Preventing Efflorescence I am quite sure that you have all seen efflorescence (salt) exuding from building structures in the past. The containment is crucial.
EVOSEAL, EVO BLOCKSEAL and EVO TRAFFICSEAL are worldwide accredited and tested permanent water based waterproofing penetrates to 40 psi.
This is attributed to an uneducated building practice in relation to waterproofing. Efflorescence is generally a white crystalline substance which has not been activated for various reasons during the initial hydration process (free lime content) that can also turn into a solid carbonation deposit.
Evo is not a silane, silane derivative or acrylic base composition like those of the past. Use with most porous masonry elements.
This free lime is carried to the surface either by continuous water flowing through the structure or through the process of evaporation. Not only is this an aesthetic issue, but can nearly always be related to the decomposition and erosion of structural elements. By minimizing the entry points of water ingress at construction time, in turn will inhibit the movement of efflorescence to the structures surface and will consolidate where it should be initially.

NATURE PLAY WE HELP YOU
CREATE
Jervois Street Playground - City of Marion, SA Designed by City of Marion - play items by Moduplay and others
Easily harness the natural play experience with your next play project More than ever before our children need opportunities to engage freely with natural play elements. For most play area owners the challenge is how to get the right blend of natural play elements whilst minimising the maintenance needed. This requires a comprehensive approach that accommodates all of the major considerations when designing Natural Play areas. It’s common to see “natural play” projects that started out with the best of intentions but soon lost their appeal to children by becoming a barren and worn out site of dirt mounds, isolated rocks and forgotten climbing logs. Part of the secret to a successful outcome is to ensure the pathways and entry points are constructed from durable, natural materials
that complement the charm of the intended play elements, yet retain their serviceability long term. The Moduplay Nature Play designers and craftsmen are passionate about providing Natural Play elements that are intriguing to children whilst providing many opportunities to engage physically and mentally so the benefit of the Natural Play area is truly realised.

The Riverside Retreat
In Design International’s New studio in Melbourne!
Since relocating to Melbourne and establishing commercial premises in Abbotsford, Penny del Castillo and her design team have been humbled by the warm welcome and constant compliments from industry professionals and clients alike who simply cannot contain their charming accolades for the design practice of IN DESIGN INTERNATIONAL.
First impressions in the reception entry make a strong statement with the use of Biowood panelling 180 x 33 on the ceilings
In Design International Melbourne Quarters (IDI MQ) found its way to Abbotsford along the Yarra River just over one year ago and has become affectionately known by family and friends as "The Riverside Retreat"! The stunning geographical location and fitout is in absolute contrast to the anticipated inner city address. "By intention, there is an ambience upon arrival that transports our guests to lead them to wonder whether they have landed at an international boutique hotel lobby or they are checking into a spa!" says Penny. "We have specialised in resort hotels and high end residential properties for some years now so it felt both appropriate and advantageous to adopt that dynamic into our own studio to showcase our talents in converting the "average" to the spectacularly unexpected!!" The building was in a fairly poor state of repair when IDI took it over - a true renovators delight! Or as Penny would say "in perfect condition to completely trash without an ounce of guilt!" Ultimately this ugly duckling provided Penny and the team with a blank canvas to apply their clever practical spatial planning skills and the understated elegant IDI signature look that they are renowned for. The creative space has proven to be productive, inviting and relaxing for the staff and visitors alike. Ultimately as interior designers, this team are all about service and making people feel comfortable. After some 25 years in the industry Penny has a wealth of knowledge and understanding of all things interior – “from inception to completion we immaculately detail each assignment to authenticate our clients' desired unique look." IDI specialise in spatial planning and flow through, capitalising on all aspects of functionality first before developing the aesthetic side of decoration. "We strive to ensure our clients enjoy the total process of design, whereby they absolutely love the journey & the end result of our professional input. We set the tone by maintaining the company policy not to do business without pleasure!" IDI’s reputation is a result of strongly forged connections to repeat clients and building partners in Queensland and now they welcome the exciting opportunity to collaborate with local industry professional to include their unique services now available in Melbourne. IDI partners extensively with industry consultants such as architects, landscape designers, lighting, sound & hydraulic engineers to achieve what may often seem impossible! 9

