PPROACH Magazine has moved to a brand new office on Soi 112 towards the Floating Market opposite the entrance road to the Banyan Golf Club and Black Lotus Resort. A fresh start in 2014 with more interesting articles for our loyal readers and advertisers. After 12 years of Thailand, being a privileged resident of Hua Hin, I still cannot understand why some signs, may they be advertising or else, contain English words which Thai people don’t understand or that not even give an indication of the displayed message and the rest in Thai which neither tourists nor foreign residents understand. The same goes for websites when the menus are in English but the rest in Thai for no one to understand… that is farangs and Thai. With Asean agreements around the corner, how are they going to cope with the set rules? On the other hand there is no western alphabet spelling for any word in Thai. Petschekasem ot Petkasem or Phetkhasem etc. there is no rule. I once spelled Kuhn instead of Khun which almost cost me a former job. Chinese Mandarin has an official spelling….. Switzerland has voted. The Swiss population has opted to check what is coming into their country and limiting the flow of money seekers. It is their sovereign right.

It seems that some countries in Europe that get flooded with social support seekers protested against this “Volksbegehren”. Aren´t the Swiss speaking silently out of our souls? If we are honest, our countries are having to cope with an enormous stream of individuals of which some are taking advantage of our social system and on top of that condemn our believes and culture, harass our Gerard Mosselman (GMoss) Chief Editor - Director kids and residents and are given heaps of money on top of that. Many politicians and senior educators have warned our law makers but they are widely ignored. Hope you all enjoyed Valentine´s day and the several events around town. Special Valentine dinners at our top hotels and boutique resorts. Hua Hin is definitely growing fast. Hopefully our municipality with all their infrastructural plans don´t forget to finish unfinished roads and safer railways crossings. May March bring us some showers as our dry and cold period was exceptionally long this year, following an exceptionally wet season before. Enjoy our March edition and have a great spring time. Yours truly, GMoss

by Thailand’s leading golf course architect Pirapon Namatra of Golf East. Known to many as Khun Ope, has a wealth of golf course design and experience since the opening of Bangsai Country Club, Ayuddhaya an 18 hole course and housing development that was master planned, designed and constructed on family land by Pirapon Namatra in 1996. APPROACH asked golf course architect Pirapon Namatra: Kindly let us know a little bit about yourself, Golf East, past, and current golf projects?

The unique contemporary Thai style designed clubhouse features luxurious changing rooms, exclusive club suite accommodation, Mulligan’s Pub and Terrace Restaurant. All is perfectly complimented by 5-star service. Spectacular sunset views of the Burmese mountains from the clubhouse make it an even more memorable experience for everyone to enjoy. The championship 18-hole golf course at the Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin was designed and constructed

We’re a team of designers and builders that have been building golf courses all over Thailand for more than 20years. All together we’ve built and renovated over 30courses. Most notable builds being the Banyan, Singha Park and the Santiburi courses. Our renovations include Blue Canyon and Alpine. We’re currently finishing up Nikanti a course with a new concept in Nakornpathom.

We’re also building a new nine for Naraihill in Lopburi on land with similarities to the banyan actually, so I’m excited to see how it turns out. We’re finishing up Siam CC Waterside in Pattaya. With IMG as the designer, we’re doing the build. It should open middle of the 2014. Maybe the restaurant is too small inside but we have an extended terrace to compensate for it.

Khun Piraporn, what were your main objectives when you designed Banyan golf course? Disturb as little of the land as possible. So we just concentrated on fitting in the greens, bunkers and tees. The rest we pretty much left as is. And the owner didn’t want us to touch any of the trees so we left them alone too. All but one. The big Banyan tree that was in the middle of the 10th fairway which we moved about 50m to the left.

Stacey Walton the Club´s General Manager was asked for his comments on this anniversary: I had the honour to be the pre-opening General Manger of Banyan Golf Club. From day one, the vision of the shareholders was clear… to be one of the best, 5-star golf operation anywhere and that’s what I set out to achieve with our team, for the club, our future customers and present members.

Why did you select three different grass types when building the course? We had the help of Dr Micah Woods, a turf grass scientist. He suggested and we all agreed that the local Zoysia is the best grass for the existing soil, the water and the condition we want. We planted it on most of the grassed area. We then decided in favour of TifEagle on the greens and

Club House design by Pirapon Namatra

Paspalum on the tees. These grasses give the playing quality we want in those small isolated areas. The setting and design is only par t of the appeal of the Banyan. The maintenance and the service has always been key since the club opened. I try to visit as often as I can and I’ve never been disappointed in either the service or course condition.

Our official grand opening was celebrated on 20th February 2009 with a Thailand vs. Rest of the World golf competition. I am very proud of our team and I was honoured to receive the most prestigious award after just 12 months of opening being recognized as the “Best New Course in Asia Pacific” in 2010 by Asian Golf Monthly. Opening Banyan Golf Club Hua Hin was one of the greatest experiences and achievements in my career.

We asked Khun Smith Obayawat, the Clubhouse architect what inspired him when he designed the Clubhouse. With this beautiful location I intended to make a natural ventilation and comfor table environment consuming less energy. With the Banyan’s Clubhouse winning two consecutive awards for the Best Clubhouse in Asia Pacific, it gave me inspiration to do a better job than before.

It’s been a remarkable 5-year journey as we’ve won 11 awards to date recognizing the club for being one of the best in Thailand and Asia. What is most impor tant to me is the people that I have met at the club, those that I work with, our Director of Operations Stuar t Daly and the sharing of memorable events we have held such as the Hyatt Open, Rotary Club of Hua Hin, Mondo Vino, Pineapple

Hole 15 before

Pairs, Banyan Masters, Ryder Cups, Societies, Power Tee tournaments, Golf and Wine dinners. I’d also like to create more oppor tunities for junior development and encourage children to star t playing the game. I am very proud to be par t of the club’s 5th year anniversary and like to thank

everyone that has suppor ted us along the way and hope for your continual suppor t in the future. Comments of Stuart Daly the Operations director on the 5th Anniversary: It means that I’m 5 years older without realizing it! I’ve been on site for 6 years and it simply flown by. Been a lot of fun! I’ll never forget the first players who teed off once were officially “open for business” We gave them champagne before the first tee shot at 7am. I think the people I’ve met, and friends I’ve made along the way are the best memories. A big issue was finding out 4 days before opening, that many of our team of caddies had never driven golf car ts before. For 4 days, we simply had them drive around the course all day. The guys who mow the greens at 4am are the clubs heroes in my opinion! Great people make great clubs.

