ow about this...the authorities announced a rise in alcohol taxes. When asked why, they replied: “to create more revenue for the state and discourage alcohol consume at the same time...think about it! The Media and Magazine industry is sometimes glorified in movies and television shows. Unfortunately not all magazines are “Hello” and “Big Chili” and not all Newspapers are “ Bangkok Post”, “ Daily Telegraph” or New York Times. Media, thus Magazine editors are like yours truly, thinly veiled taking on politicians in general. There are magazines of all shapes and sizes that cover critical topics like international and local news and those that get down to the critical situation of environment and public health. Most magazines rely on an editorial hierarchy to produce issues, earn and maintain readers, and drive ad sales. APPROACH´s primary goal is to produce exceptional content , articles, stories and usefull information, meet deadlines and watch budgets. Our big brothers have multiple theme editors, a hurd of graphicians and free lancing reporters. APPROACH is a two men and two girls show. Our editor must oversee all professionals who in return must develop a working relationship with all team members and at the same time keep tight relations with customers, advertisers and authorities. Why am I bothering you with this? Tried to find an excuse for being two days late this month. Have a great pre-high season.

Hua Hin, Jewel on The Gulf Of Siam by GMoss

THE FASTEST GROWING TOP TOURIST DESTINATION IN THAILAND.

O

ur sleepy town of Hua Hin located approximately 200 kilometers south of Bangkok on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand, is slowly but surely

waking up and rapidly developing. It is the oldest, and most traditional, resort destination in Thailand with the attractions of a modern holiday destination mixed with the charms of an older fishing village from which it draws its roots. Hua Hin was transformed from this fishing village into a Royal resort destination during the reign of King Rama VI (1910 – 1925), as a getaway from the busy metropolis of Bangkok. This resulted in the construction of the Royal Hua Hin Railway station, still standing today in its entire original splendor, in the 1920´s.

APPR OACH M AGAZINE

This was soon followed by the construction of the Klai Kangwon (Far from worries) Palace by King Rama VII (1926), which remains as the official Royal Residence, to this day, and is what has given Hua Hin its very unique identity. His Majesty King Bhumibol presently resides in the palace with Queen Sirikit. Due to HRM King Adulyadej Bhumibol´s presence, the town is generally fortified by garrisons of troops including an elite parachute regiment, the Air Arm of the Royal Thai Police, and naval destroyers resulting in a virtually non-existent crime rate. A colonial style railway hotel, the Centara Grand was built in 1923 by the State Railway Authority.

Hua Hin is not only a top beach destination, but also golfer´s paradise Hua Hin has 7 world class golf courses, making it the highest density for golf anywhere in Thailand. In addition green fees and other costs remain competitive. The Hua Hin Market Village opened early in 2007 offering a large variety of brand named clothing and goods previously unavailable in Hua Hin. This huge complex also features a 4000 m² Tesco Lotus Superstore, a Home Pro , a Major Cineplex and Bowling Center along with world famous restaurants and clothing stores. All these developments are helping further enhance Hua Hin´s ever growing popularity for tourism. The Bluport mall by the Mall Co. from Bangkok , developers of Siam Paragon and the Emporium, will open its doors by the end of 2015 with a Crown Plaza hotel integrated. Hua Hin is also graced by leading resort and spa chains such as the Anantara, Hilton, Hyatt, Marriot, Holiday Inn, Sheraton, Intercontinental, Amari, Best Western and Ibis which make it an idyllic holiday destination. The surrounding regions of Hua Hin offer incredible natural resources, such as the azure ocean, stunning white sand beaches, outstanding nation reserves, jungle-clad hills, forests, waterfalls, caves, vineyards and a plethora of fauna and flora. Traditional monuments such as palaces and temples are also within easy reach of the town, all providing the makings of excellent excursions.

Despite being Thailand´s oldest beach and holiday resort, the town has managed to keep a relatively low profile, being the preferred destination for laid-back family holiday makers, travelers and of course wealthy, affluent Thais. However, presently Hua Hin is growing fast . Projects such as the Venezia, Jungle Water Park, Condominium projects and luxury Villa developments turn Hua Hin into an even more attractive Hua Hin is just a two hour drive from Bangkok, due to a fabulous new 6 lane motorway which is almost completed. In addition , in Hua Hin, Soi 112 is being converted into a 4 lane feeder highway to the main by-pass highway to Bangkok and the South. This makes it an easy commute for both domestic and international travelers, especially those arriving at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. There are near future plans to open up regular air services between the two main airports in Bangkok and Hua Hin. Hua Hin is also conveniently linked to Kuala Lumpur through direct flights from Hua Hin with Berjaja Airways. Our Royal beach town truly offers a laid back and friendly atmosphere with the Thais being amongst the friendliest population of the world. Good infrastructure, in terms of roads, water and sewerage are all in place. Hospitals, pharmacies and bi-lingual education centres are present. There are also fine sea food restaurants, international & Thai cuisine, supermarkets and international delis to serve daily needs, providing a large selection of imported delicacies.

MUSIC

Forever Stars in Music by Gmoss

AND THEY ARE HERE TO STAY.

I

n botany, an evergreen is a plant that has leaves in all four seasons. They never fall off and are there to stay. In the music world it is referred to as music that is easy to listen to, making the hit lists and still popular today. Evergreens can be heard by all age groups from birth to death no matter what mood you are in. Especially our parents, but even the new generation of Tablet, Smartphone and Pod players will listen Frank Sinatra , Bing Crosby , Paul Anka, Elvis Presley, Andy Williams, Charles Aznavour , Pia Beck, Edit Phiaf, Udo Jürgens, Yves Montand, Mieke Telkamp, Johhny Halliday, Julie Andrews, Willi Valotti, Carlo Brunner, Rob de Nijs, Heino, Adriano Celentano and dozens others. If we would have to refer to most popular Karaoke song ever, My Way, written by Paul Anka for Frank Sinatra, would get a gold medal. Although the most sold song ever is White Christmas from Bing Crosby, Rock and Roll is not far behind, however trailing is Candle in the Wind from Elton John . These days music and melody seem to have taken a backstage seat. There are hardly any melodies in contemporary songs. Repeat Lyrics with Techno beat and sub woofering bass tones rule our music world. Here is a tribute to past & present performers, selected by APPROACH, who gave and give us music never to forget, whether it is summer winter or fall, they gave it to us all. It is a selection out of 100 best performers mentioned by the magazine Rolling Stone.

Freddy Mercury (1946 - 1991) He has been referred to as “Britain’s first Asian rock star”. In 2002, Mercury was placed at number 58 in the BBC’s poll of the 100 Greatest Britons, in 2006, Time Asia named him one of the most influential Asian heroes of the past 60 years

Key Songs

We are the Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, Your My Best Friend

Elton John (1947)

Elton has a dumbfounding stylistic range, unleashing his singsong falsetto and his ferocious hard-rock bellow.

Key Songs

Good Bye Yellow Brick Road, Candle in The Wind, Your Song

Aretha Franklin (1942) You know a force from heaven. You know something that God made. And Aretha is a gift from God. Aretha has everything — the power, the technique.

Key Songs

(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Respect, I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You), Think, Chain of Fools

Bing Crosby (1903 - 1977) trademark bass-baritone voice made him one of the best-selling recording artists of the 20th century, with over half a billion records in circulation.

Key Songs

White Christmas, Swinging on a Star, Pennies from Heaven, Don´t Fence me In APPR OACH M AGAZINE

MUSIC Michael Jackson (1958 - 2010) Michael Jackson is a perfect storm of innate talent and training. His singing as a child is astounding: He just nailed “I Want You Back” — there’s maybe one bum note on that song, which is crazy to me, because he was only 11 years old.

Key Songs

Beat It , Billy Jean, Thriller, Man in The Mirror

Ray Charles (1930 – 2004) Ray Charles had the most unique voice in popular music. He would do these improvisational things and his joy was infectious.

Key Songs

What’d I Say, Pts. 1 & 2, I Got a Woman, You Don’t Know Me, Georgia on My Mind

Whitney Houston (1963 - 2012) Whitney had emerged as the greatest female voice of her generation. Her voice is a mammoth, coruscating cry. Few vocalists could get away with opening a song with 45 unaccompanied seconds of singing.

Key Songs

The Greatest Love of All, I will always love you

Elvis Presley (1935 - 1977) There is a difference between people who sing and those who take that voice to another, otherworldly place, who create euphoria within themselves. It’s transfiguration. Elvis was a transformer.

Key Songs

Love Me Tender , Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, It´s Now or Never , Are You lonesome Tonight

Frank Sinatra (1915 - 1998) Called “The Voice” he began singing for tips at the age of eight, standing on top of the bar at a local nightclub in Hoboken. Sinatra began singing professionally as a teenager in the 1930’s although he learned music by ear and never learned how to read music.

Key Songs

My Way , Fly me to the Moon, Come Fly with Me. September of my Years, Somethin Stupid ( with Daughter Nancy)

Tina Turner (1939) Turner’s voice defies classification. You can’t say soul, R&B, rock & roll She’s all of it! She can squeeze passion from any line.Turner’s voice defies classification.

