EDITOR’S FOREWORD

APPROACH PUBLISHING CO.,LTD.

Editor in Chief Gerard Mosselman Office Manager Pimwee P. (Kob) Graphic Office Again, what world are we living in? The Paris happenings shocked us all! Our condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the innocent victims. Hopefully the state heads will react to the import of terrorism to the western world with wisdom. With refugees coming in to Europe by the hundreds of thousands, and I am not criticising aid and refuge to the needy and the persecuted, but at the same time Merkel and partners are opening doors to terrorists who don’t give a da… about lives, innocent by standers, theatre and restaurant guests. I am sure that 99 % of the pursued people that fled Syria are honest folks, threatened by their own. With all the atrocities going on, Thailand is still a safe country to live in.

CULINARY CHRISTMAS DINNER

A Culinary Christmas Dinner David Cunningham of Hua Hin Ham & Bacon Company suggests a culinary serving for Christmas David's butchery and grocers business has become one of the most notable Western food retailers in Hua Hin. For when only the best will do; He specialises in the manufacture of British and Swedish style meat products with a wide range of products including meat pies, sausages, bacon, ham, & burger with the butchery of imported meats, beef, lamb, turkey, fish, as well as the best local pork and chicken.

For your Christmas dinner and lunch you can order readymade roasts of any kind and size. David will suggest your menu composition and assist in selecting the components.

This experienced butcher has a decent range of other groceries and bottled items in stock such as gravies, tea, sauces, flour, and many more items from the U.K. and Sweden. Pre-made roasted joints of meat are also available. David came to Hua Hin about 13 years ago. Having just sold his business in the UK he was taking a break to think about his next endeavour. It was here he ended up meeting someone that had a small business for sale, he saw the potential in the business and made it his own. The Cunningham family look back to a long tradition of food with butchers, chefs and bakers in the family for generations.

The Author sat down with David and discussed what would be the best suggestion for a Traditional Christmas Lunch or Dinner with wines of Monsoon Valley:

Before Dinner a toast with Monsoon Valley Brut Blanc de Blancs

A light sparkling wine from the Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Viognier grapes made in the traditional champenoise method.

As an entrĂŠe - A simple shrimp cocktail with a sauce, rye

crackers and or bread sticks Wine suggestion : Monsoon Valley Chenin Blanc Medium Sweet Second course : Cream of Asparagus Soup Wine suggestion: Monsoon Valley Blended RosĂŠ Made from a trio of Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Shiraz grapes. Main Course : A cooked Turkey with all the trimmings from Hua Hin Ham & Bacon Company. Collected rested from their ovens a Roasted Turkey with Sausagemeat Sage & Onion Stuffing, Bacon Chipolata & real Turkey Gravy. Serve with Roast Potatoes, Roasted Parsnips, Mashed Carrot & Swede and Brussels Sprouts. Cranberry Sauce on the side. Wine suggestion : Monsoon Valley Shiraz For Dessert: David's home made Christmas Pudding is surprisingly light but packs a punch for flavour, serve with brandy butter or your favourite cream.

Most servings and ingredients are available at the shop. Let Hua Hin Ham & Bacon Company help you in composing your festive Dinner. A whole host of other seasonal items are available including Christmas Hams, Chocolate, Sweets, Biscuits, Mince Pies and much more.

A full menu on what is on offer at Hua Hin Ham & Bacon Company is available at their website.

HUA HIN & BEYOND

OPEN

Food Courts in Hua Hin The Permsup Market – Soi 94 Hua Hin is an amazing food town as well, but then again, in Thailand food is very important. As food is a main concern for Thai people, in Hua Hin alone, there is an incredible amount of restaurants and eateries. We went to check out the food courts at Soi 94, Soi 88 and Hua Hin Memory on Soi 51, in the town centre. A brand new open food court that serves Thai delicacies, desserts and drinks with seating all around it, is the The Permsup Market which is reachable from both Soi 94 and 88 as it is located on the connection road between both Sois. We really enjoyed the variety of good hygienic food served in this upcoming new open air food court. We conveniently parked on the huge parking lot so it was easy to drive in and out.

HUA HIN & BEYOND

The Memory Hua Hin - Raruk Hua Hin on Soi 51 Travelling further into town, on Soi 51 we found the Memory Hua Hin food court and events square. Memory Hua Hin formerly was a vacant space with a 100-year-old wooden house built during the reign of King Rama 6. The two-storey bungalow belonged to a Hua Hin-born landlord. It has since been renovated and extended. As the project aims to be a dining centre of delicious,

clean and affordable food we were very tempted to try out several of the food stalls. The food was very nicely fresh made and served in cosy surroundings with live music from the square. Since we were there at lunch we enjoyed an organic cappuccino at the café on the square. We went to see the exhibit of old photographs depicting Hua Hin as it was more than 100 years ago. The project consists of photo zones, souvenir shops, stage shows and over 40 restaurants. It is only a minute away from the beach and a few minutes away from the town centre.

