Pranburi Dragon Boat Races November

Loy Kratong November 28th Loy Kratong is not a national holiday, but an evening when Thais pay respect to the goddess of the waters by floating candlelit offerings on any and all waterways around the Kingdom. Hua Hin beach gets especially busy on Loy Kratong night.

In November each year at Pranburi, which is some 30km south of Hua Hin, there is dragon boat racing. Teams compete against each other over a 1km long stretch of the Pranburi River and it’s really great fun to watch. The competition is taken seriously and teams will practice regularly for months in advance.

His Majesty the King’s birthday December 5th The 5th of December is the King’s Birthday Celebrations (Father’s Day). King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest reigning monarch, is well beloved and deeply respected by all Thais old and young. The occasion of his royal birthday provides his loyal subjects the opportunity to express their reverence for him. All over the country, buildings and homes are elaborately decorated and the area around the Grand Palace is spectacularly illuminated.

The Hua Hin Vintage Car Rally December The Hua Hin Vintage Car Rally will feature some of the best kept and immaculately restored cars seen within Thailand and is a showcase of the finest in vintage vehicles. Previous years of the rally have seen more than 60 classic cars taking part in the rally which covers a total distance of 225km as the drivers take the leisurely route from Bangkok to Hua Hin. The event starts in Bangkok and finishes in Hua Hin and people using hotels in Hua Hin can watch all of the cars as they drive around the Thai coastal city. The tour through the city will include a drive over to Klaikangwon Palace, past the railway station and back to the hotel again.

Man of the Moment

For our first issue, Approach have been privileged enough to have been handed an opportunity for an in-depth interview with one of the hottest, if not the hottest property in local politics. That’s right, he’s none other than the newly elected Mayor of Hua Hin Town Municipality Nopporn Vudhikul, or ‘Nayok Nui’ as referred to by the local Hua-Hinians After almost two decades under the control of Jira Pongpaibul, Hua Hin is ready for the new era. Having won the electoral vote by a landslide, winning well over double the vote of his nearest political opponent, the 47 year old winning candidate is here today to give us some insights about his personal life, his businesses, and most importantly, his much accredited vision on politics of his beloved Hua Hin.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am a Hua-Hinian, born and bred. I am a father of three , with two sons and one daughter. In terms of my educational background, I undertook my elementary school education at Hua Hin Vidhyalai School, Highschool at Hua Hin School, and for higher education, I obtained a Bachelor of Education at Rajabhat Jom Bung University, with Masters of Public Administration from Suan Dusit University. Business wise, on my wife’s side of the family, we’ve inherited some lands which we have converted into small to medium sized hotels and guesthouses, namely Baan Rabieng Dao on

Naebkehart road, Baan Rabieng Talay at Kao Takieab and Ruea Rimtarn Restaurant, also in Kao Takieb.

Inspirations in entering politics?

It’s the problems and the urge to fix them that have been my main influence to entering politics. And without the authority, these problems would just plainly be nothing but merely my own personal problems. Therefore, the only option I have so I can fix these perceived problems of my beloved town is by entering politics. It is the problems that have encouraged me to formulate pathways to be able to fix them. Throughout my involvement with politics, I have worked closely and consistently with the inhabitants surrounding various problems. I love this town so much that I can’t simply see these problems and just be sitting around and do nothing about them.

14

Your experience in politics?

LIFESTYLE

I first entered politics in 1994 with Khun Raewat for Patana Tong Tin Party at age 29 and became a candidate for the mayor of Hua Hin a year later in 1995. At that time, though it was an unsuccessful run, my overall vote counts weren’t bad considering we were running as the political opposition of the ruling mayor Khun Jira. Then four years later in 1999, I was invited to side up with Khun Jira’s party, who won the election. After a four year stint with the then mayor, I joined Hua Hin Palang Mai Party, which is my current party, with invitation from the party founder Khun Sirapan Kamolpramote – whom went on to win the 2003 election and was the mayor until 2008 until Khun Jira returned. And this time round, I am the leader of the Palang Mai Party myself. With everything mentioned, I can confidently say that I am ready in all aspects; physical wise and experience wise. If I was to be in this position earlier, for example in 1995, I would without a doubt not be as well prepared as I am now.

“The one person that deserves most credit would certainly be my wife, who has been exceptionally supportive.” What are your feelings regarding the victory?

It’s an amazing feeling, of course, after having spent almost 20 years in politics that I finally get to be in the position that I have always dreamt of. Knowing that in the first few attempts I would not win the election anyway, I still kept going. One thing I’ve always had in mind is the fact that regardless whether or not I won, I never forget about those who had faith in me all along. And now, in return, it seems like they have not forgotten about me either – it’s a huge relief. I’m also extremely flattered because I know I have won the election fairly through sheer hard work, determination and people’s confidence in me as I have heard countless number of cases, through my politician friends and acquaintances, where local politicians’ victories come from buying votes. I can assure you this is not the case of Hua Hin. Moreover, it is very pleasing as I feel that I have, in many ways, raised the benchmark for Hua Hin politicians. From now on, Hua Hin politicians will at least have to do what I do to win over people’s heart, plus whatever they can add on top of it – if they want to win the election by a landslide the way I did, which is to always be on your feet, be proactive, and work like a tireless engine.

How has the reception been so far? Both inner and outer circle?

My family is tremendously delighted. Generally, though, most of my inner circle surroundings have been pretty much the same as I have been involved with politics for well over twenty years. I really have my family to thank because without them, it would almost be impossible for me to get where I am today. The one person that deserves most credit would certainly be my wife, who has been exceptionally supportive, particularly her flexibility concerning my working hours – there is no strict schedule as to what time I have to be home by, which makes it easy for me to fully focus on my job. As for the outer circle, specifically people around the town, they seem pretty happy. First factor is judged by the number of votes. Correspondingly, I get people from all over the town coming up to congratulate me everywhere I go, so they I guess they must also be joyful. I vow not to only take good care of those that have voted for me, but also for those who may not have supported me from the start.

Anything that are out of your expectations?

