EDITOR’S FOREWORD APPROACH PUBLISHING CO.LTD

Editor in Chief Gerard Mosselman General Manager Brigitte Persson

Took a few days off entrusting loyal team members to continue the good work. Looking at where to go my little daughter mentioned Pattaya and the multiple entertainment possibilities for children in the town and area. Not talking about the big children as these possibilities multiply considerably. Indeed Pattaya has got a tremendous scope of possibilities on hand. Not all of them are in the highest state of maintenance but still very interesting for young and old. To name a few: The Botanic Garden with international contributions over an area sf 120 Rai and ever increasing in size, all well-kept but spread over with sculptures of Giraffes , Pandas , Tigers , Birds, Tapirs and numerous other tropical and western world animals including polar bears and penguins. More in a separate story on Pattaya in this issue. There are parallels on traffic flow between Pattaya and Hua Hin and to get there at the Centara Mirage took us longer than thought. However arriving at the hotel was rewarding. Looking over the sea from our room I was reminded about the disastrous evacuation of our sea neighbours and the nonaction taking place to help these abused, slaved sea tribes without a solution in sight. As I am not allowed without consequences to publish the opinion of myself and my friends, all I have to say is that we should be ashamed to treat other human beings this way. Furthermore let us hope that tourism picks up and once more get Thailand to shine as a paradise heaven for those seeking rest and pleasure, deserving a good rest after a year trying to restart the European economy.

Yours Truly GMoss

The Wooden Palace of Hua Hin Hua Hin is famous for being the summer residences of the current and past Thai Kings. This in itself is one of the reasons that Hua Hin still today has greater restrictions on ‘entertainment’ venues. Instead, maintaining a family friendly atmosphere following the Thai traditions, thus making it a town most suitable for a quiet and safe beach holiday.

The Kings Palace in Hua Hin – Klaigungwon is now only accessible by invitation.

This wooden palace was designed by His Majesty King Rama VI in 1923 and is a superb example of classic raised Thai architechure. Of particular note are three two-storied wooden pavilions facing out to sea. Halls are linked together throughout the palace and there are residential areas for royal consort members and naturally for The Royal Family.

The residence of Rama VI to the north of Hua Hin, The Mrigadayavan,(Marukhathaiyawan) Palace, is open to the general public. Well worth a look as it boasts some impressive gardens and beach pagodas. It has now been

Local buses do ply the route between Cha Am and Hua Hin and will stop (on request) to set down or pick up passengers on the main Phetkasem Road, but you’ll need to cross the busy road and walk the remainder of the way (2km) to the army camp. You will go through an army checkpoint, but don’t worry because everybody has to! TRAVEL IN THAILAND

PATTAYA A switched on city loaded with fun Almost exactly 400 km from where we live in Hua Hin, crawling across the Gulf of Siam, one reaches Pattaya either per car, plane or Taxi. The name Pattaya evolved from the march of Phraya Tak (later King Taksin) and his army from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi, which took place before the fall of the former capital to Burmese invaders in 1767. When his army arrived in the vicinity of what is now Pattaya, Phraya Tak encountered the troops of a local leader named Nai Klom, who tried to intercept him. When the two met face to face, Nai Klom was impressed by Phraya Tak’s dignified manner and his army’s strict discipline. He surrendered without a fight and joined his forces. The place the armies confronted each other was thereafter known as “Thap Phraya”, which means the “army of the Phraya”. This later became Pattaya, the name of the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season, and of that we had plenty. 14

APPROACH June 2015

Although the famous walking street and it´s affiliated “establishments” didn´t exactly give Pattaya a sophisticated reputation among family tourists, we were to discover a different side of this glamourous town. First of all the town and its facilities are plentiful and several shopping malls remind us of Bangkok. The beaches are clean and the sidewalks along the Pattaya “boulevard” are fee of hawkers and other disturbing businesses. The municipality drives a hard bargain to keep it tidy. Littering is punished with hefty fines and this includes throwing away smoked cigarettes.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Pattaya was a small fishing village until the 1960s. Then, during the Vietnam War, American servicemen stationed at nearby U-Tapao or other US bases in Thailand began visiting Pattaya. One story, unverified by a reliable source, has it that it all started when a group of 500 American soldiers stationed at the military base in Korat were driven to Pattaya on 29 June 1959 for a week of rest and relaxation (R&R). They rented several houses at the south end of the beach from a prominent Thai, Lord Sunthorn. Despite their short stay, the GIs had a great time and raved about the place. The word spread among other American soldiers stationed in the region and Pattaya quickly became a hot alternative to Bangkok. Pattaya developed into a popular beach resort. Now greatly expanded, it attracts over 4 million visitors a year. Fishers’ huts along the beach were replaced by resort hotels and retail stores, including Asia’s largest beachfront shopping mall, the Central Festival Pattaya Beach Mall and hotel (Hilton) on Beach Rd in central Pattaya and the majestic Centara Mirage with it´s own waterpark focussed mainly on lodging families. Today Pattaya is making efforts to clean up its image to become a family-oriented seaside destination. There are plenty of things to do in Pattaya for young and old. Here a few to mention: Nong Nooch , the botanical garden with mini zoo, The Pattaya Elephant Village , Pattaya floating market , The Teddy Bear Museum and many more worthwhile attractions such as : The Flight of the Gibbon : Located in the protected rainforests of Chompoo Wildlife Sanctuary, this 3km zip line course allows you to experience life in the