Food Court on Soi 88 The next day, we continued to Soi 88, the food court next to the two 7-11stores, close to the train tracks. Lots of seating, great atmosphere and many different types of foods to choose from. Its a really nice food court! It is clean, comfortable and cheap. Open in the morning from 10:30am till 11:00pm: The huge selection of tasty food will probably not find it´s equal, with draft beer at 60 Baht a pint, makes it a great place to spend an evening. Talking to an Australian couple and a man from Yorkshire, they remarked: “We have been regularly eating at the 88 food court for a couple of years now. I love it as it's very chilled out and the variety stops that old question: “what type of food do you want to eat tonight dear?"....and the Yorkshireman in me likes that it's cheap :-) – “yes, I have to say my eating habits/locations have changed since I ate at Soi 88. I spend less money. My only wish is it would stay open a bit later to enjoy a final pint, but that is HH”. From fried rice to Indian Curries, Pizzas and Vegetarian delicacies, it is all there. Highly recommendable. It grew on us!

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Amphawa Thailand Swimming Monkeys, Floating Markets, Tree Temples and Fireflies - Part 2

Andrew Wood left off in Part I, with a visit to the Wat Bank Kung close to Samut Songkram and Damnoen Saduak floating market. After that he proceeded to the Church of the Virgin Mary.

T

he church is a delightful huge gothic building, a real treat and a surprise to find such a grand building here in Amphawa. It dominates the landscape. I thought I was in Chartres in Northern France. It is an important place of worship for Christians in Thailand and is the oldest church in the country. Christianity was first introduced to Thailand by European missionaries and now represents 1.2% of the national population, which is predominantly Buddhist.

Story and pictures by Andrew J Wood

Next we stopped to visit Wat Suan Luang a temple with a lucky boy spirit - a kumanthep named P'Jook - which followers believe can protect against evil spirits and bring good luck. It's a beautiful small temple and includes a monastery, located on the banks of the river. The focus of devotion being the Buddha images from the nine major temples in Thailand and two small 1-metre-high images of a boy and his sister with top knot hair, thought to be 200 years old.

The Church of the Virgin Mary was constructed in 1890 by Father Paolo Salmone, a French Missionary. The construction of the church took 6 years. Built in French Gothic architectural style. The windows are decorated with beautiful stained glass, and ornate statutes that decorate both the interior and exterior. The chapel has a beautiful wooden vaulted ceiling which is richly gilded. 20

APPROACH December 2015

After returning to the hotel for a quick wash and brush up, we set off again in the early evening for the famous

Amphawa floating market, an authentic working market open from 12 noon to 2000 hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays. Make sure to come early and spend a few hours here. The air is heavy with wonderful aromas from the numerous food stalls (delicious!) and local music adds a background buzz. The market takes place along the walkways of Amphawa Canal, a small tributary of the Mae Khlong River. It can get busy so prepare to move quickly with light clothing, good shoes and your camera. It's one of my favourite markets.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND from what I could see, used to buy and sell produce to the local population, which added to it's charm. Yes tourists are factored in and small stalls cater for the souvenir hunters and the thirsty!

We took a long tail boat at the market to see the fireflies along the river. I had heard so much about nature's Christmas tree lights and wondered if they would live up to expectation. They certainly did! It was wonderful. The fireflies are amazing and they all flash in unison tree by tree. How they synchronise like that, I'm unsure, but I thoroughly enjoyed this unique sight. After a good dinner and overnight at our hotel, we set off early the following day to watch palm sugar being made in a home 'factory' (actually it was more a farm). The sap of the coconut palm is reduced to make a caramel brown sugar often used in Thai cooking and Thai desserts khanom. This was a real delight. The 'factory' is tucked into a small farm at the side of the road covered in trees and plants and very local in appearance. We watched as the sap was reduce by boiling into a toffeelike consistency. After cooling it's package and sold locally.

As we were so close, we decided to also visit Thailand's iconic Damnern Saduak Floating Market. It's the largest and most chaotic of all the floating markets. It was a Sunday morning and the market was very busy and very crowded. However, to be honest, it was my least favourite of the three markets we visited. On arrival we were immediately ensconced in a narrow canal and jostled and hurried. It felt cramped. The canals or klongs are filled with flat-bottom boats piled high with fresh produce, each jockeying for position and paddled by ladies - the whole experience is very colourful, very unique, and great for photographs. Then we headed off to another 'secret' - the Tha Kha floating market. It's not large, however it's very easy to get around and being a canal market means you can easily walk around without the need to get on a boat. What to do here? It's very photogenic and a good place to walk around and shop. The food is fresh and delicious, cooked Ă la minute right in front of you.

I started to hate the long tail boats though with their huge truck engines and drive-shaft propellers. They became a nuisance to me, up close they were to be endured not enjoyed. They were noisy and belched out fumes and are much too 'long' to easily navigate the narrow canals. Paddle power was the way to go and we spent an hour being skilfully transported around the klongs, not by horse-power but human-power.

