EDITORIAL

A

fter a year of a great cooperation, the creator of APPROACH Magazine, the founder, Ralph Ruijs is moving up the career ladder and decided to move to in Bangkok. Ralph has mainly contributed to making APPROACH a success with his graphic creativity and fantasy. Working with an InDesign / Photoshop programme sound easy but is quite complicated. Not my cup of tea. On behalf of all our readers, we wish you all the best. Ralph will definitely still contribute behind the scenes. Did get creative feedback on the culinary section in which we mainly project what is good and bad for your health. Many of our readers still do not get it that the multi food and beverage companies are making huge profits on account of our health.Whereas drug companies hold back development deliberately in order to sell their present products and food research companies carry on with genetically modified food to increase crops containing unhealthy chemicals, we enjoy good taste and don’t let anyone spoil our sumptuous dinner. However, most of the Gulf coast Hotels and chefs are becoming more aware of a turn needed and are offering organic food, healthy brunches and dinners.

As further in this magazine, a glass of red wine hurts no one. On the contrary it is definitely healthy and a clear pint hasn’t hurt anyone either. It is not the deed, but it is the frequent repetition within a small time frame which is harmful! Figure it out. As Hua Hin fills more and more, roads are not only becoming undriveable because of heavy traffic but also Gerard Mosselman (GMoss) Chief Editor - Director damaged unfinished roads (Soi112). Hopefully our municipality will take quick action as this is not good for our image” A jewel on The Gulf Coast”. Across the borders, unpleasant news from our Ukraine and Russian friends fill the media. Of course the West had to try to intervene. Wouldn´t be the West if they didn´t. Hopefully this problem and our own distress is solved in a “Make Love Not War” manner. Hope you like our June edition and do write if you would like to contribute to our contents or remark read editorial. Yours truly, GMoss We apologize for a late delivery caused by the temporarily reduced working hours of our printer and distribution system.

MUSIC

JAZZ! JAZZ! JAZZ! INTERNATIONAL JAZZ EVE

AT

THE

BANYAN

OVERWHELMING!

T

he international Quartet and Trio from Dominique DiPiazza and Philppe Sellam turned out to be a sensational performance of

top contemporary and classic Jazz music. Both ensembles played 45 minutes each, practically nonstop top notch music after which they joined forces in a thirty minute jam session. Philippe Sellam arrived in Hua Hin on May 10th and strolled along our beaches to acclimatize. In the evening both RenÊ Marrug , the Jazz agent who runs Mephisto Jazz met up with Thai saxophonist Koh Mr. Saxman on Hua Hin beach, where a poorly visited and unrelated jazz session took place. Philippe spontaneously joined Ko on stage and both jammed to the pure delight of the spectators. On May 12th , the Banyan Jazz Gala took place where guests could admire real Jazz with a delicious Buffet Dinner. Dominique DiPiazza excelled on his Electric Bass and the diatonic harmonica played by Sebastian Charlier reminded us of Toots Tieleman´s best days. Johann Schmitt drummed and deserved to be mentioned in one breath with Daniel Humair, a present drummer great. Yannick Robert strummed the guitar in superior fashion leaving nothing musically to be desired off. Fred Dupont played the sophisticated Nord C1 Synthesiser Key board brilliantly, which replicates the famous Hammond organ sound. Local Jazz Saxophone Matador George joined the guys on invitation and displayed an exemplary performance of spontaneous jazz jamming. This is what Jazz is all about! An event , well organized by the Banyan Resort and Mephisto Jazz. A show case of how an international mini festival should be organized. Announced well in advance with top international Jazz stars.

THE KINGDOM OF

NEPAL The Kingdom of Nepal was formed in 1768 by the unication of Nepal. Founded by King Prithvi Narayan Shah, a Gorkhali monarch, it existed for 240 years until the abolition of the Nepalese monarchy in 2008. During this period, Nepal was formally under the rule of the Shah dynasty, which exercised varying degrees of power during the kingdom's existence. However, on 28 May 2008, declaring in its place, the establishment of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Nepal, the landlocked multiethnic, multilingual, multi-religious country, is situated north of India in the Himalayas, in the region where, about 40 to 50 million years ago, the Indian subcontinent has crashed into Asia. Because of that accident, Nepal has some of the world's highest mountains including Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest, 8848m, which it shares with Tibet (by now a province of China). The highest mountain on Earth is towering above populated valleys and forested plains. Somewhere here in the Kapilavastu district, there is a place called Lumbini where in about 500 B.C.E. Queen Mayadevi is said to have given birth to Siddhartha Gautama, better known as Buddha.

The climate in Nepal varies with elevation, tropical in the lower southern part Tarai, mid-hills alpine and the high mountains polar; elevation ranges from 90 to 8848 meters Kathmandu, largest city and the national capital of Nepal ,is situated along the Bagmati River, in central Nepal in the Himalayas at an altitude of 4,450 feet (1,370 m). Kathmandu has a population of about 1.5 million inhabitants in its urban area. Official language is Nepali and especially in Kathmandu area Nepal Bhasa (Newari). The Boudhanath stupa in Kathmandu is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Nepal along with Swayambhunath complex. Boudhanath became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Most visits to Nepal are trouble-free. If you’re trekking, use a reputable agency, remain on established routes, and walk in groups. You should never trek alone. Nepal is considered to be at high risk of a major earthquake. See Natural disasters. All air carriers from Nepal have been refused permission to operate air services to the EU due to safety concerns. See Safety and security.

Nepal can be divided broadly into three ecological zones: the lowland, the midland and the highland. The altitude of the Himalayan Region (the highland) ranges between 4877 m - 8848 m, It includes 8 of the highest 14 summits in the world, which exceed altitude of 8000 meters including Mount Everest.

The Monsoon season in Nepal normally runs from June to September and can make travel in rural areas hazardous. Take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you travel. If you are intending to travel at altitude, check that your insurance policy provides cover.

The mountain region accounts for about 64 percent of total land area, which is formed by the Mahabharat range that soars up to 4877 m and the lower Churia range. The lowland Terai occupies about 17 percent of the total land area of the country.

The things he has to do to feel better are: be calm, walk slower, a modest increase of uids, not to ascend more than 400 meters per day in sleeping elevation. Slowly he will see that the symptoms will disappear. If not the only thing he has to do is DESCEND. Always communicate your travel plans to your next of kin. This applies to everyone but especially women that are travelling single – they seem to more vulnerable.Food safety - Avoid water that is not bottled or boiled. Avoid raw vegetables and pre-cut fruit as much as possible. Even though Nepal is known for its pristine environment and beauty – not the highways and major city streets. They are crowded with traffic, full of smoke and bumpy and dusty. Hence travelling on a bicycle or a motorbike for the most part is not advisable. There are some off-road mountain bike trails that are ok to do. There are daily scheduled power outages. Have a ashlight handy all the times. All nightlife pretty much ends by 10 pm with only a few places around the Thamel area that may stay open a little later. Bring a universal plug and voltage adapter kit for your Electronics. Nepal uses 220V. Keep in mind that there may be an entrance fee to some of the common temples and public areas applicable only to foreigners ranging anywhere from 250R's - 700R's. Always have some tissue paper and hand sanitizer with you at all times – and note that some of the toilets may require squatting. Insist for a Running Meter in the Taxi. After 10 PM you do pay double of the meter fare however – that’s the commonly accepted norm.

