Vegetative characteristics The water spinach is an annual or perennial herbaceous plant, which grows anchoring in the ground, crawling or swimming in water. The stem is hairless, turning round, thick and hollow, develop adventitious roots at the nodes. The petioles are 3 to 14 cm long and also hairless. The leaf blade is very variable, it may be ovate, ovate-lanceolate, oblong or lanceolate, the length varies from 3.5 to 17 cm, ZLGWK WR FP 5DUHO\ WKH OHDI EODGH LV ÀQHO\ KDLU\ XVXDOO\ it is hairless. Fruits and seeds The woody fruit capsules have a diameter of about 1 cm and burst little or possibly not even open. Each chamber of the capsule contains only one or two seeds. The seeds are densely hairy greyish, only sometimes glabrous, oblong and 6 mm long and 4 mm wide. APPROACH

t was easy to fake bravery going into Reckwood with Sal. He had made a small clay cylinder with two holes on opposite sides, through which he threaded a string of wool. I stood inside it, leaning against the rim like a rail, the cup bouncing against his chest as he walked. We both ignored the abandoned homes. We didn’t comment on the weight of his footsteps. And wouldn’t pay any attention to the scattering villagers. When we reached the orphanage, Sal removed the cup from around his neck and lowered me down to the threshold, like a bucket descending a well. “Remember what we talked about.” He murmured. I nodded and then, with a deep breath I held for minutes to come, knocked. They already knew Sal and I were there of course – they were much too quick to open the door. Madame Cole, Mrs. Better, and another woman I’d never seen before crowded the doorway. “Amelia!” said Madame Cole in a high-pitched tone. “Do come in,” “Um, if you lock me up, Sal will pull this building off the ground and search for me himself,” I warned. “Yes dear, but whatever makes you think we would lock you up? We’re just so happy to see you safe and sound, aren’t we Lucida?” Mrs. Better grunted as if she’d been elbowed in the ribs and stammered, “Y-yes we are!” Madame Cole took my arm and led me inside. When I tried to pull away, she pinched my skin. “Ow!” I cried. “Oh dear, did you step on something sharp?” she gave me a pointed glare and then smiled at the stranger, “These children, always leaving their games lying around!” And then she laughed – yes, laughed – and the sound would have been scary even if you didn’t know that Madame Cole only laughed when something was very wrong. They led me into the parlour, where I am usually not allowed to be. Good china was laid out on a low wooden table, and freshly baked muffins – yes, muffins – had been set out. “Amelia, June, please sit,” Morning sunlight streamed into the room, and I was able to get a good look at this ‘June’. She was of average height, with neither a solid nor skinny build. She had a button nose, and her small eyes were a soft blue under her not-quite-cocoabrown-hair, which was pulled back into a hurried ponytail. She smiled tentatively at me. Her front teeth were far from straight, but they were all there. I stretched out a hand. “Nice to meet you June,” I said quietly. “It’s very nice to meet you Amelia,” June clamped my hand between both her palms and shook with more strength than I would have guessed she had. I turned

back to Madame Cole and Mrs. Better. “I am here to see Orthella, if you would please excuse me,” Madame Cole came into the room and rested a hand on my back. “Not so fast. Amelia dear, June is your Aunty. We’ll leave you two to talk.” “But all my relatives are dead!” I cried. The door closed leaving us alone. “Perhaps that is the case for all your blood relatives,” June said softly. “I was married to your father’s brother. He passed away a few years ago,” I felt myself start to shake and sat down slowly. “You don’t understand, I have no family. Maybe you’ve mistaken me for someone else. How could I have an uncle that Father never spoke of ?” “They had a falling out. My late husband disagreed with your father’s decision to follow your Ma into the city. They never spoke again after he left Beekwood,” “Beekwood?” I leaned back in the plush chair, but only because I could no longer hold myself up. “What’s Beekwood?” My teeth began to chatter. “Beekwood is where your father’s people come from. The person who sent you here read your father’s handwriting wrong, and there was a mix-up. A few weeks ago, I got the letter about you parents’ passing, and went to the city to find you. They told me you were here, so I have come for you. Amelia,” June reached out and laid her palm on my knee. “You can come home now.” I stood up, brushing off her touch. “You mean…I was never meant…to come to Reckwood?” “Yes. I am so sorry you had to live here, with that giant problem. The Council of Ministers is dispatching warriors to stamp it out now,” “They’ll kill him, won’t they?” I didn’t need to see June’s slight nod to know it was the truth. “No, no, no. I have to tell Sal –,” June started to speak, but I was already out the room, ignoring her calls, pushing past Madame Cole and Mrs Better (who had been eavesdropping, naturally) and burst outside before Sal. “Sal! Warriors are coming for you! And I’m not from Reckwood! I’m from Beekwood! I have an Aunty! Sal?” I looked up, wondering why Sal had not said a word or moved a muscle, and gasped, “You knew.” “No Amelia, I j-just guessed –” “–And never told me, how long have you known?” “W-when you told me about your parent’s d-deaths. Reckwood is a f-fairly new village, I knew your family couldn’t have l-lived here for g-generations,” “I trusted you Sal and you kept this from me!” I may have been outdoors, but I felt like I was trapped in a small closet, its walls collapsing on top of me.