Prior to winning the election, I already had in mind my own rough expectation about existing problems. However, it is a totally different picture once you’re actually in the hot seat. There are various problems that I didn’t know to the larger extent, mainly concerning budgeting issues. For instance, a significant proportion of funds borrowed by the previous board are still left unpaid, and it is unexpectedly our duty to formulate a plan to repay this. Additionally, substantial amount of the municipality’s reserved capital has also been used up without much remaining in the balance – which would certainly affect our development plans.

15

LIFESTYLE Furthermore, we also need to look at the overemployment issue as the municipality is currently employing well over 40 per cent above the planned budget. These problems stated are the add-ons with the five main policies. Although they are out of our expectations, we are ready to tackle them head-on without any fear, and I am confident to overcome them. There is no reason to hold back.

You’ve mentioned a few times about the five main policies to be implemented immediately, we would like you to talk about them in detail.

As you probably know already, my five main policies which I’ve heavily promoted throughout my campaign are traffic, water, safety, hygiene and flooding. Traffic Management: We plan to increase disciplines on the roads so that the road surfaces are optimally used. For example at the Chatchai market, parking next to the yellow and white marking on the pavement is supposed to be limited to a very short period of time –to briefly go down to buy something from the market quickly get back in their vehicles for instance. In reality, however, people treat it almost as a black and white marking, which means parking for an unlimited period of time. A three-lane road now becomes a two lane road and the whole point of the marking is completely misinterpreted. Originally, the purpose of the yellow and white marking is to work in favour of the vendors in the market, who wrap everything up at around noon. The solution is thus to treat it as a yellow and white from early morning up to 12pm, and from afternoon onwards to be treated as red and white (no parking allowed) by placing cones next to it. Moreover, we are going to try to encourage people to take the parallel road to that main road that only the locals know about.

Flooding: For Hua Hin’s case of flooding, we consider ourselves slightly more privileged than other areas. If the sea level is not substantially high, then there is a low chance of continuing water stagnation. However, we have plans to try to diminish the problem completely by constructing drainage pipes so that the water can flow through to the ocean as quick as possible. This is one of the minor problems.

Tell us about the development and the growth of Hua Hin Concerning employment, if one is not picky with a job, then it is not hard to find a job here. Apart from Bangkok, Hua Hin is one of the other few cities/ towns that people head to because it is a fast developing town where the market is big enough. Hua Hin is comparable to Hat Yai. When I did a survey, Hua Hin is actually around three times bigger than Hat Yai, area wise, however the Hat Yai Municipality has around three times the capital of Hua Hin. From my perspective, Hua Hin in full capacity can go as big as 4-5 times as big economically.

“Although lately the land prices have risen a lot and many transactions are deemed to be overvalued, but once the transactiosn are made, then automatically the value becomes fair – as the resale values are usually over the purchased value.” Water source: Currently, Hua Hin’s sources of water supply are Petchburi and Pran Buri. I am going to try to increase the sources of raw water as there are around 50,000 to 60,000 inhabitants that are listed in Hua Hin, and a monthly average of approximately 200,000 more that consists of tourists, students, and construction workers alike. By adding up these numbers it is obvious that there is no way that it can be enough. My long-term solution is to increase sources of raw water, increase the water treatment plants, and increase the places for water storage. Why is the water not so clean? It’s because right now raw water is mixed with treated water. This is only a short-term fix to the problem though. Safety: Safety is also an important issue. I have plans to build a watch tower on the beach and have fully equipped bodyguards to consistently prowl around. As for around the town, it is essential to have more CCTV cameras placed. Tackling illicit drugs is also under the safety classification. We want to impress visitors of Hua Hin so they return regularly, increasing the overall income for the businesses here. Tidiness and Hygiene: Garbage causes all sorts of problems, whether it be smells, insects, diseases. There is only so much that the government can do to help cleaning up, it has to come from all parties. We are going to encourage for the private section to also take part in cleaning up mess around their own areas – for example the hotel on the beach to be responsible for whatever mess on that beach and so to speak.

Previously, Hua Hin used to be just a vacation town, but now it is increasingly becoming an education town. Combining the two makes Hua Hin an investment town. Although lately the land prices have risen a lot and many transactions are deemed to be overvalued, but once the transactiosn are made, then automatically the value becomes fair – as the resale values are usually over the purchased value. Hua Hin used to be just about the beach, but now you can see the big developers are starting to build condos also on the other side of the Petchkasem road too.

On tourism?

We have some policies to try to attract people too. As of now Hua Hin still has 4 months of low season, which are June, July, August and September. During these four months, I will try to fit in activities so that Hua Hin gains more income than the current low seasons. The activities mentioned include the Hua Hin Jazz Festival and Honda Jazz Festival that recently stopped. Other than this, I do plan to stop increasing the tax, namely the tax on hotels - but in return I hope in near future for the hotels to participate in promoting Thai festivals. We are going to see a huge boost in tourism when the AEC is formed.

Anything else?

I think I’ve covered up everything yes?(Laugh)

The best Paella in Town at Cool Breeze Cool Breeze is located in one of the original fisherman houses at the beach. This is the first restaurant that brings the real Mediterranean food and atmosphere to Hua Hin. The specialties of Cool Breeze are authentic Spanish Tapas, Paella and Sangria. They also serve Mediterranean dishes, cheese and wine and homemade desserts. However it is not just a restaurant but also a bar with a comfortable lounge upstairs available for relaxing over a few cocktails or the main bar area where you can catch up on top sporting events.

They also have a front terrace and a rear garden where the Mediterranean atmosphere is really felt. The beautiful garden in the back is where we sat and took a look at the elaborate menu card filled with great looking South European specialties. We ordered an array of Tapas, like Pintxos, which is freshly baked bread straight from Bangkok with Chorizo, cheese, pate, Parma Ham and quiche. Every single one of them was simply delicious! After the Pintxos the Gambas al Ajillo baguette with Humus and Chipirones a la PLacha were served. Respectively the big shrimps lived up to their name and were prepared with very tasty garlic.

