Funny how so many health issues change almost daily. Holistic Health, an American online health network sends me updates on health issues almost every day. A few days ago they announced that drinking milk was more harmful to your body than smoking or how to cure Alzheimer within a few days….if you click on “more” a medical person will start explaining the theme. They never come to the point or revelation, but after a good 15 minutes of watching the announcement they suddenly tell you that you can buy all the answers for only US $49.99 which is a more than 50% discount from the original price. Anyway a glass of good vintage red wine is good for health and a quick beer on a hot day has never harmed anyone. Cow milk is debateable, depending on how it is treated but then the same goes for vegetables and fruit grown under a spray of insecticides, and is organic real organic or just make believe with a price increase. As the French say: “On y soit qui mal y pense” if you care, but then again “ un home averti en vaut deux”. Anybody ever took a look at the Mahasamutr project. An unbelievably crystal clear lake surrounded by amazing villas and an even more amazing clubhouse. There was a soft opening in February with lots of fun activities…. A clubhouse with fitness, restaurant, for having a relaxed fun day. Outside memberships are available. Villas start at 40 million. House owners get a life membership at the Banyan Golf Club I was told. Don’t hold me to it, as recycled teenagers as I may have not heard it correctly. Memberships for True Arena at the top of Soi 112, are available. It includes the use of the fitness centre and rooftop pool, but the use of the tennis courts has to be paid for in addition. The Maria restaurant is very pleasant and the food nice and reasonably priced. Try it out, restaurant manager Jeow and his team will gladly host you.

THAI ADVENTURE RAFTING

N

orth and west of the capital, is a region that for centuries has been the store room of the nation’s food. Its rivers especially the Nan and the Ping, whose waters irrigate the northern plains before merging to form the Chao Phraya, slowly merge south through Bangkok and out into the Gulf of Thailand. Further west, the Mae Khlong River sustains the many market gardens and fills the canals that dominate the hinterlands at Samut Songkhram, where you can find most of the authentic floating markets in the country. The town of Kanchanaburi has long attracted visitors to the notorious Bridge over the River Kwai and is now well established as a travellers’ hangout. On the plains north of Bangkok, the historic heartland of the country, the major sites are the ruined ancient cities, most of which are conserved as historical parks. The town of Mae Sot makes a refreshing change from ancient history and is the departure point for the rivers and waterfalls of Umphang, a remote border region that’s becoming increasingly 18

FOODS OF THAILAND

Snacks Serving Sauce: Mix 2 tablespoons of sweet chilli sauce with 2 tablespoons Sriracha sauce, and place in a small dish to serve with hoi tod.

Hoy Tod

Hoy Tod is typically a small dish and it’s enjoyed all day long. Mussels are common in Thailand and served in a variety of dishes, often on pizza among the various pizza chains. First of all, this isn’t really an omelette in the strictest sense, some even translate hoy tod as oyster pancakes. Instead, it’s a lethal combination of eggs, oysters, garlic, chili, green onions, and even a bit of coriander. Somehow the forces of these simple ingredients combine into something magnificently rich and complex. Soft, briny oysters are bonded by the sweet chili to the crackling, battery-egg mixture. Fireworks explode.

Spring Rolls

Spring rolls are a large variety of filled, rolled appetizers or dim sum found in East Asian and Southeast Asian cuisine. The name is a literal translation of the Chinese chūn juǎn. The kind of wrapper, fillings, and cooking technique used, as well as the name, vary considerably within this large area, depending on the region’s culture. A Thai spring roll is different from a Chinese spring roll in that it is typically smaller and contains ground or chopped meats/seafood such as pork, crab, shrimp, chicken, taro or cassava, glass noodle, wood-ear fungi or oyster mushrooms and shredded carrots. 22

Guay Tiew Lod are delicious flat and wide noodle rolls wrapped around an amazing filling: pork, mushrooms, squid and beansprouts, with tiny dried shrimp embedded in them. The rolls are usually eaten with a mixture of soy sauce, fried garlic, and scallion. Some of the best Guay Tiew Lod can be bought in stalls on Yaowarat Road, in Bangkok’s Chinatown.