Thai jungle canopy, rushing from tree to tree. The course is made up of a sequence of lines between 24 treetop platforms, one of which is over 300m long. There are also two hanging sky bridges and two rappel descents to add to the adventure. There is an educational aspect to the experience, too, as guides will show the fascinating and beautiful wildlife and plants along the route.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! contains over 300 exhibits which will boggle the mind. Telling only true stories and facts, the surprising and shocking displays prove that the truth really is stranger than fiction. Alongside this museum of the marvellous are several fun rides, a waxworks museum, a 12D Moving Theatre and the extremely popular Sky Rider – the yellow and white balloon which can be seen rising above Pattaya Beach, offering unique views of the city and the surrounding area. We stayed at the Centara Mirage which is a miracle in itself. With 540 rooms , a water park with a “lazy” river and in pool scuba diving school. Cultural shows, great rooms and super friendly staff. Pattaya is without doubt worth a visit. A visit to Pattaya is a wonderful way to explore the beaches along the Gulf of Thailand. Relaxed and familyfriendly Jomtien Beach is a hot spot for watersports and seaside massages. The giant Buddha of Wat Khao Phra Bat keeps watch over the city, and the wooden Wang Boran Sanctuary of Truth pays homage to Buddhist and Hindu art and architecture. At night, Pattay wakes up to entertain crowds of adults with endless bars, shows and strip clubs. June 2015 APPROACH

THAI NATURE

The Eucalyptus

By DR George Gross Niklaus

The eucalyptus (Eucalyptus), also known as blue gum trees, are a diverse plant genus in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). The more than 600 species are native to Australia and Indonesia. The genus name Eucalyptus is based on the hood-like closed calyx (the Calyptra) who hides during the bud stage, the “hidden” stamens and pistils; the name is a neologism from the Greek words eu εὖ, “beautiful, good” and καλυπτός kalyptos, “hidden”.

Habitus

Most Eucalyptus species are relatively fast growing, high, evergreen trees and shrubs (e.g. Eucalyptus vernicosa from western Tasmania) The giant eucalyptus (Eucalyptus regnans) is considered the deciduous tree with the greatest plant height; a specimen of this species was measured with a height of 97 meters and a trunk circumference of up to 20 meters in Tasmania. Eucalyptus regnans, known variously as mountain ash, swamp gum, or stringy gum, is the tallest species of flowering plant, and one of the tallest trees in the world, second to the coast redwood Sequoia sempervirens.

Bark and Rind

The appearance of the rind of eucalyptus trees varies throughout the ages. Like other trees, also Eukalyptus put every year a new layer of bark on, and so broaden their trunk extent. In some species, the outermost layer dies and clears in long strips (as in Eucalyptus sheathiana) or in different sized “flakes” (Eucalyptus diversicolor, Eucalyptus cosmophylla or Eucalyptus cladocalyx) from the tree. In many ways, however, the dead bark can simply remain on the tree. Due to weathering this bark gets her typical aging appearance. 30

Leaves

The youth leaves and the leaves on older trees differ markedly in most species (Heterophyllie). For example, the youth leaves are opposite - the adult leaves are alternate and often the adult leaves sickle-shaped or heart-ovate. Most leaves are leathery. The leaf blade is often rotated 90 degrees to provide less of a target for the high irradiation.

Fruits of Eucalyptus globulus

The umbels like and often composite inflorescences, often contain a lot of flowers. The hermaphrodite, radial symmetry flowers are fourfold. During the bud stage the flower is surrounded by a capsule called a, “operculum”, which consists mostly of the less obvious (usually 2 × 4) bloom claddings. Instead of striking bloom, the flowers contain a large number (20 to 150) long stamens, which in its color can be white, red or yellow, depending on the kind. Sometimes only a part of the stamens is fertile. The flower is not decorated with the bloom cladding sheets, but with the stamens. When the flower opens, the anthers are extended and the operculum is blasted. Pollination is by insects (Entomophilie) or birds (Ornithophilie).

Distribution

Eucalptus have their home in Australia, including Tasmania, and the eastern half of Indonesia. Today, however, some species grow well in many other subtropical areas of the world (e.g.Thailand). In Australia the tree accounts of 70% of total tree species. No other continent has such a strongly dominated genus by a single species of trees.

Cultivation

In several regions of the world, where eucalypts are not at home, eucalyptus are grown for their fast growth and good quality wood. Examples of such regions are Southern Europe and South Africa, South East Asia Thailand Utilization Eucalypts are both, for obtaining strong-smelling essential oils as well as for timber. They are the fodder plants of Koala and some other marsupial mammals, for most other animal and plant species they are poisonous and useless. The Koalas eat preferrably old leaves, where the toxins are not as concentrated as in the young shoots and leaves anymore.

