W

e are proud announcing our Monthly APPROACH Edition. Going from quar terly to once a month. Our sleepy slumbering town is growing rapidly , waking up slowly but surely. With a Super Mall being constructed and Central and Big C arriving , there will hopefully be more price competition among shops and supermarkets. Funny enough , prices in a large town are usually higher as rents are dearer, but in Hua Hin it is the other way around. Lack of competion drive prices up. On some items , Tesco Paranburi has lower prices and more attractive promotions than Tesco at Market Village. However, we will grow and focus on this little pearl on the Gulf of Siam. Do not worr y about the exchange rates, our trustfull politicians will worr y for us, we are still doing well. We at APPROACH will do our best to inform you about the events in and around Hua Hin , the doos and donts, what is going on in the world and a bit of satire. The whereabouts and the whatabouts, maybe even whoabouts. We may catch a bit of society, the bold and the beautifull. Most of all, APPROACH should be fun reading. Would appreciate your feedback and suggestions, send them to editorapproach@gmail. We will avoid politics, crime and getting too sexy. We will improve as we progress . Three surgeons are discussing who are the best patients to operate on. The first surgeon said “Electricians are the best, ever ything inside is colour coded.” The second surgeon said “I think librarians are the best patients because ever ything inside is in alphabetical order.”

Saturday 13th Songkran Water Festival

The Lunar New Year in Thailand mar ks a time when the countr y literally goes to water. Par t a time of respect and par t riot, Songkran is an occasion when images of the Buddha are ‘bathed’ and young Thais seek the blessing of their elder s by pouring scented water over their hands (a ceremony known as rod nahm dum hua). After that, it’s a water-throwing free-for-all – traditionally, the custom was to pour water gently over other people but it has evolved into little more than a good excuse for an almighty water fight. An Evening of Musical Pot-Pourri

A

classical music evening at the Hyatt Regency in combination with a rich buffet is offered one a month. Last January the Hyatt , in close cooperation with Khun Mongkol, offered the American Baritone Rene de la Garza and Taiwan’s Wong Zhuen Da at the piano. In February we had the pleasure of enjoying lovely Aree Kunapongkul, a top classical pianist from Bangkok and Mathias Bogner a world listed and price crowned violinist from Switzerland. The served dinners and buffets were always in tune and taste with the concert, classical setting, perfect table service and friendly staff.

Ambre Hammond (L), Khun Mongkol Chayasirisobohn (M) and Agrita Lakute (R)

CLASSICAL DELICACIES AT THE HYATT REGENCY HUA HIN

In March , the Hyatt presented stunningly charming Ambre Hammond, a world famous concert pianist from Australia who taught to play piano at the age of 3 and gave her first junior concert at the age of 5! Apart from the many prices Ambre has gathered, she is her own master of ceremonies as she explained the partitions she performed in a very popular way. Her virtuosity is beyond sheer admiration for the fluency of her performance, expressing herself and the music of the composer . We may all not be the connoisseurs we think we are, especially in company of others, but you need not be an expert to discover the fullness of her piano play and profesionality. Absolut Cum Laude Ambre !

15

Not less but a chapter of it´s own, was the exquisite performance of Agrita Lakute from Latvia. A master on her own, Agrita is a lecturer at the Mahidol University and her students are among first price winners at classic music competitions. Her interpretation of Johan Sebastian Bach – Partita in A Moll was only exceeded in virtuosity by her performance of “Landscape with Birds” by Peteris Vasks in which you could practically experience all the complicated and complex flute techniques in one musical performance. Bravo Agrita, come back soon to bring us more of this beautiful music. Khun Mongkol Chayasirisobohn presented us with his powerfull baritone voice , performing vintage evergreens from the sixties, accompanied by Ambre Hammond on the Piano, such as “love is a many splendour thing” and “If I loved you” among other pieces. Khun Mongkol performs in the yearly Messiah from Handel and Brahm´s Requiem with the Bangkok Combined Choir . He captivated us with his volume and performance of this musical delight. The Hyatt will be bringing back Classical Music concerts on a regular, hopefully monthly basis and it is recommended that you check their website for announcements which also appear in the Bangkok Post and Approach Magazine.

A Tibetan Mantra Ch a n tin g Jewe l DECHEN, A VOICE AS SWEET AS HONEY, CHANTING MANTRAS, A TIBETAN GIFT TO OUR SPIRITUAL WORLD.

A

world which is becoming more important as consumer dynamics cannot satisfy us anymore and our inner lives get more complicated through outside influences, injustice and terrorism. With her wonderful voice, Dechen is reaching out to a global public , not just meditation , Yoga and Mantra fans. It is her dream to reach out and provide inner peace and release tensions wherever needed. Dechen Shak – Dagsay was born in Nepal as her parents were fleeing being pursued by Chinese soldiers occupying Tibet. Soon after she was born , they moved to Switzerland where she went to school and grew up. It was her second home and although there are not many 4000 meter high mountains in Europe , the little Tibetan girl grew up a happy girl . Already at a young age she started singing and carried this on through her school days and into her teens and tweens. Dechen is very proud of her Tibetan origin and loved to sing the Tibetan songs with her late mother. She was always very impressed by the serenity and calm which she felt whenever her parents and grandparents practiced the Buddhist daily prayers at home. Over the years it was this kind of strong precious feeling of belonging and comfort that she wanted to share with others. Through singing Mantras and Tibetan prayers, Dechen discovered her talents and capacities. Reconciliation, tolerances and inner peace. A practitioner of Tai Chi and approaching a black belt in Karate, the Asian is fully in her. Her husband , Dr. Kalsang, a Tibetan Doctor and Naturopath supported her throughout their courtship and marriage which gave them two wonderful daughters.

18

I met Dechen at Baan Ing Phu, a luxury residence development by Peter Ton, a Dutch entrepreneur of Pool Villas facing the Black Mountain Golf Field. Dechen and Helge van Dyk spend a couple of weeks with their families Hua Hin, ultimately to compose new songs for her next album. The peaceful atmosphere of Baan Ing Phu, the view and the spiritualism of Dechen all contribute to wonderful recordings of which I was privileged to experience. Together with Helge van Dyk , A swiss producer, engineer, mixer, recorder and friend of Dechen , both have has worked together to produce and interprete Tibetan Chants. Helge has worked together with national and international artists such as Florian Ast, Gotthard, Udo Jürgens or Gianna Nannini and Bobby McFerrin Dechen says: “I am very happy and thankful, that I can reach out to so many people and touch their hearts and take them to their innate source of love and compassion.” An important task that Dechen took on together with her younger sisters Dolkar Dagsay and Dega Faoro are the social projects in Tibet, that their parents initiated nearly 25 years ago. When their dear mother Yischi Tsedön Dagsay passed away in 2002 they decided to continue the work in memory of their beloved mother. Together with their friends in Switzerland they founded the association “Friends of the Tsedön Clinic in Tibet” and with the meanwhile almost 100 members they are able to finance the cost of staff, medicine and maintenance of the clinic. They are also able to support 13 young Tibetan students from poor families to get a High School education. Detailed reports on the projects can be seen on: www.tsedon.ch For more , check out Dechen and her music at : www.dechen-shak.com.

