EDITORIAL

I

love disclaimers. You write your two pennies worth of intellectual garbage and disclaim the responsibility of doing so. I stand to what I say. Not disclaiming anything. Trying to help friends who were in real medical trouble, it was soon discovered that foreigners pay at least 4 to 5 times the hospital medical fees of locals at private hospitals. Asking why, the answer was: ”hospital policy”. My friend was looking into paying more than 50.000 THB a day for an incubator to save his baby´s life which had developed pneumonia after birth. In the country where I come from, patients are treated equal regardless of heritage. Went up in the big yellow balloon to watch the beach horse polo but decided to mix among the bold and the beautiful. Funny game polo, not very exciting but somehow part of the Chicky Micky. Fun watching the ladies all dressed up and the gents wearing their coolest stuff. I never saw so many high-end cameras per head as on that Saturday afternoon on the beach in front of the Intercontinental. Thai team won. With 4 farangs on the team and two Thai jockeys, how do you calculate the win. Do the farangs get 10% of the trophy each and our local heroes get 30% each? Anyone ever ordered food to your home through butler service? It is fun and you get it served in class at reasonable add on prices, but then again noblesse oblige! Finally it has been made possible, get a small device on your restaurant dinner table with pushbuttons that zooms the waiter, drinks or check bill to your table. Remember beem me up Scotty? It is back. Saw it and believed it. Hot these days? The hottest April ever they predicted. As May and June usually deliver showers, July will be hot again. Anyone heard about some Jazz coming to Hua Hin, on the beach? Mephisto denies any participation which rules out any international top performers. Hey guys, if you want to put Hua Hin on an international Jazz map, you have to do it with the top guys, consult the top organizers. No do, is downgrading stuff! Furthermore APPROACH is now readable on planes going to Malaysia and soon on other international lines. Your editor has requested a stewardess review but it was politely denied, I wonder why? Had dinner the other day at Madame Aree on Soi 88… wonderfull Ratatatatouille with gratin potatoes and home-made meatballs, all together with a great glass of red wine at a very reasonable price. Love the place. Another great place for Isan , Lao and western Food is Zab Wer on your way to the floating market. Gotta go there Fritz. Patravadi is opening an elementary primary school next to her first project on Petschkasem rd. It will be a bi-lingual programme but the tutoring is with an alternative streak challenging kid´s talents and phantasy. Anyway I have a feeling APPROACH is on the right track and we will be alert to inform as much as possible about events in and out of Hua Hin. Stay with us! Yours Truly, GMoss. Here is one for the road:

A blonde approaches a car dealership after a sever hail storm with the roof of the car badly dented. When she asked for help, the service manager, trying to be funny, answers: “ lady, blow into the exhaust pipe as hard as you can and they may come out. She blew and blew nothing happened. Her friend approached and saw her kneeling behind the car . After she explained what the service manager had told her , her blonde friend looks at the car and said: “ you forgot to close the windows”.

THE INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL, TRANSPORT & HOTELIERS CLUB

kal is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism, friendship and fellowship. Skal International has approximately 25.000 members worldwide in 450 clubs and 80 nations. Skål International is the largest travel and tourism organization in the world. The exclusive membership is made up of top executives in the tourism industry. Its monthly informal lunch or dinner meetings will offer the members a venue for networking and discussion. Most meetings feature a presentation by a notable guest speaker. Shortly after the inauguration of the first joint Swedish and French air service between Stockholm and Paris in 1932, a group of travel people from the French capital were invited to make an exploratory flight over the new route. The welcome they received in Stockholm led to many pleasant friendships. Realizing the importance of closer relationships among those who strive to develop and promote both national and international travel, the men who made the flight to Stockholm determined to found a permanent organization whose primary aim would be the creation of goodwill and friendship in travel and transportation circles throughout the world. Thailand has several Skal clubs, located in Bangkok , Hua Hin , Pattaya, Phuket, Samui and Chiang Mai.

The president of Skal International Thailand, Andrew Wood quotes: “I believe that there are good times ahead for Thailand’s tourism. In fact, we could be heading for a bumper year. I am confident we can bounce back from recent man-made and natural disasters. The signs are looking good, with encouraging numbers of business and leisure travellers opting for destinations in Thailand. Hotel rates in Thailand remain remarkably competitive but hoteliers will be looking to maintain higher levels of occupancy throughout the year”. “The challenge in 2013is to retain members and to attract more representatives from the travel and tourism fraternity to join our organisation. Young Skal in Thailand offers tourism and hospitality students to meet with young professionals and we are fortunate to enjoy the support of top universities such as ABAC. Our members work at the heart of the nation’s tourism industry. Together we continue to support Thailand’s efforts to restore faith and confidence in the leisure and MICE sectors”. Among others, Skal Hua Hin will be participating in supporting charity to alliviate the hardship of certain under privileged children and families and give support where it is needed. Skal will be appealing to residents and organisations in particular for support of these charity endeavours. Visit Skal on facebook: Skal International www.skal.org www.skalthailand.org

Thailand Coronation Day Coronation Day or Wan Chattra Mongkol is a public holiday in Thailand to commemorate the anniver sar y of the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej as Rama IX, the ninth king of Chakri dynasty. People in Thailand celebrate Coronation Day on 5 May ever y year. The fir st Coronation Day was celebrated on 6 April 1851 when King Mongkut was crowned as King Rama IV. Prior to that time, there was no special Coronation Day celebration since the coronation of the King was held by only high ranking officials. Noticing the impor tance of Coronation Day in the other countries, King Rama IV issued a royal announcement to hold a formal ceremony for his Coronation Day. To make it easier to under stand, the day was named “Ceremony to Commemorate the Royal Regalia”. This tradition continues, and the date when King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s was crowned Rama IX of Thailand is obser ved as the current Coronation Day.

The Royal Ploughing Ceremony Day

Fr iday, 24th Visakha Bucha Day

VISAKHA BUCHA means the worship of the Buddha on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month. It usually falls in May. In the case of a year with an extra eighth lunar month--Adhikamasa (there are 13 full moons in that year)-- the Visakha Bucha Day falls on the full moon day of the seventh lunar month. Visakha Bucha Day is one of the most important days in Buddhism because of three important incidents in the life of The Buddha, i.e. the birth, the enlightenment and the passing away, miraculously fall on the same month and date, the Vesak full moon day. So each year, Buddhists throughout the world gather together to perform the worship to recollect the wisdom, purity and compassion of the Buddha.

12

This day is actually a two ceremonies in one. The first, the Phra Ratchaphiti Pheutcha Mongkhon is a Buddhist ceremony to bless the plants. The second, the Charot Phra Nangkhan Kan is a brahmin ceremony to bless the plants. The ceremonies are performed annually to bring good fortune to all plants as well as boost morale. The Royal Ploughing Ceremony is believed to have started by the Brahmans during the ancient period. Its history dating back before the birth of Buddha. The Royal Ploughing Ceremony of Thailand is normally called “Pharaj Pithi Jarod Phranangkal Raek Na Kwan” by Thai people.

