do need to apologize to the Queens of Jazz as APPROACH inserted wrong pictures and placed Ella Fitzgerald where she should not have been and a picture of Billy Holiday totally missing.

It was D. Jazz alias Mephisto alias Rene that woke me up but the magazine was already at the printer.

To make up, for this, APPROACH is working hand in hand with Mephisto and The Banyan Resort to bring two top international superstar ensembles to town on May 12th. Both Beyond Blues Quartet and Philippe Sellam Trio enjoy world fame and were more or less kidnapped ( they didn´t mind) on their way from Paris to KL where they will perform at the National Malaysian Jazz festival. This one time fantastic concert will attract Jazz lovers from all over Thailand and promises to go down into Thai Jazz history.

Hua Hin is really getting crowded these days, roads on weekends are mainly blocked. It took me 45 minutes from the fly over at Soi 112 to get out of town towards Cha Am. In addition some short cuts along our famous Klong, Hua Hin river, are in a disastrous condition and other projects are being moved forward where it is really not needed whilst roads like Soi 112 have been widened, filled up with gravel and sand, watered daily but no asphalt or concrete in sight. Shops and homes are full of dust and nothing moves forward. No use complaining as there is really no explanation. I recommend to get out of town and enjoy a day at the beach, for example at the Anantasila where you can linger all day long, get served in style on the beach and return home when traffic is bearable.

The women´s club of Hua Hin celebrated their first anniversary at the Anantara Resort with a gala buffet dinner and cabaret show, beautiful ladies….I wonder if they were…danced and performed whilst The Voizez, a top Filipino band fulfilled our romantic and dance endeavours. The women´s club has been collecting for charity, underprivileged kids and supported by the Hua Hin Hospital and generous Gerard Mosselman (GMoss) contributions from our main Hotels and Chief Editor - Director our lord major personally. Local events such as musical events , multi cultural evenings and society lunches are becoming more popular and contribute towards Hua Hin waking up. Fortunately, thanks to the residentiality of our beloved King and Queen, Hua Hin has remained a peaceful jewel on the Gulf coast and we are all proud of it.

Blues & Beyond Quartet

T

he Blues & Beyond Quartet with Dominique DiPiazza was born in 2010, after a concert at the Sunset Jazz Club, in Paris.

The inner idea is simple: bring together four outstanding musicians, from different cultures, generations, styles, and federate on a musical project starting from the Blues, and exploring various kinds of world music. A mixture rich in colors, different shades of Blues & Jazz, in a unity of tone & Swing.

The rythm section proposes an incredible impressive groove, enabling melodies and choruses to develop in a delicate and yet energic dynamic, on beats coming from all over the world.

In 2008, The legendary John McLaughlin called upon Dominique’s talents for a European tour with The 4th Dimension, also including Gary Husband on keys and percussion, and Mark MondÊsir on drums. Together the band played more than 30 concerts all across Europe and released a DVD Live @ Belgrade. Another show featured Dominique with McLaughlin in India, in a group called The Floating Point, which included Ranjit Barot, Louis Banks, Shashank, Naveen Kumar and Shankar Mahadevan.

Philippe Sellam New Trio has created music for many TV and radio credits and advertisements as well as run many workshops and master classes. Philippe recorded more than 70 albums.

Philippe Sellam is a co-leader of NOJAZZ band whose first album was producted by Teo Macero (producer of Miles Davis), the second album featuring Stevie Wonder, Maurice White (Earth, Wind and Fire), Mino Cinelu.

The Philippe Sellam trio consists of: Philippe Sellam variety of Saxophones - Fred Dupont at the Organ and sharing Yoann Schmitt on the drums.

This Jazz event promises to be a historical milestone in the musical history of Hua Hin with a never before star studded ensembles.

Where to Go & What to Do! The Hash House Harriers

Every Saturday afternoon the Hash House Harriers get together for a 1 hour run and walk through the Thai countryside. The Hutsadin Elephant Foundation and Trekking

Hutsadin Elephant Foundation offers the visitor a variety of attractions.

At present we have 3 elephants available for trekking. Each trek can be half an hour or an hour and you will be taken through the surrounding areas. They are on top of the hill going from Hua Hin City to Pala U waterfall on Nognplub rd.

Kaeng Krachan National Park

This Thailand’s most extensive national park occupies a largely unexplored area of 2,915 square kilometers (720,312 acres).