Essential Eucalyptus oil

The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of leaves and branches. Eucalyptus globulus is a remedy according to the European Pharmacopoeia and is used against coughs, flu (influenza), hoarseness, in the form of Eucalyptus sweets (4 to 6 drops of eucalyptus oil (200 mg) on a lump of sugar) or by inhalation (20 drops) of vapors of a hot water bath with eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus leaf is used for infections, fever, upset stomach, and to help loosen coughs. The leaf is also used for treating respiratory tract infections, whooping cough, asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, osteoarthritis, joint pain (rheumatism), acne, wounds, poorly healing ulcers, burns, bacterial dysentery, ringworms, liver and gallbladder problems, loss of appetite, and cancer.

Eucalyptus oil should not be taken by mouth or applied to the skin full-strength. It must be diluted for safety. The diluted oil is taken by mouth for pain and swelling (inflammation) of respiratory tract mucous membranes, coughs, bronchitis, sinus pain and inflammation, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) , and respiratory infections. It is also used as an expectorant to loosen coughs, antiseptic, fever reducer, and in vaporizer fluids. Diluted eucalyptus oil is applied directly to the skin for pain and swelling of respiratory tract mucous membranes, joint pain, genital herpes, and nasal stuffiness. It is also used as an insect repellent. In dentistry, eucalyptus oil is included in products used as sealers and solvents for root canal fillings. In manufacturing, eucalyptus oil is used as a fragrance in perfumes and cosmetics. It is also used as a mouthwash, antiseptic, liniment and ointment, and in toothpaste, cough drops, and lozenges. Eucalyptus leaf contains chemicals that might help control blood sugar. It also contains chemicals that might have activity against bacteria and fungi. Eucalyptus oil contains chemicals that might help pain and inflammation. It might also block chemicals that cause asthma. June 2015 APPROACH

EUROPE GETTING A BIT TIRED OF THE FINANCIAL SCAMS Last week ended with positive news from Europe. The Greek government and the EU agreed to a four-month extension of the troika “bailout,” providing a temporary respite from the elevated levels of uncertainty attached to the possible expiration of the program. In effect, the IMF will be asked to assess what constitutes a judicious balance of financing and adjustment. Ultimately, they conclude that the imploding commodity bubble will lead to another financial crisis and sovereign defaults. Their “base case” scenario involves mostly European nations experiencing defaults. This looks not only likely, but probable. It is likely that the periphery of Europe will remain mired in recession for several years as austerity measures put downward pressure on their economies and the Euro governments fail to enact a true fix to the flawed single currency system. Persistent weakness in Greece and Ireland will cause continual political turmoil and ultimately the scenes of Egypt would not be surprising throughout many parts of Europe as citizens demand real change. The Euro would likely remain the primary European currency, however, several periphery nations would reconsider their involvement. Any regular reader knows that it is highly flawed analysis to conclude that the USA could potentially default on its obligations. A default of the USA is impossible. The only form of default could come through hyperinflation. Considering the deflationary collapse that would likely result

MONEY AFFAIRS

Inheritance and it´s Emotional Trauma Trust yourself to do the right thing. How many expatriates in Thailand will pass away this month and leave there family in a mess?

By Jerry Mcmenamin

Like many things in their lifetime procrastination was a bigger pull than action.

to Thailand. His daughter then 21 married a local man and stayed in Wales. His son David was already married with two small children and he had a good job as a policeman.

The result for the family after the emotional trauma is dealt with is total chaos and in the end large lawyers’ fees and more importantly for many the distribution of their estate the opposite of what the deceased would have wanted.

A year after arriving here John married a 30 year old local girl and they now have two sons aged 10 and 8 going to school in Bangkok. John had sold his successful business for a substantial sum and he will never need to work again.

Many elderly Foreigners living in Hua Hin have young Thai children here and adult children back in Europe. Usually their much younger Thai wife or partner is ill equipped to handle large amounts of money based offshore and even less equipped to handle foreign snake oil lawyers.

He has placed the bulk of his estate in “The John Diver Family trust” and wrote a letter of wishes to the professional trustees instructing them to pay on his demise large lump sums to his British children. He has also requested a monthly income for himself.

So how can you prevent this trauma for all your family? A few rich Foreigners are afraid to face up to their mortality long before their younger wife and thus, do nothing. Responsible mostly males can arrange a family trust which will prevent total chaos after their demise and even prevent the taxman following them into the grave. Let’s look at an example: John Diver is a 68 year old Welshman. His first wife died 15 years ago after which he retired and moved

He has stipulated that his Thai wife receives payment every month from his substantial pension and that in 25 years’ time his Thai children each receive further substantial sums. No one can challenge the trust and John’s plan will be adhered to. John is a good example of someone who faced up to his own mortality and made sure that when the time comes he will rest in peace. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Fast Food & Obesity in Kids Nutrition , Fitness and Appearance are the Answers Health experts have been saying for years that fast food is bad for people. In February 2003, a filmmaker named Morgan Spurlock decided to perform an experiment to see if that claim was true. He wanted to find out what would happen to his body if he ate nothing but fast food for thirty days.

certain. Thai youth are eating more fast food than they used to eat. And, according to the statistics, the are fatter and unhealthier, than they were a few decades ago.