Do not trek alone. There have been numerous disappearances of solo trekkers in recent years. Always hire a guide or trek with other people. There are online forums where travelers can look for fellow-trekkers. High Altitude Sickness : Travelling in Himalayan Region can be risky if the traveller doesn't take little actions to protect himself and if he doesn't know how to listen to the signals his body gives him.

World Heritages in South East Asia A SELECTION OF SOUTH EAST ASIAN WORLD HERITAGES AS DESIGNATED BY THE UNESCO

Angkor

Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 401 km2 = 40,000 hectares, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings. The site was listed as endangered from its inscription in times of political instability following the civil war in the 1980s to 2004.

Lenggon Valley

Ban Chiang

Perak – Malaysia - The site includes four archaeological sites in two clusters which span close to two million years, one of the longest records of early man in a single locality, and the oldest outside the African continent. It features open-air and cave sites with Palaeolithic tool workshops, evidence of early technology.

Udon Thani – Thailand - Ban Chiang is considered the most important prehistoric settlement so far discovered in South-East Asia. It was the centre of a remarkable phenomenon of human cultural, social, and technological evolution in the 5th millennium BCE, which occurred independently in this area of south-east Asia and spread widely over the whole region. It marks an important stage in human cultural, social and technological evolution. The site presents the earliest evidence of farming in the region and of the manufacture and use of metals.

Baroque Churches of the Philippines

Manila – Santa Maria - Llocos - Norte and Miag - Ao - These four churches were built by the Spanish in the late 16th century. Their unique architectural style is a reinterpretation of European Baroque by Philippine craftsmen. Services are still held in these churches up to the present day.

Borobudur Temple Compounds

Magelang Regency, Central Java Indonesia - This famous Buddhist temple, dating from the 8th and 9th centuries, is located in central Java. It was built in three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa. The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 m2. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha. The monument was restored with UNESCO’s help in the 1970s.

Ha Long Bay

HERITAGE

Quang Ninh Province – Vietnam - Hạ Long Bay, in the Gulf of Tonkin, includes some 1,600 islands and islets, forming a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars. Because of their precipitous nature, most of the islands are uninhabited and unaffected by a human presence. The site’s outstanding scenic beauty is complemented by its great biological interest.

Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex

Thailand - Over several provinces - The Dong PhayayenKhao Yai Forest Complex spans 230 km between Ta Phraya National Park on the Cambodian border in the east, and Khao Yai National Park in the west. The site is home to more than 800 species of fauna, including 112 mammal species (among them two species of gibbon), 392 bird species and 200 reptile and amphibian species. It is internationally important for the conservation of globally threatened and endangered mammal, bird and reptile species, among them 19 that are vulnerable, four that are endangered, and one that is critically endangered. The area contains substantial and important tropical forest ecosystems, which can provide a viable habitat for the longterm survival of these species.

Historic City of Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya province, Thailand - Ruins of Stupas of various sizes. Founded c. 1350, Ayutthaya became the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai. It was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century. Its remains, characterized by the prang (reliquary towers) and gigantic monasteries, give an idea of its past splendour. Located just an hour out of Bangkok, it remains a popular tourist destination to this day.

Historic Town of Vigan

Ilocos Sur, Philippines - Established in the 16th century, Vigan is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. Its architecture reflects the coming together of cultural elements from elsewhere in the Philippines, from Asia and from Europe, resulting in a culture and townscape that have no parallel anywhere in East and South-East Asia.

Lorentz National ParkPapua

Indonesia - Lorentz National Park (2.35 million ha) is the largest protected area in South-East Asia. It is the only protected area in the world to incorporate a continuous, intact transect from snowcap to tropical marine environment, including extensive lowland wetlands. Located at the meeting-point of two colliding continental plates, the area has a complex geology with ongoing mountain formation as well as major sculpting by glaciation. The area also contains fossil sites which provide evidence of the evolution of life on New Guinea, a high level of endemism and the highest level of biodiversity in the region.

Malacca

Malaysia - Melaka and George Town, historic cities of the Straits of Malacca have developed over 500 years of trading and cultural exchanges between East and West in the Straits of Malacca. The influences of Asia and Europe have endowed the towns with a specific multicultural heritage that is both tangible and intangible. With its government buildings, churches, squares and fortifications, Melaka demonstrates the early stages of this history originating in the 15th-century Malay sultanate and the Portuguese and Dutch periods beginning in the early 16th century. Featuring residential and commercial buildings, George Town represents the British era from the end of the 18th century. The two towns constitute a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.

ENVIRONMENT

Climate Change – Carbon Footstep We are convinced that climate change due to natural forces is constant.

H

owever, we should stop pretending that half of Florida and the Netherlands is about to be submerged under rising sea levels, because no scientist really believes that to be the case.

On the other hand, we should stop ignoring the science and should drop the conspiracy theories and the scientific pretense. You know why this is so important? Because if we submit to the science, we can then properly start by far the most important debate: what we need to do about global warming. For years, temperature data showed an approx 0.8C temperature increase since pre-industrial times mostly in two upturn periods 1910-1940, 1977-1998, other periods being essentially flat. In fields like medicine and climatology that have strong effects on what people in society decide to do (get certain screenings done, spend money on expensive treatments, reduce carbon output), aside from doing research and convincing other trained scientists that their results are correct, scientists have some role in communicating these results to the public. Carbon Footprint A carbon footprint can be defined as the total sets of greenhouse gas emissions caused by an organization, event, product or person. The Average Carbon Footprint in the United States vs. World - The average U.S. household carbon footprint is about 50 tons CO2e per year. The single largest source of emissions for the typical household is from driving (gasoline use). Transportation as a whole (driving, flying & small amount from public transit) is the largest overall category, followed by housing (electricity, natural gas, waste, construction) then food (mostly from red meat, dairy and seafood products, but also includes emissions from all other food), then goods followed lastly by services. Last but not least the use of inefficient air-conditioning systems and the waste of electric energy. The carbon footprint of U.S. households is about 5 times greater than the global average, which is approximately 10 tons CO2e per household per year. This makes the US the largest For most U.S. households, the single most important action to reduce their carbon footprint is driving less or switching to a more efficient vehicle. An interesting presentation of Christopher C. Seeley at the Centara Grand Skal Meeting showed how much energy could be saved through intelligent systems such as solar power, heat pumps and LED lights. The Centara Grand is a perfect example of environmental responsibility with the separation of waste , application of solar energy , heat pumps and recycling waste water. In future editions of APPROACH we will be reporting about Environmental responsibilities and how households can contribute towards making our Earth a better place and save household money at the same time.

Trees of Thailand

The Miracle Tree Ricinus communis Miracle Tree Castor oil from the seeds he Miracle Tree (Ricinus communis) is the only species of the monotypic genus Ricinus, which belongs to the family of Euphorbiaceae.

The best known use is, as an indigestible laxatives against constipation or to accelerate defecation. The effect is two to four hours after ingestion of approximately 10 to 30 milliliters of castor oil. Some compounds of the oil act already after 10 to 20 seconds. The actual active substance is ricinoleic acid, a C18 fatty acid, is released in the small intestine by endogenous lipases (fat-splitting enzymes). Through the collection of water in the intestine an enlarged and softened stool volume , is produced and thus the laxative effect. In addition, the released ricinoleic acid leads to irritation of the intestinal mucosa, which also produces a laxative effect.

