EDITOR’S FOREWORD APPROACH PUBLISHING CO.,LTD.

Editor in Chief Gerard Mosselman Office Manager Pimwee P. (Kob) Spend the weekend and a few days in addition in BKK. It was definitely due as both spouse and kid threatened if I didn´t. For Kids, of course, it is paradise as there is so much to offer. From outside safe playgrounds , parks, inside playgrounds up to snow city with sled rides , skating rinks, you name it. They don´t charge “Farang” prices and seniors like myself get a good discount in contradiction to certain media reports. No use complaining, it is still great here. Live and let live goes for Thailand. No one cares what you wear, whether you shave or not and a fried rice costs 40 baht. As long as you have a visa, pay your car and health insurance you have no greater worries. I called my daughter in law Judith in Holland, she was on the train but was not allowed to talk to me as she was in a “silent” car. Try that in BKK on the sky train. Rain runs our life these days. We need it and it is good for Thailand. Just don’t try driving through deep puddles with a petrol engine as your ignition may get wet and …there you are. A diesel will continue as long as the intake manifold (airfilter) is above water level…but… just don´t try it out. As we slowly but surely APPROACH our high season, I understand that more resident folks are staying in Thailand over the holidays as well, as life in Europe is very expensive and won´t get any cheaper so soon. The Baht is still pretty strong but overvalued. Financial sources whisper an even more favourable exchange rate towards the end of the year for Euros and Pounds. It is worthwhile taking a look at the former “Floating Market” which now has a walking street at night on weekends with vendors and little stores within the compound. There is also another walking street in Kao Tao on the lake side. which is open on Fridays and Saturdays. APPROACH has added a French page for our French languaged citizens.... Please take a look at page 16.

Wild Elephant Reserve L

ocated on the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province only 60 km south from Hua Hin, it is the first marine national park of Thailand. Khao Sam Roi Yot means “The Mountain with three hundred peaks and refers to a series of limestone hills along the Gulf of Thailand with highest one at 605m above the sea level. The northwest corner of the mountain range is called Thung Sam Roi Yot and is mainly freshwater marsh covering nearly 37% of the national park which makes it the largest wetlands area in Thailand. The park is also an attractive destination for its rich wildlife in mangrove forests, beautiful beaches, limestone islands, trails and viewpoints. We decided to first settle down at a cosy Cabana resort on the Dolphin Bay beach road called Terra Selisa. It has about 20 Cabanas with a nice pool and a restaurant that serves Thai and western food, all renovated and equipped with TV, WiFi etc. It is best and easier to rent a bike and start your trip through the National Park. There is a small fee of 200Baht for the access to the park. 10

APPROACH November 2015

Up on the bike, the main attractions of the national park are Phraya Nakhon Cave with its iconic royal pavilion and huge chambers, Kaeo Cave and Thung Sam Roi Yot Freshwater Marsh where we parked our bikes and took a climb up to the caves. The bicycle tour took us to the home of a great diversity of bird species making it another great destination for birders with estimated around 300 species, half of them migratory birds. Have your camera ready as there are stunning views and sceneries. It is one of the best places in Thailand to see water birds on the flight path between Asia and Australia around January/February. Purple swamp hen, Malayan plover, Kentish plover, white-bellied sea eagle, greater spotted eagle, oriental hobby, eastern marsh harrier, spoonbilled sandpiper, you name it, are just a few of the birds common in the park. As we strolled with the bikes along the foot bridges over the wetlands and mangrove, we spotted mammals such as dusky leaf monkey, crab-eating macaque, Malayan porcupine, mainland serow, slow loris, barking deer, fishing cat and Malayan pangolin.

HUA HIN & BEYOND If you are lucky, you can see Dolphins on the coastline, although not guaranteed there is a good chance to spot some by boat trips that can be arranged form most hotels. Ask at Terra Selisa. We returned that afternoon to the resort and quenched our thirst with a large beer. On recommendation we drove further south to the the wild elephant watching area in nearby Kui Buri National Park, approximately 45km from Dolphin Bay, which is the best place in Thailand to see herds of elephants and gaurs(Indian Bison). The national park is home to one of the biggest population of gaurs in entire Thailand with estimated around 100 individuals and around 350 elephants. Recently a herd of 70 gaurs has been spotted feeding near one of the ranger stations. Of course you cannot use a bicycle through the forest. We were taken by pick-up of the ranger who guided us through the reserve and explained about the animals in the park. You do not want to drive on the wrong side of an elephant herd which would be above the wind direction. They would smell you and under circumstances feel threatened. We always stayed “under the wind. Returning to Dolphin Bay, a nice meal awaited us before we did our beach walk and retired to continue further South the next day.

SUPERSTARS

MUSIC

coming to Thailand

Sir Elton John Sir Elton Hercules John (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, 25 March 1947)[is an English composer and singer, who accompanies himself on the piano. Elton is one of the most highly acclaimed and successful solo artists of all time. He has achieved 37 gold and 27 multi-platinum albums, has sold more than 250 million records worldwide, and holds the record for the biggest selling single of all time. He looks in remarkably good nick for a 65-year-old man who plays 120 shows a year and, aside from an annual, month-long summer break, “doesn’t really take time off”. If he’s not performing live, he’s recording. If he’s not recording, he’s writing musicals or running his management company.

