I

t has been the hottest season in Thailand in 80 years. April is typically hot and sweaty, but this year's scorching weather has set a record for the longest heat wave in at least 65 years. The average peak temperature each day this month has been above 40 degrees Celsius, with the mercury spiking one day to 44.3 degrees Celsius. 1960 was the last time the weather was this hot." That was the year Thailand began keeping national weather records. Tigers in the zoo are getting meat popsicles. Deer, giraffes and elephants get increased shade and sprinklers to provide rain and decrease the heat on the ground." Why not provide air-conditioned quarters? Anyway relief is forecasted for this month with scattered tropical storms when the monsoon rains are expected. On April 27, in 1960, Thailand posted its hottest day ever recorded with 44.5 degrees Celsius (in the shade) in Uttaradit, North Middle Thailand, neighbouring Laos. I was asked what the best place for a cool Thailand would be during this time…no doubt...drive up the Doi Inthanon mountain outside Chiang Mai, settle down at 2,500 meters, book a room at Touch Stars Resort and enjoy mild days and cool evenings and try a Khao Soi, Chian Mai´s signature dish. Hua Hin steadily growing further however. True Arena seriously developing Tennis sport in Thailand as fixed dates for ATT tournaments are being announced. Tennis folks in Hua Hin can socialize at True Arena on Friday early evenings from 6pm to 8 pm and play doubles. Furthermore you can buy a Tennis membership at 5,000 Baht and pay a fee for an hour of athletic swing whilst enjoying a cold beer and some dinner at Maria restaurant after the game. We would appreciate some feedback from readers on the contents of our magazine and suggestions to make it more interesting. Please write to editorapproach@gmail.com.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Travelling in Thailand TRAVEL TIPS FOR YOUR TRIP THROUGH THAILAND

T

hailand isn’t easily summarized. You can have wildly different experiences there.

offers its visitors fine beaches, stunning island life, incredible reefs, nice food and fascinating culture under a warm tropical climate.

The country is constantly changing and different parts of Thailand cater to different crowds—from wide-eyed backpackers on a big adventure, to package tourists on a lazy holiday.

Due to its popularity, destinations in Thailand can sometimes be a bit packed with tourists, such as in Phuket for example, so it is not really the ideal place if you’re avoiding the hoards of tourists. However there are still many fine deserted islands and very nice places if you wish to discover them. Thailand offers a wide range of accommodation for all styles. You can find budget hostels, basic guesthouses and backpacker style beach bungalows. It will cost you about 100-500 baht per room per night depending on the location and season and even less in a dorm room.

Thailand rose to fame as a backpacking destination, but today it is mainly about mass tourism. Thailand is among the top 10 most-visited countries in the world. If you’re looking for ‘hidden gems’, there are very few left. But if you’re looking for something fun and reliable (but also maybe a little crazy), then that’s basically Thailand for you.

In the mid-range you can have a comfortable hotel for a very affordable price. It ranges from 500-1000 baht a night per person. Thailand has also superb high end resorts with private spas and luxury facilities. Thailand is a very safe country to travel in. Just be careful of pickpockets in big cities, scams and theft in night buses. Be also extra careful when driving a motorbike or a car as circulation can be erratic and road rules may not exist.

The country is really amazing and it is no wonder why it attracts so many travellers from all corners of the globe. A trip to Thailand 10

APPROACH June 2016

Flying is the easiest and fastest way to get there. Phuket and Krabi both have International airports but local airways fly to several province cities such as Chiang Mai and Udon Thani. The most well-known and reliable airlines within Thailand are Air Asia, Nok Airway, Kan Airways, Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND From Bangkok, there are daily buses leaving to all destinations countrywide. Journeys can be quite long, about 12 hours or more but generally cheaper than the plane. It may be better to take a night bus. As well as the bus, you also have daily trains leaving from Bangkok in all directions , even all the way to Singapore. The train can be a good local way of transportation and you will see super landscapes of lush tropical jungle during your trip. The cuisine, as you can imagine is largely focused around rice and curry combinations. The curries come in the form of either soups or fried curries (ones that have been reduced down and have less liquid in them. Don’t worry if you’re not good with spicy food because not all the curries are spicy and often contain copious amounts of delicious coconut milk. However the Thai cuisine differs from region to region. Many dishes that are now popular in Thailand were originally Chinese dishes. A proper Thai meal should consist of a soup, a curry dish with condiments, a dip with accompanying fish and vegetables. This would be followed by sweet desserts or fresh fruits such as mangoes, durian, jackfruit, papaya, grapes or melon.