In connection with the use of the oil of castor bean seeds

as a renewable energy source, the miracle tree is therefore also called castor plant from the industry and the media. In temperate climates the plant grows as an annual herbaceous plant in the tropics as a perennial plant. The plant is vigorous and is in ideal conditions within three to four months to five meters high. In tropical climates they reached after several years of growth heights of up to 13 meters and forms a woody stem. The alternating leaves are standing 30 to 70 inches tall, shiny, green (in some varieties reddish to deep purple), have long petioles and are five to eleven palmate shaped (Peltatum). The miracle tree blooms from August to October. The unisexual flowers are inconspicuous and green yellow. In the upper half of the inflorescence only the red stamps to discerning female flowers are formed, in the lower half only the male flowers with their distinctive yellow stamens. Red-brown capsule fruits Are formed, studded with soft spines, with reddish brown-marbled, bean-shaped seeds.

Externally, castor oil is applied for the treatment of warts and ringworm Plastics production and chemical industry By far the most important application is the use as a natural polyol for polyurethane(PU) plastics. Castor oil is the only available vegetable oil in large quantities, which has by nature the required OH-functionality, to react with di-or polyisocyanates to form polyurethane polymers. The applications are PU foams (e.g. upholstery and mattresses, construction foams), casting resins (e.g, electrical encapsulation), adhesives and many more.

The miracle tree bears abundant fruits, called “castor beans which are reminiscent of a fully sucked tick. Along with its rapid growth, this leads to the fact that the plant is considered as an invasive species (neophyte).

Even as a raw material for linoleum flooring, paint and varnish production, castor oil is used as a softener in the plastics industry as well as lubricants. In the cosmetics industry it is used as raw material for lipsticks, shampoos and other cosmetics. In the model and motorsport, castor oil is added as lubricating component to the fuel of two-stroke engines. Combustion of such two-stroke mixtures produces a characteristic odor.

This plant is native to northeast Africa and the Middle East. As a cultural refugee, it has now spread to all tropical areas, also to Thailand. The specie loves a sunny, warm and windless area . The soil should be humus and nutrient rich and well drained. While good water supply promotes growth, but once it has established , it is no longer mandatory since the plant tolerates drought periods. Castor oil - The viscous, clear to yellowish castor oil, (also ricin oil, pharmaceutical name: ricini oleum, formerly; oleum ricini Castoris) is pressed cold from the seeds of the plant (oil content of about 40 to 50%), it consists of 70 to 77 percent of triglycerides of ricinoleic acid. In contrast to the seed, it is non-toxic. In addition to its medical application, it is used in a mixture with methanol for the lubrication of internal combustion engines in models (Nitro engines).

Ricin is one of the most potent, naturally occurring toxins in general, and also very easy to produce. Since it also acts via the respiratory tract, it has been tested by armies on its use as a chemical warfare agent. Its use, however, discarded and destroyed all relevant inventories, especially since it is difficult to disperse as an aerosol and more suitable for attacks on individuals, then of mass killings. Ricin is documented in Paragraph 1 of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) listed containing the poisonous toxins, and at the same time in the last version of the Organic and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC).

Ricin - The seed coats of the miracle tree are very poisonous because they contain the toxic protein ricin, a lectin. APPROACH MAGAZINE

The miracle tree is a popular ornamental plant, especially as it is vigorous and of a exotic look. Ideal location in the garden is a hotbed, or any other non-shady spot. If small children or toddlers are in the house - be aware, due to the poisonous fruits. Use of castor oil - Medical application - The use of the miracle plant as medical and oil plant has been documented already around 1552 BC in ancient medical text, the ancient Egyptian Ebers Papyrus, testified, also seeds of the plant have been found in Egyptian tombs.

by Dr. George Grossniklaus

T

The ricin content in the seeds of the tree is about 1 to 5 percent. At an oral intake of ricin already a level of 0.25 milligrams can be fatal, which corresponds to a few seeds. Ricin dissolves while in water, but is fat insoluble, and therefore not included in the castor oil. During pressing of the seeds the poison thus remains in the pomace.

Ricin is currently under review due to its cytostatic, i.e growthinhibitory effect on cancer cells for use in tumor therapy. 28

FINANCIAL NEWS

The Eurozone’s Struggle for Survival DO POLITICIANS SPEND MORE TIME WORRYING ABOUT THE EUROZONE?

W

hat actually caused the Eurozone crisis?

What happened? - Italy was the worst offender. It regularly broke the 3% annual borrowing limit. But actually Germany along with Italy - was the first big country to break the 3% rule. France followed. Spain’s government also has the smallest debts relative to the size of its economy. Greece, is in a class of its own. It never stuck to the 3% target, but manipulated its borrowing statistics to look good, which allowed it to get into the euro in the first place. Its waywardness was uncovered two years ago.

The eurozone has agreed a new “fiscal compact” - Eurozone parliaments are in the process of ratifying a tough set of rules - insisted on by Germany - that will limit their governments’ “structural” borrowing . The pact, which will come into force once 12 out of the 17 Eurozone member states have checked and ammended it, will also limit their total borrowing to 3%. These rules are supposed to stop them accumulating too much debt, and make sure there won’t be another financial crisis

So what really caused the crisis? - There was a big build-up of debts in Spain and Italy before 2008, but it had nothing to do with governments. Instead it was the private sector - companies and mortgage borrowers - who were taking out loans.

In 1997 when the euro was being set up, they agreed to exactly the same 3% borrowing limit,. The “stability and growth pact” was insisted on by German finance minister Theo Waigel.

FINANCIAL NEWS Interest rates had fallen to unprecedented lows in southern European countries when they joined the euro. And that encouraged a debtfuelled boom. All that debt helped finance more and more imports by Spain, Italy and even France. Meanwhile, Germany became an export power-house after the Eurozone was set up in 1999, selling far more to the rest of the world (including southern Europeans) than it was buying as imports. That meant Germany was earning a lot of surplus cash on its exports. And guess what - most of that cash ended up being lent to southern Europe. But debts are only part of the problem in Italy and Spain. During the boom years, wages rose and rose in the south and in France. But German unions agreed to hold their wages steady. So Italian and Spanish workers now face a huge competitive price disadvantage.

Spain and Italy are now facing nasty recessions, because noone wants to spend. Companies and mortgage borrowers are too busy repaying their debts to spend more. Exports are uncompetitive. And now governments - whose borrowing has exploded since the 2008 financial crisis savaged their economies - have agreed to drastically cut their spending back as well.

Eurozone Crisis Timeline

Cutspending and they are pretty sure to deepen the recession. Unemployment (already over 20% in Spain), may push wages down to more competitive levels. Even so, lower wages will just make people’s debts even harder to repay, meaning they are likely to cut their own spending even more, or stop repaying their debts. And lower wages may not even lead to a quick rise in exports, if all of your European export markets are in recession too. Indeed, this loss of competitiveness is the main reason why southern Europeans have been finding it so much harder to export than Germany.

To sum it up: government borrowing - which has ballooned since the 2008 global financial crisis - had very little to do with creating the current Eurozone crisis in the first place, especially in Spain. Greece’s government is the big exception . So even if governments don’t break the borrowing rules this time, that won’t necessarily stop a similar crisis from happening all over again. APPROACH MAGAZINE

31

Don’t cut spending and you risk a financial collapse. The amount you borrow each year has exploded since 2008 due to economic stagnation and high unemployment. If your economy looks to be chronically uncompetitive within the euro, markets are liable to lose confidence in you - they may fear your economy is simply too weak to support your ballooning debt load. Meanwhile, other European governments may not have enough money to bail you out and the European Central Bank says its mandate doesn’t allow it to. And if they won’t lend to you, why would anyone else? JUNE 2014

THAI ECONOMY A BIG WORRY

hailand’s political turmoil is wreaking greater damage on the economy than analysts had estimated, raising the stakes for leaders of the nation’s two main political camps to reach an accommodation.

percent. Total investment may fall 1.3 percent this year from an earlier prediction of a 3.1 percent increase, it said.