Key Songs

Proud Mary, I´ll Survive

HERITAGE

The Emperors of this World

A

n emperor (through Old French Empereor from Latin Imperator) is a (male) monarch, usually the sovereign ruler of an empire or another type of imperial realm. Empress, the female equivalent, may indicate an emperor’s wife (empress consort), mother (empress dowager), or a woman who rules in her own right (empress regnant). Emperors are generally recognized to be of a higher honour and rank than kings. Currently, the Emperor of Japan is the only reigning monarch with the title. Both kings and emperors are monarchs. Within the European context, emperor and empress are considered the higher monarchical titles.

France One of the most famous Imperial coronation ceremonies was that of Napoleon, crowning himself Emperor in the presence of Pope Pius VII (who had blessed the regalia), at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The pope positioned near the altar, Napoleon proceeds to crown his then wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais as Empress. Napoleon Bonaparte, who was already First Consul of the French Republic (Premier Consul de la République française) for life, declared himself Emperor of the French (Empereur des Français) on 18 May 1804, thus creating the Empire of the French (Empire des Français). Napoleon relinquished the title of Emperor of the French on 6 April and again on 11 April 1814. Napoleon’s infant son, Napoleon II, was recognized by the Council of Peers, as Emperor from the moment of his father’s abdication, and therefore reigned (as opposed to ruled) as Emperor for fifteen days, 22 June to 7 July 1815.

HERITAGE Austria The first Austrian Emperor was the last Holy Roman Emperor Francis II. In the face of aggressions by Napoleon, Francis feared for the future of the Holy Roman Empire. However, Francis’ dynasty continued to rule from Austria and a Habsburg monarch was still an emperor (Kaiser), and not just merely a king (König), in name. The title lasted just a little over one century until 1918. The title of Emperor of Austria and the associated Empire were both abolished at the end of the First World War in 1918, when German Austria became a republic and the other kingdoms and lands represented in the Imperial Council established their independence or adhesion to other states. Germany Wilhelm II, German Emperor and the King of Prussia. German nationalism rapidly shifted from its liberal and democratic character in 1848 to Prussian prime minister Otto von Bismarck’s authoritarian Realpolitik. Bismarck wanted to unify the rival German states to achieve his aim of a conservative, Prussian-dominated Germany. Three wars led to military successes and helped to convince German people to do this: the Second war of Schleswig against Denmark in 1864, the Austro-Prussian War against Austria in 1866, and the Franco-Prussian War against the Second French Empire in 1870–71. During the Siege of Paris in 1871, the North German Confederation, supported by its allies from southern Germany, formed the German Empire with the proclamation of the Prussian king Wilhelm I as German Emperor in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, to the humiliation of the French, who ceased to resist only days later. Japan Emperor Hirohito, or the Showa Emperor the last Japanese Emperor having ruled with prerogative powers, combined with assumption of divinity (photographed 1926). In fact, through much of Japanese history, the emperor has been little more than a figurehead. After World War II, all claims of divinity were dropped . The Diet acquired all prerogative powers of the Crown, reverting the latter to a ceremonial role. By the end of the 20th century, Japan was the only country with an emperor on the throne. As of the early 21st century, Japan’s succession law prohibits a female from ascending the throne. With the birth of a daughter as the first child of the current Crown Prince, Naruhito, Japan considered abandoning that rule. However, shortly after the announcement that Princess Kiko was pregnant with her third child, the proposal to alter the Imperial Household Law was suspended by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. On 3 January 2007, after the birth of her son, Prince Hisahito, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced that he would drop the proposal. Currently, many believe the new prince of Japan will ascend the throne, as the law defines. Historically, Japan has had eight reigning empresses who used the genderless title Tenno. There is ongoing discussion of the Japanese Imperial succession controversy. Although current Japanese law prohibits female succession, all Japanese emperors claim to trace their lineage to Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess of the Shinto religion. Northern Wales Great Britain In the late 3rd century, by the end of the epoch of the barracks emperors in Rome, there were two Britannic Emperors, reigning for about a decade. After the end of Roman rule in Britain, the Imperator Cunedda forged the Kingdom of Gwynedd in northern Wales, but all his successors were titled kings and princes. Cunedda established himself in Wales, in the territory of the Venedoti, which would become the centre of the kingdom of Gwynedd. Two explanations for these actions have been suggested: either Cunedda was acting under the orders of Maximus (or Maximus’s successors) or Vortigern, the high king of the British in the immediate postRoman era.The range of dates (suggested by Peter Bartrum) runs from the late 370’s, which would favour Maximus, to the late 440’s, which would favour Vortigern. Mexico In Mexico, the First Mexican Empire was the first of two empires created. After the declaration of independence on September 15, 1821, it was the intention of the Mexican parliament to establish a commonwealth whereby the King of Spain, Ferdinand VII, would also be Emperor of Mexico, but in which both countries were to be governed by separate laws and with their own legislative offices. Should the king refuse the position, the law provided for a member of the House of Bourbon to accede to the Mexican throne. Ferdinand VII, however, did not recognize the independence and said that Spain would not allow any other European prince to take the throne of Mexico. By request of Parliament, the president of the regency Agustín de Iturbide was proclaimed emperor of Mexico in 12 July 1822 as Agustín I. Agustín de Iturbide was the general who helped secure Mexican independence from Spanish rule, but was overthrown by the Plan of Casa Mata. In 1863, the invading French, under Napoleon III (see above), in alliance with Mexican conservatives and nobility, helped create the Second Mexican Empire, and invited Archduke Maximilian, of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, younger brother of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I, to become emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. HERITAGE Persia Shah and King of Kings. In Persia, from the time of Darius the Great, Persian rulers used the title “King of Kings” (Shahanshah in modern Iranian) since they had dominion over peoples from India to Greece. Alexander the Great probably crowned himself shahanshah after conquering Persia, bringing the phrase basileus toon basileoon to Greek. It is also known that Tigranes the Great, king of Armenia, was named as the king of kings when he made his empire after defeating the Parthians. The last shahanshah was ousted in 1979 following the Iranian Revolution. Shahanshah is usually translated as king of kings or simply king for ancient rulers of the Achaemenid, Arsacid, and Sassanid dynasties, and often shortened to shah for rulers since the Safavid dynasty in the 16th century. Aztec The only pre-Columbian North American rulers to be commonly called emperors were the Hueyi Tlatoani of the Aztec Empire (1375–1521). It was an elected monarchy chosen by the elite. Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés slew Emperor Cuauhtémoc and installed puppet rulers who became vassals for Spain. Mexican Emperor Maximilian built his palace, Chapultepec Castle, over the ruins of an Aztec empire. The only pre-Columbian South American rulers to be commonly called emperors were the Sapa Inca of the Inca Empire (1438–1533). Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, conquered the Inca for Spain, killed Emperor Atahualpa, and installed puppets as well. Atahualpa may actually be considered a usurper as he had achieved power by killing his half-brother and he did not perform the required coronation with the imperial crown mascaipacha by the Huillaq Uma (high priest). Ethiopia In Ethiopia, the Solomonic dynasty used, beginning in 1270, the title of “King of Kings”. The use of the king of kings style began a millennium earlier in this region. In 1936, the Italian king Victor Emmanuel III claimed the title of Emperor of Ethiopia after Ethiopia was occupied by Italy during the Second Italo-Abyssinian War. After the defeat of the Italians by the Ethiopians who were assisted by soldiers from Britain in 1941, Haile Selassie was restored to the throne but Victor Emmanuel did not relinquish his claim to the title until 1943. The Rastafari claimed Selassie as God incarnate before and even more so after the Second World War (see Rastafari movement) because of his bravery in The Second Italo-Abyssinian War, the way he saved his country and his amazing speech to League of Nations. Subsequently, therefore, the word Emperor came to be used by its members as an honorific of exclusive usage for their divine king, as personified by the late Emperor of Ethiopia. China The East Asian tradition is different from the Roman tradition, having arisen separately. In 221 BC, Ying Zheng, who was king of Qin at the time, proclaimed himself shi huangdi which translates as “first emperor”. The imperial title continued in China until the Qing Dynasty was overthrown in 1912. The title was briefly revived from 12 December 1915 to 22 March 1916 by President Yuan Shikai and again in early July 1917 when General Zhang Xun attempted to restore last Qing emperor Puyi to the throne. Puyi retained the title and attributes of a foreign emperor, as a personal status, until 1924. After the Japanese occupied Manchuria in 1931, they proclaimed it to be the Empire of Manchukuo, and Puyi became emperor of Manchukuo. This empire ceased to exist when it was occupied by the Soviet Red Army in 1945. In general, an emperor would have one empress at one time, although posthumous entitlement to empress for a concubine was not uncommon. Korea The rulers of Goguryeo (37 BC-668 AD) used the title of Taewang, literally translated as the Greatest of the Kings. Also some Silla (57 BC-935 AD) rulers including Beopheung and Jinheung used this title for their declaration of independence from the influence of Goguryeo. In the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-’95, Japan defeated the Qing Dynasty China, and the Treaty of Shimonoseki was concluded in which Japan had China recognize the independence and autonomy of Korea. However, King Gojong used term of “His Majesty the Great Monarch” not officlal imperial title. In 1897, King Gojong proclaimed the founding of the Korean Empire (1897–1910), and became emperor of Korea. Emperor Gojong declared the new era name “Gwangmu”, warrior of light. The Korean Empire maintained their state until 1910. Russia Ivan IV emphatically crowned himself Tsar (Tsar) on 16 January 1547. The word Tsar derives from Latin Caesar, but this title was used in Russia as equivalent to King; the error occurred when medieval Russian clerics referred to the biblical Jewish kings with the same title that was used to designate Roman and Byzantine rulers - Caesar. On 31 October 1721, Peter I was proclaimed Emperor by the Senate. Imperial Russia produced four reigning Empresses, all in the eighteenth century.

