N

ot such a thing as a free lunch. Going through the internet health section, you are warned of so many health issues with food, from high sugar levels in Thailand to genetically modified corn in the USA. Then a company pops up that is going to give you health advise , change your life and all for free. When you listen to their never ending soap opera, you need to sig up, give them your credit card details, I don´t know why as it is free….they claim they are not allowed by law to offer you anything free or send it free of charge…you don´t want to know how many folks fall into this trap(crap). These days, not much you can eat without reading about it how unhealthy it is. Even at home there is a turnaround in eating habits. Gone is the steak, gone the burger, pre-packed toast bread and evening ice cream. Coke is out and even some beers that are contaminated with chemicals are banned. Now mineral water with Fluor which only a few years ago was to save us from tooth decay is hazardous for health! People go on the street against Monsanto and other companies that grow GMFood ( Genetically Modified Food). The HSI (Health Sciences Institute) in the US preaches secret cures that the government may ban, ban good cures with Cesium, all to be read in the free sample of Miracles from the Vault…if you subscribe to the 6 month “ Trial” membership……..However GMF makes sense if you can feed more poor regions with healthy, faster growing food... otherwise? The whole world is on the move, protests, wars, Syrian Apocalipse. Now the rebels are true rebels as they belong to islamic extremists. Who are the real good guys? To end this food section: I received an email from a reader who said my article on coconut oil was misleading as coconut oil was really bad for you if taken in large quantities. Did the article tell him to drink it or create a Pina Colada with coconut oil? Here ya go Jas; As there is very little evidence that supports the perpetrated benefits of coconut oil in terms of health, further research and long term studies are required to investigate these claims before coconut oil can be considered a healthy alternative to other fats. Coconut oil is a saturated fat, and as such should be limited to very small quantities. Whilst a little coconut oil may be a viable alternative to other saturated fats such as butter, there is no evidence that it should replace unsaturated fats such as olive oil, which has well substantiated research into the benefits associated with its intake. Switch to frozen Margaritas. APPROACH does not publish health articles before carefully examining them. They do not express our opinion but they relate to research and development…which changes on an almost daily base as computer analyses speed up fed data being processed. Remember coffee is good for you, taken in small portions and only 1-2 cuppas a day. I am off for a Cappucino (yai)… Yours truly, GMoss

Sony Xperia Tablet Z Android tablets aren’t really interesting news these days, with the market starting to flood with everything from budget Chinese releases to high-end hardware feasts. We’ll make a brief exception for the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, which packs some of the more impressive hardware features we’ve seen in the current crop of Jelly Bean releases. Details of the Sony Xperia Tablet Z include a 10.1-inch display with Mobile Bravia Engine 2 (a whopping 1920 x 1200 resolution), an 8.1 megapixel Exmor R camera, WiFi, NFC, LTE, Bluetooth, S-Force virtual surround sound, 32GB of onboard storage and microSD card expansion. Muscle is provided by a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm CPU, paired with 2GB of RAM. And like the Xperia Z smartphone, the whole thing is both waterproof and dustproof, giving it just that extra push of usability for those who like to use their tablets outdoors.

PowerFlask Charger Shaped like a regular flask, it should fit in wherever you normally squeeze in your drinking flask – back pocket, jacket pocket, backpack pouch and all those other holes. The PowerFlask is a portable charger packing a 13,000 mAh lithium-ion battery inside the erstwhile drinking flask frame. It comes with two USB slots for charging your gadgets and one microUSB slot for recharging, along with two 30-pin iPhone cables, a USB to microUSB cable and a USB to dual micro-USB cable. According to the product page, it should charge three gadgets (using the dual micro-USB cable for one port and a regular cable on the other port) at the same time with no problem.

Hublot Big Bang Black Magic Kingston HyperX Predator

If Darth Vader was still alive he would probably chosen this watch. The Black Magic has a 44mm black ceramic case, carbon dial and self-winding HUB 4100 movement with chronograph function. Furthermore after a long day of light saber fights the watch has approximately 42 hours of power reserve. In addition the Big Bang is also suited to bring aquatic life over to the dark side, but not deeper than 100 meters.

A 1 terabyte (1000 gigabyte) USB thumb drive that literally crams a flash disk full of all the movies and music you could want on the go into a tiny package. That way, you don’t have to bother carrying multiple 32GB thumb drives around -- just one should be enough to get you through most boring 3-day business trips. The Kingston HyperX Predator is a USB 3.0 drive that can transfer data at speeds of up to 160 mbps. Other than the massive capacity, it looks like any regular thumb drive (maybe slightly bigger), so it should be just as convenient to bring along as your usual favorite pocket able storage.

HTC One From a specs standpoint, the HTC One enters the game as what I would consider the best phone in the business. We’re talking the newest processor (Snapdragon 600 quad-core), 4G LTE, 2GB RAM, a 4.7” 1080p display with 468ppi, 2300mAh battery, and a body made of aluminum. And for those who care about technology being “future proof,” the One also has 802.11ac, which will eventually become the new WiFi standard. There are no other phones on the planet that match the One in overall quality and completeness when it comes to hardware. If you want nextgen everything, which includes a glorified 4MP camera, the One has it all.

MUSIC

200Years Jazz

by Mephisto

J

azz is a music that originated at the beginning of the 20th century, arguably earlier, within the African-American communities of the Southern United States. Its roots lie in the adoption by

African-Americans of European harmony and form, taking on those European elements and combining them into their existing Africanbased music. Its African musical basis is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation and the swung note. From its early development until the present day, jazz has also incorporated elements from popular music especially, in its early days, from American popular music. Though jazz and classic blues are really early twentieth-century black music innovations, certain characteristics found in jazz do have their roots in much earlier musical traditions. Call and response, improvisation, the appropriation and reinvention of elements from Western art music: black music in the twentieth-century has never held a monopoly on these musical practices. For instance, the era American historians call “antebellum” (roughly 1815-1861) holds much of interest to researchers looking for the deep roots of jazz. But the North American variation and reinvention of African tradition in the early nineteenth-century was not monolithic. That is to say, depending on the region and the demands of the musical audience-whether it be fellow slaves or plantation-owners--the music varied from place to place. This sort of Love and Theft of rhythms, tunes , lyric styles according to Eric Lott, set a precedent for a whole tradition of blackface in America where white performers would borrow lovingly, profitably, and heavily from black musical styles, from Dan Rice to Elvis.

Jazz - while jazz is considered difficult to define, improvisation is

consistently regarded as being one of its key elements. The centrality of improvisation in jazz is attributed to its presence in influential earlier forms of music: the early blues, a form of folk music which arose in part from the work songs and field hollers of the African-American workers on plantations. These were commonly structured around a repetitive call-andresponse pattern, but early blues was also highly improvisational. Although European classical music has been said to be a composer’s medium in which the performer is sometimes granted discretion over interpretation, ornamentation and accompaniment, the performer’s primary goal is to play a composition as it was written. In contrast, jazz is often characterized as the product of group creativity, interaction, and collaboration, that places varying degrees of value on the contributions of composer (if there is one) and performers.

Blues - is the name given to both a musical form and a music genre that originated in African-American communities of primarily the “Deep South” of the United States around the end of the 19th century from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll is characterized by specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues chord progression is the most common. The blue notes that, for expressive purposes are sung or played flattened or gradually bent (minor 3rd to major 3rd) in relation to the pitch of the major scale, are also an important part of the sound.

St. Florianer Sängerknaben The history of the Convent of St. Florian can be traced back to the early Christian burial site of Saint Florian the Martyr (304 AD). The convent’s baroque church built by Carlo Carlone and Jakob Prandtauer is one of the most beautiful examples of Austrian architecture. The institution of St. Florian Convent Boys’ Choir goes back as far as 1071, at the time when monks of the Augustiner Chorherren took over the monastery. The choir has many different responsibilities. Church music is still of central importance. On High Holidays the SFSK join with the Convent Choir and the Convent Orchestra under the direction of Professor Augustinus Franz Kropfreiter in singing mass.

Austria´s most famous Boy Choir will be performing live on July 7th. at the ballroom whilst a delectable international buffet can be indulged into. There is a pre-dinner cocktail at the lobby from 6:30 pm onwards. The St. Florianer Sängerknaben (St. Florian Boys’ Choir) (= SFSK) can look back on a thousand-year-old tradition. In the olden days the Boys’ Choir were responsible for providing church music at the Convent of St. Florian; today, however, they are also an internationally acclaimed concert choir sponsored by the “Society of the Friends of St. Florian Boys’ Choir”.

But they are also an internationally acclaimed choir, travelling all over the world as well as recording CD’s or frequently appearing on television. The boys have sung in world-famous music festivals as well as in famous opera houses. Since 1983, Professor Franz Farnberger has been the choir director. The Society of Friends of the St. Florian Boys’ Choir was founded in 1996. One year later it assumed responsibility for the institution of the Boys’ Choir. Large-scale rebuilding as well as modernization of the Convent’s boarding school was undertaken as a result of the Society’s financial support as well as generous support from the Provincial Government of Upper Austria. Concert at the Hilton on July 5th., 7pm.

Wooden

THE UNIQUE SUMMER RESIDENCE BUILD BY KING RAMA 6.

HERITAGE

The location was found convenient because Cha-Am was by then connected to Bangkok by rail and the area was beneficial to health with its forest and fresh sea air.

M

aruekhathaiyawan Palace between Cha-Am and Hua Hin was built by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) as a seaside summer retreat in 1923. Originally, the King had a Palace built on Hat Chao Samran beach, a little more North, but he was unhappy with it and decided to demolish the building and use the teak wood to construct a new Palace facing the sea in Cha-Am district. The location was found convenient because Cha-Am was by then connected to Bangkok by rail and the area was beneficial to health with its forest and fresh sea air. The Palace is built raised from the ground on pillars and entirely made from teak wood. Its very attractive architectural style is completely different from that of other Thai Palaces. The overall design of the Palace was done by the King himself, and it was built to be a very comfortable place with excellent ventilation and niches filled with water in the pillars to keep out ants. Ercole Manfredi, an Italian architect was hired to finish the design. King Rama VI used the Palace, which name is also written as Marukhathaiyawan or Mrigadayavan, as a summer residence for him and other members of the Royal Family until his death in 1925. The Palace of Love and Hope The Palace, which is also called The Palace of Love and Hope, is made up of three sections connected by long covered walkways. Two long covered corridors connect the Palace with the beach, one from the King’s personal living quarters and one from the women’s section of the Palace. The section called Phisarn Sakorn consists of King Vajiravudh’s personal living chambers. There is a bedroom, a bathroom, a dressing room, a study room and a dining area. King Vajiravudh, who ruled from 1920 until 1925, was a great poet and while staying at Maruekhathaiyawan Palace wrote literature in his study overlooking the sea. The King’s wife, Queen Indrasakdi Sachi lived in the Samundra Biman section of the Palace, which contained a number of rooms including a living room, a bedroom, a dressing room and a bathroom as well as a corridor leading to a bathing pavilion on the beach. The Sewakamart section was used for official functions, offices and a theatre where dramas were performed. When the Royal Family would come to stay in Maruekhathaiyawan Palace for the summer, the furniture would be moved there from Bangkok.

