aking a trip down South is interesting as the further you are away from Prachuab K. the better the roads get. Now it may be that there is less heavy traffic down to Chumpon which I doubt, or the contractor has pocketed less of the construction budget for personal purposes. I bet on the latter. It is a disgrace how these roads are. Trucks trying to avoid damage to their suspensions are jeopardising other traffic. I kept humming John Denver´s Country Road song, hoping for better conditions. Once back again to our sleepy town on the Gulf of Siam, Soi 112 took away my homesick feeling. No idea how planning of road infrastructure is done here or whether it does not exist at all. The latter? Internationally it seems that we are slowly creeping out of the black deficit hole and Europe, who else, is more transparent in their figures than big brother US. However the other side of the medal shows that deflation is also a danger to economies as prices tumble not only because of reduced consume. Mario Daghi, European Central Bank President, also known for Daghinomics has , in co-operation with the Deutsche Bundesbank more or less saved Europe from worse by keeping it united. The UK now realizes that without Europe mainland or Euro, for whatever it may value , there will be no progress in their own economy. Yes we do need each other as China struggles as well. If you export 80% of your goods to the US, reduced buying power will hit you hard as well. But we are still fighting those useless wars in the east where “poppy fields forever” bloom, supported by a useless, ineffective but costly maintained international army providing the arms industry and its associated suppliers with plenty of cash flow.
And endangering the lives of fine young men and women as Taliban, whom the US put in place in earlier days anyway, rockets fly over their fancy helmets, whilst enabling fresh heroin supplies to our western world. I like pope Francis, he is at least not scared to reveal us his dogma. Yes to condoms and no to abortions. Would abortions be less invasive or mentally less stress, it should be ok after Gerard Mosselman (GMoss) a made mistake or rape. However, still in Chief Editor our modern world and in those countries calling us disbelievers and sinners, unfortunate women are being punished for crimes committed to them while the “corpus delicty” walks free and is probably admired by some of his buddies. Amnesty writes me regular mails and I extend them my vote. Politically we worry about atrocities and human rights, but no one, including our Baraks, Merkels and Putins does anything about it. Yes they can, these are all minorities crimes. Countries who claim that they are going to take us over and who´s followers want to live in Western countries. As Putin said, if you don’t like it here, go back to your Fatherland. Positive thinking and being happy is the best medicine and cure for many diseases. In at least 23 states of the USA, the sale of cannabis is being allowed. VAT on top of course as this is now another income for the treasurer. In our health & wellness section APPROACH reveals however, that cannabis mixed with virgin coconut oil can be a cure for cancer and other deceases. Russian Orthodox New Year in Hua Hin
T
he Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas Eve on January 6th. This day is last one of Lent, which starts on November 28th and lasts for 40 days till January 6th. On this day many believers don’t eat food at all. They will be able to eat only soaked grains once Bethlehem’s star appears in the sky. However, the lovely Russian and Ukraine community of Hua Hin celebrated this event at the Yellow Balloon venue on Pala U road.There was plenty to eat and drink and Danish Chef Rene excelled in composing real Russian Food in his hilltop kitchen. Check the pictures for happy faces after the gourmand event. The Yellow Balloon is up again after a stormy season with an even larger basket to carry up to 26 persons at one time. Classical Concert at the Hyatt Regency
O
n February 28 the Hyatt presented two brilliant and lovely performers for a Classic Concert, Iryna Krechkovsky, violin and husband Kevin Kwan Loucks, piano. Iryna performed an incredible virtuosity on her 250 year old Stradivari which was made before Beethoven was born. Makha Bucha Day THE BUDDHIST NATIONAL HOLIDAY IN THAILAND.
M
akha Bucha or Magha Puja is a holiday of the Thai Theravada - Buddhists. The day commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 students of
the Buddha, who had come together to the Buddha to hear preach. This day always falls on the full moon day of the third lunar month in the traditional Thai calendar (late February or early March), each year on a different date instead. The name is composed of Makha ( Name of the third lunar month) and Bucharest (Puja: worship) Makha Bucha is therefore a day worship of the Buddha and his teachings on the full moon day of the third month. The origin of the festival goes back to a spontaneous gathering of 1,250 monks. They had all decided independently of each other to visit the Buddha, who at that time was in the bamboo grove, Weluwan Forest near Rājagṛha in the historic kingdom of Magadha . Of the 1,250 monks 1,000 were “ Enlightened “ and which had previously been ordained by the Buddha himself. The other 250 were disciples of the elders Moggallana and Sariputta, the legend goes. According to legend, Buddha announced his death, that he would die within three months, the last year of his life at the full moon day of Makha.