The Banyan was all farm land before

If we continue to maintain our levels of conditions & service and year by year grow on that, I am certain that we will achieve this. Many Hua Hin residents, and club members are already part of Banyan history. I’m excited for the next chapter being written Banyan Thailand Hua Hin has formed a new Board of Directors to lead its next strategic plans, this group consists of: Stacey Walton; Director of Golf and Resort Operations, Stuart Daly; Director of Operations, Bruce Hancock; Director of Business and Organizational Development and Richard Jones Director of Finance .

Stuart, How do you see Banyan Golf Club in the future? It a marathon, not a race. Golf Clubs develop history over time, and Banyan’s history is still young. We have a long term vision of ensuring Banyan remains as the preferred golf club in Hua Hin to join, play & enjoy.

MUSIC

Eric Clapton The Legend

ERIC CLAPTON CONCERT IN BANGKOK ON MARCH 2, 2014.

E

ric Patrick Clapton was born on 30 March 1945 in his grandparents’ home at, Ripley, Surrey, England. Eric was raised in a musical household. His

grandmother played piano and his uncle and mother both enjoyed listening to the sounds of the big bands. Pat later told Eric’s official biographer, Ray Coleman, that his father was a gifted musician, playing piano in several dance bands in the Surrey area. By 1958, Rock and Roll had exploded onto the world. For his 13th bir thday, Eric asked for a guitar. Finding the inexpensive German-made Hoyer difficult to play - it had steel strings - he put it aside. In 1961, when he was 16, Eric began studying at the Kingston College of Ar t on a one-year probation. He was expelled at the end of that time for lack of progress as he had not submitted enough work. The reason? Guitar playing and listening to the blues dominated his waking hours.

MUSIC Typical of his introspective nature, Eric looked beneath the surface and explored the roots of rock in American Blues. Eric spent his early days in music busking around Richmond and Kingston, he also began spending time in London and the West End. In early 1963, 17 year-old Eric joined his first band, The Roosters. Following the band’s demise in August 1963, he spent one month in the pop-oriented Casey Jones and The Engineers. In the summer of 1970, Eric formed Derek and the Dominos with Jim Gordon, Carl Radle and Bobby Whitlock from Delaney & Bonnie’s band . The Dominos would go on to record the seminal rock album, Layla and Other Assor ted Love Songs. A concept album, its theme revolved around Clapton’s unrequited love for George Harrison’s wife, Patti. The band would drift apar t following an American tour and a failed attempt at recording a second album. Hit hard by the break up of The Dominos, the commercial failure of the Layla album and his unrequited love, Eric sunk into three years of heroin addiction. Although he rarely emerged from his Surrey Estate, he filled box upon box with tapes of songs. He kicked his drug addiction and re-launched his career in January 1973 with two concer ts at London’s Rainbow Theater organized by

his friend, Pete Townshend (The Who). The concerts represented a turning point in his career. In 1974, he reappeared with a new style and sound with 461 Ocean Boulevard. Eric had become an assured vocalist and composer in addition to a guitar hero. Eric has also contributed to numerous artists’ albums over the decades. The most well known session occurred in September 1968, when he added guitar to George Harrison’s composition, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” It is on the album, The Beatles (best known as “The White Album”). He can also be heard on albums by Aretha Franklin, Steven Stills, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Plastic Ono Band (John Lennon and Yoko Ono), Ringo Starr, Sting, and Roger Waters.

WHERE TO GO! ATV Driving

Paintball

Number 1

Archery

in Outdoor Fun Cha-Am ATV Park is THE place to be for action and adventure!

A

The second track is where the real adventure begins with curving and steep roads. Riding on the uneven terrain will test your skills learned on the previous track. Furthermore third and largest track is designed to simulate cross-country driving and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We from Approach Magazine enjoyed this last track so much. First of all it is very cool to drive the ATV’s and secondly it is so nice to drive trough the beautiful landscape with your friends.

bout 10 years ago Khun Duke, the owner of Cha-am ATV Park, decided to leave the busy Bangkok city life behind to pursue the outdoor life he always dreamt of. He bought 10 rai south of Cha-Am with the purpose of making a fun outdoor activity destination. Within less then 10 years this grew out to Cha-Am ATV Park what it is today, stretching out over 48 rai nonetheless. Before Khun Duke started, he looked at other similar businesses in Thailand for inspiration. He found that many of those activity companies do not offer a high level of professionalism and maintenance on ATV (all-terrain-vehicle) equipment, which is an important part of the whole experience for a visitor. So throughout the years Khun Duke worked hard to supply customer with ATV’s in mint condition, a lobby in western cowboy style and the best paintball and archery equipment.

After the exciting ride with the all-terrain-vehicles the Approach team took up arms and resides to the archery range. After a short introduction it was immediately bulls eye! At least for one of us, the rest needed some more practice. We cannot compete with Robin Hood yet, but the begining was there. Moreover then it was time to exchange our arrows for paintballs. The park uses the latest paintball guns and there is a large shaded “Field of Play” that can accommodate up to 16 players. The shaded field has Kill Zones and bunker complexes that are suitable for all ages and levels from complete novices, to battle-hardened warriors. We belonged to the first category of complete novices, but we had fun like true warriors.

Khun Duke recognized already years ago that Hua Hin is a growing tourist destination and is becoming as popular as Phuket and Pattaya. That is why he saw there will be a real demand for activities like ATV riding, paintball and archery for people that are looking for more action then only sun and beach.

In conclusion, Cha-Am ATV Park is a genuine addition to the array of activities to see and do in Hua Hin.The combination of outdoor activities and challenging yourself like you never done before is what we recommend to everyone young and old.

The park features 3 well taught-out ATV tracks. The first track is for practicing, and learning the correct driving skills needed to properly and safely operate the vehicle. To contrary belief it is different from riding a motorbike, but after a short instruction anybody can do it. APPROACH MAGAZINE

TRAVEL

Burma A New Destination MYANMAR, QUITE UNLIKE ANY LAND YOU KNOW ABOUT.

I

n 1898, Rudyard Kipling wrote that Burma (also known by its official name, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar) was “quite unlike any land you know about”. Little has changed, and Burma’s secluded unspoilt beaches, enchanting fishing villages, ancient temples and colourful cultures lie in wait to be discovered.

This undiscovered landscape is framed by endless green hills that cocoon vast fertile plains and mighty waterways, chief among them the great Irrawaddy River. Sharing borders to the west with India and Bangladesh, to the north with Tibet and China and to the east with Thailand and Laos, Burma has for millennia bridged cultures from across Asia.

Yangon

Best Time to Visit Burma is best visited October to May thus avoiding the monsoon rains that can make the summer months very wet. Northern and upland regions of Burma can be considerably cooler than the coastal and delta regions, including Yangon, where average temperatures are 32°C.