WHAT THE MONT BLANC IS FOR EUROPE, IS THE DOI INTHANON FOR THAILAND.

T

Both problems have been largely resolved, although caution is still advised near the border with Myanmar in the provinces of Tak and Mae Hong Son. The mix of ethnic people such as the hill tribes, Shan (Tai Yai), Burmese and mainland Thais make it a rich melting pot of cultures. The rich cultural and historical tapestry of Northern Thailand is one of the most authentic places to visit in Thailand.

he North of Thailand, with its roughed and mountainous scenery has been a popular destination for adventure seeking visitors. There is

a series of mountainous regions with climbable mountains especially suited for trekkers. Stretching across the northern borders with Myanmar and Laos these mountains and hills are worthwhile a visit as they also disclose ancient cultures and hill tribes.

North Thailand also shares many borders with Myanmar and Laos, so its possible to see these borders or even visit for the day. Such as at the Golden Triangle, the meeting point of 3 countries (Thailand,Laos,Myanmar) on the confluence of the Mekong River.

With the Mont Blanc in Switzerland peaking at 4,810 m, The highest peak in Thailand, the Doi Inthanon is only 2,580 high. There are about 10 mountain peaks over 2000m high with incredible sceneries. Surrounded by the tallest mountains in Thailand, Northern Thailand is cooler than the rest of the usually sweltering country and thus particularly popular in December and January. In the mountains at night temperatures occasionally dip below freezing, although in the plains the daily average is rarely less than 25 Centigrade. Culturally, Northern Thailand shows heavy influences from the neighbouring cultures of Myanmar and Yunnan (China). The kingdoms of Lanna (centred at Chiang Mai) and Sukhothai were the first historical Thai nations.Much of northern Thailand was for a long time off limits due to a series of Communist insurgencies and Myanmar’s drug battles and civil wars spilling over the border.

Temples in Chiang Mai and historical sites in Sukhothai are the major cultural attractions of Northern Thailand, the birthplace of Thai civilization. When invaders pushed a Thai prince from Chiang Saen and the Golden Triangle in 1015, he moved his court to Kampangphet, a city that coalesced into the Thai Sukothai kingdom battling Ankor kings for control of the Thai plains, and then a key plank in Thai defence against Burmese invasion. Northern Thailand has some of the best biking roads in the world, which pass through some stunning scenery.

Tropical Plants and Trees THE FAMOUS JACKFRUIT

T

by Dr. George Grossniklaus

he jackfruit, alternately - jack tree, jakfruit, Artocarpus heterophyllus, is a species of tree in the Artocarpus genus of the mulberry family (Moraceae). It is native

to South and Southeast Asia, and is believed to have originated in the Southwestern rain forests of India, in present-day Kerala. Artocarpus heterophyllus grows as an evergreen tree, which has a relatively short stem with a dense canopy, but easily reaches stature heights of 10 m to 20 m and trunk diameter of 30 to 50 centimeters. The thick bark is blackish brown and smooth. The bark of the jackfruit tree is dark brown and rough, inside dyed pink, if the bark is wounded, milk juice is coming out. The alternate and spirally arranged leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The petiole is 1 to 3 centimeters long. The leathery leaf blade is 7 to 15 up to 20 cm long, 3-7 cm wide and elliptical-oblong to obovate. On young trees the leaves are lobed and bright green. On older trees, the leaves are dark green with a smooth edge. The leaf blade has a prominent main nerve, and from there, six to eight lateral nerves on each side. The stipules are ovoid, with a length from 1.5 to 8 centimeters. The inflorescences are formed on the trunk, branches or twigs. Jackfruit trees are monoecious, separate sexes, means, that on a tree one can find both kind of flowers, female and male. The male flowers are in cylindrical stems in multiflowered inflorescences with 1-5 cm long inflorescence stem, some flowers are sterile. The male flowers are hairy and the calyx tube ends with two 1 to 1.5 millimeters calyx lobes. The stamens are just in bud, and the anthers are elliptical. The female flowers are in racemes with spherical, fleshy rachis. The female flowers contain a unicompartmental ovary. The flowering period extends from December, mostly to February into March.

ENVIRONMENT

Health Benefits of Jackfruit

• 100 g of edible jackfruit bulbs provide 95 calories. The fruit is made of soft, easily digestible flesh (bulbs) with simple sugars like fructose and sucrose that when eaten replenishes energy and revitalizes the body instantly. • Jackfruit is rich in dietary fiber, which makes it a good bulk laxative. The fiber content helps to protect the colon mucous

membrane by decreasing exposure time and as well as binding to cancer-causing chemicals in the colon.

• Fresh fruit has small amounts of vitamin-A, and flavonoid pigments such as carotene-ß, xanthin, lutein and cryptoxanthin-ß. Together, these compounds play vital roles in antioxidant and vision functions. Vitamin A is also required for maintaining integrity of mucus membranes and skin. Consumption of natural fruits rich in vitamin-A, and carotenes has been found to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers. • In addition, jackfruit is a good source of antioxidant vitamin-C, provides about 13.7 mg or 23% of RDA. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful free radicals. • It is one of the rare fruits that is rich in B-complex group of vitamins. It contains very good amounts of vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), niacin, riboflavin, and folic acid. • Fresh fruit is a good source of potassium, magnesium, manganese, and iron. Potassium is an important component of

cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure.

Some trees bear too many mediocre sized fruits. They remove a large number of immature fruits, then cooked them as vegetables. Thus, the other fruits can better develop to maturity. A known Javanese specialty is Gudeg, a mild-tasting dish with coconut milk, chicken and spices.

Jack fruits grow on the trunk, are of different sizes and with little nubs surrounded by an initially yellowish-greenish, yellowishbrown at maturity, hard shell with conical, hexagonal tubercles. The very large and differently shaped collecting fruits have a length of 30 to 100 cm and a diameter of 15 to 50 cm and can be up to 10 - 15 kg of weight. The collecting fruits are composed of many narrow-elliptical stone fruit , which have a length of about 4 centimeters and a diameter of 1.5 to 2 centimeters. They ripen during the rainy season from July to August. The bean-shaped seeds of jackfruit are covered with a yellowish solid flesh, which has an intensely sweet flavor. The flesh is encased by many small fiber strands which run between the hard shell of a woody inner part of the fruit. When you cut, the inner part secretes an extremely sticky milky secretion that can not be removed with soap and water, but with oil or other solvents. The large numbers of fruit seeds taste like chestnuts, and in some countries they are eaten raw, cooked or dried. The fruit develops an unpleasant sweet smell when ripe and then spoils quickly.

The wood of the jackfruit tree is medium hard, weather resistant, termite resistant and can be polished well. It is greatly appreciated and used as furniture wood and made into musical instruments; Indonesia (Indonesian: pohon nangka) for the frames of some gong games and the barrel drum: Kendang and the plucked lute Gambus, in India, among other things, the barrel drum Maddale who is played in Kerala as cylinder drum Chenda and partly for the hourglass Idakka. In this southern Indian state the tree is sacred and as a homeplace of the Hindu Goddess Kali. Therefore altar pictures of the Goddess and the crown for the protagonist in the religious dance drama Mutiyettu are made ritually from jackfruit wood.

The fruits are used in the South and Southeast Asian cuisine. The sun-dried fruits are traded as “Jackfruit chips”. In many provinces of Thailand award-winning products are processed for export under the “One Tambon One Product” program. Even in the raw state, the jackfruit is picked and eaten as a dessert. The inner, yellowish flesh is taken out and stoning is done. The taste of jackfruit reminiscent of the fruit of the Lychee.

The

Common Hoopoe UPUPA EPOPS

by Dr. George Grossniklaus

T

he Hoopoe (Upupa epops ) is one of several species of the scientific family of the hoopoe bird ( Upupidae ). Despite its attractive and distinctive

plumage, the hoopoe is superbly camouflaged for its groundfeeding behavior in its preferred dry habitats. It is the national bird of Israel. Appearance - Characteristic features are the contrasting black and white banded wings with distinct yellow inclusions, the long, dark curved beak and the five to six inches long erectile crest. The tail is black with a wide white bandage about the last third of the tail. The rest of the body is ranging from pink-buff to orange-buff to tan. Also characteristic is the wave-shaped, butterfly -like fluttering flight. The sexes are very similar. The females are slightly smaller. Vocalization - It consists of mostly three (two to five ) dull, pipe flute-like elements on, u ‘ ( also , up ‘ or ‘ pu’ ) which carry very far. This reputation has led to the scientific genus name ( onomatopoeia ). The intervals between the verses are rarely longer than five seconds. Both sexes call for interference rough, rääh ‘ what strongly reminiscent of the warning cry of the Jay. Habitat - The Hoopoe is able to colonize a variety of habitats, but they are always exposed to heat, dry, not too dense wooded areas with only short or sparse vegetation at all. The species occurs mainly extensively in fruit and wine cultures in areas with livestock grazing on bushy areas .