It is not clear when the Makha Bucha-holiday was celebrated for the first time. In a list of the religious ceremonies within a year, by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), it is mentioned that his father King Mongkut (Rama IV) in the wake of the founding, ordered a ceremony to Makha -Bucha Day at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram (now Wat Phra Kaeo ). The holiday was probably celebrated in 1851 for the first time, it was then in the kingdomof Thailand recognized as a public religious holiday.
Facts on Buddhism Most historians agree that Buddhism originated in nor thern India in the 5th century B.C.E. The tradition traces its origin to Siddhartha Gautama (or Gotama), who is typically referred to as the Buddha (literally the “Awakened” or “Enlightened One”). Siddhartha observed the suffering in the world and set out to find an antidote. Through meditation and analysis, he attained an enlightened state of being that marked the end of attachments and therefore suffering, ultimately, upon his death, release from the cycle of rebir th (samsara).

The Buddha’s teachings are often summarized in the Four Noble Truths, which form the basis of the first sermon he delivered after attaining enlightenment and the Eightfold Path, which provides a basic guide for how to live in the world. Over the course of its 2500-year history, Buddhism has experienced many schisms and modifications; there are currently three major branches of the tradition — the Theravada (“Doctrine of the Elders”), the Mahayana (“Great Vehicle), and the Vajrayana (“Diamond Vehicle,” often simply called “Tibetan Buddhism”).
Buddhism has spread from its roots in India to vir tually every corner of the world, and in each place it has spread it has adopted and adapted local practices and beliefs. Although Buddhism is a distinct religious tradition, many people in the contemporary West have adopted philosophical and practical aspects of Buddhism and incorporated them into their religious and social practices; thus there are people who identify themselves “Buddhist Christians,” “Buddhist Jews,” and “Buddhist Atheists.”
Although there are many sects and groups within each of these branches, the Buddhist canon consists of a vast corpus of texts that cover philosophical, devotional, and monastic matters, and each of the major divisions of Buddhism has its own distinct version of what it considers to be canonical scriptures.

World Drummer par Excellence DANIEL HUMAIR IS COMING TO BANGKOK IN FEBRUARY.

In 1987, he was awarded the “Grand Prix du Jazz SACEM (France’s music publishing organization) and in 1988 he received the highest jazz honours awarded annually by the French recording academy (Charlie Parker award) and the Académie Charles Cros (Prix in Honorem, the equivalent of the Grammy). Winning both in one year was unprecedented. Elected European Jazz musician of the year 1997 by the “Académie du Jazz” in France.
n close cooperation with the Mahidol University, Daniel Humair, Jazz drummer par excellence was invited to attend a Jazz Conference at the Mahidol University, doing a workshop
on the 31st of January, but most impor tantly giving us an exhibition of his superior talent and virtuosity with appearances with Koh. Mr. Saxman and the Sound of Siam Quartet on February 1st and as a guest star that same date at the Mahidol University. Drummers have always played a major role in Jazz Music, even if they were always though off as accompanying instruments. However, with traditional and classical Jazz end 50´s, Jazz drummers, mainly in the 60´s, have established themselves as main performers, soloists and bandleaders. Jazz drummers pioneers such as Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Kenny Clarke, Ar t Blakey and later Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes, Jack deJohnette, Paul Motian, Tony WIlliams, Billy Cobham, Peter Erskine, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Dannie Richmond, Steve Smith have established themselves as main representatives of their trade. Daniel Humair, Swiss born deserves to be mentioned as one of the world best drummers ever and can be mentioned with above stars in a single breath. Daniel played with celebrities such as Stephane Grapelli and Eric Dolphy among other before having his own ensemble. Daniel´s compacted Biography starts in Switzerland where he was born on May 23. 1938. His more than 4 decades of contributions to improvised music were recognised officially in 1986 when he was named Dean of Europe´s modern Jazz drummers. APPR OACH M AGAZINE
Daniel Humair began playing drums when he was seven und turned professional in 1955. He played with most of the Jazz greats in his long career with only Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis missing who had their own bands. He was named Drummer Deserving Wider Recognition in 1970 Down Beat International Critics Poll. He toured Asia and the Middle east under the auspices of the French government and formed in 1984 a Trio with Joachim Kühn and Jean-François Jenny Clark. 12

MUSIC Whilst the trio he formed in 1984 with German pianist Joachim Kühn and French bassist Jean-François Jenny Clark, Humair is the drummer’s main musical interest and challenge at this writing, he continues to lead various “Special Occasion” Ensemble of his own (featuring John Scofield, Bob Berg, David Friedman or Larry Schneider as guest soloists) and still collaborates occasionally with long-time associates Solal and Michel Por tal.
Abstract Paintings by Daniel Humair Daniel Humair has been invited to play in almost all of the major international Jazz Festivals such as Newpor t, Monterey, New York, Milano, Barcelona,. Antibes, Nice, Montreux, Paris, Berlin, Chicago, Vienne, Marciac and recently on the Jarasum Jazz Festival in South Korea in 2012. with the Daniel Humair Quartet New Reunion and Émile Parisien, Jérôme Regard and Vincent Peirani just to mention a few. His recording career now consists of around 200 albums, as a sideman, some of which have been award winning, and over 16 albums in his name.
Parallel to his musical career, Daniel Humair is a professional painter working mainly with acrylic paint on paper since 1962. His abstract work is included in the permanent collections of the City of Paris, the Swiss Government and several public collections in Europe.