After the King’s death in 1925, the Palace was left deserted.Today, it has been fully restored and you can still see some of the King’s furniture like his writing desk with pencils and paper, sofa and bed. Walking around the Palace will give you a rare insight into how the Thai Royal Family used to live almost a century ago. After visiting the Palace, you can enjoy a walk on the nature trail in the surrounding mangrove forest. How to get to Maruekhathaiyawan Palace Maruekhathaiyawan Summer Palace is located almost halfway between Cha-Am and Hua Hin , some 10 kilometers South of Cha-Am and 15 kilometers North of Hua Hin inside the Rama VI army camp. From either place, you can easily and quickly reach it by taxi or tuk-tuk. There is also a local orange colored bus between Cha-Am and Hua Hin that will stop there on request. Opening hours & admission The Palace can be visited every day except Wednesday from 8 am until 4 pm, Saturday and Sunday until 5 pm. Admission is 60 Thai Baht per person. Please take off your shoes when you go inside the upstairs area of the Palace. You can put your shoes in a cloth bag that is provided at the stairs and carry them until you exit the upper floor of the Palace. Taking photos upstairs inside the Palace is not allowed. Please dress appropriately which means no short pants or short skirts, no sleeveless shirts. Sarong like clothing is available that you can return on exiting the Palace. Bicycles are for hire to explore the area and the surrounding mangrove nature trail.

LET’S YOU GET ACQUAINTED WITH SOME OF THE MOST REMARKABLE AND INNOVATIVE ARTISTS OF THIS DAY.

Camouflage extrodinaire,

ART

Liu Bolin

The Invisible Man ARTIST AND CAMOUFLAGE EXTRODINAIRE LIU BOLIN OPENED A NEW EXHIBITION AT GALLERY PARIS-BEIJING IN PARIS.

T

he gallery features a number of new works that depict the artist perfectly hidden amongst urban backdrops. Remarkably the effect is achieved without the use of special effects or Photoshop, rather Bolin is painstakingly painted head-to-toe by a group of assistants using photographs of the area behind him as a guide. “My intention was not to disappear in the environment but instead to let the environment take possession of me”, he says. Bolin’s intent is not to simply hide himself as an individual but suggests the works are statement regarding damage caused by economic and urban development.

Keng Lye’s paint and rasin sculptures

Alive Without Breath

SINGAPORE-BASED ARTIST KENG LYE CREATES NEAR LIFE-LIKE SCULPTURES OF ANIMALS RELYING ON LITTLE BUT PAINT, RESIN AND A PHENOMENAL SENSE OF PERSPECTIVE.

L

ye slowly fills bowls, buckets, and boxes with alternating layers of acrylic paint and resin, creating aquatic animal life that looks so real it could almost pass for a photograph. The artist is using a technique very similar to Japanese painter Riusuke Fukahori who was featured on this blog a little over a year ago, though Lye seems to take things a step further by making his paint creations protrude from the surface, adding another level of dimension to a remarkable medium. Keng Lye: “I started my first series in 2012 where all the illustrations were flat and depth was created using the layering of resin and acrylic over the different parts of the illustration. This year, I started on the octopus and it was purely an experiment; I just wanted to see whether I could push this technique to a higher level. After applying acrylic paint straight onto the resin, I incorporated a 3-D element in this instance, it was a small pebble for the ranchu and octopus. For the turtle, I used an egg shell for the turtle shell and acrylic paint for the rest of the finishing. The whole idea here was to give the art work an even more 3D effect therefore you can have a better view from any angle. I think there are still many other techniques to explore.”

ART New York by Nathan Walsh

Remarkable Realistic MANY PAINTERS WORKING FROM PHOTOGRAPIC SOURCE MATERIAL EMPLOY A WIDE VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES TO ARRIVE AT A FINAL IMAGE.

T

his will involve anything from loose sketching beforehand to complex grids, where a photograph is translated into paint box by box. Such is not the case with British painter Nathan Walsh who instead relies on elaborate drawings reminiscent of architectural blueprints before every committing paint to canvas. This deep reverence for the underpinning geometry and perspective gives each work a sense of life that might otherwise not be present in something created with the mechanical aid of a camera or software. Walsh tells me his primary source materials are not photographs but pencil sketches drawn on-site, for example the Chicago pieces above began from over 100 drawings he then references in his studio. In this way he can easily alter the position and size of any particular element, a process he likens to “building a world from scratch. Personally I think the process is more akin to building the entire world in his mind so he can better represent it later in his paintings, each of which takes up to 3-4 months to complete.

ART

Walsh explaines: “I deal exclusively with the urban landscape and aim to present a painted world which in some ways resembles the world we live in. I am fascinated by the city, it’s visual complexity and constant state of flux. The act of painting is an attempt fix this information and give vision to our experience of living within it. The work aims to create credible and convincing space which whilst making reference to our world displays it’s own distinct logic. This space is created through drawing, which I see as fundamental in establishing a world the viewer can engage with. Drawing allows me to make human pictorial decisions instead of relying on the mechanical eye of a camera or software package. This process is open ended and changes from one painting to the next. Whilst I employ a variety of perspectival strategies, these methods are not fixed or rigid in their application. K

privately owned island about 30 min boat ride away off the coast of the increasingly popular town of Bangsaphan which is a 2-3 hour journey by car, bus or train, south of Hua Hin. Inland, tropical evergreen rainforest covers the island and trekking is possible. Other activities include kayaking and sailing but most of these are arranged by the sole resort on the island.

with depths at around 14 meters max and visibility from 5 to 15 meters. It is ideal for beginners as currents are weak and there are some good coral formations in the depths and around the smaller islands off Koh Talu. More information can be found on the Bangsaphan Guide. Take a look also at our South of Hua Hin forum for disussion on other nearby areas of interest.

oh Talu is a

Koh Talu has lovely palm fringed beaches and a shallow reef that is ideal for snorkelling. Fish life is thriving and you’ll see Parrotfish, Wrasse, Sargent major fish and a good variety of hard coral. With shallow fringing reef and coral gardens it homes a wide variety of marine fishes. Larger schools of snappers and fusiliers can be seen and the hard coral is in good condition and relatively unspoilt. There is also a shallow bay ideal for snorkelers where a sandy bottom is covered with coral outcrops. It is the closest place to Hua Hin that you can go scuba diving

Koh Talu Island Resort - If you fancy staying on the island, the Koh Talu Island Resort can lodge you. It is made up of luxury bungalows all with air conditioning, private balcony, sea or garden views, tv, refrigerator and mini bar. A first-class restaurant serves Thai cuisine, seafood and also has a barbecue and buffet. Other facilities include mountain bike and kayak rental, internet, traditional massage, boat trips, fishing and trekking.

Ban Krut Can you imagine an unspoilt stretch of beach where you can walk with white powdery sand underfoot and barely see another soul. If you can you have just discovered Ban Krut. Ban Krut is typified by clean air, small fishing villages and among the most pleasant and enjoyable beaches anywhere in Thailand. On these pages you will find out how to book accommodation, find restaurants and see what attractions Ban Krut has to offer. The weather is generally favourable but the better months are from November to March which is sunny and warm, April to July when it is hot with some rain and August to October when the monsoon season is in full swing. At night the ocean is dotted with small squid fishing boats, green lights illuminating the horizon. There is very little development along this coast from Ban Krut to Bang Saphan and the resorts that are here are all low rise bungalow style. The beaches that stretch from Ban Krut to Bang Saphan are all very quiet or even deserted. Ban Krut has plenty of accommodation with more than 20 resorts of varying from low budget to exclusive

At night the ocean is dotted with small squid fishing boats, green lights illuminating the horizon.

Bang Saphan Around 20 kilometers south of Ban Krut is the neighbouring town of Bangsaphan, it can be reached along the beach road (the most scenic way), inland roads, or by going back to Petchkasem Road and heading south (though this doubles the distance). Bang saphan is still an undiscovered getaway destination so come and see it now before the crowds descend! Furthermore Bangsaphan does not have as many accommodation options as Ban Krut but it is slowly developing, there is no “beach road” as such so the bungalows and resorts that are there are spread over an area of about a kilometer. There are also a couple of larger resorts. There is a bigger expat community in Bangsaphan so the number of bars and restaurants that cater to western tastes is greater, there are also a number of good Thai restaurants. Among the better ones are I-Talay, Why Not, Montri’s, the Bangsaphan Guesthouse and Tae’s Restaurant.

Beach of Koh Talu

Koh Talu Island Resort

The major attraction at Bangsaphan is the island, Koh Talu. It does not have the quality of beach that you can find at Ban Krut but the island alone more than makes up for it. You can take a day trip snorkelling or diving or stay overnight on the island at the Koh Talu Resort. Bangsaphan also has a couple of local waterfalls and a few local beaches futher south and north at Bo Tong Lang. The town is much bigger than the village at Ban Krut and a better place to go for shopping although what’s available is definitely limited when compared to the likes of Hua Hin. There are a couple of local markets and a lot more shops and banks than Ban Krut.

of Thailand

AND THE ONGOING CONFLICT BETWEEN ECONOMIC GROWTH AND PERSERVING NATURE.

T

hailand shares borders with Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Laos and Cambodia. The country’s east coast borders the Gulf of Thailand and the west coast abuts the Andaman Sea.

The country is divided into four main zones: the fertile, central plains of the Chao Phraya River; the poorer region of the 300m (985ft) high northeast plateau; the fertile valley and mountains of Northern Thailand; and the rainforested southern peninsula. The highest peak is the 2596m (8512ft) Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai province. One-fifth of Thailand is covered by monsoon forest or rainforest, and the country has an incredible array of fruit trees, bamboo and tropical hardwoods. There are 80 national parks and 32 wildlife sanctuaries, covering 13 per cent of the country. They contain more than 850 resident and migratory species of birds and dwindling numbers of tigers, leopards, elephants and Asiatic black bears. Unfortunately, attempts to stop the logging of rainforests and illegal trafficking in endangered species are fighting an uphill battle against corruption, officials only too happy to make a buck on the side, and tourists packing an exotica or two down their bags as they walk through customs. The tiger, for instance, is one of the most endangered of Thailand’s mammals but the market for tiger organs, particularly in China, is so lucrative that poaching is still a viable career option. Overdevelopment on Ko Phi Phi is starving the coral reefs of sunlight and smothering the surface in pollutants: the destruction of the reef is a micro-example of the problems occurring on a national scale, with the finger being pointed in the direction of tourism. In May 1999, protestors packed the beach where the filming of ‘The Beach’ was taking place: environmentalists were concerned that filming would destroy the delicate eco-balance of the beach. Ironically, the film was about the destruction of native cultures and environments by hordes of dropped-out, alternative life-seeking backpackers (curiously, the filmmakers were silent on the issue of hordes of filmmakers destroying delicate eco-balances). One of the main culprits according to the Alex Garland, author of the best selling novel, is Lonely Planet. Thailand’s climate is ruled by monsoons that produce three seasons in northern, north-eastern and central Thailand and two in southern Thailand. Generally the ‘dry and wet monsoon climate’ arrives sometime between May and July and lasts into November. It is followed by a dry season from November to May in which temperatures are relatively lower until February and then begin to soar from March to May.

