G George Gershwin was not in Thailand when he wrote “summertime”. As temperatures rose to above 38°C as early as 10:00 in the morning, you wonder how it is going to be midsummer. The expected rain will surely cool us off a bit. Even in Europe temps around 20°C were recorded in my home land. I wish the Euro would heat up as much as our outside temp. Actually it is a disgrace, the exchange rate of both the pound and the Euro whilst the US is printing money claiming their economy is on the rise. How can exports be on the rise when imports of China overshadow the exports? Anyway let me leave this to the experts, no, not the ones at the US Fed or Goldman & Sachs or how they are all called. Our international manipulators. So Miss Hillary is up for the presidency of the US. A capable woman, intelligent, good looking and well spoken. However will she be another victim of the back-up government firms…no names please? I always really wonder…why would you want to be the president of a country where you are expected to jump like a puppet on a string? Songkran had it in it. Never before did we have more visitors in Hua Hin as this time. A looong weekend and totally clogged streets with funny traffic regulators (fences) to prevent the cues from flowing normally. I still think the old solution with the broad yellow space in the middle of the road was the best solution. Finish the Klong road all the way from beyond Palm Springs to end into either Petschkasem or Bypass Highway. This would alleviate the passing through traffic enormously and avoid a lot of U-turn accidents as no one respects or follows the U –turn lanes. In our so called low season which I prefer to call spring season, there are quite some good opportunities to purchase real estate at slightly adjusted prices. There is plenty of different real estate available in Hua Hin and by taking a look at the “White List”, your trustful agent is ready to give you the best information on your dreams. The real estate agents on the white list work together and provide exact information on property laws and purchasing plans, may it be through a cash deal, creating a company or leasing the object. Hua Hin was, is and will remain the pearl on the Gulf of Siam, our dreamy little Royal town, but growing and growing fast! Yours Truly GMoss

THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE The Golden Triangle and the Hill tribes in the North of Thailand The term “Golden Triangle” refers to the border regions between Thailand, Burma and Laos and when gold was used by Chinese traders to pay for opium grown there.

Within Southeast Asia the term is synonymous with the opium and heroin trade. The history of the opium poppy in the Golden Triangle can be traced back to various Chinese migrant groups for whom the poppy was an integral part of their cultural traditions. Elderly people regarded opium, and still do, as an acceptable natural stimulant. The Hmong tribe have always produced opium for trade, at first it was intended for the Chinese market, but later the French colonists bought large amounts during their reign in Indochina. After Mao Zedong’s Communist Army defeated and ousted Chiang Kai-Sheks National Revolutionary Army, many of these Chinese Kuomintangs came to the Thai-Burmese border region looking for ways to make money. They decided to make their living in the drug trade and dramatically increased opium production. Southeast Asia’s role in the production of opium sharply increased when poppy field plantations in Iran and China were prohibited in the 1950’s. The Golden triangle became renown for opium and heroin production during the Vietnam War. On one hand there was a huge, ever increasing market for narcotics while on the other hand money from the drug APPROACH

May 2015

trade was used by the CIA to fund allied armies secret missions and secret wars in Laos. The production of narcotics actually increased at the end of the Vietnam War up to the end of the 80’s. One reason for this was an ever increasing demand in The West. The governments in the “Golden Triangle” have dealt with the problem of poppy production with differing levels of intensity. In Thailand the cultivation of poppies is illegal and in the Northern provinces they have been very effective in limiting cultivation. Northern Thailand has many new roads and airports which make it easier for the police and military to control and patrol the region effectively. In Laos the locals still use opium pipes because the country is very poor. The government is trying to promote its tourism industry and has had some successes in this area. In the hotels, restaurants, trekking and tour agencies tourists can get information about making contact with hill tribes. One of the main rules which they are strict about is that under no circumstances should tourists smoke opium. The on-going efforts to prohibit opium in neighbouring countries has caused Myanmar to become the biggest producer of opium in the Golden Triangle. 14

fertile altitudes which are owned by the Thai people. This means that the smaller ‘tribes’ and ‘nomadic people’, have had to settle for land hard t to reach and areas difficult to cultivate crops in the mountainous regions. This is why these groups are called ‘the hill tribes’. At present there are approximately one million of people from the following ethnic groups; Akha, Karen, Lahu, Shan, Lawa or wha, Yaoh or Mien, Mlabri, Hmong, Lisou, Palaung, Htin and Kamu as well as the oldest tribal group within Thailand the Mon. These nomadic groups that travelled through East Asia have their own language as well as their own unique culture. Their original homelands are as varied as their customs and dress. The majority are animistic while some have recently converted to Christianity and Buddhism. As nomads they lived from hunting, gathering, and small slash- burn cultivation. They erected stilt like houses using bamboo and when these houses fell apart they simply moved on. The jungle regenerated itself and they were an integral part of the environment. When the Thai population expanded they made contact with the hill tribes and this signalled an end to their subsistence lifestyle. The strong increase in population among the hill tribes also meant that more jungle had to be sacrificed in order to produce food. In the 20th century the opium fields were a good alternative to generate income, but the subsequent ban 20 years ago meant that opium is no longer an option. The “Thai way of life” has assimilated western culture resulting in an identify loss for many of the different ethnic groups.