Kanom Jeeb It was during this period, from 1809 - 1824, that Royal Thai cuisine was approaching its peak - a time when the preparation of food in the country was proudly revered and practiced as an art. The intricate hand-pinched folds in the famous “Kanom Jeeb Thai” dumplings were once described by King Rama II as reminiscent of the soft flowing ripples in a Thai female’s traditional attire. Using a pair of tweezers called a ‘Nab’ in Thai, each and every kanom jeeb dumpling is crafted by patiently nipping the dough until evenly pinched ribs surround the the entire pastry. Kanom means snack, something you eat out of the meal, usually sweet but salty snacks are called kanom too. Jeeb in this case mean pleat, which is what we do to the corners of the wrapper to created a nice pleated corners. March 2016 APPROACH

THAI NATURE

The

BLUE PEACOCK Pavo cristatus

By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

T

he drag of the males, consists of very highly elongated, one to one and a half meter long upper tail coverts. These can be placed into a fan-shaped wheel. The plastically glowing pen drawing of large, blue iridescent “eyes should deter predators that these are interpreted as eyes of large mammals. If this is not enough to defeat an attacker, the rooster puts the range of tail feathers in a loud rattling movement. The actual tail is about 40 to 45 cm shorter. He is brown and consists of several stages arranged feathers. The glimmer of feather rays is achieved by a fine crystal like structure, which is constructed in grid form. This surrounds the feather ends and is arranged so that they reflect light, similar to shiny bubbles or oil stains on water puddles at different view angles. The structures are made of melamine and keratin.

The impressive feathers of the rooster with the conspicuous coverts is called in the behavioural biology, as a visual ornament and is virtually an indicator of its genetic fitness. Although the long drag is generally more of a hindrance and causes a reduction of aerial movements, after the so-called handicap principle, but it is this very circumstance, for the females during mating, an indication of healthy, viable offspring. Both sexes have a small feather crown on the vertex. The roosters are with tail drag about two meters long and weigh four to six kilograms. The hens are in comparison considerably smaller and less conspicuous drawn , its body length is only about one meter. They weigh 2.7 to 4 kg. Their plumage is predominantly greenish grey. The females are without a drag.

THAI NATURE

Reproduction Peafowls are polygamous birds. They live in small family groups consisting of a rooster and several hens, along with the accompanying fledglings. The propagation time is region- and weather permitting, from April to August. During this period all roosters have three to five hens flocking around him.

Senses The blue Peafowl has a highly developed olfactory and auditory sense. In addition, he is very vigilant and warns with loud, piercing cries, other animals in advance of dangers. In India, the sounds are interpreted with “minh ao”, which means “rain comes!”.

Distribution and habitat The blue Peafowl is originally from the Indian subcontinent. He lives preferably in hilly terrain in the jungle, especially near water. Some foraging blue peacocks come in the mornings and evening hours in family groups to the fields. Since blue peacocks eat young snakes, they are popular in parts of India and are tolerated in the villages. There they can be very trusting. According to the „International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources”, the stock of peacocks decreased in recent times, but the species is in parts of its habitat still as “often “ classified, so that the blue peacock is estimated as” not at risk “. Already 4,000 years ago the first peacocks were taken to the Mediterranean. The meat was among the Egyptians, the Romans, and in medieval Europe, where it was often served very spicy, very popular. Since the peacock is spatial fidelity, he is kept free in many parks. In the domestication several forms resulted, such as the black feathered peafowl and the white peafowl

The rooster then selects a territory which he occupies and defends against other roosters. During the extensive courtship the male peafowl presents its magnificent feather fan tail. He repeatedly shakes its feathers which produce a loud rustle sound. He turns his back to the hen repeatedly, once she approaches him. This peculiar behaviour is repeated until the hen is laying down in front of the rooster and he then mates. Immediately after mating, the hens start their breeding procedures and looking for a suitable place to lay their eggs. They build their nests near the forest edges in dense undergrowth. A clutch usually consists of 4-6, a maximum of 8 eggs. The eggs of peacocks are bright white to delicate yellowish. The hens incubate the eggs for a period of about 28-30 days. The nest is only left for ingestion and to drink. The hatched chicks grow slowly and keep preferably under the tail of the mother. The young chicks have a bright, Isabell brown nest- or down plumage. On the top side the plumage is darker. After one month, the chicks get their crown. As young birds, the male peafowl are coloured similar to the female peacock. At the age of three years, the males get their brilliant plumage and the magnificent drag tail, whose full length is achieved only at the age of six. After 2-3 years they reach sexual maturity.