“ELVIS” IN HUA HIN

itchie Newton better known as “Elvis” is a performer with a great voice singing Elvis songs dressed up like Elvis, moving like Elvis. Ritchie performed at the Multi Culti evening at the Hilton on Sunday.

Short Biography Born in1964 as the first of 5 siblings in Straubing, Bavaria , Germany, Ritchie discovered his love for music shortly after at the age of 5 and joined a German marching band as a drummer. In 1975 Ritchie saw his first Elvis movie ‘King Creole’, and his mother, who was a big fan of Elvis, saw the magic sparkle in the eyes of the 10 year old. From that moment onwards there was no turning back, and the singer Ritchie Newton was born. His mother bought him his first record, his hair changed overnight to copy the King and evenings were spent practicing the ‘pelvis’ in front of the bathroom mirror. Not long after, his first public performance followed in the local schoolyard and there was no doubt that this kid had talent.

In November ‘99 Ritchie met Thailand’s most famous Elvis impersonator, Jaruk Viriyakit, who invited him to join one of his shows which was later broadcast on TV. It was a triumph not to be beaten and from that moment onwards Ritchie has been playing at least 6 nights a week in various hotels, bars and pubs. Invitations to Hong Kong and other parts of Asia followed shortly after and only the real ‘King of Rock’n Roll’ Elvis Presley knew what would come next ! Welcome to Hua Hin Ritchie, we hope to see you here more often ! Editor´s note : I pretend being the “know it all” of Elvis Presley but after talking with Ritchie, he is the ultimate Elvis guru!

CONCERT PIANIST

Aree Kunapongkul

A

Then on August 16th 1977 the sudden death of Elvis Presley shocked the planet and for Ritchie the world collapsed. While the nights were filled with crying and sorrow, during the day every spare minute was spent listening to the Kings records... With the help of German Elvis impersonator Marc Charro, Ritchie began practicing day and night to perfect his performance. Marc’s feedback and criticism was invaluable and it was the beginning of a wonderful friendship. Then in January 1999 he was ready for the stage and the first concerts were promising. In February he played in front of 2000 fans of the Spider Murphy Gang and that was the long awaited and surely deserved break through .

ree is extremely talented and a sweet personality. The few times she performed in Hua Hin at the Hyatt Regency, she played together with Mathias Bogner Master of Violin.

Beach Polo in Hua Hin ON APRIL 20, 2013, THE INTERCONTINENTAL RESORT & SPA IN HUA HIN HOSTED THE ANNUAL HORSE POLO BEACH COMPETITION. POLO TEAMS FROM MACAU, HONG KONG, INDIA AND THAILAND COMPETED AGAINST EACH OTHER ON A FENCED OUT BEACH AREA.

eather conditions were perfect although quite hot for April. The event brought glamour, fashion and excitement our resort town of Hua Hin. In usual fashion, the Intercontinental, known for it´s glamour events, just naming a few : Thailand Filmfestival & the Tennis exhibition at the turn of the year hosted this competition in a classy style. The Intercontinental set up VIP tents with wine and dine programmes making the event a true derby. The “Asian Beach Polo Championship InterContinental _ B.Grimm 2013”, which took place on Saturday at 4.30pm at the beachfront of InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, is the fourth tournament where international polo players will compete for a trophy from HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha. The sand is not the easiest place for horses to manoeuvre and it takes skilled riders to handle the swift turns and swing the sticks without hurting these gentle creatures. However spectators were well served with some dynamic display of rider´s skills and game.

Polo is unquestionably the oldest ball game on earth, some 2500 years ago polo was first played in ancient Persia. The centuries evolved, and the stick and ball rolled into play through Imperial China and onto the steppes of Mongolia and the Khans. In these times, polo was essentially warfare training with dozens of “players” to a side. In the 1800’s, polo expanded greatly in India, as English officers took up the game, founded clubs, and formulated a set of rules. The Calcutta Polo Club is the oldest club in operation today, established in 1862. From there the passion overtook England, spreading through Europe, Australia, and to the USA. In 1875, Argentina discovered its polo destiny, and developed unabated to bring them to current undisputed polo preeminence. Khun Srisuphang Morris with husband and friends

Harald Link with the Thai Team were the winners of the Championship

Today, Thai Polo & Equestrian Club relishes the honor of continuing the excitement, and the proud traditions of this amazing obsession in Thailand. Polo is enjoying resurgence in Thailand, with patrons like Harald Link encouraging increased interest in the sport among Thais and expatriates by sponsoring international tournaments and playing facilities. The Thai Polo & Equestrian Club, for instance, showcases tournaments like the Mercedes-Benz & B.Grimm Polo Cup, to highlight the exciting, social side of polo, combining high quality match play with interesting activities for spectators and families. During 2008 and 2009, Thai Polo & Equestrian Club plans a number of international tournaments, domestic practice games as well as offering a training program for juniors and other riders to hone their skills at polo. The Thai Polo Team represents our club in tournaments both in Thailand and abroad. As we would like to make Thailand better known as an active participant in the international equestrian sport activities, we find it important to use this name wherever we go. In the last two years we have taken part in quite a number of tournaments. Over the past years Thailand has enjoyed a strong growth in equestrian activities, primarily in Bangkok and the beach resort of Pattaya, 150 kms to the East on the Gulf of Thailand and sixty to ninety minutes drive from the Bangkok International Airport. The number of riders is growing steadily and, the quality of riding has improved tremendously. This was witnessed during the recent South-East-Asian Games held in Thailand during December 2007. It was not until the late 1990’s that Mr. Link and his friends, particularly Mrs. Nunthinee Tanner caught the polo bug and decided to establish their own club in nearby Pattaya. The beautiful countryside surrounding Pattaya encouraged their love for the sport. Thai Polo & Equestrian Club opened in 2005, set in over 200 hectares the club has two international-standard, full-sized fields, a practice ground, stabling for over 120 horses, paddocks and approximately 80 horses for the use of members. The staff includes an Argentinian manager, veterinarian and farrier, together with a number of Thai assistants.

MODERN

Tribute to Margaret Thatcher AMONG THE MANY WOMEN THAT HAVE HEADED OUR DEMOCRACIES, ONE WAS DEFINITELY HIGHLY RESPECTED AMONG HEADS OF STATE EAST AND WEST, MAY IT

A

BE DEMOCRACIES OR TOTALITARIAN GOVERNMENTS –MARGARET THATCHER.

Margaret Thatcher was Britain’s first female prime minister and served three consecutive terms in office. She was one of the dominant political figures of 20th century Britain, and “Thatcherism” continues to have a huge influence. Margaret Hilda Roberts was born on 13 October 1925 in Grantham, Lincolnshire, and was the daughter of a grocer. She went to Oxford University and then became a research chemist, retraining to become a barrister in 1954. In 1951, she married Denis Thatcher, a wealthy businessman, with whom she had two children.

Thatcher became a Conservative member of parliament for Finchley in North London in 1959, serving as its MP until 1992. Her first parliamentary post was junior minister for pensions in Harold Macmillan’s government. From 1964 to 1970, when Labour were in power, she served in a number of positions in Edward Heath’s shadow cabinet. Heath became prime minister in 1970 and Thatcher was appointed secretary for education.