FEBRUARY In February, a 10-ton meteor, packing the power of an atomic bomb, exploded over Russia’s Ural Mountains. The resulting sonic blast shattered windows in the town of Chelyabinsk, damaging 3,000 buildings and injuring 1,100 unsuspecting residents.
In January, cyclist Lance Armstrong confessed after years of denial that he had used performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France again and again. Armstrong blamed what he called his “win at all cost” attitude.
MARCH March saw white smoke at the Vatican -- and word of the election of a new pope for the world’s Roman Catholics. Jorge Bergoglio, from Argentina, became Pope Francis I. His election followed the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI for health reasons.
APRIL On April 15th, two crude bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, ripping through the crowd of runners and spectators. Three people were killed, more than 260 were injured.

MAY In May, actress Angelina Jolie revealed that she had chosen to have a double mastectomy, after learning that she carried a gene mutation greatly increasing her risk of breast cancer.

JUNE In June, Edward Snowden sent shock waves around the world by leaking thousands of classified U.S. documents he had access to while working at the National Security Agency. The documents exposed an unprecedented program of surveillance of Americans and U.S. allies abroad. Snowden was later granted temporary asylum in Russia.
JULY
In July, it was a boy for Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Prince George Alexander Louis is third in line to the British throne.
SEPTEMBER In September, a small band of Islamic extremists opened fire at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya. Seventy-two people were killed and more than 200 were injured.
AUGUST August brought grim images from the civil war in Syria. The government of Bashir al-Assad was accused of using chemical weapons against its own people in Damascus, killing more than 1,400 men, women and children. The images stirred outrage around the world and led to Syria’s agreeing to U.N. supervision of its chemical weapons stock.
NOVEMBER In November, Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, agreed to curtail the country’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting economic sanctions, raising hopes for a new era of cooperation with Iran.
OCTOBER In October, the US’ federal government’s health insurance website was launched -- though just barely -- in October. The computer system promptly collapsed. It took until just a few days ago to get most of the kinks worked out.

In December, the US Federal Reserve Board announced that it will start to cut back on buying Treasury bonds because the economy is getting stronger on its own. At the same time, the stock market soared to record heights, up 25 percent for the year.

Phuket Phuket formerly known as Thalang is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand and located in the Andaman Sea. Neighbouring provinces are (from north clockwise) Phang Nga and Krabi, but as Phuket is an island it has no land boundaries. The island Phuket, which is somewhat smaller than the size of Singapore, is Thailand’s largest island. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by two bridges. Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoys a rich and colorful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign ship logs of Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traders.The region now derives much of its income from tourism. One of the most popular (and overcrowded) tourist areas on Phuket is Patong Beach on the central western coast, perhaps owing to the easy access to its wide and long beach. Most of Phuket›s nightlife and its cheap shopping is located in Patong, and the area has become increasingly developed. There are several coral islands to the south of Phuket, the Similan Islands lie to the North West, and Phi Phi Islands to the south east. Koh Samui Koh Samui, is an island off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand. It is located close to the mainland town of Surat Thani in Surat Thani Province. Ko Samui is Thailand’s secondlargest island after Phuket, with an area of 228.7 km2, a population of over 63,000. Until the late 20th century, Ko Samui was an isolated selfsufficient community, having little connection with the mainland of Thailand. The island was even without roads until the early 1970s, and the 15 km journey from one side of the island to the other could involve a whole-day trek through the mountainous central jungles. An island of great natural beauty and variety, Samui has a palm-fringed shoreline and coconut and fruit cultivation of the coastal lowlands rise to a central granite massive, the slopes of which are cloaked in virgin rainforest. Even though the best time year of the year to dive in the Ko Samui is between June and August, it is still perfectly possible to dive virtually all year round.

The city is sometimes called “Venice of the East”. The sixteenth century witnessed the rise of Burma which, under an aggressive dynasty, had overrun Chiang Mai and Laos and made war on the Thai. In 1569 Burmese forces joined by Thai rebels, mostly royal family members of Siam, captured the city of Ayutthaya and carried off the whole royal family to Burma. Dhammaraja (1569–90), a Thai governor who had aided the Burmese, was installed as vassal king at Ayutthaya. Thai independence was restored by his son, King Naresuan (1590–1605), who turned on the Burmese and by 1600 had driven them from the country. Determined to prevent another treason like his father’s, Naresuan set about unifying the country’s administration directly under the royal court at Ayutthaya. He ended the practice of nominating royal princes to govern Ayutthaya’s provinces, assigning instead court officials who were expected to execute policies handed down by the king. Thereafter royal princes were confined to the capital. Their power struggles continued, but at court under the king’s watchful eye. In order to ensure his control over the new class of governors, Naresuan decreed that all freemen subject to phrai service had become phrai luang, bound directly to the king, who distributed the use of their services to his officials. This measure gave the king a theoretical monopoly on all manpower, and the idea developed that since the king owned the services of all the people, he also possessed all the land. Ministerial offices and governorships—-and the Sakdina that went with them—-were usually inherited positions dominated by a few families often connected to the king by marriage. Indeed, marriage was frequently used by Thai kings to cement alliances between themselves and powerful families, a custom prevailing through the nineteenth century. APPR OACH M AGAZINE

