omplaining about not enough water, mother Earth answered all wishes by bathing us in rain, floods and storms. Man-made, man caused we proclaim. Not so dear readers. This Earth has had changes in temperature all through pre-human and human history. Of course our habitat misbehaviour does not favour nature´s stability. Our trusted but deceiving politicians do not contribute through legislation, law enforcement or veto, deforestation which is only greed and personal gain, enrichment. What is happening in Brazil, Africa and other developing regions is inexcusable. Who are we to complain? Any other extra natural happening has a lot to do with our journey through space, our proximity to the sun and other heavenly bodies. Car emissions have gone down but industrial emissions, especially in the USA are still up and increasing. SU-Vehicles are undoubtedly popular but for some of us unaffordable desires. Wouldn´t we all want a baby Hummer? A Hummer H1 will set you back up to US$ 240.000. The lower line H3 – US$ 90.000 – this plus 287% import taxes can buy yourself a nice Villa with Pool, two SUV´s and a luxury Scooter. This month we are dedicating the motoring section to motor bikes and luxury scooters with an anniversary on the everlasting, unbeatable VW beetle. Slowly but surely I am finding my usual style back again and keep troubling you with my “heel to the branch”, an old Dutch saying, writing. By the way we all now celebrate a new king in Belgium and a prince born in Great Britain. There are still a lot of unfortunate kids all over the world. With Hotelier organisations such as SKAL and private Charity such as Jungle Aid, they do their best to contribute to some relief and help to the less fortunate. There are indeed people in Hua Hin who dedicate their weekends to alleviation of suffering among refugees over the Hills. Nurses and doctors, teachers and other volunteers, who risk being arrested for “working” without a valid permit to help the needy. Money, a lot of money is needed to help kids and their parents as well. We count on all of you. See the article on denied education. Gives you an idea on human rights. Please help. Yours truly, GMoss

ON AUGUST 7, THE SWISS POPULATION OF HUA HIN CELEBRATES

T

THE SWISS NATIONAL DAY AT THE HILTON HUA HIN. he Swiss National Day (German: Schweizer Bundesfeier; French: Fête nationale Suisse; Italian: Festa Nazionale Svizzera; Romansh: Fiasta Naziunala Svizra) is the national holiday of Switzerland, set on August 1. It is an official national holiday since 1994, although the day had been suggested for the celebration of the foundation of the Swiss Confederacy as early as 1889. The date is inspired by the date of the Federal Charter of 1291, placed in “early August” (primo incipiente mense Augusto). The document is one of several dozen pacts attested for the territory of Switzerland in the period of the mid-13th to mid-14th century. The foundation of the Old Swiss Confederacy had been mostly associated with the Bund of Brunnen of 1315, or with the Rütlischwur, dated to 1307 by Aegidius Tschudi. 1 August is today celebrated each year with paper lantern parades, bonfires, hanging strings of Swiss flags and fireworks.

At 122 grams (4.3 ounces), the One Mini is 21 grams (0.74 ounce) lighter than the HTC One. NapAnywhere

Food Huggers

NapAnywhere is a flat disc-shaped pillow consisting of a flexible endoskeleton layered with foam padding and upholstered in fabric. One side of the disc is warm to the touch, while the other side is cool, so you can choose whichever one’s more comfortable to rest your head on. During use, simply fold the disc by the ridge: the top part will serve as a cantilevered shelf you can lean your head into, the central part will push against your neck, and the bottom will rest on your shoulder distributing the weight. The result is a fully-supported head with zero strain on the neck while you spend the duration of that three-hour flight in peaceful slumber. www.napanywhere.net

The Food Hugger comes in four different sizes, so it can fit varying sizes of fruits and vegetables. Since it’s made from stretchy silicone, even slightly larger objects and oblong-shaped items can be sealed in with a snug fit to boot. Not only will it lock in freshness, it will lock in order, too, so the fridge doesn’t have to smell like onions when you put in that leftover half for use in tomorrow’s dish. According to the product page, the Food Hugger can keep fruits and veggies fresh for up to a week if combined with proper refrigeration, so it’s downright awesome. They’re compact, too, so they shouldn’t take up much extra space in a crowded fridge. www.foodhuggers.com

THE MOST FAMOUS JAZZ PERFORMERS OF EUROPE.

J

azz music is unfortunately mostly associated with USA musicians. The roots of Jazz are certainly in the States brought by the African slaves working in the cotton fields. However Europe has a rich tradition of Jazz as well for more than 70 years and there is an enormous potential of highly talented European jazz musicians equalling or even outperforming US artists. Since decades there are well-known Jazz schools in Europe and many proponents have helped to determine the current jazz. Listed are an international group of musicians which are also respected in the USA and have brought valuable contribution to the cultural life in America. Many of these musicians I know personally and I have organized concerts for them and have long term friendships.

Top European Jazz Performers Among Others: Hein van de Geyn

Ferdinand Porsche

(3 September 1875 – 30 January 1951) was an AustrianGerman automotive engineer and honorary Doctor of Engineering. He was best known for creating the first hybrid vehicle (gasoline-electric), the Volkswagen Beetle, and the Mercedes-Benz SS/SSK, as well as the first of many Porsche automobiles.

In the 1950s, the Beetle was more comfortable and powerful than most European small cars, having been designed for sustained high speed on the Autobahn.

T

he Volkswagen Beetle, officially called the Volkswagen Type 1 or informally the Volkswagen Bug, is an economy car produced by the German auto maker Volkswagen from 1938 until 2003. The car was conceived as a cheap simple car and was designed by Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. With over 21 million manufactured (21,529,464) with an aircooled, rear-engine and rear-wheel drive configuration, the Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single design platform, worldwide. Although designed in the 1930s, the Beetle was only produced in significant numbers from 1945 on when the model was internally designated the Volkswagen Type 1, and marketed simply as the “Volkswagen”. Later models were designated VW 1200, 1300, 1500, 1302 or 1303, the former three indicating engine displacement. The model became widely known in its home country as the Käfer (German for “beetle”) and was later marketed as such in Germany and as the Volkswagen Beetle in other countries. In the 1950s, the Beetle was more comfortable and powerful than most European small cars, having been designed for sustained high speed on the Autobahn.

It remained a top seller in the U.S., owing much of its success to high build-quality and innovative advertising. The Beetle had marked a significant trend led by Volkswagen, copied by Fiat, Renault and BMW whereby the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout had increased from 2.6 percent of continental Western Europe’s car production in 1946 to 26.6 percent in 1956. In 1974, Volkswagen’s own front-wheel drive Golf model succeeded the Beetle. In 1994,Volkswagen unveiled the Concept One, a “retro”themed concept car with a resemblance to the original Beetle, and in 1998 introduced the “New Beetle”, built on the Golf platform with styling recalling the original Type 1. Furthermore in a 1999 international poll for the world’s most influential car of the 20th century, the Type 1 came fourth, after the Ford Model T, the Mini, and the Citroën DS. In Thailand, VW Beetles are traded between THB 200,000 for fair conditioned car to THB 500.000 for an immaculate version. There are VW clubs , meetings and races at the Birra Circuit in Pattaya. There is a VW hotel at the River Kwai region.

B

aan Silapin, or Artists’ Home, is the brainchild of Thawee Kaesangarm, chairman of Hua Hin’s artist club. This gallery complex exhibits works from Thailand’s artists all year round as well as offering various art courses for children and those who wish to take their love of art to the next level. Set in a picturesque location overlooking Hin Lek Fai Moutain, Baan Silapin complex contains an art gallery, art studios, classrooms and mud house displaying ceramic art and sculptures. There’s nothing formal or rigid about this place. Its founding philosophy, as a gathering and work place for local artists, fills Baan Silapin with warmth and liveliness. Spread over four acres in a shady grove along the hills to the west of central Hua Hin, this rabbit’s warren of studio spaces and galleries is the seaside town’s original arts centre. It’s the spot that artist Tawee Kesa-ngam picked in 1989, when he decided to exchange the fastpaced lifestyle of Bangkok for something a little more relaxed.