Plastic, Not Fantastic

WHILST PLASTICS ARE USED EVERYWHERE,THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES.

W

hile I am no big fan of plastic because it is made from petroleum, it is nevertheless an unavoidable part of modern life in the our world. Therefore, it is extra

important to separate the “good” plastics from the ones that can leach harmful chemicals like BPA, BPS, phthalates, xenoestrogens, lead and antimony into food, beverages and the environment. These toxic chemicals—found in the majority of plastic, PVC and vinyl items produced today—have been linked to obesity, enlarged male breasts, earlier puberty in girls, and increased incidence of breast, prostate and other cancers. In fact, they are so toxic, these plastic additives have been banned in Europe, Canada, China, and an increasing number of cities and states in the U.S. Most of us know by now to avoid toxic, BPA-ridden plastic beverage bottles, plastic food storageware, plastic wrap and resealable (or zipper-lock) food storage bags. (If you didn’t know that, now you do!) But, plastic is everywhere, so toxins can be found in the places you might not know about, like: • • • • • • • •

BPA-free plastic bottles (BPS), the inside lining of nearly all canned food, soda and baby formulas (BPA/BPS), canning jar lids (BPA), toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes (BPA), plastic lunchboxes and toys (phthalates and lead), dental sealants and composite fillings (BPA/BPS), plastic and vinyl jewelry, purses, shoes and other fashion items (phthalates, mercury and lead), cash register receipts (BPA/BPS), and more.

Plastic Harms the Environment Plastics are not only an issue for our health, but also for the health of plants and animals everywhere. In spite of nationwide recycling efforts, we currently recycle only a measly five percent of the plastics we produce. Approximately 50 percent of our plastic waste goes to landfills (where it will sit for thousands of years due to limited oxygen and lack of microorganisms to break it down). The remaining 45 percent ends up as litter in the environment where it ultimately washes out to sea, damaging marine ecosystems and entering the food chain. For example, 42% of the rivers tested in America turned up positive for Bisphenol-A or BPA.

Plastic Pollution in the Ocean According to Greenpeace, the world produces 200 billion pounds of plastics every year. A whopping ten percent of that—or 20 billion pounds—ends up in our oceans. Of that, about seventy percent sinks (Polycarbonate, Polystyrene, and PET), causing damage to the ocean floor. The remaining 30 percent that floats (LDPE, HDPE, Polypropylene and foamed plastics) can be found all over the ocean, but eventually it all accumulates into massive, Texas-sized islands of floating trash called gyres. There are five of these enormous plastic islands floating and spiraling in the world’s oceans today. A United Nations report claims there is an average of 46,000 pieces of plastic in every square mile of ocean. Today, you can be aboard a ship thousands of miles away from land, but you will see floating plastic debris everywhere.

ENVIRONMENT

Sea birds are frequently found strangled by the plastic rings that hold six-packs of soda together, or starved by stomachs full of plastic debris.

Even in the most remote reaches of the planet, you will find plastic trash. We’ve turned our oceans into the largest landfill in the world, and we should be ashamed! The scariest part is that all those floating plastic particles act like “sponges” for waterborne contaminants such as PCBs, pesticides like DDT, herbicides, and other persistent organic pollutants. This makes floating plastics even more dangerous than they are on land. Filter-feeding marine animals ingest these plastic particles and the toxins they contain, and subsequently pass them up through the food chain, and eventually to humans. Scientists have not yet determined the full extent of the dangers posed by plastic consumption higher up the food chain, but we do know this: Fish and other sea creatures are being found with plastic in or around their bodies. In fact, forty-four percent of all seabird species, 22 percent of Cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), all sea turtles, and a growing list of fish have been found to be contaminated with these materials. One of thousands of albatrosses that died with bellies full of our plastic trash. Tiny beads of plastic look like fish eggs or other food sources, so many sea creatures simply mistake them for food.

Loggerhead sea turtles often confuse plastic bags with jellyfish, their favorite food. The effects of this are disastrous, including internal blockages, dehydration, starvation, and often, death. Sea birds are frequently found strangled by the plastic rings that hold six-packs of soda together, or starved by stomachs full of plastic debris. Other creatures meet a painful end by getting tangled up in plastic netting. Floating plastic debris also blocks the sunlight that sustains plankton and algae, and because plankton and algae are the foundation of the marine ecosystem, this has an enormous effects up the food chain. In some ocean waters, plastic outnumbers plankton by a factor of six to one. There is no feasible or affordable way to clean the plastic out of the ocean. The ocean is far too violent and vast for that. The only thing we can do is clean up the beaches once all that plastic eventually washes up on them. (And because of natural ocean cycles, it eventually will.) But if we want to really clean up our mess, the most effective, cheapest strategy is to prevent the plastic from getting there in the first place!

ENVIRONMENT

According to the EPA, toxic pollutants, including styrene,

butadiene and methanol are released into the air during the production of plastic—for all of us to inhale.

14 Ways to Avoid the Toxins in Plastic It is very possible to get most of the plastic out of your life, but it will take a little work. Start with the low hanging fruit first. Here are some suggestions for reducing both your use of plastic and your exposure to its toxins:

1.

Since plastic is found widely in processed food packaging (this includes canned foods and beverages, which have a plastic lining), the most profound thing you can do to reduce plastic toxins in your life is to change your diet to include primarily fresh, whole, unpackaged foods from the farmer’s market or food co-op.

2. Get your fresh eggs in cardboard cartons, not polystyrene.

Get your fresh meat and cheese wrapped in waxed butcher paper, instead of plastic and foam. Get your fresh milk in bottles, not plasticcoated cartons or jugs. Many stores and farmers encourage you to return the empty bottle in exchange for savings on your next full one.

3. Avoid canned foods and beverages, 4. When shopping, use reusable produce bags to hold your produce, and reusable grocery bags to carry all your items home. Here’s an easy way to always remember them.

5. Store, reheat or freeze your leftovers in glass containers instead of in plastic “tupperware” or plastic wrap

6. Use reusable glass or stainless steel water bottles to carry water with you. Also bring your own stainless steel coffee thermos to the coffee shop or office with you. Most coffee shops have no problem putting your latté in a reusable thermos.

7. Avoid disposable plastic or polystyrene dishes and utensils. 8. Replace your plastic kitchenware with items made from stainless

steel, glass, ceramic, or even silicone instead.

Plastic Pollution in the Air According to the EPA, toxic pollutants, including styrene, butadiene and methanol are released into the air during the production of plastic—for all of us to inhale. And air pollution is an ongoing byproduct of plastic products as they are made, filled, packaged and transported to consumers. According to the National Resources Defense Council: In 2006, the equivalent of 2 billion half-liter bottles of water were shipped to U.S. ports, creating thousands of tons of global warming pollution and other air pollution. In New York City alone, the transportation of bottled water from western Europe released an estimated 3,800 tons of global warming pollution into the atmosphere. In California, 18 million gallons of bottled water were shipped in from Fiji in 2006, producing about 2,500 tons of global warming pollution. And that’s just for bottled water! From creation to disposal, plastic contributes significantly to air pollution, and many of the chemicals that go into their production continue to leach out into the air and into the food and beverages they hold.

9. Replace your toothbrush with a non-toxic one. There are many choices here. Avoid plastic toothpaste tubes (and nasty chemicals too) by making your own toothpaste. 10. Always ask for BPA-free dental sealants and BPA-free composite fillings at the dentist office. If your dentist doesn’t offer it, find one that does. 11. Use cloth diapers. 12. Because children are extra susceptible to the toxins in plastics,

it is especially important to make sure your baby bottles, pacifiers, teething toys (or anything that ends up in your child’s mouth) are safe. Choose glass bottles with real rubber nipples, wood or cloth teethers, etc. (Find toxin-free baby products here)

13. Choose wood, cloth, steel and paper-based toys for your

children over plastic, whenever possible. This is especially important while your kids are still young enough to put things in their mouths. See if you can get plastic toys like Legos second hand from eBay, Craigslist or other online outlets.

14. Replace your school-age child’s plastic lunchbox with a cloth or

stainless steel one. There are many non-toxic lunchbox choices here, and most are great for adults, too! By GMOSS

FINANCIAL NEWS

Global & Asian Financial News Remember a year ago when eurozone leaders promised to “break the vicious circle” between banks and sovereign governments by allowing the eurozone’s €500bn rescue fund to bailout struggling banks instead of leaving the task to cash-strapped national treasuries?

At the time, financial markets cheered the deal because it appeared countries that were either forced into sovereign bailouts because of their faltering financial sector (like Ireland) or were near the bailout precipice (like Spain) could get significant relief by handing over responsibility for shoring up teetering banks to Brussels instead. But gradually, as the so-called “direct recapitalisation” programme has been developed, that “break” has come to look less convincing. Indeed, Olli Rehn, the EU’s economic commissioner, now refers to “diluting” the link between banks and sovereigns instead of “breaking”. The clearest sign that all sorts of sovereign strings will come attached to a direct recap from the €500bn European Stability Mechanism is a draft paper issued by the eurogroup’s secretariat outlining how the “instrument” will work. The paper is very clear about the fact that a government asking for ESM help will still have to put its own cash into banks alongside the bailout fund. There are several scenarios that could befall a Eurozone Bank in the process: • A troubled bank is below the legal limit of capital requirements of 4.5% of equity. • A Bank is above the 4.5% limit. Under the limit, the EMS would need to inject capital into the bank A bank over the limit would be asked to contribute capital alongside the EMS

EU Commissioner, Olli Rehn It may all be very complicated for many of us to understand however, the paper is littered with other, smaller ways the direct recap tool will be severely limited and burdensome on national governments. The ESM can spend no more than €50bn to €70bn on such recapitalizations, for instance, and even though it will be targeted at banks, it will come with conditions on the “general economic policies of the ESM Member concerned” – so no avoiding a troika team showing up in your national capital on a regular basis. Perhaps more importantly is the banks that are eligible for an ESM direct recap aid programme. Although the three banks that forced their countries to request EU bailout assistance were all mediumsized at best – Anglo-Irish in Ireland, Bankia in Spain, and Laiki in Cyprus – it is not clear such financial institutions would be covered.

Thai Economy is Stable The country’s economy and financial systems are stable, despite ongoing foreign capital outflow, the Bank of Thailand said on Friday. The central bank made the statement after the meeting of its Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Institution Policy Panel. The meeting agreed that the economy still has good growth potential on the back of strong economic fundamentals, even though growth was slow in the first quarter of the year, due to a decline in domestic consumption. The BoT said exports over the first four months of the year expanded better than those of other countries in Asia. However, it admitted that many small and medium enterprises (SMEs), particularly those that are labour intensive, were affected by the 300 baht wage hike policy. The meeting acknowledged that the fluctuation in capital flows, due to the possibility that the US might gradually stop implementing its quantitative easing measures, could affect the money market in the short-term. But the central bank said it had a confidence that the burgeoning economies of Asean countries would push foreign capital back into the region, including Thailand.