18

After the Conservatives were defeated in 1974, Thatcher challenged Heath for the leadership of the party and, to the surprise of many, won. In the 1979 general election, the Conservatives came to power and Thatcher became prime minister. She was an advocate of privatising state-owned industries and utilities, reforming trade unions, lowering taxes and reducing social expenditure across the board. Thatcher’s policies succeeded in reducing inflation, but unemployment dramatically increased during her years in power. Victory in the Falklands War in 1982 and a divided opposition helped Thatcher win a landslide victory in the 1983 general election. In 1984, she narrowly escaped death when the IRA planted a bomb at the Conservative party conference in Brighton. In foreign affairs, Thatcher cultivated a close political and personal relationship with US president Ronald Reagan, based on a common mistrust of communism, combined with free-market economic ideology. Thatcher was nicknamed the ‘Iron Lady’ by the Soviets. She warmly welcomed the rise of reformist Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. In the 1987 general election, Thatcher won an unprecedented third term in office. But controversial policies, including the poll tax and her opposition to any closer integration with Europe, produced divisions within the Conservative Party which led to a leadership challenge. In November 1990, she agreed to resign and was succeeded as party leader and prime minister by John Major. In 2002, after a series of minor strokes, Baroness Thatcher retired from public speaking. She died of a stroke on April 8, 2013, at the age of 87. A great political woman who will be remembered by us all for her determination – courage and charisma. Espresso Veloce V12 Machine This hand-built Espresso machine comes in both V10 and V12 configurations, with each of the tailpipes serving as a separate dispenser. Just like a real automotive engine, it›s crafted from materials like aluminum, magnesium and titanium, with plenty of touches that give it realistic detail. They’re only half scale, though, so don’t worry about the coffee machine taking up the entirety of your counter space.

Cigar Holder with Flask The 2-in-1 Cigar Holder and Flask measures 7 x 3.25 x 0.5 inches and it is made from stainless steel. Granted, the cigar container shrinks the amount of liquor you can carry (just 4 ounces), but two and three-quarter shots should be enough to calm the nerves but that will also ensure you don’t get plastered before the big meeting which is definitely a good thing.

Hankerchief Pocketbook The Hankie Pocketbook has a triangle-shaped top end so it looks like a folded handkerchief while sticking out of the pocket. Inside, you get 60 ruled pages of acidfree paper where you can write down your thoughts on life and love, along with your grocery list and to-do tasks for the day. They come with subtle dot patterns just like some handkerchief designs for even more believability. Only comes in three colors, though -white, red and blue.

On the Rocks Designed by Jeff Henderson, it’s a big lump of stone that’s been handcrafted to serve as a tap system for bottled beverages. Kind of like the kegs we imagine they used in the Bedrock joint Fred Flinstone frequented during happy hour. Outfitted with tubes and a spigot, simply put a bottle of your favorite spirits or a growler of craft beer on the top hole, then draw it out from the tap.

Google Chromebook The centerpiee of the Google Chromebook Pixel is the 12.85-inch display: 3:2 aspect ratio, 2,560 x 1,700 resolution, and 400 nits of brightness. It’s also a multitouch screen, allowing you to tap and swipe your way around the browser OS if using the glass trackpad isn’t your thing. Details include a dual-core 1.8GHz Core i5, 4GB of RAM, two storage options (32GB or 64GB -- both SSDs), an HD webcam, stereo speakers, three mics, WiFi, Buetooth, optional LTE, a 59Wh battery (rated at 5 hours of usage) and a gaggle of ports (USB, mini-displayport, audio inputs). In case the storage is a bit light for your needs, Google is throwing in a three free years of 1TB cloud storage with Google Drive, as well as an SD card slot. Surprisingly, there’s no Ethernet port.

Champagne Cork Table Crafted by giants, the home furniture is actually a giant cork with the sturdiness and stability of a proper stool. Oh, this isn’t fake cork either. Instead, the Giant Champagne Cork Stool/Table is made with a harvested bark from a Portuguese Cork Oak Tree. The shape is patterned after the cork from the Grand Vin de Champagne, which, we’re guessing, is what the giants who live in the heavens like to drink on their off days. The furniture piece measures 18.75 inches tall and 12.75 inches in diameter.

FINANCIAL NEWS

G20 Economies G20 ARE A GROUP OF TWENTY FINANCE MINISTERS AND CENTRAL BANK GOVERNORS (ALSO KNOWN AS THE G-20, G20, AND GROUP OF TWENTY) FROM 20 MAJOR ECONOMIES: 19 COUNTRIES PLUS THE EUROPEAN UNION, WHICH IS REPRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL AND BY THE EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK.

T

he group was formally inaugurated in September 1999, and held its first meeting in December 1999. It studies, reviews, and promotes high-level discussion

of policy issues pertaining to the promotion of international financial stability, and seeks to address issues that go beyond the responsibilities of any one organization. Recently, the finance leaders of the G20 economies were set to debate specific targets for reigning in debt levels and the potential dangers from the latest round of aggressive easing of monetary policy from the world’s biggest central banks. They were also poised to demand swifter resolution to setting guidelines for financial benchmarks like the Libor interest rate in the wake of a global rate-rigging scandal. But a rethinking of the austerity push among the world’s biggest economies loomed as the biggest talking point. Advanced economies, particularly in Europe, have undertaken sharp austerity drives in recent years to curb growing debt, but those efforts have at times damaged economies already suffering from capital flight and under-investment from the private sector. EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn told Reuters in an interview on Thursday that a period of reduced spending and borrowing was necessary to calm markets concerned about out-of-control debt levels, particularly in peripheral European countries. That time has passed, he said. In a 2010 study frequently cited by policymakers, Harvard professors Kenneth Rogoff and Carmen Reinhart found that on average, economies contract when the debt-to-GDP ratio surpasses 90 percent - a level G20 officials were set to debate.

22

However, the study’s results were disputed by researchers at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, who said growth for countries with those ratios was actually 2.2 percent. Weakness in economies that undertook the most severe measures to cut deficits undercut the austerity argument. The United Kingdom, in particular, is suffering its third recession in the last five years. As exchange rates float and some third countries keep their currency on an unatural height against the Pound and the Euro, the G20 explain that the exchange rate is not a policy target but it is important for growth and price stability, they add, noting the fundamental issue at the heart of these discussions. They say that the Euro is not overvalued, saying that nominal and real euro exchange rates are around their long-term averages. They decline to comment on the likely wording of the G20 statement. They also weigh in on the austerity vs growth debate, saying: We don’t believe that inflating budgets deficits to create demand is sustainable. In other words printing money is getting us nowhere! Just to recap, the UK economy shrank in the final three months of 2012. If it contracts again in the first three months of this year, that will plunge the UK into its third recession in four years... the dreaded triple-dip. That would leave chancellor George Osborne’s reputation in tatters. And consumer spending is a huge part of the UK economy. However we are all in the same boat ! Courtesy of Reuters

The New King of Holland PRINCE WILLEM ALEXANDER AND PRINCESS MAXIMA CROWNED AS KING AND QUEEN OF THE NETHERLANDS.