APPROACH MAGAZINE

19

Today this artist’s collective is also the base for the Hua Hin Artists’ Group and frequently hosts special exhibitions and performance events. Classes in craft, drawing, and oil and watercolours, are designed to keep children busy while you browse the shaded pavilions, chatting with the artists on hand. Choose from etchings of serene Buddhas on wood, inspirational landscapes and portraits in an array of mediums, metal sculptures of Reubenesque women, and terracotta figurines. The collection of studios and galleries found here highlight the works of many local artists, many of whom have opted out of Bangkok’s frenzied art world for the much quieter one in Hua Hin. In addition to viewing stunning works in a variety of mediums, visitors can watch artists in action or even take up a class conducted by prominent Thai artists. Classes are conducted almost every day. Baan Silapin is open from 10 am to 5 pm every day except Monday. The Village is located on the way out of Hua Hin towards Pala U waterfall, just over the hill past Hutsadin Elephant Village and the Yellow Balloon , down the hill on the right hand side.

Chalok Baan Khao, to the south of the island is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative for those wishing to escape the crowds. A multitude of beautiful granite boulders, which nestle both in the forests and on the beaches of Koh Tao, attract a growing number of climbers. Whether you’re an adventure seeker looking to scuba dive or more of a “land lubber” just looking to top up your sun tan, “The Rock” offers the best of both worlds. Koh Tao is blessed with some of Thailand’s most spectacular beaches and bays. Despite it’s popularity among divers, the waters surrounding the island remain crystal clear and ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

Lomprayah Bus Company offer services from Hua Hin to Chumphon (mainland) and further to to Koh Tao and the surrounding islands for about THB 1900 two ways. They start off at the Hua Hin Clock Tower opposite the Hua Hin Central Temple. The economy of the island is almost exclusively centred around tourism, especially scuba diving.

Koh Tao is blessed with some of Thailand’s most spectacular beaches and bays.

Koh Tao was named by its first settlers after the island’s turtlelike geographic shape. Coincidentally, the island is an important breeding ground for Hawksbill turtles and Green turtles. Development of tourism has negatively impacted the health of these grounds but a breeding programme organised in 2004 by the Royal Thai Navy and KT-DOC, a coalition of local scuba diving centres, has reintroduced hundreds of juvenile turtles to the island’s ecosystem.

OTOP SHOPS: LOCAL PRODUCTS STORES ONE TAMBON ONE PRODUCT – THE HUA HIN STORE.

O

TOP is a local entrepreneurship stimulus program designed by Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra during his 2001-2006 Thai Rak Thai government. The program aimed to support the locally made and marketed products of each Thai tambon (subdistrict). Drawing its inspiration from Japan’s successful One Village One Product (OVOP) program, the OTOP program encourages village communities to improve the local products’ quality and marketing, selecting one superior product from each tambon to receive formal branding as its “starred OTOP product”. It provides both a local and national stage to the promote these products.

OTOP products include a large array of local products, including traditional handicrafts, cotton and silk garments, pottery, fashion accessories, household items and food. After a military junta overthrew Thaksin’s government in 2006 following an election cancelled for irregularities, the OTOP program was cancelled. However, it was soon revived and rebranded. Today there are 36,000 OTOP groups on the country, each having between 30 to 3,000 members. Sakda Siridechakul, president of Chiang Mai’s OTOP association noted, “OTOP has helped spread income to many people in the villages. It has allowed people producing handicrafts to feel they are part of the global economy.” The latest OTOP store was inaugurated in Hua Hin earlier this year in a new building on the corner od Petschkasem road diagonally opposite the municipality.

Different regions are noted for specific types of products. Highlights of products from different regions in Thailand include: NORTHERN THAILAND Superb handicrafts, particularly carved wood, silverware, speciality paper products, ceramics, bamboo baskets, cotton fabrics and silver jewellery from hill-tribe minorities. NORTHEASTERN THAILAND OR I-SAN It is a tradition in the Northeast for villagers to make two sets of clothes - everyday work clothes and high quality silk items created with outstanding skill for special occasions like weddings and festivals. These latter items are being selected as OTOP products. Silk and cotton fabrics, especially tie-dyed mudmee designs. The most famous are Lai Khid and Phrae Wa silks. Other items include reed mats, baskets woven from water hyacinth and triangular pillows.

CENTRAL THAILAND Traditional handicrafts of bamboo and bai lan, great earthen pots, Dan Kwian and Koh Kred pottery and terra cotta items. EASTERN THAILAND Famed for its fruits, fresh and processed, as well as bamboo and rattan baskets, reed mats and mudmee fabrics.

SOUTHERN THAILAND Batik fabrics, woven products from lipao, bulrush and panan pandanus, mother-of-pearl inlays and carved wood products.

While the OTOP project aims to increase village incomes, the government is also offering a choice -- to go into OTOP production full time with plenty of government assistance. Major government agencies provide support: the Interior Ministry’s Department of Community Development works directly with the villages to fine tune their products; the Industry’s Ministry’s Department of Industrial Promotion plays a key role in product development, skills training and quality control; the DEP’s Product Development Centre employs teams of designers to work with villagers to create marketable designs and packages for their products. Oil Reserves & Climate Change by GMoss ACCORDING TO

LEADING

SCIENTISTS, THERE ARE

ALMOST UNLIMITED RESERVES OF OIL ON OUR PLANET. A REVELATION THAT CONTRADICTS THE FEARS OF RUNNING OUT OF FOSSIL FUEL.

A

This is the big enchilada, and as far as measuring oceans goes, everything changed in 2003 when we finally got the ARGO system, and that’s why it’s worth a closer look now. A single ARGO buoy (which measures ocean temperatures down to 2000m) has an uncertainty of about 0.1C. But using 3,000 buoys doesn’t make that uncertainty dramatically smaller when all that data is combined together. It would, if the 3,000 buoys were all measuring the same swimming pool.

ccording to leading scientists, there are almost unlimited reserves of oil on our planet. Not that this should encourage us to lean back and not worry about the

environment. We should be getting away from fossil fuels. However and unfortunately, our trustful and leading politicians are not really promoting or forcing legislation to pursue change. In a Californian oilfield alone, the owner claimed to have reserves for more than a century. His family has been drilling since 1910. One source of almost endless energy is our own sun. Everyone agrees: 90% of the energy in the Earth’s climate system is stored in the oceans. Rocks and sand don’t transmit the heat down, except at incredibly slow rates. The wil-o’-the-wisp-atmosphere hardly holds any energy. But water covers 70% of the surface, to an average depth of 3,700m, and it can store septillions of joules.