APPR OACH M AGAZINE

Reproduction - Hoopoes are monogamous birds. As cavity-nesters, they choose nesting sites low to the ground, often in a hole in a wall or occasionally in low nest boxes. A typical brood can have from 3-12 round, pale, milky blue eggs, and 1-3 broods may be laid per mated pair each season. The male may feed her during the 15 days incubation period. After hatching, the altrical chicks are covered with a fine down and are fed by both parents for 25-29 days until they leave the nest. Feeding - The diet of the Hoopoe is mostly composed of insects, although small reptiles, frogs and plant matter such as seeds and berries are sometimes taken as well. More commonly their foraging style is to stride on relatively open ground and periodically pause to probe the ground with the full length of their bill. Insect larvae, pupae and mole crickets are detected by the bill and either extracted or dug out with the strong feet. In addition to feeding in soil Hoopoes will feed on insects on the surface, as well as probing into piles of leaves and even using the bill to lever large stones and flake off bark. Common diet items include crickets, locusts, beetles, earwigs, cicadas, ant lions, bugs and ants. Enemy Behavior - The enemy behavior, the hoopoe have developed some special behaviors. The sudden appearance of a bird of prey, when a safe refuge in a hiding place is no longer possible the Hoopoes go into a camouflaged position that underpins how the body contour resolution can be as high contrast colored plumage. Here, the bird lays with wide spread wings and tail flat on the ground, neck, head and beak are steeply upward.

ECONOMY

Thailand’s Economy does not meet Expectations IT IS NOT ABOUT EXPORT – IT IS ABOUT DOMESTIC DEMAND.

“We should be looking at growth of about 3.5%,” he said. “In the early part of the year, expectations were that Thailand would be forging ahead of several Asian economies, so that has been a big disappointment.” The end of large-scale government investment projects following the devastation caused by flooding at the end of 2011 has also been cited as a cause for the fall in domestic consumption, which accounts for about half of economic output.

The economy shrank unexpectedly in the second quarter of the year. A 0.3% negative growth in gross domestic product between April and June 2013 followed a previous fall of 1.7% during the first quarter of 2013. Previously, Thailand had been recording strong economic growth, outpacing other economies in the region, with expansion of more than 6% during 2012.

By the end of 2012 Thailand’s growth was exceeding expectations, with gross domestic product in the October-toDecember period jumping by 18.9% from a year earlier. However, high household debt, and rising prices have continued to cause concern, and following a cut in interest rates in May, the Bank of Thailand left rates unchanged at 2.5% at its last meeting.

Many analysts had expected this performance to continue. Sanjay Mathur, head of economics research at RBS, told the BBC that weak exports and domestic demand, plus fading business confidence, were to blame for the downturn. “The fundamental problem here is that it’s not just about exports, it is about domestic demand.”

US Federal Reserve eyed a Stimulus for the US Economy As APPROACH hits the printer, this news may already be history. However; US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke was expected to announce an end to the central bank’s extraordinary stimulus efforts. Fed watchers believe that the bank will begin to slow down its purchase of $85bn of bonds monthly. Does this indicate that Fed officials think the US economy is back on track? The challenges confronting the Fed are vast as it tries to navigate a completely new situation: how to return to normal, five years after the housing market collapse and subsequent recession forced the bank into new and untested stimulus tools. The US economy was also relatively worry free this summer, with job growth holding relatively constant at 160,000 a month APPR OACH M AGAZINE

and good, if not great, GDP figures. But the question remains: is the US economy strong enough to continue to grow without the Fed’s extraordinary efforts. Consumer spending makes up two-thirds of US economic activity, a slowdown in refinancing could have profound effects. Again and also in the US, consumer spending and not exports determine growth or not.

Eurozone: German Investor Confidence rises to a Three-Year High

EURO ZONE ECONOMY GROWS, BUT NO CHEERING YET. Confidence among German investors has reached its highest level for three years, a survey suggests, boosting optimism for a Eurozone recovery. A poll of investor confidence by German think-tank ZEW rose to 49.6 points in September, up from 42 in August and the highest level since 2010. The figure was higher than expected and the euro strengthened against the dollar after the survey was released. The Eurozone is emerging from recession after a record 18 months of economic contraction. The bloc’s GDP grew by 0.3% in the second quarter of 2013, slightly ahead of forecasts, the Eurostat agency said.

The growth was widely expected after the German economy rose 0.7% between April and June. However, the overall figure masks the mixed economic fortunes among the countries that make up the 17-country Eurozone area. Germany and France both posted stronger-than-expected growth, expanding 0.7% and 0.5% respectively. Portugal, among the smallest and the weakest Eurozone economies, showed the fastest growth, at 1.1%. The country was one of three that had to take a multi-billionEuro bailout. Spain, which had to seek outside support for its struggling banking sector, saw its economic output fall by 0.1% on the quarter. Furthermore Italy and the Netherlands both saw output drop by 0.2%. European Commission Vice-President Olli Rehn said the figures suggested the European economy was gradually gaining momentum, but added there was no room for complacency. The figures reaffirm Germany’s position as the powerhouse behind the Eurozone. The country narrowly avoided recession earlier this year, but GDP in the second quarter of 2013 was driven up by demand from both consumers and businesses. The improvement comes just weeks before a federal election that will see Chancellor Angela Merkel stand for a third term in office. Her economic adviser, Michael Fuchs, said Germany had a great chance to be a “locomotive” that led European growth.

Angela Merkel celebrates German Election Win EARTH SLIDE VICTORY FOR ANGELA MERKEL. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party has won Germany’s election, but finished just short of an absolute majority, official results show. Mrs Merkel earlier urged her party to celebrate “a super result” after exit polls suggested she was set to win a historic third term. Her Christian Democrats (CDU) bloc took about 42% of the vote. But she might yet have to seek a grand coalition with the Social Democrats (SPD) who won about 26% of the vote. Mrs Merkel’s preferred liberal partners have not made it into parliament. For every country in Europe, it’s all about the economy. Across the continent, people are still battling with the twists and turns of the financial crisis. And wherever you are, economic recovery depends heavily on how Angela Merkel treats the next stage of the crisis: these days, most roads lead to Berlin. Correspondents say that the result is nevertheless a ringing endorsement of her steady leadership during the euro zone crisis.

Lord of the CLOCK Rings Originally created as a design concept by Gusztav Szikszai two years ago, it’s a metal ring with three rows of labels on its body. The first row shows numbers 1 to 24, the second shows 1 to 59, and the third sports little dots, which correspond to the hours, minutes and seconds, respectively. To tell the time, built-in LEDs will light up the corresponding labels as soon as the ring is spun. It uses ultra-thin mono-color LEDs in either orange or blue as a light-up indicator, which will switch on for one minute at a time as soon as the ring is spun around your finger (it shuts off automatically to save battery life). An onboard 6mAh rechargeable battery sits inside, which can power the ring for an estimated one week. Classic Sports Cars A VOYAGE THROUGH THE ROADSTER YEARS.

A

sports car is a small, usually two seater, two door automobile designed for performance and upgraded handling. Sports cars may

be Spartan or luxurious but high manoeuvrability and minimum weight are requisite. The basis for the sports car is traced to the early 20th century touring cars and roadsters. These raced in early rallys, such as the Herkomer Cup, Prinz Heinrich Fahrt, and Monte Carlo. Though the term sports car would not be coined until after World War One, the first sports cars are considered to be the 3 litre 1910

Prince Henry (Prinz Heinrich) Vauxhall 20 hp (tax rating) and the 27/80PS Austro-Daimler designed by Ferdinand Porsche. A car may be a sporting automobile without being a sports car. Performance modifications of regular, production cars, such as sport compacts, sports sedans, muscle cars, hot hatches and the like, generally are not considered sports cars, yet share traits common to sports cars. They are sometimes called “sports cars” for marketing purposes for increased advertising and promotional purposes.

Jaguar E Type (1957 - 1971) The Jaguar E-Type (a.k.a. Jaguar XK-E) is a British sports car, manufactured by Jaguar Cars Ltd between 1961 and 1974. Its combination of good looks, high performance and competitive pricing established the marque as an icon of 1960s motoring. More than 70,000 E-Types were sold. In March 2008, the Jaguar E-Type ranked first in a The Daily Telegraph online list of the world’s “100 most beautiful cars” of all time. A “2+2” four-seater version of the coupé, with a lengthened wheelbase, was released several years later. On its release Enzo Ferrari called it “The most beautiful car ever made”. The 3.8-litre engine was increased to 4.2 litres in October 1964.The 4.2-litre engine produced the same power as the 3.8-litre (265bhp) and same top speed (150mph). Acceleration remained pretty much the same and 0 to 60mph times were around 7.0 ses.