The market is a weekend (Sat and Sun) market and only operates in the morning from 0600 hours to 12 noon, and

THAI NATURE

MULBERRY Morus Alba

by Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The mulberry or mulberry trees (Morus) are like the figs (Ficus), a plant genus in the family of the mulberry family (Moraceae). Distribution

Leafs

With twelve naturally occurring species, the genus was originally spread throughout the temperate and subtropical regions of the northern hemisphere with the exception of Europe.

The green leaves of the white mulberry are the breeding source of the silk winder and were the primary purpose for which the mulberry trees have been introduced to Europe. Whole landscapes - mostly in southern Europe - were dominated with mulberry trees, silkworm rearing was characterized by the silk production.

Mulberries were already spread in Roman times in all warmer regions of Europe, which climate is also suitable for viticulture. The three most famous species are white mulberry ( Morus alba ) and black mulberry ( Morus nigra ) and the red mulberry ( Morus rubra from North America ). White mulberries grow often only shrubby style. Suitable sites should be mainly warm and protected from the wind. Favourable are loose, fresh, deep, nutrient-containing and calcareous soils.

Description Mulberries are deciduous trees or shrubs that reach stature heights of 6-15 meters. They produce a white milky sap and have a reddish-brown bark. The leaf shape can vary considerably even on the same tree. Stipules are always present, but may fall off early. Morus species are monoecious (monoecious) or dioecious (dioecious) separate lineated. The 42

APPROACH December 2015

Even in Prussia for this reason white mulberries at avenues were planted on marketplaces and schoolyards. Cheap silk imports from Southeast Asia in the early 20th century did the European sericulture redundant and therefore also the mulberries were displaced from the avenues, where they were often be found.

Wood and paper The wood of the white mulberry is highly valued as tough, durable and to be well-polished. In parks and gardens mostly ornamental forms of white mulberry are planted, because it is winter harder than the black and strongly colouring fruits of the Black mulberry and are undesirable near traffic areas. The Kozu (цео, Kozo) is known as the fibres of the wood, used in the manufacture of Japanese paper. In addition, the wood is used in the Mediterranean region for the production of booze and wine barrels.

THAI NATURE In Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, Burma), the bark is processed into handmade paper. This mulberry paper serves as a material for photo albums, boxes and paper flowers. From the tree trunks in Asian countries (particularly in Turkey and in the Persian-speaking world) quality musical instruments (stringed instruments) as the Saz, Baglama or Cura are produced.

Fruits The fruits of the three types mentioned, are edible. The look is reminiscent in shape of elongated blackberries, the colour ranges from off-white (white mulberry) to red to black However, the type cannot be determined alone on the fruit colour, since there are also white mulberries with dark fruits, as well as black mulberries with white and bright fruit. Mulberry fruits are very sweet and juicy, the white mulberry is considered partly as tasteless, while the red and black mulberry are more intense in flavour and aromatic. The fruit on the tree ripen gradually over several weeks and therefore they cannot be harvested at the same time. In some countries they put towels or sheets under the trees, the ripe mulberries then fall down when shaken, while the unripe fruit to remain on the branches. As a market fruit, fresh mulberries have virtually no importance, since they are too soft and juicy for transport, and spoil too quickly. The dried mulberry is gaining slowly increased popularity. The taste is similar to raisins, but leaves no aftertaste. The mulberries lose their colour when dried and appear sand coloured to transparent, are very firm and have a rough outer shell. In medicine, often reference is made to the shape of the mulberry. Thus, the appearance of gallstones is compared with the mulberries. The fertilized egg in the so called 32-cell stage, after

fertilization by the sperm and before implantation in the womb, is defined as morula or mulberry germ. Mulberry trees are mentioned once in Ovid’s Metamorphoses: In Pyramus and Thisbe is told, that the colour of mulberries was originally white and the blood that Pyramus shed, penetrated into the roots of the tree and coloured the mulberries Blueberries contain about 10 percent sugar, unfortunately they are not very rich in vitamins. The mulberry jelly tastes excellent, and mulberry syrup is very popular with children. An infusion of mulberry leaves was administered earlier against high fever and constipation. In the Balkans, the leaves of the black mulberry are regarded as anti-diabetic (hypoglycemic). The leaves are used in the form of a tea infusion, used to treat bladder and urinary Antibacterial, cough-relieving, anti-asthmatic, analgesic, diuretic and expectorant.