Foes Besides tigers and leopards, which are its natural enemies, the peafowl was in its original native habitat India, a source of meat and therefore a popular housemate.

Ability to fly Despite its size and the long tail, peacocks can fly, but neither far nor high. In case of danger, they rise into the air, to escape into the bushes or looking for protection on a tree. On trees, they spend the night in order to be protected from predators. March 2016 APPROACH

Why Some Rich People Are Loathe to

T

he slowdown in China has brought many problems, not least exposing the $7.2 bn (yes billion) Ponzi scheme set up as a peer to peer lending investment. These frauds are not limited to emerging markets, we’ve had Bernie Madoff in the US and more recently a currency trading and carbon credit based schemes in Europe. They all have a few things in common; 1) they claim to be investing in new ways such as peer to peer lending, 2) they offer very high returns, 1% per week, 15% per annum guaranteed and 3) they are never offered by main stream regulated organisations. Many successful people feel they don’t want to listen to a broker who may not display the outward signs of wealth. Famously, Bono’s financial adviser said he never understood why rich people took financial advice from

poor people. That attitude is perfectly understandable but it is based on a misunderstanding. Many clients understand how to make money better than I do, however, our role as advisers is mostly preserving capital not making it. This is especially true of the HENRYs (high earning but not rich yet) I recently met a wealthy friend who is investing in a third world peer to peer company that appears to have dazzled him. In spite of my decades of experience, I have found it really difficult to talk sense into him. More than eighty percent of his portfolio has been invested in this single peer to peer lender. To most people this would not appear sensible yet he believes my concerns are misplaced. I can only think he believes I am not truly independent as my firm

arranges other types of investments or that he is more experienced in making money than I am. Of course I hope that the investment flourishes and he gets out before my fears materialize. Any investment where there isn’t consumer protection and which limited liquidity is always of concern to me. Higher than market “guaranteed” returns ring an alarm bell. Even if you know the person or firm selling the “investment” you should be cautious. Bernie Madoff was an honest upright man before being exposed. If you want to take risk there are lots of ways to do this safely – investing in shares – for example Netflix (entertainment) +111 % Abiomed (Healthcare) +143% Dyoon Industries (Industrials) +113% Cambrex (Healthcare) +103% That’s just 2015 returns.

THAI LEGAL

Overstay in

of

Thailand

In general: Children under the age of 15 do not get charged the fine for overstay but they do get overstay stamps. There have been no changes. Children under the age of 18 are also exempt from being banned for overstaying under the new rules. However, parents can get fined 2,000 Baht for not reporting their stay in Thailand every 90 days as they are required to do.

Thai Citizenship: If both parents are non-Thai, the baby does not qualify for Thai citizenship. Foreign parents have to apply at the embassy of their home country to obtain a foreign passport for the baby. If one of the parents are Thai the new-born can be registered as a Thai citizen, but alternatively the baby can be registered as a citizen of the foreign parent country. British twins that were born in Bangkok, were issued a Thai birth certificate with many more details than that of a UK certificate including a Thai ID number and star sign. When translated for the British embassy for the passports, it states in the right hand corner of the certificate. “Not entitled to Thai Nationality”. They do not have a British birth certificate but do have British passports based on the certified translation. When they get older however, and if they have never lived in the home country of the parents, and marry another foreign citizen who was not born there either, they would have to prove to their embassy in whatever country they choose to live that their children are 36

APPROACH March 2016

Children

entitled to their citizenship though, which means you have to make sure they have copies of their birth certificates for them to register our future grandchildren’s birth.

Last but not least: A birth in Thailand is legally recognised

under Thai Law only if it has been registered at the District Office. Birth registration must take place within 30 days of the birth. In Bangkok the name for the District Office is “Khet”, but in the rest of Thailand it is known as “Amphur”, sometimes spelt “Amphoe”. The birth can be registered by the mother and father or by the mother alone. On completion of the birth registration a copy of the birth certificate is given to the parents. The birth certificate will be printed in Thai and a translation may be required to register the child with the embassy of the parent’s native country.

FINANCIAL REGULATORY AUTHORITIES

FINANCIAL

What is the role of a financial regulator?