Gross domestic product shrank 0.6 percent in the three months through March from a year earlier, the National Economic & Social Development Board said in Bangkok today, compared to the median estimate for a 0.4 percent expansion in a Bloomberg News survey of 23 analysts.

Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy has survived coups, natural disasters and downturns in the past. However, overseas sales slipped in two of three months this year, while consumer confidence slid for a 13th straight month in April.

Thai production and tourism have been damaged by months of unrest, as opponents of ex-Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra mounted public protests and legal challenges that succeeded in removing her from office. Today’s report raises pressure on leaders from both sides to find a settlement, with no election date yet agreed to provide a government with a mandate.

Consumption fell 2.1 percent last quarter from a year earlier, while investment dropped 9.8 percent, today’s data showed. Manufacturing slipped 2.7 percent, and construction slumped 12.4 percent.

Exports Slide

“As of now, it does seem that the growth momentum is going to remain fairly weak,” said Rahul Bajoria, a Singapore-based economist at Barclays Plc. “The second half is at risk of starting on a much weaker footing” as the political uncertainty persists, with a risk of slipping into a technical recession in the first half of the year, he said.

“The prospect of government expenditure remains bleak” and with businesses also unwilling to commit to new investment, the economy may expand less than 2 percent this year, he said. The Thai baht was little changed at 32.49 against the U.S. dollar as of 10:57 a.m. local time. It is one of the worst performers in the past six months among 11 widely traded Asian currencies tracked by Bloomberg. The benchmark stock index is the only major one in Southeast Asia to have declined in the same period. The state planning agency today cut its expansion forecast for this year to 1.5 percent to 2.5 percent from a range of 3 percent to 4 percent earlier, and lowered the export growth estimate to 3.7 percent from 5 percent to 7

Vespa GT 300 Super

I imagine the 14” front wheel and sharp steering angle are responsible for that, but one thing’s for sure, the J300 is eager to nip in and out of gaps. Helped in by the generous steering lock, helped out by the punchy 28hp 299cc engine. The panels that run alongside the footboards near your heels are all painted. Is it a maxi scooter? With a 278cc single-cylinder engine, limited under-seat storage and the windscreen a option, we admit it’s borderline. But it looks really cool, wears the badge of the world’s best known scooter marque and has ‘Super’ in the name. So we’re sold. With a claimed top speed of 82mph, it’s not going worry an SRV 850, but will cruise happily at an indicated 70 and accelerate briskly enough to overtake. THAI LEGAL TIPS

Doing Business in Thailand

COST OF DOING BUSINESS IN THAILAND - TIPS

T

aking into consideration that the cost of setting up a business in Thailand may differ from province to province and prices may have been corrected slightly, here are the main examples.

Visas (typical fee charged by a law firm) Work permit (new) (1-14 days) THB 38,000 Visa extension (130 days) 28,000 857.97

ONE THING differentiates almost all Western business people that are successful in Asia, including Thailand. They’ve learned to see the culture of the country in which they’re a visitor from another viewpoint to their own.

Company registration (21 days) THB 5,500 per 1 million List 2 Alien business license (60 days) THB 40,000-500,000

For example, in Thailand, business is often based on first and on-going impressions, body language, common courtesies and attention to small details. Fitting in and collective ‘harmony’ are at a premium, as well as building long-lasting relationships and saving face (ie avoiding embarrassment) at all costs.

Accounting (1) Tax returns and VAT Accounting & Report THB 20,000 yearly Tax Rates depend on the turnover of the company. A small company with a paid up capital of less than THB 5 Million with a Net Profit of less than THB 150.000 per month is exempted from Tax. Net profits over THB 150,001 but less than THB 1 Million Pay 15%. THB 1 Million but less than THB 3 Million – 25%. Exceeding THB 3 Million - 30%

Thais still respect hierarchical relationships. Parents are superior to their children, teachers to their students, and bosses to their subordinates. Although women usually run the family finances and are increasingly visible in Thai business and government, unfortunately they still tend to be treated as secondary to men.

Personal income - up to THB 100,000/ Month– 5% - 100,001 to 500,000 – 10%. THB 500,001 to TH 1,000,000 – 20%. Max Tax for over THB 4,000,000 – 37%

Of course there’s nothing wrong with getting to the point in business negotiations. However, in a country like Thailand it’s generally considered more appropriate to take these negotiations step by step, drawing in and referring to each person or department responsible for each aspect of the deal. When all parties are fully convinced that their concerns are covered, the trust is built that ensures a long-term relationship.

Occasionally , you may be able to purchase an existing company at a favourable price. By doing so, all the processing has already be done and only your personal registration as a 49% shareholder plus a work permit in case you need one has to be processed.

TYPICAL COSTS OF STARTING AND OPERATING A BUSINESS 1. Visas (government fee) Work permit (process time 1-10 days) - 1 year THB 3,000 One-year visa (process time 1-30 days) THB 1,900 Re-entry visa (process time 1-2 days) - Single entry THB 1,900 - Multiple entry THB 3,800 APPROACH MAGAZINE

hailand is among the top ten xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx countries with the highest xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx diabetes population : The Pacific island xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx nation of Nauru has the world’s highest xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx rate of diabetes, with almost a third of its adult population (30.9%) living with the disease. Inthira Rellstab from OPF café and restaurant on Memory Hua Hin, on the corner of Soi 51 recently opened an organic food and drink shop. Conscious about health standards and alternative diets, Inthira dedicated herself to contributing towards improved health standards. APPROACH was quite curious about the organic alternative as we hear so much about healthy and unhealthy food these days. However it seems that more of us are conscious about the genetically manipulated growths of crops which not only lose a lot of their nutritious value but are just simply unhealthy as they are grown under unnatural circumstances in an unhealthy environment.

Better for the environment - Organic farming reduces pollution and greenhouse gases released from food production by restricting the use of artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Wildlife protection - Organic farms are havens for wildlife and provide homes for bees, birds and butterflies. In fact, plant, insect and bird life is up to 50% greater on organic farms.

The definition of organic food is food which is produced using environmentally and animal friendly farming methods on organic farms. These methods are legally defined and any food sold as 'organic' must be strictly regulated. Organic farming recognises the direct connection between our health and how the food we eat is produced. Artificial fertilisers are banned and farmers develop fertile soil by rotating crops and using compost, manure and clover.

Higher animal welfare - Organic standards insist that animals are given plenty of space and fresh air to thrive and grow guaranteeing a truly free-range life. A Genetically Modified free diet - GM crops and ingredients are banned under organic standards. Choosing organic is an effective way to avoid GM in your diet. Organic animals enjoy the very highest welfare standards – they are truly free range and have plenty of space and access to fields.

At OPF you can enjoy an organic meal or an organic coffee whilst different ciders are served as well. In addition, organically grown and produced produce and foodstuff is available. A glass of red or white wine will indulge your lunch or dinner. Inthira, being an expert in this field can recommend products in your own language, provided it is limited to German – English and Thai. She grew up in Switzerland and runs her shop accordingly with Swiss precision and dedication. Pay a vist to OPF and enjoy healthy dietary alternatives. The particulars are on the next page.