“Lotuspound” by Khun Tawee Kesa-Ngam

Baan Sillapin Artists Village

B

HUA HIN’S ORIGINAL CENTRE FOR LOCAL ART

aan Sillapin Artists Village is Hua Hin’s original arts centre, which initiated on Nabkehaerd Road in initially but than moved to a a 10-rai (approx. 4 acres or 1.6 hectare) piece of land on the road going to Pala U Waterfall, just West of central Hua Hin within a stetting of lush tropical trees and plants. It is the base for the Hua Hin Artists Group, and the residence of Hua Hin’s most famous artist, Tawee KesaNgam and his wife Nang. Baan Sillapin includes a large gallery of arts and antiques, artist studios, a coffee and gift shop and an open air classroom for their very-popular classes in painting and sculpturing. The facility is a frequent host of special exhibitions and performance events.

At first impression i doesn’t look like much until you get in, the village is a small sprawl (doesn’t make much sense I know - you’ll get what I mean if you go) with a whole range of different artists studios where you can view an array of different styles and mediums. A real pleasure to wander around and as I’m no art critic or fan that’s saying something. It is just this Hill Billy Feeling............... Furthermmore for those with young kids in town, there are art classes that can keep them occupied painting and making dolls. There is an art class on Saturday mornings, which is nice for the kids. They can choose from several different size canvases and paint their own pictures. They can also buy inexpensive plain white stuffed toys and paint them. There are cats, fish, people, etc which they can choose. When the art class is finished, you can stroll around looking at the art work being created by the artists who live here, buy some nice souvenirs, and enjoy a decent cup of coffee.

COOL STUFF

Asus VivoBook X202E Touchscreen If you’re in the market for a portable notebook with Windows 8 and a touchscreen display, the Asus VivoBook X202E is one of the cheapest options available. But despite the relatively low price, it’s a pretty decent laptop which offers acceptable performance, a decent keyboard, and a rather attractive case design. www.asus.com

Samsung Galaxy S 4 The new Samsung Galaxy S 4 has a five-inch panel with a 441ppi pixel density OLED screen. With features like Floating Touch and hand gestures you can control the phone without even touching the display, while the S Health and S Translator integration add to the unique aura around the S 4 as a truly human companion. www.samsung.com

Homemade Gin Kit We’ve heard of bathtub gin before, but luckily this Homemade Gin Kit doesn’t require you to set up a distillery in your bathroom. Instead, it has you grab a bottle of vodka and let it steep with the included juniper berries and carefully selected, hand weighed spices, botanicals, flowers, and aromatics. Roughly 36 hours later you’ll have your very own small batch gin, which you can keep in the included 500ml bottle for your own purposes while gifting away the other 250ml in the other included flask. www.homemadegin.com

The Luminor Submersible 1950 The Luminor Submersible 1950 Amagnetic features a case that ensures an extremely high resistance to magnetic fields: 40,000 A/m (ampere per meter). Such a high limit is achieved by the use of a special internal case made of soft iron of the highest purity, which encloses and isolates the movement, forming a Faraday cage that diverts the flow of magnetic fields. The bezel is done in ceramic and titanium, which is completely new in Panerai watches. www.panerai.com

GoPro Hero3 Silver Edition Samsung S9 UHD 4K TV

The GoPro Hero 3’s video quality is simply the best among the helmet cameras we tested, and we appreciate its compact design and waterproof case. However, the helmet mount is awkward. More than once, it hit the crossbar on the ski lift. Also, the GoPro’s short battery life -- half that of the Contour+2 and a third of the Drift HD Ghost -- is a turnoff. But for those who won’t necessarily mount the GoPro on a helmet, such as surfers, bikers or racecar drivers, the video quality alone makes this the action camera to beat.

Star ting at 85 inches and going up to a massive 110, this space-age set boasts 2.2 channels of 120 watt sound, Precision Black Pro technology for outstanding color reproduction and contrast, and an up-scaling engine to make your standard HD content look better. But the real highlight is the unique frame, which suspends the panel inside an oversized, squarish frame that’s sure to become the centerpiece of your living room or theater.

ur man at the municipality is Khun Suwit…., serving two majors now , former MP, self made man of Hua Hin. Khun Suwit started his professional career as an employee of the Dole pineapple company, arranging logistics from the field´s harvest on to the trucks into the canning factory. After a while he discovered that he could be doing the logistics by himself, hiring trucks, arranging transports. Not long before he developed further entrepreneur talents and before he joined the municipality to help the former major , a close friend, he was self-employed and owner of a cement casting factory. Away from policies and politics, K. Suwit sees himself as a connection between all government authorities, trying to bring them all together. Town administration is not easy as there are many problems concerning the infrastructure, traffic , environment and last but not least , crime. Authorities have their own ideas of regulations and rules…but then sometimes, the individual as well.

We asked Khun Suwit what is planned for Hua Hin for the next 3 years. • As traffic grows in Hua Hin especially on weekends , a second road parallel to the Petchkasem road from Kao Takiab towards Cha Am is planned. Construction started a couple of months ago. A tunnel is planned under the railway station not to disturb town traffic. • Soi 112 will be a 4 lane carrier road from Kao Takiab to the Bypass Highway and will be finished by the end of 2013. Total cost about 70 million THB. • A high speed railway connection between Hua Hin and Bangkok valued at 2.2 billion THB will be built within 2 years , starting middle of 2013.The ride from Hua Hin to BKK will take 45 minutes and only stop in Cha Am and Petchaburi. Construction budgets are allocated on a yearly base from the Thai Government , so as construction is done , collateral is allocated to continue year after year. Khun Suwit furthermore announced a planned Jazz event in June this year. The municipality will keep us updated about What , When and Where. The APPROACH team wishes Khun Suwit success with all the plannings and count upon his professional support.

he Thais are a fun loving friendly people but they have their own culture which sometimes is not properly understood by foreigners. Thais are proud of their country and their King.

Keeping all this in mind, respecting Thai culture and leaving your European attitude behind, you could have a wonderful time living in Thailand or retiring at all and after all. Here a few tips about the paperwork: As a general rule, any foreigner seeking entry into the Kingdom of Thailand for business, investment, study, medical treatment, mass media, religion, employment, retirement and other purposes is required to apply for a non-immigrant visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate-General at his country of origin. If you do not obtain this visa prior to coming, you will enter on a 30-day tourist visa. During these 30 days, you will be required to leave the country and travel to any neighbouring country with a Thai Embassy with the proper documents necessary for completing a Thai non-immigrant visa.

Immigration Tips Moving / Retiring to Thailand

Required Documents for a Non-Immigrant Thai Visa The expression goes, “better over-prepared than under-prepared“, just to be on the safe side : The requirements may differ from country to country, so check with the Thai Embassy / Consulate in your country • • • • •

Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months Visa application form completely filled out One recent (4 x 6 cm.) photograph of the applicant Air ticket paid in full Financial means (20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family) cash on you..... ….just in case you are required to show. • Consular officers reserve the rights to request for additional documents as deemed necessary Once you are in Thailand , for example; with a Non immigrant visa type B and a validity of 12 months , you will need to see the immigration officer at the Thai town or nearest town every 90 days and have them stamp it. If you do not do this , you may be fined at least 500 Baht per day for “overstay”. It may sound unreasonable but that is the rule.