The Gold of the Golden Triangle is a natural beauty, the inspiring naturall lifestyles of the people and the fairyairytale temples glittering in the tropical sunlight. But for many tourists, a trip to Northern Thailand isn’t complete until you’ve visited a one of the “Hill tribes”.

Years ago the tourism industry discovered the appeal the mountain tribe groups had for tourists and senselessly marketed them. The consequences have been horrendous to say the least. The tribe people are forced to stay in villages quite reminiscent of a zoo where tourists come and take snap-shots. If you look closely at these people you can see their confusion, fear and hopelessness. As saying goes, it’s the richest or the most powerful who get the best fields. These fields are situated at the 15

FINLAND – GETTING TOUGH ON THE GREEKS ? HOW SLEEPY FINLAND COULD TEAR APART THE EURO PROJECT

Europe’s biggest cheerleader for austerity is heading to the polls, and its stance on Greece threatens to catalyse a break-up of the union Finland’s stricken economy has been strangled by the euro just as much as Greece

Finland is the unlikely stage for the latest turn in Greece’s interminable debt drama this weekend. With events having decamped temporarily to Washington DC, Athens will be keeping half an eye on developments in Helsinki, where the Nordic state of just 5.4m people heads for the polls on Sunday. In the five years since Greece’s financial woes were revealed to the world, it has been sleepy Finland which has emerged as the most trenchant critic of EU largesse to the indebted Mediterranean. The outcome of the country’s general election could now determine Greece’s future in the monetary union . Getting tough on the Greeks: In a leaked memo seen last month, it was revealed that the Finns had already drawn up contingency plans for a Greek exit from the euro. Although ostensibly a sensible measure for any finance ministry to contemplate, the document confirmed the Finns’ position as the most uncompromising of the EU’s creditor nations. At the height of Greece’s bail-out drama in 2011, Helsinki negotiated an unprecedented bilateral agreement with Athens, receiving €1bn in collateral in return for supporting a rescue deal. APPROACH

May 2015

A year later, the Finns were prime candidates to become the first dissenters to voluntarily break the sanctity of monetary union. “We have to be prepared,” the country’s then foreign minister told the Telegraph three years ago. Greece’s current impasse is also partly a result of Finnish obstinacy. Helsinki was one of the main obstacles to securing a longer extension to Greece’s bail-out late last year. The eventual compromise of a three-month, rather than sixmonth reprieve, has seen the new Leftist regime scramble desperately for cash since February. With the situation in Athens deteriorating by the day, both Finland’s prime minister and central bank governor have eschewed high-minded rhetoric about European unity, to insist creditors should be ready to pull the plug on Greece. But unlike its fellow creditor giant Germany, Finland is more economic laggard than European powerhouse. Stagnating growth saw the country stripped of its much coveted Triple-A sovereign debt rating last year. The International Monetary Fund now recommends a cocktail of structural reforms and fiscal consolidation that would make officials in Athens bristle. 30

“There is no sympathy for Greece any more, especially because our own economy is struggling,” says Jan von Gerich, strategist at Nordea bank in Helsinki. “If there was a referendum on a bailout deal tomorrow, it would fail.” Much like its fellow northern counterparts, Finland has also fallen into a demographic trap. It is now the fastest ageing country in the world, topping Japan in the race to get old. Weak productivity and an ageing population, all trapped in the strictures of a monetary union, make Finland a microcosm for much of Europe’s future economic woes, says Karl Whelan, a professor of Economics at University College Dublin. “The future for growth in Europe appears to be Finnish” The euro has also robbed the economy of the freedom to devalue its currency - the tried and tested instrument the Finns have used to extricate themselves from the midsts of their deepest depressions. But faced with political and economic crisis in neighbouring giant Russia, the country’s current and likely outgoing premier Alexander Stubb, has bemoaned a “lost decade” under

the monetary union.