Q

ueen since 1980, 74-year-old Beatrix of the Netherlands stepped down to allow her son, Prince Willem-Alexander, to become king. Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima, were crowned King and Queen of the Netherlands on April 30, 2013. Willem-Alexander, 45, is married to Princess Maxima Zorrigueta and has three young children. Queen Beatrix said in a television broadcast to the nation that she was stepping down because she felt her son was ready to take her place on the throne. A constitutional monarchy, the Netherlands had reduced the involvement of the Royal House in politics, a role long seen more as a formality than a position of power.

Queen Beatrix, who remains very popular with the Dutch, became the sixth monarch of the House of Orange in 1980 following the abdication of her mother, Queen Juliana, who reigned for 31 years. Juliana was 73 years old and in deteriorating mental health when she abdicated, but Beatrix has remained active and in good health despite some setbacks. The queen was emotionally shaken when a man drove his car into a Queen’s Day procession in 2009. THE COMING KING Willem-Alexander, 45, will assume his new duties after living the life of a somewhat flashy heir-apparent. And he will be the Netherlands first king in more than a century, when WillemAlexander’s great-great grandfather William III held the throne. William III died in 1890, the same year that Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh shot and killed himself. Since then, queens have ruled the Netherlands. Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand, known as “Alex” to his friends has carefully built up a reputation as an expert in water management and sits on several international committees. His marriage to a commoner, whose father was a civilian minister in Argentina’s military dictatorship from 1976-1983, at first raised eyebrows.

Princess Juliana and Prince Claus

But Maxima Zorrigueta, an attractive blonde with a down-toearth smile, won over the hearts of the Dutch, quickly learning their language. Last year she took a dip in one of Amsterdam’s canals to show people how clean they have become. Water is no trivial matter in the Netherlands, where dikes and sea barriers hold back the North Sea and a complex system of pumps and canals keeps the land dry enough for people to live in and for its farmers to produce tulips and cheese worth billions of euros. Willem-Alexander and Maxima have three daughters. APPROACH Magazine wishes Willem Alexander & Maxima the very best !

IN APRIL 1782, CHAO PRAYA CHAKRI, A GENERAL UNDER TAKSIN WHO PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN RECLAIMING SIAM, WAS CROWNED KING. AS THE FIRST MONARCH OF THE NEW ROYAL CHAKRI DYNASTY HE WAS POSTHUMOUSLY DUBBED KING RAMA I.

R

ama I moved the Capital from Thonburi as it was cut in half by a waterway making its defense difficult and reconstructed a new city on the East bank of the River.

Foreign traders continued to call the capital Bang Makok, which eventually truncated itself to ‘Bangkok’, the name most commonly known to the outside world. The Thais, meanwhile, commonly use a shortened version of the name, Krung Thep (City of Angels) or, when referring to the city and burgeoning metropolitan area surrounding it, Krung Thep Mahanakhon (Metropolis of the City of Angels).

The old forts and city walls were demolished and replaced with widened walls and moats. New ditches and canals were dug for transport and water consumption. The new Grand Palace and the Palace to the Front were constructed. The new city was called Krung Rattanakosin Inayodhaya after the Emerald Buddha (which Rama I, as a General retook for Siam from Vientiane in Laos). Upon completion of the royal district in 1785, at a threeday consecration ceremony attended by tens of thousands of Siamese, the city was given a new name: ‘Krungthep mahanakhon amonratanakosin mahintara ayuthaya mahadilok popnopparat ratchathani burirom udomratchaniwet mahasathan amonpiman avatansathit sakkathattiya witsanukamprasit’. This lexical gymnastic feat translates roughly as: ‘Great City of Angels, the Repository of Divine Gems, the Great Land Unconquerable, the Grand and Prominent Realm, the Royal and Delightful Capital City full of Nine Noble Gems, the Highest Royal Dwelling and Grand Palace, the Divine Shelter and Living Place of Reincarnated Spirits’.

Etymology of Rama The reference ‘’ Rama ‘’ comes from the Hindu traditions in Thailand adapted in the Ayutthaya Kingdom prior to the Chaki Dynasty. Rama in Indian mythology was the King of Ayodhya (Ayutthaya in Thai) and in Hinduism is the 7th Avatar of Vishnu. The deity Rama is popular in South East Asia following the Indianisation of this area 1,500 years ago. During the Kingdom of Ayutthaya some Kings of Ayutthaya referred to themselves as ‘’Ramathibodi‘’ which translates to mean ‘’Rama the great ruler‘’.

After the collapse of the Ayutthaya Kingdom a process of nation building was required. Also during this period there were wars with the Burmese, Khmer (Cambodians) and Annamese (Vietnamese). The national boundary of Siam was expanded. In the North it conquered Lan Na, the Shan states in Burma and Sip Song Panna in China. In the South it conquered Malacca, Pattan, Pera Trangkanu, Kelantan and Saiburi (now parts of Malaysia). This was a period of imperialism. The Social Philosophy of Siam in the 18th & 19th Centuries In the Rattanakosin period society still followed the Ayutthaya concepts of the divine right of Kings and the division of society between the administrators and those who were administered.

Rama IX Bhumibol Adulyadei 1946 until the present

People were either nobles (land owners) or commoners (including slaves). The concepts were based on Khmer Hindu beliefs and supported by the Buddhist system. Slavery was legally prevalent until 1905. The right page map shows the subsequent territory losses up to 1910 to British colonial forces in Malaysia and Myanmar and the French in Vietnam and Cambodia.

ENVIRONMENT

Energy from

Biomass? BACKING AWAY FROM BIG BIOMASS. IN THE UK FORTH ENERGY COMPANY PULLS LEITH BIOMASS APPLICATION.

A

cross Europe, there is growing demand for large scale biomass plants, which are proposed as a renewable alternative to dirty, finite fossil fuels.

In Scotland, Forth Energy, a company formed by Scottish and Southern Energy and Forth Ports Limited, is proposing to build four huge biomass plants at Rosyth, Dundee, Grangemouth, and Leith. What is biomass? Biomass is plant matter used to generate electricity and produce energy from heat. The most conventional way it is used is by incineration. Materials used are wood, forest residues (branches, wood chips, dread tress, branches, tree stumps), and rubbish. There are numerous misconceptions surrounding this supposedly green alternative: Deforestation A report has shown that Scotland will not be able to meet its increasing demand for wood. Yet by subsidising biomass, the Scottish government continues to promote the use of of large-scale biomass for energy. Wood production is less than 0.5m tonnes per year in Scotland, yet the Forth Energy proposals will burn over 5,3m tonnes per year. Air quality Burning biomass releases large amounts of solid carbon combustion particles and gases into the air and there is uncertainty about the impact of these emissions on human health. The UK is currently failing to meet legally binding EU air quality standards in many areas, including in areas in Scotland where biomass plants are proposed.