The Obesity Epidemic

Every single day, one out of three young people aged four to nineteen eats fast food. Children eat five times more fast food today than they did in 1970, as reported in a 2004 study published in Pediatrics. Every single day, one out of three young people aged four to nineteen eats fast food. Fast food is not limited to the famous American Food chains but also to Thai street hawkers. Pancakes , Deep fried battered chicken is no different from Mc Donald or Burger King. In addition soda drinks with a lot of sugar ad to the already sugared Thai food, filled with sugared syrups, MSG and oily deep-fries.

He ate every breakfast, lunch, and dinner at a fast food restaurant. He gained 25 pounds in a short time. What happened to Morgan Spurlock’s body doesn’t prove that fast food is unhealthy. But two things are 42

Being overweight can lead to many health problems, such as type 2 diabetes. People who have type 2 diabetes cannot utilize the hormone insulin, which

helps the body’s cells convert the sugar from foods into energy. When you are overweight, your body has more trouble using insulin. There is also type 1 diabetes, which is caused by a problem with the immune system that damages the cells that make insulin. However, type 1 diabetes is not related to being overweight. Before 1994, only about 5 percent of children with diabetes had the type 2 kind. But because there are more overweight kids today, 30 to 50 percent of children with diabetes have the type 2 kind, according to the National Diabetes Education Program. Why do young people seem to be heavier— and unhealthier—than ever before? One reason is that they’re not moving as much as they used to. They get a ride to school instead of walking. They play video games instead of sports. They also don’t get as much exercise in school. In 1991, almost half of U.S. students took physical education class in school every day. In 2003, only 28 percent took daily gym

classes, according to the CDC. There’s also the lure of television. The CDC says that young people between the ages of eight and eighteen sit in front of the TV for more than three hours each day. That’s time they could have spent playing or exercising. Watching television is not only making children gain weight, it’s also making them want to eat foods that aren’t good for them.

they try to get your attention with clowns and fun characters from your favourite movies and TV shows. They make the burgers, fries, shakes, and other foods that they sell look delicious. Ads aren’t the only way fast-food restaurants try to get your attention. Many of them have playgrounds. They have special meals for children, and they put toys in their kids’ meals from movies such as SpiderMan 2 and Shrek. They do these things to get you to buy their food.

Getting the Balance Right

It’s hard to resist fast-food restaurants. all, the food tastes good. The meals don’t cost much. Your friends probably go there to eat and ask you to come along. It’s easy to go to fast-food restaurants because they’re everywhere. You can find them in school cafeterias, airports, malls, and hospitals—just about anyplace you look. Eating fast food is OK once in a while. If you make healthy choices at fast-food restaurants, like ordering salads with low-fat dressing or deli sandwiches instead of burgers, you can eat there more often without a problem. Remember that your body needs many different types of foods to stay healthy. You need to eat fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, lean meats, milk products, and grains. If you eat fast-food burgers, fries, and shakes every day, you won’t be getting the proper nutritional balance. You may end up with a lot of extra weight and health problems.

Selling Fast Food to You

If you’re like most young people, you watch a whopping forty thousand TV commercials per year, according to The Handbook of Children and Media. Most of those ads are for toys, cereals, candy, and fast food. Fast-food restaurants spend millions of dollars a year on their commercials. In the ads, June 2015 APPROACH

ALL ABOUT FUELS It is a bit confusing on the fuel market. What to tank ? Most Petrol companies offer Gasohol 95 – Gasohol 91 – E10 - E20 –E85 - HSD Diesel – BioDiesel – LPG AUTO and CNG

To start off with : Older car engines with a high compression engine such as several BMW , Porsche , Mercedes models require a high octane (95) petrol (gasoline.

LPG - Liquefied Petroleum Gas

More modern issues from most of the Japanese manufacturers will do with Gasohol 91

Higher running cost - less fuel efficient

Even further advanced engine designs will allow E10 – Gasoline with a 10% Ethanol or E20 with a 20% ethanol by volume. This means there is a 10% volume in 1 litre of petrol/ gasoline of ethanol. HSD DIESEL – contains a 0.05% sulphur content to boost the energy of the fuel supply. BioDiesel will carry a 5% Bio – Diesel ( plant Oil) by volume Some engines cannot process Ethanol containg fuels as it will react aggressive towards the synthetic material or rubbers used in the fuel and fuel injection systems. This can however be adapted by a service workshop by changing the materials. However : Ethanol fuels use more fuel quantities driving the same distance. In other words : If your fuel consumption on a 100 km is on average 8 or 7 litres, with Ethanol E20 you will use more which will compensate for the less price you paid for E20 as you are using up to 8% more fuel for the same distance! Also E20 is more environmental friendly, the higher fuel consumption also compensates for it here. Last but not least, there is a minor loss in performance.