CYCLING FOR CHARITY

BERT VAN DER KROFT The f lying Du tchman

On 5 April at 11:00 am, Bert van der Kroft, a member of Kiwanis , left the Tourist Information Office at the market place in Valkenswaard - the Netherlands for a bike ride of about 17000 km. With five million pedals pushers, 75 per minute, 4500 per hour for about 1100 hours. He needed about ten months from Valkenswaard to reach the south of Thailand. The trip took Bert from Holland through Germany and Austria along the River Danube to the Black Sea, Bulgaria and Istanbul, Iran, Turkmenistan, China and the Himalaya highlands of Tibet to the ultimate goal of the challenge: Thailand.

suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

Future Kids Ghana: This project

is targeted at giving every child an opportunity to receive a good education and is the key to unlocking every potential trapped within. Future Kids Ghana aims at creating favourable environments for teaching and learning by reaching out to children in Ghana, especially in the rural areas, with education support. Such support items include libraries, school buildings and, learning centres for information and communication technology. Other forms of support are books, pens/ pencils, novels and clothes. After ten months, the gruelling pedalling journey finished in Hua Hin where his long time neighbour Guus Peeters with family and friends and above all Bert´s son Dorus awaited the arrival of the flying Dutchman.

With this trip, he called attention to two special projects: The Eliminate Tetanus Project of Kiwanis & UNICEF and Future Kids Ghana.

The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis

International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60.000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating tiny new-borns 46

APPROACH December 2015

At the airport in Hua Hin was a group of 25 people waiting for him. Under the guidance of police with flashing light and a pickup with a large shield out by the city the last 12 kilometers. Dorus and Guus and a number of other cyclists accompanied him on bicycles to the final destination. There they had a great welcome party organized with delicious Thai food and a lot of friends and acquaintances. A donation of 20,000 baht towards the project was handed over by Guus Peeters.

Bert: “It is a strange feeling, that after so many months, realizing that the trip was really over. A journey with so many highlights, no setbacks or really nasty situations. There was never a dangerous situation and the most troubled countries we read and hear about in the news hosted Bert with the warmest welcome and hospitality, even from the poorest. He is happy to be back home and may even be thinking of a next challenge.

MONEY AFFAIRS

PULLING UP YOUR ROOTS AT HOME By Jerry Mcmenamin

Settling in Thailand I get many enquiries from new arrivals to Thailand who have decided to pull up roots in their native country and settle here. Most have given a lot of thought to the idea and made a decision over a few if not many previous visits. I myself first came here in 1984. Do I regret the move? Not for one second. I am far from being a paragon of virtue but over the years I have noticed that the malcontents living here who complain the most either drink too much, work too much or are obsessed with sex. So I think balance in everything is a prerequisite to a comfortable life here. I worked for a decade with the British insurer Legal & General selling insurance and investments. That background was of great assistance to me as I knew how to arrange my financial affairs when I decided to move here. While there is no substitute for a face to face meeting with an adviser, there are some general rules the expat should follow.

48

APPROACH December 2015

I would try and avoid taking advice from the big offshore banks. They are usually tied to a few specific providers and give you limited choice as to what securities you can purchase. Forget your home based financial institutions. They generally have no idea about offshore investing. Try also and make sure any investment you purchase is regulated. Try and appoint an adviser who lived in this country and who is properly qualified and just as important has a stake in this country and who is not likely to disappear overnight. You are in a position also as an expat not to be limited in the amount of tax

free investment you can make. But now the world is your oyster for tax freedom irrespective of your country of origin unless you’re an American. Talk to your adviser to ensure that the sale of assets onshore can be transferred offshore where you can domicile your investments and take a tax free income for life paid tax free into your Thai bank or what I think is better open an offshore bank and then transfer to a Thai bank. For European investors there are indeed so many options that, in the euphoria of a new lifestyle it is easy to forget the biggest financial benefit of all in being an expatriate-tax freedom.

THAI LEGAL

DEFAMATION In

THAILAND In Thailand, defamation or bad mouthing, may it be orally or in writing is taken seriously and punished harshly.

W

hoever, imputes, or publicises anything to another person or family before a third person in a manner likely to impair the reputation of such other person or to expose such other person to be hated or scorned, is said to commit defamation, and shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding one year or fined not exceeding twenty thousand Baht, or both. A person, in good faith, expresses any opinion or a statement, by way of self-justification or defence, or for the protection of a legitimate interest or in the status of being an official in the exercise of his functions, or by way of fair comment on any person or thing subjected to public critics, or by way of fair report of the open proceeding of any Court or meeting, shall not be guilty of defamation and will not be prosecuted. In case of defamation, if the person prosecuted for defamation can prove that the imputation made by him is true, he shall not be punished. But he shall not be allowed to prove if such imputation concerns personal matters, and such proof will not be benefit to the public. Defamation done negligently or without intent under the Thai Criminal Code does not constitute an offense; however, negligent defamation may be subject to a civil prosecution under the Thai Civil and Commercial Code. Lèse majesté is the crime of violating majesty, an offence against the dignity of a reigning sovereign or against a state. It has been prohibited by the law of Thailand since 1908. In 1932, when Thailand’s monarchy ceased to be absolute and a constitution was adopted, it too included 50

language prohibiting lèse-majesté. The 2007 constitution of Thailand, and all seventeen versions since 1932, contain the clause, “The king shall be enthroned in a position of revered worship and shall not be violated. No person shall expose the king to any sort of accusation or action. The Thai Criminal Code elaborates in section 112: “Whoever defames, insults or threatens the king, queen, heir-apparent, or regent shall be punished with imprisonment of three to fifteen years.” In an incidence of defamation in Thailand in which a parent was the subject of some gossip in public, to her children at school, the parent spoke to the person who started these malicious rumours and threatened her with legal action if she did not immediately cease and desist. An apology was immediately forthcoming and the rumours stopped quickly. Summa Summarum: Be careful what you say about others. The comments may backfire badly.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

BEER WINE vs.