Here we go again: Scientists don’t have disclosed the accuracy of their experiment and the margin of error of their equipment. Just like in the 90´s with the Ice cores. Remember how they told use the world was warm based on their readings of the Ice that were measured and a rate over time of a 1000 years or so apart, while implying they were able to read the Ice cores like the pages of a book. Anyway isn’t the scientific method about evolving the theory based on the evidence and changing the theory to match the evidence as new evidence is discovered. The new evidence keeps showing over and over again that the original theory from the 70’s is wrong but that they just keep flogging the same dead horse. We need an investigation into the accuracy of all these reports from scientist that don’t evolve their theories to fit their own evidence but evolve their

Climate models say the Earth’s energy balance is out of whack, and therefore 90% of the extra energy trapped by increasing greenhouse gases is stored in the ocean. The oceans are warming (probably), but the extra energy found in the top 700m of the world’s oceans is not enough. The modellers argued the heat was hidden below, that from 700m-2,000m. Sceptics argue the missing energy was flung out to space. APPROACH MAGAZINE

findings to fit their warming beliefs. We need full disclosers not just the bottom line which they won’t us the hear to prove that we need to continue their funding. The climate hysteria created and perpetuated by Western government officials has opened Pandora’s Box. What looked to be a valuable policy tool for green protectionism is now threatening to unleash political chaos and economic misery on its creators and their nations.

Relax readers, life will go on, we are survivors, but please help mother earth to lessen our abundances.

Climate alarmism has turned into a Frankenstein monster that threatens to devour its own designers. I can’t see why Africa and other developing nations should be ready to refrain from demanding hundreds of billions of dollars in reparations given that green campaigners and US government officials claim that the West is liable for current and future climate disasters.” Al Gore likes to say that mankind puts 70 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every day.

APPROACH MAGAZINE

What he probably doesn’t know is that Mother Nature puts 24,000 times that amount of our main greenhouse gas—water vapor—into the atmosphere every day and removes about the same amount every day. While this does not ‘prove’ that global warming is not manmade, it shows that weather systems have by far the greatest control over the Earth’s greenhouse effect, which is dominated by water vapor and clouds.” About fifty million years ago…geological evidence indicates CO2 levels were several thousand ppm, much higher than now. And life flourished abundantly.” Relax readers, life will go on, we are survivor, but please help mother earth to lessen our abundances. TIPS

THAI LEGAL

Intercultural Marriages in Thailand THE ESSENTIALITY OF A LEGAL AGREEMENT BEFORE GETTING MARRIED.

W

e want you to understand the importance and need of a “prenuptial” agreement, because by the time you decide to “nuptial”, it’s probably too late. Prenuptial is an unfortunate name because it implies an agreement only to be used in case of marriage. We will explain why this is not necessarily true and for timing purposes, not even desirable. No matter how a relationship starts, there inevitably comes a point where two people may cease to see eye to eye and things could begin to fall apart. This is when it is realized that relationships were not made in heaven but right here on earth and they require work to be successful and not only wishful thinking. For those of you that accumulated property, now is the right time to do your homework. The Internet, usually a forum, is a good way to become familiar with these issues and read what has either happened to other people or to become aware of strategies to make sure whatever you want or can accept that will happen to your property follows that path. If you are considering having a relationship with a Thai woman, or may it be the other way around,Thai man, and you anticipate this partner to live with you (regardless of any ceremony or registration), it is very recommendable to consult an attorney now. If you have already been living with a Thai partner but have no children, you should consult with an attorney to discuss payment options and strategies. If you have been living with a Thai woman and have a baby (regardless of marriage registration), you should see an attorney to understand your payment obligations under Thai law. You definitely need to understand the legal and practical issues for property inside the country vs property held outside the country. Thai women and men are as loyal as foreign partners, however, when they are disappointed by a partner who thinks the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, they do not take it very well. Remember the old saying “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” and the Boy Scout Motto “Be Prepared”. If you are not prepared, you may have to pay for your mistakes.

Thailand’s Economic Outlook Projection second half 2013

THE THAI ECONOMY IS PROJECTED TO GROW 5,3 PERCENT IN 2013. Dr. Somchai Sajjapongse, the Director-General of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) announced Thailand’s economic projection as of March 2013 stating that “the Thai economy in 2013 is projected to grow at an annualized rate of 5.3 percent (or within a range of 4.8 - 5.8 percent), higher than the previous projected rate of 5.0 percent, due to a continued expansion in domestic demand. Private consumption continues to be the main driver of the economy, following higher employment and household income. The stimulus measures to generate income, e.g. the 300 Baht minimum wage policy and the rice mortgage scheme, have proved to be supportive of private consumption spending. Public consumption continues to expand, following the ongoing annual budget disbursements. Domestic investment is also expected to support economic growth this year. Private investment is expected to continue to grow at a high rate, due to the government’s stimulus and investment promotion measures. Public investment is expected to grow at a higher rate this year due to an acceleration in budget disbursements for government investment, including the investment in the water resource management plan (350 billion Baht). Meanwhile, external demand is anticipated to benefit exports this year. It is expected that the value of exports of goods and services will grow at a rate of 9.0 percent (or within a range of 8.0 - 11.0 percent) due to the global economic recovery, despite the appreciation of the Thai Baht. The Director-General of the FPO also added that “In composing the economic outlook projections, it is necessary to closely analyse

the following risk factors: fluctuations in the Thai Baht, the speed of economic recovery of Thailand’s major trading partners, especially given the issues of the public debt ceiling in the United States and the public debt problems in the Eurozone and the drought which may affect the agricultural sector and the income of people residing in rural areas.” Unemployment is expected to be 0.6 percent of the total labour force (or within a range of 0.5 - 0.7 percent). On external stability, the current account in 2013 is projected to record a surplus of USD 0.2 billion, accounting for 0.04 percent of GDP (or within a range of (-0.5) - (0.5) percent of GDP) as the estimated trade balance surplus drops slightly to USD 5.8 billion (or within a range of USD 4.8 - 6.8 billion). This is partially explained by accelerated import growth which is higher than export growth. according to Knight Frank CLEAR FALL AT LOCATIONS SUCH AS DUBAI AND DUBLIN.

The balance of HNWI’s (26%) are confident about their prospects of wealth creation in 2013. A positive number of advisors (34%) to the super rich believe that they will increase exposure to equities in the next year. 81% of HNWI’s will take a hands-on approach to their portfolio in 2013.

High-Net-Worth Individuals (HNWIs) are confident about their forthcoming prospects for wealth creation in 2013, according to the results of the Wealth Report Attitudes Survey of private bankers and wealth advisors representing around 15,000 clients worth in total almost Us$1tr. This year, HNWIs will increase their exposure to equities and commercial property, having favoured “safe-haven” investments such as government bonds and cash in 2012.

HNWI?

“In all regions in Australasia, around three quarters of private wealth advisors said that their clients are taking a more hands on approach”

With equities performing better than might have been expected in 2012, a growing number of HNWIs are keen to join the party. A net balance of 34% of wealth advisors said exposure to equities would increase, while 6% believed that cash on deposit would fall. Government bonds are also set to lose more of their lustre this year with 22% of advisors on balance expecting a cut in allocations. Investors, however, remain cautious and the taste for gold shows no sign of abating, with a balance of 18% respondents expecting their clients to invest more this year. “Our research suggests that there is a move from bonds and cash to equities, as the market recognizes the value in shares, but the shadow of Lehman Brothers and the events of 2008 still loom large in their memories,” explained Mr Shirley. “The results of our new Luxury Investment Index show that tangible asset classes such as art, classic cars and wine are growing in popularity as alternative safe-haven investments.” Another clear trend that emerges from the Attitudes Survey is the desire on the part of the wealthy to have more control over their investments. In all regions bar Australasia around three quarters of private wealth advisors said that their clients are taking a more hands on approach.