22

LIFESTYLE

The Humus was accompanied with crispy pita bread and the grilled Chipirones (baby squid) were very tender. The last Tapas we tasted was the Grilled Lemon Chicken Kebabs served with pita bread and cucumber yogurt dip Tzatziki. Since we spent many holidays in Spain and Greece when we were younger, we were surprised by the authentic taste of this dish. But then it was time for the “grand finale”. We ordered for our main course the renowned Spanish Paella. The seafood Paella cost only 850 Baht and serves two people.

BACK TO BANGKOK To experience the Land of Smiles to the fullest of its potential, one place you cannot simply afford to miss out on is, of course, Thailand’s great capital city of Bangkok.

Bangkok, A.K.A. City of Angels, has more than many things to offer. Not only is it rich in the historical culture of Thailand but it is also the most versatile city with influences from all over the globe. Whether you are looking for exquisite Japanese, Italian or even French cuisine no other city in Thailand has this much variety in choices and experiences. Or if you want to explore the City of Angels a bit further, it has more entertainment to offer than Las Vegas and Amsterdam combined. From incredible Muay Thai boxing to amazing dance performances, unique exhibitions to breathtaking city tours, stateof-the-art cinemas to vibrant nightclubs and the list continues. Furthermore it is a metropolis that embraces an abundance of retail from every corner of the world. There are gargantuan shopping malls that will take you months to plough through, assuming you want to see everything. Then there are markets where you will get lost in the availability of literally everything you can imagine. So to get a grasp on just a little taste of the infamous capital of Thailand, here is a short guide with the must & how go’s. One of the first adventures we start with is transportation. As transportation in Thailand, knowing where to get on and get off, can be quite tricky. The most comfortable and time efficient way is arranging a private car that will take you from your hotel or home to exactly where you want to be in Bangkok.

This will range from 2,500 to 3,500 baht depending your departure. However if you are a light traveller and seek more affordable means, the intricate minivan network of Thailand will take you to and from all cities in Thailand. The vans carry up to twelve passengers and fares range from 100 to 700 baht.

An important side-note however is that some mini-vans try to get as many runs up and down as possible. Meaning that the term ‘Kamikaze Van’ is well known under foreigners and requires a bit of experience to cope with or you can leave the whole mini-van adventure out. If the former sounds too uncomfortable or still too costly, a safe and easy way to travel is the vast railway network ranging beyond the borders of Thailand. Taking the trains here in Thailand can leave you breathless. Whether it is the unseen beauty of the landscape you pass by. The intriguing passengers, the ‘everything selling’ vendors or farm animals who board the train. The train experience, both first and second class, is like no other and fares will range from 28 to 800 baht. Our adventure continues and it involves getting the right place to seclude ourselves and unwind. Fortunately the array of excess choices can be narrowed down to a few hotels that really stand out in their authentic Thai heritage.

The Deck

Along the river of kings, the Chaopraya River, nestled amongst Bangkok’s historical palaces, temples and museums: a wonderful boutique gem is The Siam. This luxury retreat will transport you to a bygone serenity with an oriental allure and contemporary comforts. If you are rather located a bit more central in the capital, The Dusit Thani and The Sukhothai serve as trusted symbols of Thai values, with environments that are calm, fragrant and colourful, and with every detail crafted to lift the spirit and engage the senses. For the real Thai hospitality experience they are the most thriving and well established in their field. Furthermore for first timers, a must-go is The Grand Palace and Wad Pho, these are located in the old part of town and can easily be reached by taxi.

Iron Faries

It is interesting area with authentic Colonial and Thai buildings, historical monuments and market places. When completed the cultural portion of the day, a nice sundown spot is The Deck, which is located nearby The Grand Palace and Wad Pho. For drinks or an early dinner it is a perfect spot alongside the Chaopraya River overlooking various temples. And if you want to venture into the nightlife of this area, Koasarn Road is where you want to be. Which is known for its ‘back-packers’ tourists, then for a nice beer overlooking the street is The Roof bar, always vibrant and with life music. The next morning can start very early… If you really want to see all of Bangkok’s vast integrated infrastructure. The way to do this is either with a bicycle or ‘long-tail’ boat tour through the veins of the city. These tours will take you places some Bangkokians have never been and it will be an unforgettable experience hands down. Early start of the day or not, a fine hour in Bangkok is lunchtime. With an abundance of street food and countless restaurants your options are endless. One of them is Hua Seng Hong, located in China Town, it has the best birds’ Nest Soup and Goong Ob Woonsen in the city. Afterwards you can stroll through the markets and little shops for some inexpensive herbs, fruits or souvenirs.

Grand Palace

If you are not up for Chinese food but still want to do some shopping after your lunch. Then a good place to find both and more is Siam Paragon. Located in Siam Square, it is the heart and most versatile area of Bangkok. From almost all major food chains on the planet to little indy restaurants and even an enormous food market. One restaurant that stands out is Neua Koo, and it will surely set a new definition of great beef noodles for you. After wrapping up your lunch it is almost impossible to leave Siam Square. As it is the hotspot for shopping, whether Gucci, H&M or indy brands. Once you finished your seasonal shopping, Siam Square offers a wide variety of entertainment. Here you find Siam Ocean World, Madame Tussauds, Bowling and a gala of state-of-the-art Cinemas. But if shopping malls are something that you leave behind in your home country, then the weekends bring you Chatuchak Weekend Market. Located around sky train station Mo Chit, literally every trade imaginable is available there. Pets, plants, handicrafts, lamps, food and fabrics, the list is just too long. Approaching the evening tummies start to rumble and there is no place better than Bangkok in Thailand for fine cuisine. One of the many unforgettable Thai restaurants is a family-run place called Khua Kling Pak Sod. Their Southern style Gaeng Leaung is incredible, but surely will leave you with swollen lips. Not up for Thai food, one must experience these following jaw dropping kitchens that have elevated Bangkok’s standards to another level. First off we sit at the sushi bar in Mugendai, where food-gasms become a reality with sushi fresh from the chef’s hands.