KaengKrachan was declared a national park on 12 June 1981. The park is located 53.5 kilometers from the city and is 3 kilometers beyond KhueanKaengKrachan (KaengKrachan Dam) where there are a plenty of water activities such as cruising along the reservoir or fishing. With the large area of forests, camping and trekking are also popular activities here. The highest peak called Panerntung is the spot of the most picturesque scene which is the sea of fog during rainy and winter season. KaengKrachan is also famous for its natural diversity and beautiful waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy seeing rare type of birds and millions of butterflies during summer.

Khao Luang Cave

Black Mountain Water Park

This enormous cave system is reached by climbing a series of steps, into the front entrance of the cave. With natural sunlight coming through some of the caves roof openings, you’ll see incredible Buddha statues, commissioned to be built by King Rama V. It also used to be a favorite spot for Royal picnics. There’s even a myth, which says the cave is actually the doorway to a mythical village where the only people who live there are beautiful young Thai women with no husbands. The brightly coloured Disney-esque structure of Hua Hin’s newest attraction beckons from a distance. Only about 10 kms from town on the Pala-U Road, the twin facilities of water park and wakeboard arena is perfect for families or group of friends to chill out and cool down without hitting the beach. Khao Hin Lek Fai

Located approximately 3 kilometers West of town, Khao Hin Lek Fai is a place to see a spectacular view of the entire town. The morning is the best time to see the picturesque view of the surroundings.

Chopsticks Hill (Khao Takiab)

is a favourite site to visit for tourists to take in the sights and view the large families of monkeys here. A few years back the monkeys seemed to be just at the top of the mountain around the bottom of the temple area, but now there are groups of them all around and down the hill almost to the fishing boat area. So “chopsticks hill” is quite interesting. And at the “bottom” of the hill the eating places near the fishing boats are very reasonably priced compared with say the night market in Hua Hin if not quite as salubrious

Pala-U Waterfall

This cascade is found on the south side of Kaeng Krachan National Park, some 60kms west of Hua Hin. The park is one of the largest in Thailand and sits right next to the Burmese (Myanmar) border.

It is a beautiful spot to visit. You will pass through stunning countryside and hills on your drive there that will only take 1 hour from Hua Hin.

Fishing

Hua Hin Fishing Lodge if you fancy some fishing and you want to bring the family.

The Hua Hin Fishing lodge has two fishing ponds, the upper pond and the lower pond. Both ponds have a casting deck and hand wash facilities. The lower pond is recommended for the more serious angler or those who want a challenge with some sporting action. There is a total of at least 39 different fish varieties across both ponds. There is also a restaurant and a children’s play ground at the lodge The Greenfield Valley Fishing & Cottage Just a 5-minute drive from The Banyan Golf Course, Greenfield Valley Fishing Resort offers accommodation with cable TV channels and balconies with lake/garden views. 2 fishing lakes are available. Air-conditioned bungalows and cottages come equipped with a tea/coffee maker and fridge.

Guests can enjoy exploring the surroundings with free bicycles provided by the resort.

Biking – Cycling - ATV – Go Karting

Hua Hin Bike Tours - is operating boutique bicycle tours in the Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan area and offering bicycle adventure tours along the “Royal Coast of Thailand”. Enjoy some of Thailand’s best cycling routes along hundreds of kilometers of beach front with amazing views of the Gulf of Thailand, tropical fruit plantations, fishing villages, and coastal mountains.

Velo Huahin to either rent one of their premium hybrid or mountain bikes or take one of their amazing bicycle tours in the Hua Hin, Cha Am, and Pranburi areas. They have tours to suit riders of all levels and can modify the tours to fit the riders preference.

The Cha Am ATV Park has three tracks with sharp curves, tall speed breakers and few bamboo bridges to test your riding skills. Track A is for practicing, learning correct driving skills, test driving and learning intensive care controlling i.e. careful use of accelerator, reducing the speed, breaking or stopping, turning, balancing, learning road signs, warnings, and directions. Track B is to have fun driving the ATV cars on adventurous, curving, uneven, and steep roads, which challenge your ability. To put to good use your skills gained from Track A and apply them to use on this track. There is an outside track cross country.

Go Kart Track - Go Kart Hua Hin is located 6 kilometres from the Hua Hin city centre. At high speeds the track is a challenge for even the most experienced go-karters.

The 700 meter long track is twice as long as the average go kart track elsewhere. The kart and drivers are timed with the ROC Professional Lap Timing System. When the race is over, the drivers are given printouts showing the total time, laps, best lap, top speed and so on..