Foster + Partners Ferring Pharmaceuticals Soundport Headquarters The groundbreaking ceremony for the new country headquarters for Ferring Pharamceuticals A/S in Denmark was held today, 5th September 2106, attended by Henrik Zimino, Mayor of Tarnby; Frederik Paulsen, Chairman, and Marianne Kock, Managing Director, Ferring Pharmaceuticals A/S; and Grant Brooker, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners. The ceremony marked the start of construction of the 39,000 square-metre company offices which is set for completion in 2019. Located on the urban fringe of Copenhagen in Kastrup, the site occupies a pivotal waterfront position alongside the Øresund crossing between Copenhagen and Malmö, and is next to Copenhagen International Airport. Bordered by predominantly low-rise development, it affords fantastic views towards Malmö and the Swedish coast – where the company was founded. The building sits on a large stone plinth which acts as the first line of defence against floods and integrates the design of street furniture and landscape elements. The lightweight glass building ‘floats’ above, in contrast to the heavy plinth below. The six stacked floors and roof canopy cantilever out to further capture the surrounding views and create self-shaded spaces on each floor. Grant Brooker, who led the design of the building said, “We wanted to create a very strong base that directly connects to and celebrates this unique waterside location and lifts the building above that level so that there are uninterrupted views from the ground floor to the strait and the surrounding harbour.” 24
The triangular form of the building is driven by the shape of the site, surrounded by water on all sides. At the heart of the building is a generous internal atrium with panoramic views, comprising an entrance lobby, café and break-out space, as well as catered conference facilities and space for social events. Access to the floors above is via a feature staircase or glass lifts that further animate the atrium space. The layout of the interior spaces was derived from indepth studies of Ferring’s way of working. Through observation and targeted interviews, the design team gained valuable insight into the processes involved in the development of pharmaceutics, creating workspaces that are tailored to the company’s specific requirements. Offices and laboratories – for quiet, individual work – are situated on the edges, to take advantage of the views and natural light, while more collaborative meeting spaces are located towards the centre, overlooking the top-lit atrium and other social spaces creating a vibrant core of the building throughout each level. Brooker recalls that, “For such a significant project it was vital that the building reflected the personality of the organisation and that it would create a collaborative and flexible working environment to carry them through the next century.” The building façade has a very strong horizontal emphasis, in consonance with the surrounding low-rise urban fabric. The technical plant and building cores are incorporated into the cantilevering roof form, giving it a sleek profile. The geometry of the atrium roof is a formArchi-Tech Services Pty Ltd
found, glazed catenary gridshell, reflecting the forces acting upon it, allowing for thin, lightweight structural members. Daylight streams into the interior spaces, creating a lightfilled, unique workplace that brings the whole range of Ferring’s activities under one roof. Brooker added, “As we break ground today we embark on the next stage of this project’s exciting journey. Working with the Ferring team and the authorities here in Copenhagen has been an absolute pleasure and along with our collaborating engineers and designers, we look forward to realising this extraordinary building.” INSITE - Spring 2016

ALAN DELMAS - Graduate of Architecture The Retreat
The Retreat is an imagine private getaway cabin hidden is a semi-remote snowy forest. It's a place where one can go to forget about the outside world, to relax, recuperate, unplug and reconnect with nature. A key part of The Retreat is the sitting room, a cosy space for reading, resting, keeping warm, relaxing with a hot beverage and gazing into the flames and the scenery. The open fronted Heatseeker 600 was perfect to fulfil this rold, with detailed Spanish front, 3-sided black trim, cermaic coals and logs, conventional flue and radiant fan assisted convection heat. Power for the fireplace is concealed in the window framing while the gas supply pipe is cast into the slab. Small ventilation grilles are positioned in the walls to the left and right of the fireplace, ensuring adequate air supply to the space.
64
The result is a generously sized rectangular fireplace with an elegantly angled chimney element that both stands out from and fits into its context.
2 ND PRIZE $4000 LACHLAN ANDERSON Victorian terrace We sought to provide a solution to a common problem - a chimney breast within a residential Victorian terrace with the fireplace removed, and the opening bricked over. The Realflame hotbox was taken as a starting point for a purely decorative fireplace. Its small proportions fit within the existing brick opening, which allows easy gas connection through the chimney from above or below.
3 RD PRIZE $3000 MIA LAKE - Vic Lake Architect Fusion works The aim was to fuse the eclectic aesthetics from both 1920’s glamour and country design styles. Seemingly unrelated nishes and styles are brought together through a layering of textures to create the perfect union for a statement piece. The black, cold rolled steel gives the showpiece a rustic soul, whilst the unexpected touch of a sliding brass screen with perforated mesh exudes a contemporary air while paying homage to older style re screens.