Holiday Highlights This diversity of regional influences, along with a century of imperial colonialism, has shaped the country into a cultured destination that always captures the hearts of adventurous travellers. Natural wonders abound throughout Burma. Evocative Mandalay and Rangoon (Yangon) exude faded colonial charm and the people are welcoming and engaging. Buddhist spirituality - always at the heart of Burmese culture - is evident from the abundance of temples and pagodas, including the quite remarkable Kyaiktiyo Golden Rock Pagoda which bears clear testimony to the nation’s devotion. Burma also offers something unique and authentic, something potentially challenging but always deeply rewarding.

Burma - The Essentials • Refrain from asking political questions in inappropriate situations • Don’t point your feet towards people • Take off shoes and socks and wear long trousers (gentlemen) or long sleeves and a long skirt or trousers (ladies) in temples, monasteries and pagodas • Tipping is widely acceptable in tourist areas and bargaining is a way of life Kyaiktiyo Golden Rock Pagoda

HERITAGE

Udon Thani BRONZE AGE EXCAVATIONS IN BAN CHIANG.

HERITAGE

T

he province of Udon Thani has a population of 1,544,786. The capital with the same name alone has more than 450,000 residents. Udon thani is approximately 560 km from Bangkok. Udon is also a major commercial centre in northern Isaan and the gateway to Laos, Northern Vietnam and Southern China. 47 km east of Udon Thani is Thailand’s premier Bronze Age excavation at Ban Chiang, the world-renowned archaeological site. Ban Chiang is an archeological site located in Nong Han district, Udon Thani Province, Thailand. It has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1992. Discovered in 1966, the Ban Chiang site attracted enormous publicity due to its attractive red painted pottery. Villagers had uncovered some of the pottery in prior years without insight into its age or historical importance. In August 1966 Steve Young an archaeologist, living in one of the villages for studies, one day while walking down a path in Ban Chiang with his assistant, an art teacher in the village school, tripped over a root of a Kapok tree and fell on his face in the dirt path. Under him were the exposed tops of pottery jars of small and medium sizes. Young recognized that the firing techniques used to make the pots were very rudimentary but that the designs applied to the surface of the vessels were unique and wonderful. He took samples of pots to Princess Phanthip Chumbote who had the private museum of Suan Pakkad in Bangkok and to Chin Yu Di of the Thai Government’s Fine Arts Department. APPROACH MAGAZINE

23

During the first formal scientific excavation in 1967, several skeletons, together with bronze grave gifts, were unearthed. Rice fragments have also been found, leading to the belief that the Bronze Age settlers were probably farmers. The site’s oldest graves do not include bronze artifacts and are therefore from a Neolithic culture; the most recent graves date to the Iron Age. The first datings of the artifacts using the thermoluminescence technique resulted in a range from 4420 BCE to 3400 BC, which would have made the site the earliest Bronze Age culture in the world. The earliest grave discovery was about 2100 BC, the latest about 200 AD. Bronze making began circa 2000 BC, as evidenced by crucibles and bronze fragments. Bronze objects include bracelets, rings, anklets, wires and rods, spearheads, axes and adzes, hooks, blades, and little bells. Wat Pho Si Nai is about a kilometer away from the Ban Chiang Museum - it is the only original archaeological site in a cluster that has not been built on by the encroachment of the village, and well worth a visit. The site shows how pots were buried with people during funeral rites. Although there are few attractions in Udon Thani for most travellers, there are a few interesting Buddhist temples. The city became a bustling support centre for the nearby Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base during the Vietnam War and so retains reminders of that time, with bars coffee shops and hotels. Today, Udon Thani has the largest Vietnamese community in all of Thailand. MARCH 2014

owl that has no ear tufts . Among her most prominent identifying features include the heart-shaped face as well as the relatively small , black eyes. It is nocturnal and can be observed on the day only to their resting places and at the hatchery .

Distribution Barn Owl inhabited the temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of Africa, Europe, Southwest Asia and South Asia, Australia, South America and North America. Makes it one of the most widespread species of birds.

The 33 to 35 centimeters long , light-colored , long -winged and long-legged owl , reaches a wingspan of up to 85 centimeters and has fairly short tail feathers. Males and females are very similar, but females are slightly larger than the male and stained slightly darker in general. The weight ranges from about 200 grams with the smallest forms (especially in the Galapagos Islands) up to about 500 grams approximately at the North American Barn Owl. The eponymous, distinctive heart-shaped face veil is very bright,

Habitat The barn owl settled in her huge distribution area all habitats, except closed rainforests, the interior deserts and montane areas. Semiopen landscapes such as savannas, semi-deserts and steppes tree are preferred. Breeding grounds are especially barns and church steeples, rarely tree hollows . The long wings and gliding flight are adaptations to hunting in open terrain. During their rest period on the day they sit in hiding places like barns, ruins, in tree holes or crevices. Together with the comparatively poor food utilization and low fat storage often leads these little pronounced tendency to weather getaways in Central Europe in severe winters on stock slumps, which can lead to extinction of regional resources.

Behavior The Barn Owl hunts at dusk and at night, especially small mammals. In 47 of 52 studies from the entire range of the species small rodents were at least half of all prey. Bats, rats and small rabbits, birds, reptiles, frogs and insects can locally or regionally play an important role.

depending on the subspecies he is white to light gray or light rust. The top of the body is usually golden brown with a fine gray spot drawing. The base can vary from a very pure white to a light brown, also the drawings and spots of the individual species differ very much from each other. The beak is pale yellow, the claws are horncolored, the iris of the eye is dark brown to black. The toes are nearly featherless and dark gray brown.

In case of unfavorable weather conditions as well as during the breeding season they expand their hunting time out on the day. They detect their prey by optical and audible means. The face veil enhances the sound collection for the hearing, and shields other sounds. Because of this ability, it uses virtually all nocturnal and noise causing small mammals in their area as food.

The nestlings have unlike other owls two consecutive shadings: The first shading is white and short. On the sides of the neck is almost completely missing. After about twelve days followed by a denser and longer shading that is tinted yellow on the body top and gray on the under parts. The eyes open from the eighth day. The iris is initially colored blue and in the course of four weeks into a dark brown. The beak is whitish at hatching, but decreases very rapidly to a gray color. The toes are initially pink yellow and have until fledging of young owls a dark gray color. APPROACH MAGAZINE

During hunting it slides often only a few meters above the ground, and their flight is virtually noiseless. Flow noise during flying can be avoided by the comb-like serrated outer web of front swing arm and hand by a dense white fuzz on the tops of all wings. Observations suggest that it complies with regular routes in hunting and particularly flying along in hedges, fences and ditches. If they discover hunting prey during flight, they can fall suddenly from the flight path, and take the prey with their clawed toes. 24

FINANCIAL NEWS

Global Financial News Meanwhile developed economies have been selling gold. Germany dumped almost 166,000 ounces last October and more than 169,000 ounces in 2010. France sold 56.7 metric tons of gold in 2009, worth at today’s price $3.45 billion. This is gold’s spot price over the past 30 days. That low on Dec. 29, 2011, was gold’s lowest point in six months, and represented a drop of more than 19% from its record price above $1,900 an ounce. Everybody was selling gold.