Motorcycle Helmets with Bluetooth technology Using the same Bluetooth technology, helmets can communicate as well. In the old days, if you wanted to talk to your pillion passenger, either you shouted, or you carried an intercom that consisted of bits of wire, either connecting the rider with the pillion, or via a central hub mounted to the motorcycle. Fitting the Bluetooth kit on your helmet shouldn’t take too long, since most kits have stick on, or screw on mounts (not permanent). Once fitted, you need to introduce the Bluetooth gear to each other (called “pairing”). The only downside is that you need to use the same manufacturer’s gear, you can’t mix & match. Not all units can communicate with all sorts of devices, you need to check carefully. Motorcycle GPSs like Garmin Zumo and TomTom Rider are equipped with Bluetooth, but have in the past proven unreliable with communication links dropping. Always make sure that you have the latest firmware installed in your GPS if you want to use it with your Bluetooth communicator. No Price.

The Road Tech Zumo Harley-Davidson riders can now benefit of a new portable GPS made by Garmin. The new release is called the Road Tech Zumo and its main targets are the Harley-Davidson dealerships, as part of the American maker’s motorcycle accessories line-up. Being a limited edition product, it sounds very promising and it actually is. Because it will fit Harley-Davidson motorcycles - it comes with handlebar mount and support on Harley-Davidson.com - it will feature all the dealership locations preloaded on it. What is interesting and makes the zumo more useful is the fact that it has an SD card slot, allowing other zumo users to share trip information, just like truck drivers. But it can also be fun. Because it has XM satellite radio hardware, it can be accessed for getting weather information and listen to music. You can also get TMC traffic alerts in cities that support it, and if now you can still use the sports programming function to relax. With a price tag of nearly $800 (THB 24,000), this will surely become a major point of interest

SPORT

TAKRAW - THAI SOCCER Sepak Takraw or kick volleyball is a sport native to Southeast Asia, resembling volleyball, except that it uses a rattan ball and only allows players to use their feet and head to touch the ball. A cross between football and volleyball, it is a popular sport in Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, Philippines and Indonesia. In Thailand, the game is simply called takraw. It is also thuck thay (Lao: “twine” and “kick”) while in Malaysia it is sometimes called sepak raga. Put your cornhole and ladder ball sets away this summer and try something new like Sepak Takraw, Thailand’s blend of soccer and volleyball. The sport played with a net and woven plastic ball is more than anything a display of acrobatics

RULES Most of the same rules apply as for volley ball, with the following main exceptions: - players are prohibited from using their hands & arms - a player can touch the ball up to 3 times consecutively - the players’ positions on the court need not be rotated - net serves (falling within the boundary) are accepted

and unreal leg strength. The objective: score points as you would in volleyball by getting the ball to hit the ground on the other team’s side of the net. A team consisting of 3 members is called a “Regu”. Two regus compete for higher scores by spiking a ball into the opponent’s court. A match is composed of 3 sets. The first regu to score 21 points wins a set. The first regu winning two sets wins the match. In either set, if both regus are tied, 20 - 20, play continues until one regu wins by 2 points, up to a ceiling of 25 points. If each regu wins one set out of the first two, then the third set is played and is called the “Tiebreak”. The Tiebreak only goes up to 15 points, but again a regu must win by 2 points, up to a ceiling of 17. Many who see Sepak Takraw being played, or try it themselves, for the first time often make comments like, “This is the most amazing sport!”, “Did you see that?!”, “Takraw rocks, I’m in!”, “This is great for improving soccer skills!”, etc. June 2015 APPROACH

FOOD REVIEW

YouYen Garden’s Beach Restaurant

Grace’s American Burgers and Grill & Two Hua Hin Food institutions have found a new location behind the Boathouse Condo right afterthe Airport tunnel. These two restaurants used to operate together on Naebkehardt road. You Yen was famous for it’s traditional Thai food and Grace´s for their authentic American food. Now both of them have a new location with still the same great food and an amazing venue to serve it in: The YouYen compound houses, the Thai and the American Restaurant, but also a beautiful cafe. The venue sits on the edge of the sea with old style Thai houses in white and large open areas to chillax or let your children play.

This is the first time I have done a “double food review” and tasting food from two restaurants at the same time is a great way to cater to all tastes. This is a great thing for clients and suitable for families and groups of friends. I had never actually tried either restaurants before but I heard of Grace’s authentic burgers and that You Yen’s is popular with the hip Thai crowd for their food and ambience. The YouYen part of the Food review started off with a starter called Mieng Kham, meaning “eating many things in one bite”. The dish is refreshing and lovely served. You are given wild betel leaves to wrap dried noodles, shredded coconut, toasted peanuts, lime,