Threatening plants and animals Forests are the most complex ecosystems on Earth, home to a multitude of species of plants and animals. Due to deforestation across the planet many species are now extinct and others are endangered. With imports from biomass set to skyrocket to between 27-60m tonnes per year in the UK, it is highly likely that this will be an additional cause of deforestation and subsequent pressure on species living in native forests. Inefficient power Forth Energy’s proposals are primarily intended to generate electricity. Biomass for electricity is incredibly inefficient and requires a lot of wood to produce a small amount of energy. It is estimated that the plants will be 30% efficient. This would be in breach of EU legal standards, which require 70% efficiency rates. Although Forth Energy promises to supply thermal energy as well as electrical energy, the proportion of heat proposed is small in relation to the proportion of electricity. An independently commissioned research shows that Scotland can meet 183% of its electricity needs through much greener sources such as wind and tidal energy, not inefficient biomass for electricity.

IMMIGRATION

TIPS

O

Overstay Annoyment? WHAT I S OVER STAY EX ACT LY ? verstay is, not only staying in Thailand without a valid and expired visa, but it is also not showing your face at immigration for a 90 day stamp. Furthermore overstay is

departing on a flight a few days after your tourist visa has expired , including the 1 week extension which you could have bought at the local immigration office.

Do Not Overstay in Thailand! In principle , you can clear an overstay at the Airport when departing, but if you are caught by Immigration before you reach the airport, you could be jailed until you can pay your fine and show a one way ticket back to your home country. If you overstay by one day, there is no charge. After that, it’s 500B per day, so 2 days is a 1,000B fine, 3 days 1,500B etc… The maximum overstay fine in Thailand is 20,000 baht. Foreign children are subject to fines for overstaying in Thailand only when over the age of seven. When going through Immigration, they will notice the overstay and take you to a desk to pay it, taking about 5 minutes in all. Fines can also often by paid in advance at any Immigration bureau. You will not be jailed if report your overstay at the local immigration office before departure or just in general. They will ask you to pay the fine and depending on your status , you can apply for a visa again or take that trip to Laos or Cambodia…make it a tourist trip, getting to know Thai´s neighbours. If you are stopped by the police for whatever reason and are found to have overstayed – no matter for how long, you could be detained in one of the Immigration Detention Center for a few days while your

case is processed. This is an experience you can well do without, as conditions inside have been described by Amnesty International as ‘cruel and degrading’ and ‘seriously overcrowded’. Inhuman. Chances of ending up in such a situation are very remote, however, be well advised to not overstay if at all. If you do overstay for any reason, obviously you should steer well clear of any kind of activities that might attract the attention of the authorities. When a passport has expired and the owner surrenders to the Immigration Office, the owner will be fined 200 baht per day from the date of passport expiration up to the day of surrendering. By surrendering, the owner of the passport will only have to pay a fine up to the maximum of 20,000 baht. Foreigners who are apprehended in up-country areas for overstaying their visas will be sent to the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok. If that occurs during the weekend, such persons will be detained in the Immigration Bureau jail until the next working day even when they are in possession of a confirmed ticket and money for transportation to the airport. Remember, this delay will result in air ticket problems, since you will have to find a way to contact the airline about amending your ticket or being issued with a new one. This is not a fairy tale with a happy ending. It is a warning that you could get trapped in a never-ending circle of problems. Such situations do occur. However, do not be put off from visiting Thailand. If you want to stay in Thailand for a long period, make sure you do it legally. Since that is not so easy to do, you may need the assistance of a qualified lawyer who is familiar with immigration law.

Learn to Swim in Hua Hin by a Professional MATT ADCOCK, A PROFESSIONAL SWIMMER, SURFER AND INTERNATIONALLY QUALIFIED SWIM TRAINER IS NOW PROVIDING SWIMMING LESSONS IN HUA HIN.

M

att is a fully qualified, internationally accredited swim teacher now providing swimming lessons in Hua Hin. He has swum competitively as well as for personal enjoyment in pools and oceans all his life. This month I was able to speak with Matt and find out about his beliefs and his goals for teaching swimming in Hua Hin… What inspired you to teach swimming in Hua Hin? I have always enjoyed swimming and I am grateful that I learnt as a toddler. When I first moved here with my wife and 2 children, we stayed in a condo and every week I noticed someone attempting to swim some laps and struggling due to a lack of technique. In Australia, there are more Swim Schools than 7/11 stores, and most people will begin learning to swim at 6 months of age. How have the people of Hua Hin responded to this so far? Well I am only just getting started really, but so far response has been very positive. I have students of all ages from babies to adults, participating in private swimming lessons and others wanting to join group classes. Where do you currently teach? I am currently conducting lessons from Hua Hin Maneesiam Resort. Maneesiam Resort’s pool is good because it has a decent length and depth and students are able to focus well in the quiet environment. There is a restaurant and shaded seating area as well for parents and guardians to enjoy during the lesson. Why do you believe swimming is such a valuable skill for life? The ability to swim well can enable you to confidently enjoy many other aquatic activities. I probably wouldn’t have become an experienced surfer if I hadn’t been a strong swimmer first. How long does it normally take for a child to learn to swim? It takes years to develop an efficient swimming stroke. View it as long term process. My belief is that it is best for children to attend swimming lessons year round for proper development of their aquatic skills. Swimming has been proven to be beneficial to the physical and mental development of a child, and if they are able to learn at their own pace, practicing skills appropriate to their level, they will do well.

37

Once a child has learnt to swim well, can they still benefit from swim lessons? Of course, from the age of about 8 and up, we can offer squad training and coaching for good swimmers that are interested in either becoming more competitive, or simply want to reap the physical benefits gained by regular swimming training. In fact, I look forward to starting a swimming club here in Hua Hin as soon as I have enough people interested. How would you teach someone with a fear of water? Everyone can be taught using the same progressive teaching methods, regardless of their age or confidence level. The only difference is those with a fear of the water need more time and more reassurance, and they need to know that they can trust you. Fear of water is acquired as children grow older, the longer a child is kept away from the water the more likely they are to develop aquaphobia. I like to start teaching children from as young as 12 months of age, but parents can begin introducing their baby to water from a much younger age. If a student can already swim, but has had no formal training, is it still worth them learning with Swim Hua Hin? Absolutely, students are unlikely to be able to swim far without becoming exhausted, unless they have acquired the correct techniques. Swimming when done correctly is a fantastic form of exercise that works the whole body and improves cardiovascular fitness. Are you able to teach students how to move in moving water such as the ocean? For safety reasons, all swimming lessons are taught in pools. However, once a student can swim, I could certainly help them with some ocean swimming and I can even offer swim survival and rescue training.

KIDS &

EDUC ATION

Raising an Only Child THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RAISING AN ONLY CHILD.