Why buy organic food? Find out about the advantages and benefits of choosing organic… Food you can trust - You can be safe in the knowledge that hydrogenated fats and controversial additives like aspartame, tartrazine and MSG are banned under organic standards. Most Thai food is made with MSG and loads of sugar. This causes diabetis and heart coronary disease.

The Truth about Belly Fat THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BROWN AND YELLOW FAT

A

sk anyone if they want more fat on their bodies and most likely the response will be a resounding “no way!” But before you shun the notion of added body fat, you may want to ask for clarification as to which color fat we are talking about here.

But before you crank up the AC in an effort to drop a few pounds, you’ll want to first hit the gym. Researchers also found that brown fat is more abundant in normal to underweight individuals, and more prevalent in women than men. However, this finding doesn’t sway researchers from investigating ways to increase brown fat content in all humans.

Yes, there is a difference between a fat’s color and its effect on your body. One color is responsible for the dreaded love handles, beer-bellies and thunder-thighs, while the other may just change the way you look at fat from now on.

A newly discovered hormone in lab rats, irisin, has been found to convert the dreaded white fat into calorie-burning brown fat. In one study, areas of white fat in lab mice were converted to brown fat when irisin production was stimulated.

The “bad” fat we most often think of is white or yellow fat. There’s no secret as to how we accumulate more of it or how to get rid of it. When we consume more than we burn, the excess calories are stored in our butts, thighs and bellies. However, researchers are learning more and more about the other type of fat present in our bodies: brown fat.

The key finding, however, was that irisin production and the mechanism by which the fat conversion takes place is stimulated by exercise. So while researchers and pharmaceutical companies are currently investigating ways to harness irisin’s power via synthetic drugs, you can create your own calorie-burning brown fat by simply hitting the gym.

Brown fat is most often found in animals that lack the ability to shiver. Human babies are born with a layer of brown fat as well, but much of this is lost as they grow and develop shivering capabilities. This heat-providing fat consumes calories at a rapid rate to keep the body from going into hypothermia. It is brown in color thanks to increased cell mitochondria, which are often described as mini cellular energy factories. The concept of brown fat and its ability to burn calories in an effort to keep the body warm is nothing new, as scientists have been well-aware of this mechanism in rodents for quite some time. However, new research has found the presence of brown fat in adults, via the use of PET and CT scans particularly in the upper back, collarbone and shoulder area, along the spine and up the side of the neck. To see if the adult human brown fat worked along the same lines as rodent brown fat, researchers placed study participants in a chilled room to determine if the brown fat did indeed burn extra calories. Participants with more brown fat began shivering at lower temperatures than those with less brown fat deposits, and while the brown fat was active, participants burned an extra 250 calories as compared to those with little to no brown fat.

Benefits of Natural Products by GMoss

A

lthough it seems to be a mayor discussion these days with so many different opinions and new findings by scientists almost on a daily base, contradictions making all of us insecure , the fact remains that the healthiest food is still found on the trees and bushes next to your house.

When it comes to healthy food, we are not allowed to eat bread , French fries, mashed potatoes, sausages, processed cheese, cheese and so many deliciously life´s daily foods and products that make us happy. Happiness, than, it is proclaimed by cardiologists keeps blood pressure low and peace of mind makes us live longer. Nevertheless, I must agree that we could live a lot healthier without genetically modified grain, food colouring and sugar, sodium and other chemically enriched food. We all know that eating plenty of fruits and veggies is an integral part of overall health and disease prevention. Whole foods such as fruits and vegetables are the best way to maintain and improve health while building a strong immune system. Here are some daily, obtainable and if grown without pesticides or GMF chemicals, natural products that have advanced health benefits and obtainable in Hua Hin. Antioxidants such as Seaweeds Seaweed is one of nature’s most amazing super foods. It is one of the most nutritionally dense foods on earth and the most abundant source of minerals in the entire plant kingdom, filled with antioxidants, calcium and a wide range of vitamins – but that doesn’t even begin to tell the full story of how incredibly healthy this food is for us. Seaweed is an extraordinary source of a nutrient that is missing in nearly every other food: iodine. It’s important to consume a healthy level of it in order to maintain a healthy thyroid. Seaweed contains powerful antioxidants that offer anti-cancer properties and help to decrease inflammation in the body which contributes to all types of disease and illness, including arthritis, depression, celiac disease and asthma. Which types of seaweeds can you enjoy daily? - Kelp - Kelp is the most readily available type of edible seaweed and the most common seaweed, found along ocean shores. In the store, you’ll usually find it in a dried form. Soaking it for a few minutes makes it more pliable and edible. It can also be added directly to soups. When buying seaweed, be sure to look for certified organic brands as seaweeds tend to absorb compounds that are found in the ocean where they’re grown. Buying organic will help ensure that they are grown and harvested in unpolluted waters that are free from potentially harmful substances.

Blueberries Fresh or frozen, wild blueberries are the #1 antioxidant fruit. Studies done on strawberries and raspberries found that there was no difference statistically in the antioxidant levels of fresh and frozen. The conclusion for the raspberry study was, “that freshly picked, fresh commercial, and frozen raspberries all contain similar levels of phytochemicals per serving.” There is a growing body of research supporting the consumption of berry fruits on longevity and health. Well known for their powerful antioxidant capabilities, berries have been found to have direct impacts on the brain. Fennel Aiding digestive disorders. Herbs like fennel are considered carminatives, as they are known to contain oils that help to relax the stomach and help to stimulate the digestive system. This, in turn, aids in preventing the formation of gas. Fennel has long been used to relieve bloating, gas discomfort and flatulence, as well as to stimulate the appetite. High fiber content. Fennel is rich in fiber, which is known to help decrease elevated cholesterol levels as well as to reduce the risk of colon cancer. Folate and potassium. Fennel is an excellent source of folate, which is essential for transforming harmful homocysteine molecules into benign molecules. High levels of homocysteine are known to cause direct damage to blood vessel walls, contributing to strokes and heart attacks. Fennel also contains potassium, which helps to lower high blood pressure, further lessening stroke and heart attack risk.

Fresh Citrus Juices Oranges, tangerines, lemons and limes may be the first fruits you think of when hearing the word citrus. But this family of fruits contain several varieties including pummelos, ugli fruits, kumquats and more, each with their own unique blend of nutrients. Incorporating citrus fruits into your diet will boost more than just your vitamin C load, which in and of itself provides numerous benefits, such as increased collagen production, antioxidant protection and anti-inflammatory activity Rather than spend money on the nutrientpoor processed variety, you can easily juice your own blends at home. Citrus fruits add flavor to vegetable juices and since a little goes a long way, you won’t break that bank when purchasing your ingredients.

Ginger / Galangal Scientifically known as Alpinia galanga, galangal is also sometimes called Siamese ginger, blue ginger or Chinese ginger. Most everyone is familiar with the distinctive, spicy-sweet taste of ginger, but galangal remains a mystery to many of us who are not versed in Southeast Asian cuisine. Throughout Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, however, galangal has been used for both culinary and medicinal purposes for centuries. Like ginger, galangal has anti-inflammatory properties, and may be beneficial to those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory, chronic illnesses. It is traditionally used to soothe stomach pain, stimulate appetite, curb nausea, motion sickness and diarrhea, and ease the pain of ulcers. Galangal contains a range of disease-fighting antioxidants, including flavonoids and vitamins A and C, and is a great source of iron.