Triumph TR3 (1955 - 1962) The Triumph TR3 is a sports car produced between 1955 and 1962 by Standard-Triumph in England. The face-lifted variant, popularly but unofficially known as the TR3A, entered production in 1957 and the final version, unofficially the TR3B, was produced in 1962. The car was powered by a 1991 cc straight-4 OHV engine initially producing 95 bhp (71 kW; 96 PS), an increase of 5 hp over the TR2 thanks to the larger SU-H6 carburettors fitted. This was later increased to 100 bhp at 5000 rpmby the addition of a “high port” cylinder head and enlarged manifold. The four-speed manual gearbox could be supplemented by an overdrive unit on the top three ratios, electrically operated and controlled by a switch on the dash. In 1956 the front brakes were changed from drums to discs, the TR3 thus becoming the first series production car to be so fitted. APPR OACH M AGAZINE

Mercedes 190 SL (1955 -1963) The Mercedes-Benz 190SL is a two-door grand touring convertible with an optional removable hardtop that was produced by MercedesBenz between May 1955 and February 1963. A prototype was first shown at the 1954 New York Auto Show. The 190SL was powered by a new, slightly over-square 1.9 L straightfour SOHC engine (Type M121 BII), that developed 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) (or 120 gross hp) that earned itself a reputation for not running that smoothly mostly due to the difficulty in properly synchronising the twin-choke dual Solex carburettors, and that, in detuned form, was later also used in the W120 180 and W121 190 models.

Chevrolet Corvette (1953 – 1962) The first generation Corvette was introduced late in the 1953 model year. Originally designed as a show car for the 1953 Motorama display at the New York Auto Show. The engine was the same inline six that powered all other Chevrolet models, but with a higher-compression ratio, three Carter side-draft carburettors, and a more aggressive cam. Output was 150 horsepower. Because there was currently no manual transmission available to Chevrolet rated to handle 150 HP, a twospeed Powerglide automatic was used. 0-60 mph time was 11.5 seconds. To keep tooling costs in line, the body was made out of fiberglass instead of steel. First production was on June 30, 1953.

Ford Thunderbird (1955 – 2005) The Thunderbird (“T-Bird”), was an automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor Company in the United States over eleven model generations from 1955 through 2005. When introduced, it created the market niche eventually known as the personal luxury car. The Ford Thunderbird began life in February 1953 in direct response to Chevrolet’s new sports car. Like the Corvette, the Thunderbird had a two-seat coupé/convertible layout. Production of the Thunderbird began later on in 1954. The Thunderbird had features like a faux hood scoop and a 150 mph (240 km/h) speedometer hinting a higher performance nature that other Fords didn’t possess. Mechanically though, the Thunderbird could trace its roots to other mainstream Fords. The car’s standard 292 cu in engine (4.8 L) Y-block V8 came from Ford’s Mercury division.

Porsche 356 (1948 - 1965) The Porsche 356 is an automobile which was produced by German company Porsche from 1948 to 1965. It was the company’s first production automobile. The 356 was a lightweight and nimblehandling rear-engine rear-wheel-drive 2-door sports car available in hardtop coupe and open configurations. Design innovations continued during the years of manufacture, contributing to its motorsports success and popularity. Production started in 1948 at Gmünd, Austria, where approximately 50 cars were built. In 1950 the factory relocated to Zuffenhausen, Germany, and general production of the 356 continued until April 1965, well after the replacement model 911 made its autumn 1963 debut. Another Pininfarina and Vignale car, the 375 used the new 4.5 L Lampredi engine with up to 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp). The 340 and 375 were expensive and exclusive. The end of the top-line America series was the 1964 500 Superfast. Early in development, and even into production, these cars were to be called “Superamericas”, but the decision was made at the last moment to use “Superfast” instead. The engine was a 5.0 L Ferrari Colombo V12 engine, with 400 PS (294 kW; 395 hp) available, now pushing the car to 275 km/h (171 mph). Bodywork was again done by Pininfarina.

MG - A Roadster (1955 - 1962) This aerodynamic and beautiful two-seater roadster was a huge leap forward from the T-type Midgets. With twin-carburettor B-series engine, independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering, the differences were night and day. Initially offered with the 1489cc, four cylinder, B-Series ohv engine with 68bhp, but uprated to MGA 1600 specification in May 1959. Lockheed front discs made their first appearance with the larger 80bhp engine, significantly improving braking. Revered today and valued significantly ahead of the MGB.

Toyota 200 GT (1965 - 1970) The Toyota 2000GT is a limited-production, front-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-seat, hardtop coupé grand tourer designed by Toyota in collaboration with Yamaha. First displayed to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965, the 2000GT was manufactured under contract by Yamaha between 1967 and 1970. In Japan, it was exclusive to Toyota’s Japanese retail sales channel called Toyota Store. The 2000GT is seen as the first seriously collectible Japanese car and the first “Japanese supercar”.

Austin-Healey (1952 - 1972)

Austin-Healey was a British sports car maker. The marque was established through a joint-venture arrangement, set up in 1952 between Leonard Lord of the Austin division of the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and the Donald Healey Motor Company, a renowned automotive engineering and design firm. Austin-Healey cars were produced until 1972. The 3000 Mark III was launched in October 1963. Classified as the BJ8, the new model was the most powerful and luxurious of the big Healeys, with a walnut-veneer dash, wind-up windows, and a 150 hp (112 kW) engine.

Mazda Cosmo (1967) On May 30, 1967, Mazda commenced sales of the world’s first dualrotor RE car, the Cosmo Sport and has since produced almost two million rotary engined vehicles. The first wankel-engined auto was an NSU (now Audi) Wankel Spider in 1964, and though Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Norton, Suzuki, General Motors, Citroen, John Deere and Arctic Cat all experimented with some even producing small runs of wankel engined machinery, the only manufacturer to produce the engine designed by German engineer Felix Wankel in quantities remains as Mazda. --- Mountain Bikes ------------

M

ountain bikes are typically ridden on track trails and other unpaved environments. These types of terrain commonly include rocks, beaches, washouts, loose sand, loose gravel and steep grades. Mountain bikes are built to handle this terrain and the obstacles that are found in it like logs, vertical drop offs, and smaller boulders. Mountain bike construction differs from a typical bicycle in many ways. The most noticeable differences are the inclusion of suspension on the frame (rear) and fork ( front), larger knobby tires, more durable heavy duty wheels, more powerful brakes, and lower gear ratios needed for steep grades with poor traction, up to 21 gears.

-----------------

-----------

In Thailand the mountain bikes are getting more popular and in Hua Hin we can see groups of enthusiasts practically daily on some trip or tour.

THAI LEGAL

DRIVING A CAR OR A MOTORCYCLE IN THAILAND.

L

ike many other countries, a driver’s license is required before someone can drive on any road in Thailand. A Thai driver’s license is issued by the Department of Land Transport - Ministry of Transport and can be used throughout the Kingdom of Thailand and other ASEAN states. The minimum age to drive a motor vehicle is 18 years old and 15 years old for a motorcycle. Unlike most countries, there is no provisional or learner’s license in Thailand. Drivers who wish to obtain a driver’s license have to either learn through driving school or at their own risk for not having a driving license. Driver’s license candidates should set aside two full days for training and testing at the Department of Transport Office. In Hua Hin and Cha Am some private instructors may offer driving lessons including license registration and car rental for approximately HB 5000, all in. Law offices are usually informed about these instructors an can help you. Once you have been in Thailand for a period extending 3 months, you will need an Thai driving license, even though international drivers licenses are legally accepted. Several insurance companies have a fine print stating that the driver should hold a valid Thai driving license to be fully covered. Besides that: You’ll offer the local law enforcement great opportunities by continuing to drive with an international license. On the positive site: a domestic Thai drivers license can, sometimes, be used to avoid paying the typical “farang prices”. A Thai driver’s license is then accepted as sort of proof that the holder is not a tourist. Having a Thai drivers license may sometimes also make the police slightly more lenient towards the fact that expats cannot carry their passport at all times. Qualifying Requirements Being of sound mind and good health (not having physical or mental handicap(s) that will prevent them from operating a vehicle safely) being at least 18 years of age The applicant must hold a valid NonImmigrant Visa (tourists can not apply). What you will need when applying for your Thai drivers license: If you can not read and / nor understand the Thai language, you are allowed to bring an interpreter to fill the forms and translate the possible instruction class and tests. APPR OACH M AGAZINE