I

n Modern times big families are out of fashion. In many families both parents work and kids cost a lot of money regardless of child social support (non-existent for foreigners, where we

are), government schools etc. Some of us are blessed with twins which than makes it a larger family. Some of us are a bit more senior as we married anew in Thailand and our wives have given us this Benjamin who brightens up our Autumn days. However, whether it’s by chance or by choice, you are bringing up just one. Here are some highlights of things some of us wished someone had told us about having an only child. Some friends, family members and even strangers will judge you. Although the number of only children has grown in recent decades and single-child families are the fastest growing family unit, they’re still non-standard. Some people will waste no opportunity to remind you of that while there’s still time to remedy the situation. To them, your mini-family is freakishly, selfishly small. Or maybe they’re just jealous. Regardless, you will be hearing about it. You will be scheduling a lot of play dates. Families with multiple children have play dates built in. And while doing things on your own is a good skill for kids to learn, you will want to be extra-sure your child knows how to be sociable with his peers. That means play groups or storytelling at the library when they’re little; scouting and team sports as they get older. That said, there will be many days that no one will be available for your kid to play with. As a result………………….. You’ll find more ways to ‘entertain’ your child than a cruise director. Until your child is old enough to get lost in Harry Potter (thank you, J.K. Rowling!), you will have to engage and play Barbies or Transformers.

38

For the times when that is just boring you to tears, opt for a board game or a creative activity like Play-Doh or painting. And, like every other parent out there, sometimes the TV will be your best friend. You will feel guilty about not giving your child a sibling. Although some ‘onlies’ revel in their singular status, at some point most will feel deprived, imagining the super-cool older sister or cute little brother they don’t have. And they will let you know it. When your daughter tells you that every wish she has made over her birthday candles was for a brother or sister, you will feel the knife in your heart. As time goes on, you’ll worry about leaving her alone to shoulder the possible stresses of caring for you in your old age. You will get more quality time with your kid. Parents of bigger families are just spread thinner. Do the math: the bigger the family, the less time each child gets. You’ll make the time you spend with your child count, whether you’re pushing her swing or watching over her homework. With just one kid, these moments add up. You’ll focus on the here and now - because you’ll have more time to do it. You don’t get a do-over. You’ve seen it: Mums are just more relaxed with their second and subsequent kids. They know what to expect and don’t over-react to every blip on the radar - from the dropped binky to the baby eczema. If you stop at one, you don’t reap the benefit of that learning curve. Take solace in knowing you still get the chance to offer your hard-won expertise to friends and family members who are facing parenting for the first

EDUC ATION

& KIDS It will be harder to set boundaries. ‘Okay, we can go get a manicure together.’ ‘I guess you’re old enough to see that movie.’ Since your only child spends so much time with two adults, you may fall into the trap of treating her like a mini-grownup. But just because she seems so much more rational than her peers with siblings, try to be clear about age-appropriate boundaries. Limits are important for kids and knowing that you’re in charge helps your child feel secure.

You and your husband may jockey for parenting time. While you’ll likely do more things as a family (with both parents bringing your kid to the birthday party), it’s normal to feel a little left out when your child and partner have one-on-one time. And as long as having all that adoration doesn’t make your beloved prince or princess feel like she has too much power (which isn’t healthy), there’s nothing wrong with kids knowing how much they’re loved.

You will have to work hard on sharing. Your son can spend as much time with the Thomas train/pirate ship/Game Boy as he wants since no one else is waiting for a turn. But while that means you won’t have to listen to shouts of ‘That’s mine!’ every ten minutes, you’ll end up working hard to give your kid opportunities to practice sharing. Of course, sometimes onlies ( an only child ) can be natural sharers since they value connecting with a friend and aren’t as accustomed to having to stake claim to their toys.

Having just one costs less - but it’s easy to blow it. You will you be tempted to pay for more toys, fun activities and the newest designer sneaker or iPhone (Why not? We only have one You will have trouble saying no. It’s easy to give in to a plea to stay up late or a request for a treat each time you go to the store when no one else is asking. And while parents with more than one kid often think about the precedent they may be setting for other siblings or the bickering that will result if one gets preferential treatment, you won’t. But it’s important for parents of singletons to be consistent as much as possible: In the outside world, your child will need to follow rules just like everyone else.

You will have energy left over for the rest of your life. Whether you work outside the home or not, as your child ages, you will find yourself with more time than other parents to spend on personal interests. You can actually read the books from your book club! You can catch coffee with a friend while your child is at baseball practice since you don’t have other kids to attend to or cart to their own extracurricular. In other words, it will be easier to have a life in balance, which is also an excellent lesson for your child.

Your kid will be fine. There just is no basis for the persistent myth that only children are somehow maladjusted. Only kids have as many pals as those with siblings and their personalities span the same diverse range.Your child will have plenty of opportunities to negotiate relationships at school, with neighbours and through social activities. Think of it this way:Your child is no more likely to turn out socially awkward because he is an only child than others kids .

A P P R O A C H MA G A ZI N E M AY 2 0 1 3

Last but not Least - It will go by …….really fast. In general, the journey of raising kids is famously quick (or at least it seems so after the fact). For parents of onlies, it’s over in a flash. The feel of your baby’s soft chubby legs, her first gurgly laugh, his first wobbly steps - by the time your kid hits sixth form or university, those precious memories can seem like a distant dream. So try to remember to savior the sweetness and the strife. It really will be over before you know it!

The Sword of Star s Day 1 The First Day of the Summer Holidays

I

t had been approximately 4 hours since his mother had run through the rain to get to work. Since then, Simon had eaten, flipped through his

favourite novel and watched his neighbours pull out of their driveways and head off to the coast, a place Simon had never been. The rain was pelting down on the tin roof harder than ever and Simon leaned on the window sill in his bedroom. He stared for so long that his eyes became unfocused and he just closed them both. “Are we here?” said a voice. Startled, Simon opened his eyes and looked for the sound. A man in a strange green coat answered. “Of course we are. Now let’s get out of this rain.” About 20 men followed him onto the veranda, each wearing the most bizarre costumes. There were hats with feathers and belts with sheaths. It looked as if they were meant to be in a theatre. Simon heard a knock on the door and slid off the bed so that he could not be seen from the window. The man in the green coat knocked again. “Requesting to see Mrs. Violet Chester and Master Simon Chester,” he called out. How did they know their names? The only bit they had gotten wrong was the Mrs. Violet Chester was not married. “We are here to escort you to the Captain,”

Simon heard someone twist the door handle as if to see if it were unlocked. “Chuff, get over here!” called the man in the green coat. The front door began creaking and the whole house shook as Chuff seemed to be trying to crash down the door. Simon heard the wood crack and peel from the door frame and then a thundering crash let him know that they had succeeded in breaking in. Simon gasped and scooted behind his bedroom door. “Is anybody home?” someone yelled out. “Of course not,” Said the man in the green coat. “When someone knocks, the person inside is meant to answer the door. Based on this theory, they are obviously not home,” Then why did you break down the door? Simon thought. “Then why did we break down the door?” Someone asked. “To look for clues as to where they went, we’ve got to bring back something for the Captain.” Simon heard them tear apart the living room in search of clues and couldn’t help thinking, if they wanted to know where Simon and his Mum were, then they ought to look at what belongings were missing. “I’ll look in here.” Someone grunted. Heavy footsteps came down the hall carrying with it a very tall and partially overweight body. Simon pressed his back to the wall and peered at the man through the crack.