Teas

Rooibos ( Red Bush)

Green Tea

White Tea

Rooibos Tea, originating near Cape Town in South Africa, can help relieve diarrhea and cramps, ease nausea, stomach upset and indigestion, in addition to reducing inflammation and allergies. Rooibos Tea is packed with Polyphenol Antioxidants which help fight free radicals which help slow the aging process, reverse visible signs of aging and protect against disease. These compounds also offer nerve relaxing properties that may even reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s also believed to alleviate colic in babies, and as it’s completely caffeine free, it’s also safe for them to consume.

Green Tea Green tea leaves come from the Camellia sinensis plant, the same plant from which black teas are derived. The difference is, when the leaves are harvested, those that go towards making green tea are only withered and steamed, while black tea leaves are crushed and fermented to make various varieties, such as Earl Gray and Oolong. Among the benefits are potent antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties. Recent research has added further weight to the cancer-combating potential of green tea.

White Tea White teas are unfermented and made from very young tea leaves or buds that are steamed immediately after harvest, they naturally contain higher concentrations of catechins than other teas and also have more powerful anti-cancer properties as compares to more processed teas. White tea has also been shown to have greater antibacterial effects to help the immune system battle off infection as well as to prevent plaque by reducing the numbers of bacteria in the mouth. It also contains more of the amino acid L-theanine which provides a relaxing effect, helping to reduce stress, which in turn helps to strengthen the immune system even more.

There are definitely a wider selection of healthy Fruits and Vegetables, too many to mention on a few pages. Always make sure when buying any natural products, salads , veggies, frozen or dried products that the plants trees ha¬¬ve not been treated with pesticides and are grown organically.

Rugby World Cup 2015 To mark 500 days to go until Rugby World Cup 2015, tournament organisers England Rugby 2015 have today revealed plans for a Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour which will see the iconic Webb Ellis Cup travel to 15 countries across five continents as part of an international celebration of rugby. xxxx The tour, which is being delivered in partnership with Land Rover and DHL – two long supporters of the Game and Worldwide Partners of next year’s showpiece tournament – will visit a mixture of established and developing rugby nations in the build-up to RWC 2015. Fans across the world can already purchase tickets for Rugby’s biggest event through locally appointed Official Travel Agents.

Probably still in contention as this magazine hits the printer are : Crusaders: With a couple of home games to play, the Christchurch franchise is ideally placed to launch a bid for its eighth Super title, especially with Richie McCaw back and looking like he's never been away. Brumbies: The front-running Australian side have an exciting and confident Tahs snapping at their heels. The Brumbies will need to regroup a big loss to the Crusaders. Chiefs: They've struggled with injuries to key players (most notably Aaron Cruden), which in turn has significantly impacted the team's normally reliable winning form. The Chiefs could find themselves in big, big trouble. Sharks: The competition leaders have been convincing in South Africa, but their form on the road is less reliable. If the Sharks do get one over the Brumbies, they'll be hard to dislodge from the top spot come season's end.

Super Rugby round 12 done, seven to go. We’ve

seen enough of the teams now that we can make midseason(ish) report cards. But first, some observations: this year's Super Rugby has arguably been the most competitive since the competition's inception in 1996. The minnows have risen and have wreaked havoc on pre-season predictions. The Western Force and Reds' diametrically opposed positions on the table say it all. The Stormers, a team with a supposed impregnable defence long overdue for a maiden title, are in 14th place. And in the NZ conference, only a bonus point win separates 2014 champs the Chiefs from the last-placed Kiwi side the Blues. APPROACH MAGAZINE

The Force, third in the Australian conference, will do it tough on the run home, but it's foolish to underestimate them. 49

GOLF & SPORT

An argument that the game, in its present form, is unsafe for youngsters overlooks the core values of teamwork, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship it gives to those who play it. Anyone who saw England versus Ireland now knows what a properly intense, toplevel game of rugby union looks like. Fierce, physical, lung-bursting, aggressive and bruising, not to mention fast, skilful and athletic. It is impossible to understate just how fit and committed the players have to be simply to survive until half-time, let alone the end of the xxxxx season.

for the best part of 40 years he could count the bad injuries he had personally witnessed on a rugby field on the fingers of one, admittedly slightly gnarled, hand. He had seen worse on cricket fields and as for winter sports, no one seemed to turn axxx hair watching all those skiers, snowboarders and skaters crashing in Sochi. If there is a concern in rugby, he suggested to focus on those kids aged between 15 and 17 playing with youths slightly older, bigger and stronger than themselves. Some of them – when you factor in school, club and representative commitments, not to mention playing other sports and going to the gym – do appear to be placing an awful lot of strain on their developing bodies and already have the medical notes to prove it. With the average participant getting bigger and faster, xxx the more upright nature of the hits in the modern game is also a definite issue. It is no coincidence that concussion is now a higher-profile issue than it used to be.

It is true that young bones and joints can take a pounding on a rugby pitch. A former player, speaking as someone who suffered over half a dozen shoulder dislocations – which eventually required two operations – two broken wrists, a broken ankle, torn knee ligaments and plenty of damaged pride prior to a premature retirement at the age of 19, I felt vaguely qualified on the subject. My final game, on a windswept park pitch in Edinburgh, ended predictably with yet another fracture. As the opposition were a bunch of medical students, I decided to ask for an early diagnosis before making the grim trudge to the Western General to have the bone reset. They went into a quick huddle before their captain emerged, looking slightly shame-faced. "Sorry, xxxxxxxxxxx mate," he muttered. "None of us have done that part of the course yet."

Rugby, helps to build character as well as fitness, is among the best of bonding activities and fosters a set of core values – teamwork, xxxxxx and sportsmanship – respect, enjoyment, discipline which will benefit its participants for life. The pleasure it gives to millions is indisputable, the sense of selfworth and belonging it gives kids of all backgrounds invaluable. The occasional fractured bone should not render all that invalid.

Although this is an unscientific survey but in watching and playing age-grade rugby up and down the country xxxx APPROACH MAGAZINE

A Day in the Life of a

PRO CADDY A TRIBUTE TO TED SCOT – BUBBA WATSON`S CADDY I

n golf, a caddy or caddie is the person who carries a player’s bag and clubs, and gives insightful advice and moral support. A good caddy is aware of the challenges and obstacles of the golf course being played, along with the best strategy in playing it. This includes knowing overall yardage, pin placements and club selection.

“We’re like brothers, brothers that Mom and Dad left alone -and they left him in charge,” Scott says. “Sometimes I just want to punch him, but I love him. And I know he feels the same about me. But don’t let anybody else say anything bad about us. We’ll go into battle for each other.” Watson is an emotional golfer, and the presence of a calming influence alongside him has proved invaluable in his recent successes. Scott is an integral part of what Watson calls “Team Bubba,” and he’s been credited with bringing a new focus to one of the most naturally gifted golfers on the Tour.

Ted Scott - The fresh-faced 37-year old is one of the lucky ones. Caddies for the top PGA Tour golfers can bring home as much as $250,000 a year in the modern game, traveling the world and taking a cut of everything their player earns along the way.

“It takes a long time to learn someone. And that’s the art of caddying -- you have to learn your player,” Scott says. All in all it sounds like a pretty good life being a PGA Tour caddy -- especially when your player is as relaxed a character, and as a good a player as Watson is.