There is a real vineyard in Hua Hin. It’s about 40 km away from Hua Hin into the mountains area on the way to the as Pala U water fall. It is recommend to take a taxi or ask your concierge as the road is not in perfect condition

The nature park of Sam Roi Yot

Literally meaning “the mountain with 300 peaks”, it is only a 45 minute drive south of Hua Hin and east of Pranburi.

The whole area is of prime ecological importance for Thailand.

Limestone mountains rise up to 605 meters from the coastal marshes making it a topographical wonder.

The weather up in the mountainsis not too hot. The friendly staff at the wine bar offer a tasting of their wines called Monsoon Valley that is made from the grapes grown at the vineyard. The wines are great especially the White Shiraz and Colombard. They also have grape juice. Fantastic views at the vineyard valley which is surrounded by mountains. The Hua Hin Hills Vineyard offers a tour of the vineyard on the back of an elephant. Hua Hin Hills Vineyard is worth a trip and suitable for all type of visitors.

Set up on a couple of downtown Hua Hin streets, it’s open every night until around 11pm. Street food stall owners set up plastic tables and chairs and, here, you can get some of the most delicious local food in Thailand. Find one of the homemade ice cream stalls with original coconut ice cream. At Hua Hin Night Market, you’ll see stalls full of bags, jewelry, pillow cases, watches, DVDs, CDs and many other articles. You will need to bargain and you’ll get a good price.

ucked away and secluded high the Eastern Himalayas, the ancient Kingdom of Bhutan slumbers with it´s unique customs and people with deeply held beliefs.

Besides the stunning natural scenery, the enduring

image of the country for most visitors is the strong sense of culture and tradition that binds the kingdom and clearly distinguishes it from its larger neighbors. The national language is Bhutanese (Dzongkha), one of 53 languages in the Tibetan language family. The land consists mostly of steep and high mountains crisscrossed by a network of swift rivers, which form deep valleys before draining into the Indian plains. Elevation rises from 200 m in the southern foothills to more than 7,000 m.

This great geographical diversity combined with equally diverse climate conditions contributes to Bhutan’s outstanding range of biodiversity and ecosystems.

The highest point in Bhutan is Gangkhar Puensum at 7,570 metres , which has the distinction of being the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.

Eating in Bhutan Rice, buckwheat, and increasingly maize, are the staples of Bhutanese cuisine. The local diet also includes pork, beef, yak meat, chicken, and mutton. Soups and stews of meat and dried vegetables spiced with chillies and cheese are prepared. Ema datshi, made very spicy with cheese and chilies, might be called the national dish for its ubiquity and the pride that Bhutanese have for it.

Dairy foods, particularly butter and cheese from yaks and cows, are also popular, and indeed almost all milk is turned to butter and cheese.

Popular beverages include butter tea, locally brewed ara (rice wine) and beer. Bhutan is the first country in the world to have banned the sale of tobacco under its Tobacco Act of 2010.

Wild Life and Environment Bhutan has a rich primate life, with rare species such as the golden langur. The Bengal tiger, greater one-horned rhinoceros, clouded leopard, hispid hare and the sloth bear live in the lush tropical lowland and hardwood forests in the south.

In the temperate zone, grey langur, tiger, Indian leopard, goral and serow are found in mixed conifer, broadleaf and pine forests. Fruit bearing trees and bamboo provide habitat for the Himalayan black bear, red panda, squirrel, sambar, wild pig and barking deer.

Bhutan is seen as a model for proactive conservation initiatives.

The Kingdom has received international acclaim for its commitment to the maintenance of its biodiversity.

This is reflected in the decision to maintain at least sixty percent of the land area under forest cover, to designate more than 40% of its territory as national parks, reserves and other protected areas, and most recently to identify a further 9% of land area as biodiversity corridors linking the protected areas. Environmental conservation has been placed at the core of the nation’s development strategy, the middle path.

It is not treated as a sector but rather as a set of concerns that must be mainstreamed in Bhutan’s overall approach to development planning and to be buttressed by the force of law.

Climate The climate in Bhutan varies with elevation, from subtropical in the south to temperate in the highlands and polar-type climate, with year-round snow in the north.

Bhutan experiences five distinct seasons: summer, monsoon, autumn, winter and spring. Western Bhutan has the heavier monsoon rains; southern Bhutan has hot humid summers and cool winters; central and eastern Bhutan is temperate and drier than the west with warm summers and cool winters. Treks are the best way to see and “feel” the country.

The Snowman Trek below is the toughest but there are plenty of other easy and fun hikes and treks.The recommended season for this trek is mid-June to mid-October.