Madonna

As she nears 50, Madonna’s narrative is shifting. Yes, there’s another new super-pop album, Hard Candy, with Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams. She was the oldest girl in a house filled with eight children and so was pressed into adult service, cleaning and wiping and changing, when she was still a child herself; secrets and desires, her life before the mirror, which has followed her everywhere; high school, where she was beautiful, but punky and strange. I was interested in classical ballet and music and the kids were quite mean if you were different. So of course I was tortured even more, and that further validated my superiority, and helped me to survive and say, ‘I’m getting out of here. She found refuge in dance class and went on to the University of Michigan to study dance, but for just a year. After that she went to New York where her career began. Madonna´s philosophy is that there is order in the universe, even though it looks like chaos. We separate the world into categories: this is good and this is bad. But life is set up to trick us. It’s a series of illusions we invest in. And ultimately those investments don’t serve our understanding, because physicality is always going to let you down, because physicality doesn’t last.” More info in our Entertainment section, pg 66 12

APPROACH November 2015

Elton is charm personified: friendly, uproariously funny, engaged and engaging. Indeed, he’s so likeable, it’s weirdly easy to forget who you’re talking to – particularly when he’s chatting about music, which he does all the time, with genuinely infectious enthusiasm – at least until he says something that reminds you that you’re in the presence of a man who’s sold 250m records. He was always a genuine music obsessive. In the early 1970s, with his career in full, vertiginous flight, he incredibly found time to help out at a Soho record shop on a Saturday, manning the counter when the assistants went on their lunch break, selling albums by Leonard Cohen and Soft Machine to London’s discerning rock fans.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Amphawa Thailand Swimming Monkeys, Floating Markets, Tree Temples and Fireflies - Part 1

BANGKOK based British author Andrew Wood shares his Thailand travel secrets after almost a quarter of a century living in “The Land of Smiles”. Story and pictures by Andrew J Wood Weekends seem to come and go so quickly. Life’s too short to waste them. So what to do to escape the city for a fun weekend, without travelling hours and hours? That was the question we applied ourselves to and came up with the answer of driving to Amphawa district just 80 km southwest of Bangkok. We were travelling as a small group of eight friends. We left Bangkok by minivan and arrived at The Grace Hotel Amphawa; the journey took just one hour and 20 minutes. Located on the banks of the Mae Klong River, the hotel surprised me... in a good way. It had Jacuzzi baths; it was modern, clean and uncluttered. We had AC (air conditioning ), Wi-Fi, a mini fridge, TV’s, large balconies, outdoor furniture and big comfortable beds. The hotel is a long riverfront strip, made up of villas that 14

APPROACH November 2015

stretch from the entrance to the riverside. Here you find the restaurant and the outdoor swimming pool. It was late afternoon and we decided that we would shower, change and meet for drinks on the balcony of one of the villas and then have an early dinner at the hotel’s riverside restaurant. I ordered Nam Prik Ong a famous Thai dish that is made from minced pork tomatoes and chilli. I’ve tried this dish many times before but never had it quite as good as this. The dish resembles warm Bolognese sauce with fresh vegetables to dip. This one was so good I ordered the same dish on two separate occasions. The following day we rose early for breakfast to participate in a lovely alms ceremony for the local monks. They arrived at the hotel by flat-bottom boat, silently paddled by two oarsmen. It was a spectacular morning, white fluffy clouds on a blue background, with the still waters of the Mae Klong River passing by. We made our offering to the monks of food along with incense, candles and flowers. It was a wonderful photogenic experience, the memories I shall keep for a very long time and a photo opportunity par excellence.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND Next stop a short 15-minute drive into Amphawa town itself to visit the Mae Klong Railway Market. We followed the river downstream. You quickly get the sense that the river is as important to the area as the roads we travelled on.

The market is well-known and famous as the market that suddenly has to make way for railway locomotives. They pass right through the market stalls that are pitched on the side of the tracks. We were able to witness the arrival of the morning train. A scene repeated eight times daily. In Thai the market is called Talad Rom Hoop – which, roughly translated, means ‘close the umbrella market’. Which is exactly what happens when the train approaches, the umbrellas and tarpaulin awnings that shade the vendors, with one pull of a rope, are whisked away. With another pull, the awnings are returned after the train passes by, to carry on as before. The market has been in operation since 1984 and is a popular stop for all visitors to Amphawa. From there we then moved further downstream by van towards the mouth of the river. We switched our mode of transport to a longtail boat and meandered through a small canal, Khlong Khon, into the main estuary which was lined with mangroves and teaming with birds as we headed off to see a troop of swimming monkeys. As we drew near a wonderful sight unfolded as we sat in the middle of the river - the monkeys ventured from the forest onto the river banks in anticipation of the fruit we had brought. Clearly a boat of people had a kind of Pavlovian response - feeding time!

away from you, that said ‘feed me’. We did. Then it was time to feed ourselves at Don Hoi Lod, located in Samut Songkhram close to Amphawa. Don Hoi Lot is a famous tourist attraction. It is a sandy bar on the mouth of the Mae Klong River. It was formed by the sedimentation of soil and mud and is rich with seafood and shellfish clams, especially razor clams (Hoi Lot) from which the area derives it’s name. The seafood here is delicious and cheap and we were all ready for an ice cold beer. Then we were off again to one of my favourite temple visits - the ‘temple in a tree’ at Wat Bang Kung. One of the more interesting temples which dates back to the Ayutthaya Period in the 18th Century, it is also known as Bot Prok Pho. Wat Bang Kung is famous for the small temple that is completely enclosed within the roots of a giant Banyan (Bodhi) tree. The roots look like pillars supporting the temple within, creating an amazing space with a serene and surreal atmosphere - nature’s architecture. A lovely place to pay respect to the Buddha image inside. At the same site lies the memorial to Bang Kung Camp, once a strategic naval outpost. Back in 1767, after the defeat of the old Siam capital of Ayutthaya by Burmese forces, General Taksin brought his navy down here after Burmese ships blocked the route to the gulf. He led his troops to re-take Ayutthaya and eventually became King Taksin the Great.