Here are some Do´s and Don’ts tips: Shoes - Shoes should be removed

In general, a smile will you get you a long way, and people will tolerate most slip-ups from a foreigner.

The Wai - Thai's greet each other by pressing their palms together in a prayer-like gesture. A younger person will “Wai” the older person, who then returns it. However, an adult should not “Wai” a child. Thais will greatly appreciate it if you adopt this part of their culture during your time in Thailand.

Head & Feet - Feet are

considered the lowest part of the body by Thais, both physically and spiritually, and are therefore not to be used for anything other than walking on. They are definitely not to be pointed at anyone or used for pointing at anything. The head on the other hand is the highest part of the body. Don’t pat children on the head or touch someone on the head without their express permission. Putting both together, one of the worst things you can do in Thailand is to point your feet at someone’s head, even accidentally.

before entering a Thai person’s home. It is also quite common to remove shoes before entering some shops and offices. If there is a pile of shoes outside, that is a good sign that you are expected to remove your shoes before entering. In discussions with Thai people, avoid involving the monarchy or religion in a negative way. Be respectful to positive comments on the monarchy as deprecatory remarks regarding the monarchy are not tolerated and may be considered as Lesse Majeste which is punishable with hefty fines and/or jail sentences.

TIP - Last but not least, make sure

your VISA is valid for the time you want to spend in Thailand. Overstay is fined heavily and may even result in an exclusion of your next wanted visit to Thailand.

Enjoy your stay in the land of smiles – Amazing Thailand! For more information on Thailand contact : Tourist Authority of Thailand in Hua Hin – 39/4 Petschkasem Road. MUSIC

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life

PRINCE 1958 - 2016 Prince Rogers Nelson born in Minneapolis, USA in June 1958, was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. He was a musical innovator and known for his eclectic work his flamboyant stage presence, extravagant dress and makeup and wide vocal range. His music integrates a wide variety of styles, including funk, rock, R&B, new wave, soul, psychedelia, and pop and he used to play practically all the instruments himself when he recorded an album. Prince has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. Choosing the 10 best songs by the most ludicrously prolific – and riotously diverse – artist of the rock’n’roll era seems on the face to it to be flatly absurd. Where would you start? How could you possibly stop? Even the most demanding of selectors could compile a suite of 10 worldbeaters from Prince’s pre-fame dirty mac years alone, or from songs written by Prince and made famous by other artists – not only Nothing Compares 2 U but also the Bangles’ Manic Monday and Chaka Khan’s I Feel For You. 12

ane Elzabeth Key lives in Hua Hin and has dedicated her life to taking care of stray dogs. She, her husband Barry and a handfull of other wonderful volunteers run daily tours to rescue, treat and feed dogs that have no home and roam the streets of Hua Hin. Dogs often gather at temples where the Monks also feed the dogs. Once the dogs are at the temple, fed and watered Jane then goes searching for sick dogs and dogs for sterilsation in the nearby streets Everyday Barry feeds around 100 street dogs along a 5 km stretch of road on the way to Black Mountain in Hua Hin. All the dogs know him and wait for his motorbike. 16

in Khon Kaen are helping and have started to cooperate with Project Streetdogs. We also work closely with Rescue Paws and other individuals who try to help the dogs of Hua Hin. Not just for the dogs, but for the people. Happy healthy dogs are not a nuisance but a joy.

Disabled dogs who have been hurt in accidents are also difficult to deal with. They can´t be put back on the street. Another amazing organisation called Saved Souls with Gabriela Leonhard

By adopting a dog remotely, readers can contribute to the cost of caring for the dog. There are many dogs in Hua Hin who have no owners or parents to care for them. The courage and the never ending care for Hua Hin dogs has drawn our attention and admiration for Jane and others who are caring for these abandoned stray dogs.

Sick dogs are taken to Tan-Diau Pet hospital or Hua Hin Veterinary Hospital Klong Road where they are well looked after. We also catch all the females we can and have then sterilised at the clinic Jane continues to tell APPROACH that they make sure all the street dogs in their area are healthy and vaccinated. They are treated for mange and fleas, ticks and blood parasites.