Getting there and Visa procedure Paro Airport is the only international airport in Bhutan. Yongphulla Airport in Trashigang is a small domestic airport that underwent upgrades through 2010 and served only by the country’s flag carrier Druk Air .

Druk operates 2 planes (two airbuses) which fly routes to Bangkok, Kolkata, Delhi, Dhaka, Gaya, Kathmandu, Siliguri (Bagdora) and Yangon.

Note that Druk Air will not issue tickets without a visa clearance number. E-tickets have been in use since April 1st 2008.

Everybody except citizens of India and Bangladesh must apply for a visa at least 30 days in advance of their proposed date of entry into Bhutan.

While the visa itself costs a reasonable US$20 for 14 days (extendable once), the visa will not be issued without pre-paid bookings for a tour, which cost US$200 per day. These fees include room, board, guide, and transportation within Bhutan.

Bangkok The City of Angels A BRIEF HISTORY OF BANGKOK

F

rom 1350 until 1767 the capital of Siam, the former name of Thailand, was Ayutthaya, 85 kilometres north of Bangkok. During this time Thai culture flourished, 33 different kings reigned, and the city became a major centre for international commerce.

The population grew to one million inhabitants. The present day Ayuthaya, at the confluence of the Chao Phraya, Pa Sak and Lopburi rivers, is well worth visiting since there are many historic ruins, two museums and numerous old temples and monasteries.

Since the late 1700s, Bangkok has been Thailand’s largest and most important city. In 1767, after the Burmese sacked and burned Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Siam (now named Thailand), the capital was moved down the Chao Phraya River to Thon During the reigns of King Rama II (1768–1824; r. 1809– 1824) and Rama III (r. 1824–1851), many of the city’s Buddhist monasteries (called wats) were constructed. In addition to their religious functions, the wats served as centers of learning, medicine, and recreation.

Buri or Old Bangkok, on the west bank of the river. In 1782 King Rama I (1737–1809;r. 1782–1809), upon ascending to the throne, moved the capital to a village across the river.

This move was strategic, putting the wide Chao Phraya River between the capital and the often-invading Burmese.

The village across the river was then composed mostly of Chinese traders and was known as Bangkok, which translates as “Village of Wild Plums.”

Major temples included the Wat Arun, the Wat Yan Nawa, and the Wat Pho. During this period, however, the rest of the city was neglected. The kings built few other major public buildings and almost no paved roads. Average citizens relied on a series of interconnected canals (khlongs) for transportation.

Rama I wanted his new capital to equal the splendour of Ayutthaya, which had served as the country’s capital for more than 400 years. By the end of his reign, Bangkok was a thriving city, and King Rama I had established a walled palace complex, the Grand Palace, and a major Buddhist temple, the Wat Phra Kaeo. To fortify the new capital, Rama I ordered the construction of a seven-kilometre-long (four-and-a-half-mile-long), three-meter-high (ten-foothigh) wall along the river, which further protected the city from invasion.

King Rama III was a great temple builder, and many of the temples you see today were completed during his reign in the first half of the 19th century. Fortunately the templebuilding slowed when the next king arrived on the throne; Rama IV’s initial undertaking was to build a road – the first in the city – alongside the river.

HERITAGE That was completed in 1861; by the turn of the century more roads had been completed and the Bangkok elite were travelling in horse-drawn carriages and rickshaws.

Road construction and the introduction of the automobile were major trends at the start of the 20th century, and quickly got out of control as the century proceeded. Many of the canals built hundreds of years before were filled in to create more usable land. Still, travel on the river remained a favored mode of transport.

Until the reign of Rama V (1853–1910; r. 1868–1910) public works were not a priority. The king foresaw the importance of the automobile and established a system of roadways and bridges. In addition, Rama V instituted a post and telegraph service, an electric tram service, and the State Railway.

Thailand established a constitutional government in 1932 and its civilservice headquarters was in Thonburi, a town and province adjacent to Bangkok, to encourage development there. This growth slowed during the Second World War when the Japanese occupied parts of the city of Thonburi. At the same time the Thai resistance, the Seri Thai, came into being helping the allies to undermine the occupation.

Much of Thailand’s history has been a battle for sovereignty, and while the country has suffered through many invasions, Thailand boasts that it is one of the few countries in Asia never conquered and colonized.

This point is debatable. During World War II (1939–45), though Thailand was technically allied with the Japanese, troops from Japan controlled much of Thailand and were concentrated in Bangkok.

In the past 20 years, Bangkok has expanded rapidly.

During the Vietnam War era, American soldiers used the city as a rest-and-relaxation destination. The city then had a population of 1.5 million, a population that has since ballooned to approximately ten million.