Blocking another bail-out

could be put the test very quickly when the new parliament gathers at the end of the month. They might have something to vote on very soon.” Any insistence on another preferential 2011-style deal from the Finns could cause another major political schism in Europe. But the nature of the rescue mechanisms still gives disproportionate veto power to individual member states, says Mr von Gerich. “Even the European Stability Mechanism needs unanimity among all member states unless there are really exceptional circumstances,” he says. The only saving grace for the prospect of another political meltdown in the Eurozone, is that Athens shows no signs of completing its existing bail-out, let alone agreeing a new deal. This is all for the day after tomorrow. The task at hand is still to get Greece through to June, before anything else can be negotiated.”

The run-up to its last elections saw the unprecedented rise of the eurosceptic True Finns, who were ostracised from the coalition-making process for their fierce resistance to Greek aid. This time round, the party - which has been re-branded as just The Finns - has taken a more subdued approach. Their charismatic leader Timo Soini has refused to categorically state whether or not he would block a new debt deal in a bid to make the Finns more palatable to any future coalition partner. Unprecedented among left-leaning parties in Europe however, Finland’s Social Democrats now lead the charge against a third Greek bail-out. And should Greece need a third bail-out this summer, as the parlous state of its coffers suggests, then the Finns stand ready to throw sand in the wheels of a fresh agreement, says Moritz Kraemer, chief rating’s officer at Standard & Poor’s. “The Finns will have a very conservative line as before,” says Mr Kraemer. FATHER OF A CHILD LEGITIMIZATION IN THAILAND You find out that you could be the father of a child in Thailand?

This scenario happens very often, the visitor to Thailand meets a local Thai girl. They spend a week having fun and enjoying each other’s company. The visitor leaves Thailand and about 10 months later, the visitor finds out that the Thai girl gave birth to a child and he might be the father. What is the visitor’s rights and obligations to the child?

Being the biological father of a child does not confer any parental rights even if the father is named on the birth certificate. The father can only be deem the legitimate parent of the child in three ways. The first way is if the father and the mother are legally married at the time of the child’s birth or became legally married, the husband is than the legitimate parent. The second and third way for a father to legitimize their parental rights is through registration with the local amphur with the mother’s consent or through a court judgment. If the visitor believes that he may be the biological father and wants parental rights but does not want to get married, he has two options. He can contact the Thai mother and ask if the mother will consent to the legitimization. If the mother agrees that that visitor is the father, the father can submit a legitimization with local amphur where the child was born. If the mother has not consented to the legitimization, the potential father will have to file a petition for legitimation with the local family court. The mother of the child will have to be served with notice of the petition. After the mother has been served, the court will have a hearing on the evidence. The court can only grant legitimization of the patterning for reasons 1. Where there is a rape, abduction or illegal confinement of the mother during the period when conception APPROACH

could have taken place; or where there has been elopement or seduction of the mother during the period where conception could have been taken place; 2. Where it appears in the birth register that the child is a son or daughter of the man who notified of the birth, or such notification was made with the knowledge of the man; 3. Where there has been open cohabitation of the father and the mother during the period where conception could have been taken place; 4. Where the father continuous provided for the child such as the child’s education or maintenance or has allowed the child to use the father’s family name. If the man is found to be the legitimate father of the child, the father is bound by law to provide for the child’s necessities and educational expenses. As a parent, the father will have the right to make decisions for the best interests of the child including religion, education, residence, discipline, and employment. The court will also provide custody and child support orders as part of the judgment. CASHING IN ON YOUR PENSION Are you a wealthy Brit who doesn’t need the cash from your pension? By Jerry Mcmenamin

Well the day has comee when Brits are able too take out all the moneyy from their pension.. Last Easter Monday was D day. It was great to watch Sky news and listen to the opinion of several pensioners, some would continue as normal but a minority were prepared to pay a whopping tax bill and take the money and run. The whole thing reminded me again about how lucky we are to live in Thailand. I know many malcontent Farangs moan about the traffic, the hot weather, bad driving, poor service etc. etc. Don’t you sometimes wonder why they continue to live here? If they returned home they would have more to moan about. Just as there are professional moaners living here there are also professional spendthrifts. If I count all the cheapskates who know the price of a cupp of coffee in every restaurant in Hua Hin then theyy would far outnumber the spendthrifts. te Of course whether one is a spendthrift or a cheapskate or neither, another huge advantage of living here is that when it comes to pensions then you can have your cake and eat it. Unlike the people I watched being interviewed on Sky most people here can take 75% of their pension pot 35