Tip : If you or your company are applying for a Work permit connected to a Non-immigrant Visa Type B, do not show up at your work place before the Work permit and Visa is issued. Breaking this rule may get you deported to country of origin. Free ride home. FINANCIAL NEWS

The Euro... The Single Troubled Currency? THE EURO IS THE SINGLE CURRENCY SHARED BY (CURRENTLY) 17 OF THE EUROPEAN UNIOIN’S MEMBER STATES, WHICH TOGETHER MAKE UP THE EURO AREA.

T

The introduction of the Euro in 1999 was a major step in European integration. It is one of the world’s most important currencies, and around 331 million EU citizens use it as their currency. The European Union is in danger of compounding its on-going economic crisis with a political crisis of its own making. Over the last year, crises of confidence have hit the 17 EU members that in the years since 1998 have given up their own currencies to adopt the euro. For the first decade of this century, markets behaved as though the debt of peripheral EU countries, such as Greece and Ireland, was as safe as that of core EU countries, such as Germany. But when bond investors realized that Greece had been cooking its books and that Ireland’s fiscal posture was unsustainable, they ran for the door. The EU has stopped the contagion from spreading -- for now -- by creating the European Financial Stability Facility, which can issue bonds and raise money to help eurozone states. Together with the International Monetary Fund, the European Financial Stability Facility has already lent Greece and Ireland enough money to cover their short-term needs. But such bailouts are only stop-gap measures. Portugal and Spain, and to a lesser extent Belgium and Italy, remain vulnerable to pressure from bondholders. Portugal is likely to receive 50-100 billion euros over the next few months. But should Spain also need a bailout -which could cost as much as 600 billion euros -- the 750 billion euro European Financial Stability Facility would soon be exhausted. In that event, the main euro creditors, primarily British, French, and German banks, might have to accept so-called haircuts, substantial cuts in the principals of their loans. Encouraged by Germany, some of the states in difficulty have sought to placate bond markets by making ruthless cuts in government spending. But as many economists have pointed out, these measures are hindering growth without satisfying bondholders that their money is safe; bondholders worry that these measures are not politically sustainable. In fact, they are likely to undermine Europe’s political union... There is no way that the strong industrial super powers will allow their economies to collapse at the cost of corrupt book cookers or money printers such as the USA.

26

Let´s take a close look at the US debts versus the European debts. They are : Euro debt US $ 12.7 Trillion versus USA Debt US $ 17 Trillion The Euro Debt involves 17 Countries plus the UK ! The USA stands alone !

The National Debt The national debt (also known as public debt) is money owed by the federal government. As the government represents the people, government debt can be seen as an indirect debt of the taxpayers. The U.S. government incurs debt by issuing treasuries (bills, notes and bonds). These securities are either sold on the open market or directly to the Federal Reserve. Many of the enthusiasts say that the way forward is for the 17 Eurozone countries to issue Euro Bonds, which they would all guarantee (one of several variations on the fiscal-union theme). Even the German government, which is reluctant to bail out economies weaker than its own, thinks that some sort of pooling of budgets may be needed once the current debt problems have been solved. Yet for all the turmoil, fears of countries’ repeatedly defaulting on their debts or the total collapse of the euro are vastly overblown. The Eurozone countries have demonstrated that they can and will resolve each successive stage of the crisis by cooperating and sharing decisionmaking powers. They have created a host of new continent-wide institutions, built a substantial financial firewall to prevent debt problems from spreading, and are now well on their way to creating a banking union and a partial fiscal union. When the dust settles, the common currency, and indeed the entire project of European integration, is likely not only to survive but to emerge even stronger. “Je Maintiendrai,” “I will maintain,” is the motto of the House of Orange and Nassau, the Royal Family of the Netherlands. Therefore, I adopt “Je Maintiendrai” as the motto for my Vita and the determination that we will maintain. The Euro will survive and come out strong , finally. EDUC ATION

Kids & Educational Systems

UK vs. US Curriculum INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS IN THAILAND WHICH FOLLOW THE ENGLISH NATIONAL CURRICULUM USE THE SAME STANDARDIZED TESTING REGIME AND CRITERIA AS SCHOOLS IN ENGLAND.

E

ven before children can read it’s important to have books around so that they begin to develop habits which will lead to a lifelong love of learning.

Any comparison of the two systems must start with the statement that one is not comparing like with like. The US doesn’t have a single educational system in the sense that England does. American schools do, however, have a number of accreditation bodies, who ensure that they have certain standards and fundamentals in common. US schools are also much more free to respond to the requirements, or indeed demands, of the local population. This means that special interest groups can have at times a significant effect on teaching requirements and the curriculum in those schools. This might lead to certain subjects, such as Biology, having additional strictures on what can and cannot be taught in schools. Schools in England, on the other hand, follow a single standard National Curriculum.

It monitors and assesses key developmental milestones. Parental communication is heavily emphasised in the EYFS. Play is of course emphasised in the play-based learning sections of the curriculum, as are areas of continuous provision such as outdoor play, water play, sand play, arts activities and books. Even before children can read it’s important to have books around so that they begin to develop habits which will lead to a lifelong love of learning. Moving into primary school, the key difference might be seen to be one of approach. The core areas of teaching in fact vary little. It is arguably the case that the British system is slightly more advanced in terms of maths and literacy, but in truth the variation between students is higher than that between the two systems. General standards in any good school in either the US or the UK will not vary hugely. The UK primary and early years system has proven to be highly successful in nurturing young minds, but aspects of the US middle school system are also being developed strongly.

vs Teachers in both systems have some degree of personal freedom to develop their own teaching style within the structure of the particular curriculum that they follow. The English National Curriculum specifies in some considerable detail the educational milestones that children should reach on a year-by-year basis as they progress through their school life. Children are regularly assessed in detail by teachers, who use a standardised set of criteria to assign levels to their progress. Nationally, standardised tests are also employed, which give a very strong indication of how well a child is doing compared to national standards. Schooling in the US generally begins at the age of around 5 or 6 years old. The initial focus in kindergarten is on play-based activities, with a transition to more formal structured learning occurring gradually as the child progresses through school. In many ways this is mirrored in the British system. In the UK, unlike in many areas of the US, however, a full system is in place for early years education. The Early Years/Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum is centered on developing all aspects of a very young child, both social and academic. AP P R O A C H M A G A ZI N E A P R I L 2 0 1 3

Both systems feature a strong emphasis on ICT skills, but the UK system is perhaps a little more outward looking. The key difference will always be one of approach. A modern forward-looking system aiming to maintain some traditional values, or a highly varied state-by-state system looking to satisfy the needs of a very varied community while maintaining a liberal tradition; in the end, it’s up to parents and students to choose the one best suited to them. In Hua Hin, BECC school at Patravadi is based on the British Curriculum and Standards whereas Halio tends toward a more US curriculum liberal type of education. In the end, it’s up to parents and students to choose the one best suited to them.