Which one is healthier?

Few drinks (except tea or coffee) divide the world so spectacularly as beer or wine. There’s no accounting for taste, of course – but there are subtle differences in the way they affect your body and determine your health. Is one more fattening than another? How do their heart benefits compare? And which gives the worse hangover? Which gets you intoxicated more quickly? A pint of lager and a medium glass of wine both contain around the same alcohol content – two or three British units (16-24g). However, your descent into intoxication relies on that alcohol passing into your blood stream – and the speed at which this happens can depend on the type of drink. A glass of wine will go to your head more quickly than a pint of beer. What drink is the more fattening? - Which gives you the biggest paunch? At face value, the myth of the beer belly should be true. Alcohol itself contains calories, not to mention all the sugars that make our favourite drinks so tasty. And at around 180 calories, a pint of beer has 50% more energy content than a small glass of wine – enough to cause you to pile on the pounds. For moderate drinkers, however, the differences seem to be minimal. A recent review of studies concluded that neither wine nor beer drinkers tend to put on weight over the shortterm. Slim differences, but wine may have the edge Hops or grape... which is the worst the following morning? Which gives the worst hangover?

We don’t even fully understand what causes it. Dehydration is likely to be an important factor (alcohol makes us pee more liquid than we take in) but it may also be caused by some of the byproducts of fermentation. Called congeners, these organic molecules give each drink its unique flavour and aroma, but they may also be toxic to the body, resulting in the throbbing head and nausea that usually follows a night of excess. So provided you haven’t turned to the hard stuff, you can’t blame your choice of drink for your agony. Red wine contains polyphenols, which soothe inflammation and provide other health benefits Which is better (or worse) for my health? We are often told that a glass of wine a day could help rejuvenate the body, reducing our risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. This life-giving sustenance is thought to come from “polyphenols” (found especially in red wine) that soothe inflammation and mop up damaging chemicals in the body. Beer is conspicuously absent from these health bulletins, but it too contains a fair share of polyphenols, and seems to offer modest benefits, akin to white wine but less than red wine. Clearly, none of this gives you a free pass to binge drink, but if drank in moderation, a glass a day really may keep the doctor away.

Despite their best efforts, scientists have yet to conquer the drinker’s most formidable foe: The Hangover.

Overall verdict: When it comes to health benefits, wine edges it as the best medicine. 58

Alternative Medicine

Naturopathy A

lternative medicine is any practice that is put forward as having the healing effects, but does not originate from evidence gathered using the scientific method and is not part of biomedicine. Examples include new and traditional medicine practices such as homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic and energy medicine, various forms of acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, and Christian faith healing. As there is no good quality evidence that homeopathy is an effective treatment for health conditions, some practitioners also claim that homeopathy can prevent malaria or other diseases. There is no evidence to support this and no scientifically plausible way that homeopathy can prevent diseases. Other forms of alternative medicine, such religious hand healing, has been criticized by prominent figures in science and medicine as being quackery, nonsense, fraudulent, or unethical. Naturopathy or naturopathic medicine is a form of alternative medicine employing a wide array of "natural" modalities, including homeopathy, herbalism, and acupuncture, as well as diet (nutrition) and lifestyle counselling. A Naturopath’s ability to apply natural 60

methods of healing is of considerable importance. Frequently, a Naturopath is the last resort in a patient’s long search for health. Providing personalised care to each patient, the Naturopath sees humankind as a holistic unity of body, mind, and spirit. The healing power of nature- nature has the innate ability to heal

Identify and treat the cause

there is always an underlying cause, be it physical or emotional

Do no harm

a Naturopath will never use treatments that may create other conditions

Treat the whole person

when preparing a treatment plan, all aspects of a person’s being are taken into consideration

The Naturopath as a teacher

a Naturopath empowers the patient to take responsibility for his/her own health by teaching self-care

Prevention is better than cure

a Naturopath may remove toxic substances and situations from a patient’s lifestyle to prevent the onset of further disease. Man is part of nature and the universe, and health was achieved by living in accordance with this principle. Harmony is fostered with proper nutrition, water treatments, rest, sunshine and fasting.

Medicine, religion and science were intimately related and man is seen as a whole – a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual being. The same vital force or chi (qi) that made up the universe and nature flowed through man and it is his dislocation from this source that caused illness. Early Naturopaths realised that if you could restore the vital force to the patient, the body would naturally heal itself.