by paying a small amount of tax. The other 25% is already tax free IIf for example you are living in the UK and have a ppension valued at 1,000,000 pounds you could take 2250,000 tax free then pay tax on the balance and be left with 450,000 pounds. That’s a total of 700,000 le pounds po Living here with your 1,000,000 valued pension you can still take your 250,000 tax free and if you have the correct adviser finish up with a total of 981,000. That’s 281,000 extra. Would you not move to Thailand for that? It’s hardly a hardship posting here despite the impression given by the cheapskates and the moaners. The more money you have in your pension the more attractive this option. at I must emphasise that these figures are before th ccharges. It’s worth paying ffor proper advice is it not? Anyway it is nice to have the choice. It may be a more difficult decision for people with modest pensions to make a move which in a few years could wipe out their income. As always to find out more just ask : thailandexpatfinance@yahoo.com May 2015 APPROACH

THE BROWN SHRIKE Lanius Cristatus The Brown shrike (Lanius cristatus) is a passerine bird in the genus of the Real shrikes (Lanius) within the family of shrikes (Laniidae). By Dr. George F.Grossniklaus

The rather small Strangler quite uniform reddish brown or gray-brown appearance inhabits a very large range, which extends from the Tropic of Cancer in the south to the Arctic Circle in the north. To the west, the types reach the foothills of the Altai in Kazakhstan, in the east the Japanese islands. Most Brown shrike are migratory, those of the Far North extreme long-distance migrants. Only a few populations in south eastern China remain throughout the year in the breeding area. The wintering areas are located in the Indian subcontinent, Indochina, the Philippines Thailand and on most of the islands of Indonesia. Brown shrike feed mainly on insects and other invertebrates, but also prey on small vertebrates such as mice, lizards and birds. They inhabit different habitats, mostly open, easy bush or tree-covered landscapes. The phylogenetic position of the brown shrike within the genus is not sufficiently clarified. Usually it is put together with the Isabelline and the red-backed shrike in a super species. With these two species he hybridizes in the extreme west of its range. Even with the Tiger Shrike, with which mixed breeds were found, he stands in close relationship. The species in which four subspecies are recognized, - despite some dramatic stock declines, particularly in Japan, are not listed in any danger level. Looks With a size of about 18 centimetres in length and a weight of around 33 grams the brown shrike is just as great, and about as heavy as the Red-backed Shrike, he is similar in appearance. The nest consists out of 4-6 eggs from mat white-, pinkish- or greenish staining. Especially at the blunt end they are brown, grey or purple mottled. The nest is almost exclusively incubated by the female for about 15 days (13-16); the male supplies it at this time and in the first week after hatching with food. The young hatch naked and blind, but develop very quickly and leave the nest after 13-14 days 51

MEDITATION Meditation Slows Age-Related Brain Shrinkage We’ve known for a while about the calming, relaxing, and stress-reducing benefits of meditation. Now, new research is also starting to show the tangible, long-term benefits of meditating on the health and capacities of our brain.

A recent study from UCLA has used MRI imaging to show that people who meditate experience less gray matter loss compared with people who do not meditate. In light of much recent research focusing on meditation’s benefits to the brain, the results weren’t particularly surprising. However, the aspect of the study which did surprise researchers was that the effects were not only seen in the portions of the brain associated with meditating. The study is also unique in that it included a large number of long-term meditators. MRIs were taken of 50 meditators (28 men and 22 women) between the ages of 24 and 77. The subjects had practiced meditation from between 4 to 46 years—20 years on average. This study comes at an important time. We know that the weight and volume of the brain in slowly begin to decrease in ones 20’’s, and continues over time, eventuallyy reducing the brain’s ability to functionn optimally. So, even though peoplee are living to be older and older, one’s quality of life often decreases as withh age, partly due to the increasedd likelihood of developing a mental illness or a neurodegenerative disease in ones final years. APPROACH