F

inancial regulation is a form of regulation or supervision, which subjects financial institutions to certain requirements, restrictions and guidelines, aiming to maintain the integrity of the financial system. This may be handled by either a government or non-government organization. Financial regulation has also influenced the structure of banking sectors, by decreasing borrowing costs and increasing the variety of financial products available. The European Banking Authority (EBA) is a regulatory agency of the European Union headquartered in London, United Kingdom. Its activities include conducting stress tests on European banks to increase transparency in the European financial system and identifying weaknesses in banks’ capital structures.

The EBA has the power to overrule The EBA has the power to overrule national regulators if they fail to properly regulate their banks. The EBA is able to prevent regulatory arbitrage and should allow banks to compete fairly throughout the EU. The main task of the EBA is to contribute, through the adoption of binding Technical Standards (BTS) and Guidelines, to the creation of the European Single Rulebook in banking. The Single Rulebook aims at providing a single set of harmonised prudential rules for financial institutions throughout the EU, helping create a level playing field and providing high protection to depositors, investors and consumers. In Thailand, the market surveillance of the securities market is conducted by the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), 38

which is in turn supervised by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The Bank of Thailand (BoT) supervises the banks and finance companies. Ultimately, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) supervises all aspects of the Thai financial markets. The Asian financial crisis was a period of financial crisis that gripped much of East Asia beginning in July 1997 and raised fears of a worldwide economic meltdown. The crisis started in Thailand with the financial collapse of the Thai baht after the Thai government was forced to float the baht due to lack of foreign currency to support its currency peg to the U.S. dollar. At the time, Thailand had acquired a burden of foreign debt that made the country effectively bankrupt even before the collapse of its currency. The IMF stepped in to initiate a $40 billion program to stabilize the currencies of South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia, economies particularly hard hit by the crisis. The economies of Southeast Asia in particular maintained high interest rates attractive to foreign investors looking for a high rate of return. As a result, the region’s economies received a large inflow of money and experienced a dramatic run-up in asset prices. At the same time, the regional economies of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and South Korea experienced high growth rates, 8–12% GDP, in the late 1980s and early 1993. This achievement was widely acclaimed by financial institutions including IMF and World Bank, and was known as part of the “Asian economic miracle”.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Staying Healthy & Live Longer 1. Optimize Vitamin D

4. Eat more raw food

It holds the number one position to avoid getting sick. If you have vitamin D deficiency, then the immune system won’t activate to do the job. Vitamin D functions in many tissues and also affects the large number of health conditions and different diseases.

Chemically altered and denatured foods( genetically modified foods) may cause diseases. Choose the foods carefully and try to eat 80% of raw food that include raw eggs as well as natural, organically raised meats not treated with insecticides.

Studies proved that Vitamin D helps to decrease the risk of cancer and a lower risk of most common diseases like heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension and depression by simply optimizing the level of Vitamin D.

5. Cope effectively with stress Stress is the serious chronic illness that plays major role in the health conditions. Researches found that stress damages the heart and immune system. It also increases the chances of bacterial infection contraction like tuberculosis.

6. Have more friends Socially isolated person may experience a shorter life span and poor health.

7. Stay PH balanced 2. Optimize leptin and Insulin levels

According to the alternative medicine practitioners, the human body is always healthiest when its functions midway between completely alkaline and completely acidic.

Regular exercise improves circulation of immune cells in the blood.

Lowering the PH levels may cause acidosis, confusion, raid breathing, stomach problems and fatigue. Just include more dark leafy greens, asparagus, carrots and green beans in the diet and other alkalizing foods including avocados, coconuts and cucumbers.

It helps to neutralize pathogens throughout the body and helps to decrease the risk of health conditions including cancer, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression and dementia.

It is scientifically proven that an occasional glass of beer or red wine is good for your health and mind.

Grains and eating sugar increases the insulin level which makes you get sick more quickly and accelerates aging. The Leptin is a heavyweight hormone associated with the aging process and disease. Optimizing the leptin and insulin levels increases the chances to live healthier and longer life.

Meditation & Yoga in

7

Easy Steps

Meditation has been used for many purposes–from calming and healing physical, emotional, and mental stress to experiencing higher levels of consciousness and achieving self-realization. The stretching exercises that are associated with yoga were originally designed thousands of years ago to help the practitioner gain control of their own life force, a spiritual energy known as kundalini. When this energy rises from the base of the spine up through the top of the head, an expanded state of awareness, called selfrealization, can be achieved.