The increase in population means congestion and pollution in the city. Air pollution in Bangkok is perhaps the worst in the world, and the overcrowding and lack of planning have impacted everything from transportation to drinking water to housing.

In the 1990s, Bangkok had close to one million registered motor vehicles, along with an ever-expanding superhighway system. Most of Bangkok’s canals were filled in and paved over to make new roads. This replacement caused parts of the city to sink, and annual flooding has become a problem.

During the ’60s there was another invasion. American servicemen on R&R during the Vietnam War brought a dubiously welcome boom to the economy.

The sex trade that was created, with its go-go bars, seedy nightclubs and massage parlors, continues today. Much of the money that found its way into the Thai treasury went to improve the city’s infrastructure.

Despite modern problems, however, the city retains much of its ancient charm. Bangkok’s colourful markets, historic buildings, and ornate temples attract millions of tourists each year.

ENVIRONMENT The middle part of the tail is greenish blue, azure colors of the deep basal part. The outer tail feathers are light blue, greenish blue in the middle. The coverts are deep ultramarine blue, the coverts light blue with whitish inclusions. The secondaries, the bases and tips of the primaries are tired of dark azure. In between is a characteristic, existing only in this Roller, light blue to turquoise wings band that widens toward the front edge of the wing. The almond-shaped eyes are dark and surrounded by an orange skin region, the powerful hooked beak is dark horn color. The short feet and toes are bright yellow.

The sexes do not differ in color, possibly the females are slightly smaller and lighter Young birds are much paler and more olive colored. The bright blue head plate is greenish.

Of vertebrates the Indian Roller catches mice, voles, and small snakes, lizards, toads and birds. Some populations appear to have specialized in fishing.

he Indian Roller (coracias benghalensis) is a in Southeast Asia quite widespread and frequently occurring specie. Like all coraciiformes is also the Indian roller a highseat hunter,

that feeds mainly on large insects. Most populations of this species seem to be more or less settled, but the migratory behavior of Indian Rollers is insufficiently explored yet. They nest in natural cavities and half-caves, sometimes in abandoned woodpecker holes. There are three subspecies, none of which are currently threatened according to IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

Behavior They live singly or in pairs. Only rarely, especially when seasonal food surplus, occurs or during larger movements, we can see them in small groups. They claim during the year, but particularly strongly during the breeding season territories whose boundaries are regularly flown in a slow, low patrol. Particularly aggressively defend Indian Rollers the immediate vicinity of the nest site. In this area, it can happen that people be attacked directly.

Features The Indian Roller is a somewhat clumsy-looking, large-headed, shortnecked, colorful bird with a maximum length of 34 centimeters and a weight of about 170 grams. It is about the size of a jay, which habitually are similar, but not in the color scheme.

Indian Rollers are colored very noticeable in bright blue, turquoise and cream brown. In addition to the greenish-brown coloration of the back , often shiny metallic and iridescent shades of blue.

In the nominate the back is greenish tinted dark sand color, the more reddish brown colored neck. Cheeks, throat, and chest are clear whitish longitudinal stripes on a violet background. The crest is shiny metallic light blue, above the beak approach is a narrow white box.

Belly and rump are washed out light blue. The medium length tail is cut straight and is completed by a sleek, deep ultramarine blue ribbon.

Distribution area is widespread in many parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia. Their range extends from the east coast of the Persian Gulf and spread some islands in the east of the Arabian Peninsula (Oman, United Arab Emirates) eastward across the southern Iran, southern Pakistan, almost the entire Indian subcontinent to the coast of the South China Sea. They also settle in Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Hainan. To the north, the range reaches the southern slopes of the Himalayas in Nepal and Sikkim.

In this large and climatically very different distribution area, the specie inhabited very different habitats. Indian Rollers settle in palm groves, plantations of various kinds, in light deciduous forests, wooded pastures, parks and cemeteries, but also in dry acacia savannah and herds of mesquite bushes. They are not hunted in most regions of its range, so that they penetrate into built-up areas and in villages and towns can be frequent. In Oman, they are the birds of the Green Islands in county traffic zones,. Almost every major roundabout area seems to house a resident pair as residences.

The Project Street Dog Hua Hin’s Shelter: A dedicated group of Dog Lover’s under the name Project Street dogs in Hua Hin are in the process of collecting funds to build a new dog recuperation Centre in Hua Hin. The enclosure will be used to house homeless Soi dogs that are recuperating from injuries & operations including sterilization. The shelter will house the dogs until they are well enough to go back on the street.