May 2015

Unless we want quality of life to be sacrificed for a longer life, it’s crucial that we pay more attention to methods of maintaining a healthy brain. In the words of Dr. Eileen Luders, first author of the study: “While much research has focused on identifying factors that increase the risk of mental illness and neurodegenerative decline, relatively less attention has been turned to approaches aimed at enhancing cerebral health.” Although some grey matter reduction is inevitable as we age, the study suggests that meditation may mitigate the deterioration. Meaning, both the meditators and the control group showed some loss in grey matter as they aged, but the grey matter in the brains of those who meditated appeared to be better preserved. So, if you y don’t currently have a regular meditation practice, we recommend starting and w m maintaining one. After all, we’re aall getting older every day…. Unless you’re a little out of the loop, you’ve probably heard about the myriad benefits of meditation. These include fairly predictable benefits like increased concentration, decreased stress and anxiety, and a boost in overall feelings of happiness and wellbeing, to even more surprising benefits like decreases in chronic pain, a stronger immune system, and rebuilding of the brain’s grey matter. Despite how well known and well researched these benefits are, many people still find it difficult to start and maintain a meditation practice. Reasons for this include misconceptions about how to meditate, feeling like they are ‘doing it wrong,’ or a perceived inabilityy to fit meditation into an already busy schedule.. If any of these sound familiar, here are threee important tips that will help you start and maintainn a regular meditation practice: 1. Understand what meditation is—and isn’t Many people wrongly believe that in order to meditate, you must have an empty mind, completely free of thoughts. Here’s the truth: You don’t. Making the mind ‘empty’ for any sustained period of time is very difficult for experienced meditators and virtually impossible for beginners. Unfortunately, this belief makes many people feel like they can’t meditate, ate, or are that they are ‘doing it wrong.’ If this sounds like you, it’s time to re-considerr what meditation actually is. Simply put, meditation is the practice of intentionally focusing your complete attention somewhere. Common focal points include the breath, an affirmation or mantra, or thoughts themselves. To meditate, you do not need to get rid of thoughts, you simply need to be aware of them. Many people say that they can’t meditate because they ‘think too much,’ or ‘can’t turn off the mind.’ If you’re having these feelings, it’s actually good: it means you are aware that you’re thinking. When thoughts arise during meditation, instead of feeling like you’re not meditating or are doing it wrong, simply acknowledge them, and then bring your focus back to your breath or mantra. This is meditation!

2. Make it a routine For those who think they don’t have time for meditation, consider this: we have time for the things we make time for. If you schedule your meditation session into your day, you will have time for it. Whether it’s the first thing you do when you wake up, the last thing you do before you go to bed, or part of your lunch break, make it a regular, routine activity in your day, and stick to it. Meditation also does not need to be an incredibly time consuming activity. Ten minutes of meditation per day can give your body and mind a chance to relax, unwind, de-stress, and regain g focus and energy. Even as little as five minutes of focusing oon the breath can bbe beneficial. In ffact, a study that we ccovered suggested tthat five minutes oof daily meditation ccould change stress perceptions, and thus decrease participants’ heart attack risks. 3. Pay special attention to frustration and anxiety Some of the most common thoughts and feelings that arise when you’re new to meditation run along the lines of: ‘this is too hard,’ ‘I’m doing it wrong,’ ‘I can’t do this,’ ‘what am I doing here?’ ‘This is pointless,’ and ‘why can’t I stop thinking?’ All of these thoughts are totally and completely normal, and not evil or detrimental to your practice. They’re just thoughts, no more or less important than any others. To meditate is to accept and acknowledge these thoughts and feelings as they are, without judgment. Whenever they arise, try responding with a brief, mental, ‘thank you for sharing,’ congratulate yourself for being aware of your thoughts, and then refocus your attention on the breath or whatever other focal point you are working with. There’s no question about it: meditation is a wonderful technique, the benefits of which are only beginning to be explored and recognized. But it’s rarely easy, especially at the beginning! The most important steps you can take to reap the benefits are to make it a routine and not get discouraged. Your physical and mental health will thank you! 55

When it comes to steak, the word ‘Prime’ has an important meaning in Hua Hin. Prime Steakhouse has a reputation of excellent steaks and other European and Scandinavian food. Prime moved recently from Kanjanomai Road to Naresdamri Alley just opposite the Hilton Hotel. If you are a ‘people watcher’ taking a table on the front terrace of the restaurant gives that opportunity with a constant passing parade. Quieter options are inside or at the rear. I was immediately welcomed and seated by choice by the head waitress who gently and efficiently placed a napkin on my lap. Service was flawless, polite and friendly without frustrating delays or misunderstandings The restaurant itself is a cosy place with well-chosen comfortable furniture. I enquired about the portrait framed photos of some well‐presented though unfamiliar faces on the wall. Apparently they are Swedish stars of stage and film. Food reviews usually reveal the urge of the restaurant to display their signature dish which in my case was suggested being a Ribeye Wagyu medium rare with selected side dishes. As the starter was left for me to decide I chose an Italian Bruschetta with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic and olive oil over a slightly toasted slice of tender baguette. Just enough to soften hunger pangs, accompanied by a glass of fresh Frascati sparkling wine. Steaks at Prime are of Australian origin, carefully selected by Executive Chef Anders who shares the business with his brother, Peter Hagsted.