The Mayor of Hua Hin was also made responsible for the shelter and it became a mosdel for the whole of Thailand.

Readers can help this organization by remote adopting dogs through a monthly donation or contribution. When you adopt a dog, you will be notified regulary on it´s condition and whereabouts. Two years ago Jane wrote to His Majesty The King about the Hua Hin dog shelter. The Palace immediately sent an inspector to inspect the shelter and His Majesty donated 10,000,000 Baht.

APPROACH is happy to publish a food review of their restaurant. At the Rocks Restaurant Exectutive Chef Mr. Chumpon Permtieng (Chef Ake) prepared a 5 course lunch. The first course was an interesting Angel Hair Pasta with Crabmeat, Crab Roe, White Wine, Olive Oil, Chili, Garlic and Rocket Leaves, served with a glass of sparkling wine to waken up our taste buds. Our friendly waitress Khun Uthai served us with grace and excellent trained service. The second course was a composition of Watermelon and Feta Cheese salad with pink pepper accompanied by a recommended classic Blanc de Blanc, restrained and elegant with a mouth-coating brioche richness and an intense expression of fruitiness. Altogether refreshing in preparation for their signature course, StirFried Rock Lobster with Garlic and Chili. The rock lobster was covered with sparkling fresh red, green and dark peppers in a delicious secret sauce. We remained with the French white wine. The main course was Oven Baked Chicken with hazelnuts, saffron cream honey sauce and served with gratinated potatoes. A glass of Rose de la Clape Classique Rose, Languedoc-Roussillon matched the excellent poultry perfectly. Our dessert consisted of Pavlova Merengue, named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. It is a meringue cake with a crisp crust and soft, light inside, topped with tropical fruit and whipped cream. Thai Chef ‌has got to be praised for this light but tasteful lunch selection. Together with the beach setting, this restaurant is highly recommendable. The prices are absolutely fair. The service impeccable and prompt. When you dine as an outside guest, you are automatically engaged in a lucky quarterly draw that may find you winning a 3 nights stay in their Phuket or Chiang Mai sister hotels. 18

They have 3 tracks for you to practice (“A” being the easiest one, then “B” and “C”) and you can also go for a tour in the countryside.

There are two karting tracks in Hua Hin, one is opposite the airport (take the first u-turn after the airport then turn left), and another one is behind Market Village (enter soi 88 then turn left after you cross the railway line, or enter soi 94 and turn right after the railway). The airport track is older and run by an Englishman, who will provide you with advice for your safety. A popular option is 1,000 Baht for 26 minutes (two sessions of 13 minutes). They have two-seaters (with two steering wheels) so you can take kids on the track. The soi 94 track is smaller and the karts are less powerful, but it is as much fun, and quite technical. They have smaller karts for children, suitable from around 8 yo. The service is nice, they provide you with a shower cap so you don’t sweat inside the helmet, and a refreshing towel after your race. It’s a bit more expensive (2 sessions of 8 minutes for 1,000 baht on a adult kart) but they have a happy time from 10 to noon (8 minutes for 300 Baht). 22

THAI NATURE

The

Neem Tree Indian-lilac

By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The Neem (Azadirachta indica, syn .: Melia azadirachta L., Antelaea azadirachta (L. Adelb.), also called Niem, (Nimtree (eng.), margousier (fr.), is one of the two species of the genus Azadirachta. The other type is Azadirachta excelsa. The active ingredient-rich parts of the plant, are used in medicine and agriculture.

Description

T

he neem is a fast growing, mostly evergreen tree, which achieves average stature heights of 15 to 20 meters, under favorable conditions up to 40 meters. It can reach a live span of up to 200 years of age. Under unfavorable conditions, the tree loses its leaves to protect itself from dehydration. The branches are widely distributed , the treetop is round to oval with dense leaf growth. On free standing trees, the diameter of the crown may well correspond to his height. The stem is in general relatively short and rarely exceeds ten feet. At the first branching, the bark is hard and colored between whitish gray to reddish brown. The outer layers of the wood are bright, the internal reddish. If the inner layers of the wood gets in contact with air, they turn reddish brown. The root system consists of a strong taproot that can reach twice as deep into the ground as the tree is high, as well as a branched root system. The imparipinnate leaves are a total of 20 to 40 centimeters long and consist of 31 medium to dark green part leaves, which are three to eight centimeters long. The petiole is relatively short, young leaves often have a reddish-purple color. 30

APPROACH June 2016

The neem tree is monoecious, every tree therefore is developing both male and female flowers. 150 to 250 flowers are located on one, up to 25 centimeters long, panicle, which is branched out up to three times. The white and fragrant flowers are five to six millimeters in length and have a diameter of eight to eleven millimeters.

