reat idea, take all cars older than 10 years off the roads. I may be wrong but that would mean taking about 90% pick-up trucks away from the farmers, small shops, hawkers, Bangkok taxis. Tourist limousines and last nut not least private households who managed to buy a second hand car after saving for many years. Yes they do something like this in Singapore…however; several steps have to be completed before a car-owner can drive the vehicle in Singapore. A Certificate of Entitlement (COE) is required, costing more than S$80,000 to successful bidders. This permits ownership of the vehicle for a period of 10 years after which the vehicle must be scrapped or another COE paid for allowing an additional 5 or 10 years of usage. Only 10 year COE’s may be further renewed. 5 year COE’s may not be renewed. According to the authorities, the 10 year scrapping plan would only apply to BKK. What a relief.

Digital devices are taking over our lives. This is sure. First thing in the morning is checking my Smartphone for messages, Gmail, WhatsApp, Line and Google+, Twitter and Facebook. My excuse is that as a journalist I need to keep up with the news and local events. What is yours, especially your kids? How attached we are to our digital devices and could it put our lives in danger? Criminality takes advantage of these distractions. This obsession with what’s going on in cyber space also seeps into our daily life, distracting us from our duties or stopping us from interacting with people in real life. However here comes the cure; Digital detox is fast becoming an emerging trend. Some travel service providers have started promoting retreats and some hotels even offer a discount if guests agree to drop their smart devices off at the reception desk. But wait, do we really need our digital devices to teach us how to take a break? Why don’t we just switch the thing off. I do on weekends. As we near the end of the year, APPROACH looks back on a busy, extremely creative period. We realize that we need to concentrate on events, places to go and our usual editorials. We have been praised by big Brothers and Sisters, both Bangkok based and internationally. As we endeavour to improve our reader service, we are also improving our website with an external webmaster, linking any hotel, restaurant and businesses to their website. Your personal feedback is highly appreciated, so please write to editorapproach@gmail.com. We try hard to please everyone. In our Thai Legal section we cooperate with a large legal firm in Bangkok and try to print every day’s reality in a formal way. Women´s Club in Hua Hin had a big gala dinner at the Hilton with Schicky Micky all over. A great evening raising money for charity as well. Reminder dates: Multi Culti Dinner & Event every 28 of the month at the Hilton. Stammtisch, the last Friday. Yours Truly, GMoss

cover story

Loy Krathong A FESTIVAL OF THAI TRADITION.

T

his important and fun-filled festival occurs every year at the full moon in the 12th month of the Thai calendar. When the moon shines at night, it makes the rivers, ponds

and sea clear and beautiful, which is suitable for floating Krathongs. Nowadays, Thai people usually prepare natural materials to make a Krathong. Translated literally, “loy” means to float and a “krathong” is a floating vessel which is traditionally made out of banana leaves, although it is not uncommon to see them constructed from synthetic materials these days. For example, they use banana trunks and lotus flowers to make a beautiful krathong then put a candle, incense stick and flowers in the krathong. They always ask for good luck in the future and forgiveness for their sins from Pra Mae Khongkha. The practise is generally recognised as originating in India from Hindu traditions of thanking the Gods for the rains and the start of the main rice harvest. Buddhist beliefs embraced the festival in Sukhothai some 700 years ago and the candle is a symbol of Buddha. Modern-day Thais believe that the act of floating the krathong away releases them from any pent-up bad feelings and that their life starts anew from this day. As with the Hindu gods of water, the festival is in honour of Phra Mae Khongkha, The Thai Goddess of Water. At the temples and tourist places, there usually is a krathong and Noppamas beauty pageants contest. There are many entertainment shows and exciting fireworks at night. If you’re in Hua Hin for this festival, you really should make a point of joining in. It usually incorporates a beauty pageant that follows a set route route around the centre of town and firework displays. All the Thais will be heading for a stretch of water, be it lake, canal or even the sea to set their krathongs afloat. (Hopefully, the tide is not incoming on this day). You will be able to find many stalls around Hua Hin selling ready made krathongs for you to “wash away your troubles and woes”.

MUSIC

M i ke S t e r n CONCERT REV IE W

T

By Mephisto - Dr. Jazz

he Bangkok Concert was an absolute highlight of professional Jazz Fusion. The life track of Mike Stern, as far as myself is concerned goes back to the 90´s when I first saw Mike with the Brecker brothers as organizer of a music festival in Geneva. He remained loyal to his fantastic guitar virtuosity. His exclusive sound and his multi expressional ability of clear and melodically guitar play is never exaggerated, whether he plays Funk, Pop, Rock or Jazz fusion or blues. The extraordinary musical communication with his co-musicians give his compositions an exclusive etiquette. Bob Malach – saxophone expressed an enormous inspired and relaxed atmosphere and rounds off the melody with a colourful content. His virtuosity is regarded as one of the most expressive saxophone contemporary players. Anthony Jackson on the 6 string electric bass proved his versatility with the contrabass sound as a backup of the musical concept. Steve Smith is recognized as one of the world´s best drummers of the last 25 years. You have to have been there to believe his incredible variety of rhythms, respectfully backing up the group only to switch to a precise dynamic rhythm play. We could only admire and praise his play. These concerts will frequent more often in Bangkok which proofs that highly professional international musicians are wanted. The theatre was almost sold out. The acoustics of the cultural centre contributed much to the success of this concert.

TRAVEL HUA HIN

Where to Go in Greater Hua Hin A GUIDE TO BEAUTIFUL HUA HIN AND NEIGHBOURS.

Hua Hin Beaches There are many beaches near Hua Hin and many of the hotels along the beach have concessions offering various water sports. Wind surfing, sailboats and para-sailing equipment are available, and “banana boat” rides can be arranged in both Hua Hin and Cha Am and there is a growing marina at the Phatra Yacht Club complex in Pranburi, about 26 km south of Hua Hin. Hua Hin and the west coast of the Gulf are becoming well known for windsurfing and kite boarding or kiting (for more info) with strong northeasterly winds. As important however is the clean water inshore and the absence of the curse of water scooters and jet skies which have ruined the east coast, especially the Pattaya and Jomtien beaches. There are dive shops in town but the shallow water around Hua Hin is not really known for its coral or reefs as this part of the gulf is not overly clear. Tours to nearby Singhtoh Island can be booked through these shops though. Half day tours for snorkelling, fishing or just hanging with the marine dudes around the island are also available.