Since founding Project Street Dog Hua Hin in 2011, the group has sterilized over 300 dogs and hope to continue to do so.

To raise the amount needed to build the appropriate shelter the Hua Hin Street Dog Lover’s Festival, the aim is to raise some, if not all, of the THB 300,000 needed to make this future facility possible.

For this event Thailand’s own Soi Dog Foundation is the main partner and supporter.

The History of Thailand’s Economy

T

hailand, formerly known as Siam, opened to foreign contact in the pre-industrial era. Despite the scarcity of resources in Siam, coastal por ts and cities and those at the river mouth were early economic centres which welcomed merchants from Persia, the Arab countries, India and China. The rise of Ayutthaya during the four teenth century was connected to renewed Chinese commercial activity, and the kingdom became one of the most prosperous trade centres in Asia.

When the capital of the Kingdom moved to Bangkok during the 19th century, foreign trade (par ticularly with China) became the focus of the government.

Chinese merchants came to trade; some settled in the country and received official positions.

A number of Chinese merchants and migrants became high dignitaries in the cour t.From the midnineteenth century onward, European merchants were increasingly active.

Thailand is considered a newly industrialized country.

A sharp decrease in the value of the baht abruptly increased foreign debt, undermining financial institutions. Many were sold, in par t, to foreign investors while others went bankrupt. Due to low international reserves from the Bank of Thailand’s currencyprotection measures, the government had to accept a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Overall, Thailand received $17.2 billion in aid. In 2012, according to the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board, Thailand had a GDP of THB11.375 trillion (US$366 billion). A positive recovery. The Thai economy grew by 6.5 percent, with a headline inflation rate of 3.02 percent and an account surplus of 0.7 percent of the country’s GDP. In 2013, the Thai economy was expected to grow in the range of 3.84.3 percent. After seasonally adjusted, however, the Thai GDP contracted by 1.7 percent and 0.3 percent in the first and the second quar ters of 2013, respectively. Given a contraction in two consecutive quar ters, technically speaking, the Thai economy was heading into recession.

Its economy is heavily expor t-dependent, with expor ts accounting for more than two-thirds of its gross domestic product (GDP). Tourism accounts for approx. 6% of GDP with more than 14 million tourist a year since 2006.

The Thai economy collapsed as a result of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. The foreign debt had risen to $109,276 billion (65 percent of which was shor t-term debt), while Thailand had $38,700 billion in international reserves. Many loans were backed by real estate, creating an economic bubble.

Within a few months, the value of the baht floated from THB25/ USD (its lowest point) to THB56/USD. The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) dropped from a peak of 1,753.73 in 1994 to a low of 207.31 in 1998. The country’s GDP dropped from THB3.115 trillion at the end of 1996 to THB2.749 trillion at the end of 1998.

FINANCIAL NEWS Despite the political turmoil plaguing the kingdom in 2014, the Land of Smiles is hard at work at promoting Thailand as a place for tourists to celebrate Chinese New Year – Thai New Year, Easter and Summer Vacations.Last year, 100,000 tourists from China visited during the New Year festivities.

With China now such a major source of revenue for hotel operators and shop owners in Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin and other Thai destinations, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is hyping what it calls in a statement the “spectacular highlights” of events designed to emphasize “the strong tie between the Thai and Chinese communities.”

Not strong enough to withstand the latest escalation of Thailand’s power struggle, though. The number of Chinese tourists visiting the resor t island of Phuket plunged by 40 percent in January, the president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, told reporters. The picture is even worse for Bangkok; the capital will suffered a 70 percent fall in Chinese tourist arrivals.

Not everyone is downbeat. Investors willing to brave the upcoming uncer tainty can pick up some inexpensive stocks.

The benchmark Thai index is down 4.2 percent since the start of 2014 and 11.5 percent from a year earlier.

Also: China will possibly sign deals to buy one million tons of rice from Thailand after its specialists inspected a rice warehouse in Suphan Buri, a senior Thai Commerce Ministry said. Eighteen rice traders joined the Thai government’s auction for 420,000 tonnes of rice in April, reflecting high market demand and the The first regional rice auction held in Suphan Buri on Wednesday was a success, with eight groups submitting bids.

Iraq announced the are set to resume buying Thai rice after halting purchases for almost a year on concerns about quality.

The United States and other countries are interested in

purchasing rice from Thailand under government-to-government contracts, for a combined volume of more than 1.6 million tonnes, says the US Foreign Trade Department.