made with Wagyu beef that was as good as all the hype I had heard of it. This is the place to come if you are craving burgers and want the real deal. Next came the New Orleans Cajun shrimp burger served on hot pretzel bread. Apparently the pretzel bread is the new thing in burgers in the US, they are not hard, as I would have imagined but crisp on the outside and soft on the inside with a delicious filling of the Cajun shrimps. Only Americans know how to come up with recipes that make burgers like this! dried shrimp and bird’s eye chilli among others. This starter is delicious and I would just come here for this as now I not only know there is such a dish but also know how to eat it. Next came the stir fried prawn garlic and grilled scallops with butter and garlic. The stir fried prawns are served in a delicious sauce and the prawns are fresh. But it’s the scallops served in butter and garlic that are the real stars and I have to venture say, these are the best ones I ever had! The dish was deep fried fish with lemongrass which is crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. The lemongrass adds a nice touch as a garnish and also gives a fragrant taste. My food review for Grace’s started with what was to become my absolute favourite. The Buffalo chicken dip is served with corn chips, carrots and celery and is made of chicken and cheese. It is one of these things that tastes better than anything you can imagine. The next dishes were the BBQ Ribs that Grace’s makes from the owner’s special home recipe. This is how ribs should taste succulent and melting in your mouth. As I was eating, guests that walked past asked me what I had ordered as they wanted the same, that should tell you how good it looks in real life. Next I finally got to taste the famous Grace’s burgers starting of with classic bacon cheeseburger

To finish the evening of we had some excellent latte and one slice each of chunk caramel cheese pie and Young coconut cake. At this point I thought I might have to be carried to the car but even so I am still thinking of my 3 star favourites the to die for Scallops in butter and garlic, those burgers and that damn Buffalo chicken dip that is soo addictive! Try it! And don’t say I didn’t warn you, you will be covered in cheese dip! YouYen Garden Beach Restaurant & Grace’s American Burgers and Grill Address: 1417/4 PetchKasem Road Tel No: 032 653 015

How to have amazing skin in hot and humid places. Keeping your skin healthy and beautiful in the tropics Protecting your skin from sun damage is essential, not just to protect from skin cancer but also from premature aging. Hats, sunglasses, long sleeved and loose fitting clothing all make a big difference when combined with adequate sunscreen protection.

Leaving this there will cause the pores to stretch out and enlarge. The cleaner they are, the more minimal their appearance will become over time. Depending on the condition of your skin, now is the time to relax for about 20 minutes with a hydrating, toning, firming, refreshing or clarifying mask. Apply a nutrient rich serum to your face and neck using a specially designed eye gel for the delicate skin around your eye area. Finish off with a light application of moisturizer to the face, neck and décolletage area.

Having beautiful skin in tropical climates isn’t that hard really, but it is about being consistent. Whilst makeup can also be more challenging when it is humid, having the right foundation makes all the difference. Keeping your skin clean isn’t just a simple matter of a quick wash with water each morning. Thorough cleansing is required on a regular basis to prevent clogged pores and dull, uneven skin tone. Here is a suggested routine. Clean your face from all traces of makeup using makeup remover, skin cleanser and a fresh face skin washer.

Cleanse the skin using a creamy cleanser (if you have dryer or more mature skin) or a foaming cleanser (if you have younger, oily or prone to break out skin). Apply this with the tips of your fingers and massage it well to remove all traces of oils that have settled on your face over night. Remove the cleanser with a warm, damp face cloth. For some skin types, using a toner is optional, but given that most of us have trouble with our skin becoming oily in humid weather. Even if you have oil skin, you still need to feed it. A light application of a serum suited to your skin type will help restore its elasticity.

Exfoliate using a gentle, beaded gommage product.

If you’re over 20 you should be using an Eye Cream every day. Your general face moisturizer isn’t suitable for the delicate eye area and can lead to more pronounced lines.

Use pore strips on the forehead, nose and chin to help remove build up sebum inside the pores.

A lightweight, day time moisturiser should be applied over the whole face, neck and décolletage.

APPROACH June 2015

Always, always wear high protection factor sunscreen regardless of your skin tone. Use oil free products specifically formulated for the face. If you have pale skin or like to appear paler in images, use a sunscreen that has light reflecting Titanium Dioxide. If not, seek out products without this active ingredient. Hot and humid weather will quickly remove moisture from your skin as it evaporates. In these climates the amount lost can be up to triple the average of 2litres per day. So drink up! Make sure that you are replenishing both the water and the essential salts in your system but including isotonic drinks occasionally. Eat foods that have a high water content to help you keep up your hydration without getting bored. Watermelon, Rock melon, Strawberries, Honey dew melon Broccoli; all these fruits and green vegetables are fantastic for a light, healthy and hydrating snack.

FASHION

The Beach Sarong A Versatile Beach and Travel Companion Sarongs are a must-have fashion staple when living or traveling to tropical This colorful, rectangular piece of dyed fabric can be worn a number of ways, making it incredibly versatile and a flashy and flattering option for any look or occasion. It can be worn as a dress, a skirt, a halter top, and more. Able to transform itself into an accessory or talking piece for any outfit, a sarong is the perfect addition to a fashionable traveler’s suitcase.