A High Net Working Individual is a person with a high net worth. In the western and primarily American private banking business, these individuals typically are defined as having investable finance in excess of US$1 million. Over 50% of respondents stated that their clients’ wealth had increased during 2012 with respondents in Asia, 59%, and Latin America, 75%, particularly bullish. This trend looks set to continue into this year with only 11% of respondents pessimistic about their clients’ wealth generation prospects in 2013 “With economic uncertainty here to stay, investors are reassessing their attitudes to risk in the search for greater returns,” explained Andrew Shirley, editor of the report. “Since 2007 many investors have focused on safe havens and tangible assets such as prime residential property in locations such as London. Property still looks set to remain a key component of HNWI investment portfolios, according to our research, but wealthy investors are increasingly prepared to look at locations such as Dublin and Dubai that fell significantly in value during the economic crisis.”

Teens and Parents reveal Driving Habits MAKING CARS SAFER WITH A VOICE CONTROLLED

M

PROCESSOR. ost drivers can probably come up with lots of ideas on how to keep the road safer. But putting one’s thoughts into action is never easy, according to results from a new survey conducted by Penn Schoen Berland and commissioned by Ford. The Survey shows risks differ between genders; teenage boys are more likely to engage in aggressive driving behaviours, while teenage girls are more likely to engage in distractions that are social in nature. 76 percent of teens and 83 percent of parents consider the dangers of distracted driving to be comparable to drunk driving, yet parents are 40 percent more likely to check their phones while driving than their teenage children. The survey polling 500 teen drivers and 500 parents in the US about their driving habits and perceptions revealed some surprising results.

DISTRACTED DRIVING Distracted driving is a growing concern for parents. The new survey shows teens engage in several distracting activities while behind the wheel, such as:

42 percent of teens say they turn up the radio so loud they can’t hear vehicles nearby.

BOYS VERSUS GIRLS

• 62 percent of teen drivers admit to being distracted by others in the car. • 61 percent of teens admit to eating or drinking while driving. • 42 percent of teens say they turn up the radio so loud they can’t hear vehicles nearby. • 51 percent of teens say they listen to an iPod or MP3 player. Ford’s Voice Control Processor

Teenage girls are perceived to be safer drivers than teenage boys by both teens and parents, according to the study. Other results show: • Boys are considered to be more aggressive drivers, according to 87 percent of girls, 78 percent of parents and 73 percent of boys. • Boys are considered more likely to drink and drive, according to 80 percent of girls, 72 percent of boys and 72 percent of parents. • Boys are considered more likely to speed, according to 81 percent of girls, 77 percent of boys and 75 percent of parents. • Girls are considered more likely to use their phones while driving, according to 81 percent of boys, 78 percent of girls and 67 percent of parents. The survey also found that despite reporting lower rates of the riskiest behaviours overall, parents are 40 percent more likely to check their phones while driving than their teenage children (28 percent of parents compared to 20 percent of teens).

Other than making and taking phone calls, SYNC can even retrieve text messages and read them aloud, including popular abbreviations and emoticons such as LOL (laugh out loud) and :-D (smiley big smile) when connected to a compatible phone.

A system developed by Ford and Microsoft is an award-winning hands-free technology called Ford Sync that allows drivers to control their mobile phone and digital media player via voice commands so that they can make calls or play their favourite music while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Using voice activation, the driver can also send a reply from a predetermined list of 15 responses while on the move. With Ford SYNC being offered in more vehicles sold in Thailand, we hope to continue helping Thai drivers keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.”

Now available in the all-new Ford Focus, Ford SYNC will be offered to small car drivers in the all-new Ford Fiesta which will be launched in Thailand this year.

& E D U C AT I O N MOVIE REVIEW Admission PG, 2013

P

ortia Nathan (played by Tina Fey) hasn’t raised children and is afraid of the task. Despite this, for 16 years, Portia has been working in the Admissions office for Princeton University and is now up for a big promotion. Traveling from school to school looking for applicants, Portia lands at the new Quest school, and finds her world slowly tipped upside down when the co-founder of Quest claims one of his students might just be the child she gave up for adoption when she was in college. Admission is based on the book by Jean Hanff Korelitz and studies how colleges are more often businesses than nurturing education centres. It talks about the ‘box’ children must fit to be offered a place at these schools and how admissions officers who know hardly anything about these children except for the papers they submit, decide on whether or not they are worthy of a ‘Princeton’ education.

Admission is a fascinating, touching story with heart and romance. There are many twists and turns and it ends unexpectedly, but oddly satisfying. Humorous and a worthy watch, Admission, shows that sometimes disaster isn’t as bad as we think. Admission is suitable for adults and mature adolescents. Admission is directed by Paul Weitz, screenplay written by Karen Croner. Also stars Paul Rudd and Gloria Rueben.

inger and songwriter, Emiliana Torrini was born and raised in Iceland and is half Icelandic, half Italian. At 7 years old, she joined a choir and sang soprano until she was 15 when she went to opera school. She recorded a few jazz and blues songs for her father’s 50th birthday which then became an album that sold 15,000 copies in Iceland and remained number one for many months Torrini played music in bars, restaurants and hotels all over Iceland and released 3 albums in Iceland. In 1999 she moved to England and released her first internationally distributed album, Love in the Time of Science. Following this she wrote and performed ‘Gollum’ for the finale of the 2002 film,The Lord of the Rings,The Two Towers and co-wrote two songs with Australian, UK based, pop sensation Kylie Minogue. In 2005 she released her fifth album, Fisherman’s Woman and 2008 saw the release of her most recent album, Me and Armini. Emiliana Torrini sings in a voice that is gentle but confident. Her poetical lyrics contain thought provoking messages that are often uplifting. When listening to Torrini’s music, I feel as if I am resting peacefully in a hammock, watching her tell of her stories and pondering through the clouds. Her music takes the listener places and one can feel the honesty in her words. Me and Armini carries more upbeat melodies than Fisherman’s Woman and both are permeated by her gorgeous instrumentals. Emiliana Torrini’s music uses beautiful guitar picking, bird noises, hip riffs on an electric guitar, in one song she uses manipulated huffs of breath and creates many more amazing sounds with her voice. I look forward to listening to her latest album, Tookah, which will be released on the 9th of September, 2013. Read.Watch.Listen by Zara Adcock Copyright © 2013 Zara Adcock

The Sword of Star s Day 9

A Mi n d of Its Own The Story So Far…Captain Blake told Simon of their quest to find the S w o rd o f S t a r s …

S

“Good, because now all you need to study is: navigation, carpentry, steering, rowing, weaponry and sword skills,” Violet threw back her head and laughed. Simon glanced at Captain Blake and was certain that he too thought that whatever Violet was thinking was not funny.

imon hadn’t realised how exhausting piracy was until Captain Blake had assigned him to work with the ship’s Sail Master, Palin. The

bright eyed pirate had been training him all week how to adjust, manage and secure sail after sail. Then there were the sailor’s knots he had to learn too. That was no easy feat as there were many types of knots to master, each to be used for specific purposes. Violet, meanwhile, had been taken under Cook’s wing and was often found housekeeping, or more accurately, boat-keeping. But when Violet was able to slip away from Cook she would watch Simon learn how to work the sails muttering things like, “Education, who is he kidding? This is dangerous.” Simon guessed she was referring to Captain Blake with who she had been noted to argue with at least twice a day.

“Blake,” she said, dropping the word Captain. “My son is too small to row and as for weaponry and sword skills, well you’ve got to be kidding me,” Captain Blake scratched his stubble. “I’m not kidding,” he said. Violet’s recognisably sarcastic smile transformed into a stony glare. Simon heard the other conversations around him dissipate and saw all eyes and ears turn towards the argument. “My child will not be learning how to handle gunpowder, or fire canons and no way will he touch a sword,” she said. “I understand you concerns,” said the Captain. “But as an experienced sailor, pirate and someone who cares for Simon dearly, I believe he will be fine. We can stay away from rowing and gunpowder for now, but he will learn how to use a sword,” The Captain’s eyes swept over his crew. “Will you excuse us for a moment?” He took Violet’s arm and Simon went to follow automatically. “No Simon, you stay here.” Said Captain Blake as he led Violet away.