They kept coming out of the mangroves, many carry babies. The bolder (AKA hungry) swam right up to the boat and clinging on, with their big brown eyes only inches

POWER OF LOVE childrens home Andrew Stocks (45) entrepreneur, developer and Power of Love Church founder. Andrew and the Power of Love can be found on Facebook. Andrew: “My staff promotes the Power of Love through my personal Facebook page because I think people can relate to a person rather than an Organisation, and it works!” “After so many years of living in Thailand I wanted to start an Organisation because I got to love the generosity of the Thai people always wanting to give. They are a very giving nation and now it’s my time to start to help the nation back.” Andrew is a successful business man and a Church leader at the same time. The Power of Love Organisation was founded based on his ideas. The Grand opening of the Children’s Home in Hua Hin took place earlier in September and over 200 people attended. Many people came to show their appreciation, their loyalty and their support. “At times like these, when I can see all the people who support me come and give me strength. I am so thankful to all these people who have helped, without

them, it would not have been possible.” There will be around 50 children living in the Childrens´ Home. Five homeless boys have already moved in. They now have a home, a hope and so many people who love them and are taking care of them. Andrew: “The cost was around 23 Million baht. I want our children to grow up knowing that they are special, unique and loved; they need to be taught good values, have standards and be well educated. I want them to become Hotel Managers, Doctors, Business owners and even run for Prime Minister. If they reach for the stars, working hard to make their dreams come true, we can help them by giving them every opportunity, support and encouragement. I wouldn’t call it luxury, but a nice family home and not an institution. “ “The average cost of running the Home is approximately 170,000 baht per month” The Dusit Thani Hotels’ Football team is going to give one of our boys training with a professional coach. If he is good enough they will send him away to get a private education. Can you imagine the story of where he came from before becoming a famous footballer!

That would be so awesome. The boy is so excited about that. It will change his whole life. Andrew´s business skills can help the organisation and he runs it along similar for efficiency as with his businesses. However, funds have to be found to change the children’s lives. Andrew´s personal plans for the future? “I plan to take a more background role soon. I want to spend more time with my parents and occasionally travel with them.”

As it very often happens, he did not only fall in love with the country but also with his lovely girlfriend with whom he decided to set up a salon, only to sell it after 3 months (for a profit) and dedicate themselves to a profitable shade sail manufacturing company. Shade sails were made for homes and businesses to cover areas where the sun had to be shaded out.

Customer demands increased as his construction revealed dedication to detail and quality finish. The company began creating terraces, roof salas, paint jobs and steel construction. “During the last 5 years, we have realized multiple projects and built a number of houses, all upper level quality and design. We realized that there was good business in perfectly finished housing projects, so we decided to start our own. Our team now counts 19 employees and our latest project in Sam Roi Yot is off the ground. Pieter would have liked to become a racing driver in Europe but unfortunately and fortunately it was not meant to be. Although he races super go karts (125cc with 47 hp.) and owns a

GHornbill THAI NATURE

The

REAT

Buceros Bicornis

by Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The Great Hornbill (Buceros bicornis) belongs within the order of corvids (Coraciiformes) or of their own order of hornbills and Hopfe (Bucerotiformes) to the family of hornbills (Bucerotidae).

T

here are two subfamilies: the Bucorvinae contain the two ground hornbills in a single genus, and the Bucerotinae contain all other taxa. Traditionally they are included in the order Coraciiformes (which includes also Kingfishers, Rollers, Hoopoes and Bee-eaters). Hornbills are separated from the Coraciiformes into an order of their own, Bucerotiformes, with the subfamilies elevated to family level. Given that they are almost as distant from the rollers, kingfishers and allies as are the Trogons, the arrangement chosen is more a matter of personal taste than any well-established taxonomic practice. All that can be said with reasonable certainty is that placing the hornbills outside the Coraciiformes and the trogons inside would be incorrect. Recent genetic data show that ground hornbills and Bycanistes form a clade outside the rest of the hornbill lineage. They are thought to represent an early African lineage, while the rest of Bucerotiformes evolved in Asia. The hornbill reaches a size of 130 cm and a weight of 3 kg. Males are slightly larger than females. The plumage is coloured black and white, neck and chest, as well as parts of the head are coloured beige. The most distinctive feature of hornbills is their heavy bill, supported by powerful neck muscles as well as by the fused vertebrae. The large bill assists during fighting, constructing the nest and catching prey. An additional feature unique to hornbills is the casqued, a hollow structure that runs along the 30