GOOD NEWS FOR GOLD COLLECTORS.

W

Even billionaire hedge fund manager John Paulson dumped one-third of his holdings in SPDR Gold Shares ETF (NYSEArca:GLD) last fall… and he’d been calling for gold at $4,000 back in May 2011, when George Soros sold his gold holdings. And that weight led to investors turning a blind eye to gold in this first month of 2012. But now, big names are swaying bullish for gold this year. Morgan Stanley thinks gold will average $1,845 an ounce in 2012, while Goldman Sachs thinks gold will hit a new record of $1,940 this year.

e are seeing a big turnaround in the gold market. Who’s buying? It is not who you think. We turned our back for two seconds, and

look what happened: Gold, like a five-year-old who’s found the cookie jar, has shot back above $1,700 an ounce. Well above, actually. At yesterday’s open, gold was trading higher than $1,726. So what happened? How did this “stealth” rise in gold happen? Governments have secretly been boosting their gold buying. While we were tracking how quickly the euro is disintegrating, and counting how many times Newt Gingrich’s ex-wives have spoken out against him, governments were buying five times more gold and gold bullion in 2011 than in 2010. They now have more than 30,788.9 metric tons hidden away in vaults, and they’re expected to buy another 190 metric tons in the first half of 2012. 190 metric tons is more than 6.7 million ounces. At yesterday’s opening spot price for gold, that means

John Paulson

governments could spend $11.56 billion on gold in the next six months. That’s $64.2 million a day, every day until the end of June! Know who’s been buying gold? Emerging markets.Turkey added 63 metric tons of gold between October and November 2011. Thailand bought 52.9 metric tons in 2011. South Korea bought 40 metric tons, and Russia bought 65.2 metric tons! Together these countries make up more than half of all the gold buying in 2011. That is a huge statistic…Think about this for a second. If Thailand bound all that gold on the spot market today, it would spend $3.22 billion, or nearly 15% of its entire GDP growth in 2011. Russia’s been a big buyer of gold since the second half of 2006, and China bought 454 metric tons between 2003 and 2009. APPROACH MAGAZINE

And 2013 could see gold prices at $2,175, according to Morgan Stanley. There are plenty of reasons why gold is going to be a major investment again in 2012, and emerging markets are going to play a big part in that. Particularly China. According to Reuters, last October, 85 metric tons of gold was shipped to China, a massive increase in the biggest importing country in the world. Estimates for last November are coming in at a record-busting 100 metric tons. One analyst is projecting China’s total gold imports for 2011 at 490 metric tons — more than all the gold the world’s central banks added for the entire year last year! COOL STUFF

Wannahaves of Searzall

March

The Searzall won’t just help regulate the fire that you use to crust-cook the surface of a sous-vide rib steak -- it will remove the fuel-like flavor that usually results when inexperienced cooks blowtorch the heck out of food. It does this by putting the flame through two layers of fine alloy mesh that filters it so only the infrared radiant heat, which is what you want to cook your dishes, blows out. Aside from that, the cone-shaped attachment also confines the heat within its insulation, making blowtorches a lot more comfortable to use, with the outer wire safety cage keeping you from accidentally touching the cone while it’s hot.

Safeplug

Made by Pogoplug, it’s a box that connects to your router and automatically uses the Tor network for all internet requests that happen in your home network. Tor (short for The Onion Router) is a networking protocol that anonymizes any data relayed across it by bouncing everyone’s traffic around other users’ connections. It’s not 100% secure (nothing is), but it’s about as close to airtight anonymity as you can get online.

Lumio Lamp Designed by Max Gunawan, it boasts a minimalist styling that allows the entire thing to fold into a book-like bundle, making it easy to transport for portable lighting needs. Unfold the book and it opens into an accordionshaped fixture that you can stretch into a 360-degree lighting solution. During use at home, you can plug it to a USB port for continuous operation. For on the go function, it comes with a built-in rechargeable battery that can power the LEDs for up to 8 hours on a full charge.

Three Man Chess

The big change with Three Man Chess is the board, which is now sized to accommodate three sets of pieces, along with enough empty space to maneuver them in. Instead of a square board, they use a circular one, complete with a zero center space that presents room for new strategies and accompanying challenges that can baffle even highly-skilled chess players. The zero center space is also particularly notable because it alters the moves for each piece somehow, adding another level of complication to the game.

THAI LEGAL TIPS

Purchasing Real Estate

I

f our life is around sport, we may be an athlete, but no matter how talented we are, if you are not fit and don’t know the rules, you cannot be a champion. Likewise, you may be great and diligent at your job and you may have a lot of savings, but all of that may vanish before your very eyes if you don’t know the real estate, Thai and Society laws. Therefore we would like to give you some advice to consider in support of your decision, regarding real estate purchase.

Photos by www.huahinpropertyagent.com

Land Category: In Thailand, there are varieties of real estate land with different types of title documents that contain different legal effects; some categories of land are not for sale by law. Therefore, the following explains the differences. Contract Category: Foreigners cannot purchase and possess land according to the Thai Law. How can you insure your status of ownership if you are buying and assure that you can live in it? Contracts may differ considerably. Contracts: The wording in a contract with regard to rights and duties may not be clear or defined properly. The person who may understand the wording will be the legal officer only.

As a result, buying and selling the property may be prosecuted for revocation afterwards. According to the Civil and Commercial Code, Section 237 enacting that it is valid for the creditor to prosecute and revoke the juristic act done by the debtor that it causes disadvantage against the debtor. Although, the law protects the honest buyer who does not know the said fact, he/she will be protected but there is no buyer desiring to employ the lawyer to defend the case in the Court after buying and selling the property. Accordingly, verifying the seller’s status is the matter which should not be neglected in order to prevent the prospective problems. The Seller’s Status: Who is to clarify the contents of the contract to the buyer? In general, it may be the direct duty of the broker. However, the benefit of their own commission may be lost but we have to accept that the seller’s status is the important matter to be considered; for example, verifying whether the seller is the bankrupt or not, because according to the Bankruptcy Act, A.D. 1940, Section 24, enacting when the Court orders the comptrollership of the debtor’s property, the debtor is prohibited to do any action on his/ her property or business unless this will be done as per the order or approval of the Court, comptroller, trustee or the creditor’s meeting as enacted in this Act. Therefore, if the seller is the person who is during the process ordered by the Court for bankruptcy, the transfer shall be revoked afterwards. Surely, an unpleasant matter for the buyer is to verify whether the seller has any debt or not and the property to be bought is during the process of case prosecution in the Court or not.