The man had to bend down to get inside the room and when he did, he had to crouch to walk around. Simon guessed this was, Chuff, the same person who broke down the front door. Chuff picked up Simon’s belongings and discarded them on the floor. He pulled the cupboard doors open so hard that one door actually came off. He then bent down to look under the bed. Simon seized the moment Chuff ’s buttocks were in the air to creep out of the room. If he could just go across the hall to the bathroom, he could escape out that window, run all the way to where his Mum worked and get her to call the police. Simon crept as quickly as he could. “Aha,” The man in the green coat scooped him up by his collar just as Simon could have disappeared. “So you are home! Everyone!” called the man in the green coat. “Stop your search, I have found what we came for!” Who you came for, Simon wanted to correct him. The man in the green coat turned to Chuff who was bending down again to get out of Simon’s room. Then the man in the green coat tossed Simon into Chuff ’s large arms. Simon scrunched up his nose. Chuff reeked of fish guts and held Simon tightly. “Master Simon Chester,” The man in the green coat bowed low, and then held his hat to his chest. “I am Sir Blithe, First Mate to the Captain of the Ship of Silver Stars, we are here to take you and your mother there the second you can tell us where she is?” “I don’t know where she is, Sir Blithe,” Simon lied. “Will she be home soon?” Simon glanced at the clock on the wall and back at Sir Blithe. She would be back in two hours, but Simon did not want to put her in danger. “Um, I don’t know Sir,” said Simon.

Sir Blithe raised an eyebrow. “Very well Master Chester. Skinny Legs, Parry, Hilden and Kip can stay here. Parry, you’re in charge, don’t go until you have her. The rest of us, back to the ship,” “Er Sir Blithe, maybe I should call my mother to see when she’ll be back?” Simon asked. Maybe all would be alright if he could just make a phone call. “Couldn’t I do it?” said Sir Blithe. “MRS. CHESTER!” he yelled. “No Sir, with the telephone,” Simon pointed to the telephone hung on the kitchen wall. Sir Blithe narrowed his eyes and looked very much like he did not trust it. “No, no, let’s just go.” The party moved out the front. “You cannot take me, this is kidnapping! You will all be arrested!” Simon cried. “Kidnapping? Do we look like kidnappers to you? Go on Chuff, show him who we are.” Chuff walked into a large puddle in the middle of the front yard and tightened his grip on Simon. “Hold your breath.” He grunted. Simon barely had time to work out what Chuff had said when a creeping sensation crawled up his spine. He felt himself being sucked down into a whirlpool, spinning deeper and deeper. He went to scream but his mouth filled with water. He was going to drown. And then suddenly it stopped and he was dry. The ground rocked a little but it held him. The colours around him were so bright he felt blinded whilst his eyes adjusted. “Ah, Simon, at last, we meet.” To Be Continued…

I ROASTED SEA BASS

am Anthony Munn an Australian national, but originally from New Zealand. I have a strong classical culinary background with 33 years of experience. I began my career in 1980 at the Hermitage Hotel Mt Cook in the Southern Alps, prior to moving to Australia. After moving to Australia, I worked with many resorts and stand-alone restaurants all over Australia and the Pacific including hotels in the Starwood chain. In June 2007, I joined the Hyatt Regency Perth as chef de cuisine to date. I am very happy to be in Hua Hin, a wonderful privilege to experience Thai culture. Hua Hin is famous for fresh seafood and Thailand is known as a paradise of fresh tropical vegetables and fruits. This is beneficial to all chefs as we can easily find quality products and ingredients that enable us to create mouth-watering delicacies to delight our guests.

WITH CHORIZO, LOCAL CLAM FRICASSEE AND WARM CAPERBERRY DRESSING Ingredients: Roasted Sea Bass 160gm fillet of sea bass skin on sea salt olive oil 1/2 lemon 25gm unsalted butter Ingredients : Clam Fricasse

Ingredients : Caperberry Dressing

50ml olive oil 80gm waxy potato cut small dice 80gm organic vegetables cut into small dice: pumpkin, pimento, courgette, turnip 40gm green peas 50gm cured chorizo cut into small dice 1 pinch sweet smoked paprika 100ml quality chicken stock 8 each local clams washed and cleaned

75ml olive oil 25ml red wine vinegar 30gm fine diced red shallot 10gm tarragon finely chopped 20gm finely chopped chives Salt Milled pepper

1) First make the dressing. Heat 1 tbsp of the olive oil in a small saucepan. Add the capers and the onion and cook for 3 mins until softened. Splash in the red wine vinegar and reduce, then remove the pan from the heat. Add the rest of the oil and the tarragon, then leave to infuse. 2) For the fricassée, heat the oil in a sauté pan, add the chorizo and fry for 2 mins until it starts to crisp and render out red oil. Throw the potatoes and paprika in the pan and cook for 5 mins, tossing occasionally, until they start to brown on the edges. 3) Pour in the chicken stock, turn up the heat and boil the stock for 8-10 mins until it has nearly all evaporated and the potatoes are tender. Add the clams stir the peas and cook for 2 mins more until heated through, then set aside. 4) Using a sharp knife, score the skin of the trout fillet at close intervals, then season generously with sea salt and black pepper. 5) Heat the butter in a non-stick frying pan. When it starts to sizzle, carefully lay the fish in the pan, skin-side down. Gently fry for about 8 mins until the skin is crisp and golden and most of the flesh has changed colour with just the top still raw. 6) Carefully turn the fish fillets over then squeeze over the juice from one half of the lemon. Cook for 1 min more, basting fish with the lemon pan juices. Turn off the heat and leave the fish in the pan. 7) Spoon a pile of the fricassée into the centre of each plate. Place another spoonful of the mixture on top to create a small heap. Gently sit the fish fillet on top, skin-side up. Spoon the caper dressing around the outside of the plate, garnish and serve.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Chinese Alternative Medicine AN ALTERNATIVE TO

CHEMICAL TREATMENT

KNOWN AS SCHOOL MEDICINE?