APPROACH November 2015

THAI NATURE upper mandible. In some species it is barely perceptible and appears to serve no function beyond reinforcing the bill. In other species it is quite large, is reinforced with bone, and has openings between the hollow centres, allowing it to serve as a resonator for his calls. In the helmeted hornbill the casqued is not hollow but is filled with hornbill ivory and is used as a battering ram in dramatic aerial jousts. The sexual dimorphism is weak. Some species exhibit sexual dichromatism in the Abyssinian ground hornbill, for example, pure blue skin on the face and throat denotes an adult female, and red and blue skin denotes an adult male. Distinguishing feature is firstly the size of the birds and, second, the colour of the iris. In the male, the iris is coloured reddish brown, the female is white. Both sexes have long eyelashes on the upper eyelid. Hornbills live sociable and are often found in small groups. They spend the night usually in groups on their sleeping trees. Since they live exclusively in the treetops, they are particularly well adapted to this habitat. With its three claws on their feet, they can very well hold on the branches. Life expectancy is around 40 years. Hornbills possess binocular vision, although unlike most birds with this type of vision, the bill intrudes on their visual field. This allows them to see their own bill tip and aids in precision handling of food objects with their bill. The eyes are also protected by large eyelashes which act as a sunshade. Hornbills are found and spread in tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. In particular, India, Thailand, Sumatra, Borneo and the adjacent islands, form the main distribution areas. They are found up to 2000 m altitudes. They feed mainly on fruit pulp, in particular that of figs. Furthermore, they also take insects and small vertebrates. Due to the high water content of their food the hornbills never need to drink.

and the female is supplied by the male with food. Once the young birds are fledged after about 16 weeks, the female opens the nest cavity again. She pounds on the brickwork with her beak. The young birds reach sexual maturity at 4 years. The population has been estimated to a number of 2,000 individuals in Thailand. This only constitutes 5-24% of the species’ range, so a very preliminary estimate of the total population is 10,000-70,000 individuals. It is probably best placed in the band 20,000-49,999 individuals. Trend Justification: Unfortunately, a moderately rapid decline is suspected to be occurring, as a result of the degradation and clearance of forests throughout the species’ range, as well as persecution by hunters and trappers.

Once a couple has been formed, so it stays together for a lifetime. Tree cavities at high altitudes of 15-20 meters serve them as a breeding cave. The female lays 2-4 eggs, of which usually only one young survives after hatching. Once the female laid her eggs, so something unique is happening in the bird populations’ world. The female is completely plastering the entire brood cave entrance outwards closed, with of a mixture of food, pieces of wood and dung, which is processed into a pulp, only a small gab remains open. Through this opening, the breeding November 2015 APPROACH

FINANCIAL

Financial News U

S - Practically all Asian markets were in the green per 15 October as the data on US retail sales and producer prices that were out on Wednesday was weaker than expected, denting the Fed’s rate hike prospects. With inflation falling and consumer spending stagnating, it will be very difficult for the Federal Reserve to pull the trigger this year. The economy could regain momentum in November or December but a significant turnaround would be needed to shift market expectations. EUROPE - Almost three quarters of UK citizens think house prices are set to rise in the coming year, according to a survey by Dutch Bank ING. On average, more than half of Europeans agree with the expectations that house prices will go up in the next 12 months.

The study, across 15 European countries, showed people in the UK, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Turkey were most bullish on house prices. In Italy, however, only a third of people think house prices will rise in the next year. House prices are on the up in many European countries and consumers remain bullish that this will continue it is expected. As a result, there are more people viewing property as an important financial asset – including countries where renting is the norm – but there is also frustration with 34

APPROACH November 2015

property being increasing unaffordable. Overall, one in four renters and homeowners say their rent or mortgage is a heavy burden on their finances. Renters in Italy and Spain are struggling the most, while mortgages in Turkey and Romania are the hardest to pay off. In June, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi decided to keep interest rates at the record low at 0.05%, as inflation in the Eurozone fails to pick up properly. The picture in Europe largely represents the slow global recovery. Singapore has taken over the top spot as the most powerful ‘nation brand’ in 2015, unseating Germany which is facing the effects of its auto giant’s diesel emissions scandal. Germany is now down at the 13th spot, falling from the top spot it held in 2014. Second spot for 2015 went to Switzerland with 85.9 points and United Arab Emirates and Finland in the fourth spot. New Zealand and Hong Kong ranked fifth and sixth respectively. Qatar took ninth spot. THAILAND´s head of the economic team, deputy prime minister Somkid Jatusripitak said the government now needs to strengthen other foundations of the economy in addition to the export sector – such as the agricultural sector and local tourism. Khun Somkid said the Finance Ministry is working on ways to lower the personal income tax rates, which are currently higher than the corporate income tax rate. Another key strategy is to increase connectivity with neighbouring countries and to turn north-south and eastwest linkages into practical economic corridors so that Thailand is a hub for Asean. Last but not least : Russian oligarchs who use London as their playground before returning home face mountains of paperwork to comply with currency controls implemented so Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin can scrutinise their accounts with foreign banks.

MONEY AFFAIRS

Coping

with CURRENCY FLUCTUATION By Jerry Mcmenamin

M

any financial journalists write about the dangers of inflation to retirement income but in reality even though it is higher in Thailand than in the West, inflation is a secondary threat.

Now I really get fed up rehashing the same old arguments for complaining expats.

Currency fluctuation is the bigger threat.

Just act. Move your capital from it’s so called save heaven, which is costing you a fortune and make up your mind to put at least half of it in the markets.

A 10 percent drop in the value of the pound against the Baht in any given year means a drop of 10 percent in the standard of living of expat residents.

There are many relatively secure bond funds and the hall mark of equity investments is that there are always markets in positive territory. Get a good fund manager.

So other than go home what are the alternatives?

Part of the idea with a diversified portfolio is to eliminate currency risk. When one currency falls the other rises so that in the long term it doesn’t matter what your home currency is. You are living here after all. In the long run your “safe” deposit investment could impoverish you.