38

Valid Passport with Valid Non-immigrant Visa - Signed copies of the passport’s first page, the page with the current non-immigrant visa, the page with the last entry stamp and the TM-card. A certified letter of address from the Immigration Bureau (document can not be older than 30 days). Tip : If you are working in Thailand: the blue workbook, better known as your work permit, can replace either of these documents and serve as address verification! A doctor’s certificate stating that the applicant is in good health, both physically and mentally (standard forms are available from most clinics and should not be more than 30 days old) 2 photos, 1 x 1 inch and not older than 6 months (photo service is available on the premises). Valid international driver’s license plus signed photocopy or translated regular driving licence from the applicant’s home country, certified by Embassy or consulate. (if available). Note that 1 set of these documents is required per licence applications. However, when applying for both a car and a motorcycle license, an extra copy of the doctor’s certificate and the letter of address will suffice for the second application. Application Procedure After another administrative action they will direct you towards the test area on the 3rd floor, where you will need to pass 3 tests: Colour Blindness Test: One of the officials will point to colour dots on a poster and you should responds by stating the dot’s colour. Answers in Thai are preferred but generally English words are understood as well. Reflex Test: Be seated behind an alternative gas and brake pedal and push the accelerator until the green led’s start to light up. Hit the brake pedal before the led’s reach the red zone. You will have to repeat this test twice. Depth Perception Test: Use forward and back buttons to align a moving pin with a fixed one, in a small box at app. 10 meters distance. Initially it looks more confusing than it actually is. If you have passed all of these tests, your documents will be signed and handed back to you, at this point. Handover your documents and your passport and / or work permit, if that was used for address verification. 2 signatures later you will be the proud owner of a 1 year temporary Thai driver’s license. After 1 year, you can apply for a 5 years licence before the 1 year licence expires ! OC TOB ER 2013

ROMEO AND JULIET by the Geneva Ballet Joëlle Bouvier’s creation evokes, the eternal story of the lovers from Verona, leaning on extracts from three suites for orchestra taken by composer Sergei Prokofiev himself from his ballet Romeo and Juliet. For Joëlle Bouvier, it is not the picturesque and historical aspect of the script of Prokofiev’s ballet that counts, but the universality of the fable — the reason why her performance does not put on stage a precise era. She has decided not to choreograph the entirety of the ballet by the Russian composer, in order to concentrate on the essential articulations of the drama. Throughout this performance, dance speaks directly to the heart and to the emotion of the spectator.

Vegetarian Festival 2013

OCTOBER 5-14

In October, the Thailand Vegetarian Festival 2013 takes place for nine days. In general, throughout Thailand this is a spiritual festival with abstinence and purity as the central motif. While vegetarian food is widely available throughout Thailand, special menus and dishes are prepared and available for the nine-day festival in many restaurants throughout Thailand. Vegetarianism includes avoidance of certain vegetables such as garlic and onion which are seen to increase agitation. The festival has its roots in Chinese Taoist practices but has become more Thai and welcomed by the Thai Buddhist population who (to some degree) also embrace vegetarianism.

OCTOBER MOVIES

Set against the sexy, glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing in the 1970s, the film is based on the true story of a great sporting rivalry between handsome English playboy James Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Austrian driver Niki Lauda The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error: if you make a mistake, you die. Director: Ron Howard, Actors: Daniel Brühl, Chris Hemsworth, Olivia Wilde If like me you did not live during Princess Diana’s time then the movie appears to be a new story, until a little bit of research settles the simple fact that Diana is just not being left to rest in peace. The latest film portrayal of Princess Diana is played by Naomi Watts and is based on the book Diana: Her Last Love. This film focuses on Diana’s supposed romance with Pakistani surgeon Dr Khan. The accuracy of this possibility has caused the film to be recognised as a controversial disaster and Khan himself who still lives and works in Britain claimed that the film was “completely wrong”. The Guardian called Diana “excruciatingly well intentioned”, The Times stated it was “atrocious and intrusive” and The Daily Mail said, “It never succeeds in being moving, or even involving. It’s not even enjoyably bad.” Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel, Actors: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews, Geraldine James

APPROACH REVIEW Wrath of God is referenced in the book throughout the course of his life. The books are never explicit in the year in which they’re set, although there are sometimes references to real-world events, such as the changing American presidency. In The Fallen Angel, Allon makes references to meeting Chiara ten years prior, which roughly matches up to the books’ annual releases. However some titles, especially Moscow Rules and The Defector take place within greater proximity to one another based on the books’ events. In an interview that coincided with the release of Moscow Rules, Silva revealed he heard an art professional quote Allon and some real-world news accounts make reference to the Allon series and wonder whether the specific news will become part of the series.

Daniel Silva

RENOWNED JOURNALIST AND AUTHOR

D

aniel Silva began his writing career as a journalist for

United Press International (UPI), traveling in the Middle East and covering the Iran-Iraq war, terrorism and

political conflicts. From UPI he moved to CNN, where he eventually became executive producer of its Washington-based public policy programming. In 1994 he began work on his first novel, The Unlikely Spy, a surprise best seller that won critical acclaim. He turned to writing full time in 1997 and all of his books have been New York Times/national best sellers, translated into 25 languages and published across Europe and the world. Among His Main Works Are: - The Messenger (2006) Portrait of a Spy (2011) - The Fallen Angel (2012) - The English Girl (2013) - Moscow Rules (2008) - The Defector (2009) - The Rembrandt Affair (2010). Gabriel Allon is the main protagonist in Daniel Silva’s thriller and

espionage series that focuses on Israeli intelligence. The main characters refer to their employer as the Office, although it is not specified that it is Mossad (despite that in reality, internally in the Israeli intelligence community Mossad is colloquially referred to as HaMisrad,) which literally translates into English as, ‘the Office’. Allon’s career began in 1972 when he, Eli Lavon and several others were plucked from civilian life by Ari Shamron to participate in Operation Wrath of God, an act of vengeance to hunt down and eliminate those responsible for killing the Israel athletes in Munich.

Daniel About His Books

In 2000, after publishing The Marching Season, the second book in the Michael Osbourne series, I decided it was time for a change. We were nearing the end of the Clinton administration, and the president was about to embark on a final, last-ditch effort to bring peace to the Middle East. I had the broad outlines of a story in mind. It was the story of a hard-line Palestinian terrorist who wanted to torpedo the peace process by carrying out a wave of high-profile attacks in Europe and America. And it was the story of an Israeli assassin and intelligence officer who would be given the assignment of stopping him. The Palestinian would be called Tariq al-Hourani. The Israeli, as yet, had no name, and I thought long and hard before giving him one. I wanted it to be biblical, like my own. I finally decided to name him after the archangel Gabriel. It is a beautiful name, and it is filled with much religious and historical symbolism. Gabriel is the mightiest of God’s angels and His most important messenger. He is the prince of fire and the guardian of Israel. And, perhaps most important, Gabriel is the angel of revenge. I decided that Gabriel’s last name should short, simple, and somewhat neutral: Allon. In Hebrew, it means “oak tree.” I liked the image it conveyed, for Gabriel Allon was definitely solid as an oak. Among His Main Works with the Gabriel Allon Character Are: - The Kill Artist (2000) - The English Assassin (2002) The Confessor (2003) - A Death in Vienna (2004) Prince of Fire (2005) - The Messenger (2006) - The Secret Servant (2007) - Moscow Rules (2008) - The Defector (2009) - The Rembrandt Affair (2010) - Portrait of a Spy (2011) - The Fallen Angel (2012) and The English Girl (2013).

APPROACH REVIEW

Now You See Me

N

(PG) 2013

ow You See Me isn’t a run-of-the-mill film with gross “magic” acts that make audiences wince or be sick. Nor is it a typical crime or mystery movie. In fact, defining exactly what Now You See Me is, is a puzzle of its own, which is perhaps what makes the film compelling. The stars of the show are the Four Horsemen, played by Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco. The Four Horsemen are a group of solo magicians that within a year have incredibly come together and are putting benefactor, Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine). When the Four Horsemen, perform the trick that earns them publicity outside magician’s circles, and rob a bank, a FBI and an Interpol agent (Mark Ruffalo and Melanie Laurent) get involved in the case, as does Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman), a retired magician who exposes the ins and outs of magician’s illusions. Through these characters Now You See Me explores what illusion and magic is. The film is impossible, unpredictable, and yes, magical. I recommended Now You See Me for mature adolescents and adults. Although rated PG, parents please note there is some strong language, violence and sexual references and things not to try at home.

Ingrid Michaelson

Q

uirky and successful independent pop artist, Ingrid Michaelson, grew up on Staten Island, New York, with dreams to be a comedic actress. Her mother was a sculptor and her father a classical composer. Michaelson explored music from a young age learning to play piano, guitar, ukulele and vocal skills. Her childhood was spent honing her acting skills in a children’s musical theatre company. At university, she studied acting and wrote songs on the side. Then she came across something in music that fulfilled her unlike acting and switched career paths. Michaelson sings about love and creates gorgeous melodies each time. She has developed her own record label, Cabin 24, allowing her the freedom to keep her integrity. She has teamed up with charities like Musicians on Call and Stand Up To Cancer. Her music has featured on the television, films and commercials. Ingrid Michaelson has released 6 albums and has many published songbooks for vocals, piano, guitar and ukulele. In an interview with All Things New England, Michaelson explains how her theatre experience helps her live performances. Ingrid says “I like making people laugh” and strives to do so onstage. Michaelson is not a party girl however, and unwinds from a show by getting into her pyjamas as soon as possible. One of Ingrid’s interests is baking and when she steps away from being a professional singer, she plans to open her own bakery with brick walls and oriental rugs, selling non-processed foods and vegan choices.