Thai rice exports rose to 1.4 million tonnes in the first two months of 2014, up 40% from the same period in 2013, Asian rice prices will keep slumping from a near six-year low as Thailand clears out record stockpiles, threatening a price war with Vietnam and India.

Bangkok Motor Show

T

he first ever motor show in Thailand took place from the 2nd April 1979 to the 6th of April 1979. The motor show received 380.000 visitors during the 5 days it were open to the public. The Motor Show became a big annual event on the Thailand Automotive Calendar and a decade later, Prachin Eamlumnow (Founder of the Bangkok Motor Show) was nicknamed the “King of Motor Show”.

This year the Motor Show recorded more than 1,800,000 visitors. The Bangkok Motor Show is also a buyers exhibition at which “deals” can be made with considerable promotional discounts for some models.

Apart from cars and motorcycles, motorbikes, Stereo equipment and other accessories are on display and for sale.

The Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Porsches and Ferraris were flanked by Toyota and other affordable family budget orientated vehicles. Even though some Mercs, BMW and Audis are still way out of middle income range , it was a delight to bathe, touch and do “as if ” in public.

Going there was more of a hassle as roads were blocked by protesters but motorbike taxis found ways and means to slip through handicaps and obstacles.

There were a number of activities ranging from Rally to Off Road competitions , the election of a Miss Motor Show 2014 and a wide variety of tuned vehicles from Automotive Clubs.

You may begin gathering the necessary papers and documents before your appointment, but don’t delay meeting with a social worker for too long. The Child Adoption Centre is located at: 255 Ratchawithi Road, Bangkok, 10400 – email: adoption@loxinfo.co.th

f you live in Thailand, it is possible to go through the Thai adoption process without the aid of a private agency. The task of submitting a Thai adoption application with the Child Adoption Center in

Bangkok can seem overwhelming. Take it one step at a time and you will soon be ready to be matched with a wonderful Thai child.

The next step is to wait for your social worker to request a home study.

You will receive a visit from a social worker from the local DSDW office.

The social worker will ask questions about your family, members in your household, your reason for adoption of a Thai child, etc. She may also ask to look around your house and take a few photos for her home study report.

You may have questions swirling around in your head. Is it possible to adopt while living in Thailand? Is it a difficult process? How long will it take? I can’t speak Thai very well, so how can I do it myself?

What are Thai adoption requirements for foreign adoptive parents?

In general, the legal requirements to adopt are lengthy and quite detailed. In general, the following are some basic requirements:

Now that the home study is completed, your application will be reviewed and approved. We were approved within two months after our home visit from the social worker.

1) Adoptive parents must be married at least 6 months.

After you are notified of the approval of your Thai adoption application, the waiting game continues. Then you will be matched with a Thai child.

We were told it may take 9-12 months to be matched with a child.

2) Both adoptive parents must be at least 25 years of age.

3) Both adoptive parents must be significantly older than the child to be adopted.

4) Prospective parents must be legally qualified to adopt in their own country.

More families want to adopt girls, the waiting time to be matched with a boy is shorter than for a girl. Twins and sibling groups are rarely available from Thailand.

5) Prospective parents must receive confirmation from an authorized agency in the foreign country that the adoption will be legalized before the DPW will begin the application process.

The proposed match will include a short biography of your prospective adoptive Thai child. The biography will have details such as birthplace, medical history, current residence and a few pictures of the child.

The first step is to decide whether or not adoption of a Thai child is right for your family. The Thailand adoption process can be slow. So please be prepared to wait. Once the decision to adopt a Thai child is made, the rest is easy because you will have a goal in mind and eventually you will experience the joy of welcoming a new member to your family.

Now it is up to you to review the information, decide if this match is right for your family and inform your social worker of your decision to accept or reject the match. Hopefully the match will be a good fit for your family and you can continue the Thailand adoption process.

Now it is time to compile the necessary documents needed to begin your case with the Child Adoption Centre. Once you have reviewed the Thailand adoption application and other Thailand adoption documents, make an appointment to meet with a social worker at the Child Adoption Centre.

carlo vitanza

first-class host, great opera singer and wonderful chef. These words can only be attributed to one man; Carlo Vitanza, born and raised on the beautiful east coast of Sicily, Italy.

At the young age of 15, Carlo left his southern home to start his career in the bustling city of Milan. After 2 years working at a real Italian family restaurant, Carlo made the move to Germany.

At the Holiday Inn in Koblenz he was trained as a waiter and studied the German language.