You can of course sit down the bar and moan and groan about Thailand and how it is unlikely any Foreigner will ever buy a property in Thailand again. A wise man once penned the statement for a fulfilled life always “Act not React” How true this is today. This Colum is written for people who have retired here and have been prudent enough to save money while they were working or who have sold a property and usually have a six figure amount to invest.

Take action now to strengthen your hand. Like most things in life that work out badly the fault usually lies with the individual. Remember that when you point the finger of blame there are three fingers pointing back at yourself.

Many have this money in the bank because they are afraid of the market.

If you want to retire in Blighty then by all means keep your assets in Sterling, Dollars, Swiss Francs or Euro. If however you are retired here-wise up.

Those in the market are afraid to change from their home currency and diversify into two or three other currencies.

Get assistance with your investments and live a financially comfortable life. thailandexpatfinance@yahoo.com November 2015 APPROACH

HAPPY HEARTS

About

Heart DISEASE Heart and blood vessel disease - also called heart disease - includes numerous problems, called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when a substance called plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This build-up narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke. The heart’s job is to send a continuous supply of oxygenated blood around the body. The kidney filters the blood, extracting waste in the form of urine, and also helps regulate the water and salt levels to control blood pressure. Relatively recent research has shown that heart failure is a significant risk factor for kidney disease. When the heart is no longer pumping efficiently it becomes congested with blood, causing pressure to build up in the main vein connected to the kidneys and leading to congestion of blood in the kidneys, too. The kidneys also suffer from the reduced supply of oxygenated blood. When the kidneys become impaired, the hormone system, which regulates blood pressure, goes into overdrive in an

42

APPROACH November 2015

attempt to increase blood supply to the kidneys. The heart then has to pump against higher pressure in the arteries, and eventually suffers from the increase in workload. This is what we call a heart attack - Coronary heart disease (CHD) causes most heart attacks. CHD is a condition where the inside of one or more of the coronary arteries becomes narrowed because fatty deposits called atheroma have built up within the artery walls. The fatty area of atheroma in the artery wall is called a plaque, and if that ruptures, a blood clot forms to try to repair the damaged artery wall. The blood clot can block (fully or partially) the coronary artery, causing part of the heart muscle to be starved of blood. Typical symptoms of heart attack can include pain or discomfort in the chest that doesn’t go away; it may spread to the arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach; and, as well as pain or discomfort, you may get light-headedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting. It is possible to have a heart attack without experiencing ‘classic’ chest pain This is more common in people with diabetes, because a consequence of the condition can be nerve damage, which can affect how you feel pain.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

When you see your doctor, cardiologist or other healthcare professional, it’s not always easy to know what to ask – especially if you only have a short time with them and you’re feeling worried about your health.

Here is a quick guide: 1. What are these tests for? 2. Can I have a copy of my test results? 3. What are the benefits and risks of this treatment/ medication? Ask for an explanation of the relative risks in a way that make sense to you 4. Are there any alternatives to this treatment? 5. What will happen if I don’t have any treatment? 6. I need transport to the hospital/ home from the hospital – how can I arrange this? 7. Where can I get more information or support about my condition/ medication? 8. Is there a support group or anything similar? 9. Who do I contact/ what do I do if things get worse?

LAST BUT NOT LEAST - IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP MYSELF? Over-the-counter medication, herbal medicines and supplements Check with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medicine, herbal medicines and supplements. St John’s Wort, a popular herbal anti-depressant medicine, can interact with a number of medicines prescribed for heart conditions and therefore alter their effectiveness.

Don’t stop taking your prescribed medicines even if you start feeling better as this could possibly make your symptoms or condition worse. Your doctor may be able to adjust the dosage or change you to a different medication to reduce any side effects you’re experiencing.

Will my medicine cause side effects? Some medicines may cause side effects, but often these are temporary and disappear after a short time. Not everyone experiences side effects and you may have none at all.

Tips how to reduce your risk of heart disease • Be a non-smoker. • Eat a low-salt diet. • Ask your doctor or nurse how to adjust drug dosage according to your blood test results and weight. Weigh yourself regularly at home to warn of fluid overload or dehydration. • Get to know your drugs – ask your doctor, specialist nurse or pharmacist to explain. • Exercise regularly – swimming, cycling, dancing or power walking all help to lower blood pressure and improve heart and muscle function. Your first goal is to help your loved one enjoy life again and work to prevent another stroke or heart attack. As a caregiver, you’re responsible for helping your loved one take medications as directed and on time. Find out about the new medications your loved one must take, may it be medical or alternative. Know what they’re for and what they do. It’s important to follow your doctor’s directions closely, so ask questions and take notes.

Keep your heart happy – Enjoy life ! Courtesy of The British Heart Foundation November 2015 APPROACH

MOTORING MOTORING

THE 10 CARS MEN MOST WANT

If they could afford them, this would be the choice of most men Porsche 918 Spyder The electrified portion of the car’s propulsion system, meanwhile, consists of one permanently excited electric motor per axle, producing a maximum 282bhp and 431lb ft. of torque between them. While the rear motor-generator drives through the same PDK transmission as the combustion engine, the front motor drives via a single speed and is deliberately under-geared to run out of revs and decouple at 165mph. But not before it has contributed to the crankshaft-equivalent of 944lb ft. of peak torque, as well as 874bhp at 8500rpm. Top speed is 214mph. EU-tested CO2 emissions are 70g/km. The 918 has more power than a 2015 Honda-Engined F1 car, and yet it emits less CO2 than a Honda Insight economy saloon. It sells for THB 31,246,000 in Europe. The Sport version THB 34,128,000+ import duties.