At the end of the week, Captain Blake watched Simon assist Palin through choppy winds. Simon worked well, almost intuitively, and Palin hardly had to give him any directions. After dinner, Captain Blake stood and made a toast, “To Simon, a pirate in the making and a pretty good one too!” “To Simon,” the crew chorused. Simon felt his heart leap a little. With all the men saying his name he felt as if he truly were a part of the crew.

“Women on ships are bad luck.” Someone murmured. “Ssh.” Said another pirate. Simon saw Cook exit and Clara shift uncomfortably. “Sit here son,” Said Sir Blithe patting the bench beside him. “Don’t worry dear boy,”

Captain Blake sat back down next to Simon and patted his back. “What do you say, Simon? Do you want to keep learning?” “Of course!” said Simon. Captain Blake chuckled.

“About what?” Simon jibed. He noticed one of the ship’s telescopes behind him and turned to look through it. He knew he wouldn’t see much at night but he did not want to face the crew. Simon was humiliated. Why did his mother have to ruin this moment in front of everyone? She hadn’t even complimented him for his great sail work. “They don’t work anymore,” said Sir Blithe gesturing to the telescope. Simon ignored him. “Those telescopes used to show you any destination you requested, but like I said, they don’t work anymore,” Simon faced Sir Blithe. “Are you saying that you could see anywhere you wanted?” he asked. “That’s right,” said Sir Blithe. “You just had to tell them where you wanted to see. Nowadays they seem to have a mind of their own,” On seeing Simon’s interest, Sir Blithe moved to face the telescope. “Okay, look into the telescope,” Sir Blithe told him. Simon obeyed. Sir Blithe put his mouth close to the device and intoned, “Mermaid’s Cove, Mermaid’s Cove…Did you see the cove and the, er, mermaids?” he asked. “No Sir,” said Simon. “Oh, oh well then. I told you it didn’t work.” Simon sighed and looked back into the telescope. A dark, thunderous island with thick fog appeared. Lightning struck the island’s centre and Simon heard the faint echo of a scream. Simon jumped to his feet. “Did anyone else hear that?” he demanded. The crew looked up, puzzled. Simon left the main deck, running to find Violet and Captain Blake. Was it Mum that screamed? Simon wondered and hoped she was alright. He soon bumped into her as he neared the foremast. “Did you scream?” he asked. “No I didn’t, why?” she said. “Oh, sorry,” Simon said and tried to get past her. “Hey Simon,” Violet’s hand closed around his shoulder. “What’s wrong?”

Simon checked no one was nearby. “Aren’t you proud of me?” he gulped. “I can manage sails now, isn’t that…cool?” Violet’s lips curled into a smile. “Yes Simon, it is. I am so proud of you, so, so proud of you,” “Then why didn’t you say so?” he mumbled. “I’m sorry, I just worry you’ll get hurt,” “I won’t. Palin taught me how to look after myself,” Simon held Violet’s gaze until she seemed to give in. “Where’s Captain Blake?” Simon asked. “In his office, why?” said Violet. Simon was already off and running. “I need to talk to him.” he called back. Simon dashed into the office where the Captain had revealed the quest and puffed. Simon saw that the Captain had the cupboard open but before Simon could even begin to be curious as to what was kept there, Captain Blake spun around and slammed the cupboard doors shut. “Simon?” he asked. Simon frowned at the briskness in the Captain’s voice but didn’t dwell on it. Instead, he explained what he had seen and possibly heard looking into the telescope. “Describe the scream,” said Captain Blake. Simon thought carefully. “Whoever screamed sounded as if they were tormented. It was… chilling,” Reflecting on the sound, Simon was confused as to why he ever thought it was his mother. “Almost unhuman,” Simon added. The Captain told Simon to sit and poured himself some brandy. He sipped it carefully, his eyebrows furrowed. Another thought occurred to Simon and he stood up without realising it as the idea took hold of him. “Sir Blithe said the telescopes had a mind of their own,” he burst. “But what if…?” Simon paused and looked to the Captain who returned his stare with twinkling eyes. The Captain finished his brandy and chose a scroll from the shelf. He stretched it out over the table. “Explain what you saw again?” said the Captain. Lemon and Basil Pasta Challenge Rate: 2/5 Preparation Time: 1 hour Serves 4

I always feel wonderful making this dish. The combination of scents from the fresh ingredients is both invigorating and soothing. This meal will take up to one hour to prepare and I recommend it for a special Mother’s Day dinner.

500g organic kamut spaghetti 2 lemons 2 handfuls of fresh basil 1 handful of fresh parsley 20 (or more) pitted black olives 2 red capsicums 2 chillies, finely sliced ¾ cup of parmesan, grated Organic extra virgin cold pressed olive oil Sea salt and black pepper

To Cook the Pasta: Fill a pot of water and add a sprinkle of coarse sea salt and a drizzle of olive oil. Put the lid on the pot and turn the stove heat to high. Once the water comes to boil, remove lid, add the pasta and turn the heat down to medium. With a pasta fork, stir the pasta well so that it does not stick together and allow the water to come to the boil again. Stir pasta every couple of minutes. Once the pasta is cooked (it will be soft and easy to chew), drain in a colander, return the pasta to the pot and put the lid back on the pot.

Squeeze lemons until you have ½ cup of lemon juice. Rinse the herbs and pull the leaves from the stems, put aside in a bowl. When the pasta has been drained, stir in most of the lemon juice and a good drizzle of olive oil to keep the pasta moist. Season with a good pinch of sea salt and a good sprinkle of pepper. Add the chillies, parsley and most of the parmesan.

Missing Out on Education

BURMESE BURMESE MIGRANT MIGRANT KIDS KIDS DENIED DENIED EDUCATION. EDUCATION.

T

About 80 percent of all labour migrants in the country are Burmese, with the rest from Cambodia and Laos. According to a recent report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an estimated 200,000 migrant children younger than 17 are in the country. However, some NGOs estimate there could be as many as 500,000 children born to Burmese parents in Thailand. At least 2,000 Burmese children are born in Thai hospitals each year, while unknown numbers are born at home or outside, in orchards or plantations.

housands of children of Burmese migrant workers in Thailand are missing out on an education, specialists say. Under Thai policy, all children, regardless of their status in the country, can attend school, but many migrant children do not. While some cite problems of language or the lack of resources of individual schools, others have to work to support their families. Many attend migrant learning centres run by local NGO’s instead, which are not recognized by the Thai Ministry of Education. Of the estimated 2.2 million migrants who live and work in Thailand, just over 500,000 are officially registered, making exact calculations of how many children are among them difficult.

APPROACH MAGAZINE

In August 2005, the government adopted a policy entitled “Education for All”, with the aim of giving all children in Thailand equal access to schooling.

44

AUGUST 2013

EDUC ATION

Children of Burmese migrant workers

He also explained that during the first few months of enrolment, some children had difficulties adapting, especially students who had not yet developed their communication skills or were over 10 and entering school for the first time. Those students were put in first-grade classes, which are difficult to adapt to different age groups, while teachers were not equipped for this situation.