In terms of commercial banking, the meeting agreed that the system is stable on the back of continuing expansion in lending, especially loans for individuals and SMEs. However, the meeting was concerned over the rapid increase in household debts over the past few years, which could affect the country’s financial stability. The central bank said it would closely monitor the situation.

Airbus and Boeing jostle at Paris Schmoozefest

Talk about wide boys. If someone at this week’s Paris Air Show landed orders for a new Starship Enterprise, it would have been overlooked in the ludicrous game of one-upmanship between Airbus and Boeing as they compete for wide-body jet orders at the Le Bourget schmoozefest. Successive order announcements by the duo are, to a large extent, merely confirmation of what analysts have already pencilled in.

China’s Home Prices still Surging!

China’s economy is slowing down. But home buyers appear not to have noticed. New home prices in the world’s second largest economy rose 6 per cent year-on-year in May, according to government data.

The sales (such as Lufthansa’s order for five-score Airbus 320 family short-haul workhorses) are often agreed weeks and months before, then saved for the ritual chest-thumping on the tarmac in Paris. Even investors go through the motions. EADS shares were up just 1.7 per cent on brisk order announcements. Boeing shares were 1.6 per cent higher. There is barely a nose in it. Airbus, on home turf, trumpeted the Lufthansa order. Others included AIG leasing unit International Lease Finance Corp’s option exercise for 50 more of the fuel-efficient A320neo aircraft and leasing group Doric’s order for twenty A380 superjumbos. Investors, of course, focus more on the (cue string of adjectives) higher-margin, wide-body long-haul stuff. Here, Airbus hopes that its A350, which completed its maiden flight last week, will give Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner - newly airborne after being grounded soon after launch - a run for its money. The US manufacturer bagged an order for 10 Dreamliners from GE Capital Aviation Services, among others. With burgeoning backlogs, doomsters ask how long the hoopla of the show can last. Economic growth is hardly robust, airlines in emerging companies have only so much appetite for wide-body jetliners - and removal of the punchbowl of quantitative easing could empty Le Bourget’s corporate hospitality tents faster than any plane evacuation. The only certainty is that the duopoly of Airbus and Boeing - entrenched by their global service networks and passenger preference - is here to stay. Courtesy of The Bangkok Post.

Philippines: Peso touches One-Year Low, Equities Rebound

Most Asian markets are treading water ahead of tomorrow’s communique from the Federal Reserve. Not so in the Philippines. The Philippine peso weakened to its lowest level in more than a year against the US dollar today, dropping nearly a percent from Friday to 43.225 per US dollar. And Manila’s benchmark index, the PSEi, is up 2.50 per cent, extending a string of gains over three sessions to more than 5 percent.

Fast Asia open - waiting on the Fed Asian markets may not do much today as traders wait for the US Federal Reserve’s two day meeting to conclude June 19. This Fed session could mark the beginning of the end of the monetary stimulus that had sent cash flooding into this region.

Le Mans 24 Hours Race 90 Years Anniversary ON JUNE 22nd, THE LE MANS 24 HOURS RACE TOOK PLACE –

T

A GRUELING MATERIAL SLAUGHTER.

he most famous endurance race in the world, marked by sportsmanship and quest for performance, has told an heroic chapter of automobile history since 1923. The 24 Hours of Le Mans (French: 24 Heures du Mans) is the world’s oldest active sports car race in endurance racing,[1] held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, France. Commonly known as the Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency, race teams have to balance speed against the cars’ ability to run for 24 hours without sustaining mechanical damage to the car and manage the cars’ consumables, primarily fuel, tyres and braking materials. The endurance of the drivers is likewise tested as drivers frequently spend stints of over two hours behind the wheel before stopping in the pits and allowing a relief driver to take over the driving duties. Drivers then grab what food and rest they can before returning to drive another stint. Today it is mandated that three drivers share each competing vehicle. The circuit on which the 24 Hours of Le Mans is run is named the Circuit de la Sarthe (Circuit of the Sarthe), after the department that Le Mans is within. It consists of both permanent track and public roads that are temporarily closed for the race. Since 1923, the track has been extensively modified, mostly for safety reasons, and currently is 13.629 km in length. Although it initially entered the town of Le Mans, the track was cut short in order to better protect spectators. On the 6km long straight , Peugeot set a new track record with a top speed of 406 kmh ! For the new decade, the race took a turn towards more extreme speeds and automotive designs. These extreme speeds led to the replacement of the typical standing Le Mans start with a rolling Indianapolis start. Although production-based cars still raced, they were now in the lower classes while purpose-built sportscars became the norm. The Porsche 917, 935, and 936 were dominant throughout the decade.

At the end of 2005, after five overall victories for the R8, and six to its V8 turbo engine, Audi took on a new challenge by introducing a diesel engined prototype known as the R10 TDI. Although not the first diesel to race, it was the first to win at Le Mans. This era saw other alternative fuel sources being used, including bio-ethanol, while Peugeot decided to follow Audi’s lead and also pursue a diesel entry in 2007 with their 908 HDi FAP. In 2013, this mythical race which has seen the most beautiful duels of manufacturers and drivers of the legend, will celebrate its 90th anniversary.

Top seller in Thailand Not a prestige model anymore as roads are widely populated with the Fortuner which in return, any Real estate agency must have. Not very economic as far as fuel consumption is concerned. Stiff ride at low speeds with the one piece life rear axle.

most popular Por sche model on the Thai market presently although Por sche is more known for their super spor ts car s. The Cayenne is available with a number of power plants ranging from gasoline, diesel to hybrid. Prices range from Bt8.8 million for the Cayenne standard to Bt17.35 million for the Cayenne Turbo, which has a 500-hor sepower engine and a top speed of 278km/h. Even the Cayenne Hybrid, with its 380-hor sepower engine, can reach a top speed of 258km/h. BMW and Volvo build mellower and more affordable ver sions of luxur y SUV´s but never theless ver y desirable and maybe even a bit sexier than the Porsche. Whereas Mercedes Benz is dragging their legs behind a bit after the G Modell, they announced a super SUV to be released in 2025 and driven by Hydrogen fuel.

TIPS

THAI LEGAL

Partnerships DOING BUSINESS WITH YOUR PARTNER.

L

ets reflect into the reasons you moved to Thailand. Some of us wanted to escape from the daily stress of the job, an unfortunate family situation, maybe even a trip to remember and put some excitement back into an otherwise less exciting life. For whatever reason, you may not have considered running a business or creating an income in Thailand. As a single person you may have found a partnership with a Thai local. This may have changed your life. You may want to come back to Thailand more frequently. Perhaps you were 29, 39, or 59 when you decided it was the right time come to Thailand for a long stay. 90-day tourist visas are ok, but time passes quickly when you are having fun. Time passes quick and you needed to re-do your visa which sometimes is a pain as you need to travel abroad. On Google you can read all about “doing business in Thailand”. There are a lot of rules and regulations, plus restrictions for foreigners, to do business in Thailand. One thing appears to be clear, it’s easier to do business if you have a Thai partner. Who could be your partner? Who do you know? Who could you trust? Why not your girlfriend? What a brilliant idea! You are not trying to build an empire to launch an IPO on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. We just want to be able to live conveniently and not have to tap into our cash reserves. Thailand recognizes all the traditional forms of business organization or sole-proprietorships, partnerships and corporations. Thais frequently refer to these forms as juristic persons. In traditional business “empire” thinking, the selection of the appropriate juristic person is driven principally by income tax and legal liability considerations. While that is still somewhat true in Thailand, Thai law provides for both general partnerships and limited partnerships, they are simpler to set up than a corporation because they are essentially a contract between partners. However, to be able to do most things, you will likely need to register the partnership or the company. That’s for the Immigration and the Work Permit issues. If you are a limited partner with a more than 50% ownership or you are a managing partner, then the business is covered under the Foreign Business Act (FBA) and all the restrictions on what business you can do, apply. There are many rules and regulations in Thailand, such as license to do something (even if not prohibited under the FBA), import/ export restrictions, various taxes that need to paid and perhaps collected. Partnerships do not provide any insulation to the consequences that usually follow these complications. Partnerships are not very popular in Thailand as in some other western countries whose citizens come to Thailand to live and maybe do business.

Back to the 20’s To celebrate the upcoming release of The Great Gatsby, the hotly anticipated film based in 1920s New York City, we thought we would show you how to capture the elegant look of an era that has stood the test of time. It’s time revisit the decadent Art Deco style of the 20’s this Summer.

The Great Gatsby Director: Baz Luhrmann Starring: Leonardo di Caprio, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan The story follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blueblooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

MOVIE REVIEW Dolphin Tale (2011)

By Zara A.

nspired by a true story, the incredible film, Dolphin Tale, starts with Sawyer (played by Nathan Gamble). Sawyer is a young boy who finds, Winter, the dolphin who washes up on the shore tangled in fisherman’s nets. Winter’s tail is so severely injured that it has to be taken off. With his new friends at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, Sawyer tries to help Winter learn to swim again and develops a very special bond with this unique animal. There are many threads to this story, all are moving, humorous and well composed. Overall, Dolphin Tale is a great movie for the whole family to enjoy. Dolphin Tale was directed by Charles Martin Smith and also stars, Harry Connick, Jr., Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson and Morgan Freeman.

The Cure, Greatest Hits (2001)

remember when my mother bought The Cure’s Greatest Hits collection. She told me that whilst she thought that they were definitely “a little different and offbeat”, she loved their music, the pop and bluesy trumpets and saxophones, the beats, the piano, guitar, singing and general instrumental quirkiness. After listening to this album, I now agree. The Cure, was originally a high-school band from Southern England called “Easy Cure” and begun writing songs straight away when they became a group in 1976. “Easy Cure” had an ever growing fan base and were signed on to Chris Parry’s new Fiction label, renaming themselves The Cure and saying goodbye to one of the original band members. Over the years The Cure had numerous line-up changes and the only original band member to stay on was Robert Smith. Today the group is performing worldwide. The Cure’s Greatest Hits carries a range of hit singles as well as two new songs. The Cure play dark, gloomy music and light pop music as well as songs that merge between these styles, contributing to their individual sound. They are a band that uses a small amount of technology to their advantage, enhancing, (rather than altering) the music they create. Their fantastic music, cheeky lyrics and catchy tunes makes you feel like you’re at a great party and most definitely dancing. By Zara A.

aptain Blake shoved Simon through a doorway under the helm and locked the latch behind them. Simon found himself in

a small room with framed portraits and maps nailed to the walls. In the centre of the room was a table covered in more maps and open scrolls. And in front of a cupboard, there was a large telescope, far bigger than any Simon had peered through the day before. In the opposite corner, a decorative sword was propped up. Simon decided this was what a pirate’s office looked like. “So,” said Captain Blake. “I need your final answer, do you want to stay?” This time Simon did not hesitate to say yes. The Captain rubbed his hands together with excitement. “Now - the quest! Allow me to fill you in,” Simon’s mind reeled, he had almost forgotten about the quest. “I am looking for the Sword of Stars,” said Captain Blake. “What’s that?” said Simon. “The Sword of Stars,” The Captain paused. “It is best to start from the beginning. For centuries my ancestors have been captains of this ship,” The Captain waved an idle hand to the portraits. “One of my ancestors was a wizard,” Simon’s eyes widened as he thought, the Captain is related to a wizard?! “He created the ship,” Captain Blake continued. “Because he thought the boat an amazing vessel that could store lots of magic and so he made the Ship of Silver Stars, but not just that, the boat had a partner, the Sword of Silver Stars, I call it the Sword of Stars.