The Wagyu steak ak suggested to mee was perfectlyy cooked to my wishes. When your knife just slices through without effort it’s likely that your steak will be succulent. Just a simple steak dinner with all the essential flavours is the Prime Steakhouse way to ensure your urges are satisfied; fantastic! The dinner was delicious and absolutely Prime! This goes as well for the starters, sauces and side dishes. The Argentinian medium bodied red wine, a Malbec from the Chakana vineyards, 919 metres above sea-level fitted perfectly to the succulent ucculent steak and made my meal complete. To round off thiss delicious meal, youu need a desert of Crème Brulé with ann Affogato (based on Italian iced coffee), e), homemade ice cream, a fresh sorbet or fruit platter as a finale. An Aquavit for the road ? Yes why not. Better reserve a table : Phone 032 512 979; Open: 6 pm to 11 pm daily 59

We can notice for the past few years, that exercising and eating healthy are ďŹ nally getting into people’s minds, and it looks like the fashion in that area has grown as well.

Although it might seem like yesterday when sportswear was all about throwing on a pair of loose pants, a slouchy t-shirt and a cool cap, years have since gone by and with them the evolution in term of fabrics, colors and shapes. The sports influences are no longer exclusively for Athletes. As women even though we are going to sweat at the gym, we still want to look good and feel good about ourself, and all Sports brands have understood that and provide us a large choice of sporty-clothing and make an elegant look these days. y

Take risks with apparel when you’re feelingg more dramatic! Tips for Rocking the Neutrals + Neon Trend • Get great neutrals. Avoid l looking like a glowiming stick by picking a single bold color to work into y look either grey neutral or black. Right now, the trendiest hues seem your t be neon yellow-green and orange, but shades of electric pink, turquoise, to and purple can work, too. Pick your favorite and go from there! • Don’t over do it! It’s best to keep the rest of your look simple and classic. You guys are not going to believe that sexy Red lips pop in the 2015 summer trend. You do not have to be a professional makeup artist this summer to be pretty because we do not need full make up in the hot weather. No any other heavy cosmetics or sharp lines required. Just grab and put Red lipstick on with nice browns brushed, nothing can beat you this summer. Choosing the right shade of red lipstick is as fun as picking good champagne. Most of the time, it turns out to be not only one bottle back home! Fair complexion can go with any a kind of red especially fruity shades shade like cherry, cranberry, and red wine shades. Medium-complexion are good with red lipstick with orangish oran pigmentation. Darker skin complexion com is more attractive with red-based red purple, tangerine or even bright and young raspberry red. There Th is always beauty in simplicity of red lips.

As cliché as it may sound eyes es are the window of your heartrt and they tell the truth, I thinkk it is a good idea to focuss on accentuating your eyess particularly by wearing the perfect eyeliner. Since you are not going to highlight any other part of your face except your eyes, you can be more stylish and play with your eyeliners by making them thicker, fancier or slicker. V-shaped V-s eyeliner; outline on the outward parts of the corners of your eyes ey both upper and lower eyelashes, make precise flicks shaped like a V at the end of your eyes. Thick and intense eyeliner; this technique can c be done to give a smoky eyes look without any eyeshadow required. r Make sure that you smudge the liners from dots on both upper and lower lids. The magic of small little liners can transform you yo in a great summer way. Ensure to choose water and budge proof formula f l to provide id you llong lasting wear during the hot days in summer. Now ladies, you don’t have to totally bare your face this summer without any makeup on. My recommendations, you can apply the nude makeup style with long lasting wear formula giving you a natural look or just easily put your favorite sexy red lip stick shade on your lips to brighten up your summer day. Creating fun and creative eyeliner can save your days in summer as well. Finally, Keep in mind girls!..... “Beauty isn’t only about how you see yourself in the mirror, real beauty is how others see the sincerity of your actions through the beauty of your soul.” Share me your pure beauty story at Approachnatcha@gmail.com 67

Bullying is a widespread problem in our schools and communities. The behaviour encompasses physical aggression, threats, teasing, and harassment. Although it can lead to violence, bullying typically is not categorized with more serious forms of school violence involving weapons, vandalism, or physical harm. It is, however, an unacceptable anti-social behaviour that is learned through influences in the environment, e.g., home, school, peer groups, even the media. As such, it also can be unlearned or, better yet, prevented. APPROACH