Berthe Mandaat, Founder Chicky Net

Chicky Net, The Expat Women’s Online Community

C

C HIC K Y NE T C RE ATOR - BERT HE MANDAAT - ABO U T BEI NG A FE M ALE E X PAT IN TH A ILA ND & HUA HI N.

hicky Net is the only expat women’s online community in Thailand. With over 2,000 members, Chicky Net is a valuable resource for women living and staying in The Land of Smiles. There are several Chicky net communities in Thailand. Among others , there is the Chicky Net in Hua Hin where Hua Hin Ladies meet , talk, exchange information, have lunches and dinner. Hi Berthe. What country are you from and how long have you been living in Thailand? I am from the Netherlands and have been living in Thailand with my boyfriend for 3 years. Where have you lived in Thailand? Where are you currently living? I have lived in Phuket for 3 years with a small stopover of 3 months in Chiang Mai. How long has Chicky Net been online? What is your history with them? Chicky Net actually started out as a Facebook group which I set up in April 2009 about 3 months after moving to Thailand. Apparently it was badly needed as the group grew so fast that I decided to launch my own social network and Chicky Net was born. Due to the success of the Phuket network the network was in time expanded by other locations in Thailand like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Hua Hin. Still its worthwhile for women in other areas to join as there is plenty of useful information that applies to Thailand overall. That there never really was a grand plan behind the start of this social network is revealed by those who take a more critical look at the Chicky Net logo which is more Japanese that it is Thai. In the beginning of Chicky Net I quickly created a little drawing of something Asian and I never really thought of it further. And well, down the line I kind of got attached to this girl. She reminds me of the early days of Chicky Net.

28

What has been the best aspect of being involved with Chicky Net? The best aspect of Chicky Net is by far that the network gives women an easy access to a new social life in a strange country. Some women were really lonely before they joined and now have a brimming social life again. That is extremely gratifying. As Chicky Net regularly posts interviews with a variety of Foreign women living throughout Thailand, have you noticed any consistencies in the interviews, hence the experiences of Foreign women in Thailand? Well a consistency in the interviews is that almost everyone’s Thai is awful LOL But on a more serious note, I like the overall positive vibe and that it shows that Thailand is an amazing place to live. We’ve all read the grumpy old men stories online, and even though entertaining, they do get boring after a while. I feel its now our time, a time of a new generation of expats. Chicky Net hosts various events. Can you give us more information on them and how someone could get involved? The great thing about the Chicky Net events are that they are member driven. So if you have a nice idea you are welcome to set it up. The fact that different people contribute to the event organization means that the network offers a nice mix of things to do. Members of Chicky Net come from all walks of life and have ages ranging from 20 to 70, so the younger girls go clubbing and the older ladies play Mahjong. How great is that? Events are sometimes also open to partners and friends, this is something the event organizer can choose for if she wants. So not only do women meet each other at events, also guys can expand their social circle. Anything you’d like to add? Well come and check us out at www.chickynet.com and see for yourself what all the fuss is about. On the website you will find the connection to the Hua Hin Chicky Net.

Hua Hin Butler is much more than a food delivery service as it also provides a wide range of other services that makes it a one stop service center for tourists and expats living in Hua Hin. The butler service provides Taxi Bookings, Party Service, Massage at home, Grocery Deliveries, Ticket Ordering and Booking, Handyman Service, Maid and Babysitters, Car Rental, Car Wash service and Tour Bookings. On top of this, they can rent a phone, get help with computer problems, or even get quotes on their insurance needs. One of the partners and CEO of Huahinbutler.com, Namfon Seelueam explains; “The Hua Hin Butler´s services are based on hundreds of interviews with foreigners and expats visiting and living in Thailand. They have identified the specific needs of living, at longer or shorter periods. Many times it seems that the language barrier is the biggest issue – and here is where we help out. “ The interviews founded the basic ideas of the Butler service, as our butlers and operators are trained in the service sector; we are acting like the middle man between the customer and the service provider. The start has been quite overwhelming Namfon explains: “Of course there have been startup problems, as logistics are always the bottleneck. We have received more orders than expected, and it has been a positive challenge to make sure that each customer was happy during the whole process.

the original thai beer By Jay Warner

A CORPORATION OF GREAT SIGNIFICANCE TO ITS COUNTRY AND PEOPLE.... SINGHA HOLDS ITS HEAD HIGH FOR THE APPEARING CELEBRATION OF AN EXCEPTIONAL 80 YEARS OF SUCCESS IN TRADING AND GLOBAL RECOGNITION.

W

HRM King Prajadhipok (Rama VII)

ith plans to build the memorial bridge linking Bangkok and Thonburi in 1929, Praya Bhirombhakdi, who owned a thriving ferry business carrying commuters across the river, foresaw that his business would be greatly affected in time to come.

It was on a visit to a Paul Pickenpack store that changed the course of history for Thailand’s first beer and international trade. It was then, later on in 1931, when Praya Bhirombhakdi submitted his brewery project to the Ministry of Finance. During one of the King’s movie nights at the Ambhorn Villa, Praya Bhirombhakdi had an audience with His Majesty the King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), who was very much interested in the new mega project that would create hundreds of new jobs for the people, and finally give Thailand her very own beer. Khun Praya Bhirombhakdi

In 1932, His Majesty the King granted democracy to the Thai people. Praya Bhirombhakdi embarked on a half-year long visit to Europe to learn more about quality brewing, and to acquire modern machinery for the new brewery. With the Prince of Kampangpetch present, help was sought from His Majesty the King at the Klai Kangwol Palace in Hua Hin. The much needed final loan from the Royal Coffers was granted

HRH Princess Sri Nagarinda

However, the official opening of the brewery was on 6th July 1934, where His Royal Highness Prince Narisara Nuvadtivongs, the King’s uncle, attended as Guest of Honour, together with members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister, government officials, leading businessmen and society patrons. The original Thai beer since 1933, the Boon Rawd Brewery was established creating the classic, original taste of Singha beer, an instantly recognisable brand. A 100% malt barley premium quality beer, served in over 50 countries worldwide.

The much needed final loan from the Royal Coffers was granted and collected at the Grand Palace on the 20th June 1933.

Inspired by German beers, Singha worked hard to create its own unique and signature recipe. Successful with their mission, Singha exported its first beer in 1970 and have gradually increased to cover over one third of the worlds market today. Served in Thai restaurants all over the world, it’s said to compliment its country’s signature spicy dishes...

and collected at the Grand Palace on the 20th June 1933 after being safely accompanied and guarded by the entourage of Royal tanks and soldiers.Boon Rawd Brewery was finally set up on 4th August 1933.

30

A good excuse for one to test out this theory over some fine Thai cuisine and of course, the complimentary crisp taste of a Singha beer. Versatile and adaptable, Singha is moving from strength to strength. As market leader, Singha’s mission seems to entail a very much unfinished and triumphant future.

Short sighted, I think not. From racing and business schools, to restaurants, fine beer houses, Japanese fine cuisine, a cheese cake shop from heaven and a smoothie shop, (smoothie secrets) you’ll be dying to share with all your friends, so be quick, as it won’t remain a secret for long. I’ve also recently been informed of the new Rajadamnern Singha

From racing and business schools, to restaurants, fine beer houses, Japanese fine cuisine, a cheese cake shop from heaven and a smoothie shop

I spoke with Music Union representative and talented musician Pi Scott, who told us; “Music Union Co.Ltd is a record label which had just been established nearly 2 years ago. It is formed by 4 main producers: Nitipong Hornak, Asanee Chotikul, Chatri Kongsuwan, and Vudhinan Bhirombhakdi. Our main goal is to provide quality music and talent rather than just the image. At the moment we have a few famous bands, the old timers include: Asanee Wassan, Blackhead, Maew `jirasuk. There are also new comers such as, The Dey, The Ginkz, and Tong & Jenny.”