“The wizard’s brother was jealous and challenged his brother for the ship. The wizard did not wish to duel his non-magic brother and as a compromise the wizard kept the sword and his brother took the ship. The brother became a pirate and collected a lot of gold on many voyages whilst the wizard and the sword vanished. “It was not until after the wizard’s brother passed away, that the wizard returned to reclaim his ship. “When the wizard saw that his nephew was captain, he lost his sanity. In the end the new captain fought the wizard and won the sword. “For many years the Sword of Stars was kept on a wall in this very room until my grandfather was captain. He was a gentle, trusting man (something he inherited from his mother). His trust however, led him to be robbed. It happened in the darkness of a stormy night and was taken before my grandfather even knew there were intruders. Since then, no one has seen the sword. Simon, our quest is to find the Sword of Stars and reunite it with the ship,” “How will we find it?” “A little bit of luck, skill and brilliant observation. You’ll need to learn a little piracy too, I have a new set of pirate clothes for you, but wearing them doesn’t mean anything if you can’t swing a sword like a master or tie a decent sailor’s knot,” Simon took the clothes from Captain Blake. There were brown pants, a belt with a sheath for a dagger, a white shirt, blue bandana and shiny black boots. “Thank you, but how will I learn how to be a pirate?” said Simon. “Don’t worry, we will teach you.” Captain Blake smiled. “I’m sure you’ll be a natural.”

FICTION “Land ahoy, land ahoy!” They heard a pirate call. Simon followed the Captain out of the room and up to the helm. From there he could see the entire ship. Simon watched Captain Blake prove himself as the captain he claimed to be, by directing his men so that they could reach the land. And the crew in turn proved themselves as the seafarers they were as they neared the lush, mountainous island. “Good morning Simon,” Said Violet. She was smiling and standing beside him in similar clothing to his with a red bandana. “Amazing, isn’t it?” she said. Simon just nodded, speechless. About an hour or so later, they reached the island and the Captain took Simon and Violet into the jungle along with thirty of his crew. “Now remember,” said the Captain before they went in. “Be respectful.” Simon walked at the front behind Sir Blithe and Captain Blake. For a crew that revelled in laughter and chatter they were an awfully quiet bunch as they pressed through the vines and trees. It made Simon wonder if snakes or lions were poised amongst the greenery and he crossed his fingers that they didn’t run into any beastly (or poisonous) carnivores. The Captain led them up and down a rocky hill and into a clearing that suggested people had been there recently. Captain Blake was not alarmed but directed them around the space and back into the jungle. Then something zipped through the bushes and Simon froze causing Violet to knock into him. There was another zip. Everyone halted. A ghostly white woman wrapped in dyed light blue cloths with leaves littered in her hair, stood before them and stared with unblinking eyes. The Captain descended to his knees and bowed low before her, his hands crossed over his chest. All followed the Captain’s lead and bowed. Then the woman pulled a single leaf from her wispy hair and held it over her chest. Captain Blake and the woman nodded to one another. The woman turned to the trees and in a white flash she zipped back into the jungle and out of sight. Later, the pirates that had entered the jungle, exited with full crates of exotic fruits and roots. They also had pails of fresh spring water for drinking. On the shore, the crew had collected pipis for fish bait and even some crabs for dinner that night. They stayed ashore a while longer, bathing in the shallow water and then they raised the sails and left in the night. Simon asked Skinny Legs and Hilden why they did not just put the anchor down overnight and maybe light a fire. “The island belongs to the Ghost People,” said Hilden.

“Only decades of respect and good relations has allowed us to visit up to three times a year. The leaf that woman pulled from her hair is a symbol of acceptance. But at night, the shore is not to be touched.” “Spooky things can happen there at night.” Skinny Legs added. The temperature dropped as the boat picked up speed and Simon shivered all over. “Come with me,” said Hilden and he took Simon under the decks to a wide space filled with hanging hammocks. “This is where the crew sleep,” said Hilden. “You’ll find that it warmer down here.” Hilden left Simon by some cushions on the floor. Simon sat down and soon after, another pirate sunk down next to him, silently becoming comfortable. Out of the corner of his eye Simon saw the pirate pull their bandana loose and let rich, dark hair ripple and fall down their back. Simon hid his surprise, realising that this pirate was a woman. The only other he’d seen on the ship besides Cook. “Hi,” she said. “Hello,” said Simon. “Chilly night - isn’t it?” Simon nodded. She smiled kindly and Simon was compelled to utter the question that had been rolling around his mind. “Where, where are we?” he asked her. “At sea,” she answered. “No, I mean…Where are we on a world map?” Simon asked. The female pirate exhaled deeply. “We’re not on a world map that you would have seen where you have come from,” she said. Her voice had a sing-song rhythm and washed through Simon like hot chocolate. “We’re in a patch of sea,” she continued. “All of us, pirates, the Ghost People - we are all tucked in this patch of sea like buried fossils, in a place that is both inaccessible and inescapable by traditional means. You came through the whirlpool but if you had been sailing you would not have found this place. “It’s like magic has been forced to this small patch of sea or else peril. I don’t believe it was always like that, but it has been for as long as I’ve known. Some of us, from this place, have ventured into your world and tried to fit in. But trying to blend in with a crowd oblivious to magic is tough. So most just stay here and life goes on…,” It was all so strange and yet Simon believed it to be true. “I’m Clara, by the way. It’s nice to have you on board Simon.” Clara stood up gracefully and stretched her arms reminding Simon of a cat. Clara looked back at Simon, winked, and strolled away. To Be Continued… By Zara A.

Healthy Breakfast Recipes

CHALLENGE RATE SCALE: 1/5 = easy and quick 2/5= simple 3/5= simple but takes effort/time 4/5= challenging 5/5=difficult and/or time consuming

Sometimes healthy breakfasts can become monotonous, but here are two healthy recipes that are both simple and tasty and will certainly mix things up…

Tip: Use organic ingredients where possible as it is tastier, better for our health and the earth. Each ingredient that I have labeled organic has previously been found in Hua Hin as organic. Biodynamic, unsprayed, chemical-free and wild-crafted, are also good choices.

Savoury Egg Toast

Challenge Rate: 2/5 Preparation usually takes up to 25 minutes. Cooking time depends on your stove, fry pan and heat management.

Serves: 4 The cooking process is much like cooking French Toast, except this one uses my family’s healthy and savoury egg mixture. It is extremely delicious and a great way to start the day. You can also use the mix to make omelets or scrambled eggs.

Ingredients: • • • Method: Whisk the eggs together with salt and pepper, then add • • in chilli, parmesan cheese, parsley, (basil, oregano and • shallots, if you are using them) into a large bowl and • mix well. Start heating the fry pan on the stove on low to medium heat. Pour enough olive oil to cover the base of the pan and allow pan to continue heating. Dip two slices of bread into the egg mix so that they are well covered in the egg mix then raise them above the bowl and allow them to drip for a moment. With the stove on medium heat, place the bread slices dripped in egg on the pan. Using a fork to drain excess egg, make sure that each slice has a fair spread of all ingredients covering it. Allow the bread to sit on the pan until crispy and then flip the slices over and cook the other side of the bread. You may need to add more oil between flipping the slices and between each batch. Once the other side is cooked you may repeat the process with the rest of the bread. Serve two slices of bread per person as it is or with your favourite sauce and other condiments if desired. How to tell if the bread is cooked through: Create a few slits with the corner of your spatula to see if the bread is dry in the middle, if not, allow it to cook for another minute or two. This technique also helps the bread to cook through.

Optional ingredients:

9-10 medium organic free-range eggs • Fresh basil 2-3 chillies, finely sliced • Fresh oregano 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese • 2 stems of chopped A good handful of fresh chopped parsley shallots Sea salt and pepper to season 8+ slices of bread Organic extra virgin cold pressed olive oil

Bircher Muesli

Challenge Rate: 1/5

Method:

Ingredients: • 1 ½ cups of organic rolled oats • 1 cup of organic yoghurt • 1 cup of pure fruit juice

Serves 4

Bircher Muesli is easy, extremely filling and definitely a healthy breakfast option that is good to have when you have a busy morning ahead of you. You will need to prepare it the night before you eat it and only need three ingredients…

Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl and then cover so that the bowl is sealed. Place in the fridge overnight and eat the next morning with fresh fruit (sliced banana, berries, passion fruit) and seeds and/or nuts. Recommendation: Experiment with different fruit juices of your choice and see which ones you like. I personally like to make my Bircher Muesli with orange, pineapple or apple juice.

EDUCATION IN HUA HIN HUA HIN SCHOOLS AND EDUCATIONAL CENTERS

ducation in Hua Hin is provided by various schools, colleges, universities, and language centres, as well as a few private individuals. While Hua Hin does not quite have

the same choice and quality of educational institutions compared with Bangkok and some other countries, there are certainly many reasonable schools around town that have either Thai or international curriculums. With the increasing importance of the English language, schools and universities are realising the value and benefits of teaching at least some English-based courses. There are many expats in Hua Hin with children of varying ages, who understandably need quality educational establishments with a high standard of teaching that we are accustomed to in the West, as well as having the chance to gain internationally recognised and respected qualifications. Foreign residents usually want to send their children to schools that teach subjects in English or their native language, which has created a high demand in the local area that is not fully satisfied. Many schools employ native English speakers, but there is on-going criticism about the standards of teaching. Teachers are often not qualified although they are native speakers, they don’t have a proper teaching education, stay in Thailand for a short time and move on. The problem remains, how do you choose a prospective nursery, school or university in Hua Hin and what conditions and calibre of education can you expect? Important criteria include the school’s curriculum (it could be mainly Thai or international), the teaching methods, range and availability of courses, any associated costs and fees, the location, class sizes, as well as its overall reputation. You might be wise to visit the school at various times especially when classes are being held and talk with the teachers and as many others as possible such as existing parents.

There are comprehensive resources on the Internet about the local schools and universities, as well discussions on local forums. Many residents in Hua Hin have already gone through the complicated process of finding the right place for themselves and their children. Our guide gives you an overview of what’s available in Hua Hin, with contact details for some of the well known and popular establishments.

The Thai Education System The Thai education system is focused on the Thai curriculum and subjects, but there have been moves to incorporate English more widely. However, the situation is not satisfactory as Thai teachers are often not qualified to teach in 2 languages. The overall English language level is poor. Education in Thailand is categorised into basic and higher levels. A free basic education of twelve years is guaranteed to all Thai citizens as set out in the Thai constitution, but only nine years of attendance is compulsory. The municipal government runs the majority of schools but parents may be asked to contribute towards some costs and there are likely to be additional fees for essentials such as school uniforms, books and meals. Some schools however do provide a free lunch and other items such as school bags. Since funding is a big issue for Thai schools, many of them are run by private enterprise and charitable or religious organisations such as the Silesian School through the Catholic church. Such schools would be able to provide educational programmes based on foreign curriculums (such as British or American) and are usually approved by the Thai Education Ministry. These tend to be the schools favoured by expatriates, however the annual costs and fees may be substantially higher than at the state-run schools and a Thai liberal system of overpopulating classes is still in place although the Thai ministry of education limits class sizes to 21 pupils, school do not respect this.