Above are just six of the ways it’s possible to wear this garment and instructions for how to tie it. Strapless Dress This dress is one of the more common ways of wearing a sarong. Holding the fabric length-wise, wrap the sarong from one side of your body to the other. Pull the top corners together tightly and tie or tuck them into the top edge of the dress. Off-the-Shoulder Dress A cool and sporty option for the beach or rooftop bar. Starting with the long side of the fabric held parallel with your arm span, place one top corner at the middle of your back and wrap the sarong around

until your body is fully covered. Bring the remaining fabric to the front and pull the top corner over your far shoulder to tie with the corner in the center of your back. Billow Shorts These colorful shorts are comfy and easy to wear. Take two corners of the sarong so that the fabric is held out in front of you with the longer side parallel to your arm span. Then, wrap the top corners behind you to meet at the small of your back. Take the remaining fabric and pull it front to back between your legs, and tuck or tie it into the waist. Mini Skirt This cute and flirty mini skirt is perfect as a cover up over a swimsuit or paired with a tank top for a day on the boardwalk. Gather the corners of each short side together and wrap the fabric in one hand fully around your body until you are covered on all sides. Then, tie both bunches together in a knot or twist. Modern Toga Old-world technique meets new-age chic! Once again, hold the top corners of your sarong horizontally along your arm span. From behind, bring your arms and the fabric forward under your armpits to the front. Tightly pull one side under the opposite arm, and take the other corner over the opposite shoulder to form the sleeve. Pull the two corners together and tie in a knot. Elegant Shawl or Shoulder Wrap This shoulder wrap is the perfect sunny accessory for a sundress. First, fold the sarong in half diagonally so that the corners meet. Next, drape it over your shoulders. You can either tie the knot at your sternum for a classic shawl look, or move the knot to your shoulder for a fashionable asymmetrical look. June 2015 APPROACH

Scrubs can be chosen according to your skins needs but also according to your preferences to the type of products used and the fragrance they contain. For massages the Spa uses the innovative blood type oils, you can choose an essential oil according to your blood type or even to match your mood if not sure of your blood type. The lovely Spa manager Khun Meena at The Spa Villa let me test their promotion package of a 50 minute Body Scrub & a 60 minute Aromatherapy Massage costing an affordable THB 2000. During the initial consultation it was determined that with a dry skin they would use a scrub made out of Jasmine rice that gently exfoliates skin while rice milk and rice bran oil that are hydrates. The scrub smells good enough to eat and seem to be made fresh at the Spa. For my massage oil it was determined that with me on the go character I should have Relaxing Massage Oil suitable for B and AB blood types, the oil contains Green tea, Ginseng and grape seed oil and essential oil from Lavender, Neroli and Ylang Ylang, smelling delicious. The rooms at the Spa are comfortable and spacious with your own private amenities to change. My therapist was lovely Khun Bibbi who started the treatment off by applying the moisturizing scrub to remove dead skin. The application of the scrub is cleverly massaged in, so for this package you are really getting two massages in one. After the application of the Scrub you are required to take a shower and return for your massage smelling like a Thai

dessert with soft and glowing skin. I love massages and I seldom have a bad one in Thailand but Khun Bibbi gets my top rated award as a therapist. Her techniques of massaging may follow a set routine, but her hands are genius. You can feel the difference as soon as she starts, she uses a firm but gentle massage stroke and managed to alleviate my sore neck and put me to sleep in no time. As a matter of fact I was a bit irritated to realize the massage had ended as I was in such a deep sleep. SONG OF THE SEA

(PG) 2014

Saoirse feels neglected; her mother died giving birth to her, and her father hasn’t emerged from his grief since. Meanwhile, Saoirse’s older brother Ben (also mourning their mother and comforting himself with her faery stories) resents his duty to look after Saoirse and gives all his affection for his loyal dog Cu. On Saoirse’s sixth birthday she finds a coat that allows her true nature to reveal itself – she is a selkie, a girl that can become a seal – and their life is turned upside down all over again. In an attempt to protect them, their grandmother takes them to her home in the city, but it is too late: Saoirse is no longer invisible to Ireland’s magical folk, and she and Ben must venture through the most wondrous and whimsical of Celtic myths in order to save the faery people from certain doom.

BY FRANCES HARDINGE Macmillan Children’s Books, 2012, paperback, Bookommended Price: 690 Baht In Caverna, an underground city – where cheeses that show the future and perfumes that tamper with judgement are crafted – facial expressions do not come naturally but must be taught by the Facesmiths. Neverfell is the exception – a girl with no memory of her past, and a face so terrible and extraordinary that, when company calls, she must wear a mask to hide it or risk revealing her every emotion, and her dangerous inability to lie. Unaware that her master Grandible, creator of fine cheeses, has been protecting her secret by keeping her confined to his caves, Neverfell jumps at the chance to explore beyond his tunnels when she finds a boarded up passageway leading out. No sooner than she has escaped does the naïve Neverfell become tangled in a deadly web of plots, secrets, and conspiracies. As her life passes through the hands of eloquent wine makers, a seemingly friendly Facesmith, and the virtually immortal emperor of Caverna, Neverfell is exposed to the mysteries, cruelties and imperfections of the world she inhabits, and must discern truth from lies, and friends from enemies, if she is to find out where she belongs, and change Caverna irrevocably. Although this dystopian world can be dark at times, Neverfell’s innocent outlook does not allow it to stoop to bleak; one of the many details that makes this fantastic below-the-surface novel so distinctive. The storyteller’s rich language may discourage more reluctant readers, but those who do immerse themselves into the delight and deceit that surrounds the daring and darling Neverfell, will be well rewarded. From the author of Fly By Night comes yet another unforgettable masterpiece that twists and turns in unexpected and maddeningly brilliant ways, until the much awaited and beautifully composed conclusion. 74