May 2015

A bully is someone who directs physical, verbal, or psychological aggression or harassment toward others, with the goal of gaining power over or dominating another individual. Research indicates that bullying is more prevalent in boys than girls, though this difference decreases when considering indirect aggression (such as verbal threats). A victim is someone who repeatedly is exposed to aggression from peers in the form of physical attacks, verbal assaults, or 70

respond to potentially damaging victimization as well as to implement positive feedback and modeling to address appropriate social interactions. Support services personnel working with administrators can help design effective teacher training modules. Attitude change. Researchers maintain that society must cease defending bullying behavior as part of growing up or with the attitude of “kids will be kids.” Bullying can be stopped! School personnel should never ignore bullying behaviors. Positive school environment. Schools with easily understood rules of conduct, smaller class sizes and fair discipline practices report less violence. A positive school climate will reduce bullying and victimization.

psychological abuse. Victims are more likely to be boys and to be physically weaker than peers. They generally do not have many, if any, good friends and may display poor social skills and academic difficulties in school. Bullying is the most common form of violence in our society; between 15% and 30% of students are bullies or victims. Direct, physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school and declines in high school. Verbal abuse, on the other hand, remains constant. Over two-thirds of students believe that schools respond poorly to bullying, with a high percentage of students believing that adult help is infrequent and ineffective. FAMILY FACTORS: The frequency and severity of bullying is related to the amount of adult supervision that children receive—bullying behavior is reinforced when it has no or inconsistent consequences. Additionally, children who observe parents and siblings exhibiting bullying behavior, or who are themselves victims, are likely to develop bullying behaviors. When children receive negative messages or physical punishment at home, they tend to develop negative self concepts and expectations, and may therefore attack before they are attacked—bullying others gives them a sense of power and importance. School factors: Because school personnel often ignore bullying, children can be reinforced for intimidating others. Bullying also thrives in an environment where students are more likely to receive negative feedback and negative attention than in a positive school climate that fosters respect and sets high standards for interpersonal behavior. Researchers advocate school-wide prevention programs that promote a positive school and community climate. Existing programs can effectively reduce the occurrence of bullying; in fact, one program decreased peer victimization by 50%. Such programs require the participation and commitment of students, parents, educators and members of the community. Effective school programs include: Parent training. Parents must learn to reinforce their children’s positive behavior patterns and model appropriate interpersonal interactions. School psychologists, social workers and counselors can help parents support children who tend to become victims as well as recognize bullying behaviors that require intervention. Teacher training. Training can help teachers identify and

What Can Parents Do? Contact the school’s psychologist, counselor or social worker and ask for help around bullying or victimization concerns. Become involved in school programs to counteract bullying. Provide positive feedback to children for appropriate social behaviors and model interactions that do not include bullying or aggression. Use alternatives to physical punishment, such as the removal of privileges, as a consequence for bullying behavior. Stop bullying behavior as it is happening and begin working on appropriate social skills early. 71

The Giant Bookworm Part Thirteen 6ɪɗ 7ʋQʔLɢ The Story So Far: Amelia and Sal went to Reckwood village with a scheme to rid the orphanage of Madame Cole. But instead, they met a surprise – June, the Aunty Amelia never knew she had. Amelia’s people, it seems, are from Beekwood, where Amelia was supposed to be. Sal and Amelia were not meant to meet, but it is learning that Sal had known all along, that hurt Amelia the most. I couldn’t move. It should have been easy to follow Amelia. I could’ve stopped her before she had gotten started. Shame, however, froze me in place, and kept me staring at her tiny footprints, reliving her expression of pure hurt and betrayal, and remembering that she had an Aunty now. Would she even want to see me ever again? “Sal!” cried a girl’s voice. I turned, almost expecting to see Amelia. It was another girl leading a grown woman not that much taller than her outside. “I’m Ella, this is June, which way did Amelia go?” The girl asked. I pointed towards the forest in response. I had a bad feeling that Amelia would go too far and meet dangers she’d only read about in fairy-tales, territorial leprechauns and the rare but deadly shape-shifting predators. “I’m sure she’ll come back on her own, and when she does, we’ll be here waiting for her.” June said and sat down on a wooden bench. Ella fetched a pile of rag-like clothes to be mended, and settled next to June. Hours passed in near silence. Above us, clouds gathered, around us, wind gushed wildly. These were the first hints of spring storms. It was unlikely it would actually rain today, but the clouds would remain, continuing to block out the sun. When the dinner bell rang inside I knew Amelia had to be found, and fast, before night made the darkness absolute. A few moments later Madame Cole joined us, pulling a shawl around her, “Is she still not back?” It was a pointless question we all ignored. “Sal, how about you go that way,” June rose and gestured to the woods. “Madame and I can go this way,” She pointed to the opposite direction, “In case Amelia circled back, and Lucida can stay here, in case she comes back to the orphanage.” “And I’ll head towards your house Sal, in case she went that way.” Ella offered, and was off and running before anyone could tell her not to.