Dusit Thani Hotel Second we head to Paris de Bangkok, where we are welcomed by Chef Eloi superb lamb shoulder creation and incredible savoyarde raclette. And last but not least we join Nicola’s table at Enoteca whilst his Italian chef prepares the delights of slow-cooked veal cheek, freshly made smoked pasta, and the finest cold cut around town. As night falls onto the city of angels, there are a handful of places where to venture next. High in the sky with a mind-blowing skyline view of Bangkok there are prominently two places to go. The Dome of LeBua and Vertigo of Banyan Tree, these two have combined height and style that form pure class, overlooking the capital for miles and miles. A more vibrant part of town is Thonglor - Ekamai, on Sukhumvit Road. This area is well known for its many trendy bars, clubs and the city’s top higher-end dining, making it a magnet for the young moneyed and the see-and-be-seen crowd. Places there like Iron Fairies, Tuba and Seenspace are rustic, retro and modern. Which are now undoubtedly the buzz spots to have a chill and a chat. If you are looking for more body movement and intense beats, RCA or Sukhumvit 11 will clench your thirst. Clubs like Bed Supperclub, Qbar and Route 66 ensure tunes ranging from House, Hip Hop and many more. All and all there are an abundance of experiences to be found in the capital and surely you will venture into yours soon…

Flying 30 feet in the air.

KiteBoardingAsia (KBA) has 7 IKO certifed kiteboarding centres and are the biggest kite centres in Asia and the only IKO certified center in Thailand. Kiteboarding is taking the world by storm. A cross between windsurfing, wakeboarding and paragliding, riders harness the power of the wind with a large flying kite and use it to pull them across the water with their feet strapped to a small board. The sport began in the mid ‘80’s when Frenchman Bruno Legaignoux developed a kite which could be re-launched from the water after crashing. His patented idea was an inflatable kite, with struts which were filled with air to allow the kite to float and give the kite rigidity. Today these kites are the main stay of Kiteboarding, ranging in many types of designs and sizes. The sport is easier to learn than it looks, as 90% of kiteboarding involves flying the kite competently. You don’t have to be a muscle

builder to learn this sport. While strength helps, once you have mastered flying the kite, it becomes easier. It is technique not strength that makes a good kiteboarder. It also explains why women tend to learn the sport better than men. Women tend to work with the kite rather than trying to overpower it and beat it into submission. Kiteboarding can be dangerous, and thus it is highly recommended to learn the sport at an IKO certified kiteboarding centre where they teach you to become a safe and independent kiteboarder. Kiteboarding Asia is the only IKO certified school center in Thailand. They also use only certified IKO instructors and also have 2 mil euro insurance so be careful of imitations.

A kiteboarder stands on a board, similar to a surfboard, with foot straps and uses the power generated by a large controllable kite to propel him or her and the board across the water. It is also possible to use the upward motion of the kite to jump in the air as high as 10 meters. The most important skill to get going on the board is learning how to control the kite. This is 8090% of the skill required. Learn to fly the kite confidently (with your eyes closed) as if it was a part of your body and you are well on your way to kiteboarding. KiteBoarding Asia (KBA) is the only IKO certified center in Thailand. It has five schools spread across Thailand, in Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Phuket, Chumpon and Pattaya.

The Return of Il Toro The Aventador is a two- door, two-seater sports car publicly unveiled by Lamborghini at the Geneva Motor Show on 28 February 2011. The Aventador was designed to replace the ten-year-old Murciélago as the new flagship model in the Lamborghini lineup starting in 2011.

Price: Europe: 11.800.000 Baht Thailand: 25.000.000 Baht

Soon after the Aventador unveiling, Lamborghini announced that it had already sold over 12 months of the production vehicles, with deliveries starting in the second half of 2011. The suggested retail price is €300,000 in Europe and a staggering 25,000,000 Baht in Thailand, which is more than double the price in Europe. The Aventador name was chosen for its symbolic connection to the world of fighting bulls, sharing a name with the legendary Aventador, a trophy- winning bull in the world of Spanish bullfighting. Production will be limited to 4000 units (4099 Murciélagos have been built). The molds used to make the carbonfibre monocoque are expected to last 500units each and only 8 have been made.

The first 1000 Aventadors were built in 15 months. According to Lamborghini the Aventador is two generations ahead of anything else on sale, is using Formula One-style suspension and a lightweight carbon fibre monocoque. Stylistically, the Aventador represents an evolution of its predecessor, the Murciélago. The car’s shape also borrows heavily from Lamborghini’s limited-edition Reventón and their Estoque concept car. Outrageous is the word that keeps on popping into one’s mind when attempting to describe what this car is actually like. As with the Murcielago, the doors open upwards to reveal a cabin that initially seems a very long way away, the highbackeddriver’s seat nestling just inches above the ground. But when you climb inside the similarities between old and new come to an abrupt end. The interior of the Aventador is every bit as new and revolutionary as its engine, gearbox or suspension. organized, with pedals that are

36

no longer angled in towards the centre of the car, there’s also more room for your head and elbows plus better visibility in all directions. As if climbing into a bright red Lamborghini via one of its vast scissor-doors isn’t somehow theatrical enough on its own. Even at five miles an hour this car sounds and feels fantastically alive beneath your backside. To begin with the steering seems lighter and a lot less cumbersome than you remember, the ride massively more refined (than in a Murcielago). The entire car, in fact, feels more mature than you were expecting given the history. But the big news, inevitably, concerns the performance, and I can tell you here and now that it is astonishing to the extent that you do not just climb aboard this car and nail its throttle to the floor at the first sign of a decent

37

road. You build up to that moment, slowly, and discover other things about this incredible car en route. Like how explosive its throttle response is, even at 4000rpm, and how switching between its various drive modes (strada, sport and corsa) alters not just the gear change speed and severity but the crispness of the engine mapping as well. Moreover as you’ll eventually discover later, will allow you to do things on the throttle in this car that you’d never even dreamed of doing in a Murcielago. It’s difficult NOT to be in the

LIFESTYLE

mood for it when you’ve got 690bhp of V12 thundering away behind your head, plus one of the best balanced midengined chassis’ in existence through which to deploy it. And when you do finally let rip in the Aventador, the most surprising discovery is that it’s nowhere near as terrifying as you thought it might be.