T

raditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses for more than 2,000 years.TCM is based on a belief

in yin and yang, defined as opposing energies, such as earth and heaven, winter and summer, and happiness and sadness. When yin and yang are in balance, you feel relaxed and energized. Out of balance, however, yin and yang negatively affect your health. Practitioners also believe that there is a life force or energy, known as qi (pronounced “chee”), in every body. For yin and yang to be balanced and for the body to be healthy, qi must be balanced and flowing freely. When there is too little or too much qi in one of the body’s energy pathways, called meridians, or when the flow of qi is blocked, it causes illness. The ultimate goal of TCM treatment is to balance the yin and yang in our lives by promoting the natural flow of qi. In an interesting analogy, often used to explain its nature, qi is described as the wind in a sail -- we do not see the wind directly, but we are aware of its presence as it fills the sail. History of Traditional Chinese Medicine The first writings about TCM date back to 200 BCE. Herbal medicine and acupuncture, including theory, practice, diagnosis, and treatment, were recorded in classical Chinese texts and refined over many centuries. The practice of TCM stayed in Asia for centuries. Chinese immigrants had been practicing TCM in the United States since the mid-19th century, but its existence was unknown to most Americans before 1971. That year, New York Times reporter James Reston, who was in China covering former President Nixon’s trip, had to have an emergency appendix operation. After the operation he received acupuncture for pain, and his stories about this experience with TCM fascinated the public. Since then,TCM has gone on to become a mainstream alternative medicine practiced all over the world. How does TCM work? Disease -- alterations in the normal flow of qi such that yin and yang are imbalanced -- is thought to have three major causes: external or environmental factors, your internal emotions, and lifestyle factors such as diet. Through the use of its therapeutic modalities, TCM stimulates the body’s own healing mechanisms.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

TCM practices include: • Acupuncture and Acupressure • Moxibustion, burning a herb near the skin • Herbal medicine • Nutrition • Chinese massage, called Tui Na • Exercise, such as Tai Chi and Qi Gong which combine movement with meditation In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the body’s internal organs are thought of not only as individual structures but also as complex networks. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi flows through organ systems -- kidney, heart, spleen, liver, lung, gallbladder, small intestine, and large intestine -- by way of meridians. Despite their specific names, these 5 systems correspond to more than individual body parts. The kidney, for example, represents the entire urinary system along with the adrenal glands, located on top of the kidneys. The heart, meanwhile, represents both the heart and the brain. What should I expect on a visit to a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner ? The Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner will ask you questions about your medical history and do a physical exam to look for signs of imbalance. The TCM practitioner will examine your skin, tongue, and hair, as well as other parts of your body, from the brightness of your eyes to the color of your nails, and check six pulses on each of your wrists. The practitioner will also listen to your voice to assess your shen (spirit), and will work to determine if one or more of your organ networks are affected. The practitioner will then try to correct any imbalances in your body by providing a combination of the therapies discussed above. What is Traditional Chinese Medicine good for? Over the centuries, TCM has been used to treat countless conditions. Western scientists are still studying its effectiveness for various diseases. For serious conditions, make sure you are working with a conventional doctor along with a TCM practitioner. Always let everyone on your health care team know about any medicines, herbs, or supplements you’re taking. Some of the conditions for which TCM is known to be helpful include:

Obesity - Diabetes and its complications, such as retinopathy (damage to the retina located in the back of the eye) - High cholesterol – Depression – Arthritis - Back pain - Male and female fertility disorders - Alzheimer’s disease - Parkinson’s disease – Allergies – Asthma - Cancer, especially colorectal cancer -Sleep problems – Stress and many other disorders and diseases. Is there anything I should watch out for? You should not take Chinese herbs without supervision, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Chinese herbal products are often poorly labeled, and important information may be missing. Some Chinese herbal products contain drugs not listed on their labels. For example, some Chinese herbal creams that are used to treat eczema contain steroid medications. Also, be on the alert for Chinese herbal medicines containing aristolochic acid. This acid, derived from an herb, has been linked to cases of kidney failure, and even cancer. Also, some Chinese herbs have been reported to contain heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. A trained and certified TCM practitioner can identify herbs that are safe to take. The practitioner should also explain the potential side effects of the herbs they prescribe. Always tell your doctor about any herbs or supplements you are taking. Where can I find a qualified Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner in Hua Hin? At the San Paolo Hospital. Dr.Wanee can diagnose and recommend herbal medicine to patients. There is a farmacy in Hua Hin on the corner of Tomsin and Petschkasem Road who has all the herbs prescribed by Dr. Wanee. Dr. Wanee is also an Acupuncture practitioner. Further more there is a Swiss lady who is a phytotherapist, naturopath who can be consulted on alternative. Phytotherapy is the study of the use of extracts from natural origin as medicines or health-promoting agents. Traditional phytotherapy is a synonym for herbalism ... Editor´s note : had sessions myself which helped me back on my feet after serious energy failure. The tea I had to drink was bearable after a cup or three. However , when starting an alternative treatment , you will find that you will not feel better immediately as your body has to adapt the change and process it will be going through. Keep on going as it is really a big step away from our pharmachemical manipulation. Pills treat the symptom, not the cause. Chinese medicine treats the cause.

TIPS

REAL ESTATE

Buying Property in Thailand

I

f you are looking for property in Thailand you need expert local assistance. The agent knows how to communicate in Thai and they’re familiar with the geographical area. The agent will save you valuable time in selecting and showing you the property in your price range that meets your needs. I can honestly say that purchasing directly from the developer isn’t going to save you money versus buying it from agent. A quality property for sale in Thailand is generally offered at a fixed price by the Seller. The best benefit of using a property agent is that they will act as a liaison between you and the Seller. They will obtain a fair price for you and act on your behalf to represent your best interests throughout the entire process.

Title Search

Legal Planning

When you feel satisfied with the property, you will be asked to make a deposit to show your good faith to continue the process. In return, the Seller will reserve the property for you and start the process by drafting the contracts for purchase. Unless you write specifically a “get-out” clause in the deposit agreement, for example “subject to clear title” or “subject to agreement on the contract terms,” the money deposited is non-refundable.

A comprehensive examination of title deed recorded at the Land Department should be done. You need to verify that the Seller has clear and legal title of the land before you enter into a contractual agreement. The title search will trace the land to its first possession. This investigation will also verify the right to access to your property; provide the residential zoning, environmental and planning codes in the area and show any registered mortgage or liens on the land. It is a good idea to make sure that you can build a structure on the land.

Place a Deposit

Before you sign any deposit agreement or contract, you should sit down with a lawyer or solicitor to discuss the legal process. You need to know the correct legal process in Thailand for the foreigner to acquire property. Remember that you are spending part of your life savings to acquire this property and you must carefully plan your steps in the process. Siam Legal, a local and well-established company, offers free legal consultation to potential property buyers. You should get the legal facts of the property and contract laws in Thailand before you deposit any money.

Review the Contract Now you are ready to proceed to acquire the property upon verification of a clear title. The Seller will have the contracts prepared for you. Since the Seller will write the contracts, it is highly recommended that you have a lawyer or solicitor review the terms and conditions. First, you want protection for yourself should there be a delay in the property being built. A proper remedy should be stated in the contract. Second, the Seller will state a penalty if you are late with your payment. This should be fair and reasonable to both parties. Finally, your payment schedule should be reasonable and practical. Normally, a first payment can be from 10 to 25 percent. Thereafter payments are made on a progressive basis: 25 percent when the roof is on, 25 percent when the door and windows are secure; and 25 percent when the fixtures and fittings are completed.

Best Method of Ownership In Thailand, a foreigner may only own a condominium in his/her own name. If the foreigner wishes to acquire land and build a house, he/she should obtain a 30-year lease on the land. People should apply for the construction permit to build the house in their own name. This way the foreigner owns the house and has a secured long term lease on the land. The lease is written with the option to reassign to another person (if you sell), ability to sublease and with a purchase option (should the law change in the future to allow freehold ownership by the foreigner). Therefore, a lease is the most common legal method for the foreigner to acquire property in Thailand.