BOUGAINVILLEA GLABRA (PAPER FLOWER)

he Bougainvillea, also known as Bougainville, is a genus which belongs to the family of the miracle flower plants (Nyctaginaceae). There are about 18 different species. The Bougainvillea species
originally come from South America.The varieties thrive now in the meantime in all subtropical regions to the southern Mediterranean. The genus name honors the French navigator and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville, after him also the island of Bougainville is named. Bougainvillea species are woody plants, rarely climbing plants, usually shrubs or small trees. The shoot axes can be hairless or hairy and often studded with spines. The alternately arranged, stalked leaves are simple ovate to ellipticlanceolate with leaf blade. Stipules are absent. Based on their colorful bracts and the ability to cover walls and fences, they are often used as ornamental plants.The cultured species include Bougainvillea glabra and Bougainvillea spectabilis. Bougainvillea grows quite fast. With good care, meter long tendrils develop. In this way, one can let the Bougainvillea grow over different fronts, like walls and pergolas. The colored bracts are sensitive to heavy rain or other mechanical stress, if so, they fall off. Bougainvillea does not require an excessive amount of water. If the root ball is kept slightly moist, you can experience a rich bloom along the developing colored bracts. Water logging or permanently wet substrate, however, leads much stronger to rotting of the roots and thus death of the plant than to other sensitive plants. With a little luck you can bring back such plants to life, if the plant pot at least still has a low residual moisture. But most often then aboveground plant parts are dead. Light - The site should be selected as sunny as possible, only then the Bougainvillea flowers in a satisfactory manner. Temperature - Bougainvillea is not only a sun-seeking but also extremely heatloving plant. This is why a house wall in south direction is the ideal location. The masonry on the one hand reflects the infrared radiation from the sun during the day and warm at night. To achieve a rich bloom this is essential. Fertilizer - Once every one or two weeks with a universal or specific flowering fertilizer. Propagation - Almost always by cuttings. It is best to cut from the vines, about 30 cm long cuttings and root them immediately. Rooting usually takes several months.

Thailand The Bangkok-based protests, which began months ago, have also increased the prospect of a wider clash that could affect other economies in Southeast Asia. Thailand’s benchmark stock index has plunged more than 12% over the past month. The Thai baht has plummeted to multiyear lows, dropping almost 6% against the U.S. dollar since the start of November. Exports have contracted, and the tourism industry -- which contributes about 7% or roughly $25 billion of the country’s GDP -- is starting to take a hit. Other observers, including the Bank of Thailand, have dropped their economic growth forecasts. The central bank also cut rates at its November monetary policy meeting in a move to support growth.

Flush with liquidity, markets around the world surged last year, breaking records and pumping out healthy returns. So is there anything left for investors in 2014?
The flow of cheap money will lessen, say experts. But don’t despair. While that will stir up risk in some regions, it will also present opportunities. At the same time, corporate earnings will take center stage as stock markets are weaned off massive amounts of stimulus. “Prospects are much more dependent upon near-term earnings growth,” said John Wyn-Evans, head of investment strategy at Investec Wealth & Investment. Strategists say developed markets hold better return potential than their emerging peers, as the U.S. Federal Reserve pulls back its support. Slowing growth in China is another challenge that could sap confidence and hurt equities in the year ahead.
Europe The fragile European recovery, frustrated by subdued global growth and a relatively strong euro, continues to cast a pall over the region. However, things are moving in the right direction. A record-breaking run for Germany’s blue-chip DAX index led a string of market rallies in Europe in 2013. Growth in the U.K. was reignited and London stocks marched higher in tandem. Looking ahead, analysts are selectively optimistic about European equities. Analysts at Threadneedle Investments in London say improved economic fundamentals should translate into steady, rather than dramatic, earnings growth.

Asia And stock pickers see more upside on the horizon. Major economic reform has helped drive the outsized gains. The stimulating effect of Abenomics is expected to keep stocks buoyed in the year ahead. Analysts at Nomura, Threadneedle Investments and Wells Fargo all expect Japanese equities to climb higher in 2014.
This year could be another big one for Japan. The benchmark Nikkei index surged nearly 60% in 2013, sealing its best annual performance in more than 40 years.
Elsewhere in Asia, a pick-up in global demand is likely to support many export-focused Asian economies. Improved confidence may spread to equities but the region faces two key headwinds: slowing growth in China and rising interest rates. Thailand is causing growing concerns about their economy and Thai Baht currency strength.
Abenomics Abenomics is the name given to a suite of measures introduced by Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe after his December 2012 re-election to the post he last held in 2007. His aim was to revive the sluggish economy with “three arrows”: a massive fiscal stimulus, more aggressive monetary easing from the Bank of Japan, and structural reforms to boost Japan’s competitiveness.