Audi A9 The A9 concept would be positioned higher than Audi’s current flagship model, the A8, and is aimed at other top-end luxury saloons like the Porsche Panamera, and if it ever went into production, the Lamborghini Estoque. The lightweight structure and the air-sprung chassis it supports are based on those already used by high-end A8s, which is assembled on its own dedicated production line at Audi’s Neckarsulm factory. By using a common platform architecture for all three cars, Audi hopes to reap added synergies - both in purchasing and production activities. Technical features have not been revealed yet but it will most probably have V10 engine and Hybrid drive with two electric motors. Price estimate THB 8,000,000 + import duty.

Bentley Mulsanne With its 6¾-liter V8 being re-worked from top to bottom, the Mulsanne is a locomotive tour de force. Producing 505 horsepower and 752 lb-ft. of torque, it offers breathless power at 1,750 rpm. While EPA figures are not in yet, the Mulsanne does manage 16.7 mpg on a combined EU cycle. This nearly three-ton vehicle still serves up some impressive numbers. The big V8 is good for naught to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, and has a maximum speed of 184 mph. Price estimate THB 10,933,200 + import duty

Ferrari 458 Spyder The 458 Spider is the folding-hardtop convertible version of Ferrari’s magnificent 458 Italia coupe. It offers an open-air experience for those who prefer the wind in their face and the scream of their Ferrari exhaust as loud as the bright red paint job. Mechanically identical in most respects to the Italia, the Spider a sonorous 4.5-liter direct-injection V8 that shifts through a seven-speed dual-clutch automated-manual transmission. The V8 cranks out 562 horsepower at a staggering 9,000 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm, which combines with its 3,153 lbs curb weight to help the 458 Spider scoot to 62 mph in just under 3.4 seconds.Basic price estimate is THB 9,450,000 ex-factory in Italy + import duty.

Aston Martin Rapide With 552bhp of power output at 6650rpm, the new generation AM29 6.0-litre V12 engine of the Rapide S can push the car to a new maximum speed of 203mph. The new engine, also seen in the new Vanquish and DB9 delivers enhanced performance and CO2 benefits compared to the previous Rapide engine. It is, however, a sports car built for the challenges of the real world rather than the racetrack. Aided by the precision of the 8-speed Touchtronic gearbox, the Rapide S cruises in an equally effortless manner whether you are negotiating suburbia or the most remote rural areas. Basic price approx. ex-factory THB 7,500,000 + import duties 46

MOTORING

Honda Acura NSX Hybrid Little more than the name links the NSX with its historical predecessor, because the new NSX (built in Honda’s plant in Marysville, Ohio from 2016) features a complex hybrid powertrain. At a basic level, this is made up of two independent electric motors that drive the front axle, and a single electric motor that’s linked directly to the crankshaft of a mid-mounted twinturbocharged V6. Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a nine-speed DCT gearbox. The V6 displaces 3.5 litres and features both direct and port injection. The cylinder banks are 75 degrees apart, and the block has a dry-sump - beneficial for both packaging (as the engine can be mounted lower) and reducing oil starvation in high-speed cornering. Taking into account its rivals, a sub-4sec 0-62mph time and top speed approaching 200mph is aimed for. With hybrid grunt and forced induction, the torque window should be wide and peak power somewhere close to 600bhp. Honda says the low V6 contributes to the lowest centre of gravity in its class. Estimated price THB 5,000,000 + Import Duty Asean privileges should make this a runner.

Maserati Granturismo Even stationary, the GranTurismo embodies the romanticism and excitement of a Maserati. The GranTurismo’s 4.7-litre V8 delivers a performance every bit as charismatic and spectacular as you’d expect. Against the clock, the Maserati passes 100mph in 13.0sec and the standing km in 25.3sec, marginally quicker than a Mercedes CL500, but fractionally slower than a Jaguar XKR. Basic Price estimated at is THB 5,500,000 ex-factory + Import duties

Lamborghini Aventador As a thing to drive, the Aventador is as safe as anyone could reasonably expect a 691bhp supercar with sub-3.0sec 0-62mph capability to be, but as a device to distract other drivers from the road ahead, its powers may be unprecedented. You might never crash yourself, but you’re going to see plenty. Although the Aventador is laden with state-of-the-art technology, at its heart it remains a supercar of the old school, a massively wide, impossibly low machine powered by an outrageously powerful and classic normally aspirated V12 with 691bhp. The traction afforded by its all-wheel drive and mid-engine configuration, coupled with a gut-busting launch control strategy and a gearbox will upshift in 50 milliseconds. Expect a 0-100mph of around 6.5sec. Pricing: Check with the Lamborghini dealer in Thailand but Ex-factory it will set you back about THB 13,000,000.-

Corvette C7 Stingray Six decades and as many model generations of perennial sales success have already assured the Chevrolet Corvette of its place in the automotive hall of fame. In these times of forced induction and downsizing, it’s a pretty lazy petrol motor that produces just 75bhp per litre. But that figure gives you some idea of the bigheartedness of the Corvette’s 6.2-litre V8 460 HP, 0-100 kmh in 4.4sec. It’s a large, old-school supercar with a brawny naturally aspirated engine, a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. Every element of the 2016 Stingray makes it the quickest, most powerful, most refined Stingray ever made. Prices in the US start from THB 2,200,000.-

Jaguar XF R-S The Jaguar XFR-S is a large, four-door super-saloon which aims to take on some extremely good competition. It represents the quickest of the XF family of cars. Powered by a supercharged 5.0 V8 with 542 HP, acceleration figures of 0-100 kmh in 4.4 sec. and a top speed of 300 kmh, this luxury sports car leaves nothing to be desired off. Priced at approx. THB 4,100,000 ex-factory in the UK, check with the Thai dealership for imported prices.