APPROACH MAGAZINE

The Status of Property Relation between the Husband and Wife: If the buyer has a spouse, how will it effect the status according to Thai law when buying the property before marriage or buying the property after marriage. How will we be able to make a contract of exemption not to have these laws enforced him/her? It is a serious matter to be considered. The Transfer of Property or Grant of Property in Succession to the Heir: It is sure that no one has an immortal life. Therefore, what to do to have your property transferred in succession to your heir or beloved person? Then, it is up to the wordings in the contract in each category whether such action can be executed or not. The menu at Prime Steakhouse consists of a variety of international carefully selected dishes created by Swedish Master Chef Anders, also responsible for culinary at the Black Mountain Golf Club Cuisine which he directed from the very beginning. Among favourite starters , we chose some Garlic Ciabatta bread with fresh butter along with a fresh aperitif white wine. A traditional Italian Bruchetta or Buffalo Mozarella Toast is among the other choices. Being Scandinavian origin, a Toast Skagen, Shrimp in Mayonnaise with Dill, Onions and lemon on toast, accompanied by a shot of aged Linien Aqvavit is also a perfect starter and mind opener. A Lobster Soup with a touch of Cognac Cream and Cheese Twist as a second starter was a perfect beginning. No need to mention the Pastas…until we tried the Pasta Beef Tenderloin. A Fusilli Tricolore ( three colours), Chili and Sundried Tomatoes and Beef Tenderloin. A perfect combination. As we are at Prime Steakhouse, we went for the Steaks. With a Wagyu Striploin or Rib Eye (Kobe) and a marble score of 4 we were very tempted but went for the 259 gr. New Zealand Tenderloin, whereas my partner went for the New Zealand Lamb Rack.

Wheat,

Friend or Foe? THE NR. 1 WORST FOOD THAT CAUSES FASTER AGING!

by Mike Geary - Certified Nutrition Specialist & Catherine Ebeling - RN, BSN

D

So let’s dig right in and I’ll show you how your rate of aging can be directly related to the foods you might eat every day, and how to protect yourself...

o you eat these foods that HARM your blood sugar and age your joints and skin faster? Some are even deceptively marketed to you as “healthy” by giant

food corporations. Avoid or minimize these and look 5-10 years YOUNGER than your real age.

The #1 WORST food that ages you faster: Wheat based foods (yes, even “whole wheat”)

Due to biochemical reactions in your body that occur with every type of food you eat on a daily basis, some foods age you FASTER than your real age, while other foods help to FIGHT aging. Eat the wrong foods regularly, and you can look and feel 10 or more years OLDER than your real age (not fun!) ... but eat the right foods, and over time, you can start to look 5-10 years YOUNGER than your real age.

Before I tell you why wheat can actually speed up the aging process in your body, let’s clarify some simple biochemistry in your body... This deals with “glycation” in your body, and substances called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These nasty little compounds called AGEs speed up the aging process in your body including damage over time to your organs, your joints, and of course, wrinkled skin.

Three of the processes that go on inside your body that have a MAJOR impact on your rate of aging are called “glycation”, “inflammation”, and “oxidation”. When we talk about aging, we’re not just talking about wrinkles on your skin or how thick your hair is... we’re also talking about factors that you can’t see, such as how well your organs function, and whether your joints are degrading.

So with that said, what is one of the biggest factors that increase production of AGEs inside your body? This may surprise you, but high blood sugar levels over time dramatically increase ageaccelerating AGEs in your body. This is why type 2 diabetics many times appear that they have not aged well and look older than their real age. But this age-increasing effect is not just limited to diabetics.

Yes, I’m sure you’ll agree this is much more important than just how you look superficially (although we’ll show you how to improve BOTH below!) With the title of this article, you might have guessed that obvious answers like sugar or trans fat would be what we talk about in this article. Yes, we all already know those are bad, but I want to discuss another food that ages your body faster than normal... and it’s one that you might not expect!

APPROACH MAGAZINE

So, let’s get back to how “whole wheat” relates to this... Here is a little-known fact that’s often covered up by the massive marketing campaigns by giant food companies that want you to believe that “whole wheat” is healthy for you... but the fact is that wheat contains a very unusual type of carbohydrate (not found in other foods) called Amylopectin-A, which has been found in some tests to spike your blood sugar HIGHER than even pure table sugar.

40

FEBRUARY 2014

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Losing bodyfat is typically another fun side effect of eliminating or reducing wheat in your diet!

You’ve probably also heard about the potential health-damaging effects of gluten (another problematic compound found in wheat that can cause inflammation in your digestive system) in the news recently, but this blood sugar aspect we just covered is not talked about that often, and is yet another reason to reduce or eliminate wheat-based foods in your diet. Your body will thank you by aging slower and looking YOUNGER!

In fact, amylopectin-A (from wheat) raises your blood sugar MORE than almost any other carbohydrate source on earth based on blood sugar response testing that’s documented in studies. This means that wheat-based foods such as breads, bagels, cereals, muffins, and other baked goods often cause MUCH higher blood sugar levels than most other carbohydrate sources. If you don’t believe me, here’s something you should know... I ran personal blood sugar tests on myself using a blood glucometer about 45 minutes after eating 2 slices of wheat bread vs eating a bowl of oatmeal, with equivalent grams of carbs.

And losing bodyfat is typically another fun side effect of eliminating or reducing wheat in your diet! Yet another problem with wheat-based foods and aging...

The blood sugar test results: As it turns out, baked wheat products contain carcinogenic chemicals called acrylamides that form in the browned portion of breads, cereals, muffins, etc. These carcinogenic acrylamides have been linked in studies to possible increased risk of cancer and accelerated aging. Note that acrylamides are also found in high levels in other browned carbohydrate sources such as french fries or any other browned starchy foods.

- 2 slices of whole wheat toast: - 45 minutes after consumption: Blood sugar spiked from 86 fasting level to 155. - 1 Bowl of Oatmeal (equivalent grams of carbs to 2 slices wheat toast) - 45 minutes after consumption: Blood sugar raised from 86 fasting level to 112 As you know now, the higher your average blood sugar levels are over time, the more AGEs are formed inside your body, which makes you age FASTER. Clearly, the whole wheat spiked blood sugar MUCH higher than the oatmeal, and if you don’t know, 155 is a massive blood sugar reading that will certainly contribute to faster aging if you eat wheat frequently.