By the end of February the measures had resulted in a dramatic weakening of the yen and a 22 per cent rise in the Topix stock market index since his election win. Japan’s central bank had also yielded to pressure from Mr Abe’s administration to set an inflation target of 2 per cent.
Draghinomics The persistency of Mario Draghi, European Central Bank President, refusing to accept a division of the Eurozone may gave saved the Eurozone and Euro currency. Economic recovering of Greece, Ireland and Spain show growth in their economies. Against a backdrop of weak inflation and anemic growth, most analysts expect the ECB to keep interest rates at very low levels for some time to come, or even ease policy further. Recent data put annual inflation in the euro zone at 0.9% in November, slightly higher than October. Major central banks aim for low inflation but nevertheless want a cushion above zero.
When inflation gets too low, or if consumer prices fall on a sustained basis, business profits tend to weaken and consumers may delay spending plans. “We are very aware of the downside risks that a protracted period of low inflation for an extended period of time does imply,” Mr. Draghi said. Economists say that one way to reverse this trend could be for the ECB to inject more funds into the banking system via another longer-term loan to banks. The ECB pumped more than €1 trillion ($1.36 trillion) of three-year loans into the euro zone’s banking system about two years ago.

Thai Permanent Residency
A
lot of people want to stay permanently in Thailand as it is one of the most sought-after destinations in South East Asia offering a low yet convenient standard of living. There are a lot of inquiries from foreigners who are constantly on a trip to the Land of Smiles as to how they can apply for Thai Permanent Resident status. Obtaining status as a Permanent Resident (PR) in Thailand has many advantages. It allows you to live permanently in Thailand, with no requirement to apply for an extension of stay. You can also have your name on a house registration document, and you will be able to buy a condominium without making a bank transfer from abroad. Getting a work permit is also made easier once you have PR status. In addition to this, you can be eligible to become a director of a Thai public company, as well as eventually apply to become a naturalized Thai citizen. You will also be able apply for an extension of stay and Permanent Resident status for your nonThai family members. All applications for Thai Permanent Residency are processed by the Royal Thai Immigration Commission. The annual quota for granting permanent residency in Thailand is a maximum of 100 persons per country. The application period for Thai PR usually from October to the end of December of every year. In order to apply to become a Thai Permanent Resident, you must meet the following criteria: • You must have had a Thai non-immigrant visa for at least three years prior to the submission of your application. Holders of multiple NON-Immigrant visas can not apply.
You must have 3 consecutive yearly extensions in order to qualify. • You must be a holder of a non-immigrant visa at the time of submitting your application. You must be able to meet one of these categories to apply for PR status in Thailand: • Investment category (minimum 3 – 10 Mil. Baht investment in Thailand) - Working/ Business category • Support a family or Humanitarian Reasons category: In this category, you must have a relationship with a Thai citizen or an alien who already posses a residence permit as a husband or wife; father or mother; or a guardian of a Thai child under 20 years of age. Expert / academic category & Other categories as determined by Thai Immigration You should note that the list of required documents for the application depends on the category under which the application is made. Once your application for Thai Permanent Residency is approved, a residence blue book is issued to you. You must then register your place of residence in Thailand at the local Amphur and obtain a house card. A week after the receipt of your residence certificate you can then apply for an alien book (red book) at the local police station, which is the equivalent of the Thai national ID card. You must re-register there every year. The Residency Permit itself never expires, unless revoked.To be able to leave the country and return to Thailand, however, requires you to apply for a re-entry permit (endorsement). You can file an application to become a Thai naturalized citizen after holding Permanent Resident status in Thailand for 10 consecutive years.

According to John, Stan´s sonin-law, “There is no doubt in my mind that cannabis pulled my father-in-law out of the wasting stages of cancer and enabled him to gain strength and in turn fight this horrible cell malfunction with success.
Lauric acid has been called a “miracle” ingredient due to its health promoting capabilities and is present in a mother’s milk. In fact, it can be found in only three dietary sources—small amounts in butterfat and larger amounts in palm kernel and coconut oil. In the body, lauric acid is converted to monolaurin, which is a potent antiviral, antibacterial and antiprotozoal substance. Because monolaurin is a monoglyceride, it can destroy lipid-coated viruses including measles, influenza,

Is Modern Wheat Healthy? Modern wheat is making you fat and sick.