Learning Thai WHEN IN ROME DO AS THE ROMANS DO.

L

earning to speak Thai is a very rewarding experience and immensely useful for those staying in Thailand for any length of time. It can be a beneficial skill to have and helps

break the ice in many situations. It’s possible to learn Thai at the various language schools mentioned earlier such as Insight English, The Learning Centre and The Language Centre. Depending on your ability and aspirations, the schools will be able to recommend a course appropriate to your needs and experience. It’s also quite possible to learn the basics independently using phrasebooks and online resources. Many people assume that Thai is very hard to learn because it’s so unlike European languages and has what seems like a very peculiar alphabet. With a little perseverance however, it’s possible to pick up the basic phrases quite quickly and start to appreciate how the language works. Thais usually appreciate the effort you’ve made to speak their language no matter how few words you can manage, and seem quite impressed when you’re able to have a real conversation. The best advice is to practice a lot and try to speak some Thai every day. Once you’ve mastered the basics it can be good fun learning to read and write Thai, which comes in handy especially in remote places where English is not widely understood. In most Thai phrasebooks a system of transliteration is used to write Thai using the standard Latin alphabet. Spelling in English is not always applied consistently either, for example road signs seem to use many different spellings for the same place name. Petkasem – Petschkasem . Petch Kasem etc. The Thai alphabet comprises forty-four consonants and thirty-two vowels.

The vowels are further split into both short and long variants, so there are effectively only sixteen basic vowel sounds to learn. In written form, the vowels can be placed before, after, above or below the consonants or a combination of those, and even though it appears confusing at first it soon becomes second nature when reading Thai. It gives a great sense of achievement when you’re able to read menus, road signs, and even the subtitles on TV with a little practice! Even though there are 44 consonants in Thai, they only represent around twenty-one unique sounds because some consonants have almost identical pronunciation. Thai is a tonal language and has five tones (it could be worse, for example Vietnamese and Cantonese have six tones), and the various tone marks may be included (but not always) in written text to indicate a high, middle, low, rising or falling tone. Tone markers are not always present however, because the tones can also be determined by the class of the consonant (either high, medium or low), which makes it possible to deduce the implied tone without them. Reading Thai is perhaps easier than writing it, because it’s usually possible to figure out the word and meaning based on the context, without having to know too much about the complicated tone rules. For some essential basic phrases and more detailed information about learning Thai we recommend that you pick up a phrasebook and dictionary, and browse the comprehensive guides and videos that are available on the Internet. There are also discussions in our language forums about Thai and how to learn it. Ultimately, it reaps dividends to speak Thai with local people, and you’re guaranteed to have lots of fun along the way!

CREATING A DREAM COME TRUE. t has always been a dream of Patravadi Mejudhon to teach children. Give them her and other´s experiences of life. Contribute toward our youth becoming good human beings,

giving more than expecting to receive and contributing to happiness and success, using true Buddhism guidelines and Philosophy. The famous Thai actress Patravadi Mejudhon, who is the founder of Patravadi Theatre - Bangkok´s first open-air theatre, is a pioneer in Thailand´s performing arts scene who holds high international standard and maintains Thailand cultural roots. Patravadi Theatre has a reputation for breaking traditions, accompanying old folk adventures with rock music, or illustrates Buddhist suffering from the dance floor of a discotheque. Patravadi Mejudhon is a pioneer in the world of Thai theatre, an awardwinning actress in movies, television, stage as well as an acclaimed director and playwright. Her latest project, Vic Hua Hin, is a large scale comprehensive arts complex that houses the Patravadi High School Hua Hin The Patravadi Elementary School, educational centres that teach normal Thai curriculum combined with English tutoring and most importantly, with a creative approach encouraging students to actively participate in their educational daily teaching. With the High School being an instant success, she went a step further and built an Elementary School for kids from 3 – 9 years of age, limiting strictly class sizes to no more than 20 students. APPROACH took advantage of the seldom occasion of chatting for more than 1 hour with Khun Lek as she is charismatically called to exchange views on Kids & Education. Having a Cuppa at the Vic Hua Hin cafeteria, Khun Lek explained her philosophy and her endeavour to equip modern youth with traditional tutoring incorporating respect and kindness to everything surrounding us. “Being respectful, humble and kind to others will automatically reciprocate this behaviour to you.”

In addition to the Elementary & High School programmes, Patravadi has boarding facilities for both school systems. Up to 60 kids can be boarded at the school campus. Kids will not only learn to engage in team work but will be taught to respect others and treat one another with kindness and a helping hand. Already in school, the smaller kids have to queue up for their mid-day lunch, wait till others have carried their lunch to the table and rinse their plates before retiring to a well-earned recess. Parents will be closely integrated in the school year activities and tutoring. Unlike some other teaching systems, Patravadi is looking for a close relationship to parents, their input and opinion. Delivering responsible, talented and motivated youngsters to a future society is the target of both Patravadi schools. In addition to the High School , a Creative Arts faculty on University level will be added to the existing campus this year. This exemplary system has unfortunately not found its equal in many educational systems yet but sets the milestones out for positive change. Change is what we need. In a present world we live in, change can only be positive as we cannot allow ourselves to sink any deeper with regard to respect for fellow human beings as we observe the killings going on in other countries that seems to be spreading. Consider Khun Patravadi to be a fore rider of advanced education.

REVIEW

Buffet at it’s Best By Ralph Ruijs OUR ROYAL BEACH TOWN IS HOME TO ALL THE MAJOR HOTEL BRANDS KNOWN UNDER THE SUN. THE CENTARA GRAND BEACH RESORT & VILLAS OFFER AN ELABORATE BUFFET OF PREMIUM FRENCH DELICASIES.

W

hen we arrived at the Centara Grand, we were welcomed by the new Food & Beverage Manager, Albert-Jan van Beusekom. Albert-Jan has been with the hotel for some time and has always taken a special interest in the buffet because of its wide selection of French cuisine and the high quality and freshness of the food. “For Hua Hin this buffet is simply unique, mainly because we offer quality products. For example the imported AOC Cheese selection is one of the specialties in which we take high pride.” On his recommendation we started our evening with King Crab from Alaska. In contrary to normal crabs, the King Crab has way larger legs and claws, resulting in more meat to enjoy. Furthermore, this crab has a richer flavour and firmer structure than your everyday crab. Off course a crab never walks alone, so it was accompanied on my plate by Alaskan salmon and lobster. In addition, to accompany my crustacean friends, I had a bowl of Lobster Bisque, which is a delicious French soup made out of the lobster shells. With the seafood we drank one of the white house wines, a Sauvignon Blanc from Chili, which complimented the food taste very well. After the festivities from the sea, we went ashore to sample the wide array of cold-cuts on display. Delicious salami’s and smoked ham together with some rocket salad found a way to our plates and some French cheeses like Reblochon as well, knowing that cheese “closes the stomach” and is to be eaten at the end of the meal. However they are such a good match with the French cold-cuts, so we made an exception. Moreover our waiter opened another house wine, a Merlot also from Chili, which was a good anticipation for the main courses to come. Before I indulged myself in the meat section, where chefs prepare your lamb chop or tenderloin exactly the way you want it, I made a stop at the Foie Gras department. Foie Gras is a popular and well-known delicacy in French cuisine. Its flavour is described as rich, buttery, and delicate, unlike that of an ordinary duck or goose liver. Also this dish is hard to come by in most restaurants. The quality offered is unique to the Centara. In addition to this rich French delicacy, I also took a bite from the escargots and frog legs. These specialities take me back to my childhood when we used to go on holiday to France every summer. In France, the barbeque was filled with frog legs and escargots marinated in garlic and Burgundy herbs and Centara brought back those good memories at this buffet. Now it was time for tender lamb chops. Personally I like my chops “medium-rare”, but I always say to the chef “rare” because then you get it “medium-rare”. However here you get it like you order it and we enjoyed actually more than one piece of lamb and a juicy tenderloin to close the stomach. For dessert, apart from a widest selection of puddings tarts and every imaginable sweet, some of us chose crème brûlée, which never hurts together with a nice cappuccino. All in all this was an exquisite buffet dining experience, the quality and freshness never ceases to amaze me. The French Buffet on Saturday at the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin starts at 7 pm and is a genuine piece of Burgundy Cuisine available in Hua Hin that is definitely worth dining at.

Number 1 and 2 Confirm for Dubai World number one Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have confirmed they will take part in the 25th Dubai Desert Classic in 2014. Both players did not compete at this year’s event. Woods and McIlroy opted to start their season at Abu Dhabi Championship, where they performed particularly poorly. However, Woods has twice won the Dubai Desert Classic and McIlroy notched his first professional victory there when he was just 19, which is probably a good omen. Woods says he has “really good memories” of playing in the 2.5-million dollar tournament, which starts next January. McIlroy said he was looking forward to the event, adding that it “will be fun to be part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the tournament.”

Possible Disqualification

During Tiger Woods’ Saturday round, his third shot into the par 5 fifteenth hole hit the flagstick and rolled back into the water. After evaluating his options for taking a drop (with a one-stroke penalty), Tiger incorrectly dropped his ball too far behind the location from which he took his original shot. The Masters Rules Committee decided to re-examine Tiger’s actions on the 15th hole, and subsequently assessed an additional two-stroke penalty. Under the long-standing Rules of Golf (and accepted traditions), Tiger would have been disqualified because he signed an incorrect scorecard (that is, one not including the two-stroke penalty) at the end of his round.

he sport progressed greatly during this era as a direct result of the king’s personal interest in the sport. The country was at peace and Muay Thai functioned as a means of physical exercise, self-defense, recreation, and personal advancement. Furthermore masters of the art began teaching in training camps where students were provided with food and shelter. Trainees would be treated as one family and it was customary for students to adopt the camp’s name as their own surname. Furthermore scouts would be sent by the royal family to organize matches between different camps. The Muay Thai technique makes use of the entire body with kicks, elbows and knee strikes giving it the name ‘the Art of Eight Limbs’. Professional fighters undergo such rigorous training and fighting schedules - some fighting almost every other week – that their careers in the ring are relatively short before they progress to become instructors. Typically Thai people from lower economic backgrounds; the fight money is a means of financial support for their families. Long- held superstition that a woman’s presence would jinx a wrestler’s skills traditionally kept Muay Thai a male-only sport, however many training camps in Thailand now accept women. Female matches rarely pull in a large crowd, but the low turnout doesn’t deter the contenders.

Wimbledon THE MOST FAMOUS AND PRESTEGIOUS TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP.