GOLF

A Scot in Thailand Simon Yates (born 16 March 1970) is a Scottish golfer. Turning professional in 1989, Yates relocated to Thailand after holidaying in Asia and deciding to base himself in the region. He has played on the Asian Tour since its first official season in 1995. He placed third on the Asian Tour Order of Merit in both 1999 and 2004 and was one of the first ten players to reach career earnings of a million U.S. dollars on the tour. Who is your most respected current golf player and why? This is a tough question as everybody has their own view. For me, it has to be someone like Ernie Els (the big easy) as he is so laid back and is a very likable character. If you could only play one more round of golf - where would you play it and why would you play it there? I would play this round at Augusta (The Masters) because most golf fanatics know the back 9 holes off by heart by watching the Masters Golf tournament on every year. Who would be your favourite playing partner? Probably someone like Richard Branson as I admire people

who start out with nothing and make a successful life through hard work and dedication. What is the hardest thing to get right in golf? Getting the ball in the hole! It is such a great game, golf, but at the same time it is such a frustrating game too. We all know how golf should be played and there are days where we go out and everything feels great and there are days when we all stand on the 1st tee and it just doesn’t feel right! For me, my alignment goes out very quickly so I have to keep checking. What do you consider to be the strongest part of your game? Tee to green has always been my strongest part and putting has been my weakest link but

I now know why!!! When I was about 10 years old I went out to play golf by myself a lot and loved hitting 2 or 3 drivers off every tee and then hitting my iron shots onto the green and when I got up to the green I picked the balls up and headed straight to the next tee thinking how far the next drive was going!!! What advice would you give to someone just beginning to learn golf? First of all the most important thing is to enjoy it. It is important to get lessons from the start as it makes everything much easier in the long run. Finally, in your opinion, just why is Tiger Woods so good? Talent, dedication and hard work.

The Beauty Queens of the Greens

#5

Michelle Wie

(born October 11, 1989) Wie set record as theyoungest player to play her way into an LPGA event (12 years, 4 months, 14 days at 2002 Takefuji Classic) via a qualifying round. This record was later broken. Her unusual path to golf stardom meant bypassing top junior competition and most top amateur competition to compete in LPGA Tour events as a sponsor’s exemption, while also playing in traditionally men’s tours around the world. She came close a couple times to making the cut on the PGA Tour, but also stumbled badly in some PGA Tour events (and during 2007, even in some LPGA events). And with all her lucrative endorsements and her celebrity status, as well as her elegant figure, she definitely deserves a spot on our beauty list.

#4

Blair O’Neal

(born May 14, 1981) With her exquisite feminine physique, it is almost impossible to believe that she had won 2 out of 3 NCAA Long Drive contests while attending Arizona State University, making her one of the longest hitters in college golf. More recently, she competed on the Golf Channel’s Big Break: Dominican Republic, where she won, was named MVP, and received an exemption to March’s 2011LPGA Kia Classic. In 2011, Blair played at different events with her killer swing and looks as well as her sporty Cobra clubs and PUMA attire.

Sandra Gal

(born 9 May 1985) is a German professional golfer who currently plays on the United States–based LPGA Tour. Gal tied for 14th in the 2007 LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament to earn full playing privileges on the LPGA in 2008; she turned professional immediately following the tournament. In her fourth season on the LPGA Tour in 2011, Gal won her first event at the Kia Classic in late March. She finished the 72-hole event at 16-under-par, one stroke ahead of runner-up Jiyai Shin Previously her best finish had been fifth at the 2009 LPGA Corning Classic. Also in 2009, she recorded two career-low rounds of 64.

#2

Anna Rawson (born 5 August 1981) is an Australian professional golfer and model. She currently

plays on the LPGA Tour. Rawson turned professional at the end of 2004, played a full season on the Future Tour and missed the cut at the 2004 LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. She finished third at the Ladies European Tour 2005 qualifying tournament and was a season 2006 LET rookie. On 5 December 2007, Rawson notified fans via her Myspace page that she had been invited to join the LPGA tour. In 2008 she qualified for a full time tour card via Q school for the 2009 tour.

Natalie Gulbis (born January 7, 1983)

#1

On tour, Gulbis did not win a tournament until her sixth season. She finished sixth on the LPGA money list in her fourth season with over $1 million in earnings in 2005. She placed in the top 10 in four consecutive major championships from the 2005 LPGA Championship to the 2006 Kraft Nabisco Championship. Her first professional win came at the July 2007 Evian Masters in France, where she defeated Jeong Jang in a playoff. Gulbis tapped in for a twoputt birdie on the first extra hole to claim the winner’s prize of $450,000. Gulbis has played on three victorious U.S. Solheim Cup teams - 2005, 2007, and 2009.

However, the more interesting part of Natalie Gulbis, as most would claim, is not how well she performs on the tour, but rather how well she has always been doing her part in terms of staying in the spotlight, even when she’s not performing up to standard with the tournaments. Gulbis has been making numerous appearances in a number of TV Shows such as Celebrity Apprentice and CSI. She has also been featured in countless amount of America’s sexiest photo shoots, including FHM and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue making her one of the most sought after athletes for her appearance, not just golf. With everything stated, it would be a complete nonsense if anyone else were to be the number one queen of the beauty queens of the greens!

Go Long or go Home! By Jamie Sturley

“The mind is the limit, if you can envision the fact that you can do something, you can!” - Arnold Schwarzenegger Now it is only natural to want to hit the ball further, especially when playing a round of golf with your friends and wanting to out drive your competition. When we see Tiger Woods, John Daly and Rory Mcilroy mash the ball 350 yards, we all would like to do the same. The mis-conception that a lot of amateurs have is that it is all down to strength, when as a matter of fact it is mostly down to technique. Having big arms and big muscles does not give you these distances.

not built like a bodybuilder and is not extremely tall. The reason for these tremendous numbers is all down to technique! Here are a few tips so you can out drive your competition the next time you are out on the course. The first thing is, and this may sound too simple to be true but, hitting the ball further comes down to one thing.... SPEED! This sounds easy enough right? Thats because it is! But speed must not be mistaken for trying to hit the ball as hard as humanly possible; a lot comes down to technique.