Most of this is done unconsciously even though we think we are conscious, when all we are is programmed, being a soul in a body, having a human experience. There are seven billion of us and each one of us is a unique story. As one T-shirt vender in Bangkok said: “ This is an original copy – same – same! We are all original copies Same – Same, but different! The difference is that our souls are unique.

ur internal beliefs run us constantly. They are programmed into our imagination from our learning at a very early age from our first experience of our

external reality. We learn to manifest it. It is hammered into our hard drive, as we walk talk and smile. Repetition of our natural cellular inbuilt memory, stimulus response, we don’t have a choice, we are programmed to act in a certain way and be in a certain way, Even if we are very similar, yet how different.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

You must feel like you have what you desire and visualize about every day...

Illustration by Rafael Araujo 2014 You must feel like you have what you desire and visualize about every day, and you must expect it to happen every day for it to happen. How long will it take?

Sit in a quiet place, make yourself comfortable, relaxed, where you will not be disturbed, turn off your phone. You can lay down but there can be a tendency to fall into a light sleep mode, especially if you are new to this. Sit Upright legs and arms uncrossed, close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths, letting go of any limiting emotions or problems in the busy world.

Well, it depends on how big the goal is. If you just simply want to find a specific feather it may only take a few days, if you want to get a girlfriend (not a soul mate) it may take a week or two. If you want to get a new house, or get promoted or a large goal it may take a few months. There is no rulebook that says how long it will take but bigger goals will take a bit longer than very small ones.

After your feeling 100% positive and relaxed close your eyes and visualize a mental movie of what you desire. For many people it’s hard to visualize at first so use this tip. Let’s say you desired going to the beach.

You can’t attract a goal you consider impossible unless you work yourself to believe it’s possible!

Start off with the feel, feel the warmness of the beach and feel the light breeze swaying away. Then go to hearing, hear the seagulls, the kids laughing, the people talking, the waves. Then go to seeing. See all the people enjoying the beach and see people tanning, swimming, laughing, making sandcastles, see the sun and the blue sky and the waves, and people surfing.

Now visualize yourself, with all these senses, walking to the beach, taking your stuff and doing what ever you would do at the beach for as long as you like, although visualizing for less than 5 minutes rarely has much impact.

Dallan lives in Hua Hin now and will be available for above therapies. Contact Dallan through : dallandforbes@gmail.com Mobile & Skype: 09 4485 4431

Creative Visualization is useless if only done every few days or so. It must be done at least once a day. While it won’t harm it much if every few weeks or so you skip a day for a good reason, you must visualize your goal nightly until it happens. APPROACH MAGAZINE

WGC- ACCENTURE MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP Rory McIlroy to do some blue sky thinking in Arizona! Rory McIlroy will hope the weather is not the only thing that is completely different in this week’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. McIlroy was the world number one when he followed a missed cut in Abu Dhabi — his first event with his expensive new Nike equipment — with a firstround defeat to Shane Lowry, in a match delayed 24 hours by heavy snow at Dove Mountain last year. It marked the start of a largely miserable 2013 for McIlroy, who struggled on the course and found himself involved in

So you would like to start playing Golf!

Golf can seem terribly complicated to the uninitiated. So many rules, so many different kinds of clubs. And then there’s the lingo: birdies, bogeys, bump-and-runs. At Golf Digest, this may be the language we speak every day, but we also know it’s a language that can scare prospective golfers off before they ever pick up a club.

The whole point of this guide is to make sure that last part is no longer a problem.

That’s where this online beginner’s guide comes in. To those who know nothing about golf, our goal is to shepherd you through this uncertainty. What kind of clubs do you need? How do you practice? When do you know that you’re ready for the golf course? The way we see it, the only dumb questions about getting started in golf are the ones you’re afraid to ask, or worse, the ones for which you can’t find an answer.

Part 1: What you need to know about clubs. Part 2: Learning how to play Part 3: Basic shots you should know Part 4: When you’re ready for the golf course Part 5: Etiquette Part 6: Those pesky rules Part 7: Getting in golf shape Part 8: What to wear Part 9: Getting ready for an outing

Rugby keeps Hua Hin Awake

In league, if the team in possession fails to score before a set of six tackles, it surrenders possession. Union has no six-tackle rule; a team can keep the ball for an unlimited number of tackles before scoring as long as it maintains possession and does not commit an offence.

WHY RUGBY IS SO POPULAR.

R

Rugby Codes

ugby football is a style of football that refers to two current sports, rugby league and rugby union. Before the split into the league and union codes, the term applied to the style of football believed to have developed at England’s Rugby school to differentiate it from other styles of football. Although these two distinctive forms of rugby share the same general rules and the same objective, namely, getting the ball over the line to score a try, the specific rules for the two forms are different.

Set pieces of the union code include the “scrum”, in which packs of opposing players push against each other for possession, and the “line-out”, in which parallel lines of players from each team, arranged perpendicular to the touch-line, attempt to catch the ball thrown from touch. A rule has been added to line-outs which allows the jumper to be pulled down once a players’ feet are on the ground. In the league code, the scrum still exists, but with greatly reduced importance as it involves fewer players and is rarely contested. Set pieces are generally started from the play-the-ball situation. Many of the rugby league positions have similar names and requirements to rugby union positions, but there are no flankers in rugby league

Rugby football developed from a version of football played at Rugby School and was one of several versions of football played at English public schools during the 19th century In Hua Hin, UK residents will cancel a gala dinner to watch their favourite teams play. On a rugby night, along Soi 112, The Squealing Pig, Bobby´s and Sinatra are filled with rugby aficionados lifting a pint or five as they stick to the TV screens. Of course this includes all of Soi 80 and Soi Bintabaht. If here and there an unknown to us language is spoken, you bet your life on it that it is Welsh or maybe highland Scottish.

Rugby Union

Rugby League

In 1871, English clubs met to form the Rugby Football Union (RFU). In 1892, after charges of professionalism were laid against some clubs for compensating players for missing work, the Northern Rugby Football Union, usually called the Northern Union (NU), was formed. The existing rugby union authorities responded by issuing sanctions against The 2013 Rugby League World Cup took place in England, Wales, France and Ireland. between 26 October and 30 November 2013. It was the main event out of the year’s Festival of World Cups. Fourteen teams contested the tournament: Australia, England, New Zealand, Samoa, Wales, Fiji, France, Papua New Guinea, Ireland, Scotland, Tonga, Cook Islands, Italy and the United States, the last two for the first time.

the clubs, players and officials involved in the new organization. After the schism, the separate clubs were named “rugby league” and “rugby union”.