COOLEST GADGETS

The Pine Mountain 1

The Pine Mountain 1 allows riders to feel the unique ride of a plus bike at a price that doesn’t offend. You won’t find any carbon here; no suspension either. The only bouncy bits are the 2.9in Schwalbe Nobby Nic tyres – and that’s definitely not a bad thing, after all – it’s very rare that we get a bike in that is this pure. Prices between THB 39,000 – THB 50,000.-

De Rosa SK Pininfarina The glorious outcome of a tie-up between two high-end Italian designers, the SK draws on De Rosa’s bike building history and Pininfarina’s design chops – famously responsible for some of Ferrari’s greatest cars. Displayed at the Cycle Show in stealthy black (also available in blue and black, red and black, and black and red), the SK costs THB 15,000.- for the frame only.

Raleigh’s new gravel bikes

We nearly bumped into ex-England Rugby captain Martin Johnson while checking these out – now there’s an endorsement for you – and liked what we saw. Prices start around THB 35,000.- for the base model, but we liked this Mustang Elite which combines an alloy frame with carbon forks and comes with SRAM’s 11 speed 1X Rival groupset, semi-hydraulic disc brakes and a cool name.

Vitus Sommet CRX A new carbon-framed version of their popular CRX full-suspension enduro model, Vitus say they’ve spent 18 months getting this right - and it shows. It will be on sale from March 2016, and the top-end version shown here comes with a carbon cockpit, RaceFace carbon cranks, RockShox Pike fork, Mavic Crossmax wheels, dropper seat post… Prices are likely to be around the THB 190,000.- mark for this model, and go down to around THB 140,000.- for the lowerend model.

Scott Genius 2016 27.5+

Go for Plus and find an entirely new riding experience”, Scott Sports claims. But what are the contributing factors that could, potentially at least, sway people towards these fatter beasts? Because Scott, in their new plus-sized Geniuses, has struck the best possible compromise between all of these factors that I’ve seen to date. A standard Q factor mated to confidence-inspiring 3″ treads and a perfectly-spaced rear end have all come together to create a balanced mountain bike that rides like way more than a 140mm trail bike. With a component spec that you can’t argue with and performance that belies the word “compromise,” I could see the Genius Plus being the perfect one-quiver mountain bike for riders all around the globe. Prices start at THB 144,000.-

COSMETICS & FASHION

Men´s Summer Trends & Hairstyles

As we close the doors on 2015 we thought it fitting to highlight the five key trends you need to be familiar with for Thai autumn 2015. You will see super street trends when in Bangkok, sitting on a sidewalk cafe on Sukhumvit or Silom and watching the young professionals go by.

Especially hair styles are highly in fashion as shapes and cuts have no fantasy limit. One of the 2015 men’s hair trends that is already all over Asia is forward fringe. These three models are all rocking ultra thick bangs. This style can be worn in an Beatle-esque almost bowl cut with a hint of side burns. For an edgier, emo style wear hair longer so bangs cover the brows, maybe even the eyes. Also add some volume and texture with product. Some of the most creative hairstyles are already being worn in Asia. For something fresh and new, try front fringe worn long and cut at an angle, shaggy bangs, extra tall spikes, or shaved temples. All of these are men’s hair trends for 2015, maybe even 2016.Here some of the current hair styles including our all David Beckham who did set a fashion trend himself as a football/soccer idol.

KIDS & EDUCATION

Montessori and Waldorf Schools Waldorf educational system versus Montessori The similarities – Differences and Methods By Susan Mayclin Stephenson

Both believe in protecting the child from the stresses of modern life, overuse or misuse of technology such as television and computers. Both emphasize the education of the whole child, spiritual, mental, physical, psychological, over any particular academic curriculum. Both stress the importance of the natural environment, absence of plastic, keeping in touch with nature and natural materials.

Montessori Maria Montessori (1870-1952) - Maria Montessori, a medical doctor and anthropologist, opened the first Casa dei Bambini (not “school” but “house of children”) in Rome, Italy in 1907.

Waldorf Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) - Rudolf Steiner founded the Waldorf School at Stuttgart in Germany in 1919 for the children of the factory workers of the Waldorf Astoria Cigarette Company at the request of that company’s director.

SIMILARITIES SIMIL ARITIES Montessori and Waldorf are the fastest growing educational systems in the world today. Both are based on many years of experience, with all kinds of children, the world over. Both have great respect for the child as an individual, spiritual, creative being. 62

APPROACH November 2015

Both systems base their education on the needs of the child, believing that this will lead to meeting the needs of society as a whole. Incidentally, both Montessori and Waldorf schools were shut down by the Nazi regime during W.W.II because they refused to teach the ideology of the state. Both schools provide a rich variety of art, music, dance, and theatre at all ages.

Differences DIFFER ENCES Curriculum WALDORF: Academic subjects are kept from children

in Waldorf schools until a much later age than Montessori. They are thought to be, as in traditional schools, something necessary but not especially enjoyable, and best put off as long as possible. The day is filled with make-believe, fairies, art, music and generally the arts, putting off reading, writing and math until age seven or so.