ur Hunter Gatherer Ancestors collected all they could from the ground for food including insects, berries, nuts, etc. In their gathering, they found that the
animals were eating grass, and they became curious. They broke it down and somehow incorporated wild wheat into their diet. This grass was called Einkorn and had only 14 chromosomes.
The makers of Clearfield wheat claim that their wheat is a result of “enhanced, traditional plant breeding techniques,” making a distinction between genetically modified wheat. However, although no gene splicing techniques were used, many other methods were, such as the purposeful induction of mutations using chemicals, high dose x-ray and radiation techniques to induce mutations coupled with cross breeding. These methods are far worse than genetic modification, according to Dr. William Davis, author of the book Wheat Belly.
However, this is not the wheat of today, that is for sure. In the Middle Ages bread was a staple and very common food. In 1960, when the threat of world population explosion was imminent, there was an investment made in agricultural research where lots of money and time were devoted to new ways to increase wheat yield. At this time, different strains of wheat were crossed over and over again to select certain characteristics and to introduce unique genes. The resulting wheat yielded up to 10 times more per acre. When this wheat was introduced to many third world countries, famine was greatly reduced within one year. Dr. Norman Borlaug received the Nobel Peace prize for his work creating this high yield strain of wheat.
The government says eat more wheat – what is up with that? The government tells us that we need to eat more grain, meaning more wheat. Over 90% of all grain consumed is wheat. In the food pyramid, we are advised to eat 60% of calories from wheat. The new food plate design also tells us to get at least 1/4 of our calories from wheat. Here is why we need to stop listening to what our government is telling us about the food pyramid:
Because this wheat is so prolific, it has taken over almost all of the world’s wheat supply.There are also about a million acres of what is known as Clearfield Wheat being grown in the Pacific Northwest. It is a semi dwarf strain of wheat that has had its seed and embryos exposed to a chemical, sodium azide, which is an industrial toxin. In fact, in the few cases of human ingestion, the Poison Control Center has warned people not to offer CPR because the person offering the CPR may also ingest the chemical and die. Modern Wheat is an Appetite Stimulant It is estimated that up to 10% of the population has a sensitivity to the protein in wheat known as gluten (some estimate it may be higher, closer to 30%). However, the other 90% of people who consume wheat really should not be eating it either. Here are a few reasons why: 44

HEALTH & WELLNESS Gluten is a two part protein that is comprised of gliadin plus glutenin. Glutenin has a unique elasticity that gives us the ability to stretch our pizza or bread dough or even spin it over our heads, if we are inclined to do so. Gliadin, the other part of the gluten protein, was heavily studied in the 1970’s by psychiatrists who found that if they took all of the wheat out of the diet of their patients with schizophrenia, they improved markedly. When they put the wheat back, they found that the condition worsened. So the question asked was what was in bread that led schizophrenics to hallucinate? It was traced back to the gliadin protein which, when ingested, enters the brain and binds to opiate receptors where it stimulates appetite. In addition, gliadin, acting like an opiate in the brain, has other disastrous effects. For example, people with ADHD become hypersensitive and have behavioral outbursts, people with schizophrenia have major hallucinations, people who are bipolar become increasingly manic and those with eating disorders, such as binge eating, will develop food obsessions. By 1985, everything at the supermarket with wheat in it came from the prolific semi-dwarf strain or a spinoff. Interestingly enough, if you compare what happened to America’s weight prior to and after 1985 it is evident that there was an obesity explosion that is still happening today shortly after the “new” wheat was introduced. A huge increase in the number of diabetics also followed. Although cause and effect cannot be proven scientifically – it seems evident that we have all been fed an appetite stimulant.

Modern Wheat Raises Blood Sugar Two slices of whole wheat bread raise blood sugar higher than 6 teaspoons of table sugar. How does this happen when whole wheat is considered a complex carbohydrate that we are encouraged to eat more of? The complex carbohydrate of wheat is called Amylopectin A, which is highly sensitive to amylase, which we have in our stomach and mouth. This makes it very easy to digest and raises blood sugar rapidly. Wheat for breakfast, wheat for lunch and wheat for snacks results in visceral fat that encircles the intestines, heart, liver and kidneys. Repetitive high blood sugar results in what Dr. Davis calls a “wheat belly.”
What About Gluten-Free? Although going gluten free is a good thing because you avoid problems with gluten and gliadin, wheat germ agglutinin and amylopectin A, gluten-free foods contain other things, mainly potato starch, rice starch, tapioca starch and corn starch. These are the only foods that raise blood sugar higher than the amylopectin A found in wheat.
What Happens When We Remove Wheat From Our Diet? First of all, taking wheat out of the diet is not as easy as might think – it is in a lot of foods – even ones we would not associate with having wheat. For example, wheat is in Twizzlers, Campbells Tomato Soup, taco seasoning, frozen dinners, cereals, salad dressings, granola bars and a lot more.
What Can I Eat? Eat real, single ingredient foods as much as possible. You can eat nuts, healthy fat, organic fruits/vegetables, grass-fed beef, organic chicken and turkey, wild caught salmon, cheese, organic eggs, coconuts, avocados, flaxseeds, olive and hemp oils as well as a variety of other foods that are in their natural state. The more refined a food is, the more likely it contains wheat and other byproducts of the refinement process that are just too dangerous to your health.
Why is there wheat in so many products? Dr. Davis tells us that taking wheat out of the diet will result in the following: Dramatic weight loss - Reduced appetite -Lowered blood sugar - Reduced joint pain - Reduced inflammation APPR OACH M AGAZINE