“It’s changed a lot since I’ve been out here,” says Scott, who took his first job in 2000, and counts 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger among his former employers. “There used to be guys in the parking lot at tournaments, and you could pick up a bag. Now I’ve got friends who are great caddies and can’t get a job. You can earn a living out here, that’s what’s made the difference.”

Scott is one of the lucky ones, and he knows it. But while he and Watson have a friendship that’s the envy of his fellow caddies, he’s never in any doubt of who wears the pants in their relationship.

Scott’s player is the big-hitting Watson, and the 32-year-old American is doing better than most. He’s already won two PGA Tour tournaments in 2011, cashing checks for over $3 million and handing around 10% to his good friend on the bag.

“We love to hang out, and have a lot of common interests. But we knock heads too, and he’s in charge so I always have to submit,” he says.

The pair started working together in 2006, when their mutual friend Ben Crane introduced them at the PGA Tour’s weekly Bible study group. Watson agreed to give him a two-week trial and they’ve been together ever since.

nita Hollis has taken over as the new owner of the Insight English language school. As the new principal, Anita is excited about the future of teaching English in Hua Hin and Cha- Am “Whether it is schools or the corporate sector, the importance of learning English cannot be underestimated, and we at Insight are only too pleased to provide affordable tuition in small groups or on a one to one basis, taught by professional native English speaking teachers”.

Anita Hollis Insight maintains a strong corporate presence with approximately 40% of their business coming from large and small companies who have a need for all types of English, ranging from a basic need to be able to communicate with foreigners in general situations through to advanced business skills such as presentation and negotiation.

The English language will become even more important as Thailand becomes a member of the Asean Block.

We also offer Student courses which include English development, IELTS, TOEFL or TOEIC preparation for university, or to develop overall confidence in speaking English. The Hua Hin and Cha Am schools offer the same quality of instruction, service and facilities as at Insight English Bangkok as well as specializing in English for the hospitality industry. We have also established English programs for children from as young as 4 years old. “Building a strong foundation at an early age, means that children grow up with the view that English is a language they can learn easily as opposed to being a chore”. Finally we offer assistance to overseas students who wish to study Thai or English, in obtaining education visa packages that allows them to study in this beautiful country for up to 3 years.

Insight English was established in September 2004 with the aim of providing the highest possible standard of English language tuition. Insight initially began as a corporate training company offering short courses, seminars and workshops in Bangkok and after success in this field Insight opened its first branch on the 3rd floor of CP Tower on Silom Road. This was a relatively small school and was soon replaced with larger premises on the same floor of CP Tower. APPROACH MAGAZINE

KIDS & EDUCATION

Are Kids watching too much TV ?

Is your child glued to the TV for hours every day? Do they rush home from school to play your favorite video game? A lot of kids are hooked on TV and video games. Most kids get more than seven hours of screen time gaming or watching TV every day! Too much TV and too many video games can be bad for their health. Here are five important reasons why TV and video game time isn't that good for you, and why you may want to start watching and playing less. Watching commercials for soda, candy, and fast food on TV can make them want to eat foods that aren't good for them. These unhealthy foods also make you gain weight. Is screen time taking over their life? Don't let them watch TV or play video games for more than two hours a day max.. Try not to let them eat while they watch TV. Zoning Out in Front of the TV Can Make Kids Sad Too much TV can make them sad. The more TV they watch, the more depressedthey could feel. TV takes away from time they can spend being active with their friends and family. It can make them feel lonely. Do they sometimes cry during or after TV shows.

Watch shows that make them feel happy and good about themselves and are fun.

ate last year the story book ‘The Magic Tree Doctor’, by Neil Ray was published with clear environmental messages woven into the story. To help illustrate the book children from the British Education Children’s Centre (BECC) in Hua Hin created drawings of the tree characters which included Nosy Tree, Clever Tree and Grumpy Tree. It was a great success and they were recently invited by Innovative Eco Management to take a look at the whole process of mango production. The company were major sponsors of the book, and are the owners of a sizable plantation in Pranburi. Leading the group around the orchard was CEO Astrid Bakker who gave a step by step account of how the mango went from the tree to the table. Teacher Nancy Williamson led the party along with manager Khun Yui and assistant Khun Joy. It was a fascinating field trip which was full of purpose – how do you save water on an orchard of over 1,000 trees?, how do the mangos get picked?, what makes a good mango?… the answers were given by Astrid and plantation manager Arthur in an interesting but fun way. ‘Water, Astrid said ‘is such a precious commodity and we have to find ways of saving it - to help with this aim IEM often uses a special irrigation pipe which sweats water into the ground, rather than using sprinklers’.

In the market area, IEM re distribute to places such as Vietnam, Malaysia and China. So the company not only grows its own mangos but also provides a market service to farmers and buyers. The trip ended with information about how bugs are dealt with and how the fruit is selected by size, weight and colour. As Astrid explained; ‘not all markets are the same, some countries like a sweet mango, whereas others prefer a more sour fruit’. It was an ideal way for children to learn about water conservation and irrigation in a practical way, and understand the effect of good eco management can have on our food chain. But the main message was clear in that water has to be used effectively and efficiently.

The BECC School, situated in the Patravadi Vic Hua Hin park on Petchkasem road, just outside Hua Hin going South, also has a website: www.thebecc.com The full colour book ‘The Magic Tree Doctor’ is available by mail order for 119 Baht. Order by email: neil.ray@hotmail.com

he condominium index, which increased modestly by 3.76% (1.82% inflation-adjusted), is actually a more relevant index, since condominiums are what Bangkok people tend to live in. The price index for townhouses rose by 6.17% (4.18% inflation-adjusted) to end-Q1 2014, and the residential land price index surged by 7.04% (5.04% inflationadjusted) Property demand has been soaring. The value of land and building transactions surged by 16.5% in 2013 to THB991.3 billion (US$30.6 billion), according to the Department of Land, Ministry of Interior. Residential building licenses have risen by 12.8% in 2013 to 84,023 units, according to the Department of Land. Condominium registrations surged 25.1% to 102,200 units. New houses in Bangkok Metropolis, including apartments and condominiums, self-built houses, and housing projects, also increased by 5.6% to 131,954 units in 2013. However so far, the Government Housing Bank (GHB) interest rate has been constant since May 2009, at 6.75%. The BOT has released new rules in response to public anxiety that Thailand faces the risk of another property bubble, particularly in the condominium sector. The BOT has implemented some new rules. The BOT’s new rules take effect in 2011 and 2012. For condominium units under THB 10 million (USD330,300), bank loans must be limited to 90% of a home’s value, from January 1 2011 Low-rise housing loan-to-value (LTV) ratios are capped at 95%, starting January 1, 2012. For larger loans, banks must increase risk weighting to between 75% and 100% of the loan value. At present, the risk weighting is set by the BOT for the property sector at 35%. Real demand, exists for low-rise housing below THB 3 million (USD99,100), which accounts for 70% of the market, according to Housing Business Association (HBA) president Issara Boonyong. The remaining 30% of demand comes from investors, who buy homes to generate rental income. The 23,000 registrations of new condo units in the first nine months of 2010, compares with 29,000 registrations of lowrise residences, adds Boonyong. Demand for residential projects is expected to grow by at least 7% in 2011 despite the BOT´s measures to control the property sector, says Thongma Vijitphongpun, chief executive officer of Pruksa Real Estate!