Khao Takiab The twin hills of Khao Takiab (Chopstick Peaks) are visible to the south down the beach from Hua Hin 3-4 km and one can also make out the 20 meter tall Buddha image at the base of the hills. The walk along the beach is guaranteed to test your ankles. From the temple (Wat Khao Lad) atop the hill, Singhtoh Island, about 800 meters offshore can be seen and boats to the island can be chartered from either the Hua Hin pier or the small fishing village at Khao Takiab. Be careful of the monkeys wandering the lower grounds of the temple. They’re not fierce but enjoy grabbing eyeglasses and pens. The Khao Takiab area now boasts an increasing number of boutique hotels, guesthouses, small hotels, resorts and stylish restaurants.

Suan Son Just south of Khao Takiab is Suan Son (Sea Pine Gardens). The beach is long and quiet and there are small food shops and accommodations. Entrance is through a military camp – just tell the guard at the gate that you’re going to the beach and/or the golf course. If even there, he may charge you 20 Baht admission. Suan Son can get very crowded on weekends. There is a newly-opened golf course at the Suan Son Army Camp so this beach is ideal for families where some want to golf and some want to use the beach. Mom and Dad can golf while the kids frolic, only a couple of hundred meters from each other. Both the beach and the golf club have restaurants

Khao Tao Still heading south, beyond Suan Son is Khao Tao where the Sai Noi and Sai Yai beaches are located. These are smaller beaches but also quiet. Nok Air is flying to Hua Hin starting on 15 November 2013. There will be 3 flights each week, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, which will be ideal for weekend visitors. The flights will originate from Don Muang and the 30 minute flight will leave at 1915, arriving in Bo Fai at 1945. The return to Bangkok, Don Muang will be at 2010, arriving at 2050.

Dolphin Bay Only 38 km from Hua Hin, directly on the beach of Dolphin Bay, the resort is surrounded by Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park and some of Thailand’s most magnificent natural scenery.

Scotch &Malts UISGE BEATHA – WATER OF LIFE

S

Winston Churchill was a longstanding customer. Because of their success and their clientele, they had the absolute pick of the barrels when it came to their own label bottlings like this, only the very finest casks were selected, and the whiskies and cognacs bottled under their name in this era are regarded as of absolutely incomparable quality.

cotch whisky evolved from a Scottish drink called uisge beatha, which means “lively water” or “water of life”. The earliest record of distillation in Scotland occurred as long ago as 1494. Scotch whisky, often simply called “Scotch”, is malt whisky or grain whisky made in Scotland. Scotch whisky must be made in a manner specified by law. All Scotch whisky was originally made from malt barley. Commercial distilleries began introducing whisky made from wheat and rye in the late eighteenth century. Scotch whisky is divided into five distinct categories: single malt Scotch whisky, single grain Scotch whisky,

Another few bottles were found from the Army and Navy Stores Whisky, believed to date from the 1870-1880’s.

The cellar tags say “Mid 19th century Army and Navy old Liqueur Whisky”. These are some of the oldest whisky bottles ever found. Identical bottles from this same source were tested using radiocarbon dating techniques at Oxford University, and were confirmed as dating from the era 1897-1925 (as precise as this test can be). Copies of all the relevant documentation will be provided to purchasers of these bottles.

blended malt Scotch whisky (formerly called “vatted malt” or “pure malt”), blended grain Scotch whisky, and blended Scotch whisky. All Scotch whisky must be aged in oak barrels for at least three years. Any age statement on a bottle of Scotch whisky, expressed in numerical form, must reflect the age of the youngest whisky used to produce that product. A whisky with an age statement is known as guaranteed-age whisky

Blended Malt Scotch Whisky

There are two basic types of Scotch whisky, from which

The term ‘Blended Malt’ has proven a controversial choice by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) since its introduction in 2008 in the wake of the Cardhu scandal - when Diageo tried to bottle a blended malt under the name of one of their single malt distilleries, Cardhu, to keep up with demand. The term refers to blends of malt whiskies from more than one distillery, bottled without the addition of grain whisky.

all blends are made:

Single malt Scotch whisky means a Scotch whisky produced from only water and malted barley at a single distillery by batch distillation in pot stills. Single grain Scotch whisky means a Scotch whisky distilled at a single distillery but, in addition to water and malted barley, may involve whole grains of other malted or unmalted cereals. “Single grain” does not mean that only a single type of grain was used to produce the whisky—rather, the adjective “single” refers only to the use of a single distillery (and making a “single grain” requires using a mixture of grains, as barley is a type of grain and some malted barley must be used in all Scotch whisky).

translate for new customers to whisky in foreign markets. Nonetheless, the ‘blended malt’ classification has been almost universally derided by whisky experts and distilleries alike, their argument being that ‘vatted’ malt is a term that is both descriptive and easily explained, while the term ‘blended malt’ can very easily be confused for ‘blended whisky’ by those new consumers who have a limited grasp of English and little or no understanding of what ‘malt’ actually means.

The Rarest Scotch whisky is more than a century old: Highland Park Reserve 1902, bottled by Berry Bros. An incredible early bottling of one of the aristocrats of single malts.

By virtue both of the their age and their quality, these are arguably the most important bottles of Highland Park in existence. In the period 1900 – 1940, Berry Bros were the greatest wine merchant in the world, supplying not only the British Royal Family, but all the crowned heads of Europe, and most heads of state as well.

APPR OACH M AGAZINE

Previously, these ‘non-single’ malt whiskies were known as either ‘pure’ or ‘vatted’ malts, but the SWA rejected both these classifications in new legislation, arguing that the historical term ‘pure’ was vague, nondescriptive and open to abuse, while ‘vatted’ was perceived as unglamorous, confusing and difficult to

The

Future of

Water

WATER – AN ESSENTIAL RESOURCE OF LIFE.

W

Attempts to create sustainable freshwater systems have been seen on a national level in countries such as Australia, and such commitment to the environment could set a model for the rest of the world.

ater resource management is the activity of planning, developing, distributing and managing the optimum use of water resources. In an ideal

world, water resource management planning has regard to all the competing demands for water and seeks to allocate water on an equitable basis to satisfy all uses and demands. This is rarely possible in practice. Especially in Thailand, the management of water resources is not an easy task as we have heavy rain and periods of extreme draught. Water is an essential resource for all life on the planet.

The field of water resources management will have to continue to adapt to the current and future issues facing the allocation of water. With the growing uncertainties of global climate change and the long term impacts of management actions, the decision-making will be even more difficult. It is likely that ongoing climate change will lead to situations that have not been encountered. As a result new management strategies will have to be implemented in order to avoid setbacks in the allocation of water resources.

Of the water resources on Earth only three percent of it is fresh and two-thirds of the freshwater is locked up in ice caps and glaciers. Of the remaining one percent, a fifth is in remote, inaccessible areas and much seasonal rainfall in monsoonal deluges and floods cannot easily be used.