Fruits After four years, a neem tree bears for the first time, fruits. After ten years, it provides 40 to 50 kilograms of fruits and is therefore reaching its full fruit yield.

THAI NATURE

Usage in medicine Indian doctors are applying neem products for over 2000 years against; anemia, hypertension, hepatitis, ulcers, leprosy, hives, thyroid disorders and digestive disorders and in medicine of Ayurveda. Niem is used as a remedy for head lice and in the dental and oral hygiene, and to help in diabetes mellitus and cancer, as well as reducing cholesterol levels. Likewise Niem products are used in India as a spermicide and abortion, for centuries. Indian researchers have confirmed these effects. The oil from the neem tree is also used in the control of dust mites. The Niem tree seed oil extract, makes the food source of the mites (dander) inedible and simultaneously stops the growth of the larvae.

Ingredients Although the tree has been studied for decades, many of his agents are not fully understood. Niem contains more than 100 different chemical ingredients, which are in the roots, the bark, leaves and fruits. Many of these ingredients are very complex compositions, and only approximate values of the structural formulas are known.

Use in agriculture

A particularly important ingredient is the insecticidal Azadirachtin. It is extracted from the neem oil, which is pressed from the seeds. Other important ingredients are Salannin, Meliantriol, Nimbin and Nimbidin.

Dissemination and site conditions Originally the Niem comes from India, Pakistan and Burma. The Neem is dependent on tropical and subtropical climate. The tree has become native in the Asian, the African, the American and the Australian continent and on the islands in the Pacific through humans. The Niem is encountered mainly in the flat and arid areas of the tropics and subtropics. In the mountains it is rarely found. The neem is known for its resistance to drought. It can survive well in areas with an average annual precipitation from 400 to 1200 mm but it is also found in areas with lower precipitation, he then depends on ground/soilwater.

In agriculture and gardening, seeds and oil are used as fertilizer as well as the control and prevention of insect-, nematode-, mites and fungi infestation. Produced from seed scrap and water, solutions for casting or spraying against insect pests are widespread. While with chemical pesticides for insect, resistance has been observed, with Niem solutions no resistances are expected, because of their complexity. For the insecticidal effect a number of ingredients are central: • Azadirachtin is similar in its effect to the hormone ecdysone. It prevents pests from multiplying and eating crops. In addition, it is effective against various nematodes. • Salannin has a repellent effect on insects and protects crops very effective against insect damage. • Meliantriol acts like a deterrent to insects such as Salannin and stops even locusts.

The Niem can grow in many types of soil, but prefers sandy soils with a pH of 6.2 to 7.0. Waterlogging is not tolerated by the tree. Are the roots for too long in water, then he will die. The optimal annual average temperatures are 30 ° C to 32 ° C. Higher temperatures are tolerated by the tree, temperatures below 4 ° C are not good for the Niem: he loses its leaves and dies. By contrast, the tree can withstand temperatures above 50 ° C, very well.

• Nimbin and Nimbidin and are effective against viruses.

Usage

The neem tree is used for the reclamation reforeststation of desert areas and has a high CO2 throughput. As the tree grows very rapidly, its cultivation acts quickly against the deforestation of natural forests. Niem trees help against soil erosion and reduce the wind speed. They provide shade, cool the environment and protect the ground vegetation.

Plant parts of the neem tree and products made out of it, act antibacterial and antiviral and can be used as an insecticide, fungicide, spermicide, fertilizer and feed. Therefore, they are used both in medicine and in agriculture as well as horticulture.

The wood of the neem tree is a very good fuel and is used as firewood. The neem leaves are used as a very popular cattle feed. This protects the rest of the vegetation. The residues from the neem oil extraction (press cake) can be used as nutrient and mineral-rich animal feed.