Editor´s note: A friend of mine has

battled high blood pressure for quite some time now. Cardiologists, nephrologists and regular MDs have prescribed BP reducing medication which focus on the symptoms but not on the cause. A Naturopath has recommended alternative natural herbs and spices to detox liver, kidneys effecting the entire internal organs, and sticking to a vegetarian diet with plenty of fresh fruit, at least 2 litres of water a day, no sugar and little salt. After a couple of weeks, his blood pressure started to drop and is almost back to normal taking only ¼ of the BP reducing medication. Although the body has to get used to the “new” situation, I firmly believe that pharmaceutical lobbies prevent swift healing medicine from appearing on the market. In the USA, alone, 90% of the alternative educational institutions were closed by the government, lobbied by the pharmaceutical giants.

CHILDREN and

VIDEO GAMES A Surprising New Study On How Video Games Impact Children Parents tend to approach video games like junk food: Games are fine in moderation but ultimately they are an evil temptation that’s more bad than good. But according to an article published in Pediatrics: The Official Journal Of The American Academy of Pediatrics, we may be fundamentally mistaken in our thinking about how video games impact behaviour. A study of “2436 male and 2463 female young people, ranging in age from 10 to 15 years.” Entitled “Electronic Gaming and Psychosocial Adjustment,” The study looked at how different amounts of gameplay impact gamers, “the net effects that different levels of gameplay have on children’s psychosocial development.” What was found was surprising. It fills significant gaps in psychosocial gaming research and may change the way we think about gaming’s impact in general. The mainstream view of gaming has become less curmudgeonly in recent years–we no longer think of games as a horrible evil demon trying to corrupt our children. However, most parents still see games as a negative influence on their children. They think it needs to be limited and restricted. They think it can lead to ‘sins’ like sloth and apathy. Of course, we use the word ‘sins’ with some cynicism. We want to point out that when it 64

APPROACH December 2015

comes to our conceptions of developmental norms, ‘healthy’ is often code for ‘morally preferable.’ After all, what do we want our children to develop into? And how much influence do parents really have? In developmental psychology, there may be inadvertent political agendas underlying many accepted theories. What we consider ‘healthy’ seems to be the acculturated development of personality traits that resonate in accordance with a particular view of normalcy. We should have no objection to the idea that we come to a cultural agreement on traits that we consider to be beneficial to the collective. Creating norms and taboos that benefit a social community is the very work of ‘civilization.’ However, we do wonder if it is honest to use a word like ‘healthy,’ which implies an empirical truth rather than a flexible choice. Let’s not forget that these are collective agreements. Is gaming healthy? It depends on how we collectively define ‘health.’ It was found that in some cases, gaming is beneficial. “Compared with non-players, children who typically invest less than one-third of their daily free time showed higher levels of prosocial behaviour and life satisfaction and lower levels of conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, and emotional symptoms.” There was a lot written about the many studies that show that gaming can impact children in ways that may be in the

best interest of society. It was pointed most often to the way game based learning nurtures meta-cognitive skills (the ability to think about your own thinking). Society as a whole values meta-cognitive skills and therefore considers development of these skills to be ‘healthy.’ But that does not necessarily mean that gaming is like eating vegetables. That is, it is not proactively nutritious. However, the findings do indicate “that electronic play has salutary functions similar to traditional forms of play; they present opportunities for identity development as well as cognitive and social challenges.” In other words, video games are comparable to other kinds of imaginative play. And play, most folks tend to agree, is of vital importance. Adults and children need more of it. However, the popular notion that somehow video games belong in a different category–such as ‘bad play’–is absurd.

KIDS & EDUCATION substantively smaller than those observed for passive forms of media entertainment.” Still, don’t let your kids play games all day long. “Results from the current study also showed that children who spend more than half their daily free time [playing video games] showed more negative adjustment.” As long as the kids play three or less hours a day things are fine. But go over three hours and things change. “Compared with non-players, these players reported higher levels of both externalizing and internalizing problems and lower levels of prosocial behaviour and life satisfaction.” What does this all mean? Mostly, it tells us that most of our common assumptions about the way gaming impacts child psychology are potentially wrong. They are grounded in some kind of moral fantasy that’s not necessarily aligned with the empirical ways in which we view the world (or at least the ways we claim to view the world). Even those organizations that we tend to trust when it comes to health recommendations may be wrong when it comes to video games. “The present results advance the idea that the link between electronic gameplay and psychosocial functioning is nuanced and suggests that the limits focused guidelines advanced by the American Academy of Paediatrics, American Medical Association, and Royal College of Paediatrics may need further evaluation.” When it comes to video games, it is time to put the anti-tech narratives aside and stop parenting with an on/off switch. “The current study suggests guidelines may not be as simple as limiting exposure.” Things are not black and white. “Indeed, responsible guidelines may require an evidence-based approach that weighs the relative benefits and drawbacks of varying levels of engagement and different forms of electronic games.”

Studies suggests that there’s little distinction between gaming and other favourable activities.

“Compared with factors shown to have robust and enduring effects on child well-being such as family functioning, social dynamics at school, and material deprivations, the current study suggests the influences of electronic gaming, for good or ill, are not practically significant.”