Muay Thai school, (located on the 3rd floor of Seenspace, Thonglor 13) should you fancy your hand at Thailand’s most popular adrenaline fuelled sport, shin guards recommended!! Sponsoring various elite individuals, bands, clubs and teams, Singha has most certainly raised the caliber of how to conduct their business. In a highly competitive market, Singha corporation have utilised their knowledge in a wide array of prosperous areas we will see positively develop in the near future...Manchester United and Chelsea football clubs, just to name a few.

Tong & Jenny

My personal favourite though, is Singha’s relationship with Buakaw Banchamek, (the man with the amazing 2 legs) a sponsorship deal of which I’m excited to see evolve in one of his up and coming fights... A must see for anyone with an interest in Muay Thai or martial arts. A new and innovative company, Music Union has been in business since 2011. With Singha’s ability to spot holes in the market, it was with the aid of 4 significant characters that enabled Music Union to be where it is today. The label is run by Managing director, son of Chamnong Bhirombhakdi, Chutinant Bhirombhakdi. Currently, Music Union consists of 30 very impressive artists and bands. However, that number won’t remain as it is, for long, as Thailand’s aptitude for talent only ever continues to grow and grow. With a less commercial credo than perhaps you’d see in more western labels, Music Union has calibrated the focus more on raw talent, helping with some of Thailand’s veteran bands to make a come back.

If you’re tempted to make a musical start or come back in life... or perhaps you’d like to be the next artist to leave Thailand dancing on their seats, why not test out your skills at Singha’s “Master of the Band”! If you’re fortunate enough to be selected, you’ll be immersed in a Music Union nirvana as you’ll receive a contract along with a very lucrative cash prize.

(in collaboration with Asia Golden Rice)

So why limit yourself to a beer? With Singha’s constantly growing, extensive range of quality products, why not add a delicious, healthy snack to compliment your refreshing beverage. Singha’s tasty ocean treat of seaweed comes freshly packaged with a choice of 2 somewhat addictive flavours. Spicy or original, its sure to be a delicious alternative that allows you to escape the feeling of guilt that goes hand in hand with your more traditional bar nibbles. I must confess to being quite partial to 3 or 4 packets!!! After a long sweltering day or a trip to the gym, why not succumb to the thirst quenching fruitful flavours of B-ing to put out the heat. My personal preference is the pomegranate super fruit flavour which never fails to leave me feeling contently replenished. A personal twist of mine is to mix a little Singha soda water...You’ll discover a whole new gratifying feel to the drink.

Furthermore Singha and it’s community of loyal workers are notably compassionate when it comes to dedicating time back to the people of Thailand. In 2011, parts of Thailand endured terrible flooding, isolating people from their homes and their everyday essentials of food, water and toiletries. A relentless period of rainfall, of which I was here to witness, left certain areas in a very serious state of need. In this time of crisis the good people of Thailand and Singha joined forces to help counter the devastating issues being faced with the means of one very important characteristic, good will... and it was exactly that, that Singha showed in abundance. So all in all, my conclusion is Singha corporation is a force to be reckoned with. They most definitely have vision, alongside mountains of ambition, complimented by a moral kindness. It’s always good to remember where you came from in order to know where you’re going... Singha, without a shadow of doubt, has most certainly demonstrated this with pioneering style and regal class. www.singhabeer.com www.singhamasteroftheband.com

Songkran, Thailand’s New Year & Waterfestival SONGKRAN FESTIVAL OR ALSO KNOWN AS THAILAND

WATER

FESTIVAL,

IS THE

MOST

IMPORTANT FESTIVAL FOR THAI PEOPLE.

C

elebrated as the traditional Thai New Year, Thai people sprinkle, shoot and pour water on the elders and practically anybody in show of respect and pay respect to Buddha images. Last but not least for fun filled days of celebrations. This year Songkran starts Saturday,, April 13th to Monday, April 15yh. Songkran Festival was previously calculated based on Thai lunar calendar, but in recent years is now fixed based on Western calendar. Songkran Festival falls on 13-15 April yearly, though the celebration usually starts before and ends days after the official holiday.

Songkran Festival, the Water Festival is very closely associated with water. Originally, people gently pour water to elders and family to give good fortune, but now it has evolved to splashing strangers on the streets with water, either with water gun or bucket of water, all in the spirit of good fun. Because of this, Songkran is also often called as the Water Festival.

Songkran 2013 is the most important festival for Thais and they are Thai national holidays. While the official national holiday is for 3 days, from 13 April to 15 April , workers’ days-off often last for as long as a week.

Many Thai people celebrate Songkran by visiting Buddhist temple (Wat) to pay respect to Buddha and to give alms to Buddhist monks. People also clean Buddha images in the temple by gently pouring water on them.

International tourists have mixed preference about this. Some will avoid traveling to Thailand during Songkran festival, but many plan their travel to coincide with the festival and join in the fun of Songkran water fights.

Editor’s Note: Take care as you roam the streets of Hua Hin or greater outside areas. Modern technology produced water guns with great power that may harm your eyes and ears. In addition , white talcum powder is used to give the smearing a meaning and mark your cars , bikes and bodies….on top of that contemporary youth have developed the shampooing of your head. For those of you wearing wigs this may be embarrassing… Have fun! Send us your pictures editorapproach@gmail.com

The Most Economic & Affordable Minicars in Thailand

T

here are many mini cars on the Thai market. Most of them are manufactured in Thailand. If impor ted, the price will go up considerably as ridiculous impor t taxes take the better of your budget. Forget a VW Polo, a Renault or a Peugeot. If you really want cheap, there is an India TATA or a Chinese Cherr y. However, even if these cars have an existence justification, below find a selection of popular cars of Thailand. Deliberately no economy figures as different driving styles influence the fuel consumption. An experienced good driver can move around in a 2.0 l. car at almost the same economy as a right foot heavy person driving a minicar.

Flying Through The Air IMAGINE HOW IT FEELS TO SPEED ACROSS THE WATER POWERED BY A SAIL IN THE SKY; YOU’RE STANDING ON A BOARD, WATCHING THE KITE ABOVE YOU AND YOU JUMP RIGHT IN THE AIR, NOT JUST A FOOT OR TWO, BUT UP TO 30 FEET.

Y

ou hang in the air for a long moment and then you’re down on the water again rushing across the sea. This is Kiteboarding an action sport at its best: challenging, fun and simply unforgettable! Kiteboarding is taking the world by storm. A cross between windsurfing, wakeboarding and paragliding, riders harness the power of the wind with a large flying kite and use it to pull them across the water with their feet strapped to a small board.