Golf with Tom GOLF IN HUA HIN – HOT AND HAPPENING

ell golf in Hua Hin is hot and happening. As this article goes to the publisher they will be teeing it up for the King’s Cup Golf Hua Hin at Black Mountain as featured in last month’s Approach. It will be the last stop on the Asian Tour for the 2013 season. Qualifying for the 2014 Asian Tour Season will start here on January 29th and run through February 15th and there is no better way to enjoy world class professional competition up close and very personal. These guys aren’t just playing a competition they will be playing for the ability to pursue their dreams for the next 12 months and maybe for the rest of their adult lives. This truly is one of the world’s most diverse competitions with competitors from every corner of the globe as this quote from the Tour’s website shows: “For the First Stage, Japan has the number highest of participants with a total of 94 entries followed by Australia (82), Korea (82), the United States (63), England (41), Thailand (40) and Chinese Taipei (37). Sweden (19), Singapore (11), Canada (11), Spain (10), the Philippines (10), France (10), Malaysia (10), Finland (8) and New Zealand (8) will also be represented at the Qualifying School. The Qualifying School has also received entries from China, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Scotland, India, Ireland, South Africa, Hong Kong, Norway, Portugal, Brunei Darussalam, Kenya, Monaco, Pakistan, Switzerland, Venezuela and Wales. “ . With the sheer numbers of over 700 competitors representing more than 30 nations it could overwhelm many small towns but Hua Hin with nearly 100 hotels and eight golf courses will easily accommodate them and their entourages. Imperial Lakeview and Springfield will be used for all three stages, the Army Course at Suan Son Pradipat will be used for only the first two stages before the finals from Febuary 12-15th.

Now the critical part, after your 10-15 putts take your hand out of your pocket and place it on the grip and/or your right hand but do not remove your right hand and fingers from the grip. You can overlap one, two, three, four or all five (I do five) fingers onto your right hand. The left hand is only there for a counter balance and should not effect the feel of the putter in your hand. Immediately go back and putt another ten balls from five feet using both hands and I think you will really see how the left hand has zero effect controlling the putter. I know that this is a bit like work and we want to have nothing but fun with golf and now is the time to go out and have fun knocking putts all over the green, 50 footers will show you how much more accurate you will be with this method. Talk to the many PGA pros we have here to dial in the best way to incorporate the overlap of the left hand onto the right if you have any questions about that aspect of this.
How about a golf lesson? Putting? It’s rather difficult to give a lesson on putting let alone doing it in writing but I’ll give it a go. Actually I’ll make it easy on myself and use Greg Norman. Norman was asked what was the best putting lesson he received and he said he never really got one. Sort of along the Harvey Penick school of learning golf. Get some balls and a club and go at it and practice. There have been hundreds of lessons and ways to try to get people to learn how to put the ball in the cup and most of them are somewhat valid but I think there is only one thing that is critical for nearly everybody and Norman surely did it.You must let your dominant hand control your magic wand of a putter (or maybe it will become magic if you let your dominant hand control the stick). For you right handers this will be the your right hand.
In the mid 80’s I built what I believe was one of the first if not the first over-size putter grip ( I am now using one of Mick Wittering and John Daly’s “Loudmouth” over-size grips, Mick feels the “loudmouth” moniker suits me fine). I fashioned it after the size of a pool cue as I was looking to try to take the hands and wrists out of the putting stroke. Everyone around the world that I showed it to agreed that it completely silenced the hands and allowed you to stroke the ball using the traditional pendulum action of allowing the shoulders to control the action of the swinging of the putter. This grip made it much more obvious how the right hand stabilized the putter and the shoulders controlled the swing. Even with that said, once you know how to feel the stabilizing control of your dominant hand on your putter, it doesn’t matter how you swing the club (hinging the wrists as some do instead of swinging the shoulders), you are going to putt more consistently and maybe need to bring up visions of Chi Chi Rodriquez attacking the hole with his putter as if it was a sword to make sure his long putt that settled into the bottom of the cup didn’t jump out and attempt to slay him. The “Reverse Overlap” is the traditional grip for putting and it really allows you to feel your dominant hand controlling the putter but at this point who really cares as I don’t even want you to use two hands when putting, at least for now. Get a half a dozen golf balls and stand five feet from the hole and put the putter in your right hand and then place your left hand in your left front pocket or rest it on your left hip if you don’t have a pocket. Now putt about 10-15 putts to the hole using only your right hand and feel how your dominant hand controls the putter. I equate the feeling to how your right hand controls a pool stick or feel as if your are using a sword, feel as if you are signing your name with a big pen or painting a masterpiece with a fine brush. Your left hand has nothing to do with it, it is all controlled by the right hand.