Jamie Sadlowski for example, the 2 time winner of the Re/Max world long drive championship set a personal record of a 445 yard drive during a competition, and averages 405 yards although he is

Back Bringing the club back until it falls over your left shoulder like John Daly does not increase club-head speed all the time, there is nothing wrong with keeping your swing compact. Turning your shoulders on a level plane is essential for a consistent swing. The key is to turn your shoulders to their full potential, this is where club-head speed comes from.

Hips For as long as golf has been around “It’s all in the hips”. Rotation of the hips is another essential, especially if you are not over athletic. Turning your hips back when on the back swing can free up your shoulders and arms for a lot of acceleration through the ball. One thing to always remember on the downswing is to move your left side out the way, this doesn’t mean sliding, this means rotating your hips out of the way.

GOLF

Legs Standing taller can increase your yardage dramatically. Standing taller can help free your arms and shoulders for a wider and more powerful swing. In turn if your hands are hanging too low you are not allowing your arms and chest to free up during the golf swing.

Chest It is sometimes wrong to say that your chest should be pointing towards the target when at your finish. Making sure you have full shoulder turn back and through to your finish, is great for driving the ball a greater distance. But this isn’t to be forced; the object is to make sure you finish every single golf swing naturally.

GOLF

Approach 2012 Driver Hotlist TaylorMade R11S Driver TaylorMade took an already successful predecessor, the R11, and made minor tweaks that will give you more foregiveness and a tad more ball speed. You have the shape of the crown along with the infamous white matte finish looks great behind the ball and with the graphics on the crown, they actually frame the ball nicely giving you confidence when facing that narrow par 4. It is also a great sounding driver which most TaylorMade drivers are; no tings and not muted more of an in between sound.

Pros TaylorMade did the smartest thing possible by not trying to reinvent the wheel. With the R11 being one of the the most successful drivers in the history of golf they decided to do the best thing possible, make it better. They took the previous R11 and improved upon it by making minor tweaks to increase both distance and accuracy.

Cons The white paint seems to have become a love it or hate it topic – especially if you want that traditional black driver.

Overall, It has everything you would want in a driver. Great shape, a lot of forgiveness, and TONS of adjustability to fit virtually anyone. Combine that will the ability to swap shafts on a whim and what you have is a real winner.

Ping i20 Driver Reminiscent of other legendary deep-faced drivers, the I20 is more forgiving and retains freakishly low spin numbers, while maintaining high ball speed numbers across the face. Ping driver fans have long lamented the passing of the Rapture V2. The i20 has everything needed to make them forget. Low spin with a piercing trajectory for the stronger player, this driver is forgiving, sufficiently workable and as deep as anything on the market. A low density titanium alloy saves weight to allow Ping engineers to strategically place tungsten weights to increase forgiveness while optimizing

Pros Ping touts this driver as the low-spin , lower launching companion to the G20 driver. Check. Tungsten weights provide a higher MOI and increased forgiveness. At address, the 460cc head sets up much smaller and the matte black finish is wonderfully inconspicuous. This driver just begs to be hit.

COG for low, penetrating tee shots. The classically shaped head is 460cc and utilizes improved aerodynamics to promote increased swing speed and ball velocity. The matte black finish is unique and purposeful. In a market dominated by adjustability, Ping makes quite a case that a driver doesn’t have to require a toolbox.

Cons This is the not the driver for someone who struggles to elevate the ball or wants adjustability. While delivering a nice penetrating trajectory, this is not the ball flight everyone likes to see and if you are in search of the high-launch/low-spin combination, other drivers might serve your needs better.

GOLF

Callaway RAZR Fit Driver Callaways first venture into the adjustable weight and face angle driver category.

very very solid sounding. The ball shots off the face and you know instantly where you hit it.

Out the box the driver comes loaded with 12g and 2g removable weights in the sole in the toe and heel positions. Face angle is adjustable from S (standard) C (closed 1.5 degrees) and O (Open 2.5 degrees).

The Razr combines the best combination of looks, forgiveness and distance performance seen to date in a driver and was worth the wait.

In addition, the RAZR fit also has the latest technology in a newly designed and optimized hyperbolic face. This new face is designed to maintain ball speeds outside of the main sweetspot and work with the new overall weighting redesign of the head. In terms of the feeling,iIt’s not loud, it’s not overly muted..Just

Pros · Clean design from address (no alignment aids) · Face is adjustable and it’s noticeable when changed · The face angle is adjustable independent of shaft rotation

Cons · Less adjustments than competitors · Designed for shaft · .350 sleeve

Titleist 920 D2 & D3 Drivers Titleist 910 D2 &D3 Drivers Titleist thrilled us all with it’s 905 series, the R in particular but have since been slightly underwhelming by their own high standards. Titleist have shown that they are able to remain true to their better player roots while offering something more to the average player.

Pros Reliable directional forgiveness; face compensates well for misses left or right of center. Top-notch performer; offers creative players more workability than most; adjustability is perfect prescription for finding a consistent ball flight. Best in show; classic beauty disguises its size; fulcrum alignment aid is helpful; black finish with contrasting white scoring lines frames the ball.

58

But with COR limits being enforced, head technology set at 460cc and the Sure-Fit option available this is a driver that you could have in your bag for a very long time and that always helps offset the initial cost.

Validation from Tour players has been exceptional too; Ross Fisher, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy have all put the 910 in play and almost as tellingly, a host of die-hard 905 fans who previously stayed away from the 907 and 909 have put the a 910 in the bag. It’s premium in every way and that includes the price; especially if you choose one of the higher end custom shaft options.

Cons Proves to be too demanding for some mid-handicappers; not the most forgiving of the bunch.