The Giant Bookworm Part Two Amelia

A

s far as I am concerned, Reckwood Village is the precipice that civilisation hangs from. When the pedlar dropped me off at Reckwood’s orphanage I was lucky to find just two silver-linings. The first was that Reckwood was the kind of place where I could believe the unbelievable existed. A place where I could believe a fairy might grant me a wish or a giant may just eat Madame Cole, our horrid school teacher. In Reckwood, I was more abandoned than I had ever been in my whole life and whilst I was longing to be somewhere else, anywhere else, my imagination was my only escape. The second silver-lining was only silver if you looked at it right: I got to sleep in the library. The orphanage only accepted me because Reckwood was where my father was from. They had no beds left and were going to make me squash up next to a girl named Orthella who had bad breath, which is probably the only reason she wasn’t already sharing a bed with one of the other girls. Instead, I volunteered to sleep on the library floor. The carpet was dying and probably full of bacteria, but it was quiet – very rarely did anyone else come to browse the dusty shelves – and stories help set my imagination loose too.

I had spent many nights falling asleep with a book on my lap cocooned in dreams of whimsy. I was always consciously aware that my dreams weren’t real. I knew if I saw a raspberry cake I knew I couldn’t allow myself to try a piece and feel the disappointment of tasting stuffy air. I knew if I dreamt of my parents that I wouldn’t be able to wrap my arms around them and smell Mama’s faint petitgrain perfume or feel Daddy’s callused hands. So when, that night, I smelt a stench worse than Orthella’s breath and Madame Cole’s underarms combined I knew that something was happening outside of my dreams. I tore myself from my cocoon and opened my eyes, sitting up slowly. I looked at the books, my makeshift bed – nothing was out of the ordinary. Then I noticed one of the library walls was missing and in its place was a gigantic hairy arm. I raised my eyes to meet wide giant sized eyeballs. “I knew giants were real.” I whispered. On hearing myself I snapped wide awake. How in all the seven-hundred and twelve villages…? “Will the other villagers come for you?” The giant bellowed in a coarse voice. “I doubt it. I doubt they’ll even know that I’m gone.” I clapped my hand over my mouth before I could say anymore. When I’m taken by surprise I blurt the absolute truth and don’t leave out one detail, including the bits best kept to oneself. Once, Madame Cole asked me during a geometry lesson what I was thinking about because it clearly wasn’t how to calculate the circumference of a circle. I told her, “About what kind of magic a leprechaun could do.” I got a whipping for that. The giant sat down on a massive stool, three times as tall as the two storey orphanage. “I guess I’m past convincing you this is a dream now. So I’ll have to think of something else to do with you.” Like, eat me? I wondered. My heart thundered. I could almost feel my rib bones snapping under the pressure. “We better get introduced, I’m Sal Tangit.” “A-Amelia,” My teeth were chattering, that happens when I’m scared. “My name is Amelia.” To Be Continued… By Zara Adcock Can’t Wait Until The Next Segment? Young Adult Fantasy Novels vs. Their Subsequent Films by Zara Adcock

Nine times out of ten the book is better than the film. In fantasy novels, readers immerse themselves in the world created by the author/s. In their subsequent films, the disappointing factors are often plot changes and the lack of explanations that are provided in the book. Although nine times out of ten I will recommend you read the book first, in these cases, both are great works of art, wonder and quality entertainment.

PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS BY RICK RIORDAN Summary: When Zeus’ lightning bolt is stolen, Percy Jackson is the main suspect. Made to confront his true identity, Percy learns he is a demi-god and the son of Poseidon. Now Percy and his friends must go on a quest to find the lightning bolt before the wrath of Zeus is known to the world. But this quest is just the beginning… Sub Genres: Urban Fantasy, Adventure, Mystery, Romance Themes: Friendships, Parental Relationships, Self-confidence, Mythology, Family Books: * * * * (4 out of 5 stars) Films: * * * * (4 out of 5 stars) The Percy Jackson films not only make sense, but are funny and adventurous stories stooped in Greek mythology yet set in the 21st century. My only complaint is that the actors could be more convincing. The stories, aimed at young male adults, are told in a relatable voice and are even more funny and adventurous.

THE THEIF LORD BY CORNELIA FUNKE Summary: Two orphaned brothers escape from their cold-hearted Uncle and Aunt to Venice – the magical place of their mother’s dreams – where they are taken in by a group of young thieves living in an abandoned movie theatre, and lead by the heroic ‘Thief Lord’. Sub Genres: Adventure, Mystery, Crime, Urban Fantasy Themes: Home, Love, Friendship, Moral Ethics, Mystery Books: * * * * * (5 out of 5 stars) Films: * * * * (4 out of 5 stars) This story doesn’t immediately reveal its fantasy element – but there is something distinctly mystic about Venice, Italy, through the eyes of the homeless children. The book is a marvellous page turner and the film is a delight. Full of intrigue, wonder, and adventure, The Thief Lord is one of my favourite novels of all time.

HIS DARK MATERIALS/ THE GOLDEN COMPASS BY PHILIP PULLMAN Summary: Lyra and her daemon, Pan, live like rebels in Jordan College until bewitching Mrs Coulter asks Lyra to accompany her whilst travelling. Out into the world Lyra and Pan are struck into the heart of a dangerous conspiracy, involving kidnappers, the elusive ‘Dust’ and other universes only a stone’s throw away. Sub Genres: Dark Fantasy, Adventure, Mystery Themes: Moral Ethics, Courage, Parental Relationships Books: * * * * (4 out of 5 stars) Films: * * * * (4 out of 5 stars) I saw the film (The Golden Compass) first which I later learnt destroyed the possibility of movies being made from the rest of the trilogy. But if you read Philip Pullman’s phenomenal masterpiece then you may wonder how the film industry would have taken the complex worlds and plot created to the screen. In this case, I prefer the film which I’ve always found to be literally wonderful, adventurous, and utterly brilliant. The books on the other hand, whilst incredibly awesome, are quite heavy with a bittersweet ending.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA BY STEPHENIE MEYER Summary: Unusual 17 year old Bella Swan moves to Forks, Washington (USA) to live with her father where she falls in love with Edward Cullen, an unusual vampire. To be together Bella and Edward have to overcome a series of obstacles including supernatural threats, heartbreak and the law. Sub Genres: Urban Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Romance, Adventure, Action, Mystery, Crime/Murder Themes: Family, Love, Childhood/Adolescence/Adulthood, Individuality, Small Town Life Books: * * * * * (5 out of 5 stars) Films: * * * * (4 out of 5 stars) The films’ action, soundtrack, imagery, and humour combined make excellent viewing. However, unless you have read the books first, the films will leave a lot of questions unanswered. The novels are brilliant, sparkling gems. Don’t be put off by the vampire theme either – these vampires are a well-crafted, unforgettable and a charming surprise.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA BY C. S. LEWIS Summary: Narnia, the world visitable via magic rings, through wardrobes, and paintings, awaits those lucky enough to stumble upon it. Children of prophecies learn Narnia’s secrets and save the Narnians’ way of life from murderous and charming villains. Sub Genres: Adventure, War Time England Themes: Honour, Adolescence, Moral Ethics, Trust Books: * * * * (4 out of 5 stars) Films: * * * * (4 out of 5 stars) The stories are detailed, long and meant for older readers. The films are lively adventures and highly enjoyable despite the lengthy battles. Narnia is a treasured classic all tend to love.