The

Panama Papers and You

By Jerry McMenamin

S

ince the collection of leaked documents exposing a widespread system of global tax evasion known widely as “The Panama Papers” hit the headlines last month, offshore investors worldwide have been tarred with the same brushtax cheats.

Let me give you one example.

That of course makes a much better story for the popular and unpopular media than stating the facts.

In your first year here you invested the proceeds of your house sale say 1 million sterling offshore. You had a good broker and you investment grew to 1.5 million.

The recent vile attack on innocent tourists in Hua Hin has made world headlines deservedly so. However in the interests of balance which has never been a burden on the popular media it would be nice to see reporting which reflects why I have lived in Hua Hin for the past twenty years. I never have. I understand why journalists are like this however. I can hear their editors telling them to try and get some sensational sex exploitation stories here when in fact they don’t have to leave their own doorsteps to get plenty of sex and violence. Sadly the millions of good Thai people are never properly portrayed in the foreign press. So with that background it’s hardly surprising to have all offshore investors branded as cheats. When I first sold offshore investing to expats in Bangkok the popular belief abroad was that this area of investing was full of dope dealers and gun runners. Anyone who has lived and worked here for more than a year has probably had a visit from an offshore broker who has rightly pointed out the huge benefits for a genuine expat. I’m not going to list them here again but the point is for European investors any offshore investment made here are 100 percent legal.

Let’s say you are a Briton who has lived here for 15 years but you and your wife decide to return home to spend more time with your grandchildren.

You can transfer your investment to the UK and keep the half million gain tax free. You can then take 5% tax deferred from the million for 20 years which is a tax free income in the UK of 50,000 a year. No one in their right mind should miss out on that.

Please don’t miss out on this legal bonanza.

THAI LEGAL

Y

ou can only be arrested in Thailand if there's a warrant for your arrest, unless you create special circumstances by doing something really stupid like having drugs on yourself. You may be arrested by not only police officers, but military officials, customs officers, and the Narcotics Control Board.

The arresting officers aren't allowed to use excessive force on you, or restrain you in a way that's excessive or intended only to humiliate you. You have the right to call and have a lawyer present. If you are injured, the arresting officer must take you to get any medical emergencies treated before taking you to the police station. The arresting officer may not keep you in an intermediate facility, like a private home or car, for more than a few minutes pending your arrival at the station. Once you arrive at the police station, you must be provided with a translator (unless you can speak Thai) at the expense of the state. Note that if you give a confession, always consult a lawyer before giving or signing any confessions. You must be given the opportunity to call a friend, relative, or other party at the expense of the state. Call a friend who speaks both Thai and your native language fluently, and who will be tactful with the police. On that note, you should also always act completely respectful and polite with Thai police - never lose your temper.

The officer must identify himself as a police officer, by, for example, showing you his badge. He must also show you the warrant or tell you the charge. If there is a warrant, you should ask to see it. It will be in Thai, so you should try to get a friend or colleague to translate for you (if possible). If there is an obvious defect in the warrant, you should point this out to the arresting officer. You should do your best to get a copy of the warrant, and have a lawyer check its validity. If the police insist on going ahead with the arrest despite any error with the warrant, do not resist arrest – this can be sorted out later.

Under most circumstances, the police cannot keep you for more than 48 hours in the arrest phase, unless you are arrested for narcotics, in which case, you can be held up to three days. During this time, if the police officers consider it necessary, they may turn you over for further questioning.

Always carry your passport, Thai driver´s licence or a copy of your passport with you. 34

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Foods AVOID you should

at all times

The list of foods you should avoid to stay healthy is long and cooking cultures of global regions do not necessarily contribute towards healthy eating. In all of Asia, MSG ( Mono Sodium Glutamat) is used in the food industry as a flavour enhancer. A study reported that monosodium glutamate can lead to the development of significant liver inflammation, central obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Cooking with palm and corn oil continues the list. Most people think that they are pretty healthy. But regardless of how it is labeled, be sure to steer clear from these “health” foods because they are anything but beneficial for your body!

Secondly, most people lack the enzymes necessary to digest unfermented soy, similarly to how many people are lactose intolerant. This causes indigestion, gas, bloating, and a whole slew of GI issues. Soy protein is unsafe because it has been linked to the following:

Some fruit Juices Most varieties you can buy at the store are pasteurized, which basically renders these products useless because they are stripped of much of their nutrition.

• Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) • Asthma - Breast cancer • Cystic fibrosis • Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) • Kidney disease • Urinary bladder cancer and many more…

Heating juice kills the chemical makeup of vitamins and minerals and unless it is truly “raw,” it is little more than flavored fructose.

40

APPROACH June 2016

Another one of the top “health” foods you should never eat is non-organic, genetically modified corn microwave popcorn. Filled with carcinogens (a substance that can cause cancer) it is just not worth the convenience. Even if you were to find some organic varieties out there, it still wouldn’t be safe to eat because microwavable bags are coated with PFOAs, a chemical that is linked to cancer. Make your own popcorn: Buy organic popcorn kernels at a natural foods store. Use coconut oil or organic butter and pour 3 tablespoons into a heavy stainless steel pan.

Non-organic, genetically modified meat products are absolute death foods and, absolutely foods that you should never eat. Even if it is “lean” with all the excess fat trimmed off, should never be part of anyone’s natural health regimen.

Soy Protein

First off, nearly 100% of all soy is genetically modified is “Roundup ready,” which means that it has a chemical pesticide to “naturally” repel bugs.

Microwaved Popcorn

Conventional Meat

Drinking freshly pressed juice at home is far more healthier provided you drink it slow.

Contrary to popular belief, soy products are not healthy for you which includes unfermented Soy - Edamame, Soy milk and Soy protein is quite another.

Why? Because most are fed genetically modified feed.

Farmed Fish Other health foods you should never eat are farmed fish. Even salmon, touted for being the health fish of choice is virtually poison to consume if farmed.

Essentially, YOU are what THEY eat and if the livestock that you’re grilling up for supper is force-fed pesticideridden, hormone-stuffed feed, then that’s what enters in your GI tract and literally gets stored in your fat cells. The recommendation is that you always purchase meat from a trusted

local source. Get to know your food growers and ranchers. It’s worthwhile to become familiar with how your food is sourced and prepared.

They cause: Atherosclerosis - Birth defects - Bone and tendon problems - Cancer Diabetes - Digestive disorders - Heart disease - Increased cholesterol levels - Liver problems - Obesity – among many other disorders.

Margarine Although margarine is still being praised as a health food, “Margarine is made from vegetable oils, so it contains no cholesterol. Margarine is also higher in “good” fats — polyunsaturated and monounsaturated — than butter is. Butter, on the other hand, is made from animal fat, so it contains cholesterol and high levels of saturated fat. However, unfortunately, this is not correct! Ever since it was created, margarine has been made out of trans fat, which are known to clog arteries and cause cardiovascular disease. Trans fat also increases someone’s risk of developing type II diabetes and several other severe health problems such as increase the incidence of coronary heart disease. Saturated fats however have been found to increase good cholesterol and lower the bad. It just doesn’t add up! Butter is back! The fat-soluble vitamins in butter far outrank margarine. Butter is loaded with Vitamins A, E, and K2 (which is higher in grass-fed dairy). Vitamin K2 helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, cancer and osteoporosis). Butter also changes the structure of short chain LDL fatty acids (which are linked to heart disease) into more benign longer chain fatty acids!

Vegetable Oils Some more “health” foods you should NEVER eat are vegetable oils. Handin-hand with margarine, vegetable oils like canola are not healthy by any stretch of the imagination. They are usually genetically modified.

Oils you should safely use are, cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and pure coconut oil. Attention : When buying coconut oil you should make sure it smells like coconut when you buy it, otherwise it has been most likely pasteurized and is not as healthy for you.

Table Salt Standard table salt definitely should be on the top of health foods you should never eat. Pretty much everyone has heard that white table salt causes hypertension.

HEALTH & WELLNESS A much more suitable replacement is not even a replacement at all, but the original product! There are more than 10 significant health benefits of Celtic sea salt and Himalayan salt.

Artificial Sweeteners Being “artificial,” you’d think fake sweeteners would be used cautiously by people. Unfortunately, many doctors recommend them because they are supposedly safe for diabetics because they are low on the glycemic index. The opposite symptoms are evident. New research has shown that artificial sweeteners causes a disturbance in gut flora and can actually cause diabetes! Sugar substitutes have been clinically linked to: Allergies - Bladder cancer - Brain tumors - Breast cancer – Headaches – Hypertension - Lymphomas/leukemia – Phenylketonuria - Seizures and Weight gain/obesity Replace artificial sweeteners (and refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup, etc.) with natural sweeteners like stevia, xylitol and small amounts of agave nectar or raw honey.