With practice, a self realized person can feel not only his or her own kundalini as it moves between the 7 primary energy centres (chakras) of their body, they will also be able to experience “collective consciousness” -- an advanced awareness in which they can feel the spiritual energy of anyone they put their attention on.

1. Find a quiet place to be alone for 5 - 10 minutes for meditation 2. Sit upright in a chair or on the floor, but not too rigidly, remove your shoes and keep your feet slightly apart. Have the palms of both hands open on your knees. 3. Close your eyes. Become aware of your surroundings, then direct your attention inside, to the base of your spine. Slowly pull your attention up through the centre of your body along the spinal column, until it comes to rest on the top of your head and slightly forward to the place where the soft spot was when you were a baby. 4. Keeping your eyes closed firmly press the palm of your right hand onto this soft spot on your head, then raise your right hand about six inches above your head, palm down. Move it up and down slightly until you locate an energy between your head and your hand. You may feel it on your palm either as cool or warm. 5. Keep your attention where your hand is over your head, then bring the hand back on to your lap. You may repeat step 4 using your left hand, as one hand may be more sensitive than the other. 6. Sit like this for 5 - 10 minutes, in mental silence. If a thought pops up, just watch it rise and fall, or say either, “I forgive” or “Not now”. 7. Slowly open your eyes at the end of your meditation. Become aware of any change you may feel inside your body or any shift in your attention. Meditate twice a day for best results. Keep a meditation journal. The meditation should be without effort, don’t try, just be - the idea is to stay in the pure moment of the present. 44

KIDS & EDUCATION

Hua Hin for the Young No matter if you are a kid, a teen, a grown up or a recycled teenager, there is a lot of fun to experience in Hua Hin

Things to do in Hua Hin for kids Sailing

Water Sports Hua Hin is synonymous with water sports. Parasailing and windsurfing are particularly popular, aided by strong north-easterly winds. Major hotels hire out equipment and provide lessons in these sports as well. Other water sports include jet-skiing and water-skiing.

The Gulf of Thailand is popular with the yachting set, and Hua Hin features several yacht charter operators offering their services. Hua Hin nevertheless attracts more Europeans interested in sailing each season. Sail boats can be hired with or without crew, and the numerous nearby offshore islands are popular destinations for day cruises. www.huahinsailing.com | Call: 0878887565

Some of the best fun your family can have on the water is to go on a banana boat ride together. The inflatable ‘boat’ is pulled along by a speedboat, which provides a fast, bumpy and twisty ride that’s sure to bring excitement, laughs, and maybe a spill or two. Numerous operators can be found along Hua Hin beaches.

Banana Boat Rides JWS Motorsport is located opposite Hua Hin’s new airport, and its go-kart track is immensely popular with Thai and foreign families. The setting itself, with a backdrop of mountains and beachfront nearby, is spectacular. The facility’s track is 750m in length and features a challenging layout that includes a highspeed, banked curve. Karts are on offer that will suit all driver ages and abilities as well as double karts, allowing an adult to drive and a younger child to enjoy the thrill as a passenger. Instructors are available and full safety equipment is provided. There are floodlights for evening rides and a beer garden and dining facilities on the premises. www.gokarthuahhin.com | Phone: +66 32 547 199.

KIDS & EDUCATION

Kitesurfing

Recently, both kiteboarding and kitesurfing have become extremely popular in Hua Hin. Two schools offer kitesurfing lessons and the steady thermal winds of March and April bring droves of kitesurfing enthusiasts to this resort. The conditions here are considered ideal, as the ocean floor is quite flat and shallow for some distance from the shore.

Tennis

Most of the better hotels and resorts feature facilities for playing tennis. Although most reserve their courts for paying guests, prices vary from 150 Baht to 250 Baht, some allow non-residents to play for a fee. Equipment and lessons are available, but it’s a good idea to try reserving a court and equipment at least a day or so in advance. The early morning and late afternoon are the best times to play, as the temperatures are more pleasant and the sun isn’t too strong. The brand new TRUE ARENA on Soi 112 has 11 Tennis courts waiting to be played on! There is a Restaurant”Maria” waiting to quench thirst after a game!