APPROACH June 2015

Seamlessly flowing frames of breathtakingly beautiful animation brings this delicate story of finding yourself and sibling bond to life. Brimming with positive messages and heart, the only objectionable content parents may like to be aware of is this film’s tenderly handled theme of adults making bad choices out of love and sorrow, including a brief picture of Ben and Saoirse’s moody father cradling a beer in a pub. Audiences younger than 6 may find Macha – who turns her victims to stone and literally bottles up their emotions – a little frightening but, like all the characters in this story, she redeems herself. An enchanting, fully-formed tale of one young girl’s journey to fulfil her destiny, and her brother’s quest to save her.

The Giant Bookworm Part Fourteen Amelia

The Story So Far: United by their love for books, Sal Tangit (the last giant living) and the orphan girl Amelia have formed an unlikely friendship. But thanks to the surprise arrival of her Aunt June, Amelia has learnt her father’s will was misread. Amelia wasn’t meant to live in Reckwood, but Beekwood, where her Aunty resides and her father grew up. Now Amelia has to decide, will she take the path chosen for her, or choose her own?

I

fell asleep in Sal’s hand as he carried me back to Reckwood. When I woke the next day, it was past dawn and I was curled up on a chair in the orphanage’s parlour, alone. My gaze darted about the room as what happened the day before came back to me and the thought that had been riddling my dreams boomed inside my head: Which story do I belong in? I moved to the window and saw Sal sitting outside, looking over the village farms in the broadening sunshine. As I watched, June went to his side and struck up conversation. I couldn’t hear what was said, but I could see each wore a gentle smile. Which story? I focused on Sal. The Last Giant in a realm of seven hundred and twelve human villages. A collector of books who couldn’t read. A kindred soul viewed as a beast by those who didn’t know him. It seemed impossible that I could fit into his world, and yet these past few weeks, I’d done exactly that. I turned to June and saw all I had ever hoped for: a home, a relative, normalcy. Living with June was what my parents had wanted for me, what would they think of me becoming a giant’s librarian? So which story? My mind pressed, and my teeth started chattering. Maybe Ma and Pa didn’t intend for me to live in Reckwood, but nor did they intend to make me an orphan at eleven years either, my heart cried back. I looked down at the floor. The problem was, no matter what I decided, someone would get left behind. * I washed my face, smoothed my skirts, and patted down my frizzy bed hair. With nothing more to be done, I joined my family outside. Cautiously, they watched me approach. “Good morning,” I said, not meeting their eyes. They blurted out good mornings of their own. Then at once, Sal asked if I was alright, and June, how I slept. “I’m okay,” I said. I could feel them waiting. It was time. “Aunt

June, thank you so much for finding me,” “You’re welcome Amelia,” June murmured. “I’m sorry, I can’t got to Beekwood with you. My home is here with Sal,” I met Sal’s shining blue eyes and smiled. When I turned back to June, her eyes were on the dirt. “I’m sorry you came all this way, but I hope you’ll stay a bit, I would like to get to know you better. I’m so sorry,” I knew I’d made the right choice, but the unfairness of it all hurt. “Well that decides it then,” said June. She raised her head. “Amelia, there is no need to apologise,” And then, in a voice almost soft enough to be a whisper she told me, “You remind me so much of your parents. I think…I think they’d understand,” A tear pricked the corner of my eye as she continued in a normal tone, “I never had children of my own and now I am a widow. There is not that much left for me in Beekwood,” June sighed. “I am a sensible woman, but…I can’t shake the feeling that I wasn’t supposed to bring you to Beekwood – you were supposed to bring me here. You know the first thing I thought, when I arrived here? That Reckwood must be on the edge of civilisation,” I hid a smile, there was no way June could know that I’d thought something very similar when I first reached Reckwood. “But all these orphans in need…If it’s alright with you, I’d like to stay here and take care of these children, keep Madame Cole in line, maybe teach her a thing or two. You can live with Sal, and we wouldn’t always be together but we’d never be a part,” June gulped, and pink filled her cheeks. Instinctively I glanced at Sal and he gave me a small blink, like a nod with eyelids. I agreed. June had so much love to give, and the orphans deserved someone like her, maybe more than I did. I met June’s eyes, “Stay.” I said. She pulled me into a tight hug. I was wrong, I realised, the question wasn’t ‘which story’, it wasn’t even ‘which ending’, it was simply, ‘what next’. “What about the warriors?” I remembered aloud. “We’ll deal with them when they come.” Said June and Sal together and smiled. One thing was for sure, the Reckwood the warriors were expecting would no longer be here when they arrived. This village was going to be very different place from now on, and so was I.