Presently in Hua Hin we draw water from two major sources, the Pranburi dam and Kengkrachang dam.

At present only about 0.08 percent of all the world’s fresh water is exploited by mankind in ever increasing demand for sanitation, drinking, manufacturing, leisure and agriculture.

The by far largest consumers of water are the golf courses of which some have drilled for ground water wells. Agriculture and Golf courses that use chemicals to combat insects (insecticides), enable chemicals to sicker into ground water.

One of the biggest concerns for our water-based resources in the future is the sustainability of the current and even future water resource allocation. As water becomes more scarce the importance of how it is managed grows vastly. Finding a balance between what is needed by humans and what is needed in the environment is an important step in the sustainability of water resources.

Waste Disposal & the Environment FLUSHING FOOD WASTE THROUGH THE WASTE WATER SYSTEM.

F

or years, the great garbage-disposal wars have been going on without most of us even noticing. Cities like Bangkok along with many cities in Europe and America —banned electric kitchen disposals altogether, arguing that the added food waste would overtax

the water-treatment system. Meanwhile, the appliance manufacturers—along with homeowners and restaurants who prefer getting rid of food through the drain—have argued that the disposal is actually a green machine, reducing the amount of trash sent to landfills. It is true that with the major exception of grease and fats—which can block pipes and cause overflows—water-treatment systems are designed pretty well to handle most of the scraps you might have left over from dinner. The leftovers you shovel into the sink will eventually make their way to a wastewater plant, where the sewage goes through “grit treatment,” which strains out the largest solid matter. Whatever stuff gets separated from the water is either landfilled, condensed into fertilizer, or digested by microorganisms. Some resorts in the greater Hua Hin area have their own waste recycling systems. Still, dumping waste into the water system has environmental costs. However it takes a considerable amount of energy to truck all that garbage from your curb to a landfill. The decomposition of your trash in the landfill will likely result in more damaging greenhouse gas emissions, since the breakdown of your food waste may produce methane so quickly that it can’t be captured. By contrast, some wastewater-treatment systems are actually looking for more food solids, since that will make the process of converting waste into energy more efficient. Wastewater-treatment plants also provide a way to reuse leftover food as fertilizer—although critics have expressed concerns that the use of bio solids on land may not always be safe . Don’t put anything that is greasy or fatty through your kitchen sink. And find out whether your local water-treatment plant captures methane to produce energy. If it doesn’t—and your local landfill does—you may be better off tossing those mashed potatoes in the trash. In Hua Hin, we unfortunately have a large bad smelling garbage belt just off Soi 112. They do not recycle and just pile the smelly garbage . Waste disposing moral is not sophisticated among residents and garbage is thrown out of cars on road sides. For a top tourist destination such as our town the municipality should really enforce strict laws and punishments for trespassers and maybe place waste containers in rural areas to encourage proper waste disposal. Tip: Disposing of household paint and other hazardous household waste Products such as paint, weed killers, pesticides, household cleaners and chemicals, creosote, fuel and other flammable liquids, motor oil, motor fluids, tyres, fluorescent tubes, etc, are all deemed hazardous and potentially damaging to the environment if disposed of incorrectly. They should never be disposed of by placing in your normal rubbish bin or by tipping down the drain.Try to avoid these products becoming waste in the first place by only buying enough of the product required for the job and try and use up all of the product, for example, by spreading another coat to use up the last amount. Once completely empty, the containers of paint products and other chemical products may be placed in the normal rubbish bin.

ongoing economic downturn in Europe. Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad remained top of the rich list compiled by the Bilanz business magazine, with an estimated fortune of SFr 38-39 billion. But his SFr 3 billion growth in wealth paled in comparison with brewery investor Jorge Lemann, whose fortune doubled to SFr 18 billion. Bilanz put the 6.5 per cent growth in collective wealth mainly down to the revival in global stock markets so far this year. While the list contains many “home grown” multi-millionaires and billionaires, the attractive tax regime in many Swiss cantons has attracted people who made their fortunes overseas. Swedish entrepreneur Kamprad made his home in canton Vaud many years ago while Lemann, born in Brazil to Swiss immigrant parents, now lives in Zurich. The total pool of money owned by the 300 wealthiest Swiss individuals - or families – has yet to reach the record level of SFr 529 billion seen in 2007, just before the financial crisis.

Everyone is wealthy! The Swiss population remains, on average, the wealthiest on the planet, according to data released by Credit Suisse last month.

Despite a 13% drop in individual wealth from last year, the average pot of savings per head in Switzerland is still comfortably above the nearest competitor, at $468,000.

Both Glencore men saw their money go down the drain after shares plummeted shortly after the company was publicly listed. However, they remain multi-billionaires despite being the biggest losers of last year.

versus versus EUROPE vs. USA

By George Irvin Research Professor at SOAS in London

WHICH ECONOMY WINS? Many Europeans are deeply ambivalent about the economic performance of the European Union. “The EU was meant to bring us a golden future, but instead it has brought us stagnation, unemployment and social discontent” has become a familiar refrain

both GDP growth per head and labour productivity are growing faster in the US. On the EU-15 side, lower growth is reflected in a high and prolonged average rate of unemployment, which has remained about three points above that of the US for some time. Equally, looking at the disaggregated data, some EU-15 countries have done better than others over the past decade in terms of prosperity and unemployment; e.g., the UK, Ireland and the Nordic countries.

In what sense is the US richer? - Average gross domestic product (GDP) in the US is about 40% higher than average GDP of the EU-15 when measured at purchasing power parity (PPP). The gap is slightly greater if we consider either the twelve Eurozone members (EU-12) or add the accession states (EU-25). The main reason the US is richer is, first of all, because a higher proportion of Americans are in employment and secondly, they work about 20% more hours per year than Europeans. Americans join the work force earlier and leave it far later than Europeans. The key to understanding why this has happened is the change in US income distribution over the past 30 years. Since 1979, the bottom 40% of income earners in the US has been treading

Employment and Unemployment - Perhaps the most common argument is that contrasting the job-creating virtues of the US ‘flexible’ labour market with the sclerotic state of the EU, where unemployment is persistently high. Now while it is true that the US has a better employment and unemployment record, the key to understanding the difference between the EU and the US lies in desegregating employment by age group. The picture remains much the same when comparing the US and the EU-25.