There’s family fun to be had all around Hua Hin. Starting with the beaches where children can enjoy the sand and water in safety to the well-equipped parks and playgrounds, parents will be pleased with the facilities on offer. There are cycling paths that everyone in the family can enjoy and banana boats rides on the water for thrill-seeking young ones. Elephants and horseback rides are available and are often a highlight of a visit to Hua Hin.

Kids Clubs The Hua Hin mayor hotels offer special leisure play clubs for younger guests at their supervised Kid Clubs. Young travellers and residents alike from 4 to 12 years can enjoy the toys, games and arts and crafts activities on offer here. In addition, some have their supervised swimming and other fun filled activities. Save up to 30% on Fuel Consumption and Increase Output A hydrogen vehicle is a vehicle that uses hydrogen as its on-board fuel for motive power. Hydrogen vehicles include hydrogen fuelled space rockets, as well as automobiles and other transportation vehicles. The power plants of such vehicles convert the chemical energy of hydrogen to mechanical energy either by burning hydrogen in an internal combustion engine. Widespread use of hydrogen for fuelling transportation is a key element of a proposed hydrogen economy. H2 AQUAPOWER HYDROGEN TECHNOLOGY has developed a patented Energy and Environmental Innovation unit which produces hydrogen from pure water and feeds it on demand to a combustion engine´s intake manifold of a motorcar´s engine. Aqua power H2 generates hydrogen gas from H2O and considerably increases the octane value of the fuel mixture to an approximate 140 versus 95 of petrol or 85 of Diesel fuel. It is a completely safe process with importantly reduced emissions.

MOTORING

The most famous cars of Television & Movies What might be the most memorable car from cinema and television? BACK TO THE FUTURE Back to the Future. The modified 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 with its gull-wing doors and brushed stainless-steel body, was iconic in its own right, and then immortalised in the 1985. Doc and Marty McFly drove (and eventually flew) the DeLorean through space and time, powered by its Flux Capacitor. Only about 9,000 original DMC-12s were built, but the movie has contributed immeasurably to the car’s outsize legend.

JAMES BOND James Bond Goldfinger & James Bond – Spectre - One of the most quintessential cinema vehicles comes not from one movie, but from more than 50 years of filmmaking. James Bond films have featured a variety of Aston Martin sports cars since 1964, when Sean Connery first piloted a DB5 in Goldfinger. Since then, Aston Martins have appeared in nearly a dozen of the 007 films, and the automaker recently announced it would make 10 special DB10s apropos of the next James Bond film, Spectre.

GHOSTBUSTERS Ghostbusters - Another gem comes from New York City. The Ghostbusters 1959 Cadillac Ecto-1, an instant classic from the 1984 film. Though it’s better known for sloshing round bends on its softly sprung, Miller Meteor chassis than for out-and-out chases, the ambulance earned its immortality for shepherding four world-saving ghoul-hunters round the Big Apple. Under the hood was a powerful 289 Ford Cobra engine from a 1966 Mustang GT.

KNIGHT RIDER For the Knight Rider show, which originally aired on US television in the ‘80s, KITT –Knight Industries Two Thousand – was a modified 1982 Pontiac Trans Am originally designed for the show by Michael Scheffe. KITT could turbo-boost its way out of dangerous situations, jump over obstacles, drive autonomously and, of course, carry on a conversation. KITT was powered by a 5-litre V8 engine mounted behind its famous red scanner.

HERBIE Herbie the Love Bug is an anthropomorphic 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, a character that is featured in several Disney motion pictures starting with the 1968 feature film The Love Bug. He has a mind of his own and is capable of driving himself, and is also a serious contender in auto racing competitions. Throughout most of the franchise, Herbie is distinguished by red, white and blue racing stripes from front to back bumper, a racing-style number "53" on the front luggage compartment lid, doors, and engine lid, and a yellow-on-black '63 California license plate with the lettering "OFP 857".

BULLIT Bullitt - the 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 from the 1968 film Bullitt. Driven by Steve McQueen, the pony races round the sunny streets of San Francisco, pursuing a 1968 four-speed Dodge Charger 440 Magnum. With little more than engine sound effects to heighten the drama, the famous chase scene still electrifies first-time viewers.