A few years later when he learned all the tricks of the hospitality trade, young Vitanza got a job at a renowned Argentinian steakhouse in Koblens. Within a short period of time he climbed up as manager and was running one of the best steak establishments of the largest city in Rheinland. Full confidence and experience at the age of 25, Carlo opened his own Argentinian steakhouse which became an immediate success.

The place was such a hit that his former boss made him “an offer he can’t refuse.” His restaurant became part of a large chain of steakhouses located in Dusseldorf, Mannheim, Koblenz and continued to work for it. Now not in the position as restaurant manager, but as general manager of 7 outlets and a staff of 120 people.

In 1988 he left the chain to set up his first Italian restaurant named Quo Vadis, located directly on the bank of the Rhein.

Hard work and an eye for detail made his business maintain a place between the top Italian restaurants of the region for 15 years.

Then in 2003, Carlo got a call from a friend who needed his expertise for setting up a new restaurant.

This pizzeria was located in Bangkok and he fell in love with Thailand immediately. Here Carlo continued his passion for hospitality which resulted in the go-to-place for Italian cuisine in Hua hin; Carlo Ristorante Italiano. The Italian that has it all; fresh produce, good location, chic interior and last but not least, excellent food for an affordable price.

We orchestrate our lifetimes, we have more power in this lifetime than we realised – we can change our life experience when we know we have options to change, when we know we’ve been here before and survived or flourished.

Start today, now, in the present moment, small steps until you can run, one step at a time will get you there figure out what you want and go for it! Masters Augusta Flash Back

T

he average audience for the weekend coverage on CBS was 8.6 million viewers in 6.4 million homes, according to Nielsen ratings finalized Thursday morning.The last time the Masters had numbers that anemic was in 1993, when Bernhard Langer won by 4 strokes. That tournament was watched by 7.9 million viewers in 5.6 million homes.

It was the first time since 1994 that both Woods and Mickelson were missing from a Masters weekend. Woods didn’t play after having surgery, and Mickelson missed the cut by 1 stroke.

The final round in April had the potential to feature the youngest winner in Masters history, with 20-year-old Jordan Spieth tied for the lead entering Sunday’s action.

But the youngster couldn’t keep up with eventual champion Bubba Watson, who earned his second Masters title by 3 strokes.

He tirelessly sought to refine the Masters experience for the patrons and competitors and the wider world of golf. Watson originally tested the clubs at his Orlando home but felt he was hooking the ball with them too much. He then had Ping’s tour reps flatten the lie angle on his irons one degree, alleviating the problem and prompting Watson to put the irons in the bag.

“I trust my feel so when it feels right to me, I trust that we’ve done the right things,” Watson told Golf World in 2013.

As with most of Watson’s clubs, the specs are far from standard. His 3-PW set is plus one half inch in length and the 3- through 5-irons have an extreme heel grind. The grips are massively oversized, too, with 10 wraps of tape on the top and 12 wraps on the bottom.

Watson’s driver also is unique. In fact, it’s two drivers in one. The pink-headed Ping G25 (8.5 degrees) features the racing stripe found on Ping’s i25 driver, making Watson’s big stick one of a kind.

The shaft is a True Temper Grafalloy BiMatrx, a graphite model with steel in the bottom section that he has used since 2004. Oh, and the sole has a rainbow-like finish, too. Watson’s driver had a D4 swingweight and the same number of wraps under the grip as his irons. His 4-wood is a Ping G25 with 16.5 degrees loft that is 42 inches long.

Although his wedges are standard, his putter -- a Ping Anser Milled 1 -- features a rainbow-like finish that Watson originally saw while visiting Ping a few years back.Watson liked the look and immediately wanted it. The putter in 34.5 inches long with 3 degrees loft.

Finally you can’t play without a ball. For Bubba it’s Titleist’s Pro V1x -- a model he has employed since he’s been on tour.

ARKOUR GENERATIONS ASIA and SWIM HUA HIN held the first, in what is hoped to be a regular event,

Parkour Adventure Camp at the beginning of the April school holidays this year.

The camp took place over two days at Somtawin English School where ten children/teenagers learnt the basics of Parkour and how to use these skills with professionals, Julien Vigroux and Chris Sotiriou, who came all the way from Bangkok for the event. Both days ended by cooling off in the pool and at the beach where the students learnt how to body-surf and had a good time with local swim teacher, Matt from SWIM HUA HIN. The children had a fun as well as educational experience and this is what they thought: “Great! Really enjoyed it. They didn’t just tell us how to do something, they could show us. I would love to do it again. Could they come every week?” ¬¬– Aelfin, 10 “It was fun, a little bit challenging, and worked the body.