Some of Ingrid Michaelson’s Best Albums Slow the Rain (2005) Slow the Rain is beautiful and brave. The main elements of this album are piano, basic percussion, crisp vocal melodies and some slight vibrato. Girls and Boys (2007) This album expands the range of percussion to include clapping, tambourines, and bongo drums. It also uses keyboards, acoustic and electric guitar. The music is bright and optimistic. Human Again (2012) Michaelson’s most recent release has a twinge of melancholy to it but sparkles with strong string playing, Ingrid’s soaring voice and her endearing metaphors. Ingrid Michaelson’s songs are appropriate for all ages, although there are some cases of purely suggestive lyrics. OC TOB ER 2013

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Getting & Staying in Shape BEST WORKOUT FOODS WORKOUT FOODS.

AND

WORSE

Don’t wait any longer than one hour after your exercise to refuel. If you wait two hours, you will reduce the body’s ability to refill muscle stores by 50 percent. If you work out away from home, bring something with you to eat when you are finished.

I

f getting in shape and staying in shape requires the proper balance of exercise and healthy food, how can we best maximize our workouts by eating the right foods before, during and after exercising?

Best Before-Workout Foods According to Owen, about 70% of energy in a pre-workout meal should be comprised of carbs, but this means quality carbs. Try these three great pre-workout snacks/meals for optimal performance and energy. Cottage Cheese and Berries – 1/2 cup of cottage cheese mixed with 1/2 cup of berries is a great pre-workout snack. You can add a banana if you need added endurance. Consume this tasty mixture about an hour before working out. Veggie Omelet - use 2 whole eggs, onions, mushrooms and pepper and fry your omelet in coconut oil. Consume two hours before exercise and add a grapefruit if you are going to be doing a lot of cardio work. Mocha Protein Shake – mix 1 cup of organic iced coffee with 1 cup of whey protein and blend. Consume 30 – 60 minutes before you workout

Why Eat Before a Workout? You will burn about the same amount of fat whether you eat before a workout or you don’t. Personal trainer and nutrition researcher Patrick Owen PhD. states that you can actually promote muscle loss if you work out on an empty stomach. This is somewhat contrary to some of the advice circulating which states that you can better mobilize fat stores when you work out on an empty stomach. The problem with this, states Owen is that the fat that is used for workouts comes from deep within muscles, not from surface fat stores. Once exercise is completed, any fats not oxidized return to the adipose tissue. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology notes that nitrogen losses from protein breakdown doubled when exercise occurred in a fasting state. This makes it very difficult to build muscle mass

Best After-Workout Foods According to health experts, optimizing your sensitivity to insulin is the key for maintaining optimal health. Eating fewer carbohydrates after exercise can help increase your insulin sensitivity. Animal protein provides amino acids and, along with carbohydrates from vegetables, will help to rebuild glycogen stores. Try these three post workout foods for best results: Chicken and Salad – a palm-size piece of pasture raised chicken along with a dark and leafy green salad made with spinach or Swiss chard Organic Eggs and Fruit – make some scrambled free range eggs and have a side of mixed fruit such as apricots, plums, cantaloupes or berries Whey Protein Shake – an organic whey protein shake and a cup of organic peas or beans

When you are hungry, your body dives into self preservation mode and draws protein from the muscle instead of from the liver and kidneys. Because of this, you lose muscle mass, which in the end slows your metabolism and makes it much harder to lose weight. This is basic physiology. You are not doing yourself any benefits working out on an empty stomach.

Why Eat After a Workout? While exercising, your body uses fuel stored in your muscles called glycogen for energy. After you have finished your exercise session, muscles are depleted of glycogen stores and are broken down. Eating or drinking something that contains high quality carbohydrates and proteins 30 minutes to an hour after you have finished working out builds and repairs muscles that were broken down and fuels your metabolic furnace. APPR OACH M AGAZINE

Worst Workout Foods Stay clear of these foods as they offer no nutritional value and will not help you maximize your workout efforts: Fruit juices - Energy drinks Vitamin water - Sports drinks - High-sugar protein/ energy bars Candy - Highly processed foods - “Sugar-free” foods – Diet Drinks – Zero Drinks (Aspartame contents) 48

SPORT

Smartphone Golf THE BEST SMARTPHONE APPS THAT IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME.

G

olfing is one of those addictive yet highly frustrating sports that can leave you feeling like a PGA pro one day and a novice the next. In golf, practice sometimes

makes perfect, but any round can have a mind of its own regardless of how many hours you’ve put into the range. If anything though, true golfers are dedicated to the craft and will doggedly continue on their quest for the perfect swing. Approach Magazine has lined out 5 best golf apps available today.

1. Golfshot: Golf GPS Knowing the layout of the course and each hole is essential for every golfer’s game. With a GPS-enabled app like Golfshot, which tracks more than 35,000 courses worldwide, you have immediate access to aerial views, distances to the hole from any spot and exact placement of the pin for better accuracy. The app comes with a handicap calculator, and once stroke information is inputted, it automatically creates statistical graphs that map your performance and makes it easy to track for improvement on future rounds. Yes, it’s a hefty price tag, but it’s cheaper than a single round of golf and will certainly put you on the right track to better play. It’s also available for Android phones.

2. V1 Golf There’s a reason why golfing instructors always incorporate video into lessons – it’s the only way to show you those pesky mistakes in your swing. Video is an important learning tool, which is why V1 Golf incorporates it so prominently. This app not only lets you analyze your own swing, but also lets you compare swings from pros and figure out what adjustments you need to make to stop hooking your drives. You can draw planes on the video screen to see how straight your line is, do split-screens to compare swings and watch in slow motion to see every single movement. It’s also available on Android phones.

APPR OACH M AGAZINE

3. Golf Genie Practice Drills This app acts like your virtual golf instructor and provides a whole slew of practice drills for your full swing and short game. Designed by PGA Tour pros, it also provides specific solutions and drills to address common swing faults like hooking, pulling, pushing and slicing. You can use the customization features to pick and choose which drills you’d like to focus on and then create your own personalized practice routine. It’s also available for BlackBerry phones.

4. The Rules of Golf There are lots and lots of rules in golf, and there will be a time — if there hasn’t been already — when you’re playing with someone who is ALL about the rules. In those instances, it’s helpful to have a definitive guide to golf. There’s no better authority than the USGA Rules of Golf app. It gets into the nitty gritty of golf so that the next time you’re playing with a stickler who raises a stink about how you re-dropped a dropped ball without penalty because it landed on the putting green, you can whip out Rule 20-2 and prove him wrong. It’s also available for Android phones.

5. Golf Digest Tips Plus Golf Digest is one of the premier golf magazines. It makes sense that it would have a premier app as well. Tips Plus covers everything from swing mechanics, putting, short game, strategy and golf exercises and also features commentary from the best coaches like Hank Haney, David Leadbetter and Jim Flick. There are accompanying videos for the tips (which unfortunately didn’t work for me), but also text that details helpful advice every golfer should know.

GETTING FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER IN THE MOST EFFICIENT MANNER.

by Matt Adcock

Professional Swimming Trainer & Instructor

Y

ou may have seen an exciting chase scene in a movie where people are effortlessly scaling walls or jumping across rooftops. You may have seen human beings moving as though nothing can get in their way, displaying amazing skill, timing and strength. If you have seen this, then you have seen Parkour. Parkour is about getting from one place to another in the most efficient manner possible, without the use of any equipment, except for your mind and body. Parkour training allows people to negotiate obstacles and decide the best method for getting past them, with an emphasis on fluid, limber movements. The aim is to quickly and efficiently overcome obstacles using only your body and the surroundings to propel yourself further, maintaining as much momentum as possible in a safe manner.

This can include running, jumping, climbing, swinging, vaulting and rolling. Many also refer to this discipline as ‘Free Running’, but to the devoted practitioners of these disciplines, there is a difference, with the emphasis in Free Running to be more about self-expression, generally involving more acrobatics, whilst Parkour is about overcoming the obstacles in the most efficient manner possible. The earliest form of Parkour in history was defined by Georges Hebert, a naval officer in the French army who served during both World Wars. Because he was a soldier, he often travelled to Africa, where he was impressed by the efficient, flowing athletic movements of most of the African tribes he visited.