THE BAT MOBILE The Batmobile built for the television show of the 1960s was originally a 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura and built at an estimated cost of $250,000, and was powered by a 5.7-litre Chevrolet V8 engine with 400 horsepower under its carbon fibre and fibreglass body. Even with rear wheels measuring a comical 37in, the Tumbler could move from zero to 60mph in five seconds, according to its builders. March 2016 APPROACH

Smart watches and more………. Casio – Withings Go - Sony - Pebble Steel and MetaWatch

HEALTH AND FITNESS - TECH TO GET YOU IN TIP-TOP SHAPE

Casio - While Samsung and Huawei have been busy glamming up their smartwatches, Casio has gone down the rugged route for its first Android Wear watch. The Casio WSD-F10 is crammed with the kind of sensors that’ll delight outdoors enthusiasts and is also waterproof to 50m. You can view all sorts of location and tracking data on its colour LCD, but uniquely you can also switch to a monochrome LCD readout to extend battery life to about a month. Withings Go - A single CR2032 button battery is enough to power the Withings Go for up to eight months, thanks to its super-efficient E-ink screen. It can be wrist-worn or clipped and tracks walking, running and sleep, syncing data with the Withings Health Mate iOS or Android app. It’s also waterproof, sensing when you’ve hit the pool and tracking time and calories during your swim.

SonySmartWatch 3 - Sony could reveal the third iteration of its Galaxy Gear rival at CES. The SmartWatch 3 is likely to feature the same notification and controls as the current version, with the addition of builtin NFC and low-powered Bluetooth 4.0. Pebble - has revealed the Pebble Steel - a metal and Gorilla Glass-clad version of our favourite smartwatch. It’ll set you back US$250 and you can slap it around your wrist from 28 January at getpebble.com. MetaWatch Meta - And if that’s not enough premium smartwatch for you then there’s always the Meta. Designed by an ex-Vertu designer, the iOS and Androidfriendly Meta is crafted from stainless steel, leather bands and other premium materials. Our wallets are already weeping at the as-of-yet undisclosed price tag.

LG - here comes the Lifeband Touch and Heart Rate Monitor earphones Of course LG is working on a fitness band. Samsung is expected to reveal an update to its existing S Band after all, and what would CES be without a good old-fashioned punch-for-punch altercation between the two South Korean tech giants? The LifeBand Touch has a swipeable OLED display which lets you cycle between fitness information like calories burnt and notifications. That’s right, it can connect to your iOS or Android device no iDiscrimination here. Wellograph Wellness watch - While the Wellograph can tell the time and connect to your phone, it doesn’t support notifications so we’ve slotted it into the fitness category. It’s got a built-in heart rate monitor and sensors to track how active you’ve been and it syncs to Android and iOS devices for progress monitoring. Slathered in unscratchable crystal sapphire, it makes all other fitness bands look like Christmas cracker toys.

PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL IN THAILAND

F

ootball is the most popular sport in Thailand. Although the professional football leagues are new to Thai people, football was introduced to Thailand as far back as 1897. Many Thais also watch football on local and paid-cable TV. Many matches, especially those in the English FA Premier League can be watched free on local channels. Thai channels broadcast every match of the 2006 World Cup. Football was introduced into Thailand in 1897. In 1916, King Vajiravudh founded “The Football Association of Thailand under Patronage of His Majesty the King.” After that the association joined the FIFA in 1925 and AFC in 1957. The Thailand national football team joined the Olympic Games first time in Australia in 1956. The first football stadium in Thailand, the Suphachalasai Stadium, was built in 1935. The first football cup” The King’s Cup” was introduced in 1968. Two years later, the Queen’s Cup, a national cup competition, started in 1970. In 2007, Thailand co-hosted the Asian Cup 2007 with three other countries. 58

APPROACH March 2016

This was the second time the event had been held in Thailand, the first being in 1972. A fast rising club has been training at the TRUE ARENA in Hua Hin recently, Nakhonratchasima Mazda Football Club commonly known as Korat and nicknamed The Swat Cat, is a professional football club based in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. They play in the Thai Premier League. Nakhon Ratchasima FC, their official name, ended as Nr. 8 in the 2015 premier league season.

Coming from the 1st division, where they ended winning the series in 2014, an eight place in 2016 in the TPL is very respectable. Under the professional guidance of their Japanese trainer Sugao Kambe, expectations are growing for the 2016 season. With ex Bundesliga player Björn Lindemann and other star players such as Lee Tuck & Sarawut Masuk to train and play for The Swat Cat, the club aims for a place among the top 5.