10 Sectrets to Cooking Healthier Easy ways to make your everyday meals healthier and tastier. If your eating habits are anything like those of most people and you are looking for the simplest advice possible we would tell you to eat more vegetables, fruits and whole grains andless of just about everything else. But if you’re ready for just a bit more guidance, our 10 principles of healthy cooking will get you started.

1. Use Smart Fats

2. Go Unrefined

Not all fat is bad. Opt for unsaturated (e.g., olive oil) over saturated fats such as butter. But still use them in moderation because all fats are loaded with calories.

Pick whole grains over refined grains. Whole grains like brown rice and bulgur have their bran intact and thus have more fiber, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc and other nutrients.

3. Eat More Fruits and Vegetables Most people don’t get enough! Aim for 4 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Pick produce in a variety of colors to get a range of antioxidants and vitamins. A serving size is 1/2 to 1 cup depending on the fruit or vegetable.

64

HEALTH & WELLNESS

4. It’s Not All About the Meat Meat is a great source of protein but it’s also a big source of saturated fat in many people’s diets. So eat small amounts of lean meat, fish and poultry. Fill up the rest of your plate with healthy vegetables and whole grains.

5. Choose Low-Fat Dairy

6. Keep Portions Reasonable

7. Use Sweeteners Judiciously

Dairy products like milk, sour cream and yogurt are a good source of calcium. Replacing whole-milk dairy products with low-fat or nonfat is an easy way to cut saturated fat in your diet.

Even though we would all like a magic bullet for weight control, it really boils down to calories. One of the easiest ways to manage calorie intake is by eating healthy portions.

Sugars of any kind, whether corn syrup, white sugar, brown sugar, honey or maple syrup, add significant calories without any nutritive value.

8. Keep an Eye on Sodium

9. Go For the Flavor

10. Be Mindful and Enjoy

Whether you have high blood pressure or not, it’s wise to watch your sodium intake. The USDA’s dietary guidelines for Americans recommend consuming less than 2,300 mg (about 1 teaspoon salt) daily.

Enhance food with bold flavors from healthy ingredients like fresh herbs, spices and citrus. When your food has great flavor, there’s no reason to feel deprived.

Make conscious food decisions rather than grabbing for what is most convenient. Make sure it is something delicious and savor it. When you enjoy what you eat, you feel satisfied.

APPROACH REAL ESTATE

REAL ESTATE

REAL ESTATE TALK It seems like only yesterday that all eyes were fixed on London in anticipation of the countdown for the opening ceremony and subsequent games for the 2012 Olympics. There were more than 10,000 athletes from 204 different nations. Acceleration, strength and confidence were the name of the game. With an approximate price tag of 9.3 billion Pounds, the opening ceremony had to be spectacular – and it was. Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle – famous for such cult classics as Trainspotting and

the epic Slumdog Millionaire – masterminded the opening ceremony, which focused on the period of the Industrial Revolution that emerged from within Great Britain. Talking of revolutions, that appears to be exactly what we are observing right now in the property market in the entertainment-packed beach resort and golfers’ paradise of Hua Hin here in South-east Asia. After some years of stagnation in the property sector, with many developers and resale owners feeling inclined to offer, for example, large discounts, finance options and free furniture packages just to get people through their doors, confidence is back. What’s more, acceleration and

strength in numbers of both new property and new clients are both clearly evident within the property sector. What are the reasons for the sudden upturn in the property market? Who knows? Maybe, clients that have always dreamed of owning a place under Thailand’s tropical sun and enjoying the favourable year-round warm climate have come to a decision: it’s now or never. Perhaps, investors who have experience investing in, and observing, foreign currencies, which have been waiting for the Thai Baht to weaken and the Pound and Euro for example, to strengthen, may have decided to make a move.

72

REAL ESTATE

After all, there are no signs of economic recovery on the European horizon. This may be the case. It may not. Nevertheless, one fact is for sure: the property market in Hua Hin is strong. And, it shows no signs whatsoever of weakening, only of increasing in strength. The rental market is the strongest it has been since 2006. Real estate companies in Hua Hin are complaining that they simply don’t have enough rental property to offer their clients. The same situation applies to properties for sale in Hua Hin. There just isn’t enough. Dominant companies like Hot Property, Century 21 and Hua Hin’s largest real

73

estate company, Hua Hin Property, have all commented that demand for sales is far outstripping supply. Acceleration, strength and confidence are creating a constant supply of clients. That supply shows no signs of slowing. The property market in Hua Hin continues to go from strength to strength. The revolution continues.

Where to start? Simple – at the beginning. Do your research. Then do some more research. Forewarned is forearmed because the more knowledge you gather about your destination, property, laws and customs, the safer you will be. You will need to study the laws regarding purchasing property in Thailand. You need to know what you can do and what you cannot do. OK, let’s get started. You have decided what house you want to buy.. You have seen photos of the property on a real estate website. You have decided that you will live in the property parttime and that you want to rent it out for a passive income. So, time to contact the real estate company.

You should ask as many questions as possible about the property.

For example, is the property on a completed development? If it is not completed what is the probable completion time? How long has the development been under construction? Is it possible it may never be completed and you end up spending your annual holidays on a dirty, smelly, noisy construction site? What kind of construction warranty will be provided? Who will be my neighbours? Could there be a military shooting range nearby? Where is the water sourced? Who manages the communal facilities like security, refuse collection, shuttle services? How is the property currently owned? Is it in a company and if so is that company a legitimate trading company or a ‘shelf company’ set up solely with the purpose of putting the land in the name of

the company to overcome Thai law? If you decide that buying the property in the name of a ‘shelf company’ is risky and not for you, you must take out a lease on the land, but, is the seller able to give a lease? Does the land have an allocation license enabling the land to be transferred into a Thai name who will then offer the lease? Does the land have a mortgage on it? Is the seller the actual owner of the land or someone simply acting on behalf of someone else? Is there a construction permit for the house on which the land sits? What costs are involved regarding taxes and transfer fees? And so on. And you can see, outlined above are just a few of the many questions that need to be answered before parting with your hard-earned life savings when buying property in

“Do it the correct way. Do not cut corners. Then you will only have to do the job once.” Thailand. The objective here is not to frighten buyers away. But, simply, to make them understand that buying property in another company may be completely different and more complex than it is in their country of origin. Therefore, consulting a reputable, experienced, real estate company with many years’ experience in property in Thailand, could well safeguard your investment, answer the questions above along with many others, and more importantly, give you complete peace of mind. Do it the correct way. Do not cut corners. Then you will only have to do the job once. So, all I have to do is put all my trust in a real estate agent then I am guaranteed my dream home – correct? No, not correct.