If you are a confident swimmer with an average fitness level you can learn this sport, but be warned, once you learn, you will gradually spend less time at work and more time chasing the wind and waves. Its qualities include the need for only light wind (7-10 knots) to ride with, compact equipment that is easy to travel with, and the addictive nature of being free to go where you want using the power of the wind. The sport is easier to learn than it looks, as 90% of kiteboarding involves flying the kite competently. You don’t have to be a muscle builder to learn this sport. It is technique not strength that makes a good kiteboarder. It also explains why women tend to learn the sport better than men. Women tend to work with the kite rather than trying to overpower it and beat it into submission. It is highly recommended to learn the sport at an IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) certified kiteboarding centre where they teach you to become a safe and independent kiteboarder. Kite Boarding Asia use only certified IKO instructors and also have 2 mil euro insurance so be careful from imitations. With competitions being held being in locations all over the world including Thailand. In the year of 2010 and 2011 KBA (kiteboardingasia) was hosting and organize Asia’s first ever Pro Kiteboarding event that haled in Hua Hin and had an amazing success in 2010 and quoted by most of the international pro-riders as one of the best world cup event setups in the history of Kiteboarding. Kite Boarding Asia (KBA) has 14 kiteboarding centers and are the biggest kite centers in Asia , located in Hua Hin ,Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Chumpon, Phuket, Pranburi, Cha-am, Pattaya,Vietnam and Morocco. Kiteboarding Asia centre boasts many locations operating all year around. They have searched all over Thailand to find the best locations for the beginner and intermediate rider, and believe they have found some of the best spots in Asia for learning to kiteboard. They offer courses for the beginner up to advanced riders and stock the largest range of kiteboarding equipment in Asia. t wasn’t original, but it still made good reading and went something like this: You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out. When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game. Simple! It’s fair to say that though tongue-in-cheek, the above explanation would make as much sense as any to the majority of Thais as far as cricket goes. Nevertheless, driven by an influx of expats from cricketing hotbeds, around Thailand the game is showing some signs of growth and there is quite a ‘cricket sixes’ circuit emerging and taking in popular tourist destinations like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, which incidentally each boast at least one Dusit International property.

However, in terms of cricket sixes tournaments here in the kingdom, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and one of the original events, the one hosted annually here in Hua Hin by Dusit Thani, continues to set the standards in terms of the general atmosphere, camaraderie and joie de vivre, a fact further borne out by the growing number of returnees welcomed back each year.

It’s worth noting, that since the inception of the Hua Hin Cricket Sixes, three players have appeared in every tournament, namely David Currie of the local Thai Thevada team, Colin Devonshire, mainstay of the even more local Hua Hin Hopalongs and last, but not least, popular tournament organiser, Thanasak ‘Tom’ Karnasuta, the driving force behind the event.

Indeed, the 17th Hua Hin Cricket Sixes this year boasts a record number of entries, with seven teams coming from both the northern and southern hemisphere, including two teams from Bangladesh and 7 more from Sydney and Melbourne. Seven teams will compete in the Cup competition, a further 7 in the Masters event for over 35s, while popular demand from ageing tournament regulars sees the introduction of a Veterans competitions for those who, to use cricketing parlance, have completed their half century.

Dusit Thani Hua Hin is delighted to extend a warm welcome all players, umpires and spectators of every participating team for what, as always, promises to be a fun event where the taking part is more important than the winning.

Also taking part are 11 first-class players from Australia (see profiles elsewhere), including three who have donned the baggy green cap of Australia with aplomb at Test level. Slated to begin on the Easter weekend, with the first matches on Saturday, 7th April, finals’ day will take place on Wednesday, 11th April, a couple of days before the Songkran Festival.

ECO-TOURISM

The Golden Kingdom Goes Green MODERN TOURIST ARE ACTIVE AND ADVENTUROUS. YET CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE FUTURE OF THE PLANET.

T

hailand, with its rich natural bio-diversity and cultural heritage, shares that concern. Consequently, Thailand’s tourism industry is growing greener by the year. Thai Airways International, for example, became the first airline in Asia to start using algae-based biofuels to lessen damage to the atmosphere. Thailand offers a cornucopia of adventurous and enjoyable activities for eco-tourists. Whether it is trekking, nature tours, bicycle tours, agro tourism or cultural home stays, every corner of the Kingdom can accommodate those seeking a unique and green experience. With 102 national parks, Thailand is a virtual paradise for trekkers. Mountaintop views in the far north are breathtaking on peaks such as Doi Inthanon and Phu Chi Fa, not far from the borders of Myanmar and Laos. Thai Elephant Conservation Center

Bokarani Waterfall

Erawan National Park

The cascading waterfalls of Erawan National Park in western Kanchanaburi province, and the 4,000-year-old cave paintings of Pha Taem National Park in eastern Ubol Ratchathani province, are some of the tantalizing discoveries found on Thailand’s trails. Thailand’s national parks are also an extensive network of wildlife sanctuaries. Two parks, Thung Yai-Huai Khwa Kaeng in the west and Khao Yai in the northeast, are so abundant in bio-diversity that they have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There is also Friends of Wildlife park near Lake Kreang Krachang just west of Hua Hun and Pranburi and the wild elephant reserve near Kui Buri , South of Prachuab Khirikhan and the Sam Roi Yot nature park South of Pranburi on the Dolphin Bay coast. They are the perfect place for studying nature while on holiday. If walking takes too long, pedal your way to adventure on one of the Kingdom’s countless bicycle tours. Take a lap around the glorious Grand Palace in Bangkok or the ancient temples of Sukhothai. Longer cycling tours are available, and can stretch from the plains of central Thailand down to the tropical beaches of the south. If you have ever marveled at the mighty elephant, learn how to handle one at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang province. Agro tourism is an excellent way to experience traditional Thailand, and a delicious one for tourists who farm for strawberries at the Phu Rua Highland Agricultural Research Station in Loei province or at hill tribe plantations in the far north. If hotels are not your thing, try a home stay in a traditional Thai house on stilts above water. Baan Hua Raeng in central Thailand’s Trat province is a community of artisans and craftspeople who live along coffee-colored canals and fruit orchards, much as the people of ancient Siam did, and welcome visitors to their homes. Thailand is a country that is truly blessed with gifts from nature that are cherished by all. Furthermre Thailand’s tourism industry is committed to preserving these treasures for a green and sustainable future.

HILTON’S WINE & DINE

Schlincky´s Corner

H

ello, my name for you is Schlincky, executive Chef of the Hua Hin Hilton and I am going to cook for you every month a different interesting recipe. Most of them will be traditional German but some fusion and modern creation may come along. This time we are doing a “Sauerbraten” as my mum taught me.

Traditional Sauerbraten INGREDIENTS 200 30 20 3 2 20 15 15 5 20 3 5 5 200 250 30 2

g Beef rump g Red wine g Vinegar g Bay leaves g Mustard seed g Onions g Carrots g Celeries g Sugar g Apple juice g Cloves g Salt g Pepper g Brown sauce g Red cabbage g Tomato puree pcs Potato dumplings

PREPARATION Prepare ahead : Steps 1 and 2 should be completed 2–3 days before required. 1.) To make the marinade, place the wine, vinegar, 2 onions, sugar, allspice, peppercorns, bay leaves. 2) Place the meat in a bowl that holds the meat snugly and pour enough cooled marinade over the meat to come at least halfway up the sides. Cover and leave to marinate for 2–3 days in a refrigerator, turning the meat over twice each day.