US Federal Reserve

Who wins? - Comparing the economic performance of the European Union and the USA does not lead one to conclude that America has the more dynamic economy, or that it has performed better in the past or will do so in future. The most important feature of the comparison is neither the growth nor the unemployment record of the US and the EU. It is, rather, that US growth, unlike that in the EU, is funded by a dangerously high mountain of foreign debt. US external indebtedness, in turn, is driven by the US house-price bubble, enabling US consumers to spend more than they earn. Ironically, it is the EU which, together with China and Japan, continues to lend the money to the US which keeps their households spending and their economy growing.

water, while the bottom 20% has become poorer. US workers have needed to put in more years and longer hours simply to maintain their real income position.

The truth is that neither side ‘wins’ in this beauty contest. Europe merely does less badly than the USA in some crucial respects. Yes, while it is true that the core Eurozone countries could perform far better, Germany, France and Italy have quite different problems – in comparison both to the US and to each other – which require quite different solutions. Anybody who claims that the US provides a model which the EU should copy needs to consider the basic economic facts of the case.

Who has Faster Growth? - Does the US grow faster than the EU? Expressed on a per capita basis, GDP growth rates in the US and the EU are virtually the same over the past decade. The same is true of labour productivity growth. What is also true is that since the 2001 recession, the US has bounced back faster than the EU. At present, APPR OACH M AGAZINE

Thailand Holds Interest Rate The Thai finance ministry last month cut its forecast for expansion this year to 3.7 percent from 4.5 percent, and its export growth prediction to 1.8 percent from 5.5 percent, citing weak overseas sales, slowing local demand and delayed government spending. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s two-year-old administration has tried to speed up budget disbursement as plans to spend 2 trillion baht ($64 billion) on infrastructure and 350 billion baht on water-management projects have stalled. The federal budget for the fiscal year from Oct. 1 received a court approval on Oct. 4, while the bill to finance infrastructure projects is still in parliament.

Prime Minister MinisterYingluck Yingluck Shinawatra Shinawatra Prime

Total loans to Thai households rose to 9.28 trillion baht in the quarter through end-June, compared to 8.98 trillion baht in the previous three-month period, according to central bank data. Second-quarter household debt was 81.5 percent of GDP, compared with 78.9 percent in the first three months, according to calculations by Bloomberg.

THAI BAHT ADVANCED AGAINST A DECLINING US DOLLAR. Thailand kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged for a third straight meeting, refraining from monetary easing even as the threat of a U.S. debt default adds to growth risks from rising household debt and weakening exports. The Bank of Thailand held its one-day bond repurchase rate at 2.5 percent, with all six monetary policy committee members present voting in favor, it said in Bangkok today. Senate Democratic and Republican leaders said they are resuming negotiations toward a solution that would reopen the U.S. government and prevent the nation from running out of borrowing authority on Oct. 17. Thailand’s decision to hold borrowing costs is at odds with the Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, who said this month the rate is “too high.”

The Thai finance ministry last month cut its forecast for expansion this year to 3.7 percent from 4.5 percent,

The government last month agreed to expand subsidies for rice and rubber farmers to quell protests, a move seen as undermining the government’s efforts to curb rising debt.

The Baht advanced 2.9 percent against the Dollar last month, the third-best performance among Asia’s 11 most-traded currencies tracked by Bloomberg, after the Federal Reserve decided to postpone tapering its monthly asset purchases, diminishing the risk of capital outflows from emerging markets.

Falling commodity prices may increase pressure on the economy, which unexpectedly contracted 0.3 percent in the three months through June from the previous quarter, when it shrank by 1.7 percent, official data showed. Exports (THCTEXPY) rose 3.9 percent in August from a year earlier, the first gain in four months. Consumer prices climbed 1.42 percent in September from a year earlier, the least since Oct. 2009.

The Asian Development Bank this month lowered its growth forecasts for developing Asia, and international finance chiefs last week warned that failure by U.S. lawmakers to resolve their debt spat would hurt the global recovery.

COOL STUFF

The Newest Wannahaves of November Panasonic Toughpad 4K The centerpiece feature of the Panasonic Toughpad 4K is, of course, the large 20-inch display with a 3,840 x 2,560 resolution, allowing you to view 4K content in full resolution. It was designed with visual creatives (think architects, artists, designers) in mind, so the guts are equipped for the kind of heavy graphics work those guys will do: Intel Core i5vPro, Nvidia GeForce GT 745M, 8GB of RAM, and SSD storage (128GB or 156GB). Since a lot of sketching work is likely going to be done right on the screen, it comes with the Bluetooth-enabled Anoto Live Pen that boasts 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity, allowing it to be used for UI input, sketching and even writing. A higher-performance version of the tablet for 3D simulation and CAD design will be released afterwards.

Affordable Slow-Motion Camera

Kapture Wristband Mic

Dedicated super slow-motion cameras are great for a whole load of uses, from reviewing fast-paced game footage to watching high-speed objects move in deliberate fashion. They’re especially useful for mad scientists who need to capture their experiments in excruciating detail. The high ticket prices for such cameras, however, keep them out of most people’s reach. While the Edgertronic isn’t exactly cheap, it does bring high-FPS video capture to the hands of mad scientists with moderate funds for world domination.

The Kapture is a water-resistant wristband consisting of a silicone band with a plastic grille on top that houses an omnidirectional microphone, a Bluetooth radio, and an accelerometer. The hardware constantly records audio on a 60-second loop -- tap the grille once and the latest 60-second audio will be sent to the accompanying app on your phone. That way, if you come up with a clever line trying to impress a cute girl in a bar during the heat of the moment, all you need to do is tap the wristband to save the quip, making it easier to reuse when the same situation comes up again down the line.

Playstation Vita TV Designed to function as a mini-game-console, the device allows folks to play PS Vita games right on a TV. Even better, you play them with a DualShock 3 controller, so you get a gaming experience similar to what you can get playing on a full-featured Sony game console. The bad news? It won’t support all PS Vita games, since a lot of the new titles use alternative controls that the DualShock 3 can’t handle (think webcam, touchscreens and all that), although Sony has announced it can work with over 100 PS Vita games, over 600 PSP titles, and over 600 PS1 and PC Engine games right out of the box.

3D Monopoly New York Edition The 3D Monopoly New York Edition measures 23.5 x 23.5 x 2 inches (l x w x h), giving pretend property tycoons a bigger, wider playing space than the classic version of the game. All the property spaces are covered in detailed 3D artwork, with a center rolling area containing a colorful rendition of Rockefeller Center and Central Park. It includes a full set of custom pewter tokens, wooden houses, wooden hotels, money, deeds, and cards, along with a wooden banker’s tray. MOTORING

hybri d c ar s WHAT IS A TRUE HYBRID?