League Versus Union Distinctive features common to both rugby codes include the oval ball and the ban on throwing the ball forward, so that players can gain ground only by running with the ball or by kicking it. As the sport of rugby league moved further away from its union counterpart, rule changes were implemented with the aim of making a faster-paced and more try-orientated game.

New Zealand were the defending champions, having defeated Australia in 2008. Australia won the tournament, beating New Zealand 34-2 in the final to lift the Rugby League World Cup for the tenth time. In 2012 the All Blacks won Team, Player and Coach of the year and in 2011 the team won Team and Coach of the year after winning the Rugby World Cup .

The main differences between the two games, besides league having teams of 13 players and union of 15, involve the tackle and its aftermath: Union players contest possession following the tackle: depending on the situation, either a ruck or a maul can occur. League players may not contest possession after making a tackle: play is continued with a play-the-ball. APPROACH MAGAZINE

Developers launched more than 23,000 condominium units onto the market in 2013 to release pent-up supplies, according to the Colliers International Thailand. The launches were mainly in the low to medium end market, with reduced unit sizes, compensating to some degree for increasing land prices throughout the city.

espite the Bangkok unrests, Thai house prices are rising at a faster pace than expected. Development of Soi 112 and parallel Soi to it caused land prices to

increase importantly The Thai price index for single detached houses rose by 4.63% (1.48% inflation-adjusted) during the year to end-Q1 2013, the highest year-on-year increase since Q2 2009, based on figures released by the Bank of Thailand (BOT), the country’s central bank.

There were concerns, however, about the BOT’s timing, given the weak economy in October. Baht appreciation may occur as interest differentials with the US widen, while higher costs will hit borrowers when banks follow the rates increase. However so far, the Government Housing Bank (GHB) interest rate has been constant since May 2009, at 6.75%.

The condominium index which soared by 9.39% (6.1% inflationadjusted) is actually a more relevant index. Condominiums are what Bangkok people tend to live in (and foreign buyers). The longer-established detached houses index may over-represent the rural population.

The BOT explained that a negative real interest rate is inappropriate when the economy is expanding. With the key rate at 2% and inflation around 3.4%, the real interest rate is -1.4%, suggesting that further interest rate rises may occur.

Likewise, the price of other property types and land also increased during the year 2013: • The residential land price index increased by 4.85% (1.69% inflation-adjusted) • Property demand is rising fast. Total transactions by value, including both land and buildings, skyrocketed during the year to Q1- Q4 2013 by 35.3%, to THB219 billion (US$7 billion). 64% of all these transactions took place in the Central region. APPROACH MAGAZINE

In fact, a bubble is unlikely in the Thai property market as prices have risen naturally in the past three years, according to the Government Housing Bank (GHB), a state-owned lending agency. GHB’s president Khan Prachuabmoh insists that there is nothing unusual in the present situation, despite the substantial recent increases in low-end supply.

W

hen I purchased Other Worlds for myself (as a fan of fantasy and the author Shannon Hale whose story “Bouncing the Grinning Goat” features in Other Worlds) I did not realise it was an anthology by Guys Read. Guys Read, as it turns out, is an organisation that collects stories in anthologies and lists of books on their website (www.guysread.com) for guys to read. However, despite Other Worlds being specifically aimed at young male adults, I still enjoyed 8 out of 10 stories and felt that 9 were well written. The editor of the collection, Jon Scieszka, introduces the book and then each story is accompanied by a funky illustration by Greg Ruth. The collection officially begins with a Percy Jackson story by bestselling author Rick Riordan. This is followed by Shannon Hale’s story which pleasantly surprises with her usual fantastical mix of village life and a striking heroin. Up next is an action-packed science-fiction, “The Scout” by D. J. MacHale and will forever change the way you think about Boy Scouts. Tom Angleberger’s subsequent story is somewhat silly and turns out to be appropriate comic relief before the next heavy science-fiction tale by Neal Shusterman. Shusterman’s writing and plot is superb and this is one mysterious outer-space story that readers won’t forget.

[Guys Read]

Edited with an Introduction by JON SCIESZKA, Stories Written by RICK RIORDAN, SHANNON HALE, D. J. MacHALE, TOM ANGLEBERGER, NEAL SHUSTERMAN, REBECCA STEAD, SHAUN TAN, KENNETH OPPEL, ERIC NYLUND, RAY BRADBURY, illustrated by GREG RUTH, Harper Collins Children’s Books, 2013, paperback, ISBN: 978-0-00-753502-6, RRP: 332 Baht, 331 pages.

Other Worlds also features a mystery by Rebecca Stead (the author who has received numerous honours for her children’s novel, When You Reach Me) and a story told through pictures by famous illustrator, Shaun Tan. Kenneth Oppel provides readers with an interesting fantasy story titled “The Klack Bros. Museum” and Eric Nylund’s humorous story “The Warlords of Recess” involve alien invasions and two primary school boys. The collection is completed with the longer, deep, dark and compelling “Frost and Fire” by Ray Bradbury. Overall Other Worlds is a book that achieves what it set out to do and is enjoyable for female speculative fiction readers too. The journey through worlds, in outer-space, fantastical locations, or even on Earth, is adventurous and riveting. I would recommend this book as a gift for young teenage boys.

F

ilms that are recent and original are rare, however The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one of them. Perhaps this is because it is inspired by an [older] short story by James Thurber, or perhaps Ben Stiller simply used his talents to their best as both director and lead male actor of this film, maybe it’s both. Either way, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one I would recommend to any adults (and mature teens) looking for a something unique and sweet. In the story, Walter Mitty is a [photo] negative asset manager at Life magazine. Walter is cautious, insecure and does not live an interesting life, except for in his imaginative day-dreams where he leads the secret life of a daring adventurer. When an important negative goes missing, Walter Mitty takes a chance on a real adventure to track it down. The film explores three mediums of realities – real life here and now, the online world, and the world we day-dream about. As I watched Walter’s journey, I viewed the external events and their internal impacts on Walter, slowly changing his perspective and causing him to question the choice reality until his subtle realisation that real life here and now, is all that counts. The mystery aspect of this film is compelling and clever, the adventure aspect is action-packed and humorous. The film is well balanced with comedic elements and a serious tone through its unpredictability. by Zara Adcock APPROACH MAGAZINE

International Curriculum for South East Asia A NEW APPROACH FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ASIA ON THE MOVE.

will bring together schools offering learning for primary and middle years. There will also be discussion on pedagogy supporting the latest research into the teenage brain.

in South East Asia to take a serious look at their learning in her keynote speech at this year’s South East Asia conference taking place at Nexus International School in Putrajaya, Malaysia from 5th to 7th March. “Many schools talk about learning but then spend all their time focusing on teaching,” Sarah Brown will say. “There’s a big difference. One is all about the teacher; the other is all about the students and it is this focus that schools should be aiming for; so that everything that they think and do within the school community is geared to the best possible outcomes for children.”