According to the Peace Way Foundation in Thailand, a migrant child could only be educated if a teacher was willing to accept the child and the family could afford it. Children could attend classes, but with little hope of obtaining a Thai certificate of education, which is essential for further study. “In practice, this is challenging to implement for a number of reasons,” Amanda Bissex, chief of the child protection section with the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Thailand, told IRIN. “Access to education for migrant children is impeded by understanding of the cabinet decision at the local level; extra costs associated with education, for example, school uniforms and text books, availability of suitable education and language of instruction.” In addition, there is the language barrier and financial struggles for Burmese children, while teachers have their own difficulties, education specialists said. “The teachers’ and communities’ attitude toward migrant children have to be properly approached so that the EFA [Education for All] can be implemented effectively,” Rangsun Wiboonuppatum, a UNICEF education officer, said.

NGO Schools Meanwhile, for those unable to attend Thai schools and going to local learning centres run by NGOs in their area, additional challenges remain. “We’re giving [free] education to as many students as we can, but there are many students who cannot come to our learning centres, which calls for further intervention measures,” said Thein Lwin, who runs the Children Learning Center in Chiang Mai, teaching Burmese, Thai, English and Maths, in northern Thailand. In migrant schools, children are taught in their native language and in many cases follow the Burmese educational curriculum with additional courses such as Thai language and computer skills. However, after completing high school, these young graduates do not have any prospects of attending university, as their education is not officially recognised by the Thai Education Ministry. “Without education, they [Burmese children] will have no chance to make a better life wherever they live, in Thailand or Burma,” Myint Wai, deputy director of the Thai Action Committee for Democracy in Burma, said. “We have to get our school officially recognized by the Thai government so the children can continue further studies in the Thai education system,” Paw Ray, chairwoman of the Burmese Migrant Workers Education Committee, said. Thai authorities are reportedly drafting the legal status for such learning centres operated by NGOs to certify their education. Editor´s note :There are cases of rejection of kids in advanced educational systems in our town if the owners don´t like the parents.

More Tests and Grades KIDS IN SCHOOL TO FACE UPGRADED CHALLENGES?

he UK government has announced new plans which could mean primary school children in England will start taking tests at a younger age. It could also mean that all pupils

from the age of 11 will be ranked on a national grading scale - this means every pupil would be put in different bands according to their achievements. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Schools Minister David Laws announced the plans as part of a big report into how education is run. The changes could be brought in to schools in 2016. Nick Clegg said: “For children to achieve their potential we need to raise the bar - in terms of tests, pass marks and minimum standards. I am confident that primary schools and their pupils will meet that challenge.” But some teachers are against the plans, because they think the new system would upset some children and could put them off school. Some parent´s comments : “I think it will make school much more stressful.” – Ivana - Wales “I don’t agree that there should be more tests because it can put students under more pressure, which isn’t healthy. I for one feel under pressure when it comes to exams and I don’t think it’s fair that we have to go through more tests” – Ronald - Scotland

“I think is a brilliant idea! Because children would get used to tests so when they start Junior School they will know what to do in the more serious tests. I would have loved to do them when I was in the infants because they are so much fun! “ – Miriam - England “Some of us think it is a bad idea, because if children get a bad grade then they might loose their confidence and give up altogether - it might make them feel embarrassed to be compared to others and it might put them off school due to added stress. The rest of us think that testing is a good idea - some children might respond well to knowing their grades and where they stand compared to other children. Regular testing might encourage those children, especially if they make progress.” – Janette - England. “I think there should be simple, playful tests starting from year 1 so children get an experience of taking tests. Not grade them seriously as some may be discouraged, especially in a multicultural educational system. It is very remarkable how 5 – 7 year old kids relate to things that take place during a school day”

Aglio Olio, a Real Italian Pizzeria IN THE CULINARY WORLD THE TREND IS GOING BACK TO OLD VALUES LIKE LOCALLY PRODUCED PRODUCTS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP.

M

ax Mazzalai, the owner of Aglio Olio, in Naebkehard Road around the corner of Soi 51, is no stranger to the gastronomy business in Hua Hin, mainly because he is also the co-owner of the Del Casaro Cheese factory in Soi 10. Del Casaro is one of Thailand’s leading suppliers of Mozzarella and Ricotta cheese and supplies hotels and restaurants in popular tourist destinations such as Bangkok, Pattaya, Samui, Phuket, Koh Phangan and of course own our Royal beach town. Aglio Olio Pizzeria, just like in Italy, it is not only restaurant, but it’s a Pizzeria! With a wood fired oven, Pizza’s are made before your very eyes with fresh ingredients and cheese from their own factory with organic salads from local produce. Furthermore Aglio Oilio’s atmosphere is simple and neat with covered outside seating, reminding with small hints here and there of Italy, in line with Thai culture, because Thai people go to a restaurant because of the quality of the food and don’t worry too much about the seating. Aglio Olio pizzeria has comfortable seating and because its open on the sides, a nice breeze accompanied us throughout our meal. With the first round of drinks we got some complementary Mozarella and black olives straight from the factory, fresh and tastefull unlike some plain processed imported products.

This mozzarella is made from milk from happy local cows which have been outdoors all their live and we from Approach appreciate that because it brings a more rich flavour, serves the environmental sustainability and provides local jobs. As starters we chose my personal favourite, Beef Carpaccio, quality thin sliced beef with Parmesan and rocket salad. The accompanying wines were chosen by Max himself to give us the best match possible. In adittion a light Bardolino from Lago di Garda matched the starters perfectly. As A main course, Gnocchi Gorgonzola and Pizza Calzone Aglio Olio was served. Albeit being a cheese aficionado as a Dutchman, I was a little bit worried the Gorgonzola and whether it would be too strong of taste, but it was mild, moist and very tasteful. The (folded) Pizza Calzone was richly filled with ham , spinach tomatoes and cheese and reminded me of Calzones I ate in Italy on the Adriatic Riviera or equally Costa Amalfi. A classic Chianti complemented the main course. For dessert, the obligatory Tira- Mi- Su deliciously demanded a double Espresso with a Grappa as a “digestive”. Undoubtedly, Aglio Olio is a family restaurant with plenty of space for friends and family in an unstressed atmosphere and home cooking with nice prices. Close your eyes and you are in Bella Italia! An enjoyable evening with good food!

(about 0.7 kg) boneless chicken thigh or breast, cut into chunks 1 can coconut milk 4 kaffir lime leaves, OR substitute 1 tsp. grated lime zest 1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into chunks 1 zucchini, sliced lengthwise several times, then cut into chunks generous handful fresh basil 2 Tbsp. coconut oil or other vegetable oil GREEN CURRY PASTE: 4 small green Thai chilies, OR substitute 1 to 2 jalapeno peppers 1/4 cup shallot OR purple onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 thumb-size piece galangal OR ginger, grated 1 stalk fresh minced lemongrass OR 3 Tbsp. frozen or bottled prepared lemongrass 1/2 tsp. ground coriander 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 3/4 to 1 tsp. shrimp paste 1 (loose) cup fresh coriander/cilantro leaves and stems, chopped 1/2 tsp. ground white pepper (can be purchased at some supermarkets, OR at Asian food stores) 3 Tbsp. fish sauce 1 tsp. brown sugar 2 Tbsp. lime juice

Preparation:

Place all the “green curry paste” ingredients together in a food processor, and process to a paste. If necessary, add a few Tbsp. of the coconut milk to help blend ingredients. Set aside. 2. Prepare the lime leaves by tearing the leaf away from either side of the stem. Discard the central stem. Then, using scissors, cut leaves into thin strips. Set aside. 3. Warm a wok or large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the oil and swirl around, then add the green curry paste. 4. Stir-fry briefly to release the fragrance (30 seconds to 1 minute), then add 3/4 of the coconut milk, reserving 2-3 Tbsp. per serving portion for later. 5. Add the chicken, stirring to incorporate. When the curry sauce comes to a boil, reduce heat to medium or medium-low, until you get a nice simmer. 6. Cover and allow to simmer 3-5 more minutes, or until chicken is cooked through. Stir occasionally. 7. Add the red bell pepper and zucchini, plus the strips of lime leaf (or lime zest), stirring well to incorporate. Simmer another 2-3 minutes, or until vegetables are softened but still firm and colorful. 8. Do a taste-test for salt, adding 1-2 Tbsp. fish sauce if not salty enough. If you’d prefer a sweeter curry, add a little more sugar. If too salty, add a squeeze of lime or lemon juice. If too spicy, add more coconut milk. Note that this curry should be a balance of salty, spicy, sweet and sour, plus bitter (the bitter is found in the fresh basil garnish). 9. Serve this curry in bowls with rice served separately, allowing guests to add their own. Top each portion with fresh basil, then drizzle over 2-3 Tbsp. coconut milk, and ENJOY! 1.