A

hybrid vehicle is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to move the vehicle. The term most commonly refers to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), which combine an internal combustion engine and one or more

electric motors. However other mechanisms to capture and utilize energy are included. In addition to vehicles that use two or more different devices for propulsion, some also consider vehicles that use distinct energy sources or input types (“fuels”) using the same engine to be hybrids, although to avoid confusion with hybrids as described above and to use correctly the terms, these are perhaps more correctly described as dual mode vehicles.

1) Parallel Hybrid - Series-Parallel Drivetrain In a parallel hybrid vehicle, the single electric motor and the internal combustion engine are installed such that they can power the vehicle either individually or together. In contrast to the power split configuration typically only one electric motor is installed. Most commonly the internal combustion engine, the electric motor and gear box are coupled by automatically controlled clutches.

Honda Insight

For electric driving the clutch between the internal combustion engine is open while the clutch to the gear box is engaged. While in combustion mode the engine and motor run at the same speed. The first mass production parallel hybrid sold outside Japan was the 1st generation Honda Insight.

2) Mild Parallel Hybrid These types use a generally compact electric motor (usually <20 kW) to provide auto-stop/start features and to provide extra power assist during the acceleration, and to generate on the deceleration phase (aka regenerative braking).

On-road examples include Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Insight 2nd generation, Honda CR-Z, Honda Accord Hybrid, Mercedes Benz S400 BlueHYBRID, BMW 7-Series hybrids. Honda Civic Hybrid

3) Power-Split or series-parallel hybrid Lexus RX400h

Ford Escape Hybrid

In a power-split hybrid electric drive train there are two motors: an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The power from these two motors can be shared to drive the wheels via a power splitter, which is a simple planetary gear set. The ratio can be from 0–100% for the combustion engine, or 0–100% for the electric motor, or anything in between, such as 40% for the electric motor and 60% for the combustion engine. The electric motor can act as a generator charging the batteries. Modern versions such as the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive have a second electric motor/generator on the output shaft (connected to the wheels). In cooperation with the “primary” motor/generator and

the mechanical power-split this provides a continuously variable transmission. On the open road, the primary power source is the internal combustion engine. When maximum power is required, for example to overtake, the electric motor is used to assist. This increases the available power for a short period, giving the effect of having a larger engine than actually installed. In most applications, the engine is switched off when the car is slow or stationary reducing curbside emissions. Passenger car installations include Toyota Prius, Ford Escape and Fusion, as well as Lexus RX400h, RX450h, GS450h, LS600h, and CT200h.

MOTORING

4) Series Hybrid - Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) Series-hybrid vehicles are driven by the electric motor with no mechanical connection to the engine. Instead there is an engine tuned for running a generator when the battery pack energy supply isn’t sufficient for demands. Ferdinand Porsche used this setup in the early 20th century in racing cars, effectively inventing the series-hybrid arrangement. Porsche named the arrangement “System Mixt”. A wheel hub motor arrangement, with a motor in each of the two front wheels was used, setting speed records. This arrangement was sometimes referred to as an electric transmission, as the electric

generator and driving motor replaced a mechanical transmission. The vehicle could not move unless the internal combustion engine was running. The setup has never proved to be suitable for production cars, however it is currently being revisited by several manufacturers. Supercapacitors combined with a lithium ion battery bank have been used by AFS Trinity in a converted Saturn Vue SUV vehicle. Using supercapacitors they claim up to 150 mpg in a series-hybrid arrangement. Chevrolet Volt, a series plug-in hybrid.

5) Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Another subtype of hybrid vehicles is the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The plug-in hybrid is usually a general fuel-electric (parallel or serial) hybrid with increased energy storage capacity, usually through a li-ion battery, with allows the vehicle to drive on all-electric mode a distance that depends on the battery size and its mechanical layout (series or parallel).

It may be connected to mains electricity supply at the end of the journey to avoid charging using the on-board internal combustion engine. The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid has an allelectric range of 11 mi (18 km). The Ford Fusion Energi is a plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range of 21 mi (34 km).

Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid

6) Fuel Cell, Electric Hybrid Honda FCX

The fuel cell hybrid is generally an electric vehicle equipped with a fuel cell. The fuel cell as well as the electric battery are both power sources, making the vehicle a hybrid. Fuel cells use hydrogen as a fuel and power the electric battery when it is depleted.

Road safety for Cyclists &

Hybrid vehicle emissions

Pedestrians Hybrids are importantly more silent than petrol or diesel engines. Therefore there is a warning system available in some of the vehicles to warn pedestrians and cyclists equally. The 2011 Nissan Leaf was the first plug-in electric car equipped with Nissan’s Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians.

Hybrid vehicles can reduce air emissions of smog-forming pollutants by up to 90% and cut carbon dioxide emissions in half.

THAI LEGAL TIPS

Thai Inheritance Laws – Part I THE MAKING OF A WILL UNDER THAI LAW.

By GMoss

F

to a Thai national, or if you are unmarried and have no family relationships in Thailand. Either way it is recommended to make a last will and testament, but it is not required to make a Thai last will or testament.

act is that most of us are at an advanced age, have moved to the tropics, healthy or not, the climate food , environment is not what most of us are used to. The climate may be the least of our worries as we can hide in air-conditioned places. But then again, if the unforeseen happens and we are not in a position to determine who gets what, in the event of saying au revoir, or if we have not made a will whilst earthly, Thai law rather than your home country legislation is applied.

Making a valid Last Will in Thailand does not have to be difficult, a person must follow the requirements in the Civil and Commercial Code. Before distribution half of the common property between husband and wife must first be given to the surviving spouse.

If you have NOT made a Last Will or Testament, or valid will, the law (intestacy rules) will determine what happens to your assets in the event of you passing away. Under Thai inheritance laws this generally means that the assets will be distributed amongst the statutory heirs. Under section 1629 of the Civil and Commercial Code of Thailand there are 6 classes of statutory heirs and they are entitled to inherit in the following order: 1) descendants 2) parents 3) brothers and sisters of full blood 4) brothers and sisters of half blood 5) grandparents 6) uncles and aunts. The surviving spouse is a statutory heir, subject to the special provisions of Section 1635 Civil and Commercial Code. Distribution in the absence of a will - Thai inheritance laws designate intestate heirs and so long as there is an heir surviving in one of the classes, the heir of the lower class has no entitlement to share in the assets.