4 TH PRIZE $2500 CHOON YONG HENG - Architecture Student Simplicty Elegant
5 TH PRIZE $1500 HUI EN WONG - Architecture Student Dancing Fire The concept of ‘Dancing Fire’ was inspired to experience the replace not only as a method to keep warm and also to view the replace as a decora ve element in the space. In order to keep warm during the cold winter days, people would prefer to stay closer to replaces. Hence, a sea ng area is incorporated into the replace design. Also, the concept of a foldable table is to also allow micro-apartment living, a lifestyle that is slowly ge ng known and being prac ce, to have the a orability to have a replace. A replace is commonly found in places that experiences winter.
6 TH PRIZE $1000 KIERAN MURNANE - Architecture Student Mood Light The brief was for small (about 40sqm) weekend accommodation on the scenic south coast of WA. The pure vision gas replace (chosen for its simplicity and ease of use) is located in the main living and sleeping area. The accommodation was designed to have almost no arti cial lighting (the only lights are in the bathroom, kitchenette and dim reading lamps). So at night, the only sources of light are the moon, stars and the re- place. Allowing views of the monnlit landscape and setting a romantic atmosphere.

The TimberHub Initiative
For many years the Timber Merchants Association (TMA) ran the Timber Advice and Display Centre (TADC) as an integral part of its offering to the broader community. With the changes to the market place it was found that the community of architects, designers, builders and consumers were better served by the creation of an independent and focused advisory service … and so the TimberHub was born. What the TimberHub does is provide a world class advisory service that has always been provided to both businesses and consumers and is much more focused on delivering benefits to both groups. As a service we recognise the importance of being able to talk to a person and getting independent and informative advice. The records kept by the TMA demonstrate the importance of this advice and the value it is to the community. Yes you can look at something online, but when it comes to the home and renovations, being able to talk to someone is critical. It’s the biggest investment people make, and whether they do the work through an architect, builder or construction company, information is key. With a showroom that demonstrates state of the art products, and seasoned advisors that collectively have hundreds of years of knowledge between them, it’s an opportunity to get information on a wide range of topics. Whether it be code changes provided by the NCC or just knowing the difference between engineered and solid timber flooring, the team at the TimberHub have got it covered.
The building form is characterized by a contrast between solid masonry forms and lightweight projections, most notably with dramatic cedar-clad ‘U’ structures that extend all the way from the front balconies through the interior to the rear entertainment court, framing views and defining spaces. The large cantilevered balconies are supported by distinctive steel columns that are staggered and shaped asymmetrically to respond to the ragged lines of the surrounding tree trunks.

BALL BEARING DOOR TRACKS Engineered & Manufactured in Australia since 1880
Charles Marshall P/L is a family run business based in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Our flagship product is an extensive range of FITZROY Ball Bearing Sliding Track systems.
COMPANY HISTORY
Charles Marshall established his engineering business in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1880. Over one hundred and thirty years on, the company has grown, prospered and is still owned and run by the Marshall family. This unique patented system covers a vast range of applications from light-weight kitchen drawers up to giant one tonne door installations and beyond. Developed in 1932, the unique FITZROY system provides a reliable and simple solution to the challenge of finding a durable sliding door track. A FITZROY system was fitted to the bronze doors in 1932 at the Shrine of Rememberance in Melbourne. Today, that same system shows negligible wear and is still operating with effortless ease. Since 1932 FITZROY has been opening doors on some of the most prestigious architectural projects around Australia.
UNIVERSITY TESTED
The University of Melbourne Engineering Department tested a typical section of FITZROY track. The track was subjected to 258 hours of non-stop opening and closing operation. This means that the test door opened and closed fully 130,000 times, travelling approximately 160 kilometres.
PRECISION MEASUREMENT RESULTS WERE IMPRESSIVE. Cage Wear - No evidence of wear on either surface Ball Wear - Precision measuring found no evidence of ball wear. Track Wear - 0.0005", So minute as to be regarded as negligible.
CONCLUSION
From these exhaustive tests, the wear rate calculated was so low it was not possible to estimate the life of the track.
Although FITZROY boasts installation in such projects as the Melbourne Casino, Parliament House in Canberra and the Sydney Opera House - there are thousands of smaller, but equally spectacular buildings around Australia that have chosen FITZROY. Used universally in the construction industry you will find FITZROY in such places as: • • • • • • • • • •
Hospitals, schools, prisons Police stations, sports stadiums Off-shore drilling rigs Power stations, fire stations Swimming pool enclosures Residential housing Commercial premises, hotels Factories, banks Locomotives and rail carriages Horse stables