The ground underfoot suddenly felt harder than before. The wind more like punches than gusts. I could see through the smallest gaps between trees and their leaves. I could smell the usually hidden scents tucked in each plant. I heard snippets of Madame Cole and June arguing, and Ella’s shallow breaths as she ran. I directed my senses ahead of me, caught Amelia’s scent, and the sound of tears, trickling. My progress was even more slow-going through the forest where it was so much easier to step on a tree and destroy some poor creature’s home. Every branch that grazed my knees stung, every step on a stone or fallen twig bruised. Finally, I halted, seeing Amelia upon a mound of boulders that poked above the forest. Her eyelids were screwed shut, but tears continued to seep through. Around her, fairies tugged at her hair, pinched her skin, and pulled at her clothes. I knew Amelia was not unaware of them, I suspected her eyes were closed to stop the faeries from inspecting them too. I closed my senses, glad to shut off the overwhelming sensations, and took another step forward. The fairies turned, saw me, and darted away. Amelia’s eyelids flew open, and her gaze landed on me. She backed up, and I was reminded of our first conversation, when Amelia thought I was a monster. The way she was looking at me now, scrambling backwards on the rock, made me wonder if maybe I was. “Amelia,” I said. I didn’t know where to go from there, but she did: “Why didn’t you tell me?” I gulped. “I wanted to protect you,” “That doesn’t make any sense! I thought…I thought we were friends,” “Amelia. You’d been through so much! I was worried if you knew, you’d leave Reckwood, and I wouldn’t be able to protect you from harm,” “You’re a giant Sal. Why bother with a human? Why aren’t you with other giants?” “Because there are no other giants,” Amelia’s jaw fell. “I’m the last one,” “You never –,” “I know! I never told you anything, I was worried you’d think I was crazy or an abomination. I hear my family’s voices in my head, but I am all alone. I can open my senses and feel, hear, see, smell, and taste all of Reckwood. I can’t read, and I can’t hunt without attracting attention. I knew it was stupid to take the library that day, but I did it anyway. And then when I opened up that library and found you,” I took a deep breath and rushed on, “I came to think maybe it was never the books that lured me to Reckwood, maybe it was something else. And when I realised you were never meant to come to R-reckwood I wasn’t b-brave enough to t-tell you,” I swallowed. “I thought we were each other’s new family.”

We went our separate ways, me going as swiftly as I could without accidentally stepping on humans, animals or plants. I thought about why the village was named after the woods. Reckwood, because the forest was considered a useless wreck they could not plunder, with wood too thick to cut, and a stream too wide to cross. But Amelia wasn’t like the rest of them. She’d chosen to live with me, after all. I was sure if any human could cross the stream, Amelia could, and she may not have even felt the shimmer of magic as she did.

Amelia stood up, and wiped away her tears. “You’re not crazy Sal. You’re…amazing,” She brushed off her skirt, and inhaled. “I’ve

Just one bound took me over the stream, then I closed my eyes and did something I hadn’t done since I was a child – I opened my senses.

by Tamara Ireland Stone Hyperion, 368 pages, Bookommended Price: 455 Baht Teen romance becomes so much more impossible in this impressive debut from Tamara Ireland Stone. Anna and Bennet should never have met. She lives in 1995 Chicago (USA), and he lives in 2012 San Francisco. But Bennet’s ability to travel through time has caused him to lose someone close to him, and his search for her has taken him into Anna’s life. Anna has a life too – and she isn’t the sort to fuss about boys. Living with her loving parents; she is the least fancy student at a fancy high school; she runs cross-country; is the passenger in dangerous drives to school with her spoilt but sweet friend Emma; works at her father’s bookstore; listens to (great) music tapes her friend, Justin, makes for her; and dreams of travelling the world beyond her small town life. But Anna and Bennet can’t stay away from each other, and as they fall in love during unusual dates lit with snarky, colourful conversation, their relationship is challenged by the laws of time, and they come to question everything they thought they knew. Even though a sequel is to be expected, this evenly paced, well-polished book reads as a solid stand-alone novel. Fans of the genre (YA paranormal romance) will note its similarities to Twilight (Stephanie Meyer, 2005) – an unorthodox romance; a near-perfect but mysterious male protagonist; how Anna is helplessly drawn to Bennet, and his protectiveness of her – but will also appreciate its differences – Anna’s personal ambition and strength; the 90s’ setting; Bennet’s humanness… And will ultimately enjoy every moment of it.

An enjoyable family movie for ages 8+, that will resonate with teen audiences.