Important: Trusts created by last will - Under Thai law trusts (the relationship where someone else holds the property (trustee) subject to certain duties to use and protect it for the benefit of others) created whether directly or indirectly by will or by any juristic act producing effect during lifetime or after death have no effect whatever (section 1686 Civil and Commercial Code). If the testator wants to dispose of his estate in favour of a minor or adjudged incompetent person or quasi-incompetent person he can entrust the custody and management thereof to a person other than the parents, guardian, custodian or curator, he can appoint a controller of the property by will.

The one exception is where there is a descendant and a parent in which case they take an equal share (section 1630). If there is more than one heir in any one class, they take an equal share of the entitlement available to that class. The surviving spouse is a statutory heir but their entitlement depends on what other class of statutory heir exists. If there are surviving children of the deceased, the spouse and children take the estate between them. Therefore, if there are three children, then the estate is divided in to four equal shares. Almost the same as in some European countries.

Disclaimer Note : Practical advice and tips on most common legal issues for expats in Hua Hin is mainly provided through general Thai legal information and law resources in English over the Internet. The information in APPROACH Magazine should be used as general Thai legal information but should not be treated as a substitute for specific legal advice concerning individual situations. For final legal advice, always consult a legal Thai law office and make sure they are qualified, certified lawyers and licensed to run a law office. Also note that foreign lawyers are not licenced to practice law in Thailand

Legal foreign wills are acceptable in Thai Courts subject to being translated and authorized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but the legal procedure to enforce it can take a long time. The execution of a foreign will in Thailand is always subject to a court procedure. The will has to be translated and legalized before the person making the will passes away. Making a will in Thailand - If you have NOT made a last will rules of intestacy will determine what happens to your assets when you die. The legal situation could be different if you live in Thailand and are married

APPROACH REVIEWS

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet In a heartbeat Henry remembers, Keiko, the girl he knew in the 1940’s and what her family hid in the basement. Encouraged by his memories Henry searches the basement remembering the war years, the boy he was, and Keiko, the Japanese girl with whom he forged an unforgettable friendship. The story of Henry Lee is one about father/son relationships, growing up as a Chinese immigrant in Seattle, America, forbidden bonds and the damage of World War II especially to children. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is gripping without manipulating the reader to turn the page. It is heart-wrenching and will make you think and feel. Jamie Ford writes with care and grace to capture the perspective of a Chinese boy in Seattle during the war years – “I try not to live in the past, he thought, but who knows, sometimes the past lives in me.” – is one of many lines that are composed exquisitely and shows how relatable Henry is regardless of your childhood. Next to his own research, Jamie Ford is also able to draw on his own Chinese heritage and father’s experiences.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by JAMIE FORD, Ballantine Books, RRP: 487 Baht, paperback, ISBN: -345-0-978 301 ,2009 ,7-50534 pages.

I

The book’s front cover looks as if its yellowing, which gives it a timeless feel. But don’t turn the book over to read the blurb, which seems to give too much away. At the final pages, it feels as if Ford is holding back, but endings come down to personal taste, and Ford’s was not unsatisfactory.

n 1986, Henry Lee is in his mid-fifties. His wife has passed away after seven years of battling cancer and the lack of communication between him and his son has become

blatantly awkward. Standing outside the Panama Hotel, Henry watches the owner bring out the long lost possessions of the Japanese immigrants who were sent away to internment camps during World War II. These belongings, once boarded up in the hotel’s basement for safekeeping, are now on public display seeking owners to claim them.

This debut adult novel (older teens may also enjoy) and is one of the best historical fiction novels I have come across. Honouring the lives of Asian immigrants in America, and the Jazz scene of Seattle in the 1940s, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet won’t be forgotten, it is touching, strong and beautiful.

Shakira, Shakira

hakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, is a successful Latin pop singer, songwriter and dancer. She has been singing since she was eight years old and is currently a judge/mentor on the fourth

season of the American television show, “The Voice”. Shakira’s seventh album released in 2011, Live From Paris is enjoyable and the songs are much better than her latest song from this year titled “Hot Love” which compromises her voice with unnecessary electronic assistance. Besides being the only South American to achieve a number one song in the USA, Shakira also founded the Pies Decalzos (Barefoot) Foundation at 18 years old. Using the same name as the album she released in 1995, the Pies Decalzos Foundation provides education and nutrition to more than 6,000 impoverished children in Shakira’s birthplace, Columbia. The foundation has additionally expanded its work to Haiti and South Africa. Shakira and her partner, Barcelona FC player, Gerard Piqúe are the parents of a baby boy named Milan. The album she is presently working on is inspired by motherhood and is planned to be released in the coming months. Reviews by Zara Adcock Copyright © 2013 Zara Adcock

The

Benefits of

T

Tea

RANGING FROM INCREASING MENTAL FOCUS TO PREVENTING CELLULAR DAMAGE.

he simple pleasures of drinking tea are experienced across the globe. Some well-known teas are Earl Grey, Irish Breakfast tea, African Rubus (Raspberry) tea and Chinese green, black and white tea. In many parts of the world, drinking tea is part of the culture. Tea is used for medicinal purposes in many healthcare practices such as Chinese Herbal medicine. One would need to write a book to cover all the teas available to mankind, their properties and uses.

Rose Tea is brewed from dried rose petals and tastes as exotic as it sounds. As rose tea is extremely detoxing it is best to have one cup a day at the most. Rose tea has many medicinal properties, contains vitamins A, D, K and E, organic acids and has a high level of anti-oxidants. Rose tea fights germs, helps digestion, mental health, relieves menstrual pains and stress, and strengthens the immune system. Rooibos Tea It is grown from a small shrub, which only thrives in the Cedarberg region near Cape Town, South Africa. The health benefits include powerful antioxidants, cancer prevention, caffeine free, high mineral content, iron content and protects against Parkinson & Alzheimer’s diseases whilst encouraging a rest full sleep.

Many teas have anti-oxidants and anti-viral properties that prevent cellular damage, and help fight free radicals from sun exposure and pollution. Tea also is very detoxing and soothing. Many people notice that tea helps their overall state of mind, sharpening mental focus and causing them to feel serene happiness. Whilst very healthy, tea is best consumed in moderation.

Lemon Grass Tea is exquisite and strongest when it is fresh. It has a soft citrus taste and is beneficial to nervous systems, coughs and colds. The plant can be grown in warm climates such as Thailand.

I have listed a few readily and locally available teas and their benefits. Green Tea leaves are withered, rolled and heated thus leaving them in their most natural and potent state. Oolong and black tea are more caffeinated and bitter tasting. Black tea is good for teeth and hinders plaque, it is also good for your heart. Black tea and green tea are both high in naturally occurring calcium fluoride which in moderation strengthens bones and teeth.