Conventional Milk

Manufacturers use harvesting methods that strip it of all its naturallyoccurring minerals, and then use a number of additives (including aluminum) to dry it and heat it to temperatures of about 1,200 degrees. The naturally occurring iodine is then replaced with potassium iodide in potentially toxic amounts. The salt is then stabilized with dextrose, which turns it purple. Finally it is bleached white.

The dangers of conventional milk lays hidden in the genetic modification of the cow feed and hormones administered to boost milk production. When raw milk is pasteurized, it also loses its nutritional content and is pretty much useless. Because the enzyme lactase is destroyed in the heating process, people cannot properly digest the milk sugar, lactose. By far, raw and organic milk is healthier and can usually be found in cheese or yogurt forms in local health food stores. June 2016 APPROACH

KIDS & EDUCATION

Are tablets the next big thing in education? Learning Games For Kids & Cell phones in school

Tablets

The use of technology in the classroom is nothing new. Though it may not seem like it now, the ball point pen was quite a technological breakthrough compared to the inkwell. Chalkboards, film projectors, tape recorders, overhead projectors and whiteboards have all contributed to classroom instruction over the years. And each one started out as a new technology that the teacher embraced as an instructional aide. Computer labs were a significant addition to schools, and laptops later brought interactivity to new levels. Students could now ditch their multiple notebooks, and sometimes even textbooks, in favour of the allin-one laptop. They could use it for taking notes, writing papers, researching information and even test-taking, if the teacher was savvy enough. Now personal computing has become faster and even more accessible with the invention of products like smartphones and tablet computers. Some might argue that the most innovative and advanced tablet is Apple’s popular iPad. Fans of the iPad use it for everything from streaming movies and connecting with others via social media to opening up the world of the Internet on a sleek and convenient platform. The intuitive interface of the iPad has made them easy for children to use, so it should come as no surprise that teachers have now embraced the iPad for 44

APPROACH June 2016

use in the classroom. However, other Android pads are just as competitive and even surpass the hailed iPads when it comes to the selectivity of Apps.

Educational Games

Educational games are a great tool for building foundation math and language skills that today’s elementary school curriculum requires. Educational games might not sound fun, but be assured (and your child) that they can be. You just have to play the right ones. According to researchers at MIT, the average 8th grade girl spends 12 hours a week playing, while teen boys devote a staggering 23 hours a week to gaming. While some parents see these as wasted hours, others see them as a powerful opportunity to supplement a child’s education and reinforce critical skills using an interactive tool that kids not only understand, but also enjoy. Of course, even the best educational games won’t work if your kids won’t play them. The key is to look for games that incorporate educational themes within an engaging framework that will keep them motivated and excited to play. Skip the “skills and drills” programs, and check out these five titles that will encourage your kids to learn and have fun on the computer

at the same time.

KIDS & EDUCATION

Game Examples At first glance, a game called “Itzabitza” might appear to be nothing but a fun, albeit simple, drawing program. Watch your child play for a bit, though, and you’ll see that it’s much more. This game -- designed for 4- to 8-year-olds -- motivates kids to learn to read by asking them to draw pictures and objects. As the child draws, the game brings their creations to life using a unique “Living Ink” technology. Even the

most rudimentary rocket ship will blast off, and a young child’s representation of a cloud can spill enough rain to cause the characters in the game to break out their umbrellas. While they play, children not only improve reading comprehension, but also learn problem solving, creativity and logic skills. After your child has conquered the original “Itzabitza,” pick up a copy of its companion game, “Itzazoo,” to keep your kid engaged.

Why should small children have all the fun? Ditch the boring flash cards and practice tests in favor of “FutureU,” an engaging and educational SAT prep game by Kaplan. This game brings the company’s renowned SAT-prep curriculum to both PC and Mac users by using mini games to help students hone their reading, writing and math skills. This is arguably the best and most enjoyable way to prepare for the muchdreaded SAT, and there’s even a special section aimed at improving teens’ test-taking skills. Perhaps the best thing about this game is that it can be played in short bursts, allowing students to fit in a few minutes of educational play whenever they have the time.

www.learninggamesforkids.com has some cool programmes for school kids.