Parents need to reconsider their approach to electronic media. This bad vs. good moralistic approach might be comfortable, but it also seems to be out of joint with the kinds of critical thinking skills that we consider to be in the best interest of our children. Is this how we teach our kids to think about things? Hardly. We insist that they learn to be comfortable with some level of ambiguity.

That’s a pretty shocking finding. And imagine many parents will accept that all of those whimsical Nintendo family games are fine, even potentially beneficial when played as a family. There have been a ton of studies that show the positive impact of family gaming. Still, what about age-inappropriate gaming? Surely conscientious parents will object that first person shooters, other violent games, and sexual imagery must be unhealthy for young kids. After all, these things are immoral; we must protect our children from these dangerous temptations, right? Not necessarily. On the contrary, studies suggests that the ratings of games hardly correlate to typical conceptions we have of ‘healthy’ development of prosocial behaviours. Age-inappropriate gaming did not significantly impact the results (at least not when compared to movies and television). The study indicates that “the negative effects of age-inappropriate gaming on hostile thoughts, feelings, and real world behaviours are December 2015 APPROACH

COSMETICS & FASHION

What to wear on Xmas & New Year

Sorting out Christmas presents for your entire family and all of your friends is a cinch compared to figuring out your Christmas day outfit in Thailand. Why so tricky? Well, there's just so much to consider; looking family-affair appropriate, finding a no-sweat approach to Christmas Day heat, and finding a look that (comfortably) allows for second helpings of lunch. Add to that the fact you could be running from lunch with your family to dinner with friends, there's often a number of dress codes to consider.

MOTORING MOTORING

Best Estate Cars Most of the estate cars with exception of the Chevrolet are imported and quite expensive. However here are some facts about the best estate cars on the market. These models have variable prices as their engine choices are between Petrol & Diesel, Turbo or non-Turbo. Prices below are pure estimates and not confirmed by either importers or manufacturers. We are highlighting the : – BMW 3 series Touring – Chevrolet – Mazda 6 Tourer – Honda Civiv Tourer, the Mercedes E- Class Estate and the VW Passat Variant.

VW Passat Variant It may bear a striking similarity with the old car, but the eightgeneration Passat Estate is totally new. The Volkswagen Passat is based on an enlarged version of the VW Group’s versatile MQB platform. This eighth-generation model is designed to be an upmarket family car, while the Estate has more space than ever. There are a number of engines sizes to choose from. The cheapest is a 118bhp 1.6-litre TDI while further up the range there is a 2.0-litre TDI with 148bhp or 187bhp and a twin-turbocharged, high-performance 2.0-litre called BiTDI, this engine sits at the top of the range, has 237bhp at its disposal and only comes with a twin-clutch DSG automatic gearbox and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Total boot space 1,780 litres. Estimated starting price in Thailand 2,400,000 Baht.

BMW Series 3 Touring Practicality and driving fun come together in the BMW 3 Series Touring. It serves up all the performance and fun of the compact executive saloon in a spacious, flexible estate package, plus buyers needn’t compromise on efficiency, either. Interior quality is as good as in the saloon, and equipment is equally generous across the SE, Sport, M Sport, Modern and Luxury specs. There’s a similar range of engines, too, with the most efficient version being the 316d. Its 2.0-litre diesel promises fuel consumption of 62.8mpg and 119g/km of CO2 emissions. Boot space 1,500 litres. xPrice estimated over 4,000,000 Baht

Mazda 6 Tourer Genuine style is a rare feature in an estate, as it’s no small task to squeeze the large proportions of a load-lugger into an attractive design. But the Mazda 6 Tourer has style in spades. The Japanese firm’s designers have done an incredible job of stretching out the saloon’s swooping lines, and have created one of the most handsome cars in class. Even better: it drives as good as it looks. The engines have plenty of punch and are refined at speed. The ride is comfortable, the steering sharp and the body control is good, too. The 6 Tourer can’t quite match the class leader’s for cabin and boot space, but it’s still competitive. And it’s economical, too. The 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel will do 64.2mpg and 116g/km CO2. Boot space 1,680 l. Although not available in Thailand, the estimated import price with ASEAN privileges, could be approx. 2,500,000 Baht 72

APPROACH December 2015

MOTORING

Honda Civic Tourer The Honda Civic Tourer comes with a class-leading 624 litres of boot space - beating load capacity figures of larger cars such as the Vauxhall Insignia Sport Tourer and Ford Mondeo Estate. Honda has a solid reputation for reliability, so potential buyers shouldn’t have too much to worry about. The Tourer is also a safe car with a range of safety systems available both as standard and as optional extras. The highlight of the Civic Tourer range is the 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine - offering 74.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 99g/km. It’s a real gem, with a smooth and punchy power delivery, especially when coupled to the slick shifting six-speed manual gearbox. Boot space 1,650 litres. Estimated Price in Thailand 1,300,000 Baht