When Tea is used in Skin Care it helps fight free radicals, helps with aging skin and is known to help give the skin a bright and flawless complexion. Poi Products, made locally in Hua Hin, use freshly brewed organic teas in their body and skincare ranges.

Mint Tea (which is brewed from the herb leaves) is great for mental focus, upset stomachs, aches, and fresh breath.

Drinking Tea is good before/during mealtimes. The Chinese often drink green tea with their meals and oolong tea is said to be good to have with greasy food. Quality is very important when purchasing tea for more natural, effective, and luscious brews. Organic teas are best, but fortunately tea is usually grown in the highlands and therefore chemicals are not required.

Ginger Tea (brewed from ground or grated ginger root) relieves nausea, improves stomach performance, helps muscle and joint problems and assists in respiratory circulation. Chamomile Tea flowers are good for colic, digestion and relaxation.

Podology in Thailand by Dr. Dirk Weeber

THE SCIENCE OF TREATING FEET.

A

s we progress into the summer and fall of our lives, our feet which were designed to carry our wherever we want to go, have very often been mistreated, disregarded and neglected. However when they start to protest, there

are signs of fatigue due to wearing wrong shoes, slippers and neglect causing funguses and other annoyances. Podology the science of treating the feet has its origin in ancient Greece, where the word “Podos” meant the foot. It was the father of the medicine, Hypokrates, who lived hundreds of years before Christ, who is known to have first treated a foot problem. The Flamish painter David Tennier (1610 - 1690) showed the origin of the podologist in the middle ages in his painting De Bader. De Bader did wound treatments, hair cutting, teeth treatments & taking care of problems of feet. In Thailand, there are pedicure institution almost everywhere in massage parlours and barber shops, but they have no idea how to treat medical issues. This is done by dermatologists, general practitioners or general surgeons with sometimes fatal consequences.

We only know - hundreds of years ago the foot was seen as holy in Thailand, but over the years this has changed. At “The Podology Center”, which is currently the only Medical Foot Therapy Clinic group in Thailand, there still is the believe that the foot is holy and the engaged team want the people in and of Thailand to agree. Foot disease whether caused though aging , neglect or contagiously contracted bacterial infections in public showers etc., is treatable and curable. Some open wounds can also be a result of diabetes. The main focus should be on hygiene. The Podology Centers Bangkok and Chiang Mai are the first and only Medical Foot Therapy Centres in Thailand. Two branches exist. The Podology Centers are not concerned with pedicures, which are largely for aesthetic purposes, but with administrating appropriate medical treatments for feet. The treatments range from curing basic problems such as skin problems, corn removals, cracked heal treatment, in-growing nail treatment and sweat foot treatment, to curing more serious foot matters such as wounds affected by diabetes, neurological conditions or foot deformities through custom made Orthotics. More information offers the website in the Internet: www.mftthailand.com or you just simply send them an email to team@mft-thailand.com contact them in Facebook The Podology Center Bangkok - Chiang Mai or call the office in Chiang Mai 053-038084 or the hotline 0896338586. The The Hua Hin Swimming Team Competes Competes in in Bangkok Bangkok FAST WATER MEET WITH THE BANGKOK DOLPHINS

O

I was very impressed considering many of them have only just learnt to swim correctly with Swim Hua Hin in the past 12 months.

Prizes were awarded to all participants, but more importantly the swimmers now have a record of the times they swum and an understanding of how swim meets and swim competitions work. All eleven swimmers from Hua Hin did very well.

See team photo above To view photos from the day log onto www.swimhuahin.com

n October 20th Matt Adcock took the Swim Hua Hin Team to Bangkok to participate in the Fast Water Swim meet hosted by the Bangkok Dolphins. The meet was an excellent opportunity for these swimmers to gain some competitive experience in an actual standard short course pool (25 metre) with starting blocks and lane ropes.

Hopefully as more children join the Swim Hua Hin Team, more opportunities like this will arise, and I am sure one day we will have an aquatic facility in Hua Hin so we can invite other teams here.

GOLF & SPORT

Fancy a Golf Lesson? GOLF TIPS BY TOM DUZANICA - FORMER PGA GOLF PLAYER.

T

he majority of the golfing world is now in the throes of winter with snow and rain the norm but fortunately for us in Hua Hin winter means the end of the rainy season and the start of hot days and cool evenings. Perfect golf weather, as early morning players are able to play a round before it ever reaches temperatures of 30C (about 85F). Almost every afternoon has the lovely gulf winds blowing and it helps make the mid 30 temps enjoyable. I would never want to call Hua Hin a golf paradise but maybe it is just as close as you can get to paradise. All the golf tour companies, the courses and the associated golf industry are in full swing as the world descends on us to enjoy the nearly 200 holes of golf we have within a 20 mile radius.

The “Why” is because the club head is accelerating when you strike it when it was played conventionally, but by moving it more forward in the stance the clubhead gets a chance to accelerate even more and the major factor to length is clubhead speed. What it also does is allow most golfers the chance to release their hands fully and they aren’t “trapped” or “blocking” their drives which gives the ubiquitous push slice to the right. Try it, many have from pre-teen single handicap players to old farts and it seems to work for everybody who commits to it. For very strong players you may develop a slight pull but it can be compensated for quite easily by your alignment. My greatest satisfaction is in watching 60-70 year olds all of a sudden gaining 2030 yards on their drives so they now are getting off the tee 200 plus yards and all of a sudden 90% of the par fours are now reachable in two good shots and they are able to play the game the way they used to 30 years ago with chances for a few birdie putts that weren’t there before. After learning this lesson go back to lesson “one” which rhymes with done and I am. So lesson “one” said, “have fun”.

The R&A and the USGA completely fouled up and failed to address the “long putter”. The are ruling it to be illegal in a few years if it is anchored to the body while taking a stroke but it is no problem to use it for a drop. So a guy with a 6’6’’ long putter can take a drop of nearly four meters and if the ball comes to rest not nearer the whole it can roll an additional couple meters.