There is good golf cross the country with most of best courses in Thailand in and around Bangkok, Pattaya and Hua Hin. Thai Country Club has hosted more professional golf events than any other Thai golf course. Black Mountain Golf Club is the only golf course in Thailand to be rated in the top 100 courses outside the USA by Golf Digest. Service, hospitality and Thailand are synonymous with each other and golf is no exception. Thais golf as much as the visitors and you can always meet friendly locals on the golf course. Caddies are standard at all Thailand golf courses and will be missed by every visiting golfer on their first round back home.

Interesting Thai culture, excellent attractions, and world renowned night life ensure a great time off the course. Golf in the Kingdom is all about the Thai golf experience. For example, try a foot massage after golf. After all, it is only 300 THB and can be found on practically every street corner. It is true that green fees at Thailand golf courses are higher than they used to be. One round of golf at a top Thailand golf course such as Siam Country Club in Pattaya can set you back 6,000 THB including caddie fees and tips. Fortunately everything else in Thailand is reasonably priced. Resorts, transportation, food and drink are priced less than most other premium golf.

OVERALL VERDICT

Thailand and Portugal are both high quality, albeit very different golf destinations. For short trips Portugal cannot be beat. For a unique golf experience with world-class service and enjoyment, Thailand is the undisputed leader.

SUMMARY

Vettel was victorious on home soil for the first time in his Formula One career after winning the German Grand Prix at Nurburgring. The Red Bull driver leaped into the lead at the start and never relinquished it other than during pit stop cycles. Raikkonen was fast closing in on the German near the end but there was not enough time to mount a challenge and he finished second while Lotus teammate Grosjean rounded out the podium. Alonso finished fourth, ahead of Hamilton, who made his way past Button on the final lap. Webber finished seventh despite a disastrous pit stop following which he lost a wheel that struck a cameraman. The cameraman was bruised but ok.

Just days after being enshrined in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, fivetime Grand Slam singles champion Martina Hingis has announced that she is coming back to the WTA Tour for the first time since 2007. The legendary - and occasionally controversial - Hingis announced on Tuesday that she will be playing doubles in two weeks at the Southern Californian Open in Carlsbad with Daniela Hantuchova. Nobody knows yet whether this is a one-time trial, the start of a comeback in doubles or even a (seemingly unlikely) complete re-launch of her career. Hingis and Hantuchova go way back. But one thing is for sure: This is great news for the WTA.

Women’s tennis has been beaten up a lot over the past few years, especially because it’s been compared to the golden era of the men’s game. Since women’s sports are always viewed under a harsher microscope, the down times always seem much more dire. Enter Hingis, who brings a lot of always coveted spice to the WTA tour. She’s outspoken, enthusiastic and incredibly charismatic. She’s also one of the all-time greats. Hingis spent 209 weeks at No. 1 in singles (No. 4 on the all-time list) and 35 weeks as the No. 1 in doubles. Along with her 43 singles titles, she has 37 doubles crowns, including 10 Grand Slams. THE CHAMPIONS OF

WIMBLEDON

M

en Singles - 2013 Wimbledon was a final breakthrough for Andy Murray in the men´s single. Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic to become the first British man to capture the

Wimbledon championship since Fred Perry in 1936. He did it in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, in front of a very supportive Centre Court crowd. As expected, the tournament’s top two seeds put on an often brilliant display of tennis. The final was the 19th meeting between the rivals, and it showed. During some of the extended rallies, of which there were many, it seemed like they each knew what the other player was going to do next. Murray’s victory was his first against Djokovic since the U.S. Open final last year and gives him eight wins in 19 matchups. The world’s top-ranked player had won the previous three encounters, including the Australian Open Championship match earlier in the year For the Wimbledon fan favourite, it marks his second career Grand Slam title and the second marquee victory at the All England Club in the past year. He captured the gold medal during the London Olympics last summer, which appeared to have a huge impact on his confidence level. The difference between the two superstars was minimal throughout the match, but Murray was the better player from the outset.

Below Andy Murray and Marion Bartoli

Ladies Singles In the end, Marion Bartoli’s tennis was just too good. The Frenchwoman, at 28 years old, came into Saturday’s final as somewhat of an underdog against Sabine Lisicki, who had summoned her best tennis to beat Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska among others on her way to the final. While Bartoli didn’t face a player inside the Top 15, she was sensational on Saturday, blasting the ball off both wings and not looking deterred at all against the German, who seemed shaken by nerves upon the big occasion. Bartoli, playing in her 47th major, sets a record for most Grand Slams played before winning her first title, previously held by Jana Novotna (who was playing her 45th Slam when she won Wimbledon in 1998). Bartoli gains her eighth career title and will move up to No.8 in the world following the win.

LISICKI THRILLER

Sabine Lisicki

After upending defending champion Serena Williams, it was the fourth time big-hitting Sabine Lisicki had triumphed over a reigning French Open champion. It marked her fourth stand in the last eight in as many appearances and the ever-smiling giant killer of this year’s Championships thumped her way through to become the first German since seven-time champion Steffi Graf in 1999 to reach the decider. Unfortunately she couldn’t hold back the tears during the match and sobbed during her runners-up speech as she gracefully acknowledged she was overwhelmed by the occasion.

Chronic Lyme TICKS TRANSMITTED DISEASE.

L

by GMoss

Protecting yourself from ticks • Know where ticks live. They favour moist and humid environments in the woods or in grassy areas. The CDC recommends to always walk in the centre of hiking trails to avoid contact. • Products with permethrin kill ticks; you can treat boots, clothing and camping gear with them. • Use bug spray repellant with 20 percent or more DEET will protect you for several hours. • When you come indoors, change clothes and bathe or shower as soon as possible. You’ll prevent ticks from crawling around on you, and you’ll find them more easily. • Do a full-body tick check as soon as you come inside. Check your children and friends, too. If you’re alone, use a mirror. Remember to check under your arms, in and around your ears, inside your belly button, behind your knees, between your legs, around your waist and in your hair. • Don’t forget to check your hiking gear, too. • To make sure you’re not missing anything, tumble clothes in a dryer on high heat for an hour to kill any remaining ticks.

yme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the our Hemisphere. Borrelia is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks belonging to a few species of ticks. Early symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue,

depression, and a characteristic circular skin rash called erythema migrans (EM). Left untreated, later symptoms may involve the joints, heart, and central nervous system. In most cases, the infection and its symptoms are eliminated by antibiotics, especially if the illness is treated early. Delayed or inadequate treatment can lead to more serious symptoms, which can be disabling and difficult to treat. Especially in our tropical climate, ticks on our pets are very common. Pets being able to enter the house may “lose” a tick or two which then finds it way to your sofa or even bed. Ticks are hard to kill animals and you really need to hit it hard with a shoe to crack it. Ticks feed on mice, rats, dogs and cats equally but probably enjoy a luxury meal on a human. If a tick is discovered within 20 hours’ time on your skin, infection is most improbable. Although many doctors and infectious disease specialists believe that antibiotic therapy is the best curative plan, there are literally thousands of patients - and a considerable number of doctors - who believe the problem is more complicated. Preventative measures such as wearing protective clothing when in the woods and checking bare arms and legs for the tick that carries the disease. Keep pets outside in the garden where they belong.