Mercedes E Class Estate The giant of the estate market is the Mercedes E-Class Estate, as its massive 695-litre load bay can be expanded to an enormous 1,950 litres. The interior offers plenty of room for the other five occupants, plus there’s cubbyholes and cup-holders dotted around the cabin. Seven airbags and ESP ensure driver and passengers are well protected. Optional safety kit includes night vision and lane departure warning. Of course, all this comes at a price: the E-Class is competitive with rivals like the BMW 5 Series Touring, but options soon increase the cost. Buyers are advised to go for one of the diesels: the E220 and E250 CDI Estates use stop-start to keep fuel consumption down to 58.9mpg and emissions to 125g/km. Boot space 1,950 litres. Price: Starting from 4,190,000 Baht incl. VAT

Chevrolet Cruze Estate At the front, the Cruze SW follows the styling of its saloon and hatchback sisters: the bold two-part grille and huge gold badge mean it will stand out in any car park or high street. Perhaps inevitably on such a car, the design of the rear end isn’t as adventurous, but the estate body has certainly been grafted on quite neatly. It’s not too boxy, and the standard roof rails give it quite a sleek look. The only word of caution is that the basic LS models don’t have the alloy wheels fitted to the LT and LTZ. Cruze, the mid-entry level sedan is not just about style, beneath well designed sculpted body there lies powerhouse integrated in 2.0-litre VCDi diesel engine, 1.8-litre Ecotec and 1.6-litre engine. 2.0-litre diesel engine throws out maximum power output of 163 HP at 3800 rpm along with the peak torque of 360 Nm at 2000 rpm. 1.8-Litre delivers 141 HP at 6200 rpm and high torque of 177 Nm at 3800 rpm. Boot space 1,478 litres. Estimated starting price at 1.200.000 Baht.

Tennis Rackets

COOLEST GADGETS

Buying the right tennis racket can be a confusing thing with the different styles, sizes, brands and choices available. We have the information you need, right here, to understand how to decide which tennis racket is the best for you and help you take the guess work out of it.

Top 3 Tennis rackets 2015 played by the top 4 most successful players

Graphene Radical Pro & Speed Pro

- Andy Murray & Novak Djokovic Price: 6,000.- Baht (approximate price) Andy Murray's and Novac “ Nole” Djokovic´s weapon of choice is a baseliner's battle-axe, designed for bludgeoning balls back to the other side of the court. At 310g (unstrung), it's one of the heavier rackets you'll find on the market - but Head have managed to marry power with control, which means the racket's touch is surprisingly deft.

Wilson Pro Staff RF97 Autograph

- Roger Federer

Price: 5,800.- Baht Wilson's association with Roger Federer goes back years. The Swiss master has used a variation of the Pro Staff rackets. The first thing to say about the racket is that it's not for the faint hearted. At 340g (unstrung), it's a monster, requiring strength and supreme timing to connect with the ball. The second thing to say is that once the ball has been hit, it really stays hit. With so much power strung up in the frame, you don't have to bring much oomph to shots; instead, the player becomes a guide, pointing the ball in the right direction and letting the racket do the rest.

Yonex VCORE Tour G - Stanislav Wawrinka Price: 7,500.- Baht Yonex peddle their two VCORE Tour G rackets (one weights 330g, the other 310g) as powerful and spin-loaded tools for the offensive minded player. The 310g iteration is actually a great all-round racket for a wide range of club players. Stan “The Man” Wawrinka´s weapon of choice. December 2015 APPROACH

HUA HIN TENNIS 2015

OPEN

Hua Hin is finally on the ATP & WTA international map!

The ATP Challenger Hua Hin Open 2015 was a complete success although the visitors were less than expected or hoped for. Entrée during the elimination matches was free and for the semi and finals, a relatively low fee of 500.- Baht was asked. Watching the stars play usually costs a lot more.

Our small coastal fishing village is difference in speed and skill between the top 300 tennis players. What makes great rapidly growing. The Vana Nava water jungle park, the soon to be completed Blu Port Mall and the international tennis centre was all planned by Khun Suwat Liptapanlop, President of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT). Before the tournament Khun Suwat said: “We are ready to host the two tournaments at Hua Hin Centennial Club with its centre court having a capacity of a minimum 1,000 seats,” …and they did! Some of the comments of the international players range from great to astonishing and very well organized. Friendly atmosphere and helpful smiling staff. Good food at the restaurant. Unfortunately, the club facilities and main grounds were not finished yet but the 11 courts sparkled under the blue Hua Hin sky with rain that stopped daily in time to get the players on court. Players from all over the world competed with each other, although the top ten were not here. Qualification rounds for those having wild cards and last but not least in the quarter, semi and final matches you could see world top tennis. There is little

Concer ts and Live shows in Bangkok DECEMBER : Michael Learns To Rock - Rock & Pop Venue: Royal Paragon Hall, Bangkok Michael Learns to Rock (also known as MLTR) is a Danish pop/soft rock band that performs songs in English.