Tom Duzanica

So someone with this club in the bag can get more than six yards worth of relief under the rules and someone with conventional gear can only get just a little over three yards with his 45’’ driver. Where is the equity? There is a rule that doesn’t allow you to have a 6’6’’ driver in your bag. This is as much a travesty as the news that they have put bulldozers on the Old Course at St Andrews to try to make it play differently including tearing out the Road Hole bunker. I could write about this for weeks to say why it is completely wrong and show how the course has stood the test of time and should be left as it is and doesn’t need to be changed to accommodate an elite group of golfers once every five years. A few Opens ago there wasn’t a single golfer who made the cut that was able to shoot two rounds in the sixties on the weekend and the weather conditions were completely benign. No need for change there and so much need for change in regards to the six foot “cheat sticks”. Okay how about a golf lesson. About a half dozen years ago or so there was this guy in Hua Hin saying he could make anyone at any level of the game hit their tee shots much much farther. So what? You hear this all the time. The kicker was this guy said he wouldn’t change anything in your golf swing. Nothing. Zero. Who was this mystery man? Yeah you might have guessed it. Same guy who created the first over-size putter grip nearly 30 years ago to take the hands and wrists out of the putting stroke, seems like everybody is using them now. So anyway it was me. You want to drive the ball 10-20% further, no problem. Do nothing different with your swing! What? Yep. How? Easy! Why? Simple. Stop! OK. No! So it is simple, and the “How” is by simply moving the ball forward in your stance and teeing it up slightly (or more) higher. Put the ball on line with your baby toe of your left foot and not in the conventional position somewhere near the inside of the heal of your left foot. This is a huge change in the ball position as it is almost a half a foot difference from where folks conventionally position the ball. Now again I’ve said you don’t have to change your swing at all. The only real change with the swing is a new commitment to staying with your shot and keeping your head down and watch the club strike the ball (Hey “don’t lift up your head” “stay with your shot”, you’ve heard these terms a million times. SO DO IT!).

REAL ESTATE Property demand is rising fast. Total transactions by value, including both land and buildings, skyrocketed during the year to Q1 2013 by 35.3%, to THB219 billion (US$7 billion). 64% of all these transactions took place in the Central region. Total outstanding property credits rose by 13.3% during the year, to Q1 2013 to THB1.86 trillion (US$59.7 billion), according to the Department of Land, Ministry of Interior. Of these credits THB1.37 trillion (US$43.95 billion) were personal housing credits, while the remaining THB490.5 billion (US$15.7 billion) were real estate development credits. Thailand’s economy expanded by 6.4% in 2012, a sharp improvement from a meagre growth of 0.08% seen in the previous year, but still lower than the 7.8% growth recorded in 2010, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The economy is projected to grow by about 5.9% in 2013.

House Prices Rising

BOT’s Preventive Measures The BOT has released new rules in response to public anxiety that Thailand faces the risk of another property bubble, particularly in the condominium sector. The BOT’s new rules take effect in 2011 and 2012. • for condominium units under THB 10 million (USD330,300), bank loans must be limited to 90% of a home’s value, from January 1 2011 • low-rise housing loan-to-value (LTV) ratios are capped at 95%, starting January 1, 2012. • for larger loans, banks must increase risk weighting to between 75% and 100% of the loan value. At present, the risk weighting is set by the BOT for the property sector at 35%. Risk weightings are used to calculate the minimum amount of capital required to support lending. The higher the risk, the greater capital is required by banks leading to increased overall costs in the form of higher interest rates.

HOUSE PRICE BOOM IN THAILAND?

T

hai house prices are now rising at a faster pace, mainly fuelled by the country’s robust economic growth. The Thai price index for single detached houses rose by

4.63% (1.48% inflation-adjusted) during the year to end-Q1 2013, the highest year-on-year increase since Q2 2009, based on figures released by the Bank of Thailand (BOT), the country’s central bank. The condominium index which soared by 9.39% (6.1% inflationadjusted) is actually a more relevant index. Condominiums are what Bangkok people tend to live in (and foreign buyers). The longerestablished detached houses index may over-represent the rural population. Likewise, the price of other property types and land also increased during the year to Q1 2013: • The price index for townhouses rose by 6.86% (3.64% inflation-adjusted). • The residential land price index increased by 4.85% (1.69% inflation-adjusted).

Still No Property Bubble - In fact, a bubble is unlikely in the Thai property market as prices have risen naturally in the past three years, according to the Government Housing Bank (GHB), a state-owned lending agency. GHB’s president Khan Prachuabmoh insists that there is nothing unusual in the present situation, despite the substantial recent increases in low-end supply. Mortgage Lending Up! - Somewhat confirming this, the preliminary figures for personal housing credit in Q3 2010 stood at THB 1.058 trillion (USD35 billion), up by 14.7% y-o-y, according to the BOT. The strong growth may be due to the special mortgage campaign launched by the Siam Commercial Bank, the biggest mortgage lender in Thailand. The campaign allows borrowers to pay monthly installments as low as THB 1,000 (USD33) in the first year for each THB 1 million (USD33,000) taken out, tied with a special interest rate of 1% during the period. The campaign was offered until the end of December 2010. Outstanding mortgages were 11% percent of GDP in 2009, only a percentage point up from 2008. Strong baht, record-low inflation

Creamy Potato and Leek Soup

CHALLENGE RATE SCALE: 1/5 = easy and quick 2/5= simple 3/5= simple but takes effort/time 4/5= challenging 5/5=difficult and/or time consuming

If you have a copy of last month’s issue then I recommend making the Rosemary and Garlic Flatbread with this soup. This Creamy Potato and Leek Soup recipe is scrumptious, smooth, comforting, healthy and perfect for the cooler weather. Tip: Use organic ingredients where possible as it is tastier, better for our health and the earth. Each ingredient that I have labelled organic has previously been found in Hua Hin as organic. Biodynamic, unsprayed, chemical-free and wild-crafted, are also good choices.

Challenge Rate: 2/5 Serves 6-8 Method:

Ingredients: - 1.5kg potatoes - 400g leek, finely sliced - 2 medium carrots, roughly sliced - 2 sticks of celery, roughly sliced - 1 onion, chopped - 2 large cloves of garlic, crushed or finely chopped - Sea salt and black pepper to season - 1 vegetable stock-cube (optional) - 2 tbsp. butter or organic extra-virgin olive oil (or a tbsp. of each) - 3 tbsp. organic cream or yoghurt if desired

Peel, rinse and halve potatoes. Place potatoes into a large pot and cover with pre-boiled water. Stir in sea salt and black pepper to your likening. Stir in stock cube if using. Heat the potatoes. In a large pan, sauté the leek, carrots, celery, onion and garlic with butter and/or olive oil for at least 10 minutes with the lid askew until golden and softened. Once the potatoes have come to the boil and the vegetables are soft, add the vegetables to the pot with the potatoes and stir. Allow the soup to come to the boil before reducing the heat. Leave soup to simmer for at least 10 minutes or until you feel the vegetables are cooked through. With a stick blender, blend the soup until it is smooth and without lumps. If desired, add 3 tbsp. of cream or yoghurt and blend in. Serve soup warm, with homemade flatbread or serve cold with a squeeze of lime juice. Enjoy! Copyright © 2013 Zara Adcock