Any reputable real estate, after they have helped you source a property that fits your budget, style, and specific purpose, should then recommend that you employ an independent lawyer. An independent lawyer will not only check that the contract you are about to sign is a contract that is in your best interests, but they will also check the person selling the property is allowed to sell it. They will also check there is no mortgage on the land. That the land has a proper title and that there are no roads due to be built in your back yard. There is one final step to put in place. And, that responsibility is down to you – due diligence. What can I do because I do not know much about property in Thailand? Well, for example, you could ask other people what their opinion is of the property,

development or developer that you are about to buy from. Also, you can look on the Internet and even knock on the neighbours’ doors near the property that you want to buy. It is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of the steps and questions that need to be addressed before buying property in an article as brief as this. However, if you follow the guidelines above, you will certainly give yourself the very best chance of buying the best property that will suit you. And, more importantly, you will be investing in a property that you will be more than happy with.

Feng Shui your Home

Originating in China almost 6,000 years ago, feng shui literally means “wind” (feng) and “water” (shui). It is an ancient method of constructing and optimizing residences to bring about happiness, abundance and harmony. Feng shui includes architecture, urban planning, interior design, garden design, and placement of objects in our environment. It also involves the layout, framework, materials and colors of building structures.

Once you clear most of your clutter with feng shui and have a clear system to avoid its accumulation in the future, you will start experiencing high energy levels, more clarity, and a heightened sense of wellbeing.

Getting started with feng shui for your home can be easy when you start with the house basics and gradually move on to the more complex feng shui levels. To help you get started with good feng shui in your home, here are some helpful feng shui house steps for beginners:

The main areas I recommend you start to clear your clutter with feng shui (and always keep fresh and clean!) are the following: Your Bedroom. We are most influenced by things, events, and people that are closest to us, so it is absolutely logical (and highly advisable) to first start applying feng shui to clear the clutter in your bedroom.

1. Clear Out Your Clutter Get rid of everything you do not love in your house. Clutter Clearing is a time-and energyconsuming process that will feel like therapy, but it will help you “lighten up the load,” so to speak. Do not skip this step, as it is an essential one in creating harmonious house feng shui energy.

Your Kitchen. In feng shui, the state of your kitchen is the state of your health, especially the state of your liver. Liver is the main detoxifying organ in the body. So do your liver and your health a big favor and clean up and de-clutter that kitchen! Your Front Entrance. Your front entrance is the way your house gets its energy nourishment. In feng shui, the front door is called

the mouth of Chi, or energy. Upon the entrance to every space your energy is looking for grounding and focus, so do treat your senses respectfully and provide for a visual relief. Create a fresh pathway for strong vibrant Chi to flow into your home and nourish your energy.

2. Have Good Quality Air and Good Quality Light in your house These two elements are essential for good feng shui energy (called Chi) in your home. Open the windows often, introduce feng shui air-purifying plants or use an air-purifier. Allow as much natural light as possible into your home, and consider using full-spectrum lights.

3. Define the Ba-Gua Ba-Gua is the feng shui energy map of your house, by using one of the two main feng shui methods - the compass or

the BTB grid. Once you define the ba-gua, you will know which areas of your home are connected to specific areas of your life. For example, in traditional feng shui, the Southeast feng shui area of your home is connected to the flow of money energy in your life.

4. Study the Five Elements Feng Shui Theory This helps you balance the feng shui five elements in your home, as well as strengthen specific elements in specific feng shui areas. For example, if you are working on attracting more prosperity, you will introduce the feng shui elements of Wood and Water in the Southeast area of your home.

5. Know Your Feng Shui Birth Element and create a home to support your personal feng shui element For example, if your own element is Fire, you need to introduce the expressions of Fire feng shui element, such as the Fire element colors (red, orange, purple, magenta, pink, yellow), triangular shapes, etc. You will also need a strong Wood element in your home, as Wood feeds the Fire in the relationship of five feng shui elements.

6. Know Your Kua Number Position yourself so that you benefit throughout the day from your best, or lucky feng shui directions. Adjust the position of your bed, your desk, the seating in your dining area, etc. For example, if your Kua number is 1, it is best to face one of the following directions: Southeast, East, South, and North.

85

7. Always Be Mindful of the State of Your Home and how the energy in your home influences your wellbeing Make a habit of paying close attention to the so-called feng shui “triangle that is deeply connected to your health - your bedroom, your bathroom and your kitchen. Nothing is static in the world of energy, so be wise and keep your home healthy and happy. After you have mastered the seven home feng shui steps, you can explore the deeper levels of feng shui, such as, for example, the flying star school of feng shui. Be sure to start with the basic steps, though, before applying complex feng shui formulas.

Good fellowship is one of the key aspects that draws visitors to Rotary, and in addition to our weekly meetings and other events such as social outings, fundraising golf tournaments and concerts, Rotarians have the open door to visit other Rotary Clubs and participate in district assemblies, conferences and training seminars.

Before There have always been positive experiences for many Rotarians who attended other Clubs’ meetings, Installation Dinners and the Rotary International Convention. These are great opportunities to meet old and new friends, and exchange ideas and information on projects, fundraising events, and just to see how other Clubs operate. The RCRHH conducts environmental preservation activities such as quarterly beach clean-ups to help keep Hua Hin’s coastal areas clean and special outings are organized for students to learn about humanity’s impact on the environment and gain a greater respect for nature and the world we live in.