3) Take the meat from the marinade after 2-3 days, drain well, then pat dry with kitchen paper. Strain the marinade, discard the spices, and keep the liquid. Heat the oil in a large flameproof casserole and brown the meat on all sides. Remove the meat and set aside. Add 1 sliced onion and celery to the pan and fry, stirring constantly, for 5–6 minutes, or until beginning to brown. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir over the heat for 1 minute, then stir in 400ml (14fl oz) of the reserved marinade. Stir until slow boiling. Place the beef on top of the vegetables and baste with the liquid. Cover tightly and place in the oven for 2–21/4 hours, or until the meat is tender when tested with a fork. Lift the meat onto a warmed serving platter and cover loosely with foil. Strain the cooking liquid, pour it into a saucepan and boil rapidly to reduce to about 300ml (10fl oz). Stirring on the heat until the sauce is smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Slice the meat and serve with a little of the sauce spooned over and serve the remaining sauce separately. Serves 6 fully , eager , hungry grown ups – Serve with Potato dumplings or mashed potatoes

ionel is in Asia to prepare for more to come in his young career and play on the Asia Tour. Asking him about his life story he grinned and replied that he was originally from Haut du Rhin ( Upper Rhine river), 22 years old with great ambitions but realizing that a steep hill was in front of him.

A life´s challenge, many more hurdles to take. I came to Thailand one month before the Asian Tour qualifications started to adapt to the weather and game conditions in Thailand. I could not even enjoy the New Year parties in my beloved Elsasse. I actually played as many amateur tournaments as I could before I turned professional. I found out that I could only learn from my own mistakes. Do you have a team that accompanies you at the tournaments in Asia ? To be successful you don´t change a winning team and my coach, Nicolas Subrin supports me 100% with the project we have created together. Nicolas will be with me on about 50 days per year as he has other engagements. We agreed to meet on a two monthly plan. In the mean type we keep in touch through Skype and discuss videos taken of my game in order to correct my technique level. I met a French Osteopath in Hua Hin , Samuel Terrien who is taking care of my physical biomechanics. Malko Schraner who will be my caddy through the Asian Tour has also been my caddy through the preparation tournaments in Europe. Apart from being caddy , Malko takes care of my good mood. We have a great history of close friendship.

MINI BIOGRAPHY “When I was 6 years old when I first discovered the passion for golf, a feeling which has stayed with me throughout. In my younger years the game of golf taught me a great deal about myself and when I finished my school studies, aged 18, being involved in the sport was all I could dream of. This desire took me to two winters of intense training in Brisbane, Australia, then into the Ormesson Golf Club, who helped me for four years , and finally to gain full representative honours with the French National team. The passion within me today is stronger than ever, spurring me towards professional golf, now that I have achieved so much in the amateur game. With my coaches, initially Gérard Gonzalez, and now Nicolas Subrin, I have never shied away from hard work. The hours of work which I strive to achieve daily when not in competition seem relatively painless when I get that rush of adrenaline from a sweetly struck iron shot or the sound of a ball hitting the bottom of the cup. This passion is what makes me tick on the course, what drives me to be a better player, what drives me to be a better person. In short, you could say that this passion is my most loyal caddy. It is allowing me to make a break through into a new stage of my career whilst still allowing me to head to the practice tee with a smile on my face. Certain sacrifices are well worth it and for this I will never betray this passion.”

How many tournaments are you planning to play in 2013 ? Good question! Probably about 15. Should I win one of the tours, I will be able to play a major tour in Europe, but I think I am still far away from that. For this first season I hope I can be among the first 60 players to secure my right to play the tour in 2014…it is a great challenge. I often say that there are not enough hours in the day to manage everything you have to do. There is the golf, indeed, the physical preparation with Samuel Terrien my osteopath, debriefings with my coach via Skype, Nicolas Subrin. But there are also all the rest, solicitations, stewardship, administration. Fortunately, I can count on the invaluable help of my parents and my close friends, even if we are at distance. Nevertheless it takes time, but it is exciting. The most difficult moment is when you arrive at the golf to switch off and forget everything else. I say then: empty your head, focus on your game! In this way, I can build step by step my schedule and my new life. I started training for a few days and I look forward to the arrival of Nicolas Subrin, who will join me Friday. We will set new adjustments to be ready for the two tournaments in a short interval, the Chiangmai Golf Classic, in northern Thailand, March 28th to 31st, then the Panasonic Open of India, April 4th to 7th. For me, it means: Revenge in New Delhi.

My passion for golf is a lifelong goal.

What Food Is Good For You & What Food Is Bad? By Chris Barnyard

THE CONUNDRUM IS THAT I LIKE TO EAT MEAT. NOTHING TASTIER FOR ME THAN A JUICY BEEF SIRLOIN WITH BAKED OR MASHED PATATOS. EATING A STEAK ONCE IN A WHILE WON’T HURT YOU IF YOU ARE HAPPY EATING IT. This earth produces so much varieties of food, sometimes adapted to the area where we live. Asians eat different from Europeans, Eskimos eat different from Amazon Indians. But I also like the planet. And I care about my kid and your kids too which is one of the reasons we are going to publish more about eating habits. However we have to stay objective as there are so many contradictions and scientifically turned over findings and new discoveries. Most of all however and sadly the healthiest food if sprayed with insecticides makes it the worst food we can eat.

Good Foods

Fresh fruit treated with colour injections ( Watermelon), wax (Apples) are unhealthy and damaging. I once attended a presentation of organically grown vegetables where a mild insecticide is used and declare chemically harmless. I had a problem believing.

* Fruits – Citrus with a lot of vitamin C. * Oats and other fibre-rich grains * Pulses (beans, peas) rich in fibres and proteins * Certain vegetable, cold pressed oils which are high in mono-unsaturated (olive oil, canola oil, coconut oil)

So, of course grass fed beef is better. Did you have any doubt? It’s healthier. And cost more too. But apparently, our bodies don’t need us to eat meat every day.

Bad Foods

How much beef exactly are we supposed to eat? We are not supposed to eat beef at all. We can, are allowed…Does grass fed beef solve all the problems? It does not. It is a bit healthier than artificially, antibiotics, unnaturally kept cattle. And then again, meat production produces 1/5 of the world’s greenhouse gases which will have global catastrophic affects.

58

Some foods are genetically modified, look funny and interesting, apparently making them suitable for human consumption. Soy beans as an example, as provided by nature are highly harmful for your health.

Almost anything fresh is a good start. Better still is fresh organic food free of insecticides. Oily fish like deep sea salmon , tuna and mackerel. Vegetables, particularly orange- or dark green ones (carrots, chard, broccoli, squashes like pumpkins)

Most processed foods – which generally contain sugar, salt and fat. Furthermore fatty foods like margarines, butter, cream, most cheeses and fatty meat. * Sugar and sugary foods like cakes and candies * Food containing additives and colourings * Sugary or diet soda drinks * Salty foods * Junk food and takeaways

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Take into consideration that not all fast food is unhealthy. Usually it is the dressing and/or white bread buns, the sugar, MSG and fatty oil of deep-fries with a lot of salt that make healthy food unhealthy. For centuries, Asian people have been consuming fermented soy products such as natto, tempeh, and soy sauce, and enjoying the health benefits. Fermented soy does not wreak havoc on your body like unfermented soy products do. Unfortunately, many Americans who are committed to healthy lifestyles have been hoodwinked and manipulated into believing that unfermented and processed soy products like soymilk, soy cheese, soy burgers and soy ice cream are good for them. A very large percentage of soy - over 90% - is genetically modified and it also has one of the highest percentages contamination by pesticides of any of the foods we eat.

