than the country’s national curriculum and is international in its orientation. Not everybody is either affluent or lives on an expat package and thus, cannot afford the tuition fees of international schools. This page also introduces you to English program (EP) schools, both private and public schools with English programs. Studying there needs – at least – basic knowledge of Thai language since the Thai curriculum requires some subjects to be taught in Thai. 48
APPROACH April 2016
Thai education At elementary levels, students follow eight core subjects each semester: Thai language, mathematics, science, social science, health and physical education, arts and music, technology, and foreign languages. At age 16 (Matthayom 4), students are allowed to choose one or two elective courses. The science program (Wit-Kanit) and the mathematics-English language program (Sil-Kamnuan) are among the most popular. Foreign language programs (Sil-Phasa) (Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and German) for example, and the social science program (sometimes called the general program) are also offered. Both elementary and secondary level have special programs for students called English Program and Gifted Program. In English Program students can learn almost every subject in English except for Thai and Social Studies. The Gifted Program is the Mathematics-Science program.
KIDS & EDUCATION
Thai University admission There are over 150 institutions of higher education in Thailand, both public and private. Many public universities receive financial support from the government for research purposes. Over half of the provinces have a government Rajabhat University formerly Rajabhat Institute and Rajamangala University of Technology, traditionally a teacher training college. On graduating from high school, students need to pass the CUAS (Central University Admission System) which contains 50% of O-NET ( Ordinary National Education Test) and A-NET ( results and the other half of the fourth level GPA (Grade Point Average). In 2008, the newly formed coalition led by the People's Power Party announced more changes to the national curriculum and university entrance system. At present, state-run universities screen 70% of their students directly, with the remaining 30% coming from the central admission system. Students with a GPA and test score lower than required cannot apply for admission to that university. The faculty of engineering requires mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, but the faculty of management requires English and mathematics. This is a departure from the original admission system which requires a score in every subject of the O-net test and academic aptitude test (PAT).
English in everyday life in Thailand, the standard of correct English in the schools is now the lowest in Southeast Asia. In 1997 Thailand was still in the forefront, but by 2001 Laos and Vietnam had caught up, and by mid-2006 were clearly ahead. Thailand produces a "workforce with some of the world's weakest English-language skills." In a recent IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook Thailand was ranked 54th out of 56 countries globally for English proficiency, the secondlowest in Asia. Singapore was third, Malaysia 28th and Korea 46th.
English Language Importance The government has long realised the importance of the English language as a major core subject in schools, and it has been a compulsory subject at varying levels for several decades. Since 2005 schools are being encouraged to establish bilingual departments where the core subjects are taught in English and to offer intensive English language programmes. The use of English in Thailand, while far from being as developed as in the Netherlands, Germany, the Scandinavian countries or the Philippines, is nevertheless slowly increasing through the influence of the media and the Internet. Thai university applicants scored an average 28.34% in English in recent university entrance exams. Notwithstanding the extensive use of and exposure to April 2016 APPROACH

MOTORING
SALON D’AUTOMOBILE GENÈVE
The Geneva Motor Show is held in March every year at the Geneva Palexpo and is widely considered as one of the most important dates on the automotive calendar. The Motor Show gave us a wild ride with an amazing collection of new production and concept cars revealed. The show offered a great mix of new cars, big news stories and general razzamatazz. APPROACH would like to cover just a few revelations.
The 86th Automobile Exhibition in Genève The big reveals at this year's show included the incredible Bugatti Chiron HyperCar. The Audi’s Q2, Honda’s Civic concept, the new Renault Scenic and Volvo’s V90 estate. But that's just a fraction of the new cars that got their first airing at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
Audi Q2
Porsche 911 R
Nissan has laid bare its vision for an electric future at the Geneva Motor Show, which includes a radical new charging infrastructure and new battery technology to deliver a range of more than 340 miles on a charge. The new battery technology is under development. By boosting energy density and performance, the new 60kWh battery is targeted to deliver a range of 341 miles on a single charge.
Audi’s ambition to fill every niche in the car market continued at Geneva. The new Q2 with it´s compact dimensions, bold face and top notch interior ensure this supermini SUV will be winner the world over. It’s available with a range of turbo petrol and diesel engines and – thanks to the VW Group’s versatile MQB platform – four-wheel drive. Cracking. In addition to the £1.9m Bugatti Chiron, Porsche’s new 911 R could be the most scintillating sports car revealed at Geneva. The recipe is mouth-watering, combining the GT3 RS’s 493bhp high-revving 4.0-litre flat-six with a six-speed manual transmission which will accelerate in 3.7-seconds from 0-60mph the performance is still savage. 52
APPROACH April 2016
Nissan IDS - Concept
MOTORING 500 miles. It is powered by a plug-in hybrid arrangement, a pair of electric motors combining with a 300bhp petrol engine to produce 1 megawatt of output. Aerial thrust is provided by a ducted fan at the rear, and a propeller at the end of each retractable wing.