T

he Championships,Wimbledon,The Wimbledon Championships or simply Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and widely considered the most prestigeous. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (Majors), the others being the Australian Open, French Open (Roland Garros) and US Open. Wimbledon is the only Major still played on grass, the game’s original surface, which gave the game its original name of “lawn tennis”. The tournament takes place over two weeks in late June and early July, culminating with the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Final, scheduled for the second Saturday and Sunday respectively. Each year five major events are contested, as well as four junior events and three invitational events. The hard court (Plexicushion) Australian Open and clay court French Open precede Wimbledon in the year, and the hard court (DecoTurf) US Open follows. For men, the grass court Queen’s Club Championships, also in London, and the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, serve as warm-up events; for women, the Aegon Classic in Birmingham and two joint events, the Topshelf Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands and the Eastbourne International. Wimbledon traditions include a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream by the spectators and Royal patronage. The tournament is also notable for the absence of sponsor advertising around the courts. In 2009, Wimbledon’s Centre Court was fitted with a retractable roof to lessen the loss of playing time due to rain.

2012 Winners Men Single - Roger Federer Women Single – Serena Williams Men Doubles – Jonathan Marray and Frederic Nielssen Women Doubles – Serena and Venus Williams Mixed Doubles – Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond

Matches in the Gentlemen’s Singles and Gentlemen’s Doubles are best-of-five sets, in all other events are bestof-three sets. A tiebreak game is played if the score reaches 6–6 in any set except the fifth (in a five-set match) or the third (in a three-set match), in which case a two-game lead must be reached. All events are single-elimination tournaments, except for the Gentlemen’s, Senior Gentlemen’s and the Ladies’ Invitation Doubles, which are round-robin tournaments. On 24 April 2012, it was announced that the total prize money offered at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships would be £16,060,000, an increase of 10.0% from 2011. The bulk of the increases were given to players losing in earlier rounds. This move was in response to the growing angst among lower-ranked players concerning the inadequacy of their pay. Then 68th ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky, member of the ATP Player Council, was among the most vocal in the push for higher pay for players who bow out in the earlier rounds. In an interview Stakhovsky intimates that it is not uncommon for lower-ranked players to be in the negative, for certain tour events, if their results weren’t stellar. This issue gained the attention of the men’s “big four”—Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray—as well as the Championships. Wimbledon can be watched in Thailand on TRUE Sport Channels. >After the matches, replays usually take place the same day and following days and weeks.

A Mini Wimbledon - US Open and All Thailand Championships takes place at the Palm Hills Country Club in Hua Hin. A Multi Culti gathering of senior Champions, singles, doubles and mixed doubles takes place on Mondays from 4 pm onwards. Challenging guests are most welcome to join not only tennis players but also Badminton, Table Tennis and Squash. Small contributions are required towards the court fees. Prize money is to be agreed upon before the match. The receiving team is to umpire during the matches. Disputes are to be regulated and judged upon after the matches whilst enjoying a cold beer. Simple Health Tips 1) Go Herbal

6) Get a Massage

2) Rub Your Temples

7) Try Tea Tree Oil

For varicose veins, try horse chestnut, an herbal extract that’s been shown in studies to strengthen veins and reduce swelling. The herb is also available in topical creams, though there’s not as much evidence for these.

Tame tension headaches by rubbing peppermint oil, Tiger Balm, or white flower oil into your temples. All three remedies contain menthol, which has analgesic properties.

3) Enjoy Ginger

The volatile oils in ginger have long made it a useful herbal remedy for nasal and chest congestion. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over a 1-inch piece of peeled, grated ginger; steep for 10 minutes; and strain. Add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the water and drink as needed.

4) Sniff Rosemary

According to some research, catching a whiff of this aromatic herb may increase alertness and improve memory. To stay sharp, try smelling fresh rosemary or inhaling the scent of rosemary essential oil before a test or meeting.

5) Eat Bananas

People whose diets are rich in potassium may be less prone to high blood pressure. Besides reducing sodium and taking other hearthealthy steps, eat potassium-packed picks such as bananas, cantaloupe, and oranges.

Certain trigger points -- spots of tension in musculoskeletal tissue -can cause back pain. Ask a massage therapist or other body worker who specializes in myofascial release or neuromuscular therapy to focus on these points during a massage.

For athlete’s foot, reach for tea tree oil, an extract of the leaves of an Australian tree. It appears to have antiseptic properties and may work as well as or better than over-the-counter antifungal products. Apply a light coating of the oil to affected areas two to three times a day; continue for a week or two after symptoms disappear.

8) Eat Avocados

For dry skin, incorporate more avocados into your diet. They’re rich in monounsaturated fat and vitamin E, both of which promote healthy skin. Try them on salads and sandwiches, and even in smoothies.

9) Call a Friend

Keeping your social networks alive and well may help benefit your ticker over the long term. Social support has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, and people who do have heart attacks fare better if they are socially connected.

10) Get a Good Pair of Sneakers

Is your energy lagging? Though it may be the last thing you feel like doing when you’re tired, exercise -- even a brisk walk -- can be more effective than a nap or cup of coffee at fighting fatigue.

Genetically Modified Food HOW UNHEALTHY IS GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD REALLY? - THE STORY.

T

his article focuses on what organisms have been genetically engineered, and for what purposes. The article on genetic engineering focuses on the history and methods of genetic engineering, and on applications

of genetic engineering and of GMOs. Both articles cover much of the same ground but with different organizations (sorted by organism in this article; sorted by application in the other). There are separate articles on genetically modified crops, genetically modified food, regulation of the release of genetic modified organisms, and controversies. There are controversies around GMOs on several levels, including whether making them is ethical, whether food produced with them is safe, whether such food should be labelled and if so how, whether agricultural biotech is needed to address world hunger now or in the future, and more specifically to GM crops—intellectual property and market dynamics; environmental effects of GM crops; and GM crops’ role in industrial agricultural more generally. A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Organisms that have been genetically modified include micro-organisms such as bacteria and yeast, insects, plants, fish and mammals. GMOs are the source of genetically modified foods and are also widely used in scientific research and to produce goods other than food. The term GMO is very close to the technical legal term, ‘living modified organism’ defined in the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which regulates international trade in living GMOs (specifically, “any living organism that possesses a novel combination of genetic material obtained through the use of modern biotechnology”).

Monsanto Company was among the first to genetically modify a plant cell, along with three academic teams, which was announced in 1983, and was among the first to conduct field trials of genetically modified crops, which it did in 1987. It remained one of the top 10 U.S. chemical companies until it divested most of its chemical businesses between 1997 and 2002, through a process of mergers and spin-offs that focused the company on biotechnology. The company also formerly manufactured controversial products such as the insecticide DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange, and recombinant bovine somatotropin. Monsanto was a pioneer in applying the biotechnology industry business model to agriculture, using techniques developed by Genentech and other biotech drug companies in the late 1970s in California. In this business model, companies invest heavily in research and development, and recoup the expenses through the use and enforcement of biological patents. Monsanto’s application of this model to agriculture, along with a growing movement to create a global, uniform system of plant breeders’ rights in the 1980s, came into direct conflict with customary practices of farmers to save, reuse, share and develop plant varieties. Its seed patenting model has also been criticized as biopiracy and a threat to biodiversity. Monsanto’s role in these changes in agriculture (which include its litigation and its seed commercialization practices, its current and former agbiotech products, its lobbying of government agencies, and its history as a chemical company, have made Monsanto controversial.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

GMO Food to Stay Away From 1. Corn

One of the most prominent GMO foods, avoiding corn is a nobrainer. If you’ve watched any food documentary, you know corn is highly modified. “As many as half of all U.S. farms growing corn for Monsanto are using genetically modified corn,” and much of it is intended for human consumption. Monsanto’s GMO corn has been tied to numerous health issues, including weight gain and organ disruption.

2. Soy

Found in tofu, vegetarian products, soybean oil, soy flour, and numerous other products, soy is also modified to resist herbicides. As of now, biotech giant Monsanto still has a tight grasp on the soybean market, with approximately 90 percent of soy being genetically engineered to resist Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup. In one single year, 2006, there was 96.7 million pounds of glyphosate sprayed on soybeans alone.

3. Sugar

According to NaturalNews, genetically-modified sugar beets were introduced to the U.S. market in 2009. Like others, they’ve been modified by Monsanto to resist herbicides. Monsanto has even had USDA and court-related issues with the planting of it’s sugar beets, being ordered to remove seeds from the soil due to illegal approval.

4. Aspartame

Aspartame is a toxic additive used in numerous food products, and should be avoided for numerous reasons, including the fact that it is created with genetically modified bacteria.

5. Papayas

This one may come as a surprise to all of you tropical-fruit lovers. GMO papayas have been grown in Hawaii for consumption since 1999. Though they can’t be sold to countries in the European Union, they are welcome with open arms in the U.S. and Canada.

6. Canola

One of the most chemically altered foods in the U.S. diet, canola oil is obtained from rapeseed through a series of chemical actions.

7. Cotton

Found in cotton oil, cotton originating in India and China in particular has serious risks.

8. Dairy

Your dairy products may contain growth hormones, since as many as one-fifth of all dairy cows in America are pumped with these hormones. In fact, Monasnto’s health-hazardous rBGH has been banned in 27 countries, but is still in most US cows. If you must drink milk, buy organic.

9. Zucchini and 10. Yellow Squash

Closely related, these two squash varieties are modified to resist viruses. The dangers of some of these foods are well-known. The Bt toxin being used in GMO corn, for example, was recently detected in the blood of pregnant women and their babies. But perhaps more frightening are the risks that are still unknown. Even while these foods should be on your GMO foods list so that they are avoided, you can buy 100% organic to be safest. With little regulation and safety tests performed by the companies doing the genetic modifications themselves, we have no way of knowing for certain what risks these lab-created foods pose to us outside of what we already know. The best advice: steer clear of them altogether.

Jungle TAKING CARE OF THE NEEDY, THE ORPHANS ALONG THE THAI - BURMESE BORDER AND INSIDE MYANMAR.

A

PPROACH magazine supports and will support media wise all the endeavours and project programmes this wonderful group of volunteers who work all week at their

jobs and then set out on weekends and during holidays to remote areas on the Thai Burmese border and into Burma.

Aid We didn’t choose to be born in a country where we have easy access to supermarkets, schools and nurses. What would you do to survive? How would you feed and educate your children if you had no resources to do either? Who would you ask for help?

“We all face growing concerns about our the standards of ours schools, whether our food contains pesticides or is genetically modified and growing concerns about our health. Life can be stressful and oftentimes it can all get on top of us. But let’s forget about us. Many of us we will never have to worry about receiving basic life skills and lessons. We’ve never had to starve ourselves so that our children can eat what little food we have. We will probably never know what it is like to live with large, painful tumours and not be able to seek medical attention. Whenever we feel ill we simply go to see the doctor, and we are then seen to.”

For these people, organisations like Jungle Aid is an important and essential lifeline. With your help Jungle Aid can provide them with the knowledge, the supplies and the continued support to make a positive impact on their lives.

Yet there are thousands of people who do not have access to these basic human needs. The people Jungle Aid supports, live in remote locations on the border of Thailand and Myanmar and have extremely restricted resources. “Our primary aim is to provide them with the skills, knowledge and materials to become sustainable, independent and skilled”. Jungle Aid would like to introduce you to a few of these thousands of people. They are very real, and they need our help. They didn’t choose to live in a village where they are hundreds of miles from sources of food and medical attention.