GOLF &

SPORT When he returned to France, he began to develop a method of natural movement for officers serving in the military, in which both men and women were trained to move efficiently and fluently around a wide variety of obstacles in their path. The discipline called ‘méthode naturelle’ started to be regularly taught in the military, and soon became the basis for all French Military training. Later French Soldiers developed what came to be known as ‘parcours du combattant’ (‘the path of the Warrior’). The most well known founding figure of Parkour is David Belle, who learned all about the Military training methods from his father, Raymond, a former soldier in the French Special Forces. David combined what he learnt from his father, with his knowledge of gymnastics and martial arts. All of this, along with a change in the spelling of the French word ‘parcours’ became Parkour. With his good friend Sebastian Foucan, David Belle established the first ever group of traceurs, (people who practice Parkour). They called themselves the Yamikazi, and film maker, Luc Besson created a film called ‘The Yamikazi’, which accelerated the growth of the sport in Europe. Since then Parkour has become very popular in Europe mostly due to Belle and Foucan continually appearing in films and documentaries. However, it wasn’t until the release of the James Bond movie ‘Casino Royale’ in 2006 featuring Sebastian Foucan in a chase scene at the beginning of the film, that the rest of the world began to take notice. Today there are Parkour groups and associations in most major Capital cities around the world. I spoke with Chris Sotiriou, a Director of Parkour Generations Asia, based in Bangkok. Parkour Generations Asia was established in Bangkok early 2012 by Stephane Vigroux, an accomplished Parkour practioner. Casino Royale (2006)

“Parkour was only just becoming known when we launched Parkour Generations Asia. Unfortunately, though what was known about it was mostly from movies and You-Tube. People had the wrong perception about Parkour, seeing it only as people jumping from roofs, and doing tricks.” Explains Chris. “However through our teaching and communications with the media, we are beginning to adjust this misconception of the sport. It is a discipline involving a much deeper approach, involving a more complete physical training for the body that is truly functional. Working on strengths, agility, balance, coordination, spacial awareness and other core attributes, as well as challenging your mind. You discover new movement patterns through managed risk, and you learn to control your fear by better understanding your body’s ability as you progress.” “Now we have teaching programs at a number of international schools, and this month we will be guest speakers at the Asia Fitness Convention, and will be delivering workshops during the 3 days of the convention” - Chris PKG. Parkour Generations Asia can be found via their website www. pkgasia.com and provide both group and private tuition. They encourage anyone interested in learning more to get in touch with them directly. Attempting some Parkour moves without proper training or instruction could result in injury therefore it is best to learn from the professionals. Even if you are only in Bangkok for a short time, it would be worthwhile going along to a class to learn some basics, especially since your first class with Parkour Generations Asia is free.

Recipes CHALLENGE RATE SCALE: 1/5 = easy and quick 2/5= simple 3/5= simple but takes effort/time 4/5= challenging 5/5=difficult and/or time consuming

Rosemary and Garlic Flatbread Challenge Rate: 3/5 Serves 4-8 Ingredients: Flatbread is faster than making a loaf of bread and just as good if you use the freshest ingredients. The preparation and cooking times overlap but the entire process takes about 50 minutes. The process is divided into two parts, and needs to sit for 20 minutes before it can be cooked. However if you prepare this early you can wait until 15 or 20 minutes before you are ready to serve your meal to divide the dough and throw them on the pan. Rosemary and garlic is one scrumptious combination of flavour but other herbs and spices are also nice. Flatbread may be eaten with soup, or as a snack. You may also use flatbread dough as a pizza base, by skipping Part 2 of the Method and applying the usual pizza ingredients, then cook in the oven at 250 degrees C until crispy.

Tip: Use organic ingredients where possible as it is tastier, better for our health and the earth. Each ingredient that I have labeled organic has previously been found in Hua Hin as organic. Biodynamic, unsprayed, chemical-free and wild-crafted, are also good choices. Method: Phase 1 Mix together flour, baking powder, salt, garlic, rosemary and sesame seeds (if desired) with a fork. (Leave a little flour aside for dusting.) Make a well in the centre and pour in olive oil and three quarters of the warm water. With your fork, gently combine ingredients. Add more water if it feels too dry. Wet your hands and bring the mixture together into a nice ball of dough. Dust a clean surface with flour and then dust your hands with flour also. Knead the dough with your hands until it is smooth and elastic. Put a light dusting of flour in the bowl and place the dough back into the bowl. Dust the top of the dough with a little more flour, then cover with a cloth and leave the dough to relax for at least 20 minutes.

• 300g organic spelt flour • Organic flour for dusting • ¾ tsp. sea salt • 1 tbsp. baking powder • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed or finely chopped • 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary • 1 tbsp. organic white sesame seeds (optional) • 3 tbsp. organic extra-virgin cold pressed olive oil • Olive oil for cooking • 200ml semi-boiled drinking water

Method: Phase 2 When you are ready to begin the cooking process, divide the dough by using your thumb and finger to squeeze the dough into halves, twist the dough gently to break apart. Repeat this method with each new ball of dough until you have eight balls of dough. Lightly oil your hands with olive oil. Roll a ball of dough in your hands and pat a little bit of flour onto the dough. Using your palm to hold the dough, rotate your fingers around the edge and press to flatten out. Slap the dough from one hand to the other so that your hands are criss-crossed when they meet. Once the flatbread is about a centimetre thick, heat a stainless steel fry pan to medium heat on the stove and drizzle some olive oil onto the surface. Place the flatbread onto the pan making sure they don’t stick. Keep the heat at medium to low and allow the flatbread to puff a little. Check the underside with a pair of thongs and when it is golden and crispy flip over and allow the other side to cook until also golden. Whilst your flatbread it cooking repeat the flattening process with the other balls of dough. When your flatbread is cooked on both sides put into a bowl or basket lined with a tea-towel and wrap the flatbread up to keep it warm. Serve whilst they are warm with your meal. World-class programs such as Laureate English Program & Laureate Hospitality Programs. At Stamford, every day is a truly cross-cultural experience, using real English in speaking, playing and learning. Everyone is encouraged to speak, role play and study using real world English so that when students graduate, they are able to interview for a job, read a book or just talk with friends in truly fluent English. English language proficiency is a key priority, along with cross-cultural communication skills, strong leadership traits and critical thinking and problem solving skills. With the ASEAN membership urging countries to integrate their documents, procedures and policies in the English language, the Laureate English Program (LEP), which was co-developed with leaders in the field of English language teaching - Cambridge University Press, Cambridge ESOL and Bell Educational Services is especially highly essential and effective. Stamford offers tailored programmes as well on their Bangkok Campus such as: A preparatory pre-degree program - of 4 levels: 8 weeks per level. In Hua Hin, specialized English instructions throughout the degree programs are offered. With a modern 3 semester program structure, Stamford’s students can earn a Bachelor’s Degree in 3 years and Master’s Degree in 1 year or 18 months, enabling students to go into careers earlier.

KIDS & EDUCATION Webster University As an International campus of Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, Webster University Thailand (WUT) embraces the Mission and Scope of the main campus. However, WUT has extended that vision to include “an accredited American University operating in Southeast Asia to create future leaders for a multicultural world”. Thailand is a small international university that offers education with a global outlook, part of a network of seven US-accredited campuses under the leadership of Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. In the School of Business and Technology, Webster-Thailand currently offers undergraduate degrees in Business Administration, Management, Management with emphasis on International Business, and Management with emphasis on Marketing. In the Webster School of Communications, the Webster-Thailand campus offers undergraduate degrees in Media Communications and Advertising/ Marketing.

Silipakorn University and International College Located in the famous seaside district between Cha-am and Hua Hin, the Campus is surrounded by beautiful and green ambience, hills, golf courses and sandy beaches only 2 hours drive from Bangkok. The College aims to offer the effective programs in higher education degrees and create graduates who are qualified and competent to work internationally. SUIC has been working closely with international leading institutes to set programs for undergraduates in English. Therefore students can study in Thailand and practise under supervision of professionals within proper classes, well-equipped settings, and well-designed environment to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

In the Webster College of Arts and Sciences, it offers undergraduate degrees in International Relations and Psychology. In addition, students may opt to add an academic minor to any of their degree programs. Webster-Thailand offers minors in a wide range of subjects, including Computer Applications, Political Science, Mathematics, and Religious Studies.

Silpakorn University was originally established as the School of Fine Arts under the Fine Arts Department. Its development owed much to a devoted Italian Artist, known in Thai as Professor Silpa Bhirasri. Now Silpakorn has become a full grown university offering degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels in all major fields of art and design, science and technology, health science, social sciences and humanities, and music.

Webster-Thailand currently offers three masters degree programs: Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Masters in International Relations (MAIR), and a Masters of Media Communications. Webster-Thailand also has offices and classroom facilities at the Bangkok Center in the Maneeya Building in Bangkok’s business district. Courses in the MBA and MAIR program are taught there so that working professionals in Bangkok can participate in these degree programs.

The Bangkok campus specializes in delivering International Double Degree Programs that include the opportunity to gain international study and work experience. SUIC offers programs that not only prepare students with theoretical and practical knowledge, but also with the right industry connections and problem solving skills. The International Business (MBA) program was created to fulfill the ever-growing need of human resources who are versed and capable of succeeding in a globalized environment. The duration of this program is four semesters (a total of two years) with convenient weekend class sessions. This allows students to work and study. As part of this MBA students are required to participate in a study tour to Sydney and attend lessons at the University of Technology Sydney as well as industrial visits. This study trip is organized by UTS and managed jointly between UTS and SUIC. The program subscribes to a “problem-based learning approach” where students are actively engaged and play a major role in the learning process. Each semester students can enroll in up to four subjects.

The Thailand campus currently has students from Asia, Europe, Africa, and America. About 35% of the students are from America and there are a number of students from other campuses in the Webster network and students on Study Abroad programs. Students at both Webster-Thailand and Stamford University have several options regarding housing. The universities maintain student housing at beachfront condominium complexes on the outskirts of Hua Hin and provide tour-bus transportation to and from the campusses and also to and from Hua Hin town and the main shopping centers. Students can also arrange to rent housing in Hua Hin town individually.