Toyota Verso The Toyota Verso is cheap to run, plus has superb resale values and strong reliability. The new model offers sharper looks, plus better handling and refinement in a bid to take a bigger slice of the MPV market. ‘Efficiency and response are boosted, too. The new Verso is a vastly improved car.’ Complementing the 2.0-litre diesel engine’s responsiveness, economy and lower emissions, maximum torque is delivered from just 1,600rpm, so a gentle squeeze of the accelerator is usually all that’s needed before selecting the next gear.
We don’t know how fast the TF-X will go on road, but once airborne it’ll soar at speeds of 200mph for a distance of up to 500 miles. Which means you could hop from Hua Hin to Bangkok in under 1 hour and to Phuket in under 2 hours. It’s the future we were always promised. We’re in. Start saving!
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
Bughatti Chiron
Mazda 3 Mazda is a relatively small player in the hatchback market, but the Mazda 3 demonstrates that the Japanese firm is doing things right. As a result, we would happily recommend the Mazda 3 to anybody who is looking for a change from the hatchback norm. The Mazda 3 features four engines to choose from in a range of power outputs. There are 1.5 and 2.0-litre petrol and 1.5 and 2.2-litre diesel engines to choose from.
The Future - Flying Cars - Terrafugia TF-X
Supervillains! Spies! Insane billionaires! Good news! The second prototype of the Terrafugia Transition flying car has taken to the skies, converted into a car, then driven around a bit for the very first time. The £183,600 car-o-plane has taken off. Save up to 30% on Fuel Consumption and Increase Output A hydrogen vehicle is a vehicle that uses hydrogen as its on-board fuel for motive power. Hydrogen vehicles include hydrogen fuelled space rockets, as well as automobiles and other transportation vehicles. The power plants of such vehicles convert the chemical energy of hydrogen to mechanical energy either by burning hydrogen in an internal combustion engine. Widespread use of hydrogen for fuelling transportation is a key element of a proposed hydrogen economy. H2 AQUAPOWER HYDROGEN TECHNOLOGY has developed a patented Energy and Environmental Innovation unit which produces hydrogen from pure water and feeds it on demand to a combustion engine´s intake manifold of a motorcar´s engine. Aqua power H2 generates hydrogen gas from H2O and considerably increases the octane value of the fuel mixture to an approximate 140 versus 95 of petrol or 85 of Diesel fuel. It is a completely safe process with importantly reduced emissions.

True Thailand Classic Presented by Chang at Black Mountain Hua Hin, Thailand - March 10 until March 15, 2016 Home favourite Piya Swangarunporn was in contention to produce the shock of The European Tour season so far as he moved to the top of the leader board during the closing stages of the True Thailand Classic Presented by Chang. The World Number 798 does not currently hold a card on The European or Asian Tour but looked very much at home at Black Mountain Golf Club as he picked up eight shots in 14 holes to join Scott Hend at the summit. The Australian turned in 34 to move to 16 under but six birdies and an eagle from Swangarunporn reeled him in, with the duo three shots clear of Belgium's Thomas Pieters. Swangarunporn's best career result came in Hua Hin as he finished in a tie for third at the Black Mountain Masters on The Asian Tour in 2010, and victory here would come in just his second European Tour event.
Hend is a veteran by comparison, having played in 140 tournaments and he is the hunt for his second European Tour title. Pieters used his enormous length off the tee to leave a short wedge in and birdie the first while another big-hitter in Shaun Norris joined him at 12 under as two mighty blows allowed him to eagle the par five second. The two-time winner then holed his bunker shot at the second to join Hend at the top of the leader board but the 2014 Hong Kong Open champion soon moved back ahead with a birdie on the same hole. The lead was back up to two when Pieters dropped a first shot in 39 holes on the third with a three-putt bogey but he picked it straight back up on the fourth, with Hend repeating the trick to restore his cushion.
Swangarunporn had birdies on the second, fourth, sixth and seventh to turn in 32 and move into contention, and when he holed his pitch into the tenth for an eagle, he was just two behind Hend. He was second on his own when Pieters dropped a shot on the eighth and he reduced the gap to one as he produced a confident putt down the slope to birdie the par five 13th. A 40-foot birdie putt on the next followed and the 32 year old was at the summit. Norris and Peter Uihlein were four shots off the lead, with Benjamin Hebert, GrĂŠgory Havret, Joost Luiten and Simon Yates a further shot back. Scott Hend finally won the tournament with 18 under par and a total of 270. He goes to compete in Dubai and travels off with an official prize money of â‚Ź 264,136, approx.. THB 10 million.