Cell Phones Not so long ago, giving children their own cell phones was an extravagance. As recently as 2004, just 18 percent of 12-year-olds had joined the mobile revolution, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Jump to 2011, and the same study reveals that 58 percent of 12-year-olds -- and almost 75 percent of kids ages 12 to 17 -- has his or her own phone. Even schools have gotten onboard, many of them easing restrictions so kids can bring their phones to school as long as they don’t use them in class. Editor: Some Hua Hin schools allow kids to carry cell phones. In modern life it makes sense as long as kids are not playing on their phones during school time. June 2016 APPROACH

The latest Scooters

Scooters are two-wheeled vehicles that are unique in the fact that the engine is usually under the seat and directly attached to the rear axle. This allows the rider to not have to straddle the engine but puts a limitation on rear suspension quality. Scooters, in contrast to many other classes of motorcycles, have bodywork to conceal all the mechanicals. These make for great runabouts in the city and are amazingly prevalent in Asia. In Thailand the ratio cars to motorbikes including scooters is hard to estimate although our streets are heavily populated with these flashing vehicles. Unfortunately there are also many road accidents caused by motorbikes and many of the fatal crashed could be avoided if both the driver and passengers would wear a helmet. The luxury scooters listed below was a limited selection of the leading brands.

B

uilt on a sloped hillside overlooking a stretched valley all the way to the neighbouring hills that border Hua Hin with Myanmar, the Banyan Golf Club in Hua Hin opened in October 2008. The Banyan was awarded the Best New Course in Asia Pacific by the readers of Asian Golf Monthly in 2009. Since then, the Banyan golf course and clubhouse has consistently claimed ‘Top 3 in Thailand’ awards and been featured in the ‘Rolex Top 1000’ in the World. The world class 18-hole championship golf course was designed by Thailand golf course architect Pirapon Namatra and is known to be one of the best layouts in the country if not internationally! With six tee boxes on each hole, golfers can select the kind of challenge matching their skill level in the same way the strategically placed bunkers, sand traps and water hazards do. The signature hole #15 offers magnificent sea views and is a 139 yard par-3 while the 12th hole is arguably the most challenging with a total of 610 yards par-5, all uphill. Banyan golf club’s facilities offer a variety of facilities including driving range, two large putting and chipping greens to improve your skillset. The clubhouse features reception area, fully stocked pro shop as well as stylish locker rooms. Restaurant, Spa suites and a pub with views across the mountain ranges invite for some down time after the game. The Banyan resort is located a short drive away and is an ideal starting point for your golf vacation.

Golf information & events through June and July can be found on their website: www.banyanthailand.com or simply call: +66 (0) 3261 6200 for golf bookings. June 2016 APPROACH

T h a i l a n d S e r i e s 2016

A DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE BY THE ASIAN TENNIS FEDERATION TO HELP PROVIDE YOUNG PLAYERS A MORE STRUCTURED PATHWAY TO PROFESSIONAL CIRCUIT The Asian Tennis Federation announced the launch of a new development initiative which essentially looks at providing a developmental pathway to the young Men’s players in Asia.

The Asian Tennis Tour has been created with the specific objective of enhancing opportunities for the young Asian tennis players, to fill up the void between the national and international professional circuits. This transition void has been traditionally resulting in many of these players dropping off from the game, due to lack of chances of making a decent living and advancement in their professional careers.

The main objectives:

1. To provide a robust circuit to young Asian tennis players, offering them competition within their region right through the year.

2. To help the transition of junior players into the professional circuits

3. To help professional circuit players to earn a decent living from the game, enabling them to invest in their journey of becoming an international professional tennis player.

4. To provide a, circuit which allows the Tournament Directors I National Federations across Asia, to remain within budget, while providing competitive opportunities to its players

5. To keep the Prize Money take away by players, with in the Asian subcontinent by providing a closed circuit for the Asian players

6. To act as a development circuit to produce better quality players in Asia At True Arena, Tennis Coach Arturo Navarro will be organizing demo sessions at several local schools to promote the program and scout for tennis talents. You are invited to join this evening event every Friday from 6pm until 8pm at True Arena Sport Centre. 56