New Silent Motorised Curtain Track
TOSO Australia
TOSO is well known in the Australian market for its premium Mytec Roller blind system, which is ideal for commercial, residential and aged care applications and is considered the best roller blind in the market.
This was previously known as the C-Tick, which all motorised systems require if they are to be sold in the Australian/NZ market, though many Chinese systems seem to ignore this regulation.
But what is less known is that TOSO in Japan was first established in 1949 as a manufacturer of curtain tracks and since that time has maintained its position as “number one” in the Japanese market and never fails to provide constantly evolving designs, new functions, and a wide selection.
The super silent TOSO Ti-8040 with its highly durable belt drive transmission system has a built-in FM remote control receiver along
when opening or closing the curtain. This motorised track will also be the quietest available in the market, with the noise level being under 40 dB, as against most motorised curtain tracks which are between 44 and 50dB, and be able to do widths of 10 metres with 40kg carrying capacity. The Decibels (dB) are worked on a logarithmic scale
There has been a noticeable trend back towards curtains, where before roller blinds and shutters lead the way. There are now more textile options for curtains and this is giving both the consumer and Interior Designers the opportunity to use their creative flair to use this as their preferred window furnishing solution. There also has been a noticeable trend towards the motorisation of curtain tracks, not just for high end homes and hotels but also in every day family homes, and rather than just one motorised track being requested they are now being installed in multiples as they become more affordable, and the public become more aware that it can also extend the lifespan of the curtain as you can avoid damage caused by cords and manual operation. As a result of this, and knowing that the new TOSO system can fill a gap in the market, due to its ultraquiet operation along with smooth operation even when drawn by hand, it has been decided to launch the new TOSO Ti-8040 motorised curtain track into the Australian market and has recently been issued its Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) for both motor and remote. INSITE - Spring 2016
It has a Touch Motion function which enables the opening/closing of the curtains without using any switch operations. If the curtain is drawn, it will begin to move in the direction pulled, and will stop at the place on the limit setup
with a Touch Motion function which enables the opening/closing of the curtains without using any switch operations. If the curtain is drawn, it will begin to move in the direction pulled, and will stop at the place on the limit setup. Along with its motor operation, it also has hand-draw operation because of its built-in electromagnetic clutch, so it can still be operated by hand when no power is available or when a user is unaware that it is a motorised track with no damage to the motor limits or curtain heading, which is a big benefit in a Hotel situation. Operating the curtain by hand is that light that you would think that it was just a normal manual curtain track
and a 3 dB difference is a doubling of the amount of sound energy. In layman’s terms it is about ‘one notch’ on a volume control, and 6-10 dB is generally said to be a subjective doubling of volume, so this is a considerable improvement on other systems currently in the market. WANT an edge that looks great BUT outlasts MOST OTHER alternatives...? The unique FormBoss steel edging had outperformed expectations over the past ten years. It’s installed in high profile places like, Melbourne Olympic park, the Royal Botanic gardens in Sydney for example, and many hundred kilometres have been installed around the country over the years. Most of that is in the trusted galvanised steel finish, or the rustic looking Corten, but now there is an even more durable and better looking version of FormBoss. The new ZAM™ steel option is expected to last up to 4 times longer than galvanised steel thanks to its unique Zinc, Aluminium and Magnesium coating, hence the name ZAM™. It also looks very attractive with its more uniform silvery look as opposed to the dull looking and spangled look of galvanised steel. The FormBoss range is vast with edges from 75mm all the way up to retaining edges with a 580mm tall profile, and it also includes various staking solutions to suit any job. And it’s made here in Australia, so you can be confident of the quality and fast delivery times. FormBoss is easy to cut and shape on site thanks to the unique and patented profile, that make it easy to create almost any shape you want on site saving you time and money. We also offer custom shaping if that’s required for your project.