The story is beautiful and the least ‘heavy’ of Sparks’ novels. The book is written through a structure that will keep you guessing. The Choice is entirely different from The Wedding and is told from a third-person point of view. Travis Parker is a happy, satisfied bachelor, until Gabby moves in next door. Despite Gabby’s determination to despise him and her long term boyfriend that she believes she will marry, Travis continues to force his way into Gabby’s life setting them both on paths they never imagined they would travel. At the heart of the book, the ultimate question is, how far should a person go in the name of true love? Of the films, even though Message in a Bottle and Nights in Rodanthe are tragedies and not quite to my personal taste, they are still great films. The rest have bittersweet endings and the only film I didn’t enjoy was Dear John which felt as if it dragged just a little too much before reaching a more bitter than sweet ending. Teens will love A Walk to Remember and The Last Song, starring teenaged characters. The Notebook is a beautiful period classic albeit 2 hours long. And Safe Haven has a dangerous mystery behind it keeping the suspense wound tight and is very gripping.

What is Aflatoun and where does it come from?

Jeroo, now a globally recognized social entrepreneur, used her Skoll Foundation Award to bring social and financial education to the world. To test whether the programme would work outside India, organisations in ten countries launched the programme. Once the Aflatoun programme model was developed, a Campaign for Social and Financial Education was launched in March 2008 by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands.
The name derives from India, where children named it after a funloving, good-hearted and slightly mischievous Bollywood movie character. Aflatoun is also the Arabic name for Plato, the Greek philosopher who promoted an idealistic notion of citizenship. Both seemed a fitting influence, so the name stuck.
The campaign’s ambitious goals were to reach one million children in 75 countries within three years and these targets were exceeded. In 2011, Aflatoun broadened its curriculum offering by providing a programme for youth called Aflateen. It also announced that its new strategic targets would be 10 million children reached by 2015.

• 500g organic free-range chicken wings • 2 fresh organic limes • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and left whole • Sea Salt and Black Pepper • Organic extra-virgin olive oil
Method:
Easy Chicken Dinners Tip: Use organic ingredients, free-range eggs and sea salt where possible as it is tastier, better for our health and the earth. Each ingredient that I have labelled organic has previously been found in Hua Hin as organic. Biodynamic, unsprayed, chemical-free and wild-crafted, are also good choices. This month I will show you three ways to cook chicken fillets, drumettes and wings with vegetables for a healthy and easy home-cooked meal to serve 4 people. Enjoy!
Preheat the oven to 160 Degrees C. Line a baking dish with baking paper. Rinse and drain the chicken wings and lay in dish. Pour a drizzle of olive oil over them, add sea salt and pepper to your liking and rub seasoning into chicken. Pour on freshly squeezed lime juice and throw some lime rind and garlic into the dish for aromatic flavouring. Bake for an hour until the meat is cooked through and the chicken is golden on top.
PAPRIKA CHICKEN Challenge Rate: 3/5
Ingredients:
• 3 tbsp. ground paprika • Sea Salt and Black Pepper • Organic extra-virgin olive oil • Rice Bran oil • 500g organic free-range chicken fillets • ½ cup organic unbleached flour
HONEY AND SOY CHICKEN Challenge Rate: 1/5
Method:
Ingredients:
Rinse and drain chicken fillets and place on a plate. Pour a light drizzle of olive oil and sprinkle of sea salt over them then rub into chicken. In a bowl combine flour, paprika, salt and pepper. Heat a fry pan on the stove, grease with rice bran oil. Cover each piece of chicken in the flour mix and then fry the fillets on the pan, on each side until white, crispy and cooked through. Sprinkle any remaining flour onto the chicken, into the pan whilst cooking. Optional Step: Instead of using olive oil you may rub the chicken fillets in an egg mix with salt and black pepper before coating them in flour, if you feel the chicken needs the egg for the flour to stick.

Shen-nong and the
Camellia Tree by Zara Adcock
S
hen-nong hauled firewood to a small clearing in the deep green mountain’s side and worked on setting it alight to boil his pot of water. The practice was a simple meditation accompanied by the distant trickling stream, the birds hopping from branch to branch, and life’s very essence abuzz in the plants. Once satisfied with his fire, Shen-nong leaned against the forked trunk of the close by Camellia tree and quickly dozed off.While he dreamed he was a bird soaring over the mountain range, a breeze swept through the clearing, tugging leaves from the Camellia tree and carrying them in the air. The breeze faltered and the leaves fluttered into Shen-nong’s pot of boiling water. Shen-nong awoke to an unfamiliar scent and ambled over to his pot. He noticed the leaves and sniffed the enticing aroma. He decided he would try the fragrant water and dipped his cup into the pot. He sipped it. It was delicious. Shen-nong’s inner knowings assured him it was not poison. And so he drank some more, and more, until the cup was empty. The drowsiness he had felt from setting up his little camp left him. The special water was prompting his body back to life and so Shen-nong asked the tree if he could take some leaves on his way. The tree rustled gently and Shen-nong thanked it with deep gratitude, pocketing a handful of leaves. Note: This tale is based on one of the legends of how Shen-nong, the Divine farmer and legendary originator of Chinese herbal medicine, discovered the Camellia Sinensis tree.