MONTESSORI: Dr. Montessori on the other hand, filled her first school of 3-6-year-olds with dolls and other traditional make-believe toys but found that when children were given

KIDS & EDUCATION the opportunity to do real work such as cooking, cleaning, caring for themselves, each other, and the environment, they completely lost interest in make-believe and preferred real work. She later, at the request of parents who were so impressed with the new cleanliness, happiness, and good manners of these slum children, invented manipulative language, math, and other academically-oriented materials and studied the children’s response. Academic lessons were, and are now, never required or forced, but offered to and enjoyed by the children.

Method WALDORF: In the early years the activities are most often taught and carried out in groups with the teacher leading. When academic subjects are studied they are taught in a more traditional way, the teacher talking, the children at desks being taught in a group. Children are kept together with a group of children their own age with the teacher ideally moving up each year with the children and so getting to know and working with the same group of children for six years. Arts are ideally always a part of the academic studies.

MONTESSORI: Social development is more like that of

real life because children are not kept in a group of sameage students, but are grouped in 3-6 year age span (3-6; 6-12, 12-15). The teacher gives lessons individually to one child at a time, and often lessons are given to one child by another child. The choice of what to study or work on at any one time is left to the child, with guidance whenever necessary by the teacher. A high level of creativity is reached because the children’s experience is based on rich experience in the real world and the exact use of materials. Children learn exact techniques for many of the materials, just as they would learn the exact use of a piano or a violin, each experience considered a “key” which opens a new door of understanding and experience. This use of materials has been taught to the adults, adapted whenever necessary, through the direct and continued observation of children all over the world over the last 100 years.

Fantasy & Imagination WALDORF: In Waldorf philosophy, play is viewed as the

work of the young child and the magic of fantasy, so alive in the young child, is an integral part of how the teacher works with the child. The teacher incorporates storytelling and fantasy into the curriculum. The child can use for the most part any of the materials in any way.

MONTESSORI: In Montessori fantasy and imagination are very much a part of the creative process. However, since the real world is seen as a wonderful creation as it is, children are introduced to the real world in all is variations in the first six years, and then use these experiences to create for the rest of their lives. The word “work” is used to describe the child’s activities instead of “play” because they as respected as adult activities.

Certification of Schools Unfortunately both are in the situation of not being able to protect and regulate the use of the words “Montessori” or “Waldorf.” This means that in both cases there are schools that profess to follow the teachings of their originators but whose directors, well-meaning as they may be, have a variety of experience, some the full long-term teacher training. Others may actually have only read a book on the subject and decided to open a school with no trained teacher at all! Having untrained teachers professing to teach Waldorf or Montessori is one of the things that has given a negative impression to the public and the educational world, and it makes it difficult for a parent to be sure of the quality of the school. Both Rudolf Steiner and Maria Montessori are very worth reading, and have a lot to offer anyone who wants to base education on children’s happiness and children’s needs, rather than an adult-imposed curriculum. For more information on Montessori theory and practice, see: http://www.montessori.edu For more information on Waldorf theory and practice, see: http://www.waldorflibrary.org

Also a high. academic level is the norm because of the depth of concentration the children reach while working and because children learn early to do research and to learn beyond the level of the teacher. The child’s choice and concentration is respected and protected from interruption by others. November 2015 APPROACH

Importing a new car to Thailand T

he Thai roads are not populated by a very diverse range of cars. Therefore importing a foreign car to Thailand is very attractive. The costs as well as the hassle makes the importation of foreign cars less attractive though. This artikel will present you with tips to make life easier for whoever plans to import their dream car. It will guide you through the procedures of two possible scenarios: temporary and permanent importation. No taxes or import duties need to be paid in the case of a foreign car being imported into Thailand for less than 6 months. You will need to pay a cash deposit or submit a bank guarantee that covers the amount of liable taxes and duties. This will be forfeited if the vehicle is not exported before the date indicated on the temporary import permit. Higher taxes and fines can also be awarded to importers who breach their temporary contract and extend their car’s stay in Thailand without further notice. Foreign-made vehicles permanently imported into Thailand, whether new or used, either for personal use or for sale, are generally subject to taxes and duties. However, used/ second-hand vehicles are regarded as restricted goods and, therefore, generally not allowed for importation into Thailand, except for temporary imports as mentioned above or imports under the conditions specified by the Ministry of Commerce.

The documentation required for permanent import of brand new personal vehicles include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

An Import Declaration Form; A Bill of Lading or Air Waybill; Sale documents (if any); Delivery Order (Customs Form No. 100/1); Foreign Transaction Form 2 in case where the CIF value of the imported vehicles exceeding 500,000 Baht; An insurance premium invoice; and Other relevant documents (if any).

However, additional documents as listed below are required in case of the permanent imports of used/second-hand personal vehicles: 1. 2. 3. 4.

House Certificate and Identification Card; Passport in case of changing residence; Vehicle Registration Certificate indicating that the imported vehicles was used abroad; An import permit from the Ministry of Commerce.

If the imported vehicles are the used ones, the amount of taxes and duties collected will be reduced according to the age of the vehicles. The total of import taxes vary, according to CIF value, age and engine cubic centimetres capacity, from 183% for off road vehicles to 251 % (rounded off). A car estimated with a CIF value of THB 1,000,000.- and less than 2,400cc, would be taxed at THB 2,131,707.- Importing a car is therefore worthwhile giving it a second thought! 64