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are all incredible ways of telling people about Jungle Aid and letting them know about all the good we are doing. Who knows, maybe some of your friends (or even the friends of your friends) will donate to our cause. If they do, it will all be because of you – high five!

‘YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE MONEY …to make it in this world!’ – wise words sang by English pop band McFly. Jungle Aid wholeheartedly agree with them – it’s not all about the money. So you might be thinking ‘Well how can I help these guys out if I don’t have any money to give?’ Let me tell you – by spreading the word, that’s how!

Here are some of the projects that Jungle Aid helps with on a voluntary basis , using the donations to buy material and medications needed for the villagers.

COMMUNITY

VILLAGE ASSESSMENT Before Jungle Aid does anything to assist the villages we compile a comprehensive evaluation of the situation in each village. We listen to the village leaders, parents and workers and ask them what they want to achieve so that we can produce a detailed plan of action. We then use this plan of action to implement solutions for each village and each time we revisit a village we update our assessment to ensure our plan is still relevant. REMOTE MEDICAL CLINIC Everyday thousands of people are denied access to basic medical attention. For some there is the long and painful walk to the nearest nurse, for others there is simply no health service that exists for them, and sometimes it is impossible for them to be treated because they do not have the required documents. During their time in the villages they have come across people who have been living with large, painful tumours, children with facial scarring due to accidents and people with cancer. Jungle Aid believes that medical support is part of our basic human right and this is why we should do everything we can to support those in need. EDUCATION AND BUSINESS Many of the people that are treated are in the situation because of poor diet, unsanitary conditions and lack of basic knowledge. Providing medical care to people is essential, but so is educating people to ensure that they can pass the knowledge onto their children so that we can break the vicious cycle. The volunteers share their knowledge with the people of the villages, whether it is to show them how to sterilise water, teach them how to cook or to show them how to take care of their teeth. Jungle Aid also helps the villages set up micro-businesses and support them so that they can earn a small amount of money to enhance their lives. Knowledge is Change!

SUSTAINABLE VILLAGES “All of our projects are designed to ensure that we provide the village with all of the tools necessary in becoming sustainable. We offer support, critical resources and knowledge to help the villages become entirely self- sufficient over time. By educating people about their health, offering medical attention and assisting them with setting up micro-businesses it is our hope that they will one day have what they need and no longer need our support. Until that day comes Jungle Aid and our supporters will be here to be their essential lifeline.”

The Rise of the

KNIGHT FRANK THAILAND CO.,LTD PUBLISHED EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ABOUT THE PROPERTY MARKET IN HUA HIN WITH REMARKABLE FINDINGS.

A

ccording to a recent survey conducted by Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co., Ltd., for the past decade, the condominium supply in Hua Hin has

been mostly comprised of 2 to 3-bedroom units. However, at present, the condominium trend has shifted to 1-bedroom units with selling prices of less than THB 2 million. Frank Khan, Head of Residential Department at Knight Frank says that most of the buyers who purchased Hua Hin condominiums use them as holiday homes, rather than for investment purposes. Recently, some buyers purchased condominiums to generate rental income; this is because there are not many hotels in Hua Hin, and thus there is a growing demand for rental condominiums for short stays from Friday to Sunday, or the long weekend. The rental market is growing quickly as Scandinavian and Russian tourists are coming to Hua Hin and renting apartments for 3 to 6 month stays. They prefer 1 or 2 bedroom apartments with full recreational facilities such as swimming pools, beach access, and tennis courts. The condominium supply in Hua Hin was plentiful during 2012, and Thais dominated the market, representing around 75% of the buyers.

This is in sharp contrast to the Pattaya market, where the target customer groups include a variety of Thais, foreigners, and professionals who work in the industrial estates of Chonburi. There are many shopping and recreational facilities in Hua Hin that serve visitors, including community malls such as Santorini, Cicada,The Venezia, and Plearnwan; Black Mountain Water Park; and Samphannam Floating Market.

Supply Trend

Knight Frank Thailand has accumulated data on the condominium supply in the Hua Hin region from 2003 to 2012 - this includes Cha-am, Hua Hin, Khao Takiab, Khao Tao, and inland areas. The accumulated condominium supply of Hua Hin by the end of 2012 was about 18,102 units, increasing by 35.2% from the end of 2011. The new condominium supply has increased sharply, with approximately 4,709 units from 15 new condominium projects being launched during 2012. Of this figure, a grand total of 3,255 units were offered during the first half of 2012, whereas a total of 1,454 units entered the market during the second half of the year.

REAL ESTATE

The beach in Hua Hin is considered to be more beautiful than the beach in Pattaya.

Cha-am was still the most popular location in the Hua Hin condo market, a trend that continues from the previous year. This was due to the availability of the land plots as well as the existence of several commercial developments that provide an extensive range of restaurants and retail outlets, making the area more convenient for residents. There was a large additional supply in the Cha-am area, with about 1,696 units, or 36% of the total number of units launched, from 4 new condominium development projects entering the market in 2012. AD Resort Hua Hin was the largest project, with 1,128 units in the Cha-am area. The emerging area in Hua Hin was found in the Inland Area, with approximately 1,424 newly launched units during 2012. The projects were developed by Sansiri, with unit selling prices of THB 1.5 to 3.5 million; however, the projects were located quite far from the beach. This was followed by the North Hua Hin and Khao Tao areas, accounting for 18% and 15% of the total units launched in 2012, respectively.

Demand Trend

The unit take-up in the Hua Hin condominium market increased in 2010, with around 1,076 units sold; in 2011, there were around 1,344 units sold. The unit take-up in 2012 was especially robust, with approximately 2,879 units sold.

The take-up rate decreased from 72% in 2010 to 45% in 2011; this was due to the condominium supply influx, with around 6,000 units launched in 2011. Knight Frank’s research indicates that the take-up rate has increased to 49%, with the total demand of around 8,906 units by the end of 2012. Statistics indicate that the historical unit take-up during the peak year of the Hua Hin condominium market was around 1,000 to 1,200 units per annum. Thus, the unit take up in 2012 was tremendously higher than the unit take-up in the peak year. Mr. Khan added that Hua Hin condominium buyers’ profiles are divided into two target groups: Thais who account for 75% of the market; and expatriates working in Bangkok and foreign retirees, including Scandinavians, Russians, and Germans, who make up the remaining 25% of the market. Thai buyers are a strong force in the Hua Hin condo market; this is due to the fact that Thais who live in Bangkok, especially the affluent ones, are looking for a second home or a holiday property near Bangkok. About 200 kilometres from the capital or a 2.5-hour drive, Hua Hin is a deservedly a popular destination, providing many interesting tourist attractions and activities. Also, the beach in Hua Hin is considered to be more beautiful than the beach in Pattaya.

REAL ESTATE

The report by Knight Frank indicated that nowadays, the market has changed. There are many medium-income earners from Bangkok who are buying condominium units in Hua Hin for weekend stays; budget condos in Hua Hin have thus sold quite well.

Pricing Trend

Due to the convenience of South Hua Hin, the resale price of condominiums in this area recorded the highest figures, with the average price of approximately THB 137,853 per square metre, as of the end of 2012. This is an increase of 6% when compared to prices of the previous year. The condominiums in Khao Takiab represented the second highest average selling price per square metre at around THB 120,050, a decrease of 1% from the previous year. The reason for this was that the 2012 project launches in this area offered budget condominiums, with lower prices compared to the previous year. The average condo selling price in the North Hua Hin area occupied the third rank, at around THB 103,798 per square metre, increasing by 3% from the previous year. The average selling price per square metre in Khao Takiab significantly decreased from the previous year to THB 74,595 per square metre, as of the end of 2012.

Outlook

The Knight Frank report forecasts that the condominium market in Hua Hin will see strong growth as SET-listed property developers and other major development firms from Bangkok launch new projects in this market next year.

The resale price of condo’s in Hua Hin is about THB 137,853 per square metre.

The target market of Hua Hin condominiums is still narrow, focusing on Thai buyers, expatriates working in Bangkok, and foreign retirees, compared to other tourist destinations such as Phuket or Pattaya, where the targets are also tourist buyers and foreign investors. The land plots for property development in prime locations, especially in the south of Hua Hin, are becoming scarce and land prices are soaring. Thus it can be expected that the future supply of condominiums will be concentrated in Cha-am and in the Inland Area, where many plots are still available for condominium projects with prices lower than that of other locations. Mr. Khan says developers should balance the supply and demand in the Hua Hin condominium market, as the target groups are not diversifiable. Developers should also be cautious if they continue to develop large numbers of units, risking oversupply and subsequently decreasing prices. The condominium supply in 2012 slowed down from 2011, with decreasing numbers of newly launched units; however, the number of projects in 2012 increased as developers launched many smaller projects with greater privacy features. Interview with a Real Estate Agent

‘ Experience is key ’

Hua Hin Property

This month, APPROACH Magazine interviews Arnold Ruijs – an active member within the community of Hua Hin and a managing partner of Hua Hin Property Co, Ltd.

What brought you to Hua Hin from Holland in the first place?

Compared to the Netherlands, Thailand has a all year round comfortable climate and the food is great. Furthermore are the people very friendly and welcomed us with open arms. In addition, the Thai economy is growing exponentially, especially the property market here in Hua Hin. So this also convinced me to make the big move here and to be part of this growth while having a smile on my face every day.

How long have you permanently lived in Hua Hin and where do you live?

In 2005 we moved permanently to Hua Hin and we have a house at the end of soi 116 just on the mountain in the White Lotus Residence. Because we live on the foot of the mountain, there is always a nice breeze and lot’s of trees which makes this area very comfortable.

Please explain why you decided to join Hua Hin Property as opposed to other Real Estate agencies?

In the past I worked together with my current partners Andy Dyett and Simon Pinnock for a long time and back then I was involved in the Banyan project and responsible for the sales. In this period I have learned that they were hard working, very professional and reliable persons. Also the A1 location of the office was in my opinion the best in Hua Hin. In Hua Hin the property business is very competitive and new agencies arise every day. That is why as a real estate agent it is imperative to differentiate ourselves from the rest. I have been in sales for many years and I pride myself in doing business in an honest way. People that come here from abroad and are planning to invest their life savings in a nice property choose for Hua Hin Property because we exude trust and honesty. We are not in the business of making a quick buck, but contributing to the positive growth and development of this royal beach town.

What social events and networking events do you like to attend and why?

I am a member of the Hua Hin Golf Society and the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin. I joined the Golf Society because I like the game of golf and it is a great way to socialize. Moreover I became a member of the Rotary because it is a nice way to make and meet friends and at the same time contribute to improve welfare of the under privileged. Living in Thailand has many obvious benefits for foreigners, however at the same time it is important to also give back to the community and the Rotary plays a big part in that. In addition I like to go to the monthly Stammtisch, I joined the MCC event and I really enjoy a game of pool with a good cigar. And off course some karaoke on Saturday night!

Do you have any hobbies you enjoy and why do you do them?

I cannot say karaoke is a real hobby, but I really like it just like fishing. Since I was young this has been a great passion of mine and I used to go to France at least once a year with friends to catch carps. My other hobbies are golfing and cooking. It’s fun and relaxing and especially golf is also a good exercise, which is important for guys my age.