If You are a Vegan You choose to eat only fruit, vegetables and other plant foods like nuts, cereals, peas and beans. You don’t eat any type of animal food: no meat, fish, eggs, milk, yogurt and so on. You choose to avoid all animal foods because they don’t like the way animals are treated and don’t like the idea of eating bits of their dead bodies

A P P R O A C H MA G A ZI N E A P R I L 2 0 1 3

If You are a Vegetarian You may eat dairy products like cheese and milk (lacto-vegetarians) and may also eat eggs (lacto-ovovegetarians). Like vegans, vegetarians may choose their diet because of worries about killing animals to eat. But unlike vegans, they indirectly support the meat industry they maybe disapprove of, usually without realising it. Why? Take cheese, for example. To make cheese you need milk. To make milk, a cow must have a calf first. The calf is then taken away and fattened for slaughter (if a bull calf). And when the cow has reached the end of her ‘useful’ life, she too will be killed and made into various food products. Her skin may be made into shoes. Some people even claim to be ‘vegetarian’ when they eat fish and chicken.

Humans are Omnivores Humans are really omnivores which means they can live off either plant or animal food, or both. Some humans like the Inuit of the Arctic eat almost nothing but animals because they have no choice. Other people, like those of the Hunza valley in Pakistan, eat almost nothing but plant food for similar reasons. So humans have a big advantage. They can live off almost any foods: vegetable, animal or mixes of both. Anyone who tells you humans can’t live without eating animals (as some do) is wrong. However the biggest killer is still sugar….believe it or not..next time more about this.

Latest Cancer Information AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY …

E

very person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients

that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size. When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

Chemotherapy Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites. An effective way to battle cancer is to STARVE the cancer cells by not feeding it with foods it needs to multiply.

What Cancer Cells Feed On Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Note: Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg’s aminos or sea salt. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells will starve. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells will starve. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes t o nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). Avoid non organic coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water--best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it. Cancer Growth

Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines will become putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body’s killer cells to destroy the cancer cells. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiving and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Getting rid of House Dust Mites THE HOUSE DUST MITE (SOMETIMES REFERRED TO BY ALLERGIST AS HDM) IS A COSMOPOLITAN GUEST IN HUMA HABITATIONS.

D

ust mites feed on organic stuff such as flakes of shed human skin which fall of our bodies as we sleep and flourish in the environment of households , bedrooms, sofas. House dust mites are a common cause of asthma and allergic symptoms worldwide. The mite’s gut contains potent digestive enzymes (notably proteases) that persist in their feces and are major inducers of allergic reactions such as wheezing. The mite’s exoskeleton can also contribute to allergic reactions.

Health problems caused by exposure to dust mites are primarily allergic and include: Eye irritation (conjunctivitis) - Running nose and sneezing (rhinitis), Cough and other respiratory problems (asthma) and Skin problems, such as rash and itching. Now there is a company in Hua Hin that helps you get rid of dust mites. They come to your home with a sort of very powerful vacuum cleaner which sucks mot only the dust mites out of mattresses, sofa pillows and carpets among others , but also sucks up their unhatched eggs. Your editor has tried the system and had no stuffed nose in the morning ! It really works.

The average life cycle for a male house dust mite is 10 to 19 days. A mated female house dust mite can last up to 70 days, laying 60 to 100 eggs in the last 5 weeks of her life. In a 10-week life span, a house dust mite will produce approximately 2,000 fecal particles and an even larger number of partially digested enzyme-covered dust particles. Scary isn´t it ?

The Health Care division of ADPR Co. Ltd. will call on you after an appointment is made and eliminate the dust mites in your household. Contact Patrick for more information at: 085 704 0110

Getting Rid of Mold - Fungi MOLDS CAN BE FOUND ALMOST ANYWHERE; THEY CAN GROW ON VIRTUALLY ANY ORGANIC SUBSTANCE, AS LONG AS MOISTURE AND OXYGEN ARE PRESENT.

T

here are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in the indoor environment. However, there is a product available, even in Hua Hin that eliminates Mold Spores, kills them and practically avoids a return within 6-8 months. PurelySaard is used in Hotels, hospitals, Restaurants throughout the globe to eliminate spores. PurelySaard gets rid of bacteria, viruses and contaminated areas.

64

The antibacterial action is ideal for air-conditioned cooled bedrooms, living rooms to avoid bacterial contamination and “legionnaire” disease. Molds form mainly in humid areas like bathrooms, toilets and sinks. Fogging rooms eliminates airborne bacteria as well. PurelySaard is non toxic and not aggressive and settles within 1 hour after fogging bedroom and bathroom. It is EPA approved by the strict US Government health agency. rying to keep up with the amount of new cafes, condos, pool villa developments, restaurants, shopping malls, 7-Elevens and Tesco Expresses for example is no easy task. Hotels, resorts, restaurants, bars, cafes, markets and beaches are full of life. How Hua Hin manages to retain its relaxing atmosphere is not easy to understand – but, it does. Living here full time or part time is addictive. Following Hua Hin’s friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere, where everybody seems to have time for everybody else, you always feel safe and secure. Whether you’re a sun-worshipping beach bum covering yourself in sun cream on Hua Hin’s beautiful beaches or an air-con freak hanging out in the shopping malls, you’ll never get bored. Because of the ever-increasing amount of new visitors to Hua Hin each year, the fundamentals of food and property have to keep pace. Some of the restaurants on offer are now superb. How do you fancy peeling off the shells of freshly caught sea crab or big juicy prawns while sitting in a seaside restaurant gazing over the Gulf of Thailand? The choice of restaurants, from international to Thai, is great. After that, you could wash it all down with a freshly made Mai Tai cocktail or some freshly squeezed mango juice while watching the hustle and bustle of Hua Hin’s nightlife.

Fresh tropical fruit is a must when you visit Hua Hin. It is abundant and served all throughout the streets and beaches. There is an excellent choice of places to stay or properties to buy in Hua Hin. And, there is a choice to suit all tastes and budgets, from back packers to those requiring 5 stars or more. New condominium developments – from Cha am in the North to Kao Tao in the South seem to spring up on an almost daily basis. Build quality and after-sales service is now almost on a par with Western standards. Furthermore, following the ever-increasing demand for rental property in Hua Hin, you can pretty much guarantee to rent out your purchased property when you are not using it for a very healthy passive income. Agents like Hua Hin Property Agent and 2nd Home constantly search for new rental property to offer their clients. In summary, Hua Hin is the perfect place to live and a golden opportunity for investment. Talk of the new high-speed train, from Bangkok to Hua Hin, is widespread in all the national media, which would make Hua Hin even more open and accessible. If you haven’t been here before and it’s your first visit, you will become addicted. If you have been here before, you’re most likely addicted already.