Symptoms of tick-borne illness The most common symptoms are: • Fever/chills • Aches and pains -- headache, muscle aches, fatigue; joint pain is also fairly common.

Eat more than 5 servings of fruit & vegetables daily and live longer. The survey or study did not say whether the study included other eating habits such as sugar , fat and protein consumption.

Men are known to hold back on early prostate screening Men, when it comes to tests such as a prostate screening, are not very spontaneous as these tests require the doctor to practically hand-test the whereabouts of the prostate gland in the rectal…. There are no alternative tests….just have to bear with us men.

Child Diabetes Linked to Early Solid Foods

Slapped kids may develop obesity as they grow up. This is a psychological development. Kids may eat uncontrolled to “protest” against physical treatment in their early years.

If a child starts with solid foods earlier than 3 months of age , their risk of developing diabetes at older ages is more probable than if babies are fed on mother milk and fluids before the age of 4-6 months. However this does not include feeding natural low sugar food such as bananas, papaya and other vitamin and mineral rich fruits.

Podology

in Thailand by Dr. Dirk Weeber

THE SCIENCE OF TREATING FEET

P

The medical team, that is Medical Podologist Mor Dirk Weeber - Arayatumsopon, the 39 year old medical director of the clinics originally from Germany. Mor Wuttipong Arayatumsopon (35, Thai) an in Germany occupied Medical Podologist and CEO of The Podology Centre. Bobby Khotbuntao (28,Thai) the Medical Supervisor occupied in Thailand and Janet Sharon Henry the 65 year old Medical and Office Assistant from the United States of America, who is actually retired, but volunteering to escape the boredom of the retirement. The Podology Centers Bangkok and Chiang Mai are the first and only Medical Foot Therapy Centres in Thailand. Two branches exist. One in Bangkok which opened in November 2009 and the main branch in Chiang Mai which opened in August 2008. The Podology Centre is not concerned with pedicures, which are largely for aesthetic purposes, but with administrating appropriate medical treatments for feet. The treatments range from curing basic problems such as skin problems, corn removals, cracked heal treatment, in-growing nail treatment and sweat foot treatment, to curing more serious foot matters such as wounds affected by diabetes, neurological conditions or foot deformities through custom made Orthotics.

odology the science of treating the feet has its origin in ancient Greece, where the word “Podos” meant the foot. It was the father of the medicine, Hypokrates, who lived hundreds of years before Christ, who is known to have first

treated a foot problem. Later in the middle ages, approximately surround 1630, the 3 occupations of the barber, dentist and podologist were done by people, who have been called “Bader”. They made all this 3 jobs and have been the pioneers of Podology. We know this because some painters, caught scenes of several jobs, by painting the people, what they were doing. So these painted pictures are our historical witness’ about what the “Baders” did in the middle age in Europe. With the following centuries the 3 jobs developed and the Barber cuts only hair today, the dentist is an own medical field while we have today Foot treatments for eastetic or cosmetic purpose we call Pedicure and the Medical Foot Therapy we call simply Podology. There is a relation to the Podiatrist in the United States, but the Podologist is more or less a foot surface expert (crossing the field of Dermatology, Phlebology, Neurology, Anatomy, Alternative Medicine and General Practician) while Podiatrists have more the function of Orthopaedic Foot and Leg Surgeons.

Hygiene is the main concern of the Podology Centre and to this end all equipment is sterilized and packed in separate disposable bags to ensure that patients are not at risk from bacterial infection. The Podology Centre also offers its customers and patients a choice of expert-selected quality foot, leg, nail and skin treatment products at reasonable prices, such as skin cream foams, collagen lotions and skin crack ointments.

Thailand is today not dealing much with foot health. There are pedicure institution almost everywhere, but they have no idea how to treat medical issues. This is done of dermatologists, general practitioners or general surgeons with sometimes fatal consequences. In Thailand the doctors are too fast with amputations and they very often prescribe antibiotics and pain killers, where appropriate foot treatments would be necessary.

The medical team is very proud to offer IPL Laser Treatments, Liquid Nitrogen Treatments, Alternative Medicine through Aroma Therapy and Dietary Supplements, they even have their own copyright protected Products.

An own history about medical foot treatments actually isn’t existing anywhere in Thailand. We only know - hundreds of years ago the foot was seen as holy in Thailand, but over the years this has changed. It were according to Thai History Professors the first missionaries who changed the view over the centuries. As there are no national historical scripts in the libraries or books, it is not much known about the foot history in Siam or Thailand, what is there are only massage or acupressure technics in pictures and texts (but mainly in Chinese.) At “The Podology Centre”, which is currently the only Medical Foot Therapy Clinic group in Thailand, there still is the believe that the foot is holy and the engaged team want the people of Thailand to agree. Plenty of swimming pools set amongst lush jungle settings, an excellent range of restaurants and leisure facilities, superb service... with a really fun side! Massive water slides, both speedy and steady and a brilliant area for younger kids means there will be water-play to keep everyone smiling. The completion date was not know as APPROACH went to the printer.

Sansiri The Gentle Development Giant I

n 2012, the real estate sector recovered well from the devastating flood in the latter part of 2011, which reflects the strength of the Thai economy as a whole.

Governmental relief and stimulus measures, continual low mortgage rates, as well as solid support from financial institutions all contributed to Sansiri’s rapid expansion. In 2012, the Sansiri group recorded historically high presales of 42,593 million Baht, doubling that of the previous year, mainly through its expansion into up country markets, such as Phuket, Chiangmai, Nakorn Ratchasima (Khao-yai), Chonburi (Pattaya) and Khon Khan In 2013, Sansiri aims to further fulfil its commitment to delivering quality products and superior services, as well as expand to cover more areas of the country to meet fast growing provincial demands.

APPROACH MAGAZINE

With long term experience and the dedication of its management and staff, Sansiri is confident of maintaining sustainable growth. With a rapid increase in active projects, Sansiri intends to bring in new technologies to further improve the company’s efficiency. Operation of our precast factory, which helps to increase housing production capacity and reduce reliance on skilled labour, commenced in March 2012. As for our customers, Sansiri maintains good relations with its growing customer base through various “Sansiri Family” activities. For instance, Sansiri held the “Baab Bird Bird – Wan Khong Rao Young Yoo” concert in December as a New Year’s present for customers. Sansiri owes its success to the support of shareholders, debenture holders, customers, financial institutions, members of the press and business partners.

Heritage of Joy in Hua Hin

Act as a one-stop, world-class property services group in Thailand that provides a fully integrated range of products and services.

Baan Koo Kiang, a modern style condominium, is designed under the concept of “A pair” which is derived from a better use when two objects come in pairs such as chopsticks or a fork and a spoon. Similar to Hua Hin and its attractive neighborhoods such as Hua Hin railway station, Chatchai Market and Hua Hin Night Market, together they have made the town a memorable destination.

Internally, Sansiri relies on the expertise and commitment of all of its directors, management and staff. On behalf of Sansiri Public Company Limited, I would like to convey my appreciation to all of the parties concerned and hope for their continued support in the future.

Baan Saan Ngam condominium development in Hua Hin by Sansiri that takes its inspiration from ‘Precious Nature’.