Schools already learning with the IPC and IMYC from throughout South East Asia will be attending and schools considering a curriculum change are also welcome. Experienced classroom practitioners from the region, including teachers from Nexus International School which has just achieved IPC accreditation at mastering level (the first school in Malaysia to receive this accolade), will be leading some of the practical workshops during the conference.

Attracting many of the region’s international schools, the Summer School conference will provide a stimulating mix of discussion and professional development for teachers and school leaders, all of which will be focused on improving learning. The conference is hosted by the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) and

The first regional IPC/IMYC office in South East Asia, which is located in Kuala Lumpur, has recently been opened to directly support the growing number of member schools in South East Asia. Bruschetta and Garlic Bread Challenge Rate: 3/5

Tip: Use organic ingredients, free-range eggs and sea salt where possible as it is tastier, better for our health and the earth. Each ingredient that I have labelled organic has previously been found in Hua Hin as organic. Biodynamic, unsprayed, and chemical-free, are also good choices.

GARLIC BREAD

Both Bruschetta and Garlic Bread are most delicious with fresh homemade bread, but quality loaves from a local bakery will also do the trick even if the bread isn’t 100% fresh. I have not given many measurements in these recipes as it depends on how much you wish to make. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

If you like, you can make Herb Bread by following this recipe and leaving out the garlic.

• A loaf of fresh bread • Butter, softened • 2-3 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped or crushed • Herbs, ground and fresh of your choice • Sea salt

Method: Mix together the butter with the herbs, garlic and sea salt. Toast the bread on a tray in the oven at 200˚ C. Once lightly toasted, take the bread out, flip it over and butter the slices. Put the tray back in the oven and allow to toast and become lightly crisped. Eat with pasta, lasagne or as an entrée to one of these meals.

BRUSCHETTA Bruschetta is derived from the word ‘bruscare’ meaning to “roast over coals”. Italians traditionally made bruschetta when supplies were meagre and with whatever they had.

Ingredients: • A loaf of fresh bread • Olive oil at hand • Tomatoes, slices halved • Balsamic vinegar • The cut side of a head of garlic • Ground oregano, thyme, rosemary • Sea salt and pepper to season

• Parmesan, grated • Fresh oregano sprigs • Fresh basil leaves • Chilli, finely cut (optional)

Method: Toss tomatoes (sliced and halved) with sea salt, pepper, ground herbs, parmesan, vinegar and olive oil together. You can also mix in chilli or serve it separately. Taste the mixture and season to your liking. Grill the slices of bread until golden brown. This can be done on a grille pan or in the oven at 180˚ C on a tray. Remove toast from the pan/oven and immediately rub with the cut side of a head of garlic so that the warmth of the toasted bread releases the garlic’s aroma. Generously drizzle olive oil onto the toasted bread. Spoon tomato mix onto toasts and serve.

Summoning Hope by Zara Adcock

Margery stuffed the parchment into her satchel and threw all her strength into putting as much distance as possible between her and the incoming Invader-force. Margery led them through the bush and into the Boulder Field under the trees. She hadn’t been there in a while but she knew her way around. The Invader-force had to get off their horses to follow her so Margery used the opportunity to locate an escape route – a slit in the rocks that only someone who was scrawny as Margery could fit through. She ducked into the narrow space and shuffled along until it widened enough for her to resume running. At the end of the path, her eyes registered the erosion that created a cliff. Her arms reached for a wedge in the stone to hold in order to cut off her momentum. The rock wall was far too smooth. Margery fell over the edge down a six metre drop. She stuffed her fists in her mouth to stop from screaming and tucked her head in so it hit the ground last. * A woman crouched over Margery’s unconscious body and assessed the damage. A concussion to the head, broken left leg, body bloody and bruised. Margery had secured the Invader’s very own maps of the Native’s sacred places which meant she had achieved her mission. With a little help, Margery should be able to move on. A cloaked man, whose face was so blank the word faceless came to mind, appeared behind the woman and chuckled softly. The woman spun around and crouched in a defensive position. “He sent you! Even though he saw me get here first, he sent you.” the woman hissed. “Move along Hope, Death doesn’t like to be kept waiting,” “And yet it was from the dead I was summoned and directed.” “Her dead Aunty is meddlesome.” Said Death’s pawn, “Very well, we were both guided here, let’s flip for her,” Hope assented by straightening up and the pawn lifted the chain that Death used to track his employees off his neck and held up the round disc that hung from its chain. “Gold side, I leave. Red side, you leave.” Death’s pawn flicked it in the air and they watched the disc spin gold-red-gold-red-gold. “Have a nice evening.” Said Hope with a salute. He picked up the chain and strung it back over his neck. “She must really need it, if you’re here in that form.” Death’s pawn appraised Hope’s human form and then flickered out of sight. * Margery woke up from the black nothingness that had struck her, panting. She was thirsty, in agony and felt tears rush to her eyes. “I’m at your side Margery, I’ll stick with you.” Said Hope. Margery’s vision came back slowly so it was a moment before her throbbing brain registered the stranger and her odd caramel colouring. Caramel hair, eyes, skin and wrapped in a silver tunic. “Are you an angel?” Margery gasped. “No, but I am flattered that you would think so. I am much more humble than that, I am Hope.” Margery’s brain slowly ticked over to the memory she sought, Aunty’s dying words: Don’t lose hope. Margery knew the Native’s legends, and she knew that Deity-spirits got involved in the human world no matter how much the Invaders said otherwise. “Hope,” said Margery. Her instincts and intuition argued against each other, but intuition won out. “Hope.” This was the essence of mankind’s hope crouched over her like a mother. “How is Aunty?” Margery asked. “Radiant,” said Hope, then added, “And just as quick witted as her human self.” * With Death himself at her side, Aunty watched Hope guide Margery to a sitting position, bandage her wounds, eat, drink and crawl into a more sheltered space. “You saw that Margery was in trouble, you summoned Hope, you managed to manipulate the disc flipped for her body and won. You are clever.” Said Death who despised when he begun to care about the lives of humans rather than just taking them away. “Thank you, but I didn’t do anything to that disc, I just channelled my own hope.” Said Aunty. “If you say so.” Death answered. “What are your plans for the little orphan now?” “I do not make plans for others, though I suspect Margery has her own plans. Now that she has the maps it will take the Invaders much longer to find us, the Natives I mean. The Invaders have been brought down to a fair playing level, we have a chance. Margery will be a big part of that chance.” Death nodded. He wouldn’t tell Aunty over his dead body but he knew, in the way Deity-spirits do, that Aunty’s intuition was sharper than his own.
